Both of their knives in the ship's captain face menacingly questioning for loot, then discussing what they are going to take from ship, picking things they think the other will like and excitedly showing to them "Ed, look at this lovely piece of fabric I found. I think it matches your shirt!" And "Hey Stede, look at this book I found in the captain's quarters, the cover looks pretty nice", then managing splitting the loot for the crew?????? Have y'all thought about that?

No, wait, losing my mind actually. Because has Ed ever been called "boyfriend" before? I doubt Calico Jack would have called Ed "boyfriend". And we have nothing to go on in regards to Ed's other potential past relationships.

“Bad people” (which is a subjective idea and “good and bad” is entirely based on your morals and worldview which is affected by so much everyday) deserve love. They’re people. Izzy deserves love. Ed deserves love. Any of the crew deserves love. They deserve it just as much as Stede does. Just because Ed and Izzy’s trauma made them aggressive and hardened unlike Stede doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get to experience kindness.

I don’t like that Ed is cruel. I didn’t enjoy that he cut off Izzy’s toe. That scene was uncomfortable, because it was written like that. It’s not a “good people do bad things” scenario, this is how Edward acts.

People are going to have to learn how to love him as a whole, even if they don’t like him sometimes, because that’s allowed! I love my boyfriend, but he is not perfect. He has done bad things. He has done things that cross my morals, and he has apologized. This is how relationships work. Obviously real life is pretty far from fiction a lot of the time, but it still applies here.

Edward is going to have to apologize to Israel, and he’s going to have to accept it if Izzy doesn’t forgive him.

Izzy knows what he dislikes about Blackbeard. He knows he can be distractible, silly, and kind and he doesn’t like it. But he never considers the things that make Ed Blackbeard unlikeable (to him), even when it hurts him emotionally and physically, because he’s too loyal. He can’t leave, Ed never lets him. He’s too convincing, and he knows just what Izzy is after (first season, episode 4, Ed proposes the idea of faking his death by killing Stede while he’s wearing his clothes and maiming his body beyond recognition. Then he could retire, and Izzy could be the captain of the ship. Izzy stays because of this conversation, and is very excited about the idea of being captain). So Izzy stays to pine.

I keep seeing so many people here getting angry that this season is "vilifying Ed", and it's depressingly fascinating to see how others can watch the same show and somehow see something completely different. Is it simply the lack of media literacy? Is it the inability to appreciate and enjoy complex, nuanced, morally grey characters without willfully blocking out anything even slightly unpalatable about them to the point where the character they think they love isn't really that character anymore?

Because, uh... Season 1 already "vilified" Ed plenty. Except "vilify" is the wrong word, of course. It wasn't in any way malicious or mean-spirited, quite the contrary, it was often played as comedic (until the end of episode 10 when it was anything but) - Ed was always meant to be a sympathetic character, he's a protagonist after all, and the show's portrayal of him is very compassionate. It merely refused to sugarcoat or shy away from his darker side. He's literally history's most famous pirate, you don't become one by being nice and treating everyone gently. He ambushed and strangled his own father to death when he was like 9 years old (100% deserved and justifiable ofc, but it still bears saying it out loud like this just to comprehend how unhinged this actually was). He loves torturing and maiming people for fun, and sometimes even animals (that scene with forcing a turtle to fight a crab). He didn't give a fuck about his crew members dying to satisfy his whim to meet Stede. He entirely failed in his role as a captain in ep 4. He effectively played a double agent with Izzy and Stede for a while before changing his mind. He attempted to murder Lucius. And while you could try to argue his punishment of Izzy was at least to some degree deserved, not only cutting Izzy's toe off but forcing him to eat went beyond punishment, it was sadistic torture.

So, yeah, please just read all that and take it in. And then remember once again that Ed is also a traumatised, lonely, depressed, sensitive, creative, curious, deeply passionate person yearning for true love and for something different in life... just like Stede. He loves music and can play the piano. He wrote a very vulnerable song and sand his heart out. He likes his tea with seven sugars. He enjoys fashion and dressing up. He has such a limitless sense of wonder for the world. He went on a trek with Stede just to make him happy, even though he hated nature and was in a shit mood that day. He wants to host a talent show. He wants to become free. He's clever and funny and fascinating. I love Ed.

Yes, it's possible to reconcile those two sides of him and accept both sides as the "real" Ed. You have to reconcile the two sides if you want to enjoy him as a character, because if you don't, you're going to either detest him to the core (which would make enjoying the show practically impossible since he's sort of a main character...), or you'll only be able to enjoy a diminished, crippled, cardboard cutout version of his character, which would be such a pity and a massive disservice to the creators of this show who worked hard to create interesting, multidimensional characters.

