this is an abadoned wip i started 2 weeks ago, i don’t have the motivation and quite frankly the skill to continue tbh, just putting it here bc i realized i don’t have a single coloured piece on my blog (bc i hate colouring, sketching and lineart is my soul), if this looks haphazard, it’s bc it is LMAO

anyways i’ve been thinking to assign some of the musical’s characters to an instrument, and i’ve decided on hamilton with the violin and burr on the piano, mind you, these are not based on historical facts i just wanna draw them with instruments for fun, from my searches, hamilton either played a little piano, or only sang, while burr had no records of instrument playing, so tl;dr im just delusional 😁, also hey if anyone wants to bullshit their way into an actual thematic reasoning why hamilton and burr plays the violin and piano respectively in my headcanon, then im open to it :], I picked those two instruments cuz i just love the sound of them together and they are both pretty prominent in dear theodosia so there is some significance to them playing those instruments

1. How many different sketches do you usually have until your piece is finished?

If it’s a commission (that doesn’t require drawing the exact reference), I have 4 stages of sketching:

Stage 1. Ideas sketching. I do stickmans and general shapes that are most understandable to me. Doesn’t have to be clean, just enough for me to understand how I will place my elements in the paper, how movement flows, how the posture will look, etc etc. Here are some of my stage 1 sketches:

This one’s for a collab painting I will do with a friend. That’s our sketches while conceptualizing.

These are my concept sketches for the recent splatoon commission I did. For commissions, I always do 3-6 sketches of different poses when given freedom, which I will then present to my client and see which one they like best and I’ll go with it (bc I’m indecisive too LMAO)

Stage 2: Presentable concept sketch. When I have these ideas pinned down, I’ll make a more presentable version of the sketch to send to the client. That means visible body shape & posture, key facial expressions, mvt indications, etc. Following the splatoon commission sketches, here’s their stage 2:

Stage 3: Initial sketch on paper. When the client chose which posing is best, I’ll sketch it down on paper. I use rule of thirds, mark the margins, make sure the proportions are aligned and correct before I do the last stage (bc it’s going to be tedious to readjust everything once I’ve noticed it’s not centered or smth like that). I forgot to take a picture of the other posing’s stage 3, but it’s like this!

Stage 4: Lineart sketching. DO NOT jump straight to hard lineart, it will leave marks or stains when you erase. Sketch lightly first with an HB or 2B or any B pencils, honestly it’s in your hand’s pressure control and how you hold the pencil, but personally HB or 2B is good. This stage can be messy as long as the main lineart is shaping.

After that, I can start 1st stage of lineart! But this is all when I do commissions or serious pieces tho. If I’m sketching for fun, I just do 1 sketch then straight to lineart ^^

2. A piece from this year that you’re really proud of?

Honestly, I’m still proud of my concept art projects for my 2D and 3D animation subjects! When I look at it, it makes me feel like a professional concept artist☺️ It’s a warm feeling seeing my old OCs drawn like they’re posted in artstation or something hahah.

3. Something you would like to improve on?

I would like to improve on a lot of things, but getting started & staying consistent is mostly my obstacle when I want to improve. I want to learn how to draw:

Hair and different types of it. Hair is the thing I hate looking at in my drawings bc I can’t get it to look how I want it to.

Backgrounds - landscapes, cityscapes, seascape, etc (and how to be patient drawing it bc I always give up halfway LMAO)

Reflective surfaces

Different textures (fuzzy texture, chrome, rough, etc)

Bokeh & blurs (traditionally, on paper)

Shadows of two or more light sources crossing together.

Plants and flowers. Always so embarrassing to draw a piece with flora in it bc they look so elementary level LMAO I absolutely love flowers, but god have you seen my “Unbosom” artwork, I was NOT proud of how I drew petunias ;w;

Animals. I will not be showing my pathetic attempts in sketching a horse from memory, but you can imagine how horrible it was for me to want to improve on drawing animals.

Musical instruments. Still a struggle, especially when instruments are drawn from a different angle like that one time I did the Issei Noro digital fanart.

Fire and water.

