you took a deep breath before tapping the green button and placing it back down on the bed.

“hey,” you can tell that he was tired based on his voice. “can you show your face, please? i miss you.”

ignoring the butterflies in your stomach, you hesitantly lifted the phone and shifted your position to lay on your side. “hey.”

“hey yourself.” steve grins. that stupid grin that makes your stomach turn, that grin you always want to see everyday.

“what’s..up?” you avoided looking at him and started to admire your surroundings and the posters placed on your wall. this was the only time you were glad you weren’t with him in person.

“i just wanted to see if you’re okay.” of course he will ask that. he's steve. he cares about other more than himself.

“i am, thanks.” you showed a smile that doesn't reach your ears and steve knew something was bothering you. “hey, look. i'm sorry about my confession- if it made you uncomfortable i'm sorry-”

“no,” you cut him off, looking back at his face on the screen. “i’m fine, really. you don't have to apologize. i was just, surprised.”

there was silence between the two of you for a few seconds, before you spoke again. “did you mean it?” you voice was only above whisper but steve managed to hear them. “of course,” he answered almost too quick, without any hesitation. “i've been trying to find the perfect opportunity and had been asking god for signs because i can't make a move myself-”

“asking god?” you chuckled and steve smiled hearing them, glad that he somehow lightened the mood. “well, more like begging.” he continues and you giggled.

once your laughter died you both fell into silence again. you still couldn’t believe that out of a fun joke, it would turn into a whole another situation. “so, um.. just so you know, i’m not mad, or upset, or anything. i really was just surprised. it felt like a dream because i didn’t know that you like me back and all i did was just supposed to be a fun joke but—”

“hold on, back?”

“what?”

“like you back. you said i like you back.” steve sat up on his bed and fixed his hair as his eyes widened. “i did...” you said slowly, not catching up.

“does that mean you..”

then it hit you. “oh, right. yeah. i- i like you..too.” you waited for his reaction and once you saw him smile you couldn’t stop yourself from doing the same.

“i knew it. and well, i guess that confirms it. we’re dating now. no taking back.” he smirks then laughs when your rolled your eyes. “don’t flatter yourself, harrington. i did not say shit.” you pointed your index finger on the screen, barely containing your giggles.

“based on your beautiful smile i think you don’t need to say it. i like you, and you like me. we’re dating.” steve gives you a teasing smile. you tried keeping your serious face but it won’t last longer so you finally smiled again. “alright, fine. no taking backs. we’re dating.” you said then laughed as he whisper-yelled ‘yes!’ while fist pumping the air.

he soon joined your laughter and you stayed like that until your jaw was pretty much in pain because of your smiles. when it was all quiet again, you both just admired each other’s presence through the screens of your phones. “i wish i was there with you.” he mumbles. “yeah, me too.” you hugged your cold pillow beside you, closing your eyes for a moment and imagining it as steve.

“are your parents home?”

you snorted at his random question. “i’m actually alone right now, they’re out because dad got promoted at his work so he and mom and i think a few friends went out to celebrate. they should be home by an hour or two. why?”

“nothing.” was all he said before hanging up. you were left confused but then he’s your best friend after all, so you knew right then and there that he’ll do something stupid. after you turned your phone off you suddenly felt watching a movie so you went to the kitchen to make some popcorn.

when it was finished and had been put in a bowl, that’s when you heard your doorbell rang—in a pattern which you recognize, and only one person does that.

you let out a quiet laugh when you realized who it was and set the bowl on the counter before opening the door.

“hi!” steve greeted you with a smile. “uh, hi?” you laughed nervously and stepped aside for him to go in. “i smell popcorn, are we having a movie night?” he says as he steps inside and shrugged off his jacket. “actually yeah, i’m planning on watching—”

“tangled.” he finishes off, you subconsciously smiled upon hearing your favorite movie. “how’d you know?”

steve snatches a few popcorns from the bowl as you both arrived in the kitchen. “(y/n), you have watched that movie 7 times this week and always gush to me about it.”

