Stormlight Archive x Pokémon crossover (Part 1)

I picked each character's pokemon team by drawing inspiration from several things: spren, companions, personality, occupation, abilities/powers, story events, and last but not least... vibes.

For the character art I wanted something cohesive both art and size-wise (Tumblr crop feature I hate you), so I went with the colored renders of the Stormlight minis created by Brotherwise Games, (Kaladin and two others didn't have their logos but the rest will).

This is part 1 of 12. All posts of the series are finished, but I'll probably do weekly updates to avoid spamming the general tags too much, so make sure to check the tag #Stormlight x Pokemon for any future updates.

The reasons why I chose these pokemon are under the Readmore. Beware spoilers!

Swablu was the pokemon that best reminded me of Sylphrena. The blue color is similar to hers, and the cloud wings evoke windsprens (yes, I know that she's an honorspren) and the Windrunner order, and Swablu's cute design matched Sylphrena's childish nature better than the regal Altaria or Dragonair. I still included Dragonair because it also matched Kaladin, but I felt Swablu was a better spren representation.

As for Lucario, as well as Absol... those are vibes based, except the vibes are that I believe Kaladin would detest that they reminded people of him... which was why I had to choose them.

Timburr and the wooden beam it's holding I thought worked as a representation of his time in Bridge Four. I went back and forth a lot on whether to choose Timburr or Gurdurr (who is carrying a steal beam above its head). None were a perfect fit, but in the end I went with Timburr because another character will have Conkeldurr in their team, and I wanted to distance them a bit.

Togetic, besides being associated with healing, has wings (easy to associate with Windrunners) and is lanky, which I why I picked it for Kaladin "tall even by Alethi standards" Stormblessed.

i am not too active on social media but since i played persona 5 royal (i had played base game but didnt get royal until a few months ago) the worms have not left my brain. so here are pokemon teams i came up with for each of the royal trio (i may do the rest of the phantom thieves later if im feeling up to it). akiren:

(i added in togetic because of its association to good luck! its to reference how sumire kept a good luck charm before each of her performances. pretty proud of that one LOL. i like to think she gets lilligant when she fully awakens her persona but idk yet) i wanted each person to have a main "specialty" with the exception of akiren and akechi who are multi specialist to reference the fact that they are wild cards. however, akechi leans more into using dark and steel types (when you initially meet him, he only has decidueye, gallade, and palafin all heroic looking pokemon, everyone else comes after/during his black mask reveal). sumire of course would be mainly fairy type. however i didnt really want to restrict myself down to that so i just chose whatever fit them LOL. its just a neat little hc i wanted to have for myself which didnt work unfortunately.

Recently I discovered this Pokemon trainer maker and, golly, I think I indirectly unlocked a deeper understanding of some beloved characters' personality

Abouts the Pokemon teams choice under the cut (beware of dumdum jokes that drag on by theirself)

Helga Sinclair: Metagross (YEAAGH YEAAAAHGHHHH), Aggron, Magneton, Skarmory, Steelix, Lucario. Steel type driven team because me thinks they perfectly blend with Helga's Aesthetic. They are big, intimidating, mejestic and cool. (hoho, cool...because.. metal hohoh sorry) She would absolutely be a Metagross and Lucario person. Also steel types are my faves👉👈.

John Silver: Ursaring (hehe because he. He-), Ditto (Jelly pinkish pokmn...jelly bubble gum space parrot...), Slowking (Kings must dwell with kings...hah!), Walrein, Munna, Klinklang.

Sarah Hawkins: Blissey, Ambipom, Unfezant, Medicham, Psyduck (Pokemon and trainer would bond in shared drained mental states at times), Blaziken. Given her team being majorly composed of humanoid pokemon they would be great helpers at the Inn!

Captain Amelia: Espeon, Lunatone, Deoxis (BECAUSE SHE -- Captain Frigging Amelia -- is OP), Delcatty, Liepard, Golett. Mr Arrow: Gigalith, Minior, Unown, Golem, Bronzong, Glameow. With Amelia and Arrow's close relationship, I really like to imagine that one day, the two chosed to trade pokemon in sign of ultimate lasting friendship. Resulting for both teams gaining a single "out of place" motif. (I'm very normal about this I swear)

Dr Facilier: Haunter, Mismagius, Absol, Claydol, Mr. Mime, Dusknoir. GHOST AND DARK TYPE GHOST AND DARK TYPE GHOST-- No one will be able to change my mind. Yes. He IS a Mr. Mime person.

