ok, so, my family (dad, more specifically grandpas side, I dont like dicing it up like that but it’s necessary for this story) is louisiana kreyol. We have been in america since at least the early 1700s and I know our ethnic background is french, italian, native, and west african. We are culturally kreyol-ish despite living in the pnw because my grandpa brought it with him when he moved up here. He does not speak the language.

My grandpa was interested in his culture, but the rest of my dads side…isn’t, and largely identifies as white. (despite not really looking white?. their skin is very much olive/brown and my dad looks more asian if anything.)

due to the way the world works, I obviously have very little information on the native side. Even the tribe itself only has about half a page of information on google. Same thing with the west african.

I look ethnically ambiguous, and identify heavily as native (and mediterranean, i dont identify as african as much but i do want to connect to that side a bit more) but reconnecting is so hard when theres no information.

my grandpa is dead, he died in 2018 which was before i even thought much about my heritage. my grandma does have native heritage but shes not connected and she doesnt know a whole lot about my grandpas side, i tried asking her the other day but she said that our family cant be kreyol because they “dont know how to speak the language” which just,, hurt.

I just don’t know what to do, I feel like im lying if i identify as poc, but i also feel like im lying if i identify as white.

I just feel very lost, i dunno :(

hello there. my condolences for the loss of your grandpa. its really hard to lose the family member you feel is most connected to your culture. the important thing to remember is that connection is also in you because you are connected to him, regardless of how you look or what you know. you come from your grandpa. i am not kreyol (if anyone who follows is, please feel free to comment on this ask), but some general advice on feeling connected is:

do your research - honestly just use everything at your disposal to research the history and culture you’re a part of whether that’s family records, books, internet, public records -  research! research! research!

interact with other ppl of your culture - be careful with this if you’re a minor, but interacting with other ppl from your culture in real life/online can be helpful but do so safely

follow activists/influencers from your culture - this will also involve research, but the best way to learn about the issues facing your people is from the people fighting them/advocating for them

learn language and recipes - again, this will take research, but there are loads of language learning apps for learning ancestor tounges. same with recipes for indigenous foods

engage with media from your culture - watch films, tv shows, and read books about and created by your people. its the easiest way to learn about your culture. even just finding clips on youtube

follow blogs/social media about ur culture - another great way to both learn and connect with ppl is following positivity/history pages about ur culture. it’s also a great way to decolonise ur feed

be patient with yourself - reconnecting is a process that is different for everyone. it’s a never-ending process and you have to respect there will be times you’re frustrated and even wrong about certain things - that’s okay. take a deep breath and keep going

labels are not as important as your actions - a label is a word you give yourself. it does not necessarily give you culture, allyship, community, history or knowledge. that has to come from you and your actions which is why its important to keep what you do in focus over what you call yourself. at the end of the day, that’s what matters. that’s how people will see you as who you are.

listen!! - there are gonna be times you get things wrong, there are going to be times where you’ll be called out. these are moments of learning. they’re not easy, but they’re necessary. listen and learn.

remember, blood quantum is colonial - unlearning to think of your heritage as something quantifiable is a big step and one of the most important steps you’ll take. no matter how much milk you add to coffee its still coffee

*Deep breathe* Do i ever!!!!!!

I actually have an unneccessarily long post in my drafts i am typing out talking about Kuron, (Kuron babygirl please get help😭😭), but the entire thing can boiled down to this- Kuron is someone who desperately wants even needs a semblence of control in his life. Like the entire possession by Haggar and than merging with Shiro? Finding out you are a clone created to replace this guy to destroy the team inside out and be a weapon? Everything you used to think about yourself was a straight up lie? That a recipe of a whole bunch of issues baby!

This man has lost any and every form of agency since the moment he was created. He isnt even sure that he can trust himself or his memories anymore because how can you when you are literally created to be someone else? He doubts every thought he has, every first instinct, every want, because he is never sure if that is him being himself or him being Shiro/controlled by Haggar.

What he is sure about is how angry, hurt, and betrayed he feels by his friends. He is especially hates Keith (who effectively killed him and is the one putting the most emphasis on him being Shiro), Allura (who put Shiro in his body), and Shiro (literally face of like so much of his trauma, the entire "evil clone who replaced me" shit he talks about while in HIS body, and just being merged and locked in his mind was just not a great experience, 0/10 will not recommend) (he also hates Haggar so much, he will throw hands). And this anger is pretty much a crutch to him, because it is the one thing that kept him from fully merging, and is pretty much an assertion of his identity.

He has this weird complicated feeling about Lance, cause well Lance is the one who saved him and he is very grateful for that, but also he has been nursing that hurt for a really long time and just has a really hard time letting it go and he just doesnt trust Lance, he wants to but he really cant. The problems between these two can be solved with few honest conversations because both parties are more willing to listen to each other, but problem is Lance is kinda in a coma and Losing it which is a major L.

He is also trying to find what to do and who he is. He did not expect to survive or get out or get his own body but now that he is out he just doesnt know what to do with this second chance. He's going through motions, trying out new things, anything and everything that just gives him a purpose or something, anything

He wants nothing to do with Shiro, so anything resembling Shiro has to go. He is getting tattoos, piercings, changing his whole aesthetic. Space? Cosmos? The fuck is that? He is Not Interested, no matter how cool as fuck it is, no sir, absolutely Not/sarc. He is doing things Shiro would hate which consequently he also lowkey hates but says he likes it through gritted teeth. These things range from reading classic Lit to getting into bar fights at 3am and it is just "Really! It Is So Fun!!! Shiro is a Massive Wuss and a Little Bitch for Missing Out while i am cool as fuck 😎😎😎😎😎😰- i mean 😎😎😎😎😎😎. Love having individuality and making my own choices under my own violation that have nothing to do with Takashi Shirogane, a guy whom i absolutely Do Not Care about and has Nothing to Do with This or Me" (dont tell him that by doing things against what Shiro would have done he is still letting him influence his decisions, he has to figure that out himself)

So to summerize- Kuron my guy is having a midlife crisis, an identity crisis, a what to do with your life crisis, a teenage rebellion phase all at the same time, which is a real Bruh moment of him.

i think/know its genuinely hard to transition from YA into adult books because of the scarcity of quality recommendations for genre fiction compared to YA but i promise its so worth it so here’s how i got into adult books i actually like after not reading since middle school

listicles are super helpful!

you can always look up things like “best science fiction 2021” or even “books about witches” and look for the ones that have the most interesting synopsis

i find that inserting a specific year helps you not get the same 5 super famous books in any given genre/theme, giving you way more variety to pick from. also, i recommend prioritizing more recent years (say, the past 5ish) so you can be more or less up to date with the recs and market trends

also if you havent read anything since school, dont focus on filtering out the YA recommendations right away at this stage, just find recent-ish stuff you like and have fun! this will help you figure out what you like so you can finetune your recommendations later on

i think the idea that you must stop reading YA all together and only read adult fiction is a big part of why people don’t bother to even seek it out but i promise you dont have to leave it behind completely!!! its all about diversifying your palette!!!

