Oculus: *doing a threat display @ Elias*

Elias has a huge soft spot for this Creature after enjoying its companionship for 200 years. It’s traditionally the companion of the Archivist and has been since the time of Alexandria, but the thing is fond of him too. It gets lonely, losing its Archivist every couple decades, and Elias is its longest lived friend. Also, Gertrude spent the last 50 years rejecting it :( She kicked it out of the Archives and refused to have anything to do with it, so it sulked in Elias’s office for a couple decades.

Elias got used to having it around. Then Jon came along and suddenly Elias is yesterday’s news. Elias can understand the appeal for Oculus — finally, an Archivist that loves it back after being chased away from its Archives for 50 years, and Jon is so primed and ready and perfect to be Beholding’s next avatar, so of course this Creature which is a pure manifestation of Beholding would be interested in Jon — but he MISSES HIS CAT GODDAMNIT. They’re about to get into an UGLY custody battle.

(Elias refuses to even call the cat Oculus because he thinks the name Jon gave it is very silly. It’s a timeless ageless aspect of fear?? It doesn’t need a name?? It pisses him off SO bad that “”Oculus””answers to the name. Him hissing under his breath at it like ‘this is beneath you!!’ while Oculus gets belly rubs and treats because Yes I Am A Normal Cat Thank You Please Love On Me

You know who else is loves that thing? Michael 👀

Oculus’s preferred method of feeding, besides fetching the Archivist fresh Statements of course, is to stalk and Watch someone until they start to question their own sanity. Surely that can’t be the same stray cat watching you at both home and work. You’re on vacation in Mexico, that is NOT the same cat. It’s totally normal that that cat is watching you, right? Like, completely unblinkingly. You never see it move but one minute it’s watching you from somebody’s garden wall and then when you pass out of sight and round the corner now it’s watching you from someone’s porch and when did it get past you?? Also the owl perched on the tree outside your window at night can’t be the same as that cat but maybe they’re in cahoots (pun intended) because you SWEAR it has the same eyes and the damn thing won’t just LOOK AWAY FOR TWO SECONDS. You’re changing clothes in your room with the curtains drawn and you swear you can feel its eyes on you. Then you turn around and there’s a cat on your bed and you DON’T HAVE A CAT. But it’s watching you, purring lazily, and there’s a door in your room that you don’t remember being there, which the cat entered through. Surely you just forgot that you got a cat. Yes, that must be it. You lay down for bed and the cat — a sweet, cuddly thing — drapes itself on your chest, purring the entire time, and GOD it’s heavy, so heavy you can barely expand your chest to breathe under its weight, and it won’t stop staring at you. You’ve never seen it blink. Surely you’re losing your mind.

(Michael and Oculus take turns with the victims depending on what the person ends up most afraid of: the so-called “”cat”” itself, or the certainty that they’re losing their mind. Sometimes Oculus plucks their eyes out and eats them, then sucks the dreams from their head like marrow from a bone. Other times Oculus tempts them into Michael’s door with the most adorable little meows. Michael is always polite and drops his little friend back off in the Magnus Institute with a careful scratch behind the ears.)

Michael Shelley remembers that cat. He never pet it when he was Gertrude’s assistant, Gertrude barred everyone from interacting with it and some quiet primal instinct told him to listen to her. But he left out tuna for it and he never chased it away. And now that he’s the Distortion he gives the GOOD scritches. Plus, the little guy has quite the impish sense of humor! Whenever it wants to go somewhere it can’t easily fly to, it’ll meow plaintively at a blank stretch of wall until a door appears to take it to an ideal ambush site from which to prank its next victim (or Elias or the archival staff). It’s a symbiotic Eye & Spiral relationship!

Meanwhile the Archival staff do Not understand why Jon is so unconcerned by the “”cat””. They’ve seen the shapes its body makes when it’s half in shadow, out the corner of their eye. Felt the Weight of its gaze. They don’t like its strange eyes. Don’t like the way it follows Jon around. But he’s so smitten with the thing, and it acts so Normal around him like it’s trying not to scare him away.

Occulus, the weird cat that belongs to the Archives acting as it's ever watchful guardian. It's a very normal cat, we swear. (With @nopaintjustpain~~)

Finally talking about the dream I had about Dan and Phil before tour started (I am aware it sounds insane which is why I haven't told this for months):

In fan photos from the European leg of the tour, Dan's knuckles were constantly bloody. He never mentioned it or anything, but it was long enough that it wasn't just a one-off thing. The phandom decided this was the one time for not speculating and having boundaries, and remarkably said nothing. The vibe was very much "eh, his hands got fucked up and we're focused on the tour content." The mainstream news, though, was OBSESSED. Like, CNN was regularly running stories asking why Dan's hands were always bloody, trying to get the inside info on these touring youtubers.

