it's not even that i'm uninspired really, it's just a bit of intimidation-based procrastination mixed with capitalism stealing at least 40 hours of my life every week. and then by the time i do social things run errands clean my house and rest a bit it's fucking monday again and like hOW DO PEOPLE FIND THE TIME TO EVER DO ANYTHING

How do you manage to write smut that's like, actually arousing? What's the secret?

Well, first of all thank you! I'm glad you enjoy it, I really am. Happy to hear from you here as well 💜

Also, I'll let you in on my secret — I can't stand almost anything I write after it's posted. I see nothing but the flaws, grammatical choices, and technical foibles. This extends triple, quadruple, to smut. So if you're feeling the same kinda way, that your writing feels somehow off, then just know you're not alone.

I could give some pointers, but I don't really know how much benefit anyone will get hearing these from me of all people. But in my opinion it's a lot of the non-smut aspects that highlight the smut and make it shine. So here ya go.

Keep it in-character. I'm not out here talking as an authority on anyone's characterization, nor am I saying I'm some master of it and there are plenty of people out there with differing opinions, so take this with a colossal mountain of salt. But you should focus on making the voices, internal thoughts, and prose in keeping with the POV character. This is something called "POV control" and it's a very useful skill. Be able to flow in and out of a character's POV as the need arises. How Shadowheart interacts with sex is very different from Karlach is different from Orin, for example.

Strong focus on dialogue. This is a sorta addendum to the first point. Characters shouldn't suddenly turn silent when they're having sex. That is, unless that's the point of the story! They should also be speaking in-character even (or especially) during sex. Also, "porn dialogue" is something that gets brought up a lot in writing, and I think we all know it when we read it. That being said, people in the real world do say things during sex that, out of context, are hilarious. So it's a balancing act.

Fitting descriptions. This is actually one of the more important ones! If a scene is very romantic and meant to be light and fluffy, maybe avoid words for genitals altogether and focus entirely on simple visual aesthetics (how moonlight plays on a body, to give an example). If it's meant to be rough and focused on bodies or the mechanics of the scene, ham it up on those words. This also isn't a binary. Things flow back and forth all the time.

Firm language. I don't mean, like, power dynamics "firm." I'm talking about a willingness to use the words that fit the descriptions and sticking to it. Some people despise certain words, but other people will find the alternatives hilarious and completely tone-breaking. Find the words you like and stick to them; consistency gives your voice strength.

Don't try to appease everybody. You just can't. You have to write what you personally enjoy reading/writing/doing/thinking about, and go with it. If you try to cater to everyone's whims with any of the above, you'll wind up with a beige platter of nothingness. That doesn't mean you can't explore other tones or flavors, but don't try to do too much in one story.

Focus on emotions. Emotions could mean anything from love to lust to anxiety to fear to uncertainty and so on and so forth. My strategy is to center a fic on a theme/emotion that resonates with the characters involved and then I explore the smut around that central point. Revisit the idea between the action. Show how the characters' feelings around the theme change or how they're reaffirmed.

my main concern about this is that the author of the novel publicly stated that her story was inspired by a very specific kinnporsche's actor and that he was the only actor she wanted for one of the main roles, to the point that the company did actually reach out to him, which i do think it’s.. a Choice, considering everything that happened with him…...

honestly i don't wanna start any kind of discourse, but i AM a bit wary of this project, so we'll see!!

WIP Wednesday

Was tagged by the lovely Harding 💜 for this. And here's a WIP of fic 3 of Vanquish/Voss where they finally meet Raphael.

This fic is going agonisingly slow for some reason. I want it to be Really Good as it has some really nice scenes and poignant moments, but a lot of dialogue which is my weakness and a few new chars I've never written before which scare me so it's uh, going lol.

Korilla looks up. Winks at Karlach. “Hey dynamite. Long time no see.”

Karlach throws up a middle finger. Scoffs. “Wish it was longer.”

“Be seeing you again very soon, I hope.”

Vanquish listens between her words, peering for a clue before she’s toe to toe with Raphael again. Voss said he’d found a way to free Orpheus, and it had to be Raphael. She pushes off the railing, one foot on the bottom step. “He can talk all he wants. I’m not signing shit.”

“You sure? It’s not all about that ticking clock in your head.” Leans against the bar as she watches Vanquish walk up the stairs. Slow, purpose. “This fight isn't just about Baldur's Gate, or the Sword Coast, or even Faerûn.” Vanquish pauses at the landing, looks over her shoulder and down. “If the brain wins, the Illithid Empire wins. You’ll lose far more than that pretty face.” Another half-smile. “And that Kith’rak.”

Another flick of her tail. “Like Raphael gives a shit beyond his own arse.”

“No world, no souls. And what’s a devil’s life without souls. I also hear illithids make terrible clients.” Her eyes flick to the satchel at Vanquish’s side before she takes another drink. “And allies.”

Vanquish feels something nudge her mind, like the shape of a smirk to skin, the reminder I’m here, I listen.

