I just got an email that I got an interview for a summer job I really want. It's co-instructing a 6-week geology field camp! I've been a teaching assistant at a field camp before so I'm excited to move up the hierarchy a little.

Geologic mapping is my passion and I also love teaching, especially in the field. My field camp experience changed my career trajectory and I love helping students also discover that passion. But I also think there's an important conversation to be had about how field camp is traditionally seen as a 'rite of passage' by being as physically and mentally challenging as possible, which isn't always the best learning environment for students. The vast majority of jobs do not require you to hike very fast up a mountain following your professor who is literally a mountain goat, and students shouldn't feel shitty about not being able to work at that pace. I loved the learning part of field camp, but at my first one, the intense pressure caused a major relapse in my eating disorder.

Now that I'm on the teaching side of things, I've been trying to emphasize that you can be a great geologic mapper and do fieldwork even if you're not a mountain goat. And also that if you aren't a great geologic mapper and hate fieldwork that field camp shouldn't ruin your outlook on your skills and knowledge or your self-esteem. There's room for everyone to succeed in geoscience and I wish that undergraduate degrees emphasized that more.

I hope Dan and Phil know just how important the Terrible Influence Tour is to us gays in the south. I have never seen so many queer people in one place. I have never felt acceptance like that before. Every person I met was just like me, or enthusiastic about who I was as a person. Being able to emotionally connect with other queer people on such a mass scale, especially when you come from a rural and homophobic place, means the world!

Demon twins? Demon twins. 

Damian? Good at the assassin side of things, at least for a four year old, but Danyal? He’s okay, but he’s far better at things like poisons and bookkeeping. Which is honestly? Okay. They’re the League of Shadows, and sure a majority of the members are assassins, but it’s definitely not all there are. So? Danyal starts getting medical training. 

Not to say that either of the boys don’t know their fair share of violence and healing- it’s just better to let them play to their strengths. One doesn’t keep a league over centuries if they just have one type of warrior, or even just warriors. A variety is needed. 

So one gets trained more towards the business side of things. Damian may be better at wielding the weapons and killing- even if neither have had their first kill quite yet- but Danyal shows far more proficiency at acting, at masking who he is and gathering information. 

Damian, when he’s first sent to their Father, doesn’t mention his twin. Not because he’s jealous or hates him or anything like that. You just don’t talk about someone in an undercover mission in the League, and it’s not something he realizes isn’t a rule everywhere. 

Needless to say, the Bats have more than a mild freakout the first time Damian mentions a twin who will be coming to the manor now that his mission is over.

4. Children of the Machine — CG5, Dagames

Follow me, we are children of the machine (We've built this machine!) Barely human in a city built on broken dreams

Ohhh I'm so so so excited to finally share my thoughts about this song!! I've been drawing and redrawing scenes and images I associate with Children of the Machine for... well over a year now, because some of these (the last one, especially) are images I had actually planned to post for last year's Spotify wrapped. The more the story developed over the past year, the more I imagined, and I think I'm finally really happy with my portrayal of these events from Xisuma and Doc's perspectives.

I always imagined this song as the opener to dbhc!Xisuma's Season 9 arc, but it’s also a great follow-up to Don’t Let It Reach the Heart, since it gives us a little more context about Xisuma’s state of mind going into a new season (given everything that happened in Season 8) and throughout the events of Destruction. I also loved the idea that the voice who sings the second verse and the bridge belongs to Doc, reflecting on Xisuma's struggles from the secondhand perspective of someone who is still slowly, painfully putting the pieces together.
