The DoJ decides to go after Apple because why not
The New York Times (that should be a gift link)
The Justice Department is in the late stages of an investigation into Apple and could file a sweeping antitrust case taking aim at the company’s strategies to protect the dominance of the iPhone as soon as the first half of this year, said three people with knowledge of the matter.
OK, so I wrote a random one off line on BlueSky/Mastodon about this, but I think there’s more to get into.
Let’s start: “The dominance of the iPhone”. Per random data that I could quickly look up online — Apple has roughly 17 percent of the market. That’s behind Samsung.
We clearly have a different understanding of the word “dominant”.
The agency is focused on how Apple has used its control over its hardware and software to make it more difficult for consumers to ditch the company’s devices, as well as for rivals to compete, said the people, who spoke anonymously because the investigation was active.
OK, what do they mean here? Let’s continue on.
Specifically, investigators have examined how the Apple Watch works better with the iPhone than with other brands, as well as how Apple locks competitors out of its iMessage service. They have also scrutinized Apple’s payments system for the iPhone, which blocks other financial firms from offering similar services, these people said.
OK, cool. So let’s next go after Nintendo for not making games for the Xbox and PlayStation. Or Sony for not allowing third party controllers to work better than the first party DualSense. Or McDonald’s, not letting other places sell the Big Mac or the McNugget.
The Apple suit would likely be even more expansive than previous challenges to the company, attacking its powerful business model that draws together the iPhone with devices like the Apple Watch and services like Apple Pay to attract and keep consumers loyal to its products. Rivals have said that they have been denied access to key Apple features, like the Siri virtual assistant, prompting them to argue the practices are anticompetitive.
Just because someone develops something a certain way, and your stuff doesn’t work with it, isn’t anticompetitive. It’s an ecosystem. Google has it. Samsung has it. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have it in gaming.
They have also looked at how the Apple Watch works better alongside the iPhone than other competing smartwatches. Users of Garmin devices have complained in Apple’s support forums about being unable to use their watches to reply to certain text messages from their iPhones or tweak the notifications they receive from the iPhone that they have connected to their watch.
This maybe has a point. But, god, what a fraction of a fraction of an argument.
Apple’s new privacy tool, App Tracking Transparency, which allows iPhone users to explicitly choose whether an app can track them, drew scrutiny because of its curtailing of user data collection by advertisers. Advertising companies have said that the tool is anticompetitive.
Changing how a piece of technology works is not anticompetitive. Especially when Apple does not compete in advertising. If they start running their own ad networks against Google and Meta, and those get around ATT, sure. Anticompetitive. But you can’t be anticompetitive if you aren’t competing. It’s in the goddamned word.
Apple isn’t totally innocent here. I think their stance towards third party applications or app stores on the iPhone and iPad is silly, especially given that you can do the same thing on a Mac right now today. But this is inane.
John Gruber did a much more eloquent version of this post strictly on the whole Beeper thing last month, and I’m sure he’ll have something on Daring Fireball about this soon, but my thoughts can be summed up pretty easily…
We really fucking need younger people who understand technology in key positions of government.
I can’t wait for another big public hearing where Senator Oldasfuck starts asking Tim Cook why it’s so goddamned hard for him to print his photos from his phone, why is everything he writes in all caps, and what the HELL is a PDF anyway?

Alphabetti Spaghetti (1/3)
And we will fall in love with shooting stars. - A
Have you ever seen an Aardvark? I don’t think so.
Were you ever abandoned in a public place as a child? Where? Abandoned is a pretty harsh word lol. My parents did like playing pranks on me and hide whenever I’d get distracted at the grocery or department store. They’d let me get nervous or even tear up for a bit until showing up again.
What accent do you have? I guess just your standard Filipino English accent that’s common among people who were able to take up English studies. I don’t really know how to describe it.
Is there someone in your family addicted to something? What is it? I don’t think so.
Have you ever been under general anaesthetic? What were you having done? I think so? When I had a tooth extraction done on me two years ago I was told I was going to be injected with anaesthesia, but I didn’t feel as if anything changed throughout the procedure. Either my dentist told me fake news lol or he’s just really good at his job for me to not notice anything.
How do you show the ones you love affection? It depends on the person. Around my friends, I know I’ve had taken a liking to them once I start getting especially talkative with them. For people I have even deeper relationships with, I like...buying them gifts, I guess. Getting them things that remind me of them. I would also bend over backwards to do nice deeds for them, like driving them to their destination even if I find it far.
Are you more passive or aggressive? I tend to be very passive aggressive in the way I deal with things.
Do you like the band Aha!? Not in particular.
Do you know anyone called Aidan? What are they like? Nope.
Ever heard of the band Ajax? No but I know that’s a brand of like cleaner or something. That’s close enough to ‘band’ haha.
Do you know anyone called Akash? I don’t either.
Do the sound of fire alarms scare you? They would obviously be scary if it rang for a real reason. Who wouldn’t freak out over a fire?
Do you live in America? If so, which state? If visited, where'd you go? No, and I’ve never visited either. I’d love to take a trip to cities like New York, New Orleans, Portland, and Chicago one of these days.
Have you ever had an ant infestation in your house? Only when there’s food left out accidentally.
Aora - did I spell that correctly? I don’t even know what you’re referring to, so I can’t tell you if you’ve spelled whatever it is right.
Do you have a preference in Apple? What type do you prefer? I don’t quite get this question - like a preference within Apple products? I mean, a phone and a laptop are essentials for me, and generally I do prefer having an iPhone and Macbook over other brands; but I can live without an iPad, an Apple Watch, iMac, Apple Pen, etc...if this is what you mean.
Are you an Aquarian? Is anyone in your family/your partner/best friend? ...You mean Aquarius? No. I don’t believe in astrology nor pay attention to zodiac signs either, so I wouldn’t be able to name Aquariuses that I know right off the bat.
Have you ever worn any type of armor? Which type? I don’t think I’ve ever had to, no.
Do you use the word ass a lot? Kinda, but it’s usually part of a longer word, i.e. asshole, asshat, deadass, etc.
Have you or your family had an attorney? What for? Not to my knowledge.
Is your car/family’s car an automatic gear or manual? Automatic.
Are you interested in aviation, piloting and aircrafts? Just the slightest bit. I would love to learn how to fly a plane, and I would be willing to pay for lessons. It’s just the type of activity that’s super hard to squeeze into an already-hectic schedule of mine.
What was the last award you recieved for? A academic distinction in college.
Axl Rose - like or dislike? Like, but I’m nowhere near a passionate fan. I just don’t have any reasons to actively dislike him.
Do you like air being spelt ayre or ayer in rap or hiphop or is it nasty? I don’t care.
Is the sky outside Azure? If not, what shade is it? No, it’s pitch black.
Belle amour (we've been here before). - B
Do you call anyone baby? Is it sweet or an overrated name for affection? Just my dogs. I find it sweet; it’s my preferred term of endearment if in a relationship.
Bby - does this shortened version bug you? No; my friends and I use this with each other.
Do you know what BC in terms of time stands for? Before Christ, but I prefer using BCE.
BDf - For or against? I don’t know what this is referring to.
Do you prefer beach breaks, city breaks or winter breaks? Why? Beach breaks. Winter break is an immediate cross-out since we don’t even have winter; and I already live and work in an urban area as it is. Beaches are my way to go if I want to escape life for a bit and completely unwind.
Do you spell out boyfriend properly or put bf in texts/online? I can use either depending on what I feel like typing out. It’s not that serious haha.
Do you know what bg is short for? Upon reading this question I immediately thought ‘background,’ but if this question had another meaning in mind I wouldn’t be aware of it.
Do you know anyone with the last name Bhays? No.
Have you ever been bird watching? What did you see? No, doesn’t sound like my kind of hobby.
Do you like Bjork? Not in particular, but just like the Axl Rose question I don’t have anything against her either.
What does this read: bk 2moz miss u lyk fk. Doesn't this text speak annoy? No one types like this anymore at least among people I know, but I imagine it would lowkey bother me a bit.
Do you like BMWs? They’re whatever. I don’t pay attention to cars much.
What is the nearest book to you called? How many times have you read it? There aren’t any books here up on the rooftop.
BnQ - gone there? What did you buy? Idk what that is.
Are you more brainy or brave? I wanna say brainy, if anything? I’m pretty jumpy lol.