“well, you’re the only one that is around my age that i can talk to with that movie. robin and nancy aren’t that into it.” you replied, grabbing the bowl and making your way back to your bedroom, steve following your heels. “and you think i’m the best option to talk to about that?” he asks, plopping down on your bed and resting his back on the headboard.

“you’re not complaining.” you shrugged as you grabbed your laptop and sat beside steve.

“yeah, probably because i like you.” it came out of his mouth casually. you froze in place and felt your cheeks heat up, finally nodding your head slowly, “..probably.” as you typed in the movie in your laptop you felt steve scoot closer, making your breath hitch.

you were both in a comfortable silence while watching the movie, except for a few jokes and comments that steve makes and him explaining how similar he was to flynn rider.

“you know, since i’m eugene, you could be rapunzel.” he suddenly says. you eyes were still on the screen but your eyebrows furrowed. “why? i’m nothing like her.”

finally looking at steve, you almost screamed how he was already looking at you. “oh, you are so rapunzel. you may not have the longest hair in the world, but you are pretty much similar.” he replies, smiling and not taking his eyes off of you.

you paused the movie and shifted your body towards him, intrigued by his explaination. “how so?”

“well, first off,” steve starts, resting his hands on the soft mattress. “you’re both sweet, you’re both a huge ray of sunshine, have gorgeous eyes and smile, and eugene is head over heels over you — and since he doesn’t exist in real life, i’d like to be the substitute.” he finished with a confident smile.

after about three seconds, you burst out of laughter. you laughed. as much as he loves the sound of your laugh, he can’t help but pout. “(y/n), i’m trying to be sweet here!”

“i’m sorry!- it’s just- i can’t help but laugh at your flirting.” you managed to say between your laughs. you know he’s kidding but he looked at you like he was offended.

your laughter died down and held steve’s face. “it’s cute, sorry.” you mumble with a little laugh. when he finally smiled you turned to your laptop and continued the movie.

steve gazes at you for a few more seconds before watching the movie with you again. “thank you.” you whisper, glancing at him.

“you’re very much welcome, my rapunzel.” he says smiling before he slides a bit down on the bed so his head could reach your shoulder and rests it there.

you giggled as you heard him whisper,

hey! so ive been missing streams 😭 and i was wondering wtf has been happening in the dream smp since the election results were revealed? i'm so lost and i really dont wanna watch all the streams 😔😔😔

oh god a loooot has happened; i personally recommend watching wilburs edited vids on his channel if u rlly want to understand everything but ill give a basic summary!! 

major MAJOR spoilers for the dream smp (obviously) so if u don't want to hear about it then don't continue on (also its kinda long bcause all i think about is the dream smp-)

SO schlatt and quackity won the election, schlatt banished wilbur & tommy from l’manberg & renamed l’manberg to manberg. wilbur and tommy created a new place called pogtopia which is a bit away from the manberg / main area. quackity is schlatts vice president, tubbo is secretary of state (i believe?)

 tubbo is a spy and is secretly working for pogtopia. technoblade joins the server and joins pogtopia to help take down schlatt. all he did for the most part was farm potatoes...and breed horses....

dream reveals he doesnt support schlatt out of fear that schlatt will begin to take over the entierty of the dream smp, but he cant show his support of pogtopia publicly. niki doesnt like schlatt, schlatt taxes her, they just hate each other in general. fundy is also secretly a spy, but hes not directly giving info to anyone, he just keeps a journal about what he has learned. fundy begins to question what side he supports, and begins to lean more in favor of schlatt because schlatt has been cleaning up the area and basically has been making everything look nice. 

tommy and tubbo make a giant tunnel under manberg that leads to pogtopia (which is also connect to the prime path for, well, obvious reasons). technoblade has mostly just been trying to get the best gear for himself & has been trying to breed the best horse (he gets a trident at one point). 

wilbur goes insane and believes he and tommy are on the bad side of history, that they’re the villians. wilbur gives up on getting l’manberg back and has settled on just blowing it all to shit so no one can have it. dream backs wilburs plan and supplies him with TNT and wilbur rigs the entire underground of manberg with TNT (much like dream did in l’manberg during the dream smp war) tommy doesnt support wilburs decision to blow everything up. 

