I have one question with Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens. Do they not know you can just play duel monsters how ever you want on a desk without the holograms and duel disks? get five penalties who cares! No one can stop you from duelling on your bedroom floor, what are they going to do? send in a squat team and be like ‘kids! How dare you play a game meant for children!!!’ 

They just stress about the penalties so much -w-

Say Something regarding fatphobia in media and the terms ppl use in describing characters who gain weight over time ("letting go" like bro shut the fuck up???) and how like, there's also nuance to the discussion (like, a character who starts out on the heavier side choosing to lose weight shouldn't be demonized either - as PLENTY of people want to lose weight for various reasons, and while you can point to a decent amount of it stemming from our fatphobic society, a lot of it is also just personal desire at the end of the day - but I also understand that if your ONLY fat character loses weight at the end and the other characters don't change either, then that's not good) but idk, I'm a little too tired to properly articulate what's going on in my mind? But I just... wish this was more of a discussion

The Sacred Cards

Notes: Been playing Yugioh: The Sacred Cards recently and I got to the end and it made me want to write about it

You, a renown duelist, stood on the Kaiba blimp that soared over Domino city. It was the night before the final match. So much has gone wrong since you and seven other duelists stepped foot on this blimp. Your friends and yourself blindly trusted a man who turned out to be Marik, leader of the Ghouls, a group that had been hurting people since Battle City started.

But something happened to Marik. Something awful. He wasn't himself, not that you really knew him in the first place, but he seemed...more evil somehow. The semi-finals went smoothly at first, but it all came crashing down after a while.

First, there was a match between yourself and Yugi Muto. You, as his long time friend, knew of his other self when he dueled. Somehow, you were able to beat him, even if by a hair. Seto was not happy about that development, and had vowed to beat you in the finals.

However, that didn't happen. The next match was Marik and Kaiba, to which Seto had, unfortunately, lost. Seto then went into a coma and is being kept in one of the medical rooms with Joey and Mai. As far as you knew, this was his second coma. Couldn't be good for the body.

While you were thinking, you didn't notice your door room opening and someone stepping inside. "Y/n?"

You jumped and turned around. There stood was Yugi. He looked shy, as if he were approaching you for the first time. "I...came to see how you were doing. Are you ready for tomorrow?"

"I've gone over my strategies, but Marik could throw anything at me..." You look off to the side.

"So you're nervous?" Yugi wrung his hands. "I am too...I couldn't sleep..."

"Oh, Yugi..." You looked back down at him. "I'll be okay-"

"But what if you aren't? What if you end up like Joey? Or Kaiba?" Yugi looked worried now, and you swore you saw tears in his eyes.

You opened your mouth to say something, but you just walked forward and brought a hand to his cheek. A tear fell from his eye and you wiped it away with your thumb, though it smeared his eyeliner slightly. "Yugi, I'll be okay. I have full confidence in my deck, and I'm sure they'll all wake up after I beat Marik tomorrow. Then this will all be over."

Yugi sniffled and looked up at you. He put his hand over yours and took a deep breath. "I just don't want you to end up like them."

"I understand. I promise you I wont." You gave him a friendly wink. "Now try to get some sleep. I'll see you bright and early for the duel tomorrow, okay?"

Yugi nodded. "Okay. And what if you can't beat Marik?"

"Then I leave him in your capable hands."

Yugi nodded, then turned to leave. With one last look to you, he finally shut your door and walked down the hall. You weren't going to lie to yourself, you were very nervous. But that wasn't going to stop you from trying your hardest to beat Marik and win the Battle City tournament, and wake your friends up. That you were sure of.

my dark secret is ive never fully read the DM manga start to finish and idk if i'll ever get to it (being not as duel monsters brained these days and also i have trouble reading manga on a screen/prefer the physical books, hence my budding collection, and getting a full DM set is an endeavor i do not have time or money for rn), but of course gotta respect a classic, and the first seven volumes are still really close to my heart, i have a lot of warm memories of checking them out from the library when i was a kid 🥺

now the spinoff mangas, THATS my jam. i love these weird little psuedo AUs where everyones got slightly different decks and backstories, they just really capture my fascination. I love the GX manga, it's strange and a little bit of a mess and so deeply up my alley lol... i think about manga!Aster constantly. Hopin to one day get a full complete set of the GX series...only got a few left to find!

i was also recently very generously gifted a full set of the 5ds mangas, so ive been sloooowly chewing through that one too and i also like it a lot so far :^) excited to read more of it and see the fucked up dragon mind control or whatever. eventually id love to read all the spinoff mangas!! even and especially the arc v one despite The Ending on That One!!! its plot sounds BONKERS.

speaking of my list of ygo by treatment of its female characters so far. its so insanely long well. sorry.

sevens : really good marvelous awesome. women are treated as equals in my honest onion and everyone rocks. i <3 yugioh sevens. i love you romin i love you rayne (WEIRDO!) i love you princess g i love you atachi mimi i love you asana i love you tiger etcetcetc I LOVE YOU YUGIOH SEVENS

gx: it's not Great with what it does with asuka and rei but it's somehow still less offensive than all of the other ygos below it in this list. asuka gets to be pretty cool and again, even tho there's several episodes about her being courted at least they let her come out on top whenever guys are trying to get to her and they never do weird sexual shit with her in a way that is as obvious as in the other yugiohs. YES THE BAR IS THAT LOW I THINK! SAD! and she gets as much as spotlight as say, chazz, kenzan, sho, or the likes. if you disagree btw you were not watching yugioh gx and should try to pay attention to women again. asuka is a really good fleshed character by gx standards. rei is also pretty fun, i love her, she has her little moments and she's Not limited to her love shtick, she has really fun beef and duel with chazz for example and has a neat role in s3 and all that. ALL THINGS CONSIDERED: ITS PRETTY NICE! they did an ok job! its very hobbyani and shounen but its not offensive w/ the women!