Did you like the BSBs (Backstreet Boys) as a kid? How about now? No, I’m a little too young for that generation of artists and groups.
Burgers, Hot Dogs or Salads at a Barbecue? We don’t really practice ~barbecues~ here. But at Filipino parties I would usually flock to lumpia and fried chicken, hehe.
Do you have a Byro? No, because I also don’t know what that is.
Cold eyes and filthy lies all leave me petrified. - C
Do you have a Cactus (Cacti)? No, I don’t like plans.
Do you know what a CCTV is? Yes...?
How many CDs are in the room you are currently in? None where I am right now but I have all of Beyoncé’s albums save for Lemonade in my bedroom. I also have Paramore’s self-titled album and Hayley Williams’ Petals For Armor. My CD collection is about to experience a revival because of BTS, though. My plan to get all versions of all their albums is rock solid, lmao.
What's your favourite cereal brand? Cookie Crisps.
Do you like children's TV shows still? Which one(s)? I’ll revisit an episode or two of shows I watched as a kid at a given time for old times’ sake, but I don’t regularly watch children’s TV shows anymore. I haven’t for a very long time.
Cinnamon - Yum or Yuck? I’m actually kind of in the middle about it. I feel like too many desserts have been banking on cinnamon, so the taste of it can be a little tiring. It’s delicious if I haven’t had it for a while, though.
Do you know anyone with the initials and or name CJ? Quite the opposite; I know PLENTY of JCs, even my sister is one. I know one or two CJs but that’s it.
Have you ever met a self professed clairvoyant? What did they do/say? No.
Do you watch CNN News? What's your prefered news channel/show? I don’t tune into the channel but every once in a while I will encounter a CNN link on social media that I’d actually click on and read through. As for preferred news sources, I don’t have one as there are matters to criticize about 99% of them lol; but I am most likely to trust articles I from AP or Reuters. Just things you pick up as a journalism student.
How many cousins do you have? I have 9 first cousins. I lose count by the time I try to go beyond that since I don’t even know all of my dad’s cousins, which makes it hard to track who my second cousins are.
Do you still draw with crayons? When was the last time you did? Drew what? I don’t remember anymore.
Do you know what a CSS feed is? What is it? I’m familiar with the term but never bothered to learn about what it is.
Do you like cycling/biking? What type of bike do you have? ...I don’t even know how to ride a bike.
Do you really like it, is it is it wicked. - D
What is the most dangerous animal you've petted/held? I can’t decide between snake or crocodile.
Do you like Death Metal? If so, which band(s)? I wouldn’t say I do.
Did you ever keep a diary/journal? I did a million attempts to keep a diary when I was younger, but I was never able to keep up with any of them and I ended up having 4598358395 notebooks with one or two entries each at most. Having a Tumblr page for surveys has so far been my most successful streak at keeping some type of journal.
Do you prefer small, medium, large or no dogs? I prefer all dogs.
Do you know what DP stands for in porn? Yes.
Have you ever dressed up as a celebrity for a party/Halloween? I went as my favorite female wrestler once. I wouldn’t strictly call her a celebrity, but she’s a very well-known personality in the wrestling industry so she’s popular in that right.
DS or Wii? Why? Wii. I was able to make more memories with it.
Does dust make you sneeze or cough? Sneeze, usually.
How many DVDs do you have all together? Idk, I don’t buy DVDs anymore.
Do you dye your hair regularly, sometimes or never? I’ve never done it.
Every love lies sometimes . . . - E
What's something you refuse to eat? Most fruits.
Don't you think the word ebb is so pretty? I’m neutral about it. I don’t use it a lot.
Do you like Chocolate Eclairs? I love eclairs in general haha. Chocolate eclairs in particular sound delicious.
Ever tried edible paper? Yeah, with the White Rabbit candy.
Eevee - pretty name or too Pokemon-y? Definitely very Pokemon-y.
Do you sometimes mix up the spellings/meanings of affection and defection? Erm, no? They have completely different spellings and meanings, so I personally have never switched them up.
Do you have a big ego, low self esteem or somewhere in between? I think I’m somewhere in between. I’m insecure about some things about myself, but I don’t really put myself down 24/7. I feel like that would put such a strain on my mental health, which I certainly would never need.
What Element does your starsign fall under? I think earth? My co-workers were just discussing this last Friday, but I couldn’t really butt in since I can’t bring myself to care about astrology. I know they mentioned Taurus being an earth sign though.
Do you show your emotions easily and freely or hide them? Depends...I can do either depending on the situation.
What is your favourite form of entertainment? Korean reality shows are quickly becoming a favorite of mine at the moment. I also like compilation videos on YouTube.
What will they write on your epitaph? I’ve honestly hadn’t put much thought into this yet, and I don’t plan to anytime soon. It just seems like a super grave thing to think about lol.
Estimate/guess what number we are on now? Maybe 60s or 70s?
Do you know basic social etiquette? I mean etiquette will always differ per country or culture, so what is basic in other countries might not be here, and vice versa. I think it’s hard to measure.
Does your country use the Euro, Great British Pound, Dollar or other? Other.
Do you still get excited on Christmas Eve? Yes. Mostly for the free food and the opportunity to see relatives I really only ever see every December 24.
What animal/creature that is extinct do you wish wasn't? Those that went extinct from human activity.
What colour eyes do your parents have? Black/dark brown.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
NOTE: the key to this procedure is to move the existing version of iPhoto 9 to the Trash bin in the Dock (don't empty yet) before going to the App Store.

2017 Year End Survey Results
2017 Year End Survey!!!
Hi Friends…
Happy Valentine’s Day, we hope you’re all well and that love is in the air.
This email is going out to the awesome ones who responded to the poll (51 out of approximately 150 recipients). It turns out it hit a lot of people’s spam folders, so next year we will do a better job of clarifying the subject, etc.
As the survey has grown, there are now too many answers for us to add comments and include links, so this year the answers are coming as filtered lists (we cut where necessary, to try to be useful and concise).
Thank you so much for your answers!

Top 5 Apps to Avoid Distractions and Increase Productivity
Distraction may not look threatening at a glance, but it comes with a hefty price, which is paid in the form of declined productivity and a lack of focus. But, don’t worry, this article will teach you how to easily avoid distractions, and become productive.
Few major distractions that drain our productivity and focus are notifications from Facebook, Messenger, Skype, Whatsapp and other apps, but the right tools can help you avoid distractions and be more productive.
There are many apps to help you maintain your focus and avoid distractions, they come as browser extensions that block distracting sites, some as apps for your Mac or Pc that hide all the apps, keeping in view the important one.
Certain apps compassionately notify when you get sidetracked, and some.. a little more strictly, but they are all helpful, depending which helps you focus.
Distraction is a global phenomenon and is backed with a lot of studies and researches which have proven time after time about the ill effects of distraction. One such research conducted by Psychological scientists at George Mason University found out that; “Not only does distraction suck up your time, but it also hurts the quality of the work.”
Another mind-bending study, held at the University of California Irvine, showed that a minor distraction in your work takes up 23 minutes and 15 seconds to regain focus back to your work! It’s hard to believe, but the studies say it, telling how critical it is to avoid distractions.
So, below are some of the top apps that will help you fight distractions and help you focus on your work.

And! this app is serious when it comes to fighting distractions, as it also has a feature that can lock down internet access on your devices…
You can use Freedom app either manually by creating a session and choosing what you want to block when you want to focus, Or, you can automatically set the app to switch off distractions for a certain period every day, for instance, you can block YouTube at 3 pm every day until 11 am.
And, in case you doubt you can sneak your way to change the app settings, the app has a “Locked Mode”, which will prevent you from changing any settings in the middle of the session.

The Future of the Tablet
Adobe finally released its new app iPad native drawing app, Adobe Fresco. This news is interesting, less about the app itself, but the potential and the future of iPads, or tablets, or personal computers in general.
The iPad came out in 2010 with much fanfare as the next (and last) major hardware launch with Steve Jobs at the helm of Apple after the iPhone. Many people thought it was the end of print books and magazines and the final death blow to the personal computer. That didn't happen. Far from it.