(this isnt exactly really story-related but sapnap killed tommys cow, henry, and dream, techno, and tommy teamed up to fight sapnap and a few others. idk it isnt rlly important to the plot but i enjoyed it so :D)

schlatt announces there will be a manberg festival, in celebration of democracy and everything. wilbur decides thats the day hes going to blow everything up. tommy still doesnt support wilburs plan. tubbo and fundy (and i think quackity?? idk) set up for the festival. tubbo has a speech written for the festival and one of the lines is the cue for wilbur to press the button to blow everything up.

the day of the festival comes along, schlatt gives a few speeches, wilbur and tommy watch from the top of one of the buildings. everyone is invited (even technoblade) to the festival, except wilbur and tommy. technoblade brings and OP rocket launcher crossbow and tries to get info on manberg. they play games and stuff.

 wilbur starts to question if he really wants to go through with blowing everything up (because he will be blowing up all his friends in the process) and tommy continues to try to talk him down. wilbur ends up asking tubbo what he should do, and tubbo doesnt know. wilbur tells tubbo that if he says the cue in the speech, he’ll do it, and if he doesn’t, he wont. tubbos speech comes along eventually, and at the end he hesitates saying the cue, and schlatt begins to ask if he had anything more to say. tubbo eventually does say the cue, and wilbur goes and runs off to find the button to blow everything up. 

schlatt starts encasing tubbo in a box and wilbur gets distracted and goes back to see what is going on. schlatt announces infront of everyone that tubbo is a traitor. schlatt calls technoblade up to the stage and tells technoblade to “take him out”. technoblade tries to stall, wilbur and tommy assure tubbo that techno is on their side and wont hurt him. techno gives in to peer pressure and kills tubbo with the rocket launcher crossbow, killing schlatt and quackity in the process (because they were on stage as well and just vacinity stuff yknow).

tommy and wilbur panic. wilbur goes and rushes to find the button, but cant find it. tommy reveals his position and goes in to kill techno, claiming techno has betrayed them. techno just starts shooting his rocket launcher into the crowd, killing basically everyone. tommy and tubbo meet up in the manberg-pogtopia tunnel. wilbur, tommy, tubbo, and techno all go back to pogtopia. wilbur and tommy are the most mad at techno, but wilbur forgives him. tommy doesnt and still believes hes a traitor. wilbur manipulates tommy and tells him to use that anger and to kill techno, so they fight in a pit that wilbur made. tommy dies, and everything is basically settled (though tommy is still mad at techno). niki also joins pogtopia. niki, tubbo, and tommy meet up just outside pogtopia and discuss whats going on. they all agree that wilbur has lost his mind and that they can only trust each other, and they begin to discuss plans of building up pogtopia so they can fight back to reclaim l’manberg. sentimental bit of them three looking off into the sunset as tommy plays the original blocks disc. 

schlatt doesnt really care what happened, him, quackity, fundy, and a few others continue to play games after the whole techno thing. day after the festival quackity and schlatt are on, tommy eventually joins as well. tommy plans to JFK schlatt and goes over to manberg to do so. he watches quackity and schlatt from a far, who are both at the white house. theyre both arguing over whether the white house should stay or go. schlatt wants it gone, quackity doesnt. tommy doesnt make a move and continues to watch. schlatt begins to insult the white house and starts to take it down. quackity gets pissed and kills schlatt and claims that he is no longer a part of manberg and proceeds to run off into the forest. schlatt then continues to demolish the rest of the white house. 

tommy goes after quackity; quackity joins pogtopia and they head off to pogtopia. wilbur gets on and claims he has found where the button is and that he doesnt care if no one else is on, all he wants to do is kill schlatt and blow everything up. tommy tells wilbur quackity has now joined them. quackity and tommy then proceed to build a giant dick infront of the manberg flag.