William Cecil Clayton: Venusaur, Carnivine, Hippowdon, Zebstrika, Heracross, Shiftry. I think Clayton as a pokemon trainer would be a pain in the neck at each encounter. Jabbering and pontificate about stealing and selling your pokemon at the best bidder-- *Geting electrocuted, hydro pumped, fire blasted each time Team Rocket Style*

Jane Porter: Infernape, Swablu, Sunflora, Ludicolo, Sudowoodo, Victreebel. It's Sudowoodo and Ludicolo slander in this house. Infernape is the one responsible for sending Clayton scorched and airborne at the end of each pokemon fight.

Commander Rourke: Machamp, Conkeldurr, Toxicroak, Rhyhorn, Tyranitar, Blastoise. Mix and fight types for the menacing man. Just like Helga he absolutely would possess a pseudo-legendary pokemon. In his case, Tyranitar.

Alameda Slim: Chatot Colourful parrot with musical note shaped head? Absolutely Alameda core, Bouffalant ("JUUUUNIOOOOOOOR!!!!"), Tauros, Miltank, Dugtrio, Rapidash.

Bill Sykes: Houndoom (TWO!!!1!!1!!!11!), Sableye, Hitmonlee, Electabuzz (Allusions to his close encounters with high voltage) , Sharpedo (Because ...he..loan shark)

NONO I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND. I love Aimilios so much and feel second-hand guilt whenever I draw Dusknoir/Ribbons without him. He’s always rotating in the ol’ noggin. I love him and Ribbons equally and. I really wanna get into what happens with him as Lucario just as much as I do the whole Darkrai/Ribbons fiasco. (Which is the culprit for my art slowing beside artfight) cause I’m just thinking about him so much AUGH—

Karen got the fairy type because fairy types are mostly known for being quiet, calm, collected, but also very hard hitting, which I feel like resembles Karen quite well

Oliver got ghost because of the spooky mansion !! At the end of his good route he talks about how the cinema was indeed haunted by ghosts, but he managed to befriend some of them. This was actually suggested by a different tumblr ask, since we originally wanted to give Oliver the electric type :]

Randy got poison, since poison types usually live in conditions that are deemed "poor" by humans, but they're infact optimal for them. That's kinda how they found Randy actually. Bro is also probably a walking hazard so it only makes sense. Not to mention the kind of poison type pokemon that exist that just...scream Randy Jade (eg garbodor, who's actually his strongest guy)

Gabby got electric since she works at a phone shop and her job is to fix phones, printers, typewriters, all that good stuff. Since she fixes items that require electricity we thought electric type was the most fitting. Even if electricity isn't always needed when repairing things, pokemon such as magnemite, magneton and rotom can be useful regardless as shown in the games

Jerry got normal since he is probably the most casual citizen in dialtown. He's just livin his life, got nothing too special going on, he's just a regular guy

Norm got fighting and I feel like it's kinda self explanatory why. Fighting types are known for being angry and aggressive, but also reasonable and kind once they get used to their trainers. Some fighting type pokemon are also known for wanting justice and they fight for whatever they feel is right (eg lucario). Sounds kinda like Norm imo

Mingus got dark because she's a corrupt mayor, but also because the dark type has the most cats. Majority of dark type pokemon are sassy and they all give off this weird mingus energy I can't put into words.

Callum got steel because he works with metal. His arms, legs and his head are made out of metal. There's pokemon that shed pieces of metal when they evolve (aron) so he doesn't only use his pokemon in battle, but also in his workshop, kinda like Gabby. I can't explain it any better sobw

Bunny got ice since he's "cold as ice" iykwim. Tried to give him as many passive aggressive pokemon as possible (and this includes alolan ninetales somehow)

Gingi doesn't have a specific type since it probably ate the gym leader guide book it got from the higher ups. It also doesn't keep it's pokemon in pokeballs since 1. no money 2. the concept of big ass creechurs being trapped in tiny balls terrify it and it doesn't want its pokemon to be "put in ball prison". Gingi also resembles the player in this au thing

