A standalone about a siren who must take a prince's heart every year for her birthday. Prince hearts seem to be hard to come by this year.

The Nevernight Trilogy ★★★★★

I will start by saying that this series is a wild, WILD ride. It might not be for you (& that's ok! I tried to think of books that fit into your safe zone). But I wanted to recommend it because I, personally, enjoyed said wild ride. It's also important to mention that there is a lot of controversy around the books & the author so if you are not comfortable reading/consuming things like that, I just wanted to state it :)

(contains smut) No one is safe. Mia Corvere is morally grey. Secret Assassin Society. A magic system where Mia talks to shadows, it's cute. Smut, that's always a win. PEACE. LOVE. TRIC. <3 ADORABLE MAN UGH. Lots of twists and turns. A poisoning. A backstabbing. A lot of tears, man, so many tears.

Caraval Trilogy ★★★★☆

The first book was my least fav tbh. But the concept of a momentary, midnight festival with a hot man named Legend is an automatic hook, line, and sinker for me. (something about men with names that aren't names. see: Ghost, Gaz, Price, Soap).

Standalone. Alice in Wonderland themed. Jest is probably the best male mc ever. Katherine's aight but Jest shines. Arranged marriage n she wants OUT. Secret romance. I am sorry. I am so sorry. I had my sorority's book club read this one and we all got into a book slump afterwards.

Ali Hazelwood Books (contemporary standalones)

I feel like a lot of her books are kind of the same copy and paste, but they are also highly entertaining & a good read if you're looking for something that won't bog you down or make you sad.

I spit out blonde strands of my hair when it flies into my mouth. I release a huff as I bend down and pick up a box from the pile which was unloaded from the truck. I then head back inside the place, watching my step as I went.

"Oh, my dear, you didn't have to!" one of the head organizers calls out to me from across the room, interrupting the instruction she was giving to the rest of the volunteers.

I shoot her a lopsided smile, "are you calling me weak, young lady?"

The grey haired woman named Berta laughs as I make my way to the back. She calls out, "not at all, princess!"

Berta, and the two people she had been instructing, watch me go to the back. One of the two whispers to the other, "ya know she's actually the princess, as in the literal princess of the country."

Gasp, "wait, really? I was gonna say she looks so much like the princess!"

"Yeah, she does cause she is the princess! She volunteers here often."

"Hush you two," Berta chides, "enough gossip!"

I release a breath and roll my shoulders back when I put the heavy box down. I take a moment to stretch and then head to the door to repeat the process. That was until someone walked in, grunting, carrying two boxes in their arms.

"Hey, you need some help there?" I say walking over.

I see blue eyes and dark hair peek from behind the brown object. I offer him a smile and move to get one of the boxes from him.

"It's alright, I've got it," he calls as I move to take one from him.

I give him a quick nod and instead watch him as he puts the boxes down.

When he straightens up, he huffs and turns to me, in time to see my smirk before I speak, "an impressive feat, considering the weight of those boxes, superman."

He catches his breath and returns my expression, exaggeratedly biting his lower lip as he grips one of his biceps, "these guns are no joke."

I snort and raise a hand, "lucky for me, I know how to disassemble artillery."

He pulls his head back, lips still curved up into a smile, "wait, really?"

I nod with a brow quirked, "quicker than you can say Worcestershire."

We share a chuckle because of my words. I then extend my hand to him, saying my name in introduction. He obliges, taking my hand, telling me his name is Tom.

"Do you volunteer here often?" he asks after we withdrawing hands.

I hum and narrow my eyes, "I'd say alternatively would be more appropriate."

"Ah."

"And you?"

"I think, is the third time I've come back here."

I nod, motioning to the door, silently leading us out. I turn to him as I say a quick thank you when opens the door, "is there any particular reason you've come back?"

"Honestly, the people here are kind and I've grown to love the company of the elderly chaps I've met."