4. What’s something you hope people notice when looking at your art?

I hope people notice the composition! I’m trying to be mindful of space, visual weight, and shapes of the movement or the posing, they contribute a lot to how to make a drawing less static or empty looking. But honestly, if the viewers didn’t notice, that’s fine ^^

chris bean:

as of TPTGW is the ‘newly elected’ head of the drama society, and is known at the university for his charitable & philanhropic work. he has six acting credits within the polytechnic to his name.

i was going to presume his choice of course at the uni was acting or directing, but his PPGW bio states that his ‘dacting’ (directing and acting) is all self-taught, so who knows. maybe he’s just in the society because of his aforementioned charitable work.

robert grove:

has starred in 40 productions with the society since 2002 (when he began work at cornley polytechnic as a caretaker - i’m taking this to mean he was never actually a student there.) anyway wow explains why they call him a “veteran actor” lol.

in his TPTGW bio it states that he joined the drama society after failing to get in to any other societies.

he didn’t live on university campus and commuted in from his parents’ house. he mostly just wanted to make friends - he’s interested in snooker and wants to meet like-minded people.

in his PPGW bio he still wants to make friends and says you can reach him via twitter @dennistyde. i checked this account too and again it does exist but hasn’t been used since 2013, and there are only 3 tweets so its much more bare-bones than the others. i like his one tweet about drinking a mug of bovril to calm his nerves before a show.

in TPTGW bio it says he was a first year studying human geography and crime which i was surprised about but sure okay. it also says here that he happily donated “a large portion of his recent inheritance” to the society to help fund it.

at the bottom of TPTGW’s cast page it states that the west end performance of the play is “made possible by a generous legacy from claude bennett” who’s presumably max’s grandfather? or just father? idk

also i realised that the american version of TPTGW calls it “the cornley university drama society” since i guess you guys dont have polytechnics over there. a polytechnic is like... a university that offers the arts (among the classics you know science law what have you) basically. by 2021 in promotional videos etc. shields in character as chris has dropped “polytechnic” altogether from the group’s name (but varies between calling it ‘the cornley drama society’ and ‘the cornley amateur dramatics society’) i assume to reflect how much time has passed since the group put on their first production under chris’ leadership - and that now they’re simply operating unattached to the university because they’ve become a real family. love love love, sillyness and love.

X-Drake

THIS WAS NOT PART OF THE MISSION. He knows how dangerous it would be for her if he pursued her so he'd try to keep his feelings suppressed. He wouldn't be able to completely keep her out of his mind though, so he'd compromise with himself by watching over her from afar. Any danger or trouble that comes to her town always manages to avoid her home specifically. Is there a shortage of food? X-Drake's crew makes sure there's enough for her and her family. As much as he wants to help the whole town, he can't afford to draw suspicion by being too charitable as one of Kaido's crewmates.

She might notice him watching her from afar and he would be so flustered, lol. Like he'll whip around and walk away in a nanosecond and continue doing whatever he was doing, but now he's got a bit of pink in his cheeks. If she started approaching him more often or leaving him notes or something at a distance, he'd be hesitant to return those affections just because he doesn't want to drag them into danger.

In the end though, I think that he wouldn't be able to separate himself from her entirely. He has a sense of chivalry and he thinks that it isn't fair to do that without at least telling her why. He'd arrange to meet with her in private since he doesn't want to just leave a note for her, but the moment he's finally in a room with just her, seeing her look up at him...he can't do it. He can't leave her. He'll confess his feelings and then tell her that he understands if she doesn't return them or doesn't want to be with him due to how dangerous it could be. And if she insists on being with him regardless of that, he'd make sure he keeps her safe and vows to protect her for as long as he draws breath.

He's such a gentleman that it hurts lmao. Flowers, holding doors and chairs out for her, politely averting his gaze when she's even slightly undressed (seriously, she could be in a kimono with bare shoulders like Black Maria's and he'll bite his cheek and look away to give her "privacy") He also dislikes whenever she's around other pirates and tries to distance her from his business unless he can't avoid it. Also the first time they kiss is THE most romantic thing ever; he even does that thing where he brushes a stray piece of hair behind her ear, and dips her back a little bit while holding her when he goes in to kiss her. It's probably done in the moonlight, he's caressing the small of her back, it's straight out of a storybook.

Jack

Jack is someone who's easily angered and who will rampage if pushed further. I think that he feels all of his emotions in an intense way, so when he falls in love he falls pretty damn hard. Once he sets his sights on ____ he's going to immediately try to court them.

He's been in Wano for a while and knows what's typically expected of someone trying to show their feelings/intentions, so he'll send her letters and small gifts for a while before inviting her to meet with him one evening so he can formally propose to her. I HC that Wano's views on romance and marriage are a mix between Heian and Edo-era customs of courtship, so things move to marriage pretty quickly by modern standards. He'll offer a VERY sizeable dowry to her family in exchange for their blessing, and since she'd be marrying one of the Tobi Roppo they know she'll be living very well.