 wilbur then goes and shows quackity and tommy the button, quackity finds out about wilburs plan as a result. wilbur tries to push the button multiple times and quackity and tommy try to talk him down from pressing it. quackity says the only reason he ran against wilbur was to prevent dictatorship. they continue to attempt to stop wilbur from pressing the button. tommy at one point stands infront of the button and wilbur tells him to move to the side if he trusts him. tommy hesitates, but then moved. wilbur then destroys the button. wilbur says that now tommy will be leading them and making the next move. before returning to pogtopia to discuss the new plan, wilbur asks for quackity and tommy to wait outside. theres a sad moment and wilbur sings the l’manberg anthem and places the button back and says its just incase, as a backup, just so he knows that if something goes wrong, he can always rely on the button.

the three head back to pogtopia and discuss a plan. im going to be honest i was v lost on what they were saying when discussing the plans because they were all talking at once basically but the first plan, named plan a, is to use quackity to get to schlatt (its named plan a because ass...), then the second plan, plan 1, is yet to be determined, and the last plan, if those two fail, is plan b, which is to go with wilburs original plan of blowing everything to shit (b because bomb haha) 

YEA thats the basic summary i think? theres a lot of other details like the fact that fundy, tubbo, and sapnap are now dreamon hunters but !! yea. sorry for this being so long aaaaaaa

Rebel Without a Cause

Here is a fic I wrote to go with my Rebel! Eddie HC. I plan on writing more one shots like this and put them in a collection on here and AO3. Also I am trying to get back into writing and if you have any pointers feel free to message me.

Eddie paced around the room back and forth, going between states of pure rage and utter despair. After the fight with Pennywise he had told the Losers that his mom had been lying to him his whole life. That his medication were all gazebos (Ben tried to tell him they were called placebos but he was too mad to listen) and that he had never actually been a sickly kid.

“I-I-I JUST CANT BELIEVE SHE WOULD LIE LIKE THAT TO ME!” Eddie screamed in a fit of rage turning toward Beverly and Richie, then went back to pacing. They had gone back to Richie’s house because they knew his parents wouldn’t bother them and Bev wasn’t quite ready to go back to her empty home. “Like, she’s, she’s, my mom ya know.” He turned back towards Richie and Bev, tears starting to roll down his face, clinging tightly together in thick quiet streams. “She is supposed t-t-to love me. To help me gro-grow,” He choked back a sob trying to at least get the words out from the open vent that his mind had turned into. “and help me learn, not lie to me.” At the last word he managed before he fell to his knees, hitting the carpeted ground so hard that Richie was sure he would bruise.

“Eds, come on it’s okay, it’s okay, we’re here for you.” Richie ran over to Eddie and took him in his arms, slowly stroking the back of his head trying to find a way to soothe the pain out of him.

“W-What?” Eddie asked his voice coming back to a normal level but his eyes still acting like a broken dam.

“How about instead of crying we do something that she would hate? Not like a permanent thing but just something to rebel a little?” Beverly knew that doing something stupid always helped her feel a little better and thought it might help in this situation. Based off of Eddie’s head perking up and the river of tears turning into more of a stream of tears it was working.

“Like what?” Eddie’s asked. Voice still sad, but the sobbing has stopped which was a good thing.

“Well, Eddie Spaghetti, you could smoke with us?” Richie smiled at the boy, thinking his suggestion was a good one but Eddie just continued to frown at him.

“How about we start smaller, dumbass? Less lung damage and more change.” Bev already had an idea in mind, and it wasn’t to cause Eddie to have an anxiety attack about smoking. She knew that the sicknesses his mom had told him were fake but those attacks that fucked his breathing were real enough.

“Yea, I don’t think I would do well smoking.” Eddie gave a slight smile, not a big one, and he hadn’t stopped crying, but he had a small smile and that gave Richie hope.