Abel got fire since fire does resemble anger, but also power. Abel owns a whole ass funfair and is also part of the minglings !! Bro got plenty of power !! He is also angry at Gingi for wasting his time, bothering his employees and pissing on one of his attractions I totally didn't forget what it was but I remember it happening !! We tried giving him all the passive aggressive fire type pokemon we could find in the dex (he's also matching w his boywife bc love wins)

Mr. Dickens got psychic since psychic types are known for being the wise, knowledgable pokemon. Like fairy types, they're also calm, quiet and collected, but they got a lil touch of wisdom in there. They also represent the power of the intellect, which is pretty mr. dickenscore if I say so myself.

Theoroar got the dragon type, since theo doesn't actually give a damn about building a bond or relating to his pokemon. He wants the rarest, most powerful pokemon under his grasp and dragon types just so happen to fit in both of those categories. His logic is that his pokemon work for him and whatever gets him to the top he will use it

Hobo got all the gods. Dialga, the god of time, Palkia, the goddess of space, Xerneas, the goddess of life, Yvetal the god of death and Arceus the creator of it all and the being above everything. He probably has Groudon and Kyogre in his pc, since they're the god of land and the sea respectively. He got herdier for good measure, it's kinda like Red's pikachu in the johto games.

Tango and Billy are both rocket executives so they don't have a specific type they specialize in, but Billy has a more offensive team no pun intended, while Tango has a more defensive one

Shooty and Stabby well....they obv don't have a type they specialize in since they're pretty much just rocket grunts. Their goal is to become executives one day

in honor of my pokémon obsession and vague desire to one day write a pokémon au, here are the pokémon teams i think some of the bllk boys would have!!

warning: all pokémon are from gen 6 or before because i didn’t really play the games after that, i chose pokémon based on aesthetics and vibes not functionality in battle or stats or anything like that HAHA, this truly is not that serious but if anyone steals my ideas i will be mad 😐 don’t plagiarize pls it’s not cool

characters: isagi yoichi, chigiri hyoma, barou shouei, nagi seishiro, mikage reo, otoya eita, karasu tabito, yukimiya kenyu, hiori yo

isagi yoichi: charizard, lapras, stoutland, machamp, leafeon, raichu (this man is basic i’m sorry but he’s not going crazy or picking any atypical pokémon)

chigiri hyoma: rapidash, zebstrika, dragonite, gorebyss, liepard, pyroar (only chooses fast pokémon and likes to ride them around so he gets places before everyone else)

barou shouei: pangoro, krookodile, zoroark, sharpedo, houndoom, weavile (exclusively dark types so he can continue w the whole villain thing he has going on)

nagi seishiro: goodra, reuniclus, clefable, whimsicott, snorlax, arcanine (what can i say?? a bunch of squishy cuddly pokémon for a squishy cuddly guy)

mikage reo: gallade, mawile, flygon, persian, cinccino, florges (idk all of these pokémon just feel very elegant and classy to me which is super mikage “rich boy” reo)

otoya eita: greninja, sylveon, ampharos, blissey, altaria, ninetales (he tries to be cool so he picks greninja to start with but he ends up with exclusively cutesy pokémon for the rest of his team because he’s actually a loser)

karasu tabito: garchomp, honchkrow, staraptor, talonflame, pidgeot, lucario (his commitment to the bird aesthetic is impressive, but he feels a kinship with garchomp — perhaps due to their similarly shaped side profiles?? — and thinks lucario is cool, so those two get a pass)

yukimiya kenyu: breloom, alakazam, steelix, manectric, azumarill, noivern (i think he would only pick pokémon that make him seem refined and cool)

hiori yo: kingdra, metagross, nidoqueen, luxray, aurorus, swanna (a relatively balanced team in terms of typing, but to be honest i picked them because they’re all light blue/have light blue on them)

No Legends ZA news yet so I chose to pass the time by designing a Volo clone. More info about him under the cut.