If she or her family refused, though...Jack won't take no for an answer. He'll simply return the next day, take ____ over his shoulder, and if she protests he'll threaten to have her family imprisoned with a life sentence for treason. In his mind she should be happy he's even leaving them alive after rejecting his generous offer.

If she and her family DO accept, he's very happy and makes sure his wife and in-laws are cared for. His wife would move in with him at Onigashima, and her family would never have to worry about anything financially ever again (and in Wano, that is a very rare blessing). He'll spoil his wife with all sorts of finery and anything she'd like, and he's also more affectionate than you may think when in public; he'll always have her on his shoulder or even on one of his tusks if he isn't carrying her bridal style, lol. And in private, he's such a teddy bear: nuzzling her neck and cheek with his fingers (he might hurt her with how wife and obtrusive his tusks are otherwise), holding her close while she lays on his chest, picking her up and lifting his mask to kiss her properly, etc.

King

King's described as a ruthless, cold-blooded, "torture-loving pervert", so catching his eye is NOT good. He doesn't express romantic interest the same way most people do, so his s/o may not even realize he has feelings for her. He tends to stare at her a lot but since he's completely covered by his suit, she probably doesn't even realize he's staring at her specifically. That's the closest he really gets to showing how he feels about her at this stage.

He'll skip the dowry and just arrive to her house to personally inform ____ that she's to pack her things and come with him so he can have her as his bride. If she resists or refuses, he just goes outside and kills the nearest person he sees before telling her that unless she wants to get another one of her neighbors killed, she'll do what he says and come with him.

If she agrees without any trouble and comes with him, he's a bit kinder (as much as he can be, lol) and orders his men to help move her things to his home. He also provides her family with a proper dowry as a wedding gift and makes sure his wife is well cared for in his home. Her wardrobe contains fine silks, jewelry made from jade and Sea Prism Stone, and he'd even give her gifts based off of what she likes or is interested in: books, plants, instruments, etc.

He gets more affectionate and open after the wedding as opposed to any time before it. The suit keeps him from kissing her directly most of the time (maybe he can take it off? We don't know much about his race so maybe he's stuck in there lol) so he prefers to put his covered mouth against hers or brush his fingers over her lips. He'll also embrace her with his wings whenever he hugs her, which he ONLY does in private--if someone sees the two of them being affectionate, they're lucky if they make it out alive.

13) September 15, 2017: Cassini - The Grand Finale - Sleeping At Last - OH MY GOD *VIBRATES INTO THE FIFTH DIMENSION*

Alright alright alright. Listen. This song is entirely instrumental. So why do I associate it with Four, you may ask?

WELLLLLLLL.

First of all, happy anniversary to the event this song was written about! Or-- well, it was the anniversary when this ask was sent djwhfkhjdewjhke. I took a while to answer it. BUT still. Happy anniversary!

Second of all, strap in cause I’m about to infodump the hell out of this song on my way to explaining my reasoning behind why I associate it with Four. It might seem irrelevant at first but trust me, I’ll get there.

(All the stuff I mention here is all explained in a much better fashion by the artist behind Sleeping At Last on his podcast episode about the song here. I'd absolutely recommend giving it a listen if you're interested!)

Cassini was written about a satellite with the same name that was built with the intention of exploring Saturn. On September 15, 2017, its journey was complete and its course was set to crash into Saturn in a brilliant grand finale. Hence the name of the song.

This song is a medley of four of Sleeping At Last’s songs, written as a mirror of the exact flight path of the Cassini satellite. (SAL has songs about each of the 9 planets + our moon.)

The song starts and ends with Saturn. The beginning is a chorus singing the tune of SAL's "Saturn" and the ending is that the song on the "Astronomy, Vol. 1" album leads straight into SAL’s "Saturn" to symbolize Cassini crashing into the planet. Cool, right?

After the opening the song crescendos with SAL’s "Earth" to represent Cassini’s launch. Cassini passed by Venus twice in its flight, so the part of the song immediately after that is from SAL's "Venus". The next part of the song (and ofc the next part of Cassini’s flight) is Jupiter! It’s very faint and distant since Cassini only passed by the planet. Aaand then finally it reaches Saturn.

Now what does any of this have to do with Four?

Welllllll, it's all a bit of a stretch but LET ME HAVE THIS hdgjhkjdwef.

I mentioned that Cassini is a medley of 4 different SAL songs.

Venus could easily be associated with Red! It’s a love song and love of course comes from the heart and all that. But it’s also a song that reflects wonder and awe and I feel like that’s a very Red feeling.