“Well how about we dye your hair?” Bev thought that with Eddie’s openness to his more feminine side that this would be a good place for him to start rebelling. Plus she knew of Richie’s huge crush on Eddie and thought that this would drive him insane and that she could tease him about it.

“Dye my hair?”

He was still in Richie’s arms though and neither would dare to move.

Move they did not. In fact, they laid there, Richie holding Eddie, for so long that Eddie was surprised their muscles didn’t atrophy. Eddie began to sink further into Richie’s chest his head feeling heavy from the tears. His eyes were closed and his breathing was steady but Richie couldn’t tell if he was asleep or not. It didn’t really matter either way, but as Richie sat there staring at Eddie he couldn’t help but fall deeper and deeper into the well of love that had been building their whole childhood. “What was that Ed’s?”

“I said, I love you Bitchy.” Richie blinked as his eyes widened.

“Okay, Bev I am getting up.” Eddie rubbed his eyes which were still red, and probably would be for another hour after all that crying. “How do we do this?”

“You will do nothing, my darling boy. Mama Bev will handle it all for you.” She leaned down to plant a kiss on his cheek and took him by the hand. She dragged him towards the bathroom where they spent the next 45 minutes. Eddie sitting on the toilet seat complaining about all the germs while Bev put the dye in his hair and waited to wash it out.

“Okay times up, Richie take the child’s head and put it under the sink.”

“Yes Madam.” Richie took Eddie by the hand and led him to the sink to wash the dye out.

“Now Eddie, your hair is pretty dark so we probably have to do this twice but lucky for us I love you and bought two box dyes for just this purpose.” Eddie lifted his head from the sink and looked at Bev. His hair still wet and matted from washing the dye out of it.

“Thanks Bev.” Eddie gave her a grin from ear to ear which meant the dye therapy was proving to be effective. “I’m just gonna dry off then we can decide what to do.”

“I can promise you’ll look fucking adorable no matter what color your hair is Eds”

“Don’t call me that Trashmouth.”  Eddie pleaded, but couldn’t turn away fast enough to hide his blush. He grabbed a towel off the rack and ruffled his hair.

“Here let me Spaghetti.” Richie took the towel from him and started rubbing it back and forth on his head.

“Oh wow! Your hair looks great, Eds!” If Richie hadn’t been in love with Eddie before he certainly was now. The boy’s dark brown hair had turned into a deep shade of auburn red. The hair fell on his face in all the right ways and the red played against his sun kissed skin like tree leaves in autumn breaking up the sunlight.

“Really?!? You think so?” He turned to the mirror styling it back and forth then looked back at Richie and Bev.

“Yea, you look totally adorable. I’m sure that hair will make someone fall for our little Eddie.” Bev smiled at the smaller boy and gave him a hug. Then turned to Richie and gave him a very sly smile of all knowing. “Well I am actually gonna go to Bill’s and…hang out. See ya boys.” She gave them both a kiss on the cheek then turned and walked out the room.

“Well what do you want to do Richie?”

“We could just lay down and watch Tv, I don’t think my parents are coming home till late.” Richie gave a sad smile before taking Eddie’s hand and leading them downstairs. He wanted to tell Eddie how cute he looked with his hair, he wanted to tell him how much he wanted to kiss him, and hold him, but for now he would take the unquestioning cuddling and tell him later.

And some of them (Aizawa, Toshinori from some point on, Bakugou’s parents, Fatgum to say some) have a great understanding of the kids they’re responsible for and make decisions based on what’s right while at the same time accomodating the kids’ aspirations and dreams, which is super amazing because it doesn’t negate the fact that even if they’re just kids they’re still people, you know? They talk to them and understand them and act as guardians without clipping their wings, you never see this sort of things in media tbh so I appreciate it a lot

Heres How Corporate America Is Screwing Millennials Out Of Their Fair Pay

If youre a Millennial employee in the public or private sector, your wages are probably being suppressed to pay for the pensions of Baby Boomers who have one foot in retirement.

