- I got vacation eyes / And I'm gonna have 'em for the rest of my / Have 'em for the rеst of my life -
When TK wakes up, it’s to the sound of soft waves rolling in the distance, a beautiful melody of them crashing up against the shore as a gentle breeze carries in the smell of the salty ocean. TK smiles, nuzzling his face against his pillow, and stretches out his body, legs lengthening and a satisfied sigh falling from his lips as he feels the soreness of the night before in his bones. He remembers coming in late with Carlos coming in late and throwing their luggage somewhere in the front room as they found their way to each other, hands finding hips, and lips catching joining in a passionate kiss they had been holding back since they boarded the plane. They had stumbled into the bedroom, Carlos flinging the door leading to the balcony - “We’re on our honeymoon, let’s sleep with it open so we can see the scenery” - and then tumbling into bed. Their first time making love as husbands was something else entirely - TK can’t describe how it felt.
The sunlight streaming through the half-haphazardly closed curtain feels nice and warm on his skin and brings his smile to full force. Beside him, Carlos is sleeping soundly, and TK couldn’t ask for a better morning. They’d had so many mornings where they’d woken up separately or hadn’t even gone to bed, staying up to hold each other through the nights. They’d had such a rough and rocky road to the wedding - a road that TK wasn’t even sure would lead to this moment, but now that they’re here he couldn’t be more grateful. He’s married to Carlos and Carlos is married to him. They can face all of the hurt and pain together as a unit. It’s what they do best - taking care of each other.
TK opens his eyes and rolls over, looking at Carlos’ sleeping form. His face is turned towards his, brow finally smoothed out and lips open slightly. TK chuckles softly - he looks so peaceful in his sleep. It’s a peace that Carlos hasn’t known in a few weeks, and TK wishes that he could bottle it all up and give it to Carlos when he needs it. His husband carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. He reaches over and pushes the blanket down, dancing his fingers over Carlos’ strong shoulders. TK scoots closer, pushing the blanket down further, and presses soft, ghost-like kisses over Carlos’ golden skin that’s even more brilliant and glowing in the morning light.
“Good morning,” Carlos says softly a few minutes later. His voice is rough with sleep - and probably a little rough because of how loud TK made him scream last night. The thought makes TK chuckle.

Hi!! My names Lyra, but you can call me Lyr or sleepy. Even Ly is ok!!
This is going to be the pinned post on my blog for a quick rundown about me, and all of my hyperfixations. Including games, characters, shows, etc.
This will of course be added to over time as well, due to new hyperfixations/things I wanna put here. It may also be added to over time if I forgot to put something here initially as well.
Alright. I’m a tiny and am newer to the g/t community, but not g/t in general. I first discovered the g/t community back in early 2021 but I’ve had g/t as a comfort thought since I was real little. Like really little. I’m fine with NSFW g/t but NOT vore at all.
I don’t necessarily have a favorite piece of g/t media, as I enjoy thinking about my OC more, but if I had to choose it’d probably be the episode of Daa Daa Daa where Miyu shrinks.
Before I get into my hyperfixations, I want to talk about my OC. You aren’t gonna see anything about her for a very long time. She’s my only OC, and has been for years, and I love her a lot. There are a lot of features and cliche things about her that I’m sure people would pick at, and I like not having that influence when I think of her.
So for now no OC content other than her name is Lucy, her birthday is July 2nd, and she technically doesn’t have a canon universe she’s in. Although there is one I’d say is a smidge away from being her canon universe, but I still stick her in other universes.
Characters:
I’m starting with characters I’m hyperfixated with because I think that’s the longest so why not.
Hawks: I don’t know how long I’ve been hyperfixated with him but it’s been loooong. He’s my favorite anime character, favorite character, favorite everything. Because of this though, I would actually appreciate no MHA content at all. I’m so hyperfixated with him to the point that sometimes I get sick to my stomach seeing other people talk about him or MHA. In a good way, but that doesn’t make it fun. I obviously can’t stop seeing it, and when I do post OC content, Hawks content will literally be there as well, but just a thing to keep in mind.
Denki Kaminari: Not really sure what to say about him but I love him.
Leon and Ada: Figured I’d put them together because I ship them (don’t hurt me) and I love both of them. Leon is definitely in my top ten characters (Hawks is #1 for reference) and Ada is Ada. How can you not love her.
Jill and Carlos: ^^^^ same thing. Love them both. Ship them. They’re literally both marriage material.
Claire: Don’t ship her with Leon but I love her.
Takumi Usui: Literally just a giant top. First thing I think when I see him is TOP. Also I’m so Misa (minus the tsundere stuff) with him.
Chai from Hi-Fi Rush: He wijdbdkwjwjwjsndkwidnfwm he’s so cute i love him sm. he baby.
Goro Akechi: Same VA as Chai. I don’t know how to do this without spoilers but Royal Akechi is my favorite.
Ryuji Sakamoto: Literally best Persona character. I love him so f much. He’s on my top ten characters.
Futaba and Sumi: Tied as best girls (love sumi a lil more tho) because I personally embody Futaba but Sumi is a precious bb.
Faith Seed: hOLY SHIT I LOVE HER. VERY HIGH UP on my top ten. She’s literally why I like white laced dresses so much. Obviously ignoring the illegal shit she did. BUT MY GOD I LOVE HER MORE THAN I CAN DESCRIBE.
Luke from TWDG: LOVE HIM LOVE HIM LOVE HIM LOVE HIM. He deserves the world and everything, and literally just everything in the world. (very good gentle giant for a tiny)
Steve Harrington: tHE CRUSH I HAD ON JOE KEERY OMGOMGOMG. HIS HAIR.
Chell from Portal: I know I know, she’s silent, and in a way, has zero personality, but I love her. Specifically her outfit in Portal 2.
Monika from DDLC: My precious bb. That’s all I have to say.
Spider-man: Any spider-man. Literally the only superhero I care about at all.
Vanessa from FNAF: TOP TEN TOP TEN. My OC came before her, which is why her looking incredibly similar to my OC automatically made me love her, and now I actually love her sfm.
Lucy Heartfilia: Could say my OC got her name from her, will get further into Fairy Tail things later.
Gray Fullbuster: Loved him since his first line ever. I don’t wanna spoil it if you’ve never watched Fairy Tail, so if you’re actually reading this, I’ll let you do that yourself.
Nonon Jakuzure: Love her so so much, which leads to the next character as well.
Viridi from Kid Icarus: ^^^^^
Sonic: Mostly Sonic from Sonic Boom.
Melia from Xenoblade: POOR BB
This is it for characters. This will probably be added to because I forgot some.
Games are next! From here on out, there probably won’t be descriptions.
Kid Icarus: Uprising
The Walking Dead Games
Resident Evil: 2, 3, and 4 remakes (yes i know i’m a remake enjoyer, but i never really resonated with the originals)
Hi-Fi Rush
Persona 5 Royal
Far Cry 5
Xenoblade (the first one)
Will add more as needed.
Shows!
MHA
Maid Sama
Fairy Tail
Kill la Kill
Charlotte
Will add more as needed!
For now I believe this is fine!!! Questions you have for me are ok, but eventually I’ll add answers to more common questions on here!

Oh my goodness I loved this. 1x01 of The Winchesters, let's goooooo.
This was a strong pilot episode, the whole cast is excellent with each bringing their own energy and doing well with the hints of depths to come on all of them. The John-Mary-Carlos-Latika interplay really snaps, and there's the different relationships inside the group, surrounding John and Mary's early connection and pining. But all these friendships and relationships are going to be really fun to watch unfold. Millie and Ada are luminous, both serving in the gravitas roles to flank the main four and add some ballast.
Really enjoying the entire gestalt of this, the look, tone, and visual style. Those NOLA locations are gorgeous and the perfect backdrop--they filmed at an old fort for this one.
The arcane lore and books and hidden chambers, the monsters, the family multigenerational traumas and secrets, it even goes a bit Indiana Jones mood a few times which is a delightful flourish.
The core driving theme of it being about connections and family and friendships and all kinds of love, the hurt in their back stories. John coming back from 'Nam already having nightmares on the bus to Lawrence. John having a sweetness and innocence to him but the darkness is already starting to show. We are going to see him utterly "ruined." Millie trying so hard to save and protect her son, to protect what is left of her fractured family, but also knowing she has to let him find his own path. Mary's closeness to her family, the trust she has with her father, but also aching to escape that life. Her bossiness and her hard facade while she keeps showing what a soft heart she has. Her grief for her cousin Maggie who was like a sister to her. (Maggie flashbacks when????) John and Mary both looking for missing fathers. Carlos losing his whole family to a monster and knowing how grim things are for hunters yet has his unquenchable spirit and he's every bit a tough, skilled hunter, but also plays guitar and relishes humor. Latika just starting to get out there in the field as a hunter, with her main strength right now her intellect but we know she's going to do more than just that. I'm so curious to see her have to kill something and get blood-splattered and see her shock at what she just did and at the same time want to protect her from all harm. Latika seems like a gentle heart who is going to be capable of ruthlessness when it's needed. Ada in just a few introductory moments already clearly a caring, strong willed person who refuses to quit fighting, and is already in the thick of it with the hunter team.
There's a lot here already with loss and trying to save the ones you've got. Carlos killed the ghoul that killed his family but couldn't save them. Millie having Henry slip away from her, and not able to save her son, but trying to. Mary unable to save her cousin Maggie, and now trying to find and save her father. John unable to save Murph and now haunted by his memory. Latika unlocking the dark forces of the monster trap box to save everybody from the loup-garou.
And there's our Dean. Standing by the side of the road, writing in his journal, telling the story and putting together the pieces of the past, to help make sense of who he is and where he came from, and he's picking his own music. Reclaiming the narrative like the badass he always is.

Carlos and Grace save the world
Carlos is surprised at first when Grace seeks him out, but when she explains that she’s worried about her neighbor possibly being abused by her husband, Carlos instantly agrees to help.
They become friends.
+
The story I wish they had in 2x05
(I started working on this about two weeks ago when we heard that Grace and Carlos would have a story together in the last episode. I then put it on hold to work on the tarlos valentine’s event. At the time, I was worried that the story would be pointless after the episode, and then the episode happened, and the story was given about a minute of airtime, so I figured I would finish this.)
Warnings for: Mentions of Domestic Abuse, Threats of Violence, and Knife injury.
Carlos will admit he’s a little surprised when Grace seeks him out. They don’t really know each other that well. The only interaction they really have is when he’s answering one of her dispatch calls. Or when the 126 is having some kind of gathering at the station like now.
Still, they don’t really talk.
“Officer Reyes?” she greets him with a tentative smile, coming up to him as he pours himself a glass of water. Around them, the 126 and extended friends and family mingle. They’d finally come together to honor Tim the way they couldn’t when the wildfires were roaring.
“Mrs. Ryder, hello,” he answers politely. He points at the pitcher of cold water in his hand, offering to pour her some.
“I’m good,” she answers with a shake of her head and another smile. “And please, call me Grace.”
“Only if you call me Carlos, ma’am,” he gives her a smile of his own; it grows as she lets out an amused chuckle and nods in agreement.
“Okay, that’s a deal.”
“Good,” he says jokingly. He puts the pitcher back in the fridge before turning to give her his full attention, frowning when he finds her fidgeting, shifting from foot to foot nervously. “Is something wrong?”
“I’m not sure,” Grace blurts out, looking as surprised as him. “I wanted to talk to you about something, but now I’m not sure if I should, or if it’s any of my business – or if I’m even just imagining things and overreacting.”
Carlos raises an eyebrow at the woman’s run-on sentence. “Well,” he starts off slowly and with caution. “I know we don’t know each other very well – ”
“We should change that,” Grace interrupts him with a kind smile on her pretty face.
“I completely agree,” Carlos concurs, liking Grace’s welcoming presence even before this conversation. “But what I do know about you is that you just don’t seem like the type of person who overreacts. So why don’t you tell me what’s going on, and we’ll see if I can help,” he finishes with what he hopes is an encouraging look.
“TK got himself a good one,” she says with a fondness that makes him blush slightly. “Okay, so I have this new neighbor, Rosie,” she starts to tell him.
Carlos listens as Grace explains about the newly married couple on her block, Rosie, a jumpy young thing, and her husband, Derek. He frowns as Grace tells him about her first encounter with them, the way the girl went from friendly and lively when they were alone in her front yard to subdued the moment her husband showed up.
“I can’t explain it,” Grace lets out a frustrated exhale. “He was friendly enough; he didn’t grab her in any way that would raise concerns, and yet alarm bells went off the moment he walked up to us. Even as she was smiling, there was something in her eyes that has stuck with me.” Grace sighs again. “Like I said, maybe I’m overreacting, looking for trouble where there isn’t any.”
“Grace,” Carlos starts with a shake of his head. “I have been on a number of your calls, and I hear you over the radio. You are an amazing operator because you have good instincts. If you’re worried about this girl, I don’t doubt you saw a reason for it. What does Judd say?”
Grace’s expression softens at the mention of her husband, her eyes shining with love and affection. “I haven’t told him yet. Judd, bless him, is so tenderhearted and protective. If I said to him that I think something is wrong with this slip of a girl, you better believe he would be pounding down their door before we even find out if something is really wrong.”
Carlos gives her an understanding smile. “Sounds like TK,” he tells her, earning a chuckle in return.
“Why do you think they clashed when they first started working together?” she questions with a twinkle in her eye that lets him know she’s heard as many complaints about TK from Judd as he’s heard from TK about her husband. “Those two are reckless softies who want to save the whole world, and if no one is there to check them, they dive in headfirst,” she says with a pointed look at him.
“Is that supposed to be us?” he questions jokingly. “We’re going to keep them in check?”
Grace shrugs easily. “Well, I married mine, so I pretty much signed up for the job. You’re still dating, so that’s up to you to decide.”
“Can you be my support group?” he questions. It’s not like he really needs to decide after all. He might not be married to TK yet, but he has known since the night of the solar flares and maybe even before that, that it’s his job to keep TK safe.
Grace grins at him, her eyes crinkling at the corners from her smile. “We can meet on Wednesdays for pie.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Carlos says easily, only half-joking. He likes Grace’s easy energy and can see himself becoming good friends with her. “Now, how do I help you with Rosie?”
֎֎֎
“You and Grace were talking for a while back at the station.”
Carlos looks up from the book in his hand over at TK as he comes out of the bathroom into his bedroom. He licks his lips as he takes his boyfriend in, dressed only in a pair of grey sweats that rest low on his hips.
“Carlos?” TK questions as he runs a towel over his hair, a smile taking over his face when Carlos jerks his gaze from all the tantalizing skin.
“Huh?” he questions, blinking a few times, hoping to focus. He blushes slightly at the knowing chuckle TK gives him in response.
TK throws the towel in the hamper before he crosses the distance to him. He presses a knee on the bed by his thigh, throwing the other over him.