Jupiter is a song I associate a lot with Green, not only because of the song itself but also because of the planet and Green’s wind element. Jupiter is well-known for its storms! So it seems fitting for Green. Jupiter is one of the songs I have on my separate playlist for Green too. It has vibes of instinct and wanting to make things count and make a difference which I feel like fits him.

I feel like Saturn and Earth are interchangeable with Blue and Vio. I’d probably tentatively assign Blue to Earth and Vio to Saturn for now despite Earth being Vio’s element and me generally associating that song with him a lot more than Blue anyway. Saturn is a song about loss and trying to move on and I think Vio encompasses that feeling and experience. It’s very melancholy and slower-paced too, which fits Vio more. Whereas Earth is a very powerful, somewhat explosive song (which fits Blue’s vibe) about ignorance and possibly arrogance. ALSO if you go with Blue as Earth then it works even nicer because Earth and Venus are woven together very closely in Cassini. Which could represent how Blue & Red are both the "heart" of Four compared to Vio's mind and Green's instinct.

And ALL of these songs are packed into Cassini into a convenient little medley. Four songs blending seamlessly into one another creating a whole song that makes me want to throw my hands in the air and weep.

And how perfect that the day Steel sent this ask is coincidentally the anniversary of the day the song is about. jhkqdwfgehf. It was meant to be :>

I more or less watched The Boy!!! And by watching, I mean I skipped more or less through the jump scare parts because I cannot do horror movies at all. I haven’t watched one since 2015 and The Boy was like the first horror movie after five years

Full disclosure, the ONLY reason I started watching the movie was because someone posted a gif of Greta standing close to Brahms who was all sweaty and breathing heavily n I was like “oh shit who dat he hot” and here I am 

Can anyone explain the sandwich scene to me? So Greta was scared shitless and locked herself in her room, but why did Brahms make her favorite sandwich for her?

I did some digging for interviews and generally what people have been saying about the movie, took some screenshots from youtube to put my thoughts and musing together too!

So first of all, let’s start with a low resolution photo I found on IG of James Russell without mask:

which brings me to my first musing/thought/question? 

It’s all under the cut, very screenshot and text heavy, you can find more Brahms drawing at the bottom though  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So at the end of the movie, we are shown a Brahms with a broken mask and his face being burned, indicating that he was in fact in the fire.

I assumed first that the fire was created by the parents to fake their sons death and then he had to live hidden inside the walls? 

But I’ve also heard apparently it was Brahms who set the fire to fake his own death or maybe an eight years old kid really was trying to burn himself down?? 

My other theory is that his parents made the fire and tried to kill Brahms and it did burn him but he survived, and the parents didn’t wanna go to jail sooo to hide everything they made their son live in the walls

i mean the responsible thing would be to turn their kid in and have him treated and stuff;;; listened to a murder podcast about two cases where kids murdered enough kids and how they are doing now interesting read Brahms made me think of those two cases 

I also do not think that the previous nannies were killed. Like, c’mon. You’d report a person missing and sooner or later it would go back to the Heelshire mansion and if the body counts piles up? Can’t look good and I doubt that the Heelshire wants the police investigating them close up. 

Also, when the mom was like “He’s chosen you if you’ll have him” to Greta? Is it just me or the wording or does it sound like a marriage proposal/arrangement xD 

Brahms is a brat and he sees the people around him as his possession or to toy around. But I also do think that he has some abandonment issues but not in the sad tragic kind of way lmao. Even if he was the one controlling and manipulating his parents from behind-the-scene (quite literally I suppose?), he was still told as a kid to live in hiding and that no one can know he is alive. I don’t know much about the human brain, but I can imagine how damaging that must be to his mental growth and set him back in some way? We don’t know too much about his relationship with his parents - but I assume that he must have still loved them in his own twisted way. Can’t imagine that he would have been indifferent about his parents suicide. 

The scene before Greta manages to back out - first he uses the child voice to beg her to come back and promises he will be good. That’s his manipulating Greta, but when that doesn’t work and she tries harder to open the door, he becomes more desperate to keep her there and then completely loses his temper and threatens to kill Malcolm if she doesn’t return. I’m pretty sure homeboy would have killed him anyway. And then later when she returns and he is all heavy breathing and smelling her hair and then jumps up when she shouts Brahms? Idk I def think there is some sort of abandonment issue going on. 

I don’t think he is a child stuck in a man’s body or manchild or whatever. I think that he does know how to take care of himself - but he just chooses to manipulate people with the facade of a kid to do his bidding and cater to his needs. 

