Full disclosure, I've only been reading danmei since May. Also, I only read official translations. Others may be able to give a wider range.

But since you asked so nicely, let's go!

1) Yuwu/Remnants of Filth

Obviously, my number 1 is going to be the danmei I spend 80% of my time here trying to convince people to read.

Yuwu is a gift for fans of angst, literally opens with the MC getting stabbed in the heart and Meatbun doesn't let up from there.

Fun fact - the only Meatbun without non-con elements in the primary ship.

Sad fact - it also lacks her usual comedy.

Why I love it: Mo Xi, my princess, genuinely the saddest boy in all of danmei. I'm ridiculously invested in Ximang's quest for happiness.

2) 2ha/Erha/The Husky and his White Cat Shizun

At it's heart (at least to where the official translations are up to) 2ha is a romantic comedy. Tropes you may have found in other danmei hit so good (ghost weddings and shizun fucking).

Fun fact - Has my favourite confession scene out of all danmei I've read.

Sad fact - Being Meatbun's most popular work, you can basically collect spoilers like pokemon cards. Not even ao3 tags are safe.

Why I love it - Meatbun's smut writing is S tier and Mo Ran is one of my favourite protaganists... although he has some competition.

3) Ballad of Sword and Wine

I feel like I need to formally apologise for sleeping on this series after reading the first volume. It’s so, so juicy! Obsessed with the character dynamics and it’s always a winner when the main couple starts to dabble with each other in the first volume. It’s not Meatbun levels of smut peddling but I appreciate Tang Jiu Qing’s hustle. If you love courtly politics, graphic descriptions of violence and the most insane levels of sexual tension you will ever read. You need this danmei in your life.

Fun fact - I am as obsessed with Cezhou as Xiao Chiye is with the nape of Shen Lanzhou’s neck.

Sad fact - The sheer amount of characters will drive you insane.

4) To Rule in a Turbulent World

Enter You Miao! His introduction made me fall in love with him just as fast as I did Mo Ran! There's a reason everyone raves about chapter 3. Hilarious, horny and wholesome. The side characters are amazing, the main couple is adorable and it's giving hints of political powerplays. Also the first danmei I've read that seems to really deliver when it comes to skinship. The main couple literally can't keep their hands to themselves.

Fun fact - I'm only 50% through but I am buying every single Fei Tian Ye Xiang 7 seas is about to release day 1.

Sad fact - there's no pictures. Also I'm not sure how angsty it's going to get.

Bonus: For the toxic yaoi fan in your life

Meatbun's most unhinged work. She's peddling all the toxic smut fans of bl mangas and manhwas will be familiar with. Even though it's modern it made me nostalgic for that reason. He Yu is a clown and I adore him. Meatbun is airing all her kinks with this one and I'm not mad about it.

Fun fact- This is the first modern danmei I've read. Also, one of the more fun uses of the straight man trope I've read.

Sad fact - Vol 3 cliffhanger!

Why I love it - It's just pure Meatbun chaos.

Dipper

◇ First of all this boy is absolutely autistic. My little autistic ass acted so much like him as a kid, I mean, what autistic 12 year old wouldn't base their entire summer around a weird book full of monsters they found?

◇ I think he's a trans dude and aro/ace, and that his crush on Wendy was more comphet than anything. I'm not really a fan of any ship involving him but I think platonic dipcifica could be cute.

◇ Cryptozoology/The Paranormal is absolutely his main special interest, but he also has an sp/in in computers/comp sci (but he's honestly not great at computer stuff).

Mabel

◇ AuDHD Queen! I think her main special interest is absolutely arts / crafts, I mean look at all the silly things she makes throughout the series as well as her dedication to handmaking dozens of puppets/props/etc as well as writing and entire play to impress her crush of the week in Sock Opera. ◇ I think sexuality wise she's not straight but prefers to be unlabelled. I also like to think she's the type to collect xenogenders / neopronouns like pokemon cards. ( she totally uses a bunch of cat-based pronouns) ◇ Shortly after the series I think she'd get a little less Boys-Crazy and focus more exploring who she is as a person / her self expression. Absolutely is gonna have a mall goth/emo/scene phase (she's smushing all three of those together into one thing for herself).