I match the smile on his face as we make our way outside to get the rest of the boxes. "Yeah, I'd say the same reasons have drawn me back to this place as well."

"Oh, good," someone calls just before we could exit, making Tom and I turn to the speaker. It was Berta, "you're both here. We need help giving the seniors grub. I'd love it if both my prettiest volunteers gave out the food so they wouldn't be so cranky."

Tom and I chuckle, catching each other's gaze along the way.

"Come on, lovies," she beckons, waving her hands, "I've got enough people on the job for the boxes."

When she walks off, I turn to Tom, who raises a hand, "after you."

I give him a nod and a soft smile as I trail after Berta.

Once we get to the cafeteria, it was apparent they really did need help giving out food, for not only were there many old ladies and gentlemen queued up impatiently, there were very apparent individuals giving the poor youth volunteers a hard time over the food.

Berta gives an exasperated gasp.

I place a hand on her shoulder as I watch the scene that was stressing her out, "I've got it," I mutter, walking over to the elderly gentleman and the young lady he was scolding.

Berta watches the scene play out, as does Tom behind her. Tom cannot help but chuckle at the exaggerated expressions and the big smile that replaces the loud remarks that was being thrown.

Berta lets out a sigh as he watched the periodically difficult man walk off happily, "that girl is truly a gem."

Tom nods, humming softly.

"Come along now, love, the food is not going to serve itself."

After disarming the intense argument, I release a sigh and find my way to the food stall, smiling at Tom who was there, blushing at the compliments the elderly ladies were giving him.

"Quite a popular fellow, aren't you," I tease, coming up to his side, as I ask the next person in line what they wanted to eat.

Tom smiles at the lady that tells him he's got gorgeous blue eyes. I chuckle to myself upon hearing it. He turns to me as he grabs an empty plate, "not nearly as popular as you though. You're clearly a fan favorite. Everyone has been asking me about you."

"Hmm, and what have you been saying?"

His lips curve, "that I have but only met the princess today myself, but I am sure she is as brilliant as they have been describing."

I playfully roll my eyes at him, just as a woman greets me by name and title. I match her small curtsy with a nod, as she then begins to trail off about how much she loved my mother, "I remember watching her wedding in '81. Oh, the princess was such a beauty, and you my dear, are the spitting image of her."

I offer her a smile, "that is truly such a compliment. I do try to be more like her everyday."

She sighs, "such a shame. She was gone too soon."

I nod, "yes. Yes, she was."

After that conversation, I the air between Tom and I became a bit rigid. I couldn't blame him. The topic usually elicits that type of reaction. I work on breaking the ice then.

"Tell me, Tom," I say, once we served the last of the people in line. I lean on the food cart as I turn to the taller man.

He nods and peers down on me, brushing off his sleeves along the way.

"Are you one of the very few people on earth that don't like Princess Diana?"

He chokes on his spit.

I snort, "I mean," I raise my hand in surrender, "I do recall how she kept me from eating chocolates to my hearts content, and I say, I still have a bit of resentment in me over that, even after all these years."

Tom breaks into a fit of laughs. It is enough to break his tension.

I join him with much softer laughter before adding, "or perhaps you're just upset you didn't manage to snag a roll in one of the many biographical shows about my family being produced."

Tom snorts again, pressing his lips tightly.

"I have the ladies over there to thank for the information of you being an actor," I tilt my head to the right.

He gathers himself and allows his chuckles to die down a little before continuing. Tom withholds his laughter as he jokes, "I'm actually rather upset over the fact you haven't seen my work."

I match his sarcastic expression with a sigh, "unfortunately, my time watching on the telly is quite limited. I don't have room for bad acting."

Tom hollers, gripping his chest as he throws his head back in laughter, "ok, now that hurts!"

I shrug, pouting as I pat his shoulder, "the truth hurts."

Before Tom could rebut, I hear my name get called by a woman. I pull away from Tom and spot Lizzie. She was, quite frankly, my biggest fan in the place. I wave to her as she does me. Soon enough, she is beckoning me over.