Anywhomst, but clearly Brahms is also a very manipulative and controlling person based, based on how the mother was reacting on the destroyed bedroom, she really seemed to be at the end of her wits and just breaking down with her “you promised you’d be good”. It was very heartbreaking to watch and also scary because it really makes you realize just how much power Brahms holds over them?? idk maybe it was just me.

Next point: the CGI mask  + the burns 

So according to some interviews with the director stated that at the first test streaming, people weren’t really scared of Brahms because he was too handsome so they had to slap a mask over his face. The face was done after everything was filmed. I’m thinking the face burns were also added post-production when they were adding the cgi mask. Otherwise, James would have needed to go through the makeup department for some wicked face burns and it would have been visible during the filming and test screening too? Which would imply that at first the fire was supposed to be just  a cover story that their son is dead and it was changed later

Observation/thoughts on Brahms Heelshire

Love how he stands there with his hands behind his back and then nods when Greta tells him to go under the cover

James Russell is 191cm tall. So like. Brahms is really fucking tall. But I notice that most of the time he stands with a slight hunch. Could be due to him crawling through the walls and crawling out of places that requires him to do a lot of crouching. His bed in his hideout made me really sad, I’ll get to it later. 

Since James didn’t get many lines in the ten minutes that he appeared, I do think that his eyes did all the acting. They stand out even more with the mask on, there is just this crazy look on it. I also noticed during my rewatch that he doesn’t seem to blink much or at all. 

Oh yeah, he also peeped on Greta and Malcolm making out on the bed and then cockblocked them. We been knowing that he made a Greta doll and very likely jerked off to it. We also been knowing that he very very very likely wanted to bone Greta at the goodnight kiss scene still waiting for the maskeless kiss scene gimme gimme. I also highly doubt that Brahms has much first-hand experience with kissing n stuff. High key thinking he was trying to do copy Malcolm and do what he observed lmao

When I first watched the scene, I assumed that the hole behind the mirror has always been and it’s just another one of the hidden passages Brahms to slip in and out, but now that I’m looking at the shape of the holes, it seems to me more like the mirror and brick wall were broken at the same time?? If that is the case holy shit boy is s t  r o n g. I mean, he also punched through the closet door like no big deal so really what have the parents been feeding him. 

I’m also leaning toward the fact that he ran there because Greta screamed loudly. I don’t think he was in the room as them when everything went down there, it seemed more like he heard the scream and had to nyoomed over and then punched a way through to get out of the wall. And then went on to attack Cole. He must have known that Greta wanted Cole gone, since that what she whispered to the doll before going to bed. 

Tbh, I fully expected him to murder Cole in his sleep, but Brahms wrote a warning message in blood to tell him to get out soooooo like. Cole you were warned and now you gotta live with the consequences ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Brahm’s sleeping corner

This scene was shown at the end after Greta and Malcolm escaped. We also see them briefly during the part where Greta and Malcolm are trying to find a way out and stumbled into Brahms’ hideout. I’m not sure why the rules are slapped on the walls. It seems to me that Brahms is very very very set on that the rules / routine should be followed. In the movie, he called Greta and suggested to her that she should follow the rules, to which she then started doing it.

I headcanon that that’s the routine that he grew up with as a kid and it’s just very very very very very hard to break out of it - not that he is trying to break the routine. 

I’m failing to find a good way to put my thoughts into words, but I guess the rules and routine is sort of his coping mechanism? 

I suppose if you had an OC that you ship Brahms with and want to change stuff around the house, the OC would have to very slowly introduce new rules and routines. Baby steps, yknow.

Brahms has a violin hanging there! Honestly I would be surprised if Brahms didn’t know how to play at least one instrument. The family also has an old ass piano/clavichord (?) and Brahms loves classical music soo yeah. Love me a boy who appreciates classical musical hehe

I suppose the egg boxes are there to soundproof the room more - maybe so he can play the violin? 

There’s also music sheets hung around his attics, it’s not clear on the screenshots but when you rewatch the scene and shove your face close to the screen. Some are hanging next to the violin and there are some taped on the wall next to his bed and porn too

nice to see he has a fridge and microwave, I was concerned that he wasn’t well fed and that leftovers might not be enough, but then again. Dude is 191 cm so clearly he has been drinking his milk

Didn’t take a screenshot of his vanity, but there is a crocodile magnet stuck to the mirror hehe. I do think that he shaves and stuff, otherwise his beard would be much longer??

We can see more music sheets stuck to a pillar on the right. 

Loving the christmas lights that he has hanging there above his bed. It’s cute. 

