Love and Bounties (Scene)

A/N: I'm suffering MAJOR writers block, so scrolling through Pinterest and saw a collection of images that gave me an idea. I just wanna write several fics with themes of characters/reader being just as protective of Logan as he is for them! (Clint Eastwood reminds me of Logan/Hugh Jackman..) Logans not actually in this scene...Sorry!

Summary: She has to defend someone very precious to her, from a group of men who will stop at nothing for revenge.

She watched as a group of men began to approach the home. All of them rugged, dressed as bounty hunters and cowboys, with heavy coats and boots with spurs. Men who don’t belong to homes or hearts, and let the cruelty of the world harden their souls as they commit their own lives to being a pain in the ass and making everyone else's lives harder. 

Mags was sitting upon a wooden rocking chair, dressed in a pretty and lacey off the shoulder dress that hugged her waist. She leaned back against the arm of the chair, and she had her legs spread in the most unladylike manner; with one leg bent over the arm of the chair, and the other foot slowly pushing the ground, rocking her in the chair, creating a rhythmic croak each time she leaned back and forth. She had on arm lazily resting ontop her knee, while the other was holding into the barrel of a Winchester, the gun laying across her lap, the butt of it pressed to the ground of the wooden porch. 

She held a cigar loosely between her painted lips, rolling it with her tongue. She didn’t really necessarily like smoking, but she liked the taste of the cigars, something relatively new she learned about herself. Her hair was pulled up messily in a bun, large blonde curls hung and framed around her face. Her expression was casual, and observant as she watched the men approach. 

One of them stopped, presumed leader of the small group, holding his hand up to the others. His face was aged by his sins, long graying hairs pulled back in a bun. Not really a charmer. 

“Greetings, lil lady.” He called out, a heavy southern draw in his voice. “Fine evening ain’t it?”

“Sure is.” She respond, lifting her head up at she stared down at them, ceasing her rocking in the chair. She lifted her hand, removing the cigar from her lips, the tip now stained with red lipstick, as she set it on the crate next to her.

“Now I don’t mean to uh…impose on a beautiful young lady like yourself, but I believe you got something- someone we want.” 

She raised a brow. “I think I do…. You’re not going to get it though.” She says cooly, tipping her head to the side. A challenge in her expression. A quirk of her lips in a smile as she awaits his response. He scoffed, looking at the men standing on either side of him, some amused, some annoyed. 

“I wasn’t asking darling.” He says. “Now you either let us in and grab him, and we leave all peaceful-like. Or we going to come in…and take you both. By force.” He threatens, his voice turning dark and low towards the end. She grins. 

“Really?” She says. “That sounds like it’d be fun. You are not going to do that though. Not with me.” 

“You? You gonna stop us?” He asks. He looked at the others again, all them now amused. “Little girl like you? All alone?” 

She hummed. She lifted the Winchester up into her arms, acting as if she was admiring it, as her hands took the proper places to hold a gun, a finger resting gently over the trigger, while her other hand ran down the underarm of the gun. She glanced upwards, at the group of men. 

“Who says I’m alone?” She asks, she pulled the lever of the shotgun, cocking it into place, in display of dominance, showing them that she was armed, and ready.

“I ain’t see anyone else?” He says, arms stretching out as he glanced around the land. It was seemingly empty, the fields, the trees. He didn’t detect other presences around them. She smiled. “There ain’t anybody here but you; and Howlett.” 

“Why don’t you come up and find out then?” 

He frowned. The lady could be bluffing. Way to get them to go away. Though she was armed, and he knew none of his boys would be willing to lay down their lives just to get ahold of Logan Howlett. Yet. Call his losses now. Come back later, more prepared, with more men- more than who could be hiding in that house. This wasn’t about money to him anymore, it was about getting even. He looked to his right, Denver looking at him, small nod of his head- reading his mind and agreeing with his plan. 

“Alright darling.” He smiles, a cocky arrogance about his tone. “We’ll stop by later.” 

She raises her chin, watching as they all turned and began walking away. She stood from the rocking chair, placing the gun at her side like a cane, hand on her hip as she watched the men walk away. Clicking her tongue and shaking her head. She was going to have to think of something to do, soon.

The fact people haven't pointed how weird Hu's entire behavior is in the latest episode is wild to me, like genuinely.

As soon as her weapon is mentioned, she goes completely silent and looks terrified.

Then Teruko asks her "what lie did Nico tell you to get a hold of that" and she doesn't respond. In fact she sounds confused and let's out a

"...What" As though she's confused that was the conclusion Teruko had made

In fact she doesn't even says a singular full sentence about it. No questioning Nico, no giving us context as to how Nico would've even gotten the weapon in the first place, no reaction from Hu to the idea that Nico would've tried to frame her and the fact they admit to it right in front of her.

This is the women who acted shocked and entered a blind rage when she learned that David betrayed her, blaming him for "toying with her heart".

Even if she would treat Nico different from David, I don't fucking buy the idea that she'd have 0 reaction to that. No tearful reaction of betrayal ? No breakdown.

Somehow here she says nothing, acting confused and then just sheepishly adding a "That's..." when the conversation moves further.

That moment is still stuck in my mind because it is such a strange moment especially with how we've established Hu's behavior during the entire trial.

We literally see how she reacts to being betrayed, we've seen it in this class trial, and yet someone even closer to her admits to framing her and it's just...crickets.

this is old discourse but I do think it's interesting how so much of the analysis of class in the show the fandom does is purely based on aesthetic and what people associate with being blue collar or working class which is why you'll have fans who think dean and sam are somehow in different social classes despite being raised the same and living in the same situation though most of the show. bc beer and burgers and cars are what hardworking poor people like and listening to celine dion is what rich people do. and no sam having three years of a college education with no degree does not change that in any meaningful way.