(I also think Mabel and Dipper were born identical twins)

Grunkle Stan

◇ Also AuDHD, not quite sure what his big main special interest would be but he's absolutely hyperfixated on Ducktective. Also going off the story in Lost Legends I think he'd absolutely be getting into making comics / drawing in general (even if hes not great at it). Post series I think he'd spend a lot of his free time out at sea drawing in the boat's cabin. Mostly making comics of silly re-tellings of he and Ford's adventures out at Sea (he absolutely shows Dipper and Mabel these if he and Ford video calls them when they're on land) ◇ I'm a transfem Stanley truther. He doesn't really realize/come to terms with it until post-series. I think she'd just grow out her hair and throw it in a pony-tail + use she/he pronouns to transition. She'd still use the name Stanley and be fine with both masc/fem terms (ie fine be called a man or a woman). Also he's bisexual (but has known this since he was like a teen, even if he didn't have the words to label it.) ◇ I think his Popsicle addiction from the unaired pilot is real and canon. Old autistic men love popsicles just look at my dad and grandfather.

Ford

◇ oh boy its projection time (i am a stanford pines fictive) 😈😈😈

◇ Transmasc, somewhere under the nonbinary umbrella but very guy adjacent. Mainly uses he/him pronouns but I think he'd use "it" and "they" aswell. Gay and Arospec as well. ◇ Autism + NPD + Schizophrenia wombo combo. He's sooooo NPD coded its INSANE, I am going to write an essay about it in the future. Goes without saying that his special interests are the paranormal and various sciences, but I think he has a hardcore love for the arts as well. ◇ Going off both the autism and arospec HC- I think he's the type to convince himself he has a crush very easily, when in reality he just has a strong admiration / platonic love for those in question, and had strong platonic feelings for McGucket back in college that he confused for romantic ones (projecting 100000000%) (i think the Stan twins were fraternal twins)

MORE dumb cp9 headcannons because I needed to store everything somewhere (part 2??)

Jabra is that guy in olive garden who see how long the waiter will grate cheese for

Growing up, Lucci was the one who took care of Kalifa and Kaku, plus he was crazy overprotective over them

Kaku was the final member who had never tried smelling salts but once he did he sniffed it really close and couldn't breathe properly for like- 2 weeks

Blueno and Lucci makes little figurines of the cp9 members

Jabra once punched Spandam in the crotch as hard as he could because intrusive thoughts (he claimed it was a fly)

Kalifa and Kaku are the Bill Nye of the crew

Kumadori went through multiple emo phases

Fukurou and Jabra teach Lucci brainrot words

Kumadori was the "Santa" of the crew when they were still kids (Lucci never fell for it)

Besides Spandam, Kalifa and Kaku are the shortest members

since they were all band kids, they come together every once a while and learn a song to play together, like an orchestra but really tiny

Kumadori and Kaku have severe arachnophobia

They play uno every Friday night (along with Monopoly) and no matter what, they always end is a 1v1 battle to the death because someone placed a plus 4 on Jabra or Fukurou

Kalifa could set water on fire if you left her alone in the kitchen

the entire crew (besides Lucci) wanted to get a dog but stupid SPANDAM fed a fruit to a sword and said they didn't need a dog anymore (he got a crazy beating [even from Lucci] but funkfreed was equally as good anyways)

Lucci would NEVER admit it but he has mild separation anxiety when he's away from any of the crew and is always around them for safety (except Spandam)

When Fukurou found out about THOSE ships (ahem) he immediately told everyone all the pairings of them at the dinner table and Kalifa even threw up

Lucci takes his trombone every once in a while and blasts it as loud as he can Infront of Jabra or Spandam's door at 2AM

Kaku has the BIGGEST Pokemon card collection you have EVER seen (40% of them are girafarig cards anyways)

Friday is always game night

When playing ssbu, Lucci plays as incineroar, Kaku as game n' watch (or Luigi), Kalifa as zero suit Samus, Blueno as villager, Jabra as wolf (and daisy), Fukurou as pac man, and Kumadori as kirby

Lucci really likes the olive garden bread sticks

Kaku cooks spaghetti a crazy amount - like 4 times a week (Blueno knows Kaku doesn't like spaghetti himself so he makes him whatever Kaku wants while the rest just eat his spaghetti because they LOVE it)

Kalifa is a HUGE Splatoon fan

Jabra has a fursona

Blueno has the lowest spice tolerance

Kaku and Lucci play Lego and build ship models in secret

Whenever they get a hotel, it doesn’t matter how small it is they WILL all sleep in the same room

Kaku is actually the heaviest drinker when it comes to alcohol or beer, but he hates the taste so he sticks with juice (kalifa and Lucci are tied for second)

Jabra will never admit he's TERRIFIED of horror movies

when they walk into Kumadori's room they're hit with is the strongest smell of gingerbread candles in the middle of august

Kaku has never eaten any Mexican food

Literally all of cp9 has this weird thing where they randomly just start holding back tears and barge into one of their rooms to cry about how much they love them (it's become a meeting at this point whenever this happens they call code crew and they all just go to the same room to hang out until the person feels better)