On the shelf he has a bunch of tupperware and empty bowls. Most of hte things are neatly organized. We can also see some books and a pen

There’s some sunlight streaming inside - I do hope that Brahmsy stays warm during winters.

Here we can see more of the food that he has there - there is also a sink but I didn’t snatch a screenshot of it. I think those are potatoes in the pot? Maybe he does know how to cook some basic stuff, I do wonder if he has a functioning kitchen up there. Probably not for fire safety reasons lol

He got a few potted plants up there. Took a closer look at them and it seems like they were healthy. So he knows how to take care of plants, which is nice to know I suppose?

Yes, we all know what he was doing with the doll and what the tissue balled up tissue implies. However, has anyone noticed the size of the bed??? 

If you scroll up a bit to the screenshot of Greta seeing the doll, it looks t i n y. The make shift doll takes up more than half of the space. 

Yall. this breaks my heart. Dude is a beanstalk. I’m pretty sure the bed is from when he was a kid shoved by his parents to live inside the wall, does he have to sleep there in his adulthood too??? 

Even though Brahms strikes me as someone who probably doesn’t sleep much or during normal times, that bed must be so tiny for him. He must be sleeping with his knees bend and shit unable to stretch out :((( 

Brahms: is a psychopath that smashed the skull of a girl and very abusive tormented his parents and then Greta Me: omg he needs a bigger bed that poor thing :(((

Brahms’ DIY corner

Homeboy got lot of animal traps, cages and taxidermies hanging around, pointing strongly toward that it’s a hobby of it? 

Also at the end where we see him fixing up the doll, we can get a better shot at his desk, and I gotta say the threads and stuff are all very nicely organized. Brahms’s table looks more organized than mine does lmao. 

So we know he is a crafty boy. Not sure how difficult taxidermy is but I imagine it does take a lot of time to learn? Well he had all the time in the world anyway.

oh, a fellow starved c!tubbo enthusiast. hello there, i do have some headcannons to spare luckily, hope you enjoy!! mostly this is the dissociation ones but i have some miscellaneous ones & songs at the end for you :]

so obviously uhhh tw for dissociation/depersonalisation/derealisation in this post!!! also going to put them under the cut bc this is long lmao

oh and disclaimer: this is very much based off my own experiences with (near constant) chronic dissociation so it might be different from other experiences!! yeah.

oh ALSO this is disorganized and probably missing stuff because i am going through a bad bout of spaciness as of right now, so apologies if anything is confusing, feel free to ask for clarification!

idk background timeline stuff so it fits into the story

at first he didn’t even realize he felt disconnected from things. it started off as a coping mechanism during combat and felt so similar to the feeling of being “in the zone” he’d known before that he didn’t question it

after a bit, it spread from only being there during battle to during conflict in general. still, he didn’t mind it—it actually made arguments more bearable because they felt almost secondhand.

eventually he came to use it as a crutch so much that it became constant.

that was when he started wanting it to go away.

and then because i can’t bear to give my precious c!tubbo constant dissociation he probably gets breaks from it sometimes idk lmao

his experiences:

gaps in memory

auditory processing issues

lots of depersonalisation and not recognizing himself in the mirror (which is even more fun/terrifying if you add in shapeshifter headcannons)

a lot of the time he feels like his actions aren’t his, which helped him to feel less bad doing morally ambiguous things (spying, exiling tommy, hunting technoblade, etc)

after it all he was left with near constant dissociation almost all the time.

it nearly always feels like the world is secondhand to him and he has no control/impact (ironic considering the power he has, and he knows that, but)

often wonders if he is dreaming and just waiting to wake up from a coma he’d gotten from one of his many battles.

when things get really bad he wishes he could just wake up from it.

often doesn’t recognize his hands looking down at them, especially with the burns he has now. they’re not his hands, right? but they are. they’re his hands. huh.

uhhh examples of where it could have been shown in plot if you squint lol

for example, that famous clip of him dancing while wilbur and tommy argue in the background would be a physical representation of him zoning out (dissociating) to get out of/away from an argument.