Carlos quickly drops his book on the bedside table, freeing his hands to place them on TK’s hips as he comes to sit on his lap. He runs his thumbs over the soft skin right at the edge of TK’s sweats. This time it’s his turn to smile in satisfaction as the simple touch causes TK to shiver under it, his eyes going hazy and soft as he looks down at him.
“Don’t think you’re distracting me,” TK accuses him softly, even as he sits more firmly on Carlos’ lap, arching into his touch as he moves his hands from his hips to his back, fingers touching the constellation of freckles he now knows by memory. “You two looked deep in conversation. Is everything okay?”
“Grace has a neighbor she’s worried about,” he tells him, watching as TK goes from soft to tense and alert. “She has a bad feeling about the woman’s husband and asked for my opinion as a cop.”
TK frowns, concern replacing the previously touch-induced daze on his face. It’s not surprising to Carlos in the least. He’s pretty sure he’s never met anyone more empathetic than his boyfriend.
“Does she think he’s hurting her?” he asks, worrying his bottom lip in distress.
Carlos runs his hands up and down TK’s back once more, this time not to arouse but comfort. “Maybe,” he says with caution. From everything Grace told him, he understands her worry, but he also doesn’t want to make up an opinion before having all the facts. “She’s going to visit her tomorrow with some food as a late ‘welcome to the neighborhood’ thing, and asked me to tag along.”
TK bites down on his lip even harder, causing Carlos to reach up and press his thumb against it until he releases it. “Hey,” he starts softly. He tips TK’s chin to look at him in the eyes. “It’s fine. I’m just going for support and to offer a helping hand if there’s something to Grace’s concerns.”
“You’ll be careful?” TK questions, his voice low and worried. “Domestic situations have a way of spiraling out of control quickly.”
“Of course,” he answers, tugging TK forward. He lets out a content sound as TK settles on top of him. He turns his face into TK’s damp hair, giving it a kiss. “Everything will be fine, I promise,” he whispers, holding his boyfriend close.
Later, the promise will ring loudly in his ears.
֎֎֎
“Relax,” he says to Grace quietly as they stand on Rosie’s front steps. He arrived at the Ryder’s home thirty minutes earlier and waited as Grace finished her peach cobbler before they crossed the street, food in hand. “You’re just being friendly, and I’m tagging along for the ride.”
“Right,” Grace murmurs back as she presses the doorbell. She spares him a look with a raised brow. “That’s a nice shirt, by the way.”
“TK got it for me a few weeks ago,” he says, running a hand down the light-weight cream color polo. “The color makes me look less intimidating, don’t you think?”
Grace’s mouth quirks upward in amusement. “Carlos, sweetheart, you’re massive. I don’t think a soft-colored shirt will hide what you’re packing. Luckily you have a kind, gentle face to balance out all those muscles.”
Carlos grins at her, his smile growing when she rolls her eyes at him. “Yeah, you’re cute,” she mocks sarcastically, her dimples winking at him.
Carlos laughs at the begrudging compliment and Grace’s teasing ways. It reminds him a lot of his sisters and the way they gently like to mess with him. He’s still mid-laugh when a young woman with long light-brown hair and big green eyes opens the door. Her eyes remind him of TK, and he instantly feels protective of her. He remembers Grace calling her a slip of a girl, and he understands why. She’s small and sweet-looking in a heavy long sleeve shirt and print leggings.
“Grace?” she questions curiously, her eyes shifting quickly from Grace to him and back again.
“Hi Rosie,” Grace greets her with a bright smile that convincingly hides the tension she had moments ago. “This is my friend Carlos,” she points to him, not adding anything else. Better to keep her attention off him as he studies her. He takes in her clothes again, the shirt so big the sleeves come down to her fingertips, the thickness odd for the current warm weather. “He was visiting, and I mentioned I hadn’t had a chance to properly welcome you to the neighborhood, so we made you cobbler. Can we come in?”
Carlos smiles in what he hopes is friendly and reassuring as Rosie sneaks a look at him again. She looks over her shoulder towards the inside of the house before giving them a nod. “Sure, Derek is not home anyway,” she says, stepping aside to let them in.
He lets Grace cross the threshold first, but not before sharing a pointed look with his friend. The mention of her husband and her being comfortable with letting them in because he isn’t home already setting an alarm off for him.
“Sorry about the mess,” she says as she follows them into the living room, where there are still a few moving boxes on the floor. “I haven’t had a chance to put everything away,” she says with a self-conscious chuckle. “I can’t make up my mind where I want things to go. It drives Derek crazy.”
“It’s fine,” he tells her with an understanding smile, speaking for the first time. “When I first moved into my place, it took me a month to put up curtains because I couldn’t decide what color I wanted.”
Rosie gives him a small smile, her shoulders relaxing slightly at his comment. It only makes Carlos more tense and aware. He’s already starting to see what Grace was talking about. Even with the friendly smile on the girl’s face, there is an air of tension around her as she moves – the slightest shake of her hands as she takes the cobbler from Grace while she asks where Derek is.
“Oh, who knows,” she answers with a smile that looks more like a grimace. “He likes to wander about. This looks delicious Grace, thank you. I can’t bake to save my life,” she says with an awkward laugh. “I’ll serve some up, be right back.”
They watch Rosie walk into the kitchen silently before they turn to each other.
“Okay,” he starts once they’re alone. “You’re right something is up. She’s nervous, even scared. She only let us in because he’s not here, and I don’t like how she put herself down twice already, like someone who’s used to hearing negative things about themselves.”
“It’s pretty warm for a sweater today,” Grace comments quietly, her brow wrinkling in the middle as she frowns. “I don’t want to be right about this, Carlos,” she whispers, obviously pained by the idea.
Carlos has only known Rosie for a few minutes, and he knows exactly how she feels. He opens his mouth to reassure her that they will not leave without helping the young woman when the front door opens and the hairs on the back of his neck rise.
Derek – is almost as tall as him but slimmer, with limp, dirty blond hair and cold blue eyes. He has a mean look on his face that Carlos doesn’t like one bit.
“Who the fuck are you?” he sneers at them, making zero effort to hide the fact that he is not happy they’re in his home.
“Derek!” Rosie exclaims as she walks back into the living room with two small plates in her hands. Her eyes are wide as she looks at her husband. “Hi, baby,” she says, trying to smooth her expression out but failing as her eyes dart back and forth rapidly. “You remember Grace, right? She’s our neighbor from across the street.”
“Hello again, Derek,” Grace greets him, but there isn’t a hint of a smile on her face as she looks at him like a bug.
Derek notices if the way his eyes narrow is anything to go by. He turns to him with a raised eyebrow. “And you? Who are you?”
Carlos wonders for a second how he should play this, but as he catches Derek’s angry looks at his wife and how Rosie seems to be shrinking into herself the longer she stands by the archway of the room, he decides to rip the bandaid off and let the chips fall where they may. “I’m a friend of Grace’s, Officer Carlos Reyes with Austin Police.”
The reactions are, unfortunately, instant. Rosie drops one of the plates she’s holding in fright while Derek snaps his neck to look at her.
“What the fuck have you been saying?” he questions her, taking a menacing step forward.
Carlos moves too, getting in the space between them, holding up his hands defensively to Derek. “Back up, man,” he warns him, his voice hardening.
The ugly twist of Derek’s face grows nastier, meaner, and now that he’s closer, Carlos can smell the bourbon coming off him.
“Seriously, Derek, back the fuck up,” he grits out through clenched teeth when the guy takes another step forward, ignoring his warnings.
“You don’t tell me what to do,” Derek all but shouts angrily. “This is my house, and I’ll do whatever the hell I want.”
“Like hurt Rosie?” Grace asks him with a stern look, and while Carlos understands the sentiment, he groans internally at the question and the way it takes Derek’s focus off him to Grace. Behind him, he can hear Rosie quietly crying.
“And what if I do,” Derek questions with another sneer. “What are you or anyone else going to do about it? She’s my wife. I can do what I want with her.”
Grace looks at Derek with the same look of disgust he feels. Quietly he pulls out his phone and sends a quick message to his partner, grateful he had the forethought of mentioning the situation to her before he came.
“Only cowards hurt their wives,” Grace answers with another nauseated look and shake of her head.
Carlos admires her bravery. It proves the wrong thing to say, though, as Derek sticks his hand in his pocket and Carlos catches a flash of silver.
“You have a smart mouth on you, don’t ya?” Derek snarls at Grace with a switchblade in his hand.
He moves, and Carlos does too without really thinking. Like with Rosie, he gets between Derek and Grace, only this time Derek is ready, and he swings his knife-carrying hand at him.
Grace and Rosie both shout, Grace quickly moving out of the way and towards the young woman when she tries to step forward to intervene.
“Derek, stop!”
“Put the knife down, Derek! He’s a cop!”
Derek doesn’t listen to either of them, and neither can Carlos, as he jumps back to avoid the knife being lunged at him. The fight happens for Carlos in a blur as he tries to avoid the blade, disarm Derek and keep him from turning his rage toward Rosie or Grace.
“Please stop!” Rosie screams again, loud, and so scared it breaks Carlos’ focus for a moment. Unfortunately, it’s a moment too long, and he lets out a shout of his own as the knife pierces his skin on the left side of his flank.
Grace shouts, alarmed. “Carlos!”
He holds her back with one hand as she rushes towards him. She shoves it away, placing hers on his wound to put pressure as his shirt quickly stains with his blood.
Derek stares wide at him, the realization of what he’s done coming over his face. He doesn’t have a chance to react further than that as Austin Police barges through the door, Carlos’ partner at the front.
Carlos leans on Grace heavily, and Rosie comes forward to help him stay up as the three of them watch Derek be dragged to his knees and handcuffed.
“You can’t stay out of trouble even on your day off, Reyes,” his partner shakes his head at him before signaling for EMS to come in.
He tries to roll his eyes at her, but he’s starting to feel lightheaded, and he’s just grateful when the gurney rumbles in.
Rosie and Grace hand him off, but not before Rosie apologizes, he tries to reassure her, but he finds it hard to speak as he gets sleepier. He thinks he hears Grace tell her it’s not her fault, and he nods tiredly in agreement.
Looking over at Grace, he smiles, hoping it will ease the worried look on her face. “TK is gonna be pissed about the shirt,” he jokes right before he passes out.
֎֎֎
Carlos wakes up to bright lights in his eyes. He groans, annoyed at them as he tries to cover his face and finds that he’s tugging on his IV.
The hospital, shit.
“Everything will be fine, I promise,” says a soft mocking voice to his right, and when he turns his head, he’s not at all surprised to find TK sitting there with a raised eyebrow, trying to hide his worry behind a sarcastic look. “Getting stabbed, needing surgery, and having your spleen removed doesn’t scream ‘everything is fine’ Carlos Reyes.”
“Hey, baby,” he rasps out, his throat dry like the Sahara. “Sorry about that.”
TK gets up with a deep sigh. He crosses the distance to him and leans down, pressing a kiss on his forehead before he lays his against Carlos’. “You were being a big damn hero, so I forgive you,” he whispers as he touches his nose to Carlos’. “But if you can please avoid getting hurt while you save the world next time, I would appreciate it.”
Carlos makes a humming noise in the back of his throat, closing his eyes for a moment as he basks in TK’s closeness.
“I would have to agree.”
Carlos opens his eyes to find two other people in the room he didn’t notice before. Grace and Judd sit on the other two chairs of the room, both standing when he looks over at them. They walk together to the foot of his bed, and Grace wraps her hand around his ankle, giving it a squeeze.
“If we are going to be friends and go on adventures together, you can’t end up stabbed, honey,” she says with a sweet smile on her face.
“Carlos and Grace save the world,” TK says with a proud but dry smile. He looks over at Judd, sharing a look with the older man. “God help us, brother,” he says, getting a severe nod in return from the cowboy, while Grace scoffs at both of them.
“We didn’t save the world,” Carlos protests at the repeat of those words.
“Tell that to that sweet, scared little thing you two helped get away from her abusive husband,” Judd answers, still somber.
“Yeah,” TK agrees with a nod. He combs a soothing hand through Carlos’ curls. “Pretty sure Rosie would tell you differently.”
“Is she okay?” He asks, seeking Grace’s eyes, letting a relieved exhale when she nods.
“Your partner had a social worker ready, and they are setting her up as we speak,” Grace assures him. “She said thank you.”
Carlos lets out another deep breath. “That’s good.”
Grace looks at him for a moment with a small frown on her face. “You had them ready, even when we weren’t sure if I was right – “
“I trust your judgment, Grace,” he interrupts, answering her silent question. “You knew – so I prepared.”
Grace gives his ankle another squeeze, and Carlos nods at her in understanding.
“We should go,” she says with a smile. “I’m sure TK wants to scold you some more and then smother you with kisses.”
TK lets out a sound of protest that has Judd snorting. It makes Carlos chuckle despite the pain it causes.
“Pie on Wednesday?” he asks Grace, grinning at the twinkle that enters her eyes as she smiles back widely at him.
“I’ll see you in my kitchen – 4ish?” she points at him. She starts to turn with Judd after he agrees, but the older man stands still, looking at him.
“Thanks for keeping my baby safe, brother,” Judd says to him quietly.
Carlos swallows hard, the weight of the words impacting him. He looks up at TK to find him staring at him with a soft loving look on his face. “You keep mine safe all the time, just returning the favor.”
The Ryders both smile at him as they leave; Grace makes a signal that she’ll call him, blowing him and TK a kiss before closing the door, leaving them alone.
“So you and Grace are friends now.”
“Yeah,” Carlos answers, smiling at the comment and how true it is. They’re friends now.
“That’s cool,” TK says, smiling as he sits at the edge of his bed. “But for mine and Judd’s sake, can you two keep the dangerous situations to a minimum?”
Carlos snorts at the comment, grinning when TK rolls his eyes.
“Yeah, I know,” he grumbles sarcastically. “Look who’s talking, right?”
“You said it, not me.”
TK shakes his head, but his expression goes soft as he looks at him. “I was so scared when Grace called me,” he tells him with a trembling smile. “But then she told us how you kept her and Rosie safe, and I was so proud of you, baby.”
Carlos reaches for him, tugging on his hand until TK gets the hint, and lies next to him on the small bed, resting his head on Carlos’ shoulder, his arm going around him, careful of his wound.
“I love you,” TK whispers into the slope of his neck.
Carlos closes his eyes as tiredness starts to take over again. He’s in some mild pain, and he’s sure there is gonna be a mountain of paperwork later waiting for him, but Grace and Rosie are safe, and he’s in TK’s arms, so everything is okay in his book.
He turns his face towards TK’s, finding it inches away as TK looks up at him.
Pressing a kiss against his lips, swallowing the soft, peaceful sigh TK lets out, he whispers back. “I love you too.”

YOUR ANALYSIS OF THE HUG JUST MADE ME SO HAPPY SO SO HAPPY I have a question for you now what do you think of TK grabbing Carlos’ hand because I just can’t GET OVER IT he’s so tentative but confident in his decision and then he places their intertwined fingers on his stomach AND CRADLES CARLOS’ HAND WITH HIS OWN IN HIS SWEATSHIRT POCKET?!?!?!? I’m so in love with these two they give us so much <3<3
Anon, bless you for appreciating that nearly 3,000-word diatribe about a moment that literally lasts for 2 seconds - a moment that I will truly never recover from, let’s be honest. I’m so glad that you love it too!
At the end of that post I mentioned the hand-holding moment in their final scene, but you’re totally right - I think that moment deserves its own post. This won’t be as long as the last one, since in a lot of ways the hand-holding moment is an extension of the things that are expressed in the hug moment, but I’ve definitely got some things to say!
So, the first thing to know about me: HAND-HOLDING. IS. MY. SHIT.
I can’t pin-point exactly when that became my favorite form of intimacy, but I would wager a guess that Pride and Prejudice (2005) had a lot to do with it - this takes the cake as my favorite hand-holding moment, it is what it is. Also, just... hands. Things like this post that I came across this week just completely wreck my entire soul:
I think holding someone’s hand can be the most intimate and personal form of support and comfort. Like, think about it: it’s hard to subtly hug or kiss someone in a room of people; it’s really likely that someone would notice. But, holding someone’s hand? Linking pinkies? Knuckles brushing? “Palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss”?? It can be so quiet, so personal. Just for the two people involved.
Hand-holding can be private and gentle, it can be purposeful (let’s link hands so that I can guide you somewhere, or because we don’t want to get lost/separated) or just because you crave someone’s touch (see: the screenshot above). Hand-holding is an act so simple, so common, but it can speak volumes, and I honestly just cannot get enough of it. Every hand-holding moment that I get to witness will light me on fire because I truly am trash for intimacy and love.
youtube
So, here’s what I said about the hand-holding moment in my hug analysis post:
I honestly cannot wait for season 2. This hug and the final scene on the hood of Carlos’s car - with TK again making the move to embrace their relationship by physically reaching into Carlos’s space for his hand and dragging it into his own space, firmly opening the door to his heart to let him inside, while also settling Carlos’s hand between his own to let him know that he’s willing to protect him and his heart too - makes me believe that we are in for some truly wonderful romance with these boys.
This scene, like the hug, took me completely by surprise. I would’ve definitely put money on this season ending with the breakup scene, and the possibility of their future up in the air until season 2. I am obviously SO GLAD that that is not what happened - plus, the final episode really does a great job of giving TK a full season arc, so it’s just better writing to include the moments with Carlos.
The above clip is 35-seconds long, so let’s see how many words it takes for me to break it down 😅
Right from the very beginning, I’m drawn to their body language. They are almost perfect mirror images of one another as they lay on top of the hood: outer legs are bent, with the foot flat. Inner legs are more elongated, though I can’t help but notice how Carlos’s right leg is bent towards TK (why is this scene so dark, it’s so hard to see, wah). They will continue to mirror each other in a lot of ways throughout the scene, which I’ll be sure to point out.
Like the hug scene before, they seem very casual, and as comfortable as a person can be on the hood of a car - blankets probably would’ve been nice, Carlos!
However, I think there are subtle indications that they don’t have everything figured out - both of TK’s hands are hidden inside of his pocket and Carlos’s hand is more closed than open.
Again, for a person who loves them so much, I don’t spend a lot of time studying hand analysis, but I do know that hidden hands - in pockets, in gloves, behind your back, etc - has a lot of meaning. While I pointed out that Carlos seems to be positioned towards TK, TK is very much in his own space on the hood of the car. He’s still a little wary, maybe? Still a little unsure, possibly?
I think the concept of personal space is so interesting. A chunk of my hug analysis included the idea that Carlos was on the edge of TK’s space (the fire station), but refused to enter on his own, and that TK came to him and entered his space instead. They never actually enter the fire station together; they stay right there at the door, merging their spaces right on the edge of their own two worlds.
That’s why I think this scene is an extension of that physical conversation. Because this is the scene where we actually get to see TK fully invite Carlos into his space - basically dragging him there by the hand. By the end of this scene, there is no question in our minds where these two are going to go from here. We didn’t need Tim Minear to tell us that they are going to date next season, it’s completely obvious after this moment.
I’m getting ahead of myself.
I also want to point out Carlos’s right hand at the beginning of the scene, since it gets a starring role later. Remember that at the end of the hug scene, his hands are open and flat on TK’s back, indicating that he was open and willingly vulnerable in that moment. Now, his hand is closed. Not clenched, not fisted, but definitely less open than before.
All of this to say, the hug was a moment of open and vulnerable physical connection between them, and this moment does not really start out that way.
I think it’s because they both know they have things to talk about, and talking can kind of go either way with them. The last time they really talked on-screen, they “broke up,” so maybe now they’re a little uncertain how this is going to go, even though they both know that they want it. It’s like, being certain of the theory behind something, and then having to put it into practice; it can be scary.
So, Carlos makes a move and asks a question - “What are you thinking?”
Their bodies don’t move at all. There’s no rush, no hurry. They are certain about their physical connection, but that’s not what this moment is for them. It’s all about their words and thoughts, so their bodies stay out of it for now.
Mirror images: first line Carlos says, he’s looking up. First line TK says, he’s looking up. Second line Carlos says, he looks over at TK. Second line TK says, he looks over at Carlos.
I just love when they look at each other. Love is so beautiful, y’all.
AND NOW WE GET TO THE HANDS.
TK pulls his left hand from his pocket - from where it’s protected, from where it’s hidden - and he breaks into Carlos’s space. Just like the hug scene was about TK coming towards Carlos, this is that same movement. TK comes to him again, almost like a reminder of what that hug meant.
I love that TK looks down to link his hands with Carlos’s, but Carlos keeps his eyes on TK’s face, almost like he’s still trying to read into his mind. He’s watching his face, trying to see through him, discover everything he might not be saying. This man is so soft, so observant and attentive, and my heart can’t handle it.
Carlos’s right hand might be slightly closed and facing away from TK, but that doesn’t stop him from grabbing it and linking their fingers together anyway. TK’s up to the challenge!
We won’t talk about the intimacy of where Carlos’s hand is resting, and how TK doesn’t even second-guess going there - BUT I KNOW YOU ALL SEE IT
(I mean, I will talk about it just to say that if there is one thing these two know about each other, it’s that they don’t hold back on a physical level, so why should TK?)
I. AM. OBSESSED. with the way TK’s fingers kind of wrap around and spider through Carlos’s fingers - it’s not a super easy feat, it takes some maneuvering, but he seems super determined.
Carlos definitely doesn’t fight him on it, his hand willingly opens and moves to make the linking possible/easier.
THERE IS THIS BEAUTIFUL MOMENT WHERE THEIR HANDS ARE MID-LINK AND THEY ARE BOTH LOOKING DOWN AT THEM AND I SWEAR TO GOD IT’S A RENAISSANCE PAINTING Y’ALL (SCREENSHOT BELOW) IT IS SO STUNNING. I AM STUNNED.
TK pulls Carlos’s hand into his lap, dropping it down softly onto of the pocket and, as you pointed out anon, right on top of his other hand
Their eyes immediately return to each other and the love??? is ICONIC???
But like, this is where this moment becomes an extension of the hug moemnt.
See, whereas that moment was TK entering Carlos’s space, this is TK saying “I want you with me, over here in my world, by my side, in my hands, I think it’s where you belong”
And not only that, but by cradling Carlos’s hand in-between his own, shielding it from the elements - I mean, looks back at the scene, Carlos’s hand is basically hidden - he’s also saying “I’m gonna protect you, and take care of you, if you let me. I don’t want to hurt you anymore”
Because I think TK knows this has all been hard on Carlos, the constant back-and-forth and uncertainly has left him really vulnerable.
And just like Carlos pressed both of his open hands to TK’s lower back during the hug to shield such a vulnerable area from harm, TK now shields Carlos from harm. Reassures him that he’s steady now. That he’s ready for them.
(Also the heart eyes at the end of this scene and the way TK definitely stares at Carlos’s mouth for a moment?? THESE TWO TOTALLY MADE OUT AFTER THIS.)

What you should watch while staying at home part 2! AKA the Disney+ list based off the U.S selection.
Disney+
Lab Rats (TV show)
Rating: TV-Y7
Summary: A scrawny 14-year-old, having discovered his inventor stepdad has three bionic, super-powered teens living cloistered in a secret lab beneath their home, brings them out into the world.
Seasons: all four seasons and the spin-off are on Disney+, except for part 2 of Lab Rats vs. Mighty Med because that is a Mighty Med episode and Mighty Med is not on Disney+ at the time of this post.
Why you should watch it: Lab Rats was the reason I started writing fanfiction (if you're brave and like first person fics, my profile on fanfiction.net under the name Brentinator is full of cringe worthy fics) and it's probably the reason that I like action/adventure so much. It's super funny, it's very dramatic and it has good messages about family and teamwork.
Kickin' It (TV show)
Rating: TV-Y7
Summary: A once-in-a-generation young karate fighter named Jack joins the Wasabi warriors.
Seasons: 1-4 on Disney+
Why you should watch it: it's a comedy about teenagers in a karate dojo. Yeah, it's Disney so it is cringy, but it makes for some good laughs. Leo Howard is a little cutie, there's an episode with Billy Unger (Lab Rats) and Kelli Berglund (Lab Rats). There's some whump in a bit of it, and Jason Earles (Miley's brother in Hannah Montana) is the sensei. It's great.
Austin and Ally (TV show)
Rating: TV-Y7
Summary: Following the lives of Austin, an aspiring confident musician, Ally, a quiet talented songwriter and their two friends.
Seasons: 1-4 on Disney+, part two of the New Year's special is season 2, episode six of Jessie.
Why should you watch it: this was the first Disney Channel show I watched. Ross Lynch was my first celebrity crush, the first soundtrack was my first CD, and Trish gave me some representation as a plus sized woman/teen. It's pretty cringe, but the songs are all amazing and some of jokes are knee slappers.
Good Luck Charlie (TV show)
Rating: TV-Y7
Summary: The Duncan family are adjusting to the surprise birth of their fourth child, Charlie. When parents Amy and Bob return to work they put their latest addition in the care of her three older siblings.
Seasons: all seasons and the movie in between seasons 2 and 3 on Disney+, the second part of the Christmas episode in season 4 is in season 3 of Jessie.
Why should watch it: it's just a good comedy about a family with a lot of kids.
Brave (movie)
Rating: PG
Summary: Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida (Kelly Macdonald) defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.
Why should you watch it: this movie holds a very special place in my heart. I watched this movie with my grandpa the Christmas before he died, and it's a memory I hold very close. It's also the best Disney princess with red hair, fight me. And my Merdia Halloween costume where I carried around my dad's bow and arrows can't be beat.
Chicken Little (movie)
Rating: G
Summary: After ruining his reputation with the town, a courageous chicken must come to the rescue of his fellow citizens when aliens start an invasion.
Why should you watch it: a lot of people say this is Disney's worst animated movie. But this is a very nostalgic movie for me, and some of the jokes can't be beat. Also, aliens.
Bad Hair Day (movie)
Rating: TV-G
Summary: A buddy comedy about a high school tech-whiz whose prom day abruptly shifts into a wild ride across town, thanks to a down-on-her-luck cop and a jewel thief.
Why should you watch it: it's Ally from Austin and Ally and the mom from Good Luck Charlie trying to protect a missing necklace, and the two of them grow a motner-daughter type relationship during it.
Descendants 2 (movie)
Rating: TV-G
Summary: Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jay try to adjust to life in Auradon, but Mal becomes overwhelmed with pressure and returns to her roots.
Why should you watch it: I love the Descendants franchise, but the second movie has the best songs, the best acting and the best villains. I'm obsessed with China Anne McClain and she's a great villain. But watch the first movie. After all, it has Dove Cameron, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson and the late Cameron Boyce with some of their best acting being displayed.
High School Musical 2 (movie)
Rating: TV-G
Summary: School's out for summer and the East High Wildcats are ready to make it the time of their lives after landing jobs in a wealthy country club owned by Sharpay and Ryan's family.
Why you should watch it: I'm not a huge HSM fan, but I love Sharpay and Ryan, and I love the movie that's on their turf. It also has my favorite HSM song in it, which is Bet On It. Probably watch the first movie first though.
Geek Charming (movie)
Rating: TV-G
Summary: To win a school popularity contest, a high school diva permits a film club classmate to record her popular life, but the film starts documenting her decline instead.
Why you should watch it: this is possibly my favorite DCOM, and Sarah Hyland is so good at her job, it's insane. It's overshadowed by what happened between the leads afterwards, however.
How to Build a Better Boy (movie)
Rating: TV-G
Summary: Teenage tech whizzes unwittingly use military software to program a robotic boyfriend.
Why you should watch it: probably why I like it so much is because it has China Anne McClain and Kelli Berglund, and it's a cool concept. Also has Noah Centerpiece if you like him as well.
Teen Beach Movie (movie)
Rating: not rated
Summary: Two surfing lovers, whose doomed relationship is nearing to a close, find themselves swept into a a dimension traversing wave that sends them into a beach movie musical in the 60's.
Why you should watch it: it's not a great plot, but the acting is pretty good and the songs are so amazing. Also, Ross Lynch. Not a huge fan of the sequel, but you should still check it out if you like the first one.
The Emperor's New Groove (movie)
Rating: G
Summary: Emperor Kuzco is turned into a llama by his ex-administrator Yzma, and must now regain his throne with the help of Pacha, the gentle llama herder.
Why should you watch it: this is the movie I grew up on. I knew all the quotes, I knew all the jokes, and one time I barged into my sister's youth group shouting "boom bam, baby!" It's so good and so funny.
Finding Nemo (movie)
Rating: G
Summary: After his son is captured in the Great Barrier Reef and taken to Sydney, a timid clownfish sets out on a journey to bring him home.
Why should you watch it: my other childhood movie. Also knew the quotes, and the jokes, and I spoke whale in church when I was very young. There may also be a Finding Nemo Irondad AU from me in the future.
Holes (movie)
Rating: PG
Summary: A wrongfully convicted boy is sent to a brutal desert detention camp where he joins the job of digging holes for some mysterious reason.
Why should you watch it: to this day this is the most accurate book to movie adaptation I've ever seen. Also, Madame Zeroni.
Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers (movie)
Rating: G
Summary: Mickey, Donald and Goofy are the French three Musketeers.
Why you should watch it: well, it's what the summary says. The Mickey Mouse gang as the musketeers. And it has la pit in it. "No, not la pit!"
Pocahontas (movie)
Rating: G
Summary: An English soldier and the daughter of an Algonquin chief share a romance when English colonists invade seventeenth century Virginia.
Why should you watch it: is it historically accurate, no. But does it have one of the sweetest romances in the history of Disney, I would like to think so. And Pocahontas is just one of my favorite Disney princesses, even if she's not technically a princess.
Tangled
Rating: PG
Summary: The magically long-haired Rapunzel has spent her entire life in a tower, but now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.