Assuming ZA takes place in the past like Arceus did, William is Diantha’s ancestor, and he was the first Trainer to discover a Key Stone and Mega Evolve his Lucario. He also found a Zygarde core, and when the player first meets him he’s looking for Cells across Kalos. This version of ZA takes place a few years after the ultimate weapon was fired, when the survivors are working on rebuilding Kalos. William tricks the player into finding Xerneas for him, which he uses to punish AZ for firing the weapon by cursing him with eternal life. After his true nature is revealed, it’s a race between him and the player to find Yveltal. William intends to use Yveltal’s power to destroy AZ’s Floette for good. The player intervenes just in time and they battle. When the player wins, William uses the cells he’s collected over the course of the game to turn his core into Zygarde’s Complete Form. When the player defeats Zygarde, the cells dissipate and the Core flies away, which greatly upsets William. He realizes the pain of losing a deeply-loved Pokemon and abandons his plan.

His team consists of a lv66 Florges with Flower Veil, a lv67 Aurorus with Refrigerate, a lv67 Tyrantrum with Rock Head, a lv68 Gourgeist Super with Insomnia, a lv68 Dragalge with Poison Touch, and a lv70 Lucario with Inner Focus and a Lucarionite. The player’s first battle with him is against a lv5 Flabebe, and about 1/4 of the way through the game he upgrades his team to a lv20 Amaura and lv25 Floette.

First starter: have both Charmander and Turtwig because I chose Charmander on someone elses game before i got my own pokemon game.

Pokemon from fav region: love gen 5 and had to draw one of my favs

Favorite shiny: I love the fluffy moth and when i found out its shiny was yellow i just had to get one. 

Shiny you wish was better: Iv’e seen others draw Leafeon with a more autumn color scheme or a sakura tree it really make me wish the shiny was like that instead of looking almost exactly the same.

Randomly generated pokemon: Cufant ^v^

Draw and legendary/mythical: I like a good bit of legends Reshiram is the one I always think of. Raiko, Lugia, Shaymin being other favs.

A pokemon of your fav type: I like both fighting and grass so I picked Breloom.

Very first favorite: tried to remember who it was before Sawk and all i could think of was Lucario for all the memories i had with it and Luxray (i remember looking in my PC on either Diamond or Platinum and there was like 4 Luxrays in the same box)

Current fav: Sawk has been a old Fav. little me saw how silly and cool Stephan’s Sawk was so i caught myself one, eventually i started drawing em which at the time I hated drawing anything human like because i sucked at it, so in a way he got me out of my comfort zone and really pushed me to get better at drawing bipedal characters.

Build a pokemon team for your ocs

Jumping on from @thanataes, because I thought this was such a fun idea! I may have gotten a little carried away, but I really like pokemon :) it's really fun to look at what suits their aesthetic, their fighting style, their personality, etc, while trying to create a balanced and workable team.

Ucalegon, Nod's most beloved warrior.

Ucalegon is someone fairly concerned with aesthetics, but also as a fighter for Nod has to have a fairly balanced team. She often uses eletricity to taze and shock people, but also lives in a fairly urbanised area, hence the eletric and steel types. There is a certain level of mystique to her, which Absol represents, while also being considered wild and uncivilised by the Bronze Eden populace, which Lycanroc shows. Tauros acts as a good balance for the rest of the team's speciality, while also showing how full-on she can sometimes be.

Hendrix, leader of the Undark.

Hendrix's team are all visually related to water creatures, although only two are actual water types. While he is heavily involved in the pirate aesthetic, he is not actually one, so I thought it would be fun to show that by only visually looking like sea creatures, while not being one. I chose two poison types, because he is mildly radioactive. Most ground attacks are physical, which suits his physical and aggressive nature, hence my choosing of those. Barbaracle was chosen because Hendrix does have barnacles in different places on his body, so it just makes sense. Garchomp, I can't really explain, it just feels right to have at least on dragon type on there. There's a certain status symbol thing with dragon types, and he is a leader of sorts, so it fits in!

Vítor Cadogan, former Gladiator of Golden Glimpse.

Vítor was quite fun to do. Aside from Mimikyu, I tried not to choose too many recent pokemon, to show he's a little older than maybe you'd first expect. Once being a superhero for Golden Glimpse, I tried to make his team more varied, to have more options in a fight. Lucario evolves with high friendship, so it's nice to have that sort of implication that Vítor treats his pokemon very well. Jolteon is honestly mostly chosen because Golden Glimpse is visually very yellow, and it's cute to imagine one curling up in his lap. Porygon2 is because it requires a lot of trading to evolve, and Vítor is someone very well connected. His protective instincts are symbolised via Aegislash, and his secretive nature while also being very socialble feel well represented by Mimikyu.