storygraph is your friend!!!

storygraph is a book logging site/app that helps you find books based on quite literally their vibes!! things such as dark, mysterious, adventurous, etc. AND it provides trigger warnings

unlike goodreads, it isnt owned by amazon (dw, it lets you import your entire goodreads library into it so the switch is p seamless)

also you get a bunch of neat little graphs about all the books you mark as read

follow book influencers whose tastes match your own that read adult books often

my general rule of thumb is i need to agree with at least 60% of their opinions on the books ive read to consider us “matched”

(this is where having read at least a couple current-ish books helps give you some perspective on things you like that might show up on the favorites lists of people that have kept up to date with their reading the past few years)

ignore reviews from strangers/people who dont match your tastes

its a recipe for disappointment, i promise!!! especially those big passionate negative reviews at the very top of goodreads? 8 times outta 10 you’re gonna end up enjoying the book for half the things they’re yelling about!

the library is your friend and so are used book stores

for me at least, i had a really hard time with the notion of spending too much on a book i’d end up disliking, so getting books for cheap or even free really helped take the edge off exploring new books

another perk of these avenues is that they often have a lot of what i call “diamond flops” which are great books that either werent or arent currently popular so theyre extra cheap/never on hold (this is how i stumbled upon Tyll and fell in love with it)

if you’re not from a libby having country like me you can do what i did and ask a friend who is for their library card number! in my experience, the app doesnt track across devices so you wont have to worry about judging each others reads

AUDIOBOOKS 100% COUNT AS READING

if you find that you have a hard time focusing, i recommend picking up both the book itself (be it digital or otherwise) and reading it along with the audio. if you find yourself getting bored/antsy easily with just audio you can also try playing it while you play a little mindless phone game (my go to is twodots)

since jay and gillion are so emotionally fucked up and traumatised, they have a reeeeally hard time figuring out their feelings and talking about them. talk through it is not something they understand. they are used to action and violence, not emotional support.

chip, on the other hand, had a better childhood (at least for as long as it lasted w the black rose pirates), he had people to talk to him when he was upset and who were there for him when he needed support. obviously he's still pretty fucked up bc of his own traumas, but i believe he's the one who's most likely to actually process his own feelings in a healthier way than the other two.

so, its slow and it doesnt always end well, but he tries his best to be patient and to show the others that they can be vulnerable around him. that he will listen to them, that they dont have to suppress it all, that they dont have to suck it up and deal with everything by themselves anymore. its not easy, but they're slowly opening up and healing.

not sure if silly or angsty, and i said this b4 i think, but i believe timothy rand knows how to bake. his only reason for learning that is because he wants to make edibles (or thats what he tells himself). so he'd often hang out in the kitchen with his mom to watch or maybe even help her cook when his dad wasnt around. but deep down thats a way for him to bond with his mom, because he doesnt know how else to approach her.

so, the silly part is that although rolan is the canon malewife and does all the cooking, he lets rand help him sometimes. rand, ofc, tries to sprinkle some weed in their food when rolan isnt looking, and even tries to create his own recipes with kians help (well, help is a strong word), which may or not go terribly wrong and end up w rolan scolding them and making them clean the entire kitchen.

idk about unpopular, but i believe there's a chance niklaus isnt a villain. i know i was brainstorming with bee earlier (which btw she has some pretty fucking cool ideas, everyone should check it out), but hear me out.

ik niklaus has everything to be the bad guy: he knows everything, he's too powerful, keeps making shady deals, and his name is followed by dread. hell, he fits perfectly in the stereotype of 'villain wants powerful thing that he cant get it by himself, so he manipulates everyone to get it for him'.

BUT we know too little. theres some information there that we dont know yet, that we're missing. he could very much make a deal with the other bad and powerful guys (aka the navy or the elders or god knows who else is out there) but he's sticking to the people who are against those guys. idk, something about the deals he makes sound kinda desperate for me. obvsly he's too composed to show that when he talks, but i sense there's something that makes him worried, anxious, so he's always ready to intervene if the situation goes out of hand. and the whole thing with arlin? sus af imo.

maybe he is the bad guy. or maybe he has the knowledge of some greater thing thats still beyond our (and the crew) comprehension. so he can sense what things are leading up to and is pulling some strings to shift their destiny to do or avoid something specific. but we'll have to wait and see

AND her dad had a heart attack during the earthquake, and her mom had to run out and turn the gas line off on her own with the bricks falling on her, and the whole neighbourhood was concerned about them because they hadnt left their house yet and they all came together to help sohla and her family

I've got modern day college au Zukka Headcannons that NONE of you asked for but here you go!

Everybody seems to agree that Sokka would be an Engineer major but y'all, Sokka isnt just an engineer guy. Hes a true Jack of All Trades who would most definitely be a double major kid. I think he'd have Engineering as one major and maybe a minor in special effects. I mean how many times did he help create special effects to trick other people into thinking somebody was bending fire or earth or whatever? At least 2. And thats enough for me 😂 Genuinely, Sokka would be that Engineering/Special Effects kid with a 2nd minor in like software design. I dunno. Hes too smart for his own good.

Zuko however; everybody says he would be an english major. And I mean i see it i guess? But nah. This boy would definitely have a major in Business/Law something or other, and i feel like he would have a minor or second major in communications.

Zuko would most definitely teach martial arts classes to kids on weekends. This is not up for debate.

Sokka is the kind of guy who everybody would know. Whether his campus is big or small, everybody has had an interaction with Sokka. Its almost like he can sense when somebody close by is too stressed or emotional bc he gravitates towards them and cheers them up.

Sokka has been known to randomly show up at your dorm door in a onesie and a basket of cookies if he notices youve been spending too much time in the library.

However nobody has ever seen him set foot in the library on a weekday so no one is really sure HOW he knows.

I dont make the rules but Zuko was most definitely a theater kid in high school. Sokka was theater tech even though hes actually a really good actor. He just enjoyed teching more.

Zuko had a private education at a high end school until his last two years of high school when he went to live with his uncle and went to a public school. He loved to read a lot and actually studied many many plays in his private school and found out he enjoyed acting in his junior and senior year.

This of course also means that Zuko can sing :)))

Sokka can too and hes good at it but nobody has ever really heard him sing bc its one of those things hes private about.

Sokka was a public school kid 100% and he was The Mother Hen™ that kids would flock to in the halls and at lunch. He was the one everyone felt comfortable talking to about anything. This also means he knew almost every closeted and out gay kid in school.

Back on the subject of private school Zuko, he was always one of those Rich, Untouchable kids with bad boy vibes. When he joined public school, everyone there realized he was just a really awkward kid who had a 6 year edgelord faze.

Did i mention the high school Zuko goes to is the same one the gaang attended?