Lae’zel and Gale join her, Gale muttering under his breath about ‘was that my old professor? No. Ludicrous’. Lae’zel’s eyes curious as she observes Korilla, feeling something off with her. Like the strangeness she feels pulse off Wyll, when she touches Vanquish’s skin.

“See you soon,” says Korilla to Vanquish’s silence, her back as she leaves.

“Fucking hope not,” Vanquish hears Karlach mutter ahead.

I'm sorry cause I have no idea if you already talked about it or if you'd even like to but I'm so in love obsessed with your 100 shows for js and I'm just back from watching titanic so please tell me there's a titanic au anywhere in there cause palakdjufcyhfudjsnapsifhvuvhsk I need it. Jimmy as the rich heir that has to board a ship so he may inherit his father's millions and marry a stranger. who feels trapped and hopeless and sea (I mean come in the NAME ALONE -) who's on the ship by sheer dumb luck with maybe 2 pennies to his name and charcoal on his fingertips and shows Jimmy what it means to be alive and 2 days into the journey the ship fucking sinks. IM INSANE ABOUT IT

(maybe mostly as an excuse to put sea into the white shirt and suspenders look this time around but shhhhhh no one has to know)

I DO NOT HAVE A TITANIC AU IN MY 100 JIMMYSEA SERIES LIST (YET) BUT MAYBE I ACTUALLY NEED TO COME UP WITH AN IDEA FOR IT BECAUSE YOU DO MAKE SOME VERY COMPELLING ARGUMENTS

i've also really been wanting to have a story featuring sea as a painter, so this could fit quite nicely!!!! my only concern about this is that i don't want to just replicate the exact same plot as the movie, i want to try to put a different spin on it, which in this particular case probably means changing the ending because i simply cannot do tragedies IM SORRY OKAY I REALLY AM BUT WE ONLY DO HAPPY ENDINGS IN THIS HOUSE

and i might have an idea for this, but im afraid it's possibly way too overdramatic and kinda soap oper-y, so im gonna need you to be brutally honest and tell me what you think about it

the premise is pretty much the same: it's around the 1920s, and as an only son, jimmy is supposed to inherit the family’s land and marry well, so his father arranges a marriage between him and the daughter of a wealthy english man for trade purposes or something like that. after the wedding the pairing is supposed to live in thailand, so the families agree to travel together to england before the ceremony to.. idk experience both cultures? let the daughter see her country one last time and say goodbye to it? let's say both. on the ship board jimmy, both of his parents with a couple of servants, the woman he's supposed to marry, her brother, and her father

neither jimmy or his future wife are particularly happy about the arrangement, but jimmy is willing to do it because of his sense of duty. it's not like he believes in love, anyway. enter sea, a broke artist who decides to try his luck in england after winning a ticket for the ship. the story does follow the movie from here on out, although i can't see jimmy and sea meeting in the way rose and jack do, just because im imagining a different dynamic between them (as in, i think that they would dislike each other at first and that they would bicker a lot because of their different worldviews, but that's what keeps pulling them in)

ANYWAY. the point is: they meet, they eventually fall in love (it's a long journey from thailand to england, so let's say the sinking doesn't happen after only two days), the brother of the woman jimmy is supposed to marry realizes that there's something between them and tries to frame sea for theft, the ship hits.. SOMETHING (is there a place where there could be icebergs in that route idk), the ship sinks, jimmy comes out of it convinced that sea is dead so he goes on with the marriage, mostly out of guilt because jimmy's father also died

EXCEPT!!!!!!! some years later, after jimmy and her wife finally have a daughter, as a present for the newborn one of their friends hires one of thailand most famous artists to paint a portrait of the family, AND GUESS WHO THAT IS!!!!!!!!! that's right, it's sea!!!!!! he actually survived and did try to find jimmy after recovering, but jimmy was already married by then and the wife's brother saw him and convinced him to let jimmy go for jimmy's own good

so now it's a big mess because jimmy resents sea (first because he thinks sea didn't try to find him, then because sea made the choice for him), and sea resents jimmy (for marrying anyway even if it was all fake), and they're both pretending they have moved on when it's very much not true. and in my head there's also a whole thing about the wife's brother inheriting the family's fortune and splurging it all, so he's actually living on his sister and jimmy's money, which is why he needs them to be together (but his sister is also maybe in love with her handmaid)

ALL THIS TO SAY THAT THE STORY ENDS WITH JIMMYSEA + JIMMY'S WIFE AND HER HANDMAIDEN TOGETHER AND THE FOUR OF THEM BECOMING A BIG FAMILY AND RAISING THE CHILD WHILE THE BROTHER ROTS IN JAIL OKAY BYE

I can't say they're in the works as in 'I am actively drawing one right now'; I did attempt to draw one of my comic scripts back in january, but I wasn't happy with how any of the panels were turning out and had to switch gears just to get something drawn that month 💔

but after I'm done with this year's SoriWeek, my plan is to try my very best to get more than one Swap MH comic drawn before the year ends! can't promise life won't get in the way of that somehow, but that's the goal at least :'>
