I see the development of Terukane as a slow process which involves Teru becoming more comfortable with his queerness and also reflecting on his own wants and needs regarding his future for the first time. He’s unhappy with his life as it is, and Akane wouldn’t put up with that. He’d make Teru take his own feelings into consideration, which would lead to a series of very difficult revelations for Teru. So the majority of the slowburn is Teru learning to accept that he cannot find true happiness within the path that has been paved for him, including the expectation of marrying a woman (or of not loving men, depending on whether I’m writing him as gay or bi)

Once they actually get together I see Teru becoming much more comfortable in his own skin. He doesn’t hesitate to be grossly affectionate with Akane in public, but mostly because he does it to annoy Akane. During more serious moments, the aforementioned internalized homophobia might make him feel awkward about being with a man. I just finished the first season of The Chosen, here are my thoughts...

For context, I have a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard, and I am a United Church of Christ preacher and member-in-discernment.

Overall I am really enjoying the show, I've cried a few times, and it has made my faith feel deeper and made me feel more connected to Jesus. I can't wait to pick up season two from the library on Monday and keep watching.

Here's a list, in no particular order, of things on my mind as I finish season one:

I love the show's portrayal of Jesus. He is welcoming, friendly, funny, and sensitive. At the same time he can be strange and uncanny. Jonathan Roumie absolutely crushes it in this role, and it was easy to think "this is Jesus" instead of thinking it is an actor playing Jesus. I do sort of wish Jesus was a little bit scarier, a little more challenging, but I get the feeling that will come later.

Nicodemus as a POV character is an inspired choice. Much like many modern Christians, Nicodemus struggles to believe what he is seeing, yet he longs to believe anyways. It's easy for me to see myself in him, especially as a highly-educated theologian. Additionally, seeing things from Nicodemus' perspective adds nuance and depth to how we see the Pharisees and the Sanhedrin, instead of succumbing to the unambiguous (and grossly antisemitic) villain treatment so many Christians still gleefully participate in on Palm Sunday. And the astute viewer will remember that Nicodemus has a very important role to play at the end of the story, when we eventually get there.

On the other hand, the Romans are cartoonish villains for most of the first season. I started rolling my eyes whenever Quintus appears on screen, eyebrow cocked, wicked sneer on his lips. It sure drives home the point about the Romans being violent colonizers and oppressors, but in a story that presents everyone as redeemable--even tax collectors--the fact that Quintus doesn't seem redeemable stands out. Gaius seems to be quite a bit more nuanced, so I can't help but wonder if we'll continue to see development for him.

I liked the portrayal of Matthew as autistic-coded. To me he doesn't feel like a caricature, I can see myself in him, and I empathize with him. The scene when Jesus asks him to follow really hit me.

Much has been said about this show's portrayal of emotionally-vulnerable masculinity and I strongly agree with it. The men in this show are tender, they're affectionate, they're supportive. They laugh and cry and hug freely. It's probably the best portrayal of masculinity in media that I've seen since Lord of the Rings.

The theology of the show was more progressive than I was expecting, though I didn't agree with everything the writing posits. The show's framing of Jesus' healing miracles as him forgiving the sins of the sick/disabled person grates on me. At the same time, I love how the opening of most episodes present a scene from the Hebrew Bible. It grounds the show's theology and Jesus' ministry in the Jewish scriptures, a thing that I think Christians too often avoid. It also does so in a way that feels connected to the Hebrew Bible instead of being supersessionist.

"Get used to different." What a great line. I wanna use that in a sermon. That's what following Jesus is all about, isn't it? Amen.

          nancy  should’ve  expected  this.  they  had  their  own  space  now;  they  were  adults  who  didn’t  have  to  worry  about  their  parents  interfering  with  their  lives.  it  was  one  of  things  that  appealed  to  nancy  the  most  about  moving  out  to  boston—far,  far  away  from  hawkins  and  freedom  from  her  overwhelming,  albeit  well-meaning  parents  ( well,  mostly  her  mother ).  

        �� something  that  nancy  had  FAILED  to  account  for  would  be  the  amount  of  INTENSITY  and  INTIMACY  that  came  with  having  steve,  her  boyfriend,  for  a  roommate.  he’d  been  bad  enough  when  they  were  both  still  in  hawkins,  finding  ways  to  sneak  off  together.  nancy  had  liked  the  THRILL  of  it  all,  and  in  fact,  she  still  got  a  THRILL  at  knowing  that  she  could  be  as  grossly  affectionate  with  steve  as  she  wanted  to  be  here  without  the  unwanted  gags  and  annoyed  stares  from  their  friends.  though  she’d  be  lying  if  she  said  that  she  didn’t  miss  the  sneaking  off  from  their  friends  and  the  sometimes  steamy  but  always  sweet  moments  they  shared  back  then.

          she  supposed  that  they  could  still  find  ways  to  sneak  around  here,  too,  but  that  would  also  require  the  risk  of  being  charged  with  something.  plus,  it  wasn’t  as  fun  if  she  didn’t  get  to  gross  out  their  friends—even  if  she  could  also  do  without  the  unwanted  remarks  that  came  with  it.