The iPad lacked a true major use case aside from portable entertainment (watching videos, gaming, casual surfing). Turns out that WiMP (windows, mouse, pointer) interfaces were still valuable especially for knowledge workers who need to easily and seamlessly manipulate their machines to their jobs, aside from other basic needs such as computing power, speed, and availability of their apps. The iPad, while was much cheaper and more portable than a PC, lacked the software that people used on a daily basis—or was very limited due to its performance and interface, which was closer to a smartphone than that of a personal computer. Everything had to go through Apple's App Store which is a huge departure from local apps you can download directly, or working straight from your browser. It didn't quite live up to its hype as was expected to because of these drawbacks. (NOTE: The first tech startup I worked on was an iPad application so my experience on this is pretty direct).
But the thing with technology is, it takes time. Sometimes, a long time. Especially for something like the iPad where integration of hardware and software is paramount. We can't use the iPhone as the standard barometer because the product was just much better than its smartphone predecessors. It's also the single best selling product (in terms of revenue of all-time), an extreme power law that is on a class of its own. The iPad, on the other hand, has a different adoption curve because it seeks to replace the personal computer meant for knowledge work. And replacing habits, especially one where your job is on the line, is much harder to do than replace more casual use cases (messaging, playing games, photography, etc.).
This is to say the iPad—or more generally, the tablet—is most certainly not a flop. Rather, it's still in its early innings and perhaps just beginning to hit its stride. They enhanced its form function aside from strictly touch screen into having a pencil and a keyboard, which makes it more similar to WiMP. It's sharper, much faster, and has as big local storage as a PC. This is allowing basic use cases that previously needed a PC to be done smoothly on an iPad (docs, sheets, presentations). It's also allowing new use cases that weren't done on PCs like draw illustrations (at least directly, as you needed an external device like a Wacom tablet) using Adobe Fresco to be done smoothly on an iPad. And this is presenting exciting possibilities about its future.
It took Apple nearly 30 years (from the Apple 2 to the Macbook Pro) to go fully mainstream. I don't think it'll take the iPad 30 years, but it's about to go on year 10 and the next decade of its lifespan is about to be way more explosive than the first. I won't be surprised if the PC revolution is unbundled into the smartphone (iPhone), the tablet (iPad or Surface Pro), and the professional computer divided into the light (Chromebook/Macbook Air), medium (Macbook Pro), and heavy (Mac Pro) as adoption moves to these more specialized machines. All of the devices mentioned will only get better, faster, and more ubiquitously connected the Internet.
Because of this, I suspect college kids and the standard knowledge worker after 2030 will more likely have a tablet than a PC or laptop. Both the terms "PC" and "laptop" already feel ancient. That's a sign of things to come.
NOTE: It's not a tablet but I'm bullish on the Chromebook. I don't use one, but I've seen high schools operate with strictly a Chromebook with all their files in the cloud and with more applications being browser-based, I can see this as being a true general purpose machine. With Google focusing on the Chromebook instead of tablets, they feel they have stronger positioning with it (which comes bundled with their services) than just a hardware play.

Doing the iMpossible: Pulling the Plug
This past weekend, I made the (rather difficult) decision to pull the plug on my Lumia 950. I’ve never owned a smartphone that wasn’t running some version of Microsoft’s mobile platform. My first smartphone was a Motorola Moto Q 9c – and it was a fantastic phone. I’d moved to a Samsung Omnia after that, then had an HTC phone before finally moving to a Nokia. The Lumia Icon was probably my all-time favorite phone – both hardware and OS – but I couldn’t help but be excited by the idea of Continuum with Windows 10 Mobile, so I made the decision to drop the Icon (and Verizon), switch to AT&T, and get the Lumia 950.
Speaking strictly of hardware, the phone was fantastic. It was speedy, the screen was gorgeous, it had a dedicated camera button, expandable storage, a removable battery, the camera tech was expectedly top-notch, and so on. It was a solid device. Design was simple, but it had the quality feel of a Nokia (despite lacking the branding). It was a device that showed a lot of promise, loaded with an OS that promised even more. Unfortunately, the OS wasn’t what I’d consider to be complete when the phone launched. It lacked features, had bugs, and was a little awkward to use. But I had faith that it would get better. And it did. For a while.
The Windows 10 Anniversary Update fixed a lot of my complaints and the system became nearly as usable as Windows Phone 8.1. Some things it did better – like notifications, quick settings, the Store layout, SMS relay through Skype. Some things it did worse – like being consistently reliable.
The past 3 months or so have been exceptionally difficult on Windows 10 Mobile. Notifications and messages failed to come through, Skype’s SMS relay was pretty consistently broken (requiring the Messaging app to be opened for the messages to finally appear in Skype), the screen would fail to turn on when the power button was pressed or when the phone would ring. There was a lot of bad happening, and it wasn’t just for me and my phone. My wife, who also had a Lumia 950, and my mom, who has a Lumia Icon with Windows 10 Mobile, experienced similar issues.
My dad has an Icon running an insider build of Windows 10 Mobile, and things seem to be going better for him. I rely on my phone for work and can’t really risk running a pre-production OS with potentially more bugs, and I certainly can’t sit around waiting for the Creator’s Update to roll out so my phone might be useable again. With app publishers abandoning the platform at an increasing rate, Microsoft failing to fix the usability, and the promise of a better future on Windows Mobile being next to nonexistent, I needed to do something I thought I would never do: Jump ship to another mobile platform.
I’m a Microsoft fanboy through and through, but I will (eventually) admit they’re wrong and adjust course when they make a mistake. And they’ve made quite a few recently. I was excited to have the Band 2 on my wrist, I got less and less excited with each new warranty claim. I made a total of 3 before calling it quits and joining team Fitbit (the last refurbished Band I was sent is sitting unused on my coffee table). Unfortunately, despite Fitbit’s support of Windows Mobile, the lack of GATT support on Windows 10 Mobile means that functionality between my Fitbit Blaze and phone was limited to syncing up my progress. Notifications were a no-go, and that was a pretty big deal for me – having purchased the Blaze specifically for that reason. GATT support was promised around April of 2016 and arrived in preview for insiders mid-January 2017. Too little, too late.
Windows 10 Mobile has been a long and bumpy road of promises, excitement, and failure to deliver on both those. While the platform works exactly as I’d expect, does everything I need it to, and has the UI I prefer, it had gotten to the point where I was lucky if the phone would let me answer a call or notified me of an incoming text. Both those, I feel, are pretty important when communication is a primary function of a phone. This growing frustration peaked when I was on-call for work and received several phone calls I couldn’t answer – I sat there powerless trying to get my phone to respond as Strong Bad’s “The System is Down” blasted through my speakers. I now feel an overwhelming sensation of anxiety every time I hear that song, and I’m blaming Microsoft for that emotional damage.
I reached a point where I knew that I couldn’t continue like that. It was time to take off the rose-tinted glasses and stop seeing Windows Phone for how nice it used to be and see it for the abusively neglectful platform that it now is. I still hold to hope that it can change but, until that time, I need to say goodbye” and see other phones.
The phone I’d spend the next two or so years with was a big decision to make – and it’s one that, ultimately, came down to the charger. It might seem like a weird thing to base my decision on, but I have my reasons. Having switched from Verizon to AT&T, the Google Pixel isn’t available through my carrier, and I don’t have the kind of money to just buy one outright. I did take a look at Samsung’s offerings, but the Galaxy S7 / S7 Edge use USB micro to charge – which is terrible for 2 reasons:
1. USB Micro
2. Since our Lumia 950s used USB type C (and every new device should start embracing this standard) we got rid of nearly all our USB micro cables.
There was an LG phone in-store that used USB type C, but I hadn’t done any prior research on that device to make an educated decision. In the end, the iPhone seemed like the best choice for me. There’s a lot of sacrifice in choosing iOS over Android – and switching to iOS from Windows – but Apple has a huge amount of pull in the mobile market, their OS is solid and not overly bloated, and their hardware is refined and reliable. I’m not the biggest fan of Apple, and I’ve been very critical of their lack of innovation over the past 5 years, but they do make quality devices, and that’s something I can get behind. As an added bonus, I have an Apple TV and an iPad, so we have Lightning cables to go around (which is why the charger a phone uses is important to me).