When they all end up at the same university, Sokka and Zuko actually agree to room together bc they become really good friends in high school.

Zuko didnt come out to Sokka until they were sophomores in college to which Sokka replied, "Dont be mad but i already knew"

Sokka has been proudly out for years at that point but he still comes out again to Zuko.

Junior year, they get an apartment. They both actually take turns cooking because, as it turns out, they're both really good cooks.

Neither of them can drive very well tho 👀

In terms of nationality, i kinda see Zuko as Asian and Sokka as more of native/islander or a little bit of hispanic influence even? Definitely something with a lot of tribal heritage. Maybe Mayan and Hawaiian or smth? I dunno, I havent done enough research on that part yet.

The SIGNIFICANCE though is cooking. They both kinda share their authentic cooking and recipes and teach each other. So between them they come up with these blended culture foods

Sokka being the strategist he is gets along very well with Uncle Iroh whenever he and Zuko go to visit their families. They both practically live at Iroh and Sokka's family's home. Iroh and Sokka spend a LOT of time playing Pai Sho and chess and other board games whereas Zuko has lots of fun discussing literature and whatnot with Sokkas fam

About that: Zuko is the cuddliest little shit. He and Sokka have been cuddling and constantly physically affectionate for almost as long as theyve known each other.

Junior year of college is actually when they go on their first date. Sokka is of course naturally flirty so when Zuko finally notices (or is told) that Sokka doesnt flirt with anyone the way he does with Zuko, the wonderful conversation goes as:

"Wait are you flirting with me? For real?"

"Have been for 4 and a half years but thanks for noticing"

Thats when Zuko finally tells him the whole story of why he's living with his uncle.

My reasons!

To me, the big reason I matched you up with him are because I believe he'd match with your love language as Venti would be naturally inclined to express his affections through physical touch (ahem, nothing naughty in this context) and/or words. He would probably tease you for being an airhead, and wouldn't get overly irritated by it because of his light-hearted, carefree nature. And honestly, with Venti, I'd feel like you'd be best friends before anything else so by the time anything romantic is involved, the initial shyness wouldn't be as prominent. And as for over-apologising, Venti would just laugh it off, that's just who you are! He doesn't mind. Most of the time, he'd go with whatever it is you want to do for the day (I can totally see him doing everything you mentioned above), he'll just go with the flow most of the time. As for other matches, I also considered Childe as he is prone to express via phyical touch/words of affirmation as well, but I feel like he may be a bit too much of a wild card sometimes, and I also had Noelle swimming at the back of my mind because she'll love doing homely activities with you, but I thought someone a bit more outgoing would be better, so bard boy it is! :)

The First Date:

"Wha- I thought when you said 'come over and have some cake!' that you would already have one made," Venti complained after you ushered him inside.

You had called him under the pretense of having a decadent treat ready to eat, when in reality you just wanted him over to help you make said treat because baking was way more fun when done together.

"Oh stop whining," you rolled your eyes.

"Which one? Wining or whining? Because I'm never giving up the former," he gave you a cheeky grin over his shoulder as you tied his apron up a bit tight to shut him up.

You ignored his so called witty retort to retrieve ingredients from the cupboard. "You wanted to take me on a date this week right? Well this is it, your chance on a good impression!"

"Pfff, good impressions? Please, we're way past those. I've seen you walk into a pole and apologise to it, and you've seen me dancing on the street half naked because I was drunk at 3am."

"Touche," you sighed,"why did I ever even agree to give you a chance, I'm starting to wonder."

Venti shrugged 'beats me' before bending to look into the fridge. "What kind of cake are we making?"

"Chocolate? I dunno, what do you want?"

He rummaged around a little before pulling out a slender bottle of dandelion wine, one you did not remember having.

"So this is where it went!" he exclaimed, examining the label,"I must've put it in here last time...hey, is it possible to put this in the cake?"

"I knew you were going to say that," you pinched the bridge of your nose before mumbling,"I guess we could."

You had tasted a chocolate wine cake before, and even though you made a point to look disapproving whenever he tried to weasel the drink in every meal, you had to admit that this just might make for a very tasty flavour.

"Alright~!" Venti cheered, suddenly a lot more enthusiastic. "Where do we start?"

You opened the recipe book to flip through to the right page, trying not to be distracted by him peering over your shoulder, almost resting his chin on you

The lack of space made you fluster, and of course, Venti took that as an opportunity to poke fun

"Y-you just stay over there," you nudged him away in embarrassment. "Just crack the eggs into that bowl- and no egg puns!"

"Aww but how did you-"

"I could see it in your eyes," you huffed, pretending to be annoyed.

Did you really think Venti would stop there though? Course not! Be prepared for him booping you on the nose with cream, smearing your cheek with flour and drinking the rest of the wine that was not used.

He certainly made the process a lot more fun, and you guessed it was one of the things you liked about him.

"So...what do you say? Am I in the clear for a second date?" Venti slid down the side of the counter to sit in front of the oven, keeping a close eye on the tray inside.

"Hmm," you sat cross legged next to him, opting to humour him with your answer. "If the cake comes out delicious, then you've got yourself a deal."

well armin, since he was chosen to live over erwin, he'd look up to erwin in a modern au

and when erwin dies in that au bc ofc he has to die, armin is still a teenager.

i like to think that they all lived in the same town as kids, and erwin always looked out for armin since he had no one else other than his friends. 

he basically lets armin live with him when he's not with eren, who also has no family and sort of couch surfs between jean and sasha - sasha's dad loves eren for whatever reason so he stays there a lot, and welcomes armin and mikasa with him - and so erwin and armin r close

and levi is always around, so he sees armin a lot, even if he takes care of eren more - he lets eren stay at is house on nights when he feels like hes overstayed his welcome at sasha’s.

but levi still cares abt armin bc he sees how erwin cares abt armin and levi is in love with the blond facebook dad

but erwin died when armin is like 15, so he still needs someone to look out for him

and erwin asks levi to do that, bc he trusts him and knows levi would take care of him just like he had  

anyways, he asks levi to take care of him and levi does

but armin is a 15 yr old who just lost yet another person who cares abt him 

and even tho hes grateful that levi cares for him, he misses erwin so much. 

he acts out bc of it bc hes a kid going through trauma and its what kids do. he starts acting even worse than eren and eren is a fucking demon spawn

armin and eren share a room, even tho levi had two empty rooms so they could have their own, and eren has stuff in the other room but armin doesn’t like the dark so eren stays there with him.

and levi isn’t really good at taking care of kids in the traditional way. 