5d's: like.. it started off really good then they just kind of forget about aki. i will never let them live down the "benchwarmer" thing and guess what. THEY WON'T LET ME EITHER BECAUSE THEY MADE MERCH OF HER WITH THAT TITLE LIKE A YEAR AGO OR SO !!!! sherry is pretty cool though and oh i love carly. carly is good i just wish they didn't kinda ... roll back her progress with jack , it's like they had to make him hate her again for the haha funnies and because he couldn't be nice now in the 2nd half. idk. ruka is fine i just think its hilarious she has a kuriboh with huge ass girl eyelashes i will attach it to the bottom of this post. made sure we know this is a #GIRL kuriboh

DM: its like . okay. anzu doesn't do much i am sorry. i love her it's just that they let her have a few duels and that is it. the #og cheerleader. I LIKE HER! i just think they should let her do more. she has really good scenes outside dueling though and is very integral to the friend group and everything though so :) yayyyy anzu. mai is really good but remember when they. okay this is anime specific BUT I AM TALKING ABOUT THE ANIME SO !!! but remember when they kept her in a coma in like marik's special hell world for literally like 50 episodes. like. it was so fucking dire fifty whole episodes. Bad. AND THEN THEY MADE HER GET POSSESSED LITERALLY IN THE NEXT ARC? VILE. rebecca etc are all fine they werent there for super long but i like them. all in all it was OK wish there was more fleshing out. 5d's still did it better and had more memorable women more in the spotlight i fear. but 4 is not a bad ranking here DM is like alright not too offensive

zexal: ok its like... i don't think tori not dueling in itself is a Crime but it's sad they don't let her when she expresses in the anime wanting to duel . why not let her !!!! plus it'd tie really nicely with rio who i think rocks, but i do NOT understand why they had to have rio duel tetsuo who her only tie to was him having a crush on her when she was besties with kotori and it wouldve been a nice way to tie up their friendship and tori's desire to duel..anyway. CATHY AND ANNA ARE NICE its just that i feel like. anna rocks sooo hard but her whole character is wrapped up in her thing with yuma. they should've come up with another plot for her after i think taht would've been nice but it's not that big of a deal it's still pretty cool. train girl forever. also yuma's sister is cool <3 i think this is kind of a tie with DM actually . also they make at least one weird sexualizing skirt length joke with kotori so um. HOP OFF MY 13 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND STOP BEING WEIRD

vrains: AUTHORS NOTE I HAVENT FINISHED VRAINS YET but ive seen a good amount and my vrains oomfies concur with these ratings. blue angel gets into a coma within 10 episodes and is really good at getting her ass beat unfortunately. ghost gal is pretty cool but shes also out there getting her ass beat i think she only wins once like its so fucking dire out here they will NOT let these women win like they just take one L after the other. and theres really no other women there. um. its just kind of an L overall they just don't let the 2 cool women do anything. like gx only really had asuka and rei but at least they let them be cool and fun i DON'T SEE THAT HERE... love them both though. also shoutout to soulburner's npc girlfriend i think shes funny and im glad she exists

arc-v: literally im sorry i havent finished arc-v either but ALL MY ARC-V OOMFIES WHO ADORE THE SHOW CONCUR. IT'S SO BAD. ruri and rin are like barely characters. serena is cool yuzu is cool until she isn't and THEY HAVE HER LOSE TO AN ADULT MAN USING BDSM MONSTERS AND IMPLY BEING SEXUALLY GRATIFIED BY IT? ITS REALLY BAD. THAT EPISODE ALONE WAS SO BAD IT TOOK IT DOWN 50000 SPOTS IN THE LIST AND I HEARD IT ONLY GETS WORSE. LIKE ACTUALLY CRIMINALLY BAD. MADE ME GENUINELY UPSET. also asuka is there and shes kind of a girlboss until they kill her like really badly and in a humiliating manner. like. Okay. they build it up soo much just to let you down so terribly with the girls.

undecided: go rush its still ongoing but i have watched all 115 episodes so far or whatever and it was like based and epic and poggers in season 1 but um the treatment of the girlies has been going downhill. i have a lot of opinions. i dont know what to say about it. it just declined a lot for the most part. yuamu girlboss though they're kind of making some progress again. i need to give it a rewatch when it's done airing to sort my feelings on it.

Since there are multiple shows- which yugioh show is everyone watching? If I wanted to get into it, where do I start?

Honestly, I'm not a great source of advice for this nonnie because I've only ever watched the original Duel Monsters, Season 0, and a bit of GX when I was a kid. I couldn't tell you much about 5Ds or anything about the other shows that came after, and I don't plan on watching them either.

What I can tell you is that there's not a running story throughout the shows that makes it necessary to watch them all or necessarily in order. As far as I know, they're each their own self-contained show with no strong dependency on the others, so in theory you could start anywhere and enjoy yourself.

The chronological order is Duel Monsters -> GX -> 5Ds -> ZeXal -> Arc V -> Vrains -> Sevens -> Go Rush!!! but anything past 5Ds is completely out of my comfort zone in terms of who the protagonists and what the stories are about.

My advice would be to start with Duel Monsters because its the first one, its near and dear to my heart, and it sets the stage for what Duel Monsters the game really is and where it came from. But if you started it and didn't have the best time, there's no shame in trying out one of the other shows. Like I said, to my knowledge they're largely self-contained, so you wouldn't be missing out on story beats or character plots by trying out another, and you might find something you genuinely fall in love with.