Dr Edgar Edwards, former heavyweight champion of Bronze Eden.

As his title suggests, Ed was once a highly successful boxer in Bronze Eden, winning the heavyweight championship 3 times in his career. This is why Hariyama and Machamp are there! Steelix and Weezing I chose due to his rags to riches story, which both represent to me with the sleek steel form and the pollution tophats. Houndoom feels like they fit in very well as a guard dog, which in a way Ed is one himself. Venusaur just felt right to add there. Very large, poisonous, and Ed is a war criminal who is not far off 8 feet tall, so it just feels good!

Diomede, exiled leader of the Vagor.

Diomede is a horse girl, so Mudsdale was an obvious choice. His actual steed though is an elk, which Sawsbuck sort of emulates, so I went with them too. Crobat was fun to add because of the whole "cannot evolve without high friendship", while also being scary-looking, which hints at how much he loved his people when he was part of them, but doesn't necessarily show it. Golurk, being inspired by a golem, also shows that latent protective instinct he had. Being a ghost type also feels like it shows those are just memories now, which i like. Bisharp was chosen as Diomede is a weaponsmith like most Vagor, and Bisharp looks like it would help out! Bouffalant works well as being a Vagor is also about working in tandem with the wilderness and with the untameable megafauna that roam Nod, which Bouffalant is clearly inspired by.

Saccade, Punisher of Neo-Babylon

For Saccade, it was important almost every pokemon felt recognisable as an animal. Saccade is quite a down-to-earth, no nonsense person, so these choices sort of infer that with their recognisable designs. Two are normal type, further cementing that she isn't someone majorly into the flashy looks of other pokemon. The exception to this is Noivern, who I'd imagine she rarely deploys as a sort of "suprise tool that will help us later". Mabosstiff, some of you might have noticed, is a shiny! I imagine Mabosstiff as a gift from her spouse when they were still alive, who Saccade rarely brings out in a fight either, for fear of losing them. Durant was chosen frankly just because I really like durant! Gallade, because in between these two pokemon she's hesitant to bring out, I think she needs a more aggressive partner to compensate. This team was also very fun to put together!

i need to yap this out bc its actually overtaken my brain so yesterday, i thought of a wind breaker pokemon au more specifically, what pokemon they would have and/or how they would meet them bc this is very important to me before i make the au real if i dont got anything for that, then ill just explain the reason why i chose it to be on sakuras team STARTING WITH SAKURA!! truth be told some of the pokemon MIGHT be changed as I continue to think but this is what ive got for now

ABSOL - Sakura's partner pokemon. So, first things first, its Pokedex entry is perfect for Sakura. It met Sakura as a child, saving him from something (maybe a disaster, maybe from other kids bullying him). However, this only fueled bad rumors causing the old townspeople to stay away from them. Acts a lot like Sakura's protector, despite him saying he doesn't need protection. TOGETIC - A couple days or a week before Sakura leaves for Makochi, it bumped into him, injured and scared. He beat up the bastards chasing it and Togetic was grateful. Sensing Sakura's pure heart (again, Pokedex entry is perfection), it softly bonked its head onto one of Sakura's stray pokeballs to be caught, shocking the other. It doesn't appear until the start of episode 3, after Sakura and Sugishita shake hands. The class gets surprised when it appears, happily chirping at its trainer, and it's Suo who points out that it's a shiny Togetic. Which shocks everyone, Sakura included because he didn't know it was a shiny. Because of that, Sakura's mean and aloof image is thrown out the window LMAO RIOLU - An episode four catch, right before they leave to fight Shishitoren. It saw Sakura fight in ep 1 and was mesmerized, following the other all the time. This makes Nirei mistake it as Sakura's pokemon when he meets the other, who was very much confused then surprised when he sees the pokemon. It's a very cheerful and easily excitable pokemon in contrast to its trainer, admires Umemiya's Lucario A LOT. If you've seen Pokemon Horizons, it's basically Fuecoco and Charizard. MIMIKYU - ok we're now starting on the ones i dont have exact lore for. I chose this because, pokedex entry. I think Sakura would meet it bc of his haunted ass apartment, its there all alone and he doesn't bother it and it doesn't bother him during those first few days, the silence of company calms them. One day, it asks Sakura to catch it or it follows him outside to school. LITTEN - I feel like how it meets Sakura will be like the SM anime, or maybe Umemiya finds it on the rooftop about to eat one of his crops and introduces it to the gang like 'Do any of you want to take care of this adorable Litten? It doesn't like me unfortunately'. It warms up to Sakura VERY QUICKLY (it senses kin), so that's the end of that discussion. Also because I needed a cat to be in Sakura's team. UMBREON - This one is a much, MUCH more later catch. I don't know how much later but definitely past where the manga is currently at right now because I do not think Sakura will have a full team where we're at rn. Caught as an Eevee, its a very calm pokemon that loves being a little shit to Absol. And that's what I've got for now! the ones most subject to change are the latter half of the team, but the first three are there to stay An honorable mention to this team is Victini, because V is for victory! but I feel like I can make a scenario that fits for victini and sakura to meet and not have victini captured bc its a mythical WAHAHAHA i will definitely make this au into a fanfic after the uhhh 5-7 fic ideas that i need to finish first