On March 6, 2017, the published findings by the Urban Institutea thinktank that has been documenting ageist disparities in compensation packages that stifle the upward mobility of younger American workers. Their findings are corroborated by studies conducted in recent years by the UK-based policy center Resolution Foundation.

Generations are slippery and hard to define. Marketers Neil Howe and William Strauss maintain that Millennials were born between 1982 and 2004; Pew Research Center puts the goalposts at 1981-1997. But with the conversation about Millennials gradually shifting from vague stereotypes and generalizations to quantitative socioeconomics, generational thinking is no longer the shallow zodiac of the social sciences. It has become a proxy for the politics of class.

When it comes to rewarding the young, the public sector gets an F

The Urban Institutes research describes the public sector as a site of intergenerational warfare. The policy center graded the state-run pensions of all 50 states plus the district of Columbia, assessing how well Americas school districts, universities, police and fire departments, and local governments distribute benefits evenly among age cohorts.

The data sets goal is to see how good a given state pension is at letting Millennial employees see returns on their pension payments before the age of 35. In the category Rewarding Younger Workers, no state pension plan received an A from the Urban Institute. 14 received a B; 16 received a C; and 21 received either a D or an F. In other words, when it comes to rewarding younger workers by allowing them to accrue a higher amount of pension benefits earlier rather than later, the Urban Institute posits that the vast majority of state employers are either average of failing.

As teachers across the country retire, their pensions are being subsidized by [new hires], wrote Karl Russell and Mary Williams Walsh in the . As more and more pension plans develop shortfalls, states have been imposing cost-cutting measures, and research shows that the newest hires are bearing the brunt of the changes.

Millennial wage throttlingthe British example

How did we arrive at this state of affairs? The Resolution Foundation has answers. Authored in June 2016 by researcher Lauren Gardiner, the British thinktanks Intergenerational Commission produced a report titled Stagnation Generation.

Gardiner blames defined benefit contribution schemes for the generational disparities seen in wages. These are packages of promised benefits that employers made to employees in the salad days of the 1980s and 1990s, when it seemed like the economy would soar forever. Some cocky corporations even took lengthy contribution holidays from putting money into employee retirement funds, believing that the assets already contained in these pensions would continue growing at a robust rate.

When various bubbles of the 20th and early 21st century burst, the value of the securities in these retirement accounts evaporated. To compensate, corporations employed cost-cutting measures to restore their funding positions. These measures involved denying defined benefit packages to younger employeesand they also entailed depressing the wages of younger hires, then rerouting those funds to subsidize the benefits of the aging Boomer workforce.

Young people have seen the biggest pay squeeze in the aftermath of the financial crisis, writes Gardiner in her summary of the British private sector. According to Intergenerational Foundation researcher Matt Hitchens, an estimated 42 billion of potential pay raises for younger employees are lost to pension payments that go to the oldest and wealthiest British workers.

American corporations eat their young

You dont need to look all the way to Americas parent country to see struggling young people.

A study conducted by the American Legislative Exchange Counsel in June 2015 placed the total pension debt of Americas state and local governments at $4.7 trillionan astounding 22% of Americas GDP. New York and Illinois have unfunded pension debts in excess of $300 billion each. Californias estimated pension debt (a whopping $550-$750 billion) is such a crisis that California lawmakers are expected to bring a statewide pension reform measure to the ballot in 2018.

In the meantime, pension debt will be quietly financed by the declining fortunes of Millennials. The University of Californias Board of Regents voted to increase student tuition by 25% to bail out the schools underfunded pensions. In a 2016 op-ed for , Center on Entrepreneurial Innovation director Lawrence McQuillan exclaimed that the unwillingness to properly manage pension plans pushes the cost onto younger people and future generations.