Yugioh Best Friends Ranked

So YugiohEverything did this recently and I’ve ranked both the protags and the main girls so I figured, why not? I need something quick and easy to write this morning. Also, since there’s some debate on who counts as the best friend character in each show and I have some notably weird opinions on this, I’ll say right out of the gate which characters I’m including: Joey/Jonouchi, Sho/Syrus, Crow, Shark, Gongenzaka/Gong, Soulburner, and Luke. (Of whom I’m going to use whichever name I’m more to used to using.)

7 Gongenzaka

Honestly, Gongenzaka being the lowest here isn’t a slight against his character at all. There isn’t a bad character from this set to me. Gongenzaka is definitely the weakest but I’ve actually really grown to respect him. I think his style of duelling was really cool, especially the growth of him learning synchro summon despite it being against the traditions he was brought up with. That’s really neat. And the one time he ever did use an action card was against Z-Arc, in an attempt to save his friend, which is a really compelling moment. The only reason he’s the lowest is because I don’t feel like his personality is all that interesting, I definitely like him more for his duelling. He is a very good friend to Yuya though, as I’ve also come to appreciate in my most recent watch of Arc V. So just know, I respect Gongenzaka, I just like these other characters more.

6 Sho Marufuji

Betcha didn’t see this placement coming. I go on and on about how much I love GX and for every other character ranking, GX’s pick would be near the top, if not the top. Sho meanwhile… I do really like him, especially his relationships with Judai and his brother, Ryo and his growth in the series, especially season four but I like the other characters much more.

Still, people dunking on Sho is news to me. People really hate this guy?! Jeez, what did the dub do to him to make him deserve this? (Okay, maybe it is based on the sub but considering how the GX dub is and that it’s one of the more watched dubs, it definitely stands to reason that the dub just screwed him over.)

5 Luke

Luke is a weird one because I feel like he’s probably more like the rival character but out of the main friend group, Yuga undeniably has the closest connection to Luke. So I’ll count him as the best friend. Luke is a lot of people’s favourite character from Sevens and while I do prefer Yuga and Romin, I do enjoy Luke’s dorkiness and even some of his more arrogant moments when they’re done right. It is annoying that he basically never loses but I guess it’s to counteract Yuga, who loses and wins quite evenly. So overall good character.

4 Shark

Yeah, I’m counting Shark as the best friend instead of Bronk. Because Shark is far more prevalent, far more interesting, has more development and purpose in the narrative, and it’s his connection with Yuma that’s given the most focus in the climax of Zexal II. In my mind, Kaito is the rival, he just got screwed by part two. And you know what? I think Shark is a really neat take on the best friend character. He’s definitely Yuma’s friend, and shows that care often, if begrudgingly or in a strange gruff way and that’s really fun and a great counterpoint to Yuma. Also, do I even need to talk about their final duel? Feels out the wazoo.

Honestly though if “main girl” wasn’t a stupid arbitrary category for these shows, I’d argue Kotori is Yuma’s best friend because they actually have a really good platonic dynamic and they make a point of her mere presence boosting Yuma up in the final part of the Barian arc. But for this list, I say and argue Shark.

3 Joey Wheeler

Man, how I’ve grown. Once upon a time, a young man was in quarantine with his younger sibling and, being very bored and needing a distraction, the man agreed to watch a few episodes of this show his sibling liked, of which he’d only ever seen memes of and thought sounded stupid as shit: Yugioh Duel Monsters. On that first watch, the man could not stand Joey, due to his voice, inflated ego, and lack of duelling skills and while the man did grow to respect Joey as a duellist later in the show, he could never bring himself to like his character. Now, two years later, I question what the hell I was thinking because Joey is easily one of the most compelling characters from the original series. Out of everyone on this list, he’s easily the most supportive as a friend. He always has Yugi’s back, up to and including jumping off a cruise ship to save Yugi’s Exodia cards and sacrificing his life for Yugi’s after he breaks free of Marik’s mind control. Heck, he’s willing to die for Mai as well in Battle City and his whole motivation in Duelist Kingdom was to use the prize money to afford his sister’s eye surgery so she wouldn’t go blind. He is such an ideal best friend it’s hard not to respect him, especially my absolute favourite moment of his: surviving the full force of the Winged Dragon of Ra and coming out of it still on his feet. Joey is literally just an average scrappy guy with a deck he threw together and some street smarts and he is duelling on the level of gods. It’s hard not to admire that.

2 Crow

This one and the last one are honestly kind of interchangeable. I like Joey’s role in the narrative better than Crow’s as I will concede that Crow too often took the spotlight away from other characters. This didn’t really annoy me that much outside of WRGP which was just terrible on literally every front and either way. Personality wise however, I do prefer Crow. He is an absolute sweetheart and his backstory was honestly heartwarming, especially that part in the dub where it’s implied he didn’t have a name so one of his first friends named him after one of his cards. I know I’ve brought that up before but it honestly is one of my favourite moments from 5Ds, and Crow is one of my favourite characters in 5Ds. Heck, I even love him in Arc V, despite him being notably more aggressive there. I think it makes sense considering the change to his backstory, which is still really cute, though I will admit his 5Ds backstory is better. I might also be a little biassed because I watched Arc V before 5Ds so Arc V was my first exposure to Crow and I loved him there.