the whole yes man thing could have either been an auditory processing issue where he replied yes to wilbur without hearing what wilbur had asked OR a gap in memory where he didn’t remember telling tommy the opposite

he pulled away for like 5 months into snowchester and talked to hardly anyone but his husband and son. dissociation is hard to interact with people during because you feel so isolated for so many reasons—sometimes you feel you’re the only real thing there, sometimes it feels there’s a glass wall between you and everything else that IS real. and even ignoring that, most people can’t relate to feeling that way, leaving you even more alone. he could have pulled away because it was too much too keep going through that (i did that don’t recommend it tubbo JSJD)

miscellaneous headcannons that i don’t see very often:

after winning a battle, his instinct is to play a disc and look out at the sunset because that’s what he and tommy always did (see his lore yesterday (june 18th)—he did it with ranboo despite tommy not being there)

i’m rather fond of my original-l’manberg-citizens-consider-haircuts-and-fixing-up-appearances-affectionate-because-wilbur-did-it headcannon so i’ll add that here—basically wilbur gave everyone military cuts and new suits and everything. and while that was just for war, it was also because he cared about all of them. ever since, they all considered fixing up someone’s appearance an act of love.

tubbo refused to let anyone cut his hair after the red festival, not trusting anyone. he would probably let ranboo do it now, only he’s rather attached to the way it hides his burns and some of his horns and keeps him warm in the freezing snow.

he builds walls like how tommy builds cobblestone towers—a reflex, a coping mechanism, a habit. he built the l’manberg walls and ever since the defense has been second nature, whether for the best or the worst.

ive been waiting forever to share these i have way too many. i pass the hours staring out the window listening to misterwives and imagining c!tubbo animatics to it and now i have a chance to share them oh my god

Since I recent finished both games I've just gone all of your Hollow Knight and Hat in Time art and I just want to say that it gives me life??? Like seriously I don't see too much for those games and it's great to find someone who enjoys both!! And since we're on the topic, what are your favourite parts of both games??

I’m glad you enjoyed them!! Both are incredible games so I’m glad I could provide content for you to browse now that you’ve finished them! As for my favorite parts.... well excuse me I might start gushing a bit lol:

For Hollow Knight it would have to be.. it’s entire world!!! And how it’s presented in the game!!!!Seriously I CANNOT get over how good this game is at putting you inside Hallownest! The lore! The characters! The music! The ambiance! All the little details that end up intricately connecting to each other to tell this complicated story about how this kingdom fell and what happened to its inhabitants! The world of this game alone leaves me wanting more! Like for example, all the backgrounds in this game are fantastic, and like since it’s not just the same bg scrolling by and stuff, if you look there’s stuff that suggests that there’s a lot more going on out there! I remember entering the City of Tears for the first time and when you’re in that big building and the piano is building up and with the rain in the background, and then once you get outside the instrumentals and vocals kick in as you’re walking through this huge city stuck in an endless downpour of rain! It’s wonderful! If there was one game I wish I could experience for the first time all over again, it would HANDS DOWN be Hollow Knight purely because of how good the world building is. It makes me wanna know what’s beyond Hallownest, what a bug kingdom that hasn’t fallen looks like! Which is why I’m endlessly excited for what their upcoming sequel has to bring to the table. But yeah, Hollow Knight is just... I can’t sing enough praises for this game, it’s a work of art. This ramble is the tip of the iceberg for how much admiration I have for this game!

As for A Hat in Time.... ok this is probably no surprise at all but I just love everything about Subcon, like not only is the whole spooky forest thing filled with shadowy ghost creatures an absolute Aesthetic, it just seems like the most developed area? Like it’s so explorable but not too big to where it’s kind of intimidating like the alpines and it even has little details scattered about the area that tell the story of the place as well! And if you remember my HK ramble up there, I live for that shit (though that is still very much present in the other worlds as well, now that I think about it, idk Subcon just vibes with me more lol). And especially knowing all the cut content with Moonjumper and Shane Frost’s original ideas for the lore in the earlier versions, it’s just like... they give me enough to work with in regards to dropping my own ideas in, which I personally appreciate very deeply >:3. Other than that, just the general wackiness of AHiT is wonderful, the premise is ridiculous, the characters and situations of each world even more so, I love how cartoony it is! When making content for Hollow Knight I felt like I had to hold myself back with going too silly with the comedy or else it would conflict with that game’s general vibe (which still didn’t entirely stop me, as you can probably see, but know that I did try to have some restraint in regards to that lmao. Definitely felt more comfortable going in more angsty with HK.) but with this game I just go batshit with expressions and reactions and dialogue in my fan art, even when doing the more serious comics and drawings and I don’t feel l guilty when i do because AHiT is just ridiculous, I love it.

on the confession scene (lazy person’s shot by shot)

i can’t be the only who’s immersion was broken halfway through this scene because of some editing/blocking choices that i can’t stop thinking about. its just.... weird

disclaimer: i know this probably bothered me more than most people lmao this is just an analysis bc i can’t stop thinking about it. why do we get thrown into the next dimension in the middle of the scene

in my eyes the scene had two major flaws - the editing and the blocking (or staging). this scene has several strange cuts, but i feel the choppy editing was made in attempt to patch together shots are don’t blend well into one another. there’s little an editor can do if the footage they receive is staged with a lack of spacial awareness.