he wakes them up every weekday for school by telling them he'll kick their ass if he has to take them himself - but he'll still drive them when it rains or its cold  

he doesnt really know how to cook bc erwin always did that, but his notes app is full of recipes erwin always recommended that were easy to follow bc he was always worried that levi always ate too much cold leftovers from days before and noodles

armin knows hot to cook pretty well bc erwin taught him but he enjoys laughing at levi failing at cooking simple shit - he burned water somehow

but levi still tries so its fine

he tries letting armin know hes welcome, and that he can ask for whatever he needs

he'll leave him lunch money on the counter

and when he notices armins jackets getting a little too short around the wrist he drops a new one by his lap when he sits on the couch

he pulls the blanket all the way to his chin if he falls asleep on the couch.

he'll mention he's going to get a haircut when he notices armin's hair getting longer, and says he can go with him if he wants

but armin still acts so off. 

before erwin was gone, armin always acted happy, even though he never had much, and levi feels guilty knowing he cant do what erwin did for him, but he's doing this for erwin, and knows erwin wouldnt have put armin in his care in the first place if he didn’t trust him

i see taking care of armin as the task that keeps levi going, just like how killing zeke is what keeps him alive in the anime.

both promises he makes to erwin and wont give up on until he’s fulfilled it

but one day armin just disappears. he doesnt come back after school with eren like usual. so he and levi try calling him and get nothing. eren offers to go look for him and levi tells him to stay safe n waits back home to see if armin will show up there

and he does like 5 mins after eren leaves. 

and levi feels his chest just deflate with relief. it was cold outside, and armin was out there alone. 

his cheeks and nose r red from being outside for so long

when levi asks where he's been, it comes out harsher than he meant, but its just bc he was worried, and armin rolls his eyes and asks why it matters

levi tells him its bc he's a kid and doesnt get to just disappear without a trace whenever he wants. levi never minded armin doing whatever he wanted - within regulation - but most times he knew eren was with him, or mikasa, someone who would call him if something happened

and armin says “you're not my father.” and starts taking off his jacket and stuff

“yeah, but i am the person who's taking care of your ass.”

and that seems to make armin a little more ticked off than he already was, bc he turns to levi and says, “well i never asked you to do that.”

to which levi replies without thinking, “no but erwin did”

levi and armin never talk abt erwin, ever.

its like an unspoken rule between them. its not that they arent as comfortable with each other - they arent anyways but - they just dont do that, talk abt how they feel abt erwin, and him being gone

armin looks like hes gonna cry before he just says “well i wish it was erwin that was still here instead of you”

and levi is suprised that armin would ever, it hurts a little, and he just nods in agreement and says “me too.”

armin doesnt say anything back to it, he just turns and makes his way to his room, slamming the door behind him

and levi is exhausted. in his head he wonders how erwin had done it - balanced college and a job and a fucking teenager 

but then he remembers that erwin was erwin, and hed always been good at that type of thing

thats the first night he lets himself admit that he misses him

he feels like he’s failing at the one thing erwin asked of him

when eren shows back up, levi apologizes for not letting him know that armin had came back

but eren just tells him that armin had texted him when he’d arrived - i have a hc that eren and armin were each others first crushes but uhebdbsi

he tells levi that armin had said hed went to the beach

erwin used to take armin to the beach all the time before he died

he’d collect shells with him, and the ones that armin really liked, he’d give them names

he still has one called smith from the last time erwin had taken him to see the ocean

a few weeks go by after that

they never really talked before, but now it seems almost even worse

the silence that they normally exist in feels empty

but everything felt empty without erwin

eren lets levi know where theyre going to be whenever theyre not home, when theyll be home, etc

levi never asked for him to do that, but he does it anyways

levi’s thankful for the near suicidal maniac at that point

even though he always was

he saw a lot of himself in eren, and he sees a lot of himself in armin too

levi and armin never really apologize to each other, but one night when levi’s attempting to cook, armin walks in the kitchen and watches him place things on a pan

“you’re putting them too close together.”

armin steps beside him and tilts his head to the side, as if hes gesturing for levi to move

and he does, letting the younger and taller boy move the prerolled croissants further away from each other on the baking tray

“they never wouldve cooked all the way through like that,” armin tells him

with a scoff, levi mumbles that he sounds like erwin

armin pauses for a second, before sliding the pan in the oven. levi tells him how long the packaging said they went on so that he can set the oven timer

armin sets it for two minutes longer, and levi’s heart aches

erwin did that, too

“i miss him”

and he thinks he’s ruined armin’s head again, when he’s supposed to be someone this kid can look up to

but he doesnt leave

armin just leans against the oven and nods “me, too”

after that, things arent bad anymore

sure, it takes awhile for them to completely warm up to each other, but they manage

enough that armin sits in on levi’s cooking sessions just to point out what hes doing wrong - something that helps, bc pretty soon levi is learning

he cooks him, armin, and eren an entire meal without burning anything

eren laughs when armin tells him that the man had forgotten to grab an oven mit and had stuck his entire hand in the oven to grab a pan

levi raises his eyebrow when he notices the way armin blushes at eren’s laugh, of all things

and they talk abt erwin more

they have more to say about him that eren, and its just something the two of them share, so they tend to save it for little moments, tiny snippets of things that remind them of the blond

after about a year, things are good

armin asks to have his 17th birthday at the beach, and who would levi be to say no

levi doesnt particularly like the beach, he detests sand, but its for armin, so he��ll do it

its for his kid

him and erwins kid

at the party, he finds a smile coming to his face when he sees armin actually laughing and having fun

kid had been through too much hell at 17, so he deserved to be happy, even if it was only for a few moments

on their way home that evening, eren and armin passed out from a day of swimming and running on the beach - levi made the both of them bring extra towels to save his car seats from salt water and sand

eren’s head is on armin’s shoulder, and the blond’s is resting atop eren’s head

when they get home, the two of them trudge towards their room, but armin turns and holds his closed fist out to levi

with a raised eyebrow, levi holds his hand out and lets armin drop something into his hand, before the boy pivots and continues his shuffle to his and eren’s shared room

i think both, but in slightly different ways ! triss always wants comfort from ava, whether shes happy or sad or whatever lol, but i do rly love the idea of ava relying on triss a little more for emotional support once they have been in a relationship for a while, and once and ava feels safe w that kind of thing............like just letting her be vulnerable with someone whom she trusts, just for a little while....

again i would say both in different ways ! it rly depends on what the q means by passionate. like triss is very handsy and quite physical w her affection, and ava is more into the subtler stuff. but in saying that, when ava does get physical its WAY more intense and ‘passionate’ in that sense!

oh boy those were ages ago i’ll dig up a few so i can remember the vibe of the things i wrote

for those of you just joining us, my past headcanon posts

while other provinces are torn between living in one city or another or out in the middle of nowhere, oliver doesn’t have that issue. he lives in toronto and holidays in one of an entire network of cottages across the province and does not feel conflicted about that in the least. and he doesnt live “in toronto” in the gta, he lives IN toronto in some old annex style house and good luck getting rid of him.

he LOVES living alone, he relishes his independence, he does NOT miss being trapped living with jean NOT ONE BIT!! he does NOT create fake arguments over what should go over the mantle or what to make for dinner with the chattery squirrel outside because he’s LONELY.