1 Soulburner

Hahahaha, I’m gonna get burned for this one :)

I debated whether I wanted to include Soulburner or Kusanagi on this list because there are good arguments for either of them being the best friend. However, I decided to go with Soulburner since A) I prefer his character and B) 5Ds has been the top pick for one of my lists like this before. So here we go, Soulburner. The adorable sweet dorky bean who sucks at technology in a technology based show and is the one horrifically traumatised character in VRAINS that got proper closure and whose backstory was one of the biggest tearjerker scenes in VRAINS for me and that is saying something considering how much this show made me cry. I really love his dynamic with Yusaku, of being one of the first people Yusaku trusts and of course, Soulburner and Flame are adorable. I love their sassy back and forths and Flame’s death tore me to shreds partially because of just how hard Soulburner took it. Soulburner is just so… outwardly positive and sweet that seeing him break hurts me so deeply, and gets me more invested in his character. I relate to him in a lot of ways, from his little quirks to the way he reacts to those traumatising events he was put through. Also, I didn’t talk about it when I first saw it (because I was still so broken up over Roboppi and was anxious about Ai) but Soulburner vs Revolver is one of the best duels in VRAINS and was a really good resolution to Soulburner’s character arc. So overall, Crow and Joey are probably better best friends but I personally like and relate to Soulburner more so he gets the edge here.

millennium items: yugioh lore for people who aren't into yugioh

i know some of my readers follow my yugioh fics despite not really being into the fandom, so here's a cheat sheet on the millennium items.

General notes:

There's seven of them.

If you collect them all, you can open the "door to darkness" and destroy the world. Yugi also has to collect them all to get Yami Yugi (Atem) to the afterlife.

They were made by order of Atem's father in Ancient Egypt by murdering Bakura's entire village and melting their bodies into the gold.* LET BAKURA END THE WORLD

Each item has a unique power, but they can all: initiate shadow games; subsequently dole out magical "penalty games" to the losers; do some amount of splitting and sealing and stealing souls, although this ability is poorly defined and only bad guys do it. There's also a scene in the anime where Bakura and Pegasus shoot beams at each other, and this is never explained or brought up again.

The items:

Puzzle - Is supposed to grant a wish when solved. It takes him eight years of work, but Yugi claims his main character status by being the only one in 3000 years to solve it. Yugi's wish is for friends because he is the sweetest boy in the world. He gets the soul of an undead teenaged Pharaoh (Yami Yugi/Atem) with memory problems instead (it's fine they're besties). The puzzle's special ability is a bit of a debate within fandom-- some people think Atem IS the unique ability, but others argue that Atem uses the puzzle's magic to bias games in his favor. Atem has also a few times used an ability called "mind crush" which is very poorly defined and might be putting an opponent into some sort of magical coma? It might just be a lazy penalty game. Who knows!

Ring - The Ring's ability is to find things. Its second ability is that it houses the vengeful spirit of the King of Thieves (Bakura). Bakura mainly uses the Ring to find other Millennium Items, but his host has used it to find his way out of an underground maze. Some fans might argue the Ring was simply guiding him to another Item in the area, but I prefer to interpret this as the Ring being able to find anything.

Eye - Held by first season villain Pegasus J. Crawford/Maximillian Pegasus, AKA inventor and distributor of the Duel Monsters card game. The eye has to physically replace an eyeball in your head to be used. This giant caveat is important because its special ability is mind-reading, which is sort of plot-breaking if anyone after season one tried to use it.

Rod - Easily the item with the funniest name, the Rod gives the user the power of mind-control. Malik uses it to be the season 2 villain, and is shown to not only be able to control minds from a huge distance away, but to also be able to control multiple minds at once, and also re-activate his control over people from far away. If that isn't OP enough, the Rod can be unsheathed (lol) to become a knife. Malik also has a darker alter ego, but it is NOT a spirit within the Rod -- he split his own soul in two as the result of traumatic event in his childhood.

Necklace/Tauk - Worn by Ishizu Ishtar, this item allows the wearer to see the future. The exact distance into the future that Ishizu can see is never made clear, but she's able to see future events-- including events she is not there to witness herself-- in great detail. Ishizu considers the future predetermined and immutable for all her tenure as the Necklace's wielder, right up until Seto Kaiba manages to change his future after declaring he's going to face god and walk backwards into hell defeat god. It is unclear if Kaiba could do this due to his own stubborn personality, or because he has his own innate magic as the reincarnation of a powerful ancient Egyptian priest.

Key/Ankh - This item allows the wearer to enter the "soul rooms" of other people. Soul rooms are sort of like ~mind palaces~, a place inside your soul that appears as a room decorated to suit your personality. Redecorating the room can change your personality. This item is worn by Shadi, who is a mysterious person that mostly just shows up to reveal exposition and cause problems. Shadi is associated with the Tomb Keepers (that's Malik and Ishizu's family), although his exact connection to/role among them is not super clear. Shadi is also shown to have a bunch of random powers in the anime (such as appearing out of a bad warp filter on the ground), which the wiki page attributes to the Key.

Scales - Also wielded by Shadi, the scales allow the user to weigh a person's heart against a feather for ~purity.~ Evil hearts get fed to a crocodile.

*EDIT: to clarify, Atem's father commanded the items be made but did not do the murdering himself, or even know about the murdering. his brother was like "do you know what is definitely a good idea?" and then just didn't mention the magic items are infused with human bodies

i was hoping youd say sevens yay. arc v is far from a favorite of mine as an overall show, but the ride itself i wont deny was great, for the reasons you mentioned. personally i think the zarc duel with multiple tag duels of different characters was one of the best yugioh has cooked up so far. also, it gave us sawatari, can't be mad about that

The Zarc tag duel arc tested my patience the most, actually. It took however many months with no end in sight, and every damn time someone ended up with an INTRUSION PENALTY 2000 PT instead waiting for the last team's duel to end. Maybe I wouldn't have minded as much if it didn't take so many episodes. And if Yuuya's dragon form was easier to look at... it really needed another couple drafts... everyone else had a great character design but dragon Yuuya alone just didn't work.