the way the scene is initially set up is very standard for a two person conversation: shot of cas over dean’s shoulder, reverse shot of dean over cas’s shoulder, move closer as we sink deeper into the dialogue. the other character’s shoulders sinks out of frame as we get closer to the characters. this is cas’s scene, but i’d argue from dean’s perspective. (the revelation is to both dean and the audience.) in close-ups, cas occupies the entire frame - he has dean’s complete attention.

blocking in the beginning of the conversation in a conventional shot reverse-shot set up. we move between alternating shots of talking characters from the same side of the line of action to maintain continuity.

dean and cas are our main players and make up the scene’s line of action, which splits the scene down the middle. in continuity editing (and this is pretty conventional network television) cameras are supposed to remain on one side of the line. think of it like the front of the stage, the vantage point from where the audience views the scene. in this style of editing, you’re generally not supposed to break it and certainly not without thought. this is the style most people are used to, so it makes visual media more comprehensible. it makes a lot more sense, from an audience perspective, if the character on the left (dean) is always on the left.

before the meat of the scene, there’s a tight medium shot of both of them after cas says “daddy’s blunt instrument.” we know where dean and cas are, and how far apart they are. shot reverse-shot dialogue continues.

angle of medium tight-shot establishing where dean and cas are before close ups begin. camera is on the same side of the line of action, positioned slightly behind dean. 

the empty is summoned - on the line of action. we get this from cas’s angle, and then dean’s reaction. billie breaks down the door (which is also on the line of action) and it’s not a flat shot - we’re still on the same side of the action.

then, cas puts his bloodied left hand on dean’s right shoulder - first of all, it looks like he’s going to use that hand to push dean. it’s a character driven choice - it’s very nice. i like the callback. the camera slides with cas’s hand movement as he puts it on dean’s shoulder, so it’s what we’re all looking at. and then he shoves dean towards the audience.

this is the point where, for me, the immersion broke. this is a match-on-action - there’s a cut in the middle of a movement that is completed in the next shot. most of the time, it’s done it two shots, but in this instance its done it three.

we watch cas push dean in three very confusing shots that lack spacial awareness. following the medium hand shot there is a close-up of cas saying “goodbye, dean,” and then (1) a shot from behind cas where dean is pushed left out of the frame, (2) a shot in front of cas completing the push, dean still falling to the left, and (3) dean falling to the floor out of the left side of the frame from a lower, downward angle. the line of action now moves diagonally through the room, and we’re on the opposite side of it.

firstly, these shots happen very abruptly and are super jarring for the viewer. because we are no on the other side of the line of action, the scene has not established the part of room dean gets thrown into because it hasn’t needed to, and no he could have just fallen over or slid ten feet. (temporally, it feels like there’s a chunk of his fall missing as well - he’s getting pushed, and then he’s on the floor.)

secondly, because we’ve crossed the line of action, dean, who has been on the left for the entire scene and has twice fallen out of the left side of the frame, barrels in from the left side of the frame towards the right. this shot is a complete 180 from the medium shot of them that established space in the middle of the conversation. it defies convention, which draws the audience’s attention and pulls you away from the scene. (continuity editing is designed to not attract attention to itself and slide beyond the viewer’s notice.)

in summary, we’ve been spun all the way around in three very quick shots into a part of the room we don’t know.

original shot reverse-shot set up and dean’s new position, in a part of the room that’s not been established.

my first thought is that this has something to do with the fact that supernatural is an “action” series. action sequences are typically cut together with low shot lengths to keep the pace of the scene high and so the audience doesn’t have time to pick apart the stunt work as much. it works for action sequences, because that’s what we expect, but the quick cuts look super weird in a scene focused on dialogue and character.

the rest of the scene is more or less fine. cas and dean look at each other in a sequence of eyeline matches which work (these actually help us figure out where dean is - we know where cas is, and we know which direction he’s looking, so we know where dean is). billie dies from the same angle she’s introduced. two shots take place on the original line of action between cas and dean, and there’s a shot of cas at an angle (jumping around a bit again, but it’s okay - it’s only dean’s shots that are facing the other direction). there is another shot from behind dean and several reaction shots of dean looking through everything that’s happening, and, by then we’ve gotten our bearings as to where everything in the room is.

tldr; dean seriously should’ve just been pushed the other direction