I was a reporter at the time, and I was assigned to follow Dan and Phil and figure out what was up. Which at first was sort of fine, then I felt really shitty about it because I was basically spying on them and getting weird paparazzi shots. And it was clear that my job required me to be spying on them and basically harassing them. The media (including me) were so invasive that they had to cancel the tour bus in america, and decided to do the entire tour by boat (how they were going to reach cities that didn't have a coast or river idk). But on the phyacht, no one could follow them the way they could with a bus.

Except for me, because I snuck onto the fucking boat.

Then I see Dan, crawling up the stairs from the inside of the boat to the deck on his hands and knees, knuckles down on the metal stairs. He does this every single time and refuses to walk up the stairs normally, and clearly this is why his hands are always bloody. Great news for my job, except it's the worst answer to know because Dan doing this constantly and not telling anyone means he's either having a mental break or it's a really weird kink, neither of which I want to be publicly reported on.

Of course, it's not that big of a boat and Dan and Phil find out I've stowed away on it and they're fucking pissed, which is understandable. I try from then on to leave them the fuck alone, I keep my distance on the boat now that I have an answer. (They also can't kick me off the boat, because of some obscure journalism law?)

So I keep following them into every venue, and they look like they want to murder me 24/7, meanwhile I'm scoping out the back of the theaters to check for other photographers because I don't want someone else to find out and write something worse than whatever I'll inevitably have to report. One time I see there's a room full of people they don't know about and I try to whisper at them to go the other way, but they don't listen and do it anyway. And I'm just there like ugh, please just listen to me, I swear I'm trying to help you.

And I'm stalling and stalling trying to give them time to fix it or say something and not have to leak this info, because clearly they don't want this to be public and it's going to be mega-viral the moment I say something.

Anyway, the dream sort of faded out there but for whatever fucking reason this is what my subconscious generated.

About the chicken, there's a few interesting ways I can see it, though no guarantees because there's a lot of mixed up possibilities. First I was certain there was some kind of torture or execution method involving being hung upside down by one leg, and ended up finding ana-tsurushi

(paraphrasing) In the 1600s it was used against japanese christians to make them renounce their faith. They'd be hung upside down in a hole and have their arms tied, with 1 arm free so they could signal their renunciation. It isn't in a shit filled hole, instead above a fire, and doesn't have it's wings bound, but with the 1 leg free it's fitting. I also am not a scholar here having only read the wiki article, but it's a thread to follow. As it's a combination of hung upside down (to make christians renounce faith) with burned at the stake (witches) it makes me wonder if Mutsumi was ever forced into some kind of conversion therapy? She definitely exhibits some autistic behaviors, and celebrity families have historically done some terrible things to their disabled children. ABA therapy is pretty much therapy to force autistics to act more "normal" and it can be even worse performed by some therapists than others. It would require them to actually outright state a diagnosis that the parents would be ashamed of, but we're already in uncharted territory for bandori.

I know that mussolini's corpse was also hung upside down in a similar manner, as it was italian custom for particularly evil people and I swear I've seen pictures of him with one leg loose before, but I can't find them and also do not understand how that would tie in.

Lastly there's the fact it's a chicken. When you slaughter an animal you generally want to hang it upside down by both feet to let the blood drain from the prime meat to the neck. Usually it'd be by both feet, but there could be symbolism in it being 1 foot. Maybe a combo of slaughter with ana tsurushi. Then the fire would likely be about it getting cooked. Could be symbolic of how she feels like a piece of meat to be eaten, or could point to a literal pet chicken that got slaughtered. Maybe some relatives on a farm that she visited a lot, with 1 chicken she really liked that got slaughtered. It's a pretty common trauma for kids who grew up with poultry, since only so many roosters and non-laying hens are usually allowed in a farm. If any at all.

Idk how it relates to her headspace, but there's a lot of possible directions it could go. There's also Umiri hanging upside down in the intro that could be tied to some of the same ideas, but just spitballing here

With the repeat imagery of different Mutsumi-s, and with her "teleportation" on stage, when I first saw Mortis' little feetsies I was like oh. Yeah. Her alter who's a little doll.

In hindsight, her frozen state may be interpreted as dissociation - no one being in front in that moment.

I truly didn't expect a genuine possibility that BanG Dream! would feature a character with DID, and I was especially not expecting the portrayal of a non-human alter, and yet, when I saw small feet walk up to Mutsumi in the Episode 3 teaser, it clicked in my brain.

But is this actually DID? Could it be another disorder, or is Ave Mujica intended to introduce fantastical elements that are not grounded in reality?

I'm not under the impression that Ave Mujica is going to be supernatural horror. Of course, the imagery itself is fantastical, but that's a quality from working with a visual medium.