I nod as I smile at her, turning to Tom after, "duty calls."

"I'll be here waiting," he offers, "you've got this, your grace."

Oda:

If you're wearing shorts and have bruises he will poke them when you're resting your legs on him. He’s silent about it too and if you yell at him he pretends to act like he doesn't know what you're talking about.

Will smack your sunburn but this one is actually an accident. He just wanted to pat you on the back because you're amazing.

Will space out when you talk too long, sometimes certain objects are just so… mesmerizing

Dazai:

Loves to jumpscare you the only exception is if it was a trigger. In that case he will just call your name and whip something at you for you to catch at random.

When you're driving he likes to reach over and honk your horn. It's almost caused so many roadside fistfights.

If he sees a dog in public he will bark and growl at it.

Kunikida:

Won’t let you on the bed without socks on. You could be sick as a dog and he’ll still enforce this rule.

Cleaning is hard because he has a hard time throwing things away. You'll spend extra time as he holds two identical pens, trying to decide which one he wants to keep. He’s learned to plan certain days in his schedule for cleaning now.

Won't let you turn up the music in the car and will keep it at a level that's so low it's annoying.

Twain:

Walks around the house shirtless but then complains about how cold it is.

Blasts his music so loud when he wakes up in the morning and it's always early 2000’s hits. It's not rare for you to have Pocketful of Sunshine by Natasha Bedingfield stuck in your head by 9 am.

Always has to climb something, this stems from his adventurous side. It's not really that annoying but when you’re in a crowded area and he runs off to go climb the tall statue, screaming at you to take a photo… Yes it is. Especially when children try and follow him and you're stuck receiving glares from the parents.

Akutagawa:

Will not let you throw any food products out. He tells you it's a perfectly good meal (even if it's not) and that he will eat it tomorrow. It’s sad because you know this stems from childhood but it’s still annoying.

Reuses the same gross, musty ziplock baggies. You keep buying new ones but he doesn't get it lol.  

Will tell you if your breath smells, hair is messy, outfit is ugly. He does not see an issue with this and it's nice knowing someone has your back but he doesn't have to be so rude about it..

Atsushi:

If he drinks he's one of those drinkers who will not let you take it from him. Keeps an iron grip on the cup. He finishes it no matter how drunk and always throws up. Thankfully he rarely drinks.

He stops to help everyone, literally even if they just look like they need help. You've been late to so many things.

Will eat anything. Once you made steak and somehow forgot about it. It was hard as a brick yet he still almost broke his teeth eating it. You think you saw some tears as he told you it was delicious.

Mori:

Listens to people's conversations in public and isn't afraid to comment, loudly, about it. You know it's loud because they either stop talking or try and confront you guys.

Comes up to stops fast and brakes so hard you feel like he does it on purpose.

Sometimes if he and Elise get into a “disagreement” he’ll try and rope you in to take his side and you always do, knowing it would probably give him more satisfaction if you chose to side with her.

Poe:

Asks for constructive criticism but will then argue with you about why you're wrong.

Always humming a song he heard Twain singing and then it gets stuck in your head too.

Will deny stupid things like why your favorite mug is in the trash or why he just let out rather loud scream in the bathroom. You know he's lying because he looks away and makes sure his bangs are covering his eyes.

Ranpo:

Will call you out on any lie even if you don't mean to lie you just forgot about some of the details.

Don't take him grocery shopping if you have a set amount you want to spend. He won't even sneak, he will just say he wants something and throw it in the cart.

Such a backseat driver even though he can't drive.

Fitzgerald:

Likes to act like he's still in his twenties and will somehow get the two of you invited to college parties where he will attempt to do a kegger in front of everyone. You end up being the one to hold him up and he always ends with a, “LETS FUCKING GO!”

Likes to ask for the senior discount even though he's not that old, he just likes to hear the women validate that he's not old.

It’s scary how he used to buy without looking and now will scream if the price on a price tag is too high.