this is not a team i've played as, actually. i chose this team based on the pokemon i relate to/see myself as now (lucario) and my very first pokemon in pearl (my first game ever!!)

pokemon as a whole, with mystery dungeon in particular, has been a really important series to me for about 15 years. i wanted to try my best to encapsulate that feeling for the final day :-)

Raincode Pokemon headcannons

Although I’d never thought I would return to writing for this fandom, I can’t say I didn’t enjoy writing this.

This is something that has been done for many fandoms, including Raincode, despite the smaller fanbase. It’s been a while since I had written anything for this game, but reading Raincode NG+ by MHJoker4Ever, which had recently been continued after a hiatus, quickly got me inspired. Their fic series expands on many minor characters and gives them more characterization, which you’ll see me adapting here. For each character, I have included a Pokedex entry that can best show why I chose those Pokemon for them. Some have an in character blurb showing how they coexist with their partner, and some others have a direct explanation from yours truly. Without further ado…

Nocturnal Detective Agency

A commonality amongst Halara’s Pokemon is their Fighting typing, and how they attack with kicks, much like themselves. Tsareena matches Halara’s disposition almost uncannily well, having become cold and merciless in order to protect itself, and draws a comparison between Halara and Fubuki, who is in possession of the more innocent and naive first form, Bounsweet. However, Halara still values justice and doesn’t tolerate wrongdoing, which was why Lucario found commonality with them and eventually pledged to stay by their side.

Desuhiko - Ditto, Zoroark

“When it spots an enemy, its body transfigures into an almost perfect copy of its opponent.” - Ditto Yellow Pokedex entry

“Each has the ability to fool a large group of people simultaneously. They protect their lair with illusory scenery.” - Zoroark White Pokedex entry

Sometimes, when extra hands are needed for an investigation, Ditto and Zoroark act as invaluable helpers for Desuhiko, also being able to disguise themselves. However, a limitation of their disguises that Desuhiko himself doesn’t have is their inability to mimic human speech. A person being strangely silent can be a giveaway to the superstar detective’s Pokemon mimicking someone.

Fubuki - Bounsweet, Gholdengo

“Because of its sweet, delicious aroma, bird Pokémon are always after it, but it's not intelligent enough to care.” - Bounsweet Ultra Sun Pokedex entry

“Its body seems to be made up of 1,000 coins. This Pokémon gets along well with others and is quick to make friends with anybody.” - Gholdengo Scarlet Pokedex entry

Bounsweet is immediately recognizable by the innocent and somewhat dimwitted smile on its face, which it maintains even in danger. It resembles its trainer more than the other detectives in the agency would like to admit, although they keep silent in order to spare Fubuki’s ego.

Gholdengo, on the other hand, was gifted to the young heiress by Mr. Clockford as her protection during her detective ventures. Its silly appearance and amiable personality belie a highly capable Pokemon in combat, much like the reality-bending time powers that Fubuki possesses by virtue of her bloodline, despite her childlike naivety.