The Friendship Cup dragged on too long as well, sure, but at least it featured a lot more matchups.

ok so it's clear by now that yugioh go rush takes place before yugioh sevens. how long before is unknown. and i won't try to figure it out right now (maybe sometime later, and it will involve a lot of wild guessing if i do).

but what i'm wondering about now is, how is the timeline affected?

Yuga gets shot back into the past at the end of SEVENS. he arrives before GO RUSH!! starts and crashes his spaceship, but Zwijo saves him. Somehow, Zwijo knows what Rush Duels are, and that Earth has them. Yuga lets it slip that he knows about Rush Duels, so Zwijo kidnaps him to force him to create it in the past!

this changes the timeline, right? Yuga himself says "The truth is, there never should have been Rush Duels in this day and age". so this means there's a few possibilities.

1) Everything that happens after the anachronistic invention of Rush Duels overwrites the SEVENS timeline, which is now considered invalid

I don't think this is likely because that would mean an entire series takes place in an doomed timeline so to speak, and that's just...really mean. why would they do that? yugioh has made some writing decisions that are a bit, well, questionable, in the past but i think this would be going too far.

2) This was always meant to happen, and somehow resolves itself without changing the timeline

This is plausible but limiting. It means they can't do anything hat would make SEVENS impossible. although, if it's really far in the past then i guess there isn't much that couldn't be fixed. Although, it does leave a bit of a plot hole...if Rush Duels are such a sensation, then why would they die out and cease to exist before the start of SEVENS?

3) This has created a separate branch of the timeline. No changes are made to SEVENS, and the events of SEVENS don't repeat in the new timeline (or maybe they do, but it doesn't matter).

I think this is the best one because it leaves SEVENS untouched and GO RUSH!! to do whatever. yea thats it

Providence, Curiosity, and You

(Or, why the localization of Neil Saionji's catchphrase to 'curiosity' is dumb and is gonna cause a bunch of problems) So this is something I've been thinking about for a while now, and while I have ranted about it on whatever discord servers I could reach (and also to a good friend of mine who I dragged into yugioh sevens so I would not brainrot alone) I am writing this post because I genuinely feel that like, this dub choice baffles me on so many levels. But let's start from the basics. So. Neil Saionji. Picture below. This eleven year old blonde kid who is a major character in YuGiOh SEVENS, holds a high executive job in the local super-corporation that regulates the entire town and is a genius hacker who could apparently just causally reroute satellites at 3 years old. For the longest time the person closest to him was a sentient massage chair robot, named Sebastian. He also had apparently gone his whole life prior to meeting the main cast without tasting good ramen. This last bit of information has no relation to anything but is funny so I wanted to mention it.

So, in the series, one of the words you'll hear him say the most and that is really most important to his arc and character is 'providence' ('setsuri' in japanese, if you want to organize your drinking game or something. Not recommended for people who need their liver, though!). Providence is usually a term used in a religious context, but I think for the sake of a more general discussion it can be safely defined here as 'an external, omnipotent force that guides people and events towards a pre-determined path'- something that is so intrinsically woven in the fabric of the universe that it is impossible to escape from. This is something Neil is shown multiple times to deeply believe in. He believes things should be according to providence, though he is not always sure what this providence is, or where it's leading him, it seems to initially just essentially amount to keeping the order and nature of things as they are. The reason he opposes Rush Duels, initially, is because they oppose the current status quo- oppose providence- and so he feels that as an agent of both Goha and of this superior force, he has to stop them. But even as he does so, he discovers something even their creator, Yuuga, hadn't seen. The possibility of Maximum Monsters, the area left intentionally unfinished. And as he has seen it, he feels it is 'right' that he use it for the sake of providence. So far, though, you could reframe this in the context of 'curiosity' rather easily and this is what the localization team has done. While this has led to some interesting dialogue being left out, and some other stuff being replaced by generic taunt/countertaunt exchanges, this is par for the course for dubs, so why am I so bothered by it? Well, not only do I feel changing a character's entire motivation with something that does not have nearly the same impact- in fact, curiosity by itself is much more open-minded and in a way goes in contrast to providence!- it will also make some later plot beats to come lose a lot of their meaning, at least I feel.

What I am referring to is specifically the Goha Siblings arc, and more specifically episode 65, 'Solitary Providence'. To give a brief recap, it sees Neil duel Asana under Yuo's orders, and him resigning from his position at Goha after his loss. Now, in the original version this is a very good and insightful episode. Neil has until now- even though he has changed after losing to Yuga- still been a pretty external character. He had a more active role to play in the Team Battle Royale arc, but even then that arc was more focused on Gakuto and Romin reaching a turning point in their character arcs, and on the bigger mystery around Otes and his plans. Otherwise, he's been the overseer, a more benign one after his arc, lending aid to Yuga when prompted but never actively seeking to do so. As mentioned, this lines up with what I believe to be his idea of providence- that things that are to happen will happen, and there is no need or reason to fight it. The universe follows a pre-determined fate, and the only way to free oneself from the chains this realization brings is to accept it and go with the flow.

And this is where it gets him. To follow his providence, he now has to duel against his friends and to do so under the orders, and for the benefit of, someone who directly stands opposed to them. He will still do it of course, and he does. Bound not only by his position as a Goha worker, but also by his providence as such. But he loses. He loses and not only that, he loses to the one thing that was able to overcome providence the other times he lost: bonds. Bonds with people, something he has so far mostly been 'outside' of due to his providence. And what's worse, by the end of it, after he resigned from his position as he muses how he's always been alone, he loses Sebastian as well. The person that had been closest to him, or at least for the longest time.