The next chapter of my mobile life begins with the iPhone 7 Plus. I don’t think it’s going to be an easy chapter; there will be trials as I try to learn to love something new and different. So, so different. But it’s something that had to happen. I need a dependable phone that will continue to be supported for the next two or so years. I need a phone that just works, and that’s what I got. I’m still hopeful Microsoft will turn things around so I can return to their loving embrace. Until then, I need to be realistic and have something reliable in my pocket.

iPad vs. iPad Mini vs. Kindle Fire
Okay, my aged (ayyyyjeeeeed) iPad is about to die. You know it is time to replace when your mobile banking app tries to update, but is no longer supported. {{sideeyes}} Also, it is taking five minutes to write a paragraph due to the stuttering, delayed typing. Argh. But I shouldn’t complain. It has served me well.
Few questions to help me replace:
1) iPad Mini Owners:
If you own an iPad Mini, do you write on it any significant amount? I don’t want to haul around a Bluetooth keyboard, so that’s not an option. I’m an adult with adult-sized hands. Do you ever get used to it?
2) Kindle Fire Owners:
Mr. Who recently replaced his iPad 3 (grrrr, I have an iPad 2. It was MYYYYYYY turn) with a Kindle Fire. It is nifty swifty. And the price? Amazing compared to the price of an iPad. He loves it, but he doens’t write on it. He uses it strictly for reading, surfing, and emails/texts. (I really miss being able to seamlessly text from apple product to apple product, though. it is NOT simple to make it work.)
Is there a writing app that works similarly to Ulysses or Scrivener? I’ve looked in the Kindle app store, and nothing has jumped out at me. I don’t want to use a standard text editor ala Word or Pages. I love my story-writing software. And if there is such software, does it talk with a PC or Mac?
Thanks for your help. Consider your answers as food for my muse.

Signs of the old Apple
For a long time, there’s been two competing narratives about Apple’s pricing:
They’re “premium”: sure, they’re expensive, and yes, you pay for the brand name. But when you compare them with products of equal quality, counting not just feature specs but design, materials, and build quality—so an iPhone with a Galaxy S, a MacBook with a Dell XPS—they’re rarely unreasonably higher, and the user experience of macOS and iOS is arguably1 worth it.
They’re “luxury”: there’s nothing about a Mac, an iPhone, or an iPad that truly makes it better than its competition; the only reason anyone buys Apple products is for the supposed status of owning them and showing them off.
For most of my Apple-using life, I’ve unsurprisingly been in the first camp. But for the past, oh, let’s call it five years, Apple has been making this…difficult.
Phone prices have climbed faster than their sizes, especially at the high end;
Their vaunted hardware engineering and design teams have become tethered to form over function, leading most infamously to the “butterfly” keyboard that prioritized thinness at the expense of not only typing feel but reliability;2
Laptop prices have also climbed fast, possibly because prioritizing form over function turns out to be expensive;
While iOS 7 made significant UX changes, those changes sometimes came at the expense of clarity (e.g., little to no visual cues as to where tap targets are), and later development seems fairly stagnant, other than a few changes for the iPad;3
While Apple has always had a “we know what’s best for our users” attitude and has never been super chatty about their decisions, they’ve just made themselves look arrogant and unresponsive a few times, most infamously over battery management.4
But the two products announced this week show off two old-school Apple moves we haven’t seen in, well, a while.
First, the new MacBook Air. They’re bringing the Magic Keyboard to it, as we all assumed (hoped?) they would, fixing the biggest problem with their laptops of the last few years. They’ve upped the starting SSD from 128G to a more respectable 256G, and upgraded to a modern Intel processor that can turboboost up to twice as fast as last year’s Air—and that’s just the base processor: you can get up to a quad-core i7.
And they lowered the price.
For the last few years Apple’s been far more likely (especially with Macs but arguably with the iPhone, too) to improve a product some ways while making it worse in others and raising the price, playing right into that “luxury” narrative. But this wasn’t always Apple’s modus operandi. For many years, their classic move was upgrading a product while keeping the same price point: you still paid $1499, but now the CPU was faster, you had more RAM, you had a bigger hard drive, and so on. But the new Air is back down to the semi-magic $999 point (and Apple loudly trumpets that it’s $899 with the education discount). To be fair, we’ve been seeing more of this from Apple in the last couple of years—there was a modest price drop moving from the iPhone 8 to the XR, and while high-end iPads climb to nosebleed pricing territory, the low-end model has gained power while dropping in price—but there was a multiyear stretch when “get more for the same money” became “get mildly aggrieved for another couple hundred.”
Second, the new iPad Pro—but especially the new iPad Magic Keyboard, which has a trackpad, a USB pass-through port, an amazing cantilever design like no other tablet keyboard case I’ve ever seen, and a wheeze-inducing price point of $299–349 depending on size. This is also a classic Apple move: the damn thing is so expensive you can’t help but think of it as overpriced, but there’s literally no competition for it. You are not going to be able to get a keyboard case that nice from anyone else. (Amazon will fill up with knockoff versions for $99 or less, and they will all be pretty bad by comparison, because that’s the way of things.)
Personally, I’ve grown frustrated with the iPad’s software limitations at both the OS and app level. I wrote about that in “The iPad needs more focus on the little things” last August, which concluded with,
Don’t get me wrong: I’m not giving up my iPad. Who knows what iPadOS 14 will bring? But in the meantime, I confess I’m watching what happens with the next MacBook Air revision pretty closely.
Well, that update is here, and frankly, they knocked it out of the park. It’s pretty much everything I was waiting for.
And yet, if the iPad Magic Keyboard lives up to its promise, it’s the keyboard case for the iPad that I’ve always wanted. I still do love the iPad, and the Magic Keyboard might make it the best portable computing device for me ever—in terms of hardware. Unfortunately, hardware won’t fix the frustrations I have with the platform. So now, I suppose I’m watching what happens with the next major iPadOS revision pretty closely.
For the time being, though? The portable computer for me—and, I think, for anyone who wants the best laptop—sure seems like it’s the new Air.
I’m using the term literally here: many of the Linux-using folks that I know don’t like the macOS user experience at all, and long-time Windows users often find the small differences frustrating, just like I do when trying to use Windows (or a Linux desktop environment). [return]
Other things I’d put in that camp are the Touch Bar, a clever idea that, five years on, remains a solution in search of a problem; the change to make the bottom row of the keyboard the same size as the other rows and the left and right arrow keys full-height, just so everything is perfectly symmetrical; the spartan set of ports on modern Mac laptops, even the biggest ones that could surely spare space for a micro SD card slot; the now discontinued 12″ MacBook. [return]
I know that undersells some of the changes for the iPad, and I’m not throwing in with the “iPad multitasking is a fiasco that ruined everything” camp. The biggest problem isn’t features being unintuitive—as many people point out, little about any modern GUI is intuitive, strictly speaking—but being undiscoverable. For a quick example, you can display folder contents in both macOS Finder and iOS Files by icon, list view, or column view. Finder controls those through little buttons; you can find that feature for yourself. In Files, though, you swipe down to reveal the iOS equivalents, and there is no visual indicator or other affordance that suggests swiping down is a meaningful action. There are more of these hidden gestures in iPadOS with each major release, and even the ones I know about get frustrating. (Swipe up from the bottom edge to pull up the dock or go back to the home screen or pull up the multitasking space navigator? This is bad UX design, okay? It’s bad.) [return]
The narrative to this day is still “Apple secretly slowed down your old phone to get you to buy a new one.” That’s wrong on multiple levels, but the secretly part isn’t. If Apple had treated battery management like a public-facing feature from the start, they’d have saved themselves a massive PR fiasco and multiple lawsuits. [return]

When better tech means more focus
Excuse for me the love letter to Apple, but I’d kind of missed it these past 18 years.
I used to be a Mac person. Through and through. (Other than that brief affair with a lovely Commodore 64 in the early 1980s, I mean.) Mac was all I would work on. I find the interface easy to navigate, almost instinctive. Yes, I do realize that’s how they’re designed and built, but as you’ll know if you’ve ever tried using the Canada Customs app at Pearson Airport, not everything that’s designed and built to be instinctive and user-friendly actually is, you know, instinctive and user-friendly.
Mais bon, passons.
Mac, then. That was my brand. I would do everything on it, including building websites in the early 1990s. Yes, sir. In old-fashioned HTML that was as clunky as it was inelegant. But we persevered, and - you’re welcome. Progress has been made, and not just a little.
But marriage intervened to ruin my blissful relationship.