Vivia - N/A

The near-death detective often looked like a pile of rotten food being swarmed by flies, only in this case, the flies were various Ghost type Pokemon lingering around him. With one foot already on the "other side", he couldn't blame these wayward souls for taking an interest in him, but as for claiming one of them for his own, Vivia did not have the energy. To him, a trainer's bond with their Pokemon was merely temporary, no matter how strong. However, he appreciated the Ghost types for not assaulting his every senses with wails and whispers of regrets, like the souls of humans did. He wanted nothing more than some peace and quiet, after all.

Yakou - Inteleon, Tandemaus

“It may present itself as being well-mannered, but deep down, it still has a lazy side. It will slack off when its Trainer isn’t looking.” - Inteleon Violet Pokedex entry

“The pair sticks together no matter what. They split any food they find exactly in half and then eat it together.” - Tandemaus Violet Pokedex entry

Although it is registered under Yakou’s name in present time, Tandemaus was not originally his; instead, it was his wife’s Pokemon, whom Yakou ended up taking in after her death. Sometimes, when he looks at it, bittersweet memories of his time with her rush back.

Inteleon was recruited by Yakou upon receiving orders to rendezvous with Master Detectives bound for Kanai Ward, but in truth, the Water type sniper was recruited to assist in brainstorming his revenge on Dr Huesca.

Chapter 0 Master Detectives

Zilch - Chandelure

“It absorbs a spirit, which it then burns. By waving the flames on its arms, it puts its foes into a hypnotic trance.” - Chandelure Black Pokedex entry

The old wives’ tales surrounding the Litwick line are embodied by this Chandelure, who acts as the assassin’s partner-in-crime and incinerates whatever - and whoever - its trainer commands it to. It especially loves to capture and burn the souls of its trainer’s targets to fuel its flame after a successful hit.

Melami - Hisuian Typhlosion

“Said to purify lost, forsaken souls with its flames and guide them to the afterlife. I believe its form has been influenced by the energy of the sacred mountain towering at Hisui's center.” - Hisuian Typhlosion Legends Arceus Pokedex entry

Having been with Melami since its formative years and exposed to her affinity with the realm of spirits, her Fire type partner grew up to have mastery over communing with wayward souls and seeing the life energies of those around it, much like its ancestors from an era of the past. Whenever Melami is channeling, Typhlosion keeps watch by her side to ensure that the soul is calm and does not lash out.

Aphex - Pangoro, Yungoos, Primeape

“Although it possesses a violent temperament, it won't put up with bullying. It uses the leaf in its mouth to sense the movements of its enemies.” - Pangoro X Pokedex entry

“It wanders around in a never-ending search for food. At dusk, it collapses from exhaustion and falls asleep on the spot.” - Yungoos Moon Pokedex entry

“It becomes wildly furious if it even senses someone looking at it. It chases anyone that meets its glare.” - Primeape Silver Pokedex entry

Despite his rough life, Aphex does not regret meeting his three partners. They protected him from the less savory residents of the slums he grew up in, and prove to be powerful comrades when he comes into scuffles with criminal brutes, but Aphex’s natural keenness for talking with his fists leads to him allowing his Pokemon to run wild and them going out of control at times.

Zange - Gumshoos, Annihilape

“Once it finds signs of prey, it will patiently stake out the location, waiting until the sun goes down.” - Gumshoos Scarlet Pokedex entry

“It imbues its fists with the power of the rage that it kept hidden in its heart. Opponents struck by these imbued fists will be shattered to their core.” - Annihilape Violet Pokedex entry

In contrast to the brash newbie Aphex, Zange has no tolerance for any lack of discipline, from the trainee detectives under him and from his Pokemon. Gumshoos commonly helps to stake out investigation suspects, and anyone who tries to flee from the veteran Master Detective rarely gets past Annihilape.

Aetheria Academy

Kurumi - Rowlet

“Flies noiselessly on delicate wings. It has mastered the art of deftly launching dagger-sharp feathers from those same wings.” - Rowlet Legends Arceus Pokedex entry

Ever since the unending rain in Kanai Ward began, Kurumi’s partner had been unable to fly much at first, but it eventually adapted, and found out that the pittering of the rain helps to silence its flight. This was useful for when Kurumi had to spy on her targets, but when spying on Peacekeepers, she kept Rowlet in its ball, no exceptions. With how trigger-happy the Peacekeepers were, Kurumi simply could not risk Rowlet being on the receiving end of their aggression.