Fukurou and Jabra still have to count with their fingers

They've all known each other since they were mere kids

Jabra often tries to get Hattori to like him more than Lucci but fails miserably every time

Kalifa shops at hot topic

Kumadori is the instagram influencer who takes pictures of his food

Lucci's den den has countless pictures of the crew, even some really dumb ones

Kaku is the only one who can breakdance and has a ddr machine in the game room

Kalifa, Kaku, and Spandam love playing with Jabra and Kumadori's hair

Blueno has an addiction to coffee (it's the only thing that keeps him awake)

Jabra drinks milk from the carton and the whole crew thinks that's gross AF so Blueno has to buy multiple extra cartons, exclusively for Jabra cause he's gross

They're all close enough to share spit without complaining or anything like- they drink from the same cup, they just eat eachother's food like it's their own and even share gum if they're desperate

Blueno teaches Jabra how to shake drinks so he can impress the ladies

Lucci makes Spandam call him by his full name because he isn't "cp9" close

Kaku uses Jabra as a verb when describing something really stupid

Kalifa, Lucci, Kaku, Jabra, and blueno all know Morse code and it looks really stupid when Lucci and Jabra are arguing through Morse code

With every new BFDIA/TPOT episode the TB/GB polyamory grows.

First it was just them, then Fries in Team No-Name, Bomby and Nickel in BFDIA 14, 8Ball with whatever he and Golfy had in BFB, Blocky just because he was on their team in BFB presplit, BasketBall and SnowBall simply because they’re just balls, Puff Ball, Eraser and Pen in late AYO, and Robot Flower before she turned asshole in TPOT.

These two balls are collecting partners like they’re Pokemon cards and I love them for that <3

On Saturday, I visited the bigger mall for the first time in a minute. Barnes and Noble had season seven on DVD ready to go. Physical media is slowly dying, but I guess huge franchises still get releases.

Rick and Morty merchandise tends to congregate around the trinkets and accessories. I wandered to the game section and found...playing cards! I'm still waiting for Adult Swim to sign off on licensed tarot cards. Other franchises have, including Marvel.

The toy store had a different game: Monopoly! Explore the world of seasons one and two.

The first couple of seasons are basically their own isolated little world that produced 90% of the general public's perception of the show (aside from Pickle Rick.) It's 2024, but everyone still thinks the entire series is about gloopies and shleemies and Rick turning himself into a pickle, then saying "wubba lubba dub dub" and doing a little dance afterward.

For the record, that's not a bad thing--it's the same for most entertainers and franchises. Their peak/early years create their enduring public images.

Speaking of seasons two and three, the same store had these pins:

Rick and Morty falling out of an overturned ship...that's a new one.

Onto a clothing store, which had a new set of boxer shorts. Why do undergarments always get the best designs? Nobody sees them but you!

Spencer's had the Rick and Morty cubes neatly lined up on a shelf. They're not sure how to feel about it.

I don't drink alcohol (I'm not against it, I just hate the taste), but I love this Pickle Rick shot glass. He emerges from the jar to tell you what's what! 🖕

New blankets! I enjoy seeing their awkward hug everywhere.

Today, I visited the smaller mall. One of the "nerdy" stores had a few Funko Pops scattered around. A Funko knock-off in a sea of collectibles, Dorbz Beth smiles from the top of the heap.

They also had TWO Mad Max Summers. Her "normal" counterpart stood nearby, but she was engrossed in her phone.

Another season seven DVD, this time with anti-theft packaging.

Spencer's had new ear gauges. Zap!

I usually stop by the other "nerdy" store before I leave. Today, they had exciting merchandise that I'd never seen before: a giant diorama.

I love finding unique merchandise beyond the usual Funko Pops and boxer shorts. It's like spotting a rare Pokemon. I don't physically collect merchandise because I don't want to spend the money--instead, I collect it mentally, which is just as good!

It’s about Vhas and his go with the flow attitude. Can’t get lost if you don’t know where you’re going. It’s about the fact that he would save a total stranger for the greater good.

It’s about how the only thing Kyana knows is running away. She just goes from place to place and hates being tied down. It’s about how how she has been constantly searching and learning and is never satisfied

It’s about the fact that in the intro, Sophia says that our crew is not the stuff of legends yet. The crew of the Per Aspera has defeated dragons and broken into and out of impenetrable prisons and have learned unknowable spells and killed the lich queen Vlakkith and are the chosen heroes of several gods. But in the minds of our heroes, they are just a few people with a spelljammer and some really persistent enemies.

And I love this podcast so much. These are my blorbos. My weird little dudes.