It's no wonder this episode has the title it has, and it's really what prompts Neil to reflect on his idea of providence, and to realize what he's given up because of his belief. ...Of course, this is all done under the layer of a kids's show about card games, with comedy and lightheartedness to spare: I might go into this more in a separate post, but I do think sevens is very interesting like that, where the fact it undoubtedly is more child-friendly and humorous doesn't stop it from having pretty deep subtext and themes.

The point of all this is, though, do you now understand why 'curiosity' is not a good enough replacement for this providence? Why I think that either they have to change the context of this episode- and Neil's arc- completely, or they will end up with a very weak character in the dub where the original had a much, much more nuanced and fascinating outlook into the conflict of determinism versus free will? (With Neil being able to both innovate and thrive from his providence, but also losing things dear to him and being alone because he just accepted it rather than fighting).

I sincerely doubt curiosity can replicate this duality in any satisfactory way, but since the dub has not yet gotten to season 2, I suppose we will wait and see- but I am not hopeful. I have been burned by the yugioh dub too many times, the latest example that comes to mind being how they handled Playmaker and Ai's relationship in VRAINS. I just wanted to get my thoughts on it out of my brain and written down somewhere, because why not?

Hello, my friend!! Thank you so much for the asks <3 This'll probably be a long one, so it's going to be under the cut~

1.) What led you to start writing fan fiction?

I'm not entirely sure. I've been basically writing for my whole life (ever since I was a wee lad) and my roots started in... Sonic fanfiction... Not my proudest moment, but we all have to start somewhere. I was my own worst nightmare when I was merely seven >:)

(I still have the god awful notebook with one of the first fics in it... No, I can't decipher it-)

3.) What experiences/influences have shaped your writing the most?

The last fandom I was in truly brought out my absolute need to be writing constantly and my love for AUs. Upon joining the Yugioh fandom, though, I started to learn how to shape my fanfics and build them up with more emotions (also, I learned how to write smut! which is such a huge accomplishment because I used to never get that far). It's always baffling to look back on my first posted Yugioh fic and my most recent one.

I suppose one experience that I can recall that has truly influenced me and my writing is when I was forced to join a literature contest once and I won first place. It wasn't anything spectacular, but that was the first time that I had officially won something. I forget about it a lot, but I know that gave me an ego/confidence boost of sorts at the time to pursue writing more seriously.

11.) What attracted you to the fandom(s)/media you write in?

Oh, yes, the story about how I accidentally fell into the world of Yugioh. Around the beginning of quarantine, I was still writing for my old fandom. There was an artist on Instagram that did fanart for that fandom, but also did art/talked a lot about Yugioh 5D's. One night, I got bored and I put it on my TV while I was falling asleep. I woke up the next morning, started paying attention, and... Well, here we are.

I replaced 5D's with DM and I actually didn't start properly watching that one until the middle of season 3. I know, I'm insane, but it's difficult for me to get into something from the very beginning. I spent most of quarantine writing fanfiction while binging all of the Yugioh shows (I stopped at VRAINS, but I've watched enough of that to have a vague idea of what happens). And yeah! That's how I got here :)

As for The Exchanger...

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! That ending was definitely something, wasn't it? >:) I do have a follow up floating around in my head, but I'm currently drowning in projects, so... Hopefully I'll be able to get there at some point amongst all of them (and maybe when I get an actual idea of where I'm going with things).

SMILES. i would love to. i cant speak for revolver or the bridge rivals yet and i havent seen enough arc-v to have a solid grasp on declan's symbolism yet but i will talk a little about the spinoff rivals i do know pretty well

as a sidenote, like. ok so Kaiba's main motifs and 'symbolism' is...well. centered around Blue-Eyes and dragons in general mostly, of course. And he kind of has those weird disease/virus and mild clown motifs that show up a little in his cards, and those are all plenty cool and they work for what seto kaiba needs to be! but imo that doesn't really get nearly as expanded upon either in the show itself or otherwise in official yugioh What Have You, compared to the guys who came later. i didnt have a good spot to say this otherwise so it's going here lol of course thats just my opinion on the matter

Chazz: anyway, so something I notice is explored a bit more with the spinoff rivals is that they'll have these motifs that actually get extended into their archetypes in the actual tcg, and it's so SO cool to see. Chazz/Manjoume has his whole iconic thunder motif of course, and he also gets that little s2 stint with the Society of Light giving him a brief Bright Distressing White motif and BOTH OF THOSE. HAVE BEEN INVOKED WITH ARMED DRAGON LV 10 CARDS

i really especially love Armed Dragon Thunder Lv. 10-- its whole effect is the Manjoume Thunder chant!!! IT'S DOING THE POSE. IT'S SO FUN.

and of course also Chazz is a character very tied to the symbolism of "weak" duel monsters, of "weak" decks, one-star monsters and the Ojamas especially, and that in general is such a fun spin on a yugioh rival. we do a complete 180 from Guy Tied Almost Exclusively to Very Powerful Dragon to Guy So Symbolically Correlated With Weak Monsters He Dresses Up as One in His Last (and one of his best) Duels. peace and love on planet finding strength in the unremarkable

Jack: ok so Jack is an interesting one. He's very symbolically tied to being the 'King' and to underworldly draconic hellfire imagery [which in of itself is really cool, and I think there's some very interesting dichotomy in there with how Jack's tied with a fiery hellish dragon motif but Yusei's tied to a cosmic heavenly dragon motif...i really love Jack and Yusei as narrative counterparts.] But the thing is, in the same vein Jack's tied deeply to Burning Soul-- the issue is 5D's also very clearly puts forward that the Burning Soul iconography is also tied (and in large part originated) with the Legendary Signer...who is. an indigenous brown South American guy.

And they. gave it to one of the arguably whitest Yugioh characters. Erm. 🥴 classic yugioh racially questionable moments !This is what I mean when I say the spinoff rivals have far more interesting symbolism to me--sometimes the interest is out of uhhhh not great narrative handling!! Gives even more to chew on.

Shark: yeah Shark is the one that makes me insane. There's no way to talk about him and his symbolism without getting into deep Zexal Spoilers, so. Be mindful of that. I'm gonna talk about him and Kite under the cut

ok so Shark is like the goddamn yugioh rival symbolism rivalry gold rush. You trip into the Reginald Ryoga "Shark" Kamishiro Kastle motifs and symbolism well and youre falling for ten thousand years. You cant talk about him without having to get into him also being Nasch, and then you have to talk about the Barian Emperors, and that second you get into that is the second you get sandblasted with some of the most insane symbolism yugioh writers have every cooked up.

There is so much goddamn demonology imagery and motif and symbolism jammed into the Barians I will be here all day getting into it. NOT EVEN GETTING INTO THE BUDDHISM INFLUENCE TOO. You cannot convince me that the Barian Emperors aren't supposed to correlate with the Seven Princes of Hell, alongside their deeply implied Seven Deadly Sin symbolism (and the Ursa Major symbolism too of course--it's what they get their names from!) To me I think Nasch is supposed to be tied to Leviathan especially, being an aquatic-based monster, but he could also correlate to Lucifer, playing on the pop cultural idea of Lucifer being the leader of Hell (and in demonology, typically associated with pride...pretty big trait of Shark's!)

That's just me barely scratching the surface with him. He's got the demonology symbolism, and Ursa Major motif, and seven deadly sins symbolism, and the sea predator symbolism and motif, and the royalty symbolism (good god his DUB SURNAME IS FUCKING KASTLE. THE PALER PART OF HIS HAIR LOOKS LIKE A CROWN.) And also all the insane numerology symbolism Zexal is leaking out the ears with. he's the fucking best. Why did they make this 14 year old so jampacked with this shit. it RULES.

Kite: it's so neat that Zexal has two rivals effectively. ANYWAY. Kite doesn't have as much 'oh my god it keeps going. it keeps going. oh holy shit' tier symbolism as whatever going on with Shark but he's got some stuff going on; I think it's especially cool that he and Mizar/Mizael have this "light vs. time" motif going on with their dragons, a Galaxy-Eyes arms race based on the speed of light. In general Kite's really associated with light, in the the very scientific sense, be it the way his jacket turns white when he duels, his Photon-filled deck, HELL even literally the way his eyes get damaged and his vision suffers is arguably tied to it, and it rocks. I feel like Kite is (esp since Zexal is supposed to parallel DM in a lot of ways) really the rival meant to parallel Kaiba the most, even down to having a dragon ace monster based around something bright (white dragon, photon dragon,) but I think they really took the time to expand on that inherent symbolism and show it off in even more ways narratively than we see with Kaiba. it's just cool the more i think about it the more i really like what they did with kite.

Fairy Tail Ships

Some Rando came at me on my main for a ship I hadn’t even said a single word about on a post about a character not involved in said ship so now I’m just gonna write down all my Fairy Tail ships unprompted out of pure spite

Okay so as every other of this kind of post will plainly spell out I always have One Guy who is just the Ship bicycle. This character could kiss literally anyone and I would be more than happy. Typically they in fact do.

For Fairy Tail, it’s Gajeel Redfox

You would not believe your eyes if my first fucking Gajeel ship was Gajeel/Gajeel. I love Edolas Gajeel and up until that point Earthland Gajeel interacts with pretty much no one positively. I fully believe he hard made out with himself. First kiss. First time? The full shebang. Canon as far as I think.

Following that IMMEDIATELY is Gajeel/Lily. My god. My God let’s just give Gajeel a beefy cat man to homoerotically throw around. “That’s My Cat” I love him he’s so fucking stupid he makes out with Lily on the regular.

Gajeel/Levy is probably the best developed canon ship in Fairy Tail and that’s really not saying much but I think they’re cute. The only caviot is Levi pegs him. I’m sorry, Gajeel cannot be a top.

I think Gajeel/Natsu is funny as hell they’re so violent. Gajeel thinks Natsu’s the dumbest man he’s ever met. They don’t kiss they bite.

Gajeel/Laxus is just as funny but just because they both think they’re the smart one in the relationship.

After that all I might loose a bit of steam but Romance in this show is rarely interesting but here’s some of my takes anyway;

Laxus/Freed is always a free sail Freed pining from the beginning Laxus having no idea what his own feelings are until some time mid season 7. Laxus taking everything casually and Freed over thinking every little piece of affection he gets. They’re an uncommunicative mess and I love them.

I like Juvia/Grey not because I think it’s a well balanced and fleshed out canon romance, but because I love Juvia and want her to be happy and think Annoyingly Horny Stalker and Too Tired For This Shit is the funniest trope. Also Transfem Lesbian Grey, Demiromantic Bi/Pan Juvia

Speaking of Stalker/Obsession ships, Lucy/Flare??? My god I had not-antagonist Flare for 3 episodes and I will never let her go. Red headed Lesbian raised by a Village of Giant Men. Get yourself a blondie GF you deserve it.