Not to mention you'd be missing one of the core messages of the show - the idea that people still deserve love and can be loved even if they're imperfect, or not necessarily good people. Because love is a human condition. It's not a sole dominion of "good" people. "Bad" people can fall in love too - even if, just like them, that love isn't exactly "nice" or "pure", and neither are the relationships that stem from it. They can be messy and exasperating. But "bad" people can also grow and change because of it. That's what OFMD is ultimately about - growth and change, learning to accept yourself but also become better. That can't happen if the character is already 100% perfect the way they are.Ed is far from that. So is Izzy. They can both become better, and they both still deserve compassion and understanding, because that's the environment people need to become better.

So, if you're mad that at the start of S2 the crew are sympathetic to Izzy's suffering and want to help him instead of kicking him when he's down, and what Ed did to him is being acknowledged as cruel and wrong... congratulations, you have completely missed what OFMD is all about.

Finished ep 8 of OFMD S2... And I have thoughts

Am i the only one that felt Izzy's death to be kinda.... Eh?

It's just, we've seen people in this show come back from so much worse. The ridiculous ammount of times Stede and everyone else has been stabbed or shot and come out completely ok; the crew starving for who knows how many days in the tiniest patch of land ever; Lucius thrown off into the sea; guy getting his nose cut off; auntie, who in the same episode suffers from a "pretty bad" wound. These are the only moments I can remember off the top of my head rn but there's probably more.

Like, all of these wounds/incidents would've normally been deadly. But OFMD has never been one for very realistic consequences. Izzy sings La Vie en Rose. In the 1700s.

Like. Yeah.

So, for Izzy Hands - Izzy Fucking Hands, who we've been shown, throughtout this season especially, who's a super mega badass - to die from a stray bullet in the middle of what was overall a pretty meh fight (in terms of stakes) feels like a betrayal. At least to me it did.

Or at least, it feels like lazy writing. I dunno. I just think there would've been better ways for him to go. It felt to me like spitting on his character. The guy went through so much development, he suffered so much to get where he was at the end of the season.... It feels really sucky he had to die when he was finally in a better place.

The Unicorn leg. His singing. Trying to train Stede. This was all so hopeful! Like Izzy was turning around. He was relearning what piracy meant and relearning to love it. But then... He's saying he wants to die to Edd at the end. That didn't feel real to me... Maybe I'm just being unrealistic idk, but that felt so much like a basic line. If he'd said that in the beggining of the season I would've believed it. But after everything he went through in season 2? It just sounds a lil cheap for me.

And again, that could've been ok. I wouldn't like it, but I could accept his death, if the show wasn't so characteristic for ass-pulling.

If this had been any other show, I could be sad, and feel bad that Izzy was taken so soon, but I wouldn't feel betrayed. Because "that's just the pirate life". But that's never really been the pirate life that's been shown to us thus far. What we've seen is a bunch of super-humans who can get through anything. Since when has a stray bullet wound killed anyone relevant in this show?

And btw, I'm not complaining about OFMD not being realistic with human bodies. And I'm not complaining about Izzy getting killed by a random bullet wound. I'm complaining over the fact that these two things co-exist. It feels like a cheap death. Like they wanted to kill Izzy for the emotional impact, but hadn't planned for it beforehand, and had to resort to the easy method last minute.

Idk. These are just my thoughts. Does anyone agree with me? Or not? I'd love to discuss this with others, its been plaguing me :p

�� what draws you towards your hyperfixation? what is interesting about it?

for OFMD: i love the characters!!!!!! all of themmmm. their dynamics are probably the most interesting thing for me. i also love the setting & playing around with more serious sailing stuff, and also into the areas that make this group special. i think fundamentally, the show is such a good sandbox to play around with, what could happen, why, etc etc. i love adding little pockets of lore (i think this is why im so drawn to Sam Bellamy stuff, its adding more to the universe & to izzy and layers of depth that werent there before, even if hes completely part of the past). especially after s1 and kraken era speculation, it was all the what ifs and maybes that drew me in.

for PMMM: this is a hard one! i first watched madoka back when it came out in 2011 so its really hard for me to imagine a life where its not important to me. i think the thing for me about madoka magica, is that its about hope. it so often gets sold as a dark magical girl anime, but at its core, madoka is about looking despair in the face, and choosing hope anyway. its about finding a way through even when it seems impossible. ive always been drawn to that. and the interpersonal dynamics- im big into the different story manga, which adds so much depth to kyoko & mamis characters & their relationships.