Self indulgent headcanon but since he understands how difficult it is to live in the city and how valuable a good education is, he will occasionally rent out the basement to a quiet and tidy university student or two. He has a soft spot for kids who are trying to find their feet and figure out who they are away from their parents (as long as they do their chores).

Despite his downtown living and his urban elite image, he has experience working in factories and on farms and that tends to catch people off guard. He knows his way around milking a cow and he loves to tinker with machinery, getting his hands dirty doesn’t bother him even though he does love to mope and solicit pity. 

he just cannot physically help being overdramatic and bitchy, it’s just the tough outer layer he developed trying to survive american assimilation (and jean’s cutting words lol). he thinks his sarcasm is among his most endearing quality, since the people who Get It always laugh.

It’s not that he doesn’t drink or that he’s against drinking, per se, at least, not anymore. He just likes being the designated driver because he likes the moral high ground, not because he’s secretly a mother hen who wants everyone to get home safe. 

he grew up in the southern... peninsula (you know that... sorry i get so confused about whats north and west in ontario.)Anyway it’s not that he doesn’t Also represent Northern Ontario, it’s just sometimes hard to pry him out of his original comfort zone and he sometimes gets stuck in his own head in the south. 

it’s not like mani would know what to do with all that space up there anyway, it’s just best that he takes care of it, it’s always best that he be left to manage things, he’s just more organized, he’s the brains, he’s the one with the vision, no he does not accept constructive criticism, what kind of leader would he be if he was openly questioned... that’s not how he was raised at all. imagine, entertaining other people’s ideas. 

Ollie likes to think he’s the rational one but pretty much every move he made in his early days was out of fear and anxiety; he can sometimes be overly cautious and people who just go out and do things just baffle him. 

He’s really open with his feelings (particularly when it involves complaining, which he loves) but he’s horrible at delegating tasks or asking for help. He also gets easily frustrated when people have given up on helping him without him having to ask, but he still insists on trying to do everything himself.

is it weird i cannot fathom him in anything but an mlm relationship lol

He won’t forgive rude behaviour, even if he appears like a doormat to an American. He remembers when he’s been rude to and compensates by being overly polite. The only person who’s immune to this seems to be Jean, who always seems to be getting away with being rude...

that said he drops way more f-bombs than most of the others and americans always either think it’s either adorable (and make fun of his perceived accent) or are SO SHOCKED that their INNOCENT BABY FRIEND would have such LANGUAGE!

has such. a weird. distorted. romantic idea of what road trips are. i dont know if he knows how to travel in places where rest stops arent cleaned every couple hours or if he’s ever had to pee in the bush or stay in a place without electricity in the time that he’s owned a car. 

he’s always been a huge natural history nerd, he loves spending time in natural history exhibits and geeking out over weird birds and fish and minerals.

he also loves sailing and swimming and he’s got a weirdly extensive canoe collection squirreled away somewhere. 

had a LOT of pressure on him as a kid to be the Good and Perfect child, not like those nasty yankees. He’s not very good at acting out and being rebellious, but he will absolutely stand his ground on an issue that’s dear to him, particularly if his control over something is threatened. 

anywhere you can’t take a train to is fake adn should not have been counted

he’s still an avid tea drinker and has lots of opinions about tea time and has been making the same recipes for literally 200 years (jean puts up with this because he cannot be assed to make his own little fine cakes, ok, and if ollie has extra for him to take home its to his advantage. if oliver makes extra specifically because he knows jean likes them, that’s for him to know. and same with homemade fudge and butter tarts and candy and ice cream, neither of them outgrew their sweet tooth) 

also he’s somewhat motivated by jean’s blunt reactions to his baking because thats how he’s going to survive the blue ribbon baking and jam making events against those tough and bitter old ladies, jean is perfect practice (although some of his best and most nuanced insults don’t translate very well)

his french is not bad nor is he embarrassed of it, he’s annoying in both official languages.

he gets mad when you say he’s practically interchangeable with matt but he still seems to think the things he does are things that all canadians do or like or have, i mean, why wouldn’t they? but they still owe him for that.

he compensates for his relative lack of interest or seeming inability to ask the others how they’re doing (because thats rude! and prying! and he’s sure they’re just fine! he doesn’t meddle anymore because people get upset when he rearranges their pantries) with an almost weird obsession with his self image and what’s happening internationally

3 recipes that uses sugar syrup, side recipe ideas for @Katsukitchen Zine!

Hello everyone! Hopefully everyone is well and in joyous spirit! Its been a lovely week for me and right after Halloween I will be going back to college for my second half of this semester but not before letting you guys know that @katsukitchen zine is having their last week of sale and we are already more than halfway through the sales to unlock EXTRA content pdf and also a set of of poscards for those who bought the merch bundle set.

Now back to what I am here for, to give simple recipes that you can follow along with. The main ingridient things to use in this recipe is the cinnamon sugar syrup that are used in my other recipe which is the Rose flavoured shaved ice with tapioca pearls! Two of these also uses rose syrup so if you happen to have some of those left you can make these two drink and I will tell you how to layer them.

For the cold version. You would want to pour your syrup on the bottom of the glass and coat them with as much syrup as you love. Put in some ice, about halfway up

Next, pour in your cold milk to cover the ice. You can use any kinds of milk you like. Even soy milk, which you can add some vanilla essence to make it even more delicious before you add it into the glass.

Have your favourite kind of tea ready and infused with some rose water, or you can just use rose tea but just incase if you dont have either rose water or rose tea, you can just add the rose syrup to the tea and it will give you 3 layers without the gradient but it will just be as impressive!

The trick to layering milk te is to have the most dense liquid at the bottom and the most watery one at the top. The ice also helps to slow down the layers from mixing. To make sure that the ice doesnt melt, make sure that the tea is in room temperature before you pour it in.

Now for the finishing touch, you would need to water down some of the red rose syrup to just enough to colour the water bright pink. This step is totally skippable since it is just for the aesthethics but it makes such a lovely colour to not do it! Take a spoon and then just drip the water at the top of the tea using a spoon to control the flow.

Put that on top of a coaster and there you have it, your first recipe! Feel free to mess around with the ratios. Some like more milk than tea while others the other way around! Onto the hot version.

So we are basically using the same ingridients except this time we would want to mix the tea and rose syrup together later.

The first step is to pour down the cinnamon syrup like we did before and now before you pour down the milk, I would want you to warm the milk, not to boil, just warm the milk before we can froth it.

Frothing the milk would add a nice layer of foam on top of the milk. You dont need a special utensil for this, just two about similar sized cup that you can "pull" the milk from back and forth until you get the foam that you want. If you watched Indian pulled tea videos on youtube, you know exactly how it is.

You would need to raise the cup that you ARE pouring from high up from the cup that you are pouring into. Pouring while having cup high up will incorporate some air into the milk that will create that nice foam that you want. Pour it into the cup and then we can move on to pouring the tea.