Why should you watch it: a carefree princess, a attractive and hilarious thief and the cutest little chameleon ever! The animation is gorgeous, the songs are amazing and Mother Gothel is such a good villain.
Pooh's Heffalump Movie (movie)
Rating: G
Summary: A Heffalump is heard trumpeting in the hundred acre woods. Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and Piglet are scared and rush to Rabbit's house for advice. Roo joins them and they all agree that Heffalumps are nearby after finding a huge footprint. They decide to set out on an expedition to catch the Heffalump. Roo is not allowed to come along because he is too little.
Why should you watch it: I watched a lot of Winnie the Pooh movies when I was little, because Winnie the Pooh is my mom's favorite Disney franchise, but this one is my favorite. It's so soft, and it has a good lesson that even if you're different, that doesn't mean you're evil or scary.
Read it and Weep (movie)
Rating: TV-G
Summary: A shy and retiring high school student develops a peculiar alter ego that changes her life forever.
Why should you watch it: it's about a writer in high school! This is one of my favorite Disney movies ever, and I highly recommend it to everyone.
Sky High (movie)
Rating: PG
Summary: Set in an era where superheroes are commonly known and accepted, young William Stronghold, the son of the Commander and Jetstream, tries to find a balance between being a normal teenager and an extraordinary being.
Why should you watch it: clearly, I like movies and shows about superheroes (I mean, I write for Marvel). This movie is about William, who hasn't gotten his powers yet, and has been lying to his parents that he has before he goes to superhero high school. The ending is weird, but I love this movie.
Tagging some people so it gets spread around: @marvelous-writer @clover-roseee @canary-warrior @blondsak @breanadaveport-mendel @seek-rest @willelbyers

so... cecilos. i literally had to stop listening to wtnv last night because i couldnt focus on anything else, i was so emotional, i just want carlos and cecil to reunite so badly. their relationship is one of the most genuine and heartfelt things ever. its so amazing. so i stopped listening and i wrote this completely cathartic thing, i just started writing and didnt stop until it was past 4am. its been a long time since ive just written something with no plan just straight from emotional overload, so it was kinda nice. i like how it turned out.
i’m only up to episode 56 so later canon might contradict something in this but idgaf honestly this is some sweet and heartfelt cecilos from the middle of the night. enjoy
Cecil awakes in the desert. There is sand all around him, warm and course against his skin. He isn't sure how he ended up here, having no memory of coming here, but he's woken up in weirder places in the past. He is used to deserts, but this desert is not his own. He can feel it. Something in the air is completely different here.
He rises, brushing the sand off of himself as best as he can, and has a look at his surroundings. There is just desert, as far as he can see. Sand wastes strewn with sad, tiny shrubs and the strangest cacti he has ever seen. There is also a distant, looming shape -- almost mountain-like in size and appearance, however, it's difficult to say what it could actually be. He decides to start his journey towards that shape, drawn to it for reasons he cannot explain. He treks for quite a long time.
As the mountain-like mass gets closer, he sees that there is a light, blinking high upon it. It is red. Blinking lights are always red. The colour evokes an emotion within him. He recognizes it. He knows where he must be. His toes tingle with excitement underneath his sand-covered shoes. There is someone here he is longing to see.
As he continues moving forward, his steps become rapid, and his breaths become strained. He is running now, defying gravity, floating now, flying at maximum speeds. He watches the vast desert pass beneath him, dry and lifeless.
Before he even knows it, Cecil is floating up to a lighthouse. His feet find their way to solid ground, and it is his heart that starts to float next. Leap, perhaps, would be a better word. He can feel his throat tightening as he meets the eyes of the white-coated man standing before him, blinking in awe and confusion.
“Cecil?”
“Carlos?”
“Cecil!”
Carlos throws himself into Cecil’s arms, laughing a joyous laugh that's riddled with secret tears and longing.
“I missed you,” says Carlos, smiling into Cecil’s chest.
“I missed you, too.” Cecil holds Carlos tightly. “Don't scare me like that. I thought you'd be gone forever. I respect your research, and your acts of valiant heroism, but… I just wanted you to come home, Carlos. I've missed you so much.”
“Gosh, Cecil, I… I’m sorry. I missed you, too, more than you could ever even know. I watched you sometimes. I watched you through the photographs in the lighthouse. I saw you frowning, grimacing, whispering for me in the dead of night. I wanted to tell you that I love you, but I didn't want you to be freaked out over me watching you… It sounds silly now, but…”
“That's okay, I understand. Forget all that, Carlos, just… Shut up and kiss me, please,” Cecil begs, not caring about anything right now. What's past is past, what's now is now. It doesn’t matter how many lonely nights he spent longing anymore, because those days will be over now. Carlos is home! Well, Cecil is trapped in this desert otherworld with him. So neither of them are home home, but they're at home with each other.
Kissing Carlos is home. Running his fingers through Carlos’ thick, wavy hair is home. Carlos’ hands cupping his waist, his hand cupping Carlos’ delicate cheek, is home. Carlos and him, kissing, rolling in the sand, laughing, breathless, giggling, touching, being… Home is Carlos. Cecil cares about nothing else anymore in this moment. He loves Night Vale, but he would honestly leave it all behind if it meant Carlos’ sandy, unwashed hair falling into his face, and the feeling of his back pressed against the gentle roll of a sand dune, and callused hands of a scientist stroking his face, as he’s propped up on one elbow above him, staring down at him, eyes filled with love behind dusty, smudged glasses.
Cecil’s mouth had fallen agape, but his eyes were smiling. Carlos’ eyes smiled, too. His perfect lips grinned. He kissed his boyfriend again, laughing bubbly and brightly. Cecil’s heart tightens, filled to the brim with love and adoration. Carlos’ laugh was perfect. His mouth was perfect, his eyes were perfect, his hair, perfect. All was perfect. Carlos was his yet again. He never wanted this moment to end.
But then, just as soon as it had began, it ends.
Cecil awakens, once again. This time, he is in his own bed. This time, alone.
“Oh,” he says simply. “Oh.”
A small, weak whimper slides past his lips.
“Oh, Carlos,” he whispers, as he often does, helplessly into the still of the night. “Oh, Carlos…”
He stares up at the ceiling above him. He clutches at the pillow beside him, empty, devoid of any luscious presence; of any stray perfect hairs to tickle his neck as he shifts under the covers in the night. He sighs.
He sits up on the edge of the bed. The red light from his phone charging on the bedside table creates the only light in the room. It blinks. For a moment, he knows that Carlos would probably be awake right now, being, of course, in a desert otherworld where time is completely different from here at home, but he doesn't think he would understand. Deep down, Cecil knows that Carlos would understand because Carlos loves him, and misses him, and cares about him deeply, but … everything seems so complicated right now. He could call, text, or email him right now, and possibly get an immediate response, but for some reason, he doesn’t.
“I miss you,” he sighs hopelessly instead, as if there might be someone around to hear. There is no one around to hear.
Cecil flops himself back down on his bed, exhaling, long and dramatic. He tries to return himself to the dull lull of sleep. His heart aches so painfully that it is hard to even imagine that Carlos is alive and well and just a click of a button away.
He quietly watches the blinking light on his phone blink for a while, before it dawns on him that blinking signifies a notification. A solid red light is for charging, and a blinking light means something else is happening. He wants to think that different colours of the blinking lights should signify something, but he knows that that's ridiculous, since blinking lights are always red.
He reaches over and collects his phone from the bedside table, and is surprised, not unpleasantly, to see the notification on the screen. It is a Snapchat from Carlos.