🎥 do you have any favorite scenes from your hyperfixation?

for OFMD: ive already mentioned one, so again, that, but a second one: the new unicorn scene. its both the complete opposite to the other, and its twin, and it means so much to me. its really first time we see izzy released from his duties, as first mate, to ed, this is just izzy. and its the first time we properly see him accepted by the crew. i dont really know how to put into words what this scene means to me, but i think you understand anyway. i cried. thats my fucking boy!!!!!!!!!!

for PMMM: i think most of my favourite scenes are from the manga (again, TDS fan) but out of the anime, i think its probably the fight against Elsa Maria- its stylised in a gorgeous way, the animation and movement is artistic and gorgeous. and, its the first moment where you really start to feel dread. the first moment you realise that something awful is coming. its beautiful artistically and narratively

💕 tell us about one of your favorite characters and why you like them!

for OFMD: skipping right over the obvious, because ive dedicated my life to the fuckin guy, archie!!!!!!! my sweet love!!!! urgh shes ao delightful, one of the best things to come out of season 2 forreal. i dont think theres a single scene with archie i dont like, i love her stupid little quips and her pragmatism about everything. thats just the way things go, we fight to the death. pointing out that the guys on top do get away with it. idk, theres just not a single thing i dont love. its also so nice to introduce someone not of the revenge mindset, but also not as messed up over things as fang & izzy. she just fills her role perfectly. so fun to see a "normal" pirate. i love her i would do anything for her

for PMMM: i am, in my heart of hearts, a kyoko girly. my first love, the original. i think loving kyoko set me on the path to love izzy too. shes the underdog, she comes in as the villain of the story, till you start to dig into her character and understand why she feels the way she does about things. even if you disagree, its a different perspective on her. shes teeth and claws and knows nothing but fighting to survive. i love her backstory and her attitude to the truth of their life, and i love her stupid little quips. yes girl it is reasonable to break a guys legs to get him to date

🏳‍🌈 do you have any headcanons (lgbt, race, neuro, etc) that are important to you?

for OFMD: as i said earlier, im pretty flexible on most headcanons, usually working whichever fits in to the particular idea im thinking about, but trans izzy is pretty consistently up there. its one of those things that i think adds a lot of flavour to his actions in canon, and also adds backstory to him and why he might be who we meet in canon in the first place. also making characters trans fucks and should always be done 👍

Listen, I have been listening to The Chain on repeat for 3 days. I'm literally writing fanfic about it for Fictober23. I'm about to write another one in like 5 mins.

I'm not exaggerating I really think ofmd season 2 will change my life

i'm really of two minds when it comes to ofmd 2x04... on the one hand, i absolutely love it. my favorite episode of season 2, maybe even of the show. every beat is perfect, every character is perfect, there's no plotline i'm ever bored with. and as a conclusion to the breakup plotline beginning in 1x09, it's perfect.

.... almost.

i really am so conflicted! i love the episode so much. i remember watching for the first time and thinking oh, they're gonna be fine at the "buttons turned into a seagull!" line. i love how quickly everything becomes okay between ed and stede, because they just are with each other... but at the same time, i remember being a little disappointed that this was all that came of the breakup storyline.

you might argue that the first three episodes of season 2 add quite a lot to that storyline, and you wouldn't be wrong at all, but the way i see it, those first three episodes are more about the consequences of 1x10, and izzy threatening ed until he took up the blackbeard mantle again. stede leaving absolutely plays a role, but i feel like if izzy hadn't threatened ed, the fallout of the breakup would be VERY different. i was so on edge for 2x04 bc i was here for the REUNION. i wanted to know what they'd say, how stede would explain himself... i remember being rly sad when the opening scene cut after the headbutt (which makes complete sense after thinking on it, but at the time i was bummed), and then again in the parlor scene when stede never explains WHY he left that night. i love how easily things get back to normal, but i also love the drama!!! ed snippily pretending he's fine while peppering in little comments; anne meddling, and stede being way more concerned about it than ed is; anne telling ed that stede left him for mary; the PARLOR SCENE. having that back and forth feels cathartic in my mind. and i may just feel with this way bc i sat with that horrible/amazing cliffhanger for over a year, building up the inevitable reunion in my head. i think i was just expecting more. i could've watched like three straight episodes of their Ex Era.

and this isn't necessarily a criticism of the writers!! i DO love 2x04. and i think there's a lot of reasons the messy parts didn't get drawn out. budget cuts, two less episodes than last year. my biggest complaint was stede not mentioning the chauncey thing, but a part of me also kind of likes it -- bc season 2 was ed's season, and i'm guessing part of the reason stede never said is because he didn't want to put the burden of his trauma on ed when ed was already going through so much. honestly, part of my frustration with this plotline might just come with building up that cliffhanger in my mind for a year, reading all these fics and imagining it in all these different ways... and it's not as if the breakup trauma isn't littered throughout the season. it's absolutely part of the reason ed leaves in 2x07. and part of me really feels like we might come back to all this stuff that's been left unspoken between them, PARTICULARLY stede being abducted -- this show feels too deliberate to never tell ed that's what happened.

i hope we'll get more of this addressed in season 3! and if we don't, i guess a part of me will always be a little bummed that we never got back to it. but no matter what happens... i still do love what we got. love it to the point that criticizing it feels kinda insane! i guess that's a testament to the quality of ofmd: even the frustrating parts aren't all that frustrating.