Now compared to last time you would actually want the tea to be hot. After mixing in the rose syrup, you would need a spoon big enough to slow down the tea from mixing. Have the back of your spoon facimg up and have the edge pointing to the side of the cup. Slowly and gently pour the tea onto the backside so that it will drip down to the edge of the cup and went below the foam.

If your tea is not hot enough or the milk is not as cold compared to the tea, they will mix. You can cheat by making extra foam and adding the foam later after you added the tea. Especially since this is actually kind of dangerous as you might pour too much tea at once that it splashes onto you.

Alright so the last recipe which is a pumpkin pudding recipe. If you have made custard pudding before, you can just do that and add some pumpkin puree and have some pumpkin spice into the mixture but since this is autumn and pumpkins are in season, I would make my own puree from scratch. You want to use canned puree? Go ahead, you can. And I would usually infuse my milk with some pumpkin spice and then take them out after its infused.

I have my own golden ratio for my pumpkin pudding and I rather have it very soft and decadent rather than having it a little bit on the stiff side. I would like to add the full recipe for my pumkin pudding into the extra content zine. Now its kinda like a work in progress. I have all my numbers down, I just want to rewrite it in Baku's word so it would feel like you have your own Bakugou in your kitchen that likes to remind you to eat your vegetables.

Add all your ingridients which is the milk, the eggs and the puree rogether into a blender and blend away. This might create a foam on top and you would actually want to get rid of the foam before you pour it in cause the foam would actually change the texture of the pudding and you dont want that. For the smaller foam, you would want to get rid of it with the back of the spoon, and also a bowl of water. Coat the back of the spoon with foam, not scooping up any mixture and then rinse it off with the water.

In this recipe would actually want to steam the mixture in a ramekin, making sure you butter the sides if you want to take it out later. But eating it in the ramekin is also an option. If you're lazy you can just do that. Buttering the sides would make it easier to clean. Up to you. Cover it up with aluminium foil and make sure you close it shut and tight. Even use a rubber band to close it up real good. You dont want water to sneak in there cause that will change the texture.

Next, you can steam it for around 25 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the ramekin. And also have your steamer cover open slightly as you dont want the water to pool on top of the lip and the drip onto our foil cover. You can even have some clean cloth wrapped around your cover to absorb the moisture if you want to be extra careful.

Once done, bring to room temperature and cool it off for an hour before serving it up with cinnamon syrup and also whipped cream.

So there you have it! Three different recipes that uses cinnamon sugar syrup!

this is nowhere near specific and you damn well know it, anon. i appreciate u trying to find an excuse to throw coffee shop aus everywhere, tho. keep doing the lord's work even if i will inevitably twist the prompt

Magnus works at a small, local coffee shop as a barista. It's not exactly his #1 job choice, but it pays better than big chain coffee shops and he needs that to pay rent now that he officially left his abusive father's home for good. Also, he is kind of a coffee enthusiast and the owner, Ragnor, lets him go wild with making up new drinks and ingredients, as long as he still does his job.

All in all it's a good job and he considers the old fart and the other barista, maia, to be like family. Ragnor frequently gives them coffee and Maia constantly teases him about being a "coffee scientist" whenever she catches him thoughtfully drinking from a cup and scribbling notes on his notepad, like some ancient being

His recipes are good, though, and he knows exactly where to get the best coffee beans for the best price. So their drinks are good, affordable, and can please everyone from the traditional "black coffee no sugar" exec to the teenager who wants more of a milkshake than actual coffee

As a result, the shop thrives, gets more popular, and gets more clients. So Ragnor decides to hire a new barista to help. Because he's secretly a sweetheart, he ends up hiring this broke college kid who just moved into town to get away from his kinda toxic family and has nowhere to go - and also doesnt have a single ounce of experience as a barista

It's not surprising; both Magnus and Maia share similar stories, with some abusive exes to spice up the mix, not to mention racism, biphobia, and, in Magnus case, male behavior standarts keeping most opportunities closed for them. So they're cool with that. Even if it means Magnus will have to be the one to teach him, because 1- Ragnor is a dick and assigned him to be Alec's special "tutor" as retribution for Magnus calling him "an old, heart of butter bastard"; 2- he's the one who's best qualified to teach him since he knows a lot about coffee and coffee making anyway; 3- Maia has no patience

Quick detour just to say that i love the maia/magnus brotp opportunities this gives. While Magnus is more of a coffee scientist as she puts it, Maia has an almost instictive understanding of drink making. Where Magnus is soft, she's fierce, and they make one hell of a team and are good at balancing one another. They bond over their experiences with abuse; while Magnus' has made him afraid to put his foot down and say what he wants and prioritize himself, Maia's has made her particularly wary of people and even less willing to take anyone's bullshit, and both of these coping mechanisms have their own effects on their psyche, and they're able to talk openly to each other about it. Maia is kind of protective of Magnus and vice-versa, though the way they protect each other is very different. They have an easy companionship and bantering dynamic that's easygoing and cute, theyre both passionate about their interests (Maia loves marine biology and even if Magnus doesnt know much about it he loves listening to her talk about it) and just generally have that kind of relationship where just smiling at each other makes a tough day seem lighter. Also Magnus loves making Maia laugh. Maia blatantly refuses to laugh at any of his self-deprecating jokes, tho, which has considerably diminished the amount of times he makes them

Anyway Alec comes in for his first day and Magnus is like [REDACTED] because shit this man is cute. Maia notices immediately and from then on the teasing doesn't stop

He's quick to recover, tho, and suddenly he's all smooth again (Maia says he's perfected his customer service persona to horror movie levels), quick to introduce himself and Maia to Alec and explain that he'll be training Alec for the next few weeks or so. He gives him a tour of the shop, explains the basics, and immediately launches into his slightly extra More Serious Than Strictly Necessary course on the makings and workings of coffee, from bean selection to ideal temperature and the chemistry behind the cooking.

This absolute dork even had a small table with some coffee made from different kinds of beans so Alec could taste them and learn the difference and Engage with the profession or some shit

Maia just rolls her eyes, thankful that she had prior experience before getting this job and didnt have to go through this

The first thing he learns about Alec: Alec doesn't like coffee. This is not a setback. Many people dont like coffee, but that's because they're used to regular powdered coffee instead of making it from the bean. Because the beans in powdered coffee arent previously selected, they are roasted harder than they should, so any beans that might have gone bad wont spoil the taste or make you sick. As a result, the coffee is way too bitter and doesn't have a discernible taste. He explains all of this enthusiastically to a slightly overwhelmed Alec, and gets on to making him try the samples so he can feel the difference.

Here's the second thing he learns about Alec: Alec doesn't feel the difference

Despair. Horror. Offense.

Alec even kind of chuckles and goes "sorry" at the face he makes, and a not-pouting Magnus goes on with the planned explanation on bean selection

Third thing he learns about Alec: he's a quick study. Everything he lacks in sensibility to the amazing world of bean juice, he makes up for in his careful attentiveness to the instructions. He is also a strict recipe-follower and makes sure he always uses the exact amounts required. He's an absolute perfectionist. He listens to Magnus' explanations on how to know if the taste is right, to look for color and texture of the mix. Magnus tries his simple coffees and only needs a few corrections to send him on the right path

The first time Alec makes him something more complicated to try (per his request) Magnus wants to die

It's so good

Scratch that, it's perfect

This soulless motherfucker doesn't even like coffee and this is the single best version of whatever crazy frapuccino shit they're making magnus has ever tried

He kind of bursts from the kitchen (?) all like MAIA YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS just in time to interrupt her chatting with this redhead new customer with shiny eyes. Maia is leaning all the way across the counter. What is this

Maia agrees that it's very good but again he's not as passionate about coffee and Magnus just interrupted what would have been a really smooth number-giving move so she's not feeling all that generous

Alec just laughs at that. His eyes are shining with amusement and he's very, very pleased that Magnus likes his stuff

It's not a big secret, really; mixing drinks is kind of like patisserie in the sense that the measures need to be exact to achieve the best taste and texture. He follows the recipe to a fault, it turns out good. That's why he's better at the more complicated, instagram-y drinks than the simple coffee types

Alec "graduates" his training pretty soon after that and Ragnor is very pleased

He gets along well with both Magnus and Maia, even if he's more quiet and sometimes catches himself just laughing at the two of them interact; their friendship is something else. But he also gets to hear a "shut up" from Maia after not saying absolutely anything when the redhead walks in again the very next day

The redhead always comes in a little late in the morning, so its always slow. As a result, they get to pretend to be minding their own business as they hear the two of them chat and oof is the romantic tension between them something. Maia glares at them once the girl - Clary - leaves every time, but it doesn't stop them

Soon Maia is calling them "no-good gossiping grandmas" because of the way Magnus and Alec will go to the back and pretend to be making something while they keep a whispered running commentary on what the girls are talking about. This quickly turns into some sort of race to see who can make the other break and laugh out loud. Neither of them ever do (they are trying to be discreet and Maia would kill them) but oftentimes they need to cover their mouths with their hands and playfully slap each other for the teasing

Clary doesn't even realize she's the reason; she kind of just thinks they are constantly flirting on the back and briefly wonders how they havent been fired when all they do is whisper and make eyes at each other

Not that she has any room to talk when she's late to work everyday because she keeps cracking jokes with the cute curly haired barista with the most beautiful lopsided smile who always makes her laugh and tells her about her day while she drinks her coffee. She's lucky her work starts at 10 so she can go in a little later and doesnt have to be there during rush hours, but still

She doesnt even like coffee, she walked in one day cuz she was really tired and then just kept coming in the hopes that the barista would make a move on her (shes not gonna do it herself, at least not in her workplace. She doesn't want to make her uncomfortable and it's still unclear whether the girl is flirting or if shes just really nice)

At some point she and Maia even start sharing knowing looks to Alec and Magnus and laughing at them. They don't even notice, because their designated Making Fun Of Maia time turned into just cracking jokes at each other way too quickly. They don't even remember there are other people there

Maia does finally ask clary out eventually. She wasn't exactly nervous about doing it, it's more that she enjoyed their little routine. But enough is enough, and when their routine starts involving Clary giving her a quick kiss before placing her order, well, it just makes it better

Magnus and Alec coo every time

Eventually Maia snaps all like "why are you guys the one poking fun at me when im the one who made a move instead of being a coward"

Magnus is all like "Whatever could she possibly mean??"

It dawns on him when hes closing up the next day and Alec has already left. He has a crush on Alec. Oh god. Oh fuck

Maia helpfully says "idiot" and leaves

Some Magnus being very nervous and overthinking his relationship with Alec who's all like ???????? about this

Alec goes to his sister about his new crush who suddenly started acting weird and izzy is all like "stop trying to guess what he's thinking because you're terrible at this. Just tell them how you feel" and Alec is like okay

He asks Magnus out

Queer Eye: Umbrella Academy Edition

so the phrase “Luther on Queer Eye” came to me and I freaked out and uh yeah this happened... i basically wrote up how the Fab Five would help the Hargreeves siblings (its under the cut cuz it’s l o n g) (also Karamo signs them all up for therapy i didnt write that for each one because they all need it so bad) (oh also warning i dont know shit about anything these men are experts in so constructive criticism is appreciated thx xo)

Luther

Tan- surprisingly, Luther doesn’t seem to have any issue finding well fitted clothes, so Tan would probably just work on style- add some colour and prints, teach him how to make his torso look a bit smaller with the cut of his clothes and stuff like that

Antoni- big man need big food...find recipes that satisfy the monkey body??

Jonathan- Help that man deal with his monkey body!! shaving is an option buddy

Klaus would go through his closet and look directly into the camera, holding up the “new and improved” clothes while tan just loses his mind)

Antoni- teach him how to make easy, good food. Thoughts on Other Students in 3H

in no particular order

Hubert: evil snake boi, i kinda like you. i just wish there was more actual meat to ya then what there is. still, he does his role effectively and unlike edelgard plays into the whole evil empire thing with more gusto so i ironically find him more palatable because atleast the game isnt trying to pretend he isnt shady as fuck.

Dedue: oddly charming despite his straight laced attitude, he gets some interesting nuance in how well he highly respects (cough loves cough) dimitri and likes individual people from the blue lions, he doesnt have any particular fondness for faerghus as a whole which is definitely understandable given his history. hes essentially using the camus/murdoch aspect of undying loyalty and even borrows elements of the female camuses line of romantic interest in their liege however heavily implied it might be and applying that to a male playable character. Plus he just has some fun and interesting interactions with other characters in general.

Lorenz: I have difficulty saying whether i like him. on the one hand, he ended up being more multidimensional then i thought he was going to be with his internal conflict between keeping up appearances for the sake social status and societal order and his desire to pursue his own personal interests and ideals against the needs of his father and thus societal conventions. on the other hand, the game never really runs with this as much as it should and hes still treated as a bit of a joke character so... c+ to b? 

Ingrid: the token heterosexual of the blue lions whos still kinda gay anyways, her whole struggle with being a knight over a housewife seems a bit odd on the surface considering theres plenty of female knights and no one throws much of a fuss in universe, until you learn that it isnt so much that society expects her to do it as matter of course and more so that shes struggling with whether to pursue personal duty to her family or personal desires and ideals kinda like lorenz. in that respect she hits the mark a bit better then he does.

Raphael: kinda insubstantial but i liked him anyways, his sheer exuberance can be kinda refreshing in the games darker moments and hes got a few angles of his own such as his refusal to consider his parents deaths as part of a larger conspiracy so as to not hurt his friendship with ignatz nor ruin his own life and his sisters. plus hes just generally a nice guy. like a big huggable bear. just a shame that being a nice kinda dumb huggable bear is all thats really done with him.