With America still reeling from the Great Recession in 2009, the Social Security Administration published a bulletin titled The Disappearing Defined Benefit Pension and Its Potential Impact on the Retirement Incomes of Baby Boomers. The paper noted that 46% of the defined benefit pension plans in Americas public sector were underfunded. The document does not mention Millennials specificallybut it does explain that ageist disparities in wages and retirement packages are so intense that younger Baby Boomers who narrowly missed out on defined benefit packages are losing wealth accrual relative to their older counterparts.

The SSA explains that the economys shift away from manufacturing [and] toward service led to the decline of defined benefit pension packages. Indeed, Millennials are increasingly employed in fields like food service and caretaking, which are largely less well-compensated than the golden age of assembly line jobs in factories. As a result, retirement is for many Millennials an increasingly distant goal prefaced by a 21st century world of work that feels like an obstacle course.

Deconstructing the Millennial screw-up narrative

Television shows like and movies like (2013) encourage us to see the bungling adulthood of Millennials as a matter of light-hearted comedy. They want to keep you in debt, Maya Kazan tells Greta Gerwigs character in I know that, Gerwig replies, meeting the tension with comedic relief; I see documentaries.

But theres nothing funny about debt. In a scorching essay titled But Seriously Lets Talk About Millennial Poverty, writer Hanna Brooks Olsen declares that when we talk about Millennials, we cant not talk about the debt that keeps us reigned in. That debt is powered by the predatory market of student loans and credit cards. But it also consists of lost wages that go towards cushioning the retirement of older employees. Olsen cites a 2014 study detailing how median wages for 18 to 24-year-olds have declined or remained unchanged during the last decade in industries related to education, retail, and service work.

For Millennials, the titular insecurity of Issa Raes television series is not just personal and psychological. Its also structural and fiscal.

The Millennial search for solutions

While Millennials lead hardscrabble lives of precarity and doubt in increasingly unaffordable American cities, retiring Boomers have come to expect generous Social Security benefits. Pulled disproportionately from the paychecks of Millennial workers who will not see the same cushy retirement when they age, observers have pointed out that Boomer returns on these entitlements are many times greater than the gains they would have seen if they invested the Social Security taxes withheld from their paychecks in high-performing index funds.

With the median pay of Millennials hovering around poverty level, it is no accident that Americas youth tend to favor policies that advance a radical redistribution of wealth. In the 2016 presidential election, Millennial support buoyed Bernie Sanders message of democratic socialism, with Sanders noting in his 2016 memoir that his campaign won strong majorities of young people [in] virtually every state. Concurrently, the leftist organization Democratic Socialists of America has experienced a 300% increase since November 2016, fueled largely to rising rates of Millennial membership. A Harvard University survey released in April 2016 showed 51% of 18-to-29 year old respondents declining to say they supported capitalism.

Millennials can learn to articulate feasible alternatives to failed economic policies in the marketplace of ideas. If companies will not extend plush defined benefit compensation packages to young people, we should lobby to create portable retirement savings accounts. As a result, we would be able to benefits for retirement no matter what kind of jobs we work: freelance, temporary, or salaried. Portable retirement accounts like the kind advocated by entrepreneur-economist Nick Hanauer would also combat shady employers who hire Millennials on a nominal part-time basis for 39-hours-a-week in order to avoid paying benefits that would come from a 40-hour-a-week commitment.

And if its possible to withhold a portion of your paycheck to subsidize a massive entitlement program like Social Security, we should seriously consider what it would look like to tax big businesses at a rate that would subsidize a Universal Basic Income for unretired Americans. If every adult had a livable income simply by virtue of being a freeborn American citizen, we would probably see far fewer struggling-adult narratives like and. And thats a good thing.

A dying systems last breath

The Millennial condition is a generational deadweight wrapped inside of a bank statement with a negative balance. While an endless stream of internet articles ask why Millennials are not purchasing homes, getting married, or having kids at the same rate as their parents, were all too familiar with the fiscal pressures that are preventing us from doing so.

In 1852, Karl Marx wrote the tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living. But unfortunately for Millennials, the tradition of defined benefit pension schemes and the resulting wage suppression is alive and well.