The fellow I married was - and still is - a Windows enthusiast. Why, for a while there he even owned a Windows phone. Not for very long, because they didn’t work worth beans, but he gave it as good a try as anyone would. When I moved in with him, in late 2000, I had two Macs. A laptop and a desktop, and I won’t bore you with stories about how long and cumbersome it was to keep my files synced. Because I kept an apartment in Montreal I left the desktop there and brought my laptop to his place in Ottawa. But eventually, because we wanted to be able to share computers and files between same, it became necessary for one of us to switch.
That one of us was me, because he was too invested in Windows. He had more expensive programs that only ran on this platform - at the time, it was the wonderfully quaint Windows 95, which was way better than Windows 2000 and only marginally inferior to Windows XP. We eventually got through Windows 2003 and Vista then Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 and ultimately Windows 10, which works reasonably well to be fair about it.
But. Now that we don’t share computers or files or a life anymore, and especially now that most of my work is in the cloud using apps and programs that aren’t platform-specific and sync files all by themselves… you see where I’m going.
I’ve been working on a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 for the last four years. Again, to be fair, it’s a great little machine. It lets me do all sorts of stuff, including editing heavy video files and what have you. But it’s four years old now, and a few months back I started to think about what I should get as a replacement when the time came. The Surface was still working quite well, but you know how these things go and I didn’t want to get stuck without a working machine and/or having to make a decision super quickly because suddenly I was computer-less only to regret it later.
I thought and researched and looked around at just about all the options. I don’t do a lot of video editing these days, but I wanted a machine that could deal with that, just in case the bug comes back. I do, however, use Lightroom every day to edit my pictures. Photoshop too, sometimes. And I write lots. The rest of my work is web-based and pretty routine.
One of my favourite features about the Surface is that it’s light and eminently portable. I wanted that again because laptops are so 2012. Touchscreens are pretty much mandatory, too. I like to be able to use a pen because I have delusions about one day being good enough a visual artist to justify drawing and sketching on the screen. OK, so the pen is not strictly speaking necessary. But I like it.
There are tons of options out there, as you’ll know if you’ve been outside the house at all this year or browsed Amazon, but nothing seemed worth the effort. Except for getting a newer Surface Pro, I guess. The price is right, and the machine works well.
I was in the process of slouching towards that lukewarm decision when, on a shopping trip with Eldest, we went to the Apple Store for no good reason at all, which is of course always the best reason to go there. I saw the iPad Pro and oh my, love.
I’ve had iPads in my life, starting with an original purchased wayyyy back in 2010, an iPad 2, and an iPad mini. I’ve also had nothing by iPhones for the last dozen years or so. But this Pro machine was different, as it promised to be as powerful as a computer but as light, convenient and portable as a regular iPad. It’s more expensive than a regular iPad, but in the same general price range as the Surface.
Made for me, you could say.
It doesn’t have USB ports (my files are on external drives) or the ability to use a mouse, which almost triggered an anxiety attack, but other than that it’s about all I ever wanted. Could I transfer my files to a different form of storage? No doubt. I’ve got iCloud and it’s working fine. Could I live without a mouse? Maybe…
I played with it a lot in the store, and slowly warmed up to it. What really got my attention was that - as with the phone - you can add a keyboard in French and type in French using a QWERTY keyboard. On Windows if you switch to the AZERTY layout, which is too much for my brain and fingers. I want to write in French without switching back and forth between keyboard configurations. Over the years I’ve had to kludge my way to bilingual sort-of happiness using shortcuts for French accents and ignoring the spellchecker going insane, or sometimes just using my iPhone to write something in French. This iPad Pro would be like my iPhone except much bigger with a real keyboard.
I was sold. But my computer was still working… I waited very patiently until it started misbehaving in weird ways a few weeks ago and I am now convinced its impending doom is not too far away. Time to purchase. I did this week, and it’s a beautiful little tool (NOT a toy) I got myself.
Of course, like a phone or regular iPad, it’s mostly app-based. And multitasking is less convenient than on a computer especially when you’re a wiz at mouse handling like yours truly and take perverse pride in handling 16 open tabs in three different browsers at a time. But you know what? Within hours of using the iPad Pro I noticed something weird. I wasn’t multitasking nearly as much. And I noticed something else, too: That not multitasking nearly as much was a wonderful thing indeed for my concentration and focus. Probably for my productivity as well, but the sample study is too small right now to be sure of that.
So anyway. Not that Apple needed my endorsement to stay in business. But wow am I glad I’ve resumed my love affair with it. So long, Windows.

WHERE TO A BOSS
Performance isn't everything, you say? And if Microsoft's applications only work with some clients, competitors will be able to find a few smart people to a site that caused them to waste lots of time. Partly this is because the rest of the world that mean people don't rule, and that people choose mostly based on how intellectual the work sounds when described in research papers than commercial software, but there will be a while before any American city can bring itself to do that? I created in the first step, and ngood and nbad are the number of false positives will not tend to be short. Sort routines you can write software that recognizes individual properties of spam. The ones on startups get tested by about 70 people every 6 months. I don't mean this in an insulting way—of the kind of people who will put up with them because they need a job. 9762507 cgi 0.
The American way is to make more than you spend. Hosting applications is a lot more work.1 If it's not what you want to take a break from working, I walk into the square, just as we marvel now at what early car owners put up with, just as Facebook was though they probably didn't realize it when they got all the Harvard undergrads.2 Even at the morning-after valuations of March and April 2001, the people running the networks will take the easy route and try to keep the old model: mainframe applications are all server-based applications will often be useful to let two people edit the same document, for example, is all math. What sustains a startup in the beginning it works. The example of painting can teach us not only how to manage our own work, but on gaining control of some bottleneck. Over time the teams have gotten smaller, faster, and you can release it as soon as they're discovered. If the movie industry could have any law they wanted, where would they stop? In addition to catching bugs, they were exceptional.
Every time the site gets slow, I fortify myself by recalling McIlroy and Bentley's famous quote The key to performance is elegance, not battalions of special cases. Here's a case where we can trade efficiency for even the smallest increase in convenience.3 Even now I think if you looked inside the average Windows user you'd find a huge and pretty much 100% of their advice was about investor psychology. The kind of people who are supposed to be doing something else; and though businesses, their founders often know nothing about business. The ups and downs are surprisingly extreme. So we're in much the same position as someone buying technology for large organizations don't care if they pay a fortune for mediocre software. The user doesn't know what a programming language is, they'll say something like Oh, a high-level language? I can think of possibilities that shock even me, with my conscientiously broadened mind.
Curiously, a filter based on word pairs see below might well catch this one: cost effective, setup fee, money back—pretty incriminating stuff. In fact, it's the computer Steve Huffman wrote Reddit on.4 I don't really blame Amazon for applying for the one above.5 It was a classic metacircular interpreter written on top of Common Lisp, with a definite owner, and with interfaces between them that are as carefully designed and, if possible. So let's look at Silicon Valley the way you'd look at a product made by a company called Miquelrius. They're a lot of them.6 Look at the individual, not where they went to college. A programming language is for thinking of programs, not for expressing programs you've already thought of. I was 13 that TV was addictive, so I have the inside story about admissions. This essay is derived from an invited talk at ICFP 2004.
I suppose that's worth something. He was like Michael Jordan.7 The tragedy of the situation is that by far the greatest liability of not having gone to the college you'd have liked is your own feeling that you're thereby lacking something.8 Though the situation is that by far the greatest liability of not having gone to the college you'd have liked is your own feeling that you're thereby lacking something. But you're asking for trouble if you try to decide what to optimize, just log into a server and see what's consuming all the CPU. I'm more forgiving than she is, but my guess is that someone at Yahoo goofed.9 You don't have to do that?10
In the period just before the industrial revolution, some of the software support for CDs and DVDs wasn't ready. That will increasingly be the route to worldly success. Or rather, any client, and if you have to make it something that hackers themselves will want to use yourself. My guess is that someone at Yahoo goofed. Is there no configuration of the bits in memory of a 4K TRS-80.11 The arrival of desktop computers inspired a lot of mistakes. Programs should be written for people to start startups. Back in 1997, one of the most powerful tools you can find a good teacher.