Steinbeck:

Always looking at the grass for wheat to chew on. It's so cheesy when you walk into the city and he's got it sticking out of his mouth.

He gets weirdly intimate with nature and you feel like you're third wheeling.

Has the mentality that he has to provide for you because he is the man. He gets so shocked when he finds out you still want to work.

Chuuya:

Has a hard time making decisions you could ask him what he wants for dinner and his mind will just break.

Gets way too pissed at movies and will actually get up and walk away. Once you were kicked out of the theater because he wouldn't stop yelling at the screen. Another time he walked out you waited a whole ten minutes before you realized he wasn't coming back.

Sometimes activates his ability at night and it's so scary waking up to him floating halfway across the room.

WOMAN TIME!!!!!!!!!!

Yosano:

Will glare at you so intensely if you say something she disagrees with.

Always tries to rope you into drinking with her even if you’ve said no the past ten nights.

Will describe wounds or injuries in such detail and just won’t stop, almost like she’s trying to fuck with you, but she’s not.

Gin:

Claims to be nothing like her big brother but then will go on to make the same facial expressions and do some of the same mannerisms as him.

Will spend hours trying things on just to put it all back, leave the store and change her mind when you’re almost home. Then she’ll have you run back with her to buy it all.

Is used to sneaking around so scares you a lot. Also on the topic of being silent sometimes she just won’t respond, thinking you can just read her vibes / mind.

Kouyou:

Will judge what you eat, especially fast food but will try and steal a fry in private when you're not looking.

Will say things like, “Well that's just the way the world works.” If someone tries to share their baggage with her. You understand she’s had a pretty rough life but it's caused you to almost spit out your drink multiple times.

At functions forgets about you for about an hour while she mingles with everyone else, you could tap on her shoulder and she'll dismiss you like you're a subordinate. Until you clear your throat again you'll see the slight blush as she apologizes.

Higuchi:

She has no sense of privacy. If she hears a crash or loud noise she will bust down the door. It’s sweet but not when the noises are usually from you knocking all the shampoo bottles down again.

Horrible road rage actually puts you on edge to be in the car with her. She doesn't even have to be driving.

Likes to act like she's a professional at everything and people usually believe it because of her suit. It's so nerve wracking when she giggles when they walk away with false information.

Alcott:

Will agree to everything you suggest but you can only tell when she doesn’t want to do it when you’re currently doing it.

Yet she’s not afraid to grumble about how annoying it is when someone bumps into you and doesn’t apologize. It’s sweet but you’re left dealing with the situation if the person is aggressive enough to say something.

Always corrects your spelling or if you say something like “I could care less.”

Lucy:

Will fish for compliments in a very obvious way like, “Wow. Wish someone would call me pretty..” and then just stare right at you.

Kicks you so violently in her sleep but won't let go of you so you cant get away.

Constantly stealing from restaurants. You're banned from a couple restaurants because she got caught trying to steal a cup or salt shaker.

draco loved her so much and he thought they would have their future just like the way they always imagined it to be, but he clearly was wrong.

he cherished every moments he had with her. when the first time he asked her out nervously and she agreed eventually. since then, they started dating. they’ve been dating since their third year.

he remembered when they were an iconic couple back then, people are so envy with their relationship. and when the yule ball comes, they came together and that night couldnt be more perfect.

that was until his sixth year. the worst year in his life.

*walks to lunch with lanie* so we're headed to the mess hall and it's hotter than balls outside especially since i'm wearing long sleeve and pants but idc bc i wasn't sweating so it wasn't that bad and out of nowhere delaney comes and starts tryna talk to me but i can't hear bc earbuds. since i'm listening to music i can barely hear her and idc enough abt her to take 'em out and since i can't fucking hear i don't pay attention to me stumbling bc i thought i stepped on my laces but it turns out the fucking ginger shit tried tripping me. and then here we go bc too many words not enough knuckle juice to type a lot:
