The list of complaints i have with the star wars sequel series is long and depressing, but maybe the worst part is the fact that the First Order's existence is a slap in the face, both to the efforts of our beloved heroes in the original series, and to the audience.

Like, oh you loved the original series? You cheered when they blew up the death star? You celebrated when they threw the emperor over the edge to his demise? Well. Too bad. Now we have the first order with another wrinkly old man in charge and also Somehow Palpatine Returned and will bore you later with a completely unexplained show of Marvel villain-level power.

I think we can agree that the ending of Return of the Jedi was... Mm... Poetic and ideal, but not exactly grounded in reality. Surely a lot more work would be required to grapple with a whole galaxy suddenly freed from the oppressive oversight of their fascist regime. But the original trilogy was a space opera, entertainment with themes more than grounded depictions of the fight against authoritarianism. And that's ok! That's why we love it! Good triumphs over evil and we party with the ewoks afterwards, it's great.

What I'm saying is, i think there was a precedent for things not being ✨ perfect✨ after the conclusion of RotJ. But assuming that an entire First Order rose up during that time, with no mention of a struggle or anything (as far as i remember)...? Not only unrealistic, but more importantly in the star wars universe, unpoetic and bad storytelling.

There were a hundred other ways the politics could have been handled to give us a similar effect with the edgy gothboy wielding undo influence in the oppression of others (although i will say i think Ben's character is HORRIBLE and they should have gone a COMPLETELY different direction with him). It's just unfair to the audience to completely undo everything that was important to us from the previous series because you can't be bothered to engage with politics in star wars beyond the oversimplified, overdone Big Bad Empire.

There are political themes in the sequel series that, to their credit, i think they tried to be serious about, particularly gender themes (even though the execution makes me want to barf). So i thought, maybe Disney won't let them do anything serious with this. Star wars has always been very political obviously, and Disney isn't known for allowing much politics. And like maybe that is the actual problem, but Rogue One and Andor have both come out under Disney's watch (Rogue One before the sequel series even!), so like what's going on there?

It's just a mess. I pretend i do not see it. That's all

I find it really wonderful and comforting that Mob Psycho 100 is so inherently optimistic, even though its main message, “you are not special” sounds so mean at face-value. Being special means that something matters more than something else of the same category. Being special at baking? Great! Being special at math? Super! Being special at bodybuilding? Neat! Having so many people have such unique special abilities is what makes the world work. But having a special ability doesn’t mean that someone who doesn't match your special ability matters less than you. You can't be special for simply existing, because that would mean someone else isn't. You aren't special because you inherently matter.