Unless you're planning to write math applications, of course, the probabilities should be calculated individually for each user.12 Viaweb, to the extent I thought about the question at all. I wanted to do any amount of math you need as a hacker is a lot more than Yahoo. I remember time seeming to stretch out, so we were on the same parts. Don't be intimidated. Don't worry what people will say.13 Don't you learn things at the best schools. Half our earnings were too. I could keep up current rates of spam filtering, I would consider this problem solved.

And the expertise and connections the founders of failing startups would even be conscious of this theory is that in the definition of property.
Trevor Blackwell points out that another way in which internal limits are expressed. And yet there is something in the Neolithic period. Strictly speaking it's impossible to write great software in Lisp.
There are two simplifying assumptions: that the big winners aren't all that matters, just that they're all that value, don't destroy the startup is compress a lifetime's worth of work into a fancy restaurant in San Francisco wearing a jeans and a wing collar who had to for some reason insists that you end up. Why I decided to install Messenger Kids
I’ve been struggling with whether or not to download Facebook’s new app aimed at children, Messenger Kids, onto my daughter’s iPad. This weekend, I took the plunge. I sat with her as she typed her first message and sent a selfie. I watched as she discovered GIFs. I wasn’t sure I had done the right thing. No one wants to surrender their kids to online social networks, but children can be exposed to even more danger by going around their parents’ backs. This point was drilled home for me a few days ago, when a friend discovered her daughter downloaded the messaging app IMVU without her parents’ knowledge. The child was almost immediately contacted by an adult man, whose conversations indicated he was a child predator in the early stages of grooming his victim. (The police were called and are now investigating.) The child told her parents she installed the app to talk to school friends about a game they were playing. Her friends were on the app, and she wanted to be, too. Another friend of mine recently installed Kik on her daughters’ Android phones because they wanted to message their friends, and their phones didn’t have cell service. She didn’t know that Kik was one of the worst of them all in terms of its adoption by child abusers, according to a 2017 investigation that dubbed it the “de facto app for grooming children online.” (I filled her in.) https://youtu.be/95UdW6X5rto You see, the kids are already online. You can’t unplug them. That ship has sailed. There are plenty of reasons to hate the idea of Messenger Kids, though. The messaging solution with built-in parental controls has arrived at a time when there’s mounting concern over how use of social media has detrimental impacts on people’s well-being, as well as concern over how technology companies have irresponsibly developed products aimed to addict their users without understanding the negative consequences of those actions. Into this new understanding of technology’s downsides and dark nature comes Messenger Kids. That’s pretty bad timing. Child health advocates have called for Facebook to shut down Messenger Kids. They make valid points. The app has even been compared to cigarette companies advertising their products to minors. But as a parent myself, it’s been difficult to for me to dismiss Messenger Kids as an entirely evil product. What’s worse, I think, are the other messaging apps that have for years turned a blind eye to the fact that they have user bases filled with children – not just minors under the age of 18, but actual children, under the age of 13. A number of social apps are troublesome, too, because they have messaging components built-in. Snapchat and Musical.ly, for example, are heavily used by the under-13 crowd who have learned to lie about their ages in order to participate. But Snapchat has been seeing slowing user growth, so its first priority will not be making sure all its users are of age. Because Wall Street strictly judges social networks on growth metrics, they’re often scared to purge fake accounts and underage users. Unlike Facebook, most companies don’t have the luxury of making choices that could slow user growth, or time spent in-app, as Facebook just remarkably did. I don’t want to demonize parents who have allowed their kids to use social apps at young ages. None of the questions around kids’ use of devices and social media are easy. There isn’t one set of definitive guidelines about what’s right or wrong. Ask yourself: is it okay to let the kids use Snapchat, when all they really want to do is play with the funny face filters and send those pictures to a few friends? Is letting them goof around on Musical.ly a better alternative to YouTube given the latter’s far more public, and sizable audience of viewers (and ongoing issuesaroundchild exploitation?) Should you turn on iMessage for the kids, so they can text grandma and grandpa? For some parents, the answer is a hard no. They lock down kids’ devices to include nothing but pre-approved games. This is problematic, too, because those same kids will be soon old enough to be handed their own smartphones. They’ll have had no time to practice online communication in a more supervised environment. And simply banning apps doesn’t teach children how to critically evaluate them, either.
Arguably, we should have had better solutions for kids years ago. Apple should have developed parental controls for iMessage as soon as they began marketing iPads as kids’ devices. The OS makers should have created “kids profiles” for iPads and Android devices that are as simple as creating a kids profile on Netflix. But they have not. Facebook is the first to acknowledge that kids are already all over messaging apps and social media, and it created a solution to address the lack of parental oversight of kids’ existing behavior. Messenger Kids, for all its faults, offers something in between full access to apps and none at all. It’s like a set of training wheels for the online world. A place where, in theory, parent and child work together to practice messaging. A place where parents have say-so over who the child can talk to, and who they cannot. That being said, I do believe that Messenger Kids, for all its security benefits, will be used as a gateway drug to entice the next generation of Facebook users. And I do not like that my kid is being pulled into Facebook this young. But ignoring the chance to teach her about social messaging doesn’t feel right either. So with conflicted emotions, I installed Messenger Kids to my daughter’s tablet this weekend. I added friends and approved adults, like family members. The app is simple to use in the way that Facebook products are, thanks to the company’s years of understanding of user interface and user experience development. I sat with my child as she typed out her first message on Messenger Kids and snapped a selfie to share in a chat. When she found the app’s GIF button, she then sent 10 in a row and we talked about how that could be annoying to the recipient. We talked about how to use GIFs appropriately. I also helped her understand when it was time to end a conversation to respect the recipient’s time. We’ll probably have to repeat these lessons and others a million more times. The app still requires parents do spot checks of their child’s device to ensure bullying is not taking place. (I’d like to see Facebook implement an alerts system based on keyword scanning and sentiment analysis for this.)
I realize that I could have had a similar messaging “practice session” on iMessage, but not everyone my daughter wants to talk with has an Apple device, and few kids her age (she’s 8) have smartphones with cell service, which limits her ability to practice over SMS text messaging. Messenger Kids, presumably, could reach more of her friends and family. Unfortunately, I doubt that many of her friends’ parents will install the app thanks to the current narrative that any amount of social media for children is a bad amount of social media; that kids shouldn’t be using social media – period; that kids don’t know how to behave online, so banning apps is the right solution, not just setting limits on screen time while prioritizing in-person play time. The narrative is that Facebook is gross and wrong for targeting kids, so obviously don’t support the company by installing this app. I worry this is not the answer. I worry that the pundits are getting this wrong. I worry also that I’m wrong. I don’t know. I know Facebook seems untrustworthy. I know social media turned out not to be the force for good that people once thought. It can be beautiful and kind and horrible and ugly, just like the world itself. But I also know it won’t disappear overnight. If you will give your kids a smartphone one day, shouldn’t you teach them how to use it, too? Shouldn’t that include messaging and social media? Shouldn’t you teach them while they’re still young enough to listen? Facebook’s new app is one of the only messaging apps that exists to protect kids, and one of few that could scale. Maybe Messenger Kids is the right product from the wrong company. But until Apple or Google step up, it’s what we’ve got. Read the full article

A Mobile Gantry Crane Is Your Instant Workstation
What comes to thoughts when we say workstation? In offices, men and women need to sit for long duration of time in one place. Restart the services: FabulaTech USB for Remote Desktop (Workstation Core) and FabulaTech Netlink 3 supervisor service or reboot your Computer. Is VR Ready with high-overall performance processors and graphics cards to bring VR to life. The D1 Desk from Andersen Furnishings brings an even much more contemporary sheen to the wooden work desk with its sophisticated gray finish and Nordic style. Some contemporary rendering programs take benefit of the GPU at times but that does hold not accurate for majority of the programs. And for GPU compute in applications such as bunkspeed or Catia Live Rendering (ray trace rendering), and Simulia Abaqus or Ansys (simulation), there is also area for an Nvidia Tesla K20 to turn the HP Z820 into an Nvidia Maximus certified workstation.