Yoshiko - Leavanny, Ninetales

“This gentle Pokémon has strong protective instincts. The leaves on its arms are sharp enough to slice a thick tree in half with one stroke.” - Leavanny Scarlet Pokedex entry

“Very smart and very vengeful. Grabbing one of its many tails could result in a 1,000-year curse.” - Ninetales LeafGreen Pokedex entry

Even in the metal metropolis that was Kanai Ward, life finds a way. Yoshiko met her first partner when it was still a wee Sewaddle in one of the few spots of greenery amongst the high-rise apartments in the city. Although the unending rain that started after the Blank Week proved rather troublesome for a Grass-type who was used to bathing in the sunlight, nurturing still proved enough to raise the little bug into a mature Leavanny. The caring Pokemon was more than happy to help in its trainer's solo rehearsals by mimicking other actresses.

Ninetales, however, had a more complicated story. Yoshiko found the little critter hiding from the rain only a few weeks after the Blank Week, but for whatever reason, it was feral and shaky, nearly biting at the girl when she tried to approach it. Yoshiko thought that it might have been the wounds it bore, but even wild Vulpix were usually rather calm (as long as you didn't touch their tails), and to snap at a human like a feral animal was rather unexpected. Although it got comfortable with Yoshiko with time, she still had to warn others, even her close friends, to not surprise the fox, lest they suffer a nasty bite instead of a 1000-year curse.

OOC: While there were some shades of it when I wrote for the Chapter 0 Master Detectives, this section with the girls is where I’m going to be drawing heavily from their expanded characterizations in the fic I had linked.

The two Pokemon chosen by Yoshiko share a common theme: their elegant and benevolent looks belie a vicious side that surfaces when enraged. Leavanny shows no mercy to those that harm its kin, and Ninetales, the ethereal and elegant fox spirit, is known for bearing disproportionate grudges and imbuing curses on travelers over a slight.

Despite being the most outwardly friendly between the three of them, Yoshiko bears a deep darkness within her ever since they committed to their murder plan, which is seen in full force after the deed was done.

Waruna - Incineroar

“Incineroar's rough and aggressive behavior is its most notable trait, but the way it helps out small Pokémon shows that it has a kind side as well.” - Incineroar Shield Pokedex entry

OOC: Let’s talk about one of the most infamous starters of all time. Incineroar is explicitly designed after a heel wrestler; it’s big, muscular, and loves to brag and challenge other Pokemon, but despite its showboating and Dark typing, it actually has a kind heart, and adores the support shown to it.

This pairs amazingly well with Waruna herself, who genuinely cares for her friends despite presenting herself as a demanding, no-nonsense actress.

In addition, Incineroar’s personality is a stealthy reference to how most wrestling matches are scripted, aka kayfabe; there is no real tension between the face and the heel, despite their theatrics and showboating. While Waruna and her friends may keep up the act of a cutthroat rivalry between them, it is precisely that, an act; none of it is real, and they are secretly still friends.

(And no, I did not give her a feline Pokemon just because she likes cats.)

Kurane - Phantump, Poltchageist

“This Pokémon came to be when the spirit of a deceased child possessed a tree stump. It now wanders the forest searching for friends.” Phantump Violet Pokedex entry

“Supposedly, the regrets of a tea ceremony master who died before perfecting his craft lingered in some matcha and became a Pokémon.” - Poltchageist Scarlet Pokedex entry

OOC: A running gag in the game, and expanded in the fic I had linked, is Kurane's tendency to sink into the background, and then reappear when she wants to and scaring the daylights out of people who hadn't noticed her. As such, what better type to give her than Ghost types? Specifically, two Ghost types: Phantump reflects its trainer in being shy and reclusive, but still yearning for friends.

However, shy is only one half of Kurane; when she is on the stage and performing, the mask changes, displaying a surprisingly competitive streak in her, and a desire to give the best performance she can. This earns her the respect of Poltchageist, who was once a perfectionist tea ceremony master who desired to hone his craft until the very best.