Would Buddy hurt anyone? Why was Buddy shocked when he hurt Chase with the spear? AND WHY THE COMPLETE DIFFERENCE WITH THE SPEAR AND DEACON WITH THE WOLVES?!?

I GET TO TALK ABOUT BUDDY AND DEACON. AHAHA.

Thank you for the Q <3 I love and respect you, but I am going to bypass the first two questions because I am filled with thoughts on Buddy and Deacon's dynamic. Because I don't know if more people noticed (I'm 100% sure others have noticed) but Buddy and Deacon absolutely parallel each other.

What's Buddy's big motivator, as established by the Dreams By Night episode? To escape Ex Libris. To be free, essentially.

What's Deacon's big motivator, as established by The Book of Deacon? To lead his own story, without his parents controlling everything. To be free, essentially.

Buddy, from the beginning, harps on Chase's lack of preparation. Deacon, from the beginning, gripes about Chase's lack of preparation. Deacon over-prepares, to the point where Chase asks him what different scenes mean and what happens in the story. Something he used to do with Buddy, because both Deacon and Buddy indulge Chase in their explanations.

Deacon gets caught off-guard by Chase's perceptiveness, and Buddy gets caught off-guard by Chase's personality. And Chase might gripe about both, sure, but often about superficial, irrelevant details. Complaining about Deacon always being busy, or complaining about Buddy being pretentious. (Not about things of substance, like Deacon having enough money to attend college AND disliking the experience, or about not even knowing Buddy's name.)

We all laugh about Buddy being paranoid, but Deacon matches him pretty well. Deacon isn't spilling any names. Deacon, like Buddy, understands the necessity for secrets. Who makes the plans to hide Prunella? Who keeps telling Chase not to talk to Buddy about her?

(A thought for another time, but--something about kids of strict parents being sneakier, and something about Deacon always convincing Chase into keeping secrets.)

Deacon's being reasonable, and we know that, because we're listening to his reasoning, and his reasoning is nothing like Buddy's. (Buddy's all "EVERYONE is out for themself," while Deacon is a lot more subtly judging the shirtless Hot Topic wanna-be.) But their ACTIONS match each other.

Are they the same character? lmao absolutely not. They have different experiences, different mentalities, different perspectives. Deacon has a support system, whether financial (parents) or emotional (Bronze) or even social (Chase). Buddy has a bright eyed, stubborn kid who sees a vampire and somehow therapizes him, and sees someone covered in thorns and reciprocates their hug because he knows it was needed.

But how similar they are really shines in the Requiem arc. Deacon and Buddy match the other's barbs seemlessly, and they call out the other with ease. Deacon insults Buddy's fashion sense + teeth, Buddy tricks Deacon into nearly getting mauled by wolves, which is probably an escalation, and Deacon immediately starts plotting a revenge. "When I get my hands on him," he outright says, implying some retaliation, and yet he sees Buddy and Chase wrestling a vampire to the ground and immediately asks "What're we doing?"

He immediately joins them. He has no idea what they're doing or why they're doing it, but they're doing it, so he alas has to ascribe to it. And then you remember that Chase is the one who jumped Vamp, and Buddy ALSO has no idea what they're doing or why they're doing it, but Chase's doing it, so he alas has to ascribe.

They get each other, is what I'm saying. They're foils in methods (Deacon annoys Buddy verbally, Buddy annoys Deacon physically////Deacon chooses to maintain peace via secrecy, Buddy prefers honest communication despite the impacts/////etc etc etc) but they're mirroring the other. They're two beams of light, coming from the same source, going in completely opposite directions.

Buddy hurting Chase risked everything Buddy had gained, all the trust and the companionship and the grossly genuine friendship he gained. The physical pain risked ripping the emotional connection between them. Buddy hurting Deacon DOESN'T rip open anything, because however far Buddy takes things, Deacon's prepared to follow out of annoyance and spite alone. They have the same priorities: keep themselves (+ Chase/others) safe, and humble the other when necessary.

And Buddy has an embarrassing crush or something. everyone point at the idiot and laugh

It's just such a thing in my mind because it adds a truthful sadness and differing aspect to mouthwashing.

If Curly was trans it adds the horror of the horribly selfish thought he could have easily been in Anya's situation. It could've been him but it wasn't and he so conflicted on the pit it put in his stomach that brings and the shameful relief it wasn't. In this scenario he is friends with Jimmy for a long time still. Jimmy likely knew him pretransition. Maybe he gave Curly weird looks then, maybe they never stopped after, maybe they seemed meaner. They are guys now, bros, both of them are. He doesn't really have to worry what those looks mean anymore, Jimmy just has that face with him sometimes. It's recontextualizing a lot of things for him that he was in denial about or too ashamed to admit. How naive he was being and how he let that get another person hurt.

Specifically with Anya, it's he knows the dread and fear she's feeling. He can understand it because he had to live with it for a good portion of his life, he knows it cause he still does, just in a slightly different way. It makes him think of all the times he's been alone with Jimmy, all the times he's been way more drunk off his ass and not remember the night, Jimmy was always with him the next day. Makes him think of the comments he would laugh off both because that's what guys do but because that part of being a girl says to laugh so Jimmy doesn't do something. It's the selfish realization that he was never safe and he's uncertain now too. Mad at himself for forgeting that feeling, espcially since for a long time he would've been considered the only woman on a crew (with all that implies) for a long time.

He should've taken those blinders off, step back into that position for just a moment and it's so much more painful that Anya likely came to him because he should've gotten it. Those thoughts don't leave his mind after the crash when he's in an even more vulnerable position than she was...