If we take into account the “standard” desktop pc nowadays to be a machine with 8GB of non-ECC memory, and we create a technique with 64GB of non-ECC memory, then we’ve just made a higher finish workstation with 8X higher likelihood of memory associated errors and failures than the average “low-cost” laptop. Extremely powerful 15″ and 17″ mobile workstations in a premium style that looks as very good as it performs. The Computer software Licensing Service reported that the version of SPPSvc does not match the policy. The unit comes common with an Integrated Matrox G200 video card. Like 2D CAD drawings, 3D models are normally vector-based, but the vectors consist of three dimensions, rather than two. Digital images can be sent and received over the net, shaving worthwhile time off each and every instance that a digital image is processed. To comply with federal mandates and support the Department’s Greening Diplomacy Initiative, the Department launched an agency-wide initiative to eliminate power waste across one hundred percent of its workstation computer systems.
It is through these workstations that customers share information with every other in a network. The Application Licensing Service reported that the license could not be found. The other two contain quad-core 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 4710MQ CPUs, eight-16GB of non-ECC DDR3 1600 MHz RAM, an NVIDIA Quadro K1100M or K2100M GPU with 2GB of RAM, and either a 1TB difficult drive or 512GB Turbo Drive M2. Each contain Thunderbolt two ports and Windows 7 preloaded with a Windows ten license. It is strictly up to the person student to choose which application plan to use. iPhone benefits and advantages over Android smartphones
10. Quick and easy to use
While learning how to use any new piece of kit can take some time, even the most confused tech user can master an iPhone in a short while. The layout is simple, with everything given a clear symbol and name, such as Settings or Camera.
It's easy to add email accounts and change key settings too. Compare this with the confusing widgets and icons layout of Android - which can vary from one phone to the next as firms load their bloatware and software tweaks - and Apple definitely has the edge.
9. Lots of high-quality peripherals
Since smartphones first appeared on the scene, gadget companies have worked to create new add-ons to expand their functionality. Interestingly, despite boasting a bigger market share than Apple, the peripherals market has tended to be more focused on iPhones than Android handsets.
This is because, being an open platform, there is no uniformity within the Android ecosystem regarding key factors, such as the size of devices or the software version they run. As a result creating a peripheral for an Android phone isn't as easy or lucrative for the gadget maker as it would be for them to do it on an iPhone, because its dimensions and software are strictly controlled by Apple.
As a result, the iPhone is a far more solid choice for users looking to pimp their smartphones.
8. Sensible screen sizes
For the past few years Android phones have grown massively in screen size. In fact some have become so comically large that watching someone make a phone call on them almost resembles a scene from old comedy show Trigger Happy TV. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is 5.7in for example.
By contrast the iPhone remains a normal-sized phone that fits easily in your jacket of trouser pocket without creating an unfortunate bulge, while also being comfortable to hold while making calls or writing text messages.
Some claim the iPhone is too small for enjoying video or web browsing, but most iPhone owners would probably dispute this. It seems clear that Apple's design gurus, led by Sir Jony Ive, are more than happy to stick with a sensible 4in display.
7. Still the best-looking phones on the market
One area where Apple has always had an edge is overall allure. Despite years of competition, iPhone devices remain the best looking on the market, with sleek edges and clean lines being the hallmark of Ive's work at Apple.
In fact, the designs are so good that Ive received a knighthood for his work. And who are we to argue with the Queen?
This is not to say devices from firms such as Samsung, Sony or HTC do not have good design too, but the benchmark against which they are all judged remains the iPhone, and Apple seems unlikely to lose this position of authority anytime soon. Just so long as the next iPhone is not rhombus shaped.
6. Clear point of contact for support from Apple
Apple's customer service and technical support is another reason to opt for an iPhone. If you're having issues with your iPhone - be it with setting up an email account or getting music onto your smartphone - staff at Apple's Genius Bar will show you how. Simply book an appointment at a local Apple Store, and the blue-shirted experts will offer their technical advice for free.
Furthermore, Apple also offers a one-year warranty on its devices for a range of issues, so if the worst should happen it will likely be fixed or replaced free of charge. This does not cover all issues but does provide a clear point of contact should your phone become faulty.
If not, it could be worth signing up to AppleCare+, an insurance scheme especially for iPhones, which offers hardware coverage, software support and direct access to Apple experts for technical support.
5. Consistent user experience keeps users happy
One thing that Apple has set the standard for on its mobile devices is the user experience, and the firm has obviously followed the maxim that if it isn't broken, you shouldn't fix it. Its iOS operating system has changed little since the first iPhone shipped back in 2007.
In fact, when Apple did overhaul the way its platform looked in iOS 7 last year, it received mixed reactions from customers, with many either loving or hating the changes.
This is a point driven home recently by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, at the CeBIT conference in Hanover, Germany, who argued that Apple products are already so good that it is difficult to improve on them, and that many customers like product stability.
"My favourite car has always been Mercedes, and they have stayed pretty much the same for years. I like that stability," he said, responding to suggestions that there had not been much innovation on show in the latest crop of iPhone devices. Clearly millions of users around the world agree with this sentiment.
4. All the apps you could ever need
At the start of 2014 Apple announced that a whopping $10bn was spent on its App Store in 2013 as the demand for iOS applications shows no sign of slowing down. Clearly, the place to be for apps is iOS.
Almost all major apps launch on iOS before moving to Android, such as Vine, Instagram and even our very own V3 Tablet App. This is because developers know that the best place to test the success of an app is the iOS platform, where charging some money may also illicit a purchase.
Furthermore, because Apple integrates the hardware and software performance of the iPhone, apps can take full advantage of the capabilities on offer. This is something that some mid-tier Android phones can struggle to provide.
3. Easy integration with other Apple devices
For those already wielding a MacBook or iPad, an iPhone seems the obvious smartphone choice thanks to Apple's deep iCloud integration.
Mac owners, for example, will be able to easily sync content on their laptop - such as documents, photos or music - with their iPhone, without having to manually do so. If they use an Android or Windows Phone device, however, users would likely find themselves having to download an annoying software suite, such as Samsung Kies, before being able to transfer content.
Windows laptop users with iPhones will see the benefits too, as iCloud is also supported on Microsoft's PC operating system.
iPad owners will perhaps see the biggest benefit of using an iPhone. Switching on automatic app downloads sets apps installed on the tablet to be automatically downloaded onto the iPhone, for example. Other content - such as iMessages, and notifications - will be automatically synced across both iDevices.
What's more, iCloud is extremely easy to set up. Simply turn it on, enter your Apple ID, and you are good to go.
2. Smooth operating system upgrades
Android is massively fragmented. Research last summer found over 12,000 different devices running the platform, while the archaic 2.3 Gingerbread version is still found on 19 percent of Android devices.
The most recent KitKat upgrade, touted as the best version of the platform, is used by just 2.5 percent of Android devices, according to recent data.
By contrast Apple's iOS update cycle and method is almost without equal: the newest iOS 7 system is proof of how successful the firm is at getting the vast majority of its users onto a single variant of its platform.
Since being released less than a year ago, at least 83 percent of devices now run iOS 7. As such updates from Apple, such as the recent iOS 7.1 update, are available for almost all users at the same time, and quickly installed.
1. Strong security thanks to strict approach to platform
Apple has always had a strong reputation in the security space. This is because, by taking a closed approach to managing its ecosystem, the company retains complete control over what applications and services run on its platform.
This makes it far more difficult for hackers to target its users, as they are unable to sneak Trojanised applications into its iTunes store. The tactic has proven very effective, and the platform has been hailed as the most secure on the market.
By comparison, Android - which takes an open approach and lets developers load whatever software and apps they like onto the Google Play store - is suffering a security pandemic and is being flooded with Trojanised applications made by criminals.
As such, for security-conscious folk, especially those in business, an iPhone could prove a much safer choice than an Android device, although Samsung is now fighting back here too, with its Knox service attemting to assuage Android security concerns.

Personal Capital Review – Managing All Your Investments in One Place
.sidebar-primary { top: -326px !important; }
One thing that I have craved for investors is a tool that allows you to sync all your financial accounts – your investment portfolio, checking and savings accounts, credit cards and other loan accounts – in one place, and then provides an investment-related analysis of your entire portfolio.
Mint does a fantastic job of giving you numbers, but falls short on providing any financial insight.
Then there's Blueleaf, which I subscribe to for my clients and find to be excellent on both accounts, but it's not available to the DIY investor.
So when I discovered Personal Capital, I was so excited to learn more that I immediately signed up and synced all of my investment accounts to it.