          nevertheless,  she  had  other  things  to  worry  about;  no  need  to  dwell  on  the  past.  she’d  much  rather  focus  on  the  here  and  now—ESPECIALLY  with  the  way  her  skin  tingled  as  steve  trailed  kisses  down  her  body.  she  downright  shivered  at  his  accompanying  words.  yes,  she  found  that  she  very  much  ENJOYED  having  steve  as  her  roommate…

          for  a  moment,  her  eyes  fluttered  shut,  having  half  a  mind  to  just  shut  up  and  let  steve  have  his  way  with  her,  but  the  reminder  that  she  had  classes  that  morning  prompted  her  to  glance  over  at  the  alarm  clock  on  her  bedside  table.  6:55  am.  she’d  woken  up  before  her  alarm—or  more  like  steve  had  woken  her  up.

          “ steve… ”  she  sighed,  voice  crackling  from  misuse.  “ i  don’t  think  five  minutes  is  enough  time;  i  have  classes,  remember ? ”

@flyingwide and that darn (affectionate) hand post I made got me thinking about Sus's origins again, and who or what he could have possibly been before he was Susurrus. And I started outlining a potential prequel story and I just... keep giving myself feels.

Why do the altars at the end of the labyrinths look like a shrine? Specifically, to me, it looks like a butsudan, which among other things is where Japanese Bhuddist families honor their dead (and I'm grossly oversimplifying that).

If Susurrus was her hated enemy, why would the First Tanta leave his fragments in a memorial shrine? Specifically, one where it's traditionally used to pay respects to family members who have died?

If the First Tanta was the "woman with power beyond that of man," did she make these shrines for the man who loved her that she couldn't love in return? If so, why would she trap Susurrus in them?

I have the thought that Susurrus was that man, and in his anger and sorrow he sacrificed his humanity, but in doing so he lost sight of his love for her—either by design of that higher power that created the Susurrus we know today, or because his anger, grief, and desperation warped his adulation and love for her into animosity and hatred. Perhaps, "in time, he grew to accept his fate" is a heavy glossing over and sanitization of the six days that the First Tanta and Susurrus battled.

Is it plausible in canon? Probably not. Am I missing something that disproves my theory? Almost certainly. Am I having fun breaking my own heart with the idea? You bet your sweet ass I am! :D

Is it weird that I don't "project" my diagnoses, etc. onto my sims/ocs? Like I know a ton of people who are autistic write autistic characters, or ace people write a lot of ace characters. (I am both.) But I have never really found the compulsion to do that? Not a single one of my sims to date is autistic, and only one of my nonsis OCs is. And weirdly enough, despite being aroace, I write a lot of romance-centered shit.

Idk why I'm coming rambling into your inbox about it, but I just realized that I don't do that, and I don't know why. A lot of people talk about having characters who are really, really similar to themselves, but then there's me with none of my characters are anything like me.

The closest I come to projecting onto my characters in any form is the fact that all my stories are about love (in any form), and no matter what shit goes down, there's always a (mostly) happy ending. Other than that, most of my characters are absolutely nothing like me, lmao.

i don't think it's weird at all!! to be honest, i think it's really commendable that you're capable of writing about many different types of people without pulling from your own experiences! i have the opposite problem, where i tend to pull from my own experiences so often that it's difficult to write about characters who don't resemble myself, to the point where sometimes i feel like my characters even talk too similarly to myself aha. i think maybe sometimes it's scary to have characters who feel so much like yourself, like it feels as though you're bearing your soul out to the world when you write about someone whose experiences are so similar to your own. i can see how it's a daunting task! honestly though i don't think it truly matters where the inspiration for your characters comes from. as long as you're writing and expressing yourself, i think that's what matters most! especially since this is just a silly hobby of ours, it's not like we're getting paid to write these stories. so just have fun with it you know!!

i have a few favorite scenes in the brie/vlad backstory, it's hard to pinpoint just one!! honestly, though, any scene where they're being grossly affectionate and simultaneously oblivious makes my heart explode. i really like the scene where they finally get together too, but i haven't yet written that one out since it's towards the end of the story, and i'd say i'm about 3/4ths of the way done writing everything. there's a few fight scenes i'm nervous to take screenshots of whenever i get to that point, but i think i have the ability to pull it off!! i've been thinking very intensely about how to play these scenes out, so i have a few ideas for the execution aha. and obviously breanna!! because as i mentioned above, i have difficulty writing about characters who aren't similar to me, and breanna was created specifically to be similar to me, so she feels really natural to write and discuss. obviously we have our differences, but i think a lot of our emotions are similar, even if the root cause for our emotions come from very different places. and it helps that she likes the same things i do and she talks the way i do, so i don't have to stress out over her personality much since i feel like i know her very well. is that weird? aha fjeroaigjrstohjrthklmr;mnsre she's just like me fr!