The photo is of the night sky. There are specks of stars, and other strange shapes and lights, all along a backdrop of a dark velvety purple. It's obviously hard to capture something like the sky in just a cell phone camera, but it looks remarkably familiar. The caption reads: “How’s my favourite radio host doing tonight?”
There is a subsequent Snap reading “Is it night there?” And another saying “I don't mean to wake you up or anything, if it is. But the sky reminded me of home, and of you.”
Cecil’s chest tightens. The messages are sweet, but he wants Carlos to be here, with him, right now! He can't take one more minute of this treacherous absence.
He half-heartedly lifts his phone above him to snap a photo, in which he is pouting, barely visible in the darkness, one cheek pressed against the pillow.
He types various iterations of whiny ‘I miss you’s and needy demands before backspacing and starting over from the beginning, chewing his lip in frustration and thought.
“Missing my favourite scientist tonight,” he captions it eventually, hitting send in a haste before he can think too deeply about any of it.
It takes less than a minute for Carlos to reply. He has switched to the inside camera of his phone, where he has a sympathetic, but genuine, sad smile.
“I miss you,” it reads.
Cecil has trouble breathing suddenly. He wants Carlos home. He needs Carlos home. It has been days, maybe even a week, since he has even heard Carlos’ voice, and his heart is screaming with longing. If he is free to send photos, maybe he will be free to call…
Cecil brings the phone up to his ear, and the first ring feels like it lasts a century. But a mere millisecond into the second, Carlos picks up.
“Cecil?”
“Carlos,” Cecil breathes, trembling.
“Cecil? Are you feeling alright?”
“It is so good to hear your voice. I’m-- yes, I'm fine, Carlos, I… I just… miss you. I miss you so, so much.”
“Oh, Cecil,” Carlos sighs a beautiful sigh. “I miss you, too.”
“You need to come home now, Carlos.”
“I understand, Cecil. But you know it's not as simple as that.”
Cecil wants to be mad, he wants to scream, he wants to yell at his beloved Carlos, to come home, come home right this instant, I need you to be home, but… he does know.
“I… I know,” he sighs eventually.
“You know I miss you, too,” says Carlos. His voice is genuine, but it just makes Cecil sad.
“I know,” he mumbles.
“Go look at the stars, Cecil.”
“The stars?”
“The stars. Just pull back your curtain and look at them, just for a moment.”
Cecil rises, and walks over to the bedroom window. He does as Carlos asks. The sky is velvet purple with flickers of stars and other distant shapes and lights. “I… am looking at them now. Is there some kind of special surprise here I’m supposed to see?”
“There's not really a special surprise, no. I’ve not found a way back home just yet. I’ve just been looking at the sky a lot recently, and I wanted to share it with you.”
Come to think if it… The sky in Carlos’ picture did look very similar to the sky here in Night Vale. The sky probably looks similar no matter where you go. It is so vast, and everything else is so tiny, so insignificant.
“No matter where we are in the world, there's always a beautiful sky to look at. And if we do it at the same time… it's almost like we’re together.”
Tears prick the corners of Cecil’s eyes. “Yeah?”
“Yeah. I really do miss home, Cecil. And I miss you. I guess in a way, you are my home.”
“Have you been dreaming of me at all?” Cecil asks suddenly, recalling the powerful sentiment of his dream.
“I… no, why?”
“Oh. I've dreamt of you a lot. I keep dreaming I'll wake up next to you, or that I’m out in your desert, with you… together. But it's not real... None of it is real. You're never going to be home, are you?”
Cecil’s voice is breaking, and Carlos’ heart feels like it's breaking, too. “Oh, Cecil… Cecil. Baby. Don’t say that…”
Cecil softens considerably at the pet name. Carlos has never called him one before. It's gentle. But there are still tears welling in the corners of his eyes, threatening, dangerous, ready to spill down his face at any moment. “It’s--it’s been forever, Carlos.”
“Oh, honey,” Carlos coos again. “Oh, Cecil. I'll be home soon. I promised. A scientist always keeps their promises. I'm sorry if I've been … distant, recently. I'm sorry if I've made you feel left out with my scientific interest in this world. I haven't exactly been trying very hard to get home to you. It’s not that I don't want to come home for you, it's just that it's so very strange here… So very compelling. You understand, right?”
“Not really, no,” Cecil admits finally. “I don't understand. The most compelling thing to me … is you! I just want you here, I just want… you,” he huffs.
Carlos is silent for a long, long moment.
“I didn't realize that was how you felt, Cecil… Gosh, I… I am so sorry. I've been a real jerk.”
“No, Carlos,” Cecil sighs. “You aren't a jerk. I mean, I was kind of mad at you when you called that community more interesting than my community, but you aren't a bad person… Okay, I was really mad. Is that vague, possibly nonexistent desert even really a community? I disagree with that terminology. And I disagree with your opinion on their ‘scientific interest’. But… that's… okay! You didn't mean any of that. You--you always mean well! I just need you to understand how much I miss you, Carlos. I want you here ... with me! And I want you to feel the same way I do.”
“I understand, Cecil. I completely and actually understand this time. Ugh, you just wanted to be together and I brushed you away to gush about some silly science stuff. I am so sorry! I wish I could be home right now. I'm sorry I haven't been looking for doors home. I will seriously get on that tomorrow, seriously. I- I should have been doing that already. God, I’m sorry. I want to be home. I do feel the same way. I've missed… Oh, oh dear... We've spent our anniversary apart, Cecil, haven’t we. How can I make it up to you?”
“It's okay, Carlos. Sometimes we get invested in things, and forget to care about other things. I forgive you.”
“Really?”
Cecil is still mad, but he isn't lying when he says he forgives Carlos. It's not his fault that he's trapped in that other dimension, and he won't be able to be home instantly no matter how hard he is willing to try. He is definitely mad about the anniversary, but he doesn't see any use in bringing that up right now. Carlos truly feels sorry. The feelings of anger will pass. “Yes. I love you.” Cecil bites his lip, hovering delicately over the next set of words. “And … I'm sorry, too. I'm sorry for making you feel guilty about being interested in that other desert. I'm sorry for being jealous. I just want you home. I’m sorry if that’s selfish of me, but... It's been a really long time now and I just… I want to kiss you again. I want to hold you again.”
“I love you, too, Cecil. And it's okay to be jealous. It's okay to be mad. It's okay to be… anything you ever are. I love you no matter what.”
Cecil smiles, wiping up some of his spilling tears with the sleeve of his nightshirt.
“Now, Cecil?” Carlos is saying. His voice is like soft silk, a delicate, private whisper into Cecil’s ear, smooth; seductive; perfect.
“Yes, Carlos?”
“Tell me about your dream. I want to hear what fantastical truths your subconscious makes up about me when I’m not around.”
In another time, in another place, Carlos the scientist is lying down in the cool sand, unwashed sandy hair falling into his face as he stares up at a velvety, purple sky. His one hand rests on his knee, the other clutches dearly to a cell phone at his ear. The desert, vast and all-knowing, spans out wide and far in all directions around him. He pays no mind to this. His full focus and attention is on the smooth baritone voice drawling into his ear. He pictures the images from Cecil’s fantasy with awe, and a vague twinge of melancholy. He smiles, delighted, showing off teeth that are like a military cemetery.
Back home, in the other time and place, Cecil Palmer is yawning. His cheeks are decorated with a deep blush as he rambles embarrassing and personal stories into the distant ear of one that he loves. They talk until the latest hours of the night; until sunlight starts to stream in through the curtains of Cecil's window, too happy and too afraid to let the other hang up.