Festivids Rec List, But Make It Horny (Part 1)

So this year I am the extremely lucky recipient of three wonderful Festivids, and I could not be happier! They all understood exactly what I love about the sources I request, they have excellent music choices and are beautifully made, and, to my delight, they are all horny as hell! (Also a quick shout out to Raising Hell – it didn’t seem horny enough to include, and I know nothing about the fandom, but a nun does certainly seem to have sex in it. Possibly several times) 12. Drink You Sober, Sucker, With You a Girl Could Get Bolder, & Believe in You (Bound) I could not be happier with the fact that there are four gorgeous Bound vids this year, but I’ve lumped them together lest they completely overwhelm my list. Drink You Sober (a beautiful, sexy, amazing gift for me!!!) and Sucker are the hornier of the four, but that’s mostly to say the other two have more varied content. Honestly they’re all hot as hell and feature lesbian sex very, very prominently. While there’s nothing overtly kinky shown, they get a lot of points for how wild and transgressive it was for two (trans women to make a movie with explicit lesbian sex where the lesbians get to be happy in the 90s. Also Violet is an unapologetically horny femme top and we love to see it. 11. Magnetic (Romeo+Juliet) & Boys Keep Swinging (As You Like It) I’ve also decided to lump these two together because they’re both a ton of fun, they’re both Shakespeare, and they both have the MOST gender imaginable and I love it. Also I couldn’t decide which to put above which. Magnetic features Harold Perrineau’s Mercutio while Boys Keep Swinging showcases a whole bunch of Rosalinds and everyone in both vids is just throwing the gender binary right the fuck out the window and if I may say so, that is very hot of them. Magnetic is definitely the hornier of the two, but on sheer gender-fuckery points alone they deserve to share this slot. 10. I Like That & I’m That Queer (Janelle Monáe RPF) Another two I couldn’t separate: the two wonderful vids all about the gorgeous, talented, non-binary, bisexual icon, Janelle Monáe! These are both excellent tributes to Janelle and her queerness and her artistry……. Aaaand they’re both super hot. They rank this high on the kink-o-meter because a truly ridiculous number of Janelle Monáe’s music videos feature either explicit or heavily implied orgies or threesomes and also I Like That is I believe the only vid of the year to have sex toys in it. 9. The Shape of You (The Pirate) Speaking of bizarre! I have not seen this movie, so I figure the tags on this one can do a better job explaining its place on the list than I can: hypnotism, pirate dubcon roleplay, sword spanking, elaborate sexual fantasies about Gene Kelly in a skimpy little outfit, and a wild trick with a cigarette. And BOY does it deliver on all those fronts. Whatever weird-ass kink is going on in this movie and this vid, I am living for it. Oh I was here during the whole SuperWhoLock phase, so of course I used to be obsessed with Destiel and Sherlock/Watson. I don't really care about any of those fandoms now (ok maybe except for the older seasons of Dr Who with 9th, 10th and 11th Doctor).

Not sure about my first fanfic in general, but I absolutely do remember my first spicy fanfic. It was Jensen/Cougar from the 2010 The Losers movie

Putting myself on blast here, I really used to enjoy the Loveless anime as a teen. Nowadays the age gap between the characters would 100% be considered problematic (one is 12 and one is 20 dammit) and I do feel a bit weird whenever I remember it

Oh, I haven't heard this term in so long! I don't think I really have anything that could be considered a "crack ship" nowadays, but I did have quite a few as a teen. Mostly anime ones. Can't really remember any now tho

What is the couple you read the most fanfics about?

Hm, I was usually more into the art side of the fandom than the writing part (mostly because my English back then wasn't the greatest and fanfics in my native language used to not be very good). But I do think I read a lot of Naruto fics. Can't remember if any ships in particular tho

What do most of your ships have in common?

Well, most of them are mlm. I have very few straight or lesbian ships. I guess that's because a lot of straight ships are just horribly written.

What do you absolutely hate in a ship?

When one of the partners doesn't take the needs of the other into consideration or ignores them completely, when one of the partners is always the big strong protector and the other is always the helpless damsel in distress even though canon makes it clear both are just as capable as the other, dubious or no consent (doesn't need to be strictly sexual)...