The visual medium brings forward some questions - such as, does the Mutsumi-chan we know have a headspace wherein she views herself in the appearance of a child?

Or, alternatively, is this appearance due to experiencing flashbacks?

Mortis, when she's not the doll, assumes her older form. Since other characters look like dolls and toys in this section - perhaps headspace - toys might be the tool with which she processes those thoughts and not representative of Mortis' self.

But Mutsumi also perceives her guitar as having a voice, which is less conventional.

Could a disorder that causes hallucinations be another possible interpretation? So far, with the knowledge that Mortis "takes control" and causes completely different behaviours from their body, it's not the one that makes the most sense.

It seems her guitar might be an identity of hers that wants to sing, but doesn't have that control. Still, she later repeats "I can't make the guitar sing": the way she views her guitar might still be different from an alter, for which Mortis fits the role, and rather a symptom of feeling a disconnect from the music she plays. How much music communicates is an important theme of BanG Dream!, after all, and here Mutsumi says this: I can't communicate through music. (I know that when I used to play music, I would be praised for the emotions that were specific to my playing - this is a genuine feeling.) It's important to note that even if she does have DID, her worries about CRYCHIC are still also happening.

...But Mutsumi may herself be the guitar...*

Looking at Sakiko crying all over again, feeling negative emotions as though it's going on right now - those are flashbacks. DID is a disorder linked with C-PTSD.

This audience of multiple Mutsumi-s continues to show up when Mortis comes back to talk to her, which contributes to its meaning as imagery of viewing "different selves".

...I don't know why the chicken has an opinion. (And I don't think I'm familiar with its imagery.)

Is this just imagery of her mental breakdown? Am I wrong for seeing resemblances with dissociative identity disorder?

The thing is, I have no idea where Bushiroad stands on representing mental health and disorders. I mean, much of BanG Dream! has had what felt to me like genuine attempts to write autistic experiences - most evidently with Mashiro's and Tomori's world views - I also believe Kasumi fits the criteria for ADHD - but it's never said. That, to me, is a point of worry. Are we doing secret-DID? Are we doing DID-inspired fiction?

During the band's fight, what Mutsumi experiences is once again a flashback.

Whilst one would argue that a highschool band disbanding isn't that traumatising - first of all, this is the Bandoriverse - but most importantly, if she has an established disorder such as C-PTSD or, as I'm observing here, DID, she is someone with an established propension to experience flashbacks. Lots of feelings can also get mixed up together and cause something seemingly small to mean a lot to the traumatised individual.

Of course, the question is - what did Mutsumi experience to develop DID? Neglect is a plausible theory, given her family's setup, but again, without knowing Bushiroad's exact standards and goal, should we expect a realistic backstory for the disorder?

...Has Sakiko, without her knowledge, met an alter of Mutsumi's before?

Then, Mutsumi identifies "Mortis". She has not introduced herself before, which is why this looks to me - and makes sense due to the context of Mortis as a concept being introduced fairly recently into her life - like a system that has formed a new alter.

...Should I be scared?

If this is meant to be sincere writing of DID, it should remain a fact that Mortis does nothing but try to protect Mutsumi. And though the visual is scary, it makes sense for one to be taking the other's place. (Would it make sense to say Mortis is becoming the host?)

Of course, since I don't know Bushiroad's intentions, they might still be intending on using those concepts for horror alone.

Well, even with the best of intentions, Mortis forcing Mutsumi out is actually quite scary and makes for an uneven relationship.

And for an alter to go dormant and not come back is something people are likely to grieve.

Going mildly insane over Emmrich and Johanna's messed-up friendship.

He knows that only the most selfless should become liches; he would have helped her if she'd asked. They were students together. Her confidence in the face of death made him feel braver. She keeps saying she's going to kill him, but despite ample opportunity to track him down and do so, they only ever fight when he comes looking for her. She used to beg him to play tabletop games with her. He's the only person she has any respect for. She makes the most half-assed possible attempt to kill him when they reunite (trapping the Fade expert in the Fade???) She invites all her enemies to a murder party, but not him. (Was it really too much of a risk, Johanna? Or could you just not bring yourself to?)

She never seems actually prepared to kill him, but he is prepared to kill her. He calls her by her first name. She only ever uses his surname. She mocks him if he's in a relationship with Rook, but then says she'll bury him and his new lover in the same grave, like he said he wanted one time 30 years ago. He keeps her skull in his room. She does nothing but heckle him. He keeps her there anyway.

She monologues about how he's weak, pathetic, a bleeding heart, but when she learns that the world is on the brink of apocalypse, she demands, 'Get Volkarin on it!'

He is one of the kindest men in Thedas, and she is a monster, and they cannot stop loving each other. Who the fuck is doing it like them.