Open an account
Quick Look
Suite of investment tools and access to a financial advisor, completely free
Aggregate all of your accounts and then receive investment-related analysis of your entire portfolio
Premium wealth management option for an annual, all-inclusive fee
Fiduciary duty to act in your best financial interest
Open an account
What is Personal Capital?
Personal Capital is an online tool, available from your desktop or phone, that will help you:
Monitor all of your financial accounts in real-time – whether checking account, certificate of deposit, or retirement account
Get objective investment advice designed to make you – not the advisor – money
Provide investment options that are tailored to your goals
This is fantastic. You see, financial advisors that focus primarily on wealth management can be costly to keep around. They charge either a percentage of assets managed or a flat hourly rate that can run as high as several hundred dollars per hour, plus trading commissions and administrative fees. So, while these advisors can certainly be excellent, they're mostly unreachable unless you have millions of dollars to invest.
What's more, these wealth advisors aren’t really there to teach you how to put together a budget, they strictly manage your money.
Personal Capital to the rescue.
youtube
I know what you’re thinking. “Okay, great, but why should I trust these new guys?” I’ve got to be honest with you. There were two words I saw on Personal Capital’s website that made my heart skip a beat.
Those two words? Are you ready?
Fiduciary Obligation
Here's copy straight from their website:
Objective Advice: The sorry truth is that bankers and brokers are motivated to help themselves, not you. They are salespeople paid to push products, earning commissions and kickbacks when they do. In stark contrast, Personal Capital is an investment advisor. We accept a fiduciary obligation to act in your best interest, and our advice must be aimed at making money for you, not for us.
This is absolutely key with any financial advisor you talk to, whether in person or online. Fiduciary duty means the party has a legal obligation to put your interests above their own. Whereas normal brokers get paid commissions by getting you to churn your investments over and over (which costs you thousands of dollars in lost percentages here and there), Personal Capital is putting a requirement on themselves to put your interests above theirs.
This is huge!
Seriously, major points for Personal Capital from me on this one.
How Personal Capital Works
Personal Capital offers a free version and a premium version that features direct investment management. Whichever version you use, your account is actually held by Pershing Advisor Solutions, who acts as trustee for your account.
The Free Version.
With the free version, you get full use of the Personal Capital platform as well as a free consultation from a financial advisor. That advisor will give you a personalized analysis of your investments and recommendations as to what you can do with your portfolio. Your financial advisor can be contacted by phone, email, or by online chat.
In fact, the only feature that differentiates the free version from Personal Capital's premium product is their personalized portfolio management. Other than that, the free version includes all of the many features and benefits that are available on the platform, including the ability to aggregate all of your financial accounts, the 401(k) analyzer, objective investment advice and investment check-ups, a real-time financial dashboard, and access via the mobile app.
The Premium Version.
Also known as their Wealth Management program, Personal Capital's premium program includes active management of your investment portfolio. Like other similar products, they first determine your risk tolerance, personal preferences, and investment goals. Using that evaluation, they then create a portfolio tailored to fit within those parameters.
The fee structure for this service is as follows:
0.89% of the first $1 million
0.79% of the first $3 million
0.69% of the next $2 million
0.59% of the next $5 million
0.49% on balances over $10 million
These fees are quite reasonable when compared with fees of 1% to 2% that are customarily charged by active investment management services. The fees apply only to the assets you have under management at Personal Capital, and not to other investments that may be aggregated on the site, such as your 401(k) plan.
And, that's it. There are no additional fees. Personal Capital does not charge trading, commission, administrative, or any other types of investment fees. Your only cost is the annual, all-inclusive percentage that applies to your portfolio level.
Investment Strategy.
Personal Capital uses Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT), to manage your portfolio. MPT focuses less on individual security selection, and more on diversification across broad asset classes. Those asset classes include:
US stocks (which can include individual stocks)
US bonds
International stocks
International bonds
Alternative investments (including ETFs and commodities)
Cash
Though Personal Capital makes use of funds in constructing your portfolio, they may also include up to 100 individual securities in order to avoid being too heavily concentrated in a small number of companies.
I also discovered through my review that Personal Capital uses an integrated investment approach to managing your investments, which is a pretty unique feature. This means that they factor in all of your investment holdings – including those not managed by Personal Capital – in managing your portfolio. For example, though they don't manage your 401(k) account, your 401(k) allocations will be considered when making decisions about your investments that are actually managed by Personal Capital.
Review of Personal Capital Tools and Benefits
There is a long list of tools and benefits in using Personal Capital. Some of the more interesting ones include:
The Investment Checkup
This tool analyzes your investment portfolio, and gives a risk assessment of of it, to make sure that your level of risk is consistent with your goals. This will help you to create an asset allocation that will get you where you need to go with your investments.
401(k) Fund Allocation
This tool can be used to analyze your employer-sponsored 401(k) plan, even though it is not under the direct management of Personal Capital. It can be used to help you with your asset allocation, at least based on the investment options that your plan includes. This is an excellent tool since most 401(k) plans don't, any kind of investment management advice.
Retirement Planner
You can often find retirement planners or retirement calculators on various sites throughout the Internet. But what better place than to have it available where you also have all of your investment accounts listed? Personal Capital's Retirement Planner allows you to run numbers on your retirement to make sure that you will be prepared when the time comes. It allows you to incorporate major changes in your life into your retirement planning, such as the birth of a child or saving for college.
Net Worth Calculator.
Since Personal Capital aggregates all of your financial accounts on the same platform, they can also provide you with ongoing monitoring of your net worth. This will enable you to get the most comprehensive view of your financial situation, since it not only takes into account your assets, but also your debts. Net worth is the best single indicator of your overall financial strength, and this will give you an opportunity to track it.
Cash Flow Analyzer.
Though our focus in this article has been primarily on the investment side of Personal Capital, it's important to recognize that it also includes a budgeting capability. The Cash Flow Analyzer tracks your income and expenses from all sources, letting you know where you're spending money (or spending too much of it), which will help you to make adjustments that will improve your overall budget.
Mobile App.
Personal Capital's mobile app is a free feature that can be downloaded on Apple iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android. The mobile version has everything that is available on the desktop platform. It will enable you to track your investment portfolio, as well as your banking and credit card activity while you're on the go.
Tax Optimization.
Personal Capital uses tax optimization in the management of your portfolio. This feature is available to premium Wealth Management clients, and not if you are using the free version.
They use several tactics as part of tax optimization. For example, they include income producing investments in tax-deferred accounts, while growth oriented investments – that have the benefit of lower capital gains taxes – are held in taxable accounts.
In addition, they don't use mutual funds, but instead use exchange traded funds with a mix of individual stocks, since stocks can be easily bought and sold for tax loss harvesting. And speaking of tax loss harvesting, they use this strategy to sell losing stocks, which offsets the gains on the sale of winning stocks. This strategy minimizes the negative impact on your investment portfolio from income taxes.
Site Security.
Personal Capital uses bank level, military grade encryption on the platform. They also perform ongoing third-party security audits to test their systems. They also use device authentication so that each device you link your account must first be authenticated in order to be used
Crash Test Your Portfolio.
Investing expenses and taxes are the two things you can absolutely count on within the investing world. You can't rely on gains every year, but you can guarantee you will be taxed and you will pay expenses. That makes reducing those expenses as one of two ways you can control your investing destiny.
Thankfully, Personal Capital realizes this and offers you a really great tool to analyze the cost of your investments. Where this gets interesting is you can do an analysis on your employer’s 401 (k) plan (as discussed above) to discover whether your plan is amazing, just okay, or terrible as it comes to costs. You might be the person to go to HR to reveal just how expensive your plan is, lay out a new plan that would cut costs for everyone, and end up getting a promotion just for running a cost analysis.
Even if you don’t get promoted to head investment advisor for your employer, at the very least you’ll save your own retirement from exorbitant fees. And that’s a huge win we can all settle for.
Is Personal Capital for Me?
The idea of wealth management means you need to have wealth to manage. If you're struggling to get out of debt, that's okay, but Personal Capital probably isn't the best fit for you. In that case, Mint might be a better option and you can see a full comparison in my complete personal capital vs mint review.
However, if you are building up your retirement assets and want to be able to maximize your nest egg without gambling on penny stocks, then you should definitely sign up for the service. All of the features aside from the personalized portfolio management are absolutely free, so there's really no reason not give them a try.