Another Stalker/Obsession because I’m just gonna keep on goin; Erza/Sho???? Hello??? That was one baby me was entranced by. Love when the stalker is also the bottom. I love Sho I think he’s so cute, I think his obsession with Erza is so cute, I think his Sister Complex is so cute.

Gildarts/Cana is so freaken good that YuGiOh Episode with Scorpio during the Eclipse Spirit Arc where he says he wants her to call him Daddy and she says she Would if he’s Been Around More you two I am going to scream don’t talk like that we’re trying to d-d-d-d-dddddDUEL

Also Eclipse Scorpio’s crush on Cana is cute as hell I love him he just wanted to play YuGiOh with a Hot Girl and she deserves a little boyfriend like him I’m all for them

Seven steps back tho the BEST Lucy ship, hands down, is Lucy/Taurus and I am SO INCREDIBLY SAD I’m alone on this! T4T Lucy/Taurus is my EVERYTHING!! Give him a SMOOOOOOOOOCH!!

Five steps back again because none of my thoughts are ever organized Second Best Lucy Ship is Lucy/Loke I just love a lot of Lucy/Celestial Spirit ships but this one This One is so cute I love how extra romantic he gets after going back to being Leo one of few ships I could actually see tying the knot and getting married.

Fuck it I’m just gonna keep talking about Lucy’s celestial spirits; I think Aquarius was Lucy’s first love and also her second mommy I don’t think they ever dated but to Lucy the love she felt for Aquarius was both Familial and Romantic when she was little. Lucy/Michelle more Stalker/Obsession more Sister Complex with a little dash of objectophilia post Catholic Arc. I love how the Fairy Tail anime just dropped Every inanimate object has thought, emotion, will, goals, and feelings but is unable to act upon them or even knows they have such feelings without forbidden magics and just Expected me to be Okay with that. I am not. I never will be. Michelle wants to fight Aquarius for taking Lucy’s first kiss right in front of her.

Wendy/Sherria are exceptionally cute. I don’t have much to say I just think they’re cute and wholesome and should be girlfriends.

But ALSO I think Mest/Doranbolt’s crush on Wendy is very cute I bet he beats himself up over liking a little girl. He’s her first kiss, she initiated it.

Macao and Wakaba are a “Didn’t realize I was Gay and In love with my best friend until AFTER I was married to a woman” pair and I love them. They keep their relationship a secret. Make out in the guild’s storage room. Mira’s caught them once or twice and promises to keep their secret, so long as she never catches them with their pants down that close to the cheese again.

Levi/Lucy are a cute Best Friends to Girlfriends kind of ship. No one would notice if they started dating because they’d act the exact same as before 

But also Cana/Lucy?? Same energy in that no one would really know they’re dating until Cana gets stupid clingy/protective when other people hit on Lucy.

Mavis/Zera is under appreciated I know Zera isn’t real and is just a projection of Mavis’ loneliness and isolation but also she’s Mavis’ gay thoughts a WLW side. Her self love and care in personhood. They kiss.

Canon evil lesbian queens Kyoka/Seilah is a lot more than I expected out of this program and I am so here for it!! Go girls go!!!

Dimaria/Brandish as well, evil lesbians having a bad spat and taking it out on the entirety of Fairy Tail is very funny to me. They are toxic and horrid and I hope Brandish gets away from her.

Kamika/Cosmos, while not evil, are just as canon lesbians and I love that for them. Also Lolicon Cosmos.

There at the start of the War Arc when Toby and Millianna were walking into war together and he’s looking at her with a flush on his face little guy got puppy love and I!!!! Am all about it!!! She’s a lesbian for sure but she’ll make an exception for him. I don’t think he knows what a gender is anyway

I think that fact that Ichiya and Nichiya most certainly Fuck is not discussed enough in this fandom this man fucks his own Fursona I need more people to speak of this.

Okay now my take on the Big Ships and Canon Shit because I actually didn’t talk about them above I focused on what I’d actually like to see.

Natsu/Lucy is. Fine. I saw someone say a headcanon that Natsu thought they were dating the whole time and I love that. ADHD Natsu who decided he liked Lucy and was going to ask her out but Forgot and then Forgot he Forgot and proceeded to think they were an official couple for 9 more season.

Natsu/Lisanna is also pretty okay. I love baby love, I love them as kids playing house playing marriage awkward dancing and kisses on the cheek and holding hands. They were eachother’s first love and that means so much to me there’s very little that could ever make you forget your first love. (Side note I think at this age Elfman had a crush on Natsu but didn’t say anything sense Lisanna also liked him)

Erza/Jellal bothers me. Maybe I just don’t like Jellal as a character enough yet but not only is he Not In The Guild like every other main series ship, he also is on some pretty thin ice on being an Antagonist or not. But, like above, he was Erza’s First Love and that really is kind of a Big Deal, being actually In Love for the first time. I think they could heal, and I’d love to see that actually play out. If anyone has any fics where this is a Real Issue that they talk about and face I would actually love to read them.

Mavis/Zeref is also pretty. Okay. I don’t like it, I think it’s pretty forced, I think the fact that they had a child when Mavis died after their first kiss is a fucked concept everyone’s avoiding despite it being the most interesting part of the ship. He’s her pathetic little meow meow, she’s his last shred of sanity decaying in his arms as he desperately plants kisses over her small prepubescent body. It’s VERY Dead Dove and everyone is avoiding it.

Happy/Carla... is this one people actually ship or just something in the background? Honestly Happy feels so much Younger than Carla most of the time despite them probably being the same age. He just acts like a little fool. I don’t like it. I think Carla deserves better. And is also a Lesbian.