Ignatz: his painting stuff and personal insecurities about wanting to do it over being a knight which his parents want him to do, more of that duty over desires and ideals thing again, is well enough and his probably misplaced guilt over raphaels misfortunes is definitely a highlight of him but he never really grabs as a character for some reason. probably because theres a lot of other characters in the game that hit those same marks and do it better then him.

Sylvain: has a lot of aspects that never really feel like they get proper follow up, his big thing is less womanizer and more so that he covers up his own mistrust and personal feeling by pretending to be a shameless flirt and philanderer. basically, maybe the emotional pain will go away if i flirt with girls and act the fool. but again there never really feels like theres any proper follow up for all this, others comment on it and then its more often then not dropped in story. hes fun enough but never really realized if that makes sense.

Caspar: shonen protagonist is kinda an apt word to describe him honestly, and that idealism of his clashes with the more grey on grey morality of the world hes within which is never a particularly bad direction to take the shonen bois in if done well like hunter x hunter. And he is done well, or at least satisfactorily to the point that hes another one i ended up liking more then i thought i would. his problem is more so that his interactions with most other characters in the main cast which feel duller then they should on most occasions.

Dorothea: probably gonna get a bit of shit for this, but i have no interest in her. her insecurities about her future and getting a good husband is well and interesting but manuela does that better honestly and outside of that dorotheas a bit... not shallow but hazy and insubstantial if you will. she obviously has appeal to people but like ignatz she failed to grab me in part because others did what she did and better within the game itself.

Ashe: soft boi chose to be soft instead of hard, one of the characters i found liking and one i expected to kinda like to begin with. in game he gets accused of being childish and naive a lot but i dont see it personally, hes not naive but more so tries to look for the best in people and in life like lonato did all those years ago for him. that said, the speed with which lonato dies damages his identity as a character a bit by happening before we really get a chance to feel for his relation to lonato, its not to big a bug bear as it doesnt hurt his character all that much but it does feel a bit frustrating.

Felix: teenage angst personified, his main gripes seem to be a distaste of warrior culture and its glorification of bloodshed and sacrifice but instead of approaching it with sadness or pacifism, he lashes out against what he feels is the unfairness of the world. hes not exactly wrong in his feelings and as a character it makes sense and works for his abrasive attitude, and its an interesting twist to the navarre type to have their isolation come not from stoicism nor sheer blood lust or a combo of the two but rather from a rage against the machine of society mindset.

Ferdinand: he got more interesting as i got farther along, and i personally feel he works the best as a character when going against edelgard since thats where more of his personal drama comes from. hes eager to succeed and prove himself worthy of his title over time and holds a chivalrous mindset very similar to others in the cast but his growth is less about learning how to hold onto those ideals in the face of reality for the sake of personal fulfillment but more so about learning to define himself by himself and not by societies needs. ultimately he comes to value chivalry not because its what people tell him to value but because he truly values it and i enjoy that. but its also why i feel he works better on other routes then edelgards since there hes still valuing himself not for himself but for the expectations society or edelgard in this case is placing him under, one tyrant for another in a sense. i admit i dont remember much about him on edelgards route though because i just like him more on the others.

Leonie: poorly timed support aside, she has an odd charm to her that a lot of modern fire emblem characters just dont have anymore. but knuckling past jeralt senpai shes an interesting blend of stingy and work effort that goes to inform itself and her relations to others. and like a lot of the golden deer she has a lackadaisical attitude of ‘i might not know what the fuck is happening, but i do know someone needs an ass whooping!’ and it works especially well in her case since her character is very attuned towards focusing more on her personal matters then the grand scheme of things because she has rent due in a few months. if she was in a more traditional fe set up she would definitely be a beowolf archtype that you need to pay to recruit. in fact im surprised thats not an option on other routes to begin with for her.

Hilda: honestly suprised me by not being a pure serra type. she has aspects of that on the surface with the selfish almost vain attitude towards life and others bur well serra is more about puffing herself up to hide insecurity and contribute towards a desperate desire for grand social status, Hilda downplays herself and her abilities due to living in her brothers shadow if unintentionally and seeing the stress it can bring. they’re both lazy and vain, on the surface anyways, always getting others to do their work for them but well serra seeks more social status to escape it hilda seeks less social status to escape it. plus it was kinda funny to see hilda act as claudes unofficial number 2 you could still recruit.

Lindhart: Sleepy boi needs a nap and thats kinda it really. exaggeration maybe but unlike a lot of characters in the game and the series as a whole he really doesnt have a reason to be there as a character. as a unit certainly but not a character, in terms of motivation anyways. He hates blood, fighting and violence, hed rather sleep or pursue personal interests then work or politics, hes insightful and intelligent but the important players in the plot have other advisers and hes not interested in stepping up in that regard anyways. his only real reason for being there is academic interest and even then a pin has to be put in that when war breaks out. hes not a bad character overall though, his sleepiness and insight make for an interesting double act along with his blunt mannerisms, i just have trouble pinning down motivations for him.

Mercedes: big team mom energy, which i suppose goes along with the whole being older then everyone thing. a bit dopey and airheaded at first glance shes one of the more receptive characters to how others are feeling and well she does try to nurture shes not above scolding if she feels it would help someone more then praise and reassurance. of course shes also very detached to events of the world mostly just there to help the people around her from the bottom rather then the top which is not an insult and more one of the things i find fascinating about her. it all makes for a very interesting character and one of my personal favorites of the cast.

Annette: overworker, issues with her dad, magic bubbly, and hits things with axes. a nice recipe of a character but it never feels as if the game can get it all to blend properly. more so to the point is that most of these elements work independently of each other and not to inform each other despite the games insistence. theres a lot of dramatic potential involving her father as well and though the game makes the best use of those aspects its not to the benefit of the rest of her character. it doesnt hurt her either though and she has some appealing dialogue with other characters.

Marianne: I had trouble getting to like her, perhaps more so then any other character among the other students. not because i hated her but because shes, well, very boring. alot of the characters in the game are into the self deprecation thing already and well her personality aspects of acting quite and submissive to fall into the background from a lack of self confidence it also feels like the game came up with two different explanations for it and couldnt settle on whether it was because of her adoptive fathers pressure or her families history and instead of weaving both together decided to use them interchangeably. Sometimes shes a wallflower because of her father and a lack of confidence to state her mind and self loathing over that lack of confidence, other times its because of her lineage and self loathing over her cursed history. never really at the same time.

Bernadetta: another odd favorite for me. recent support changes aside, the basic gist of her history remains the same in that her father was a tyrant in regards to her future which caused her to grow up with no confidence and a crippling fear of society, so shes already off to a good start as a character by basically doing mariannes schtik but better. well its hard for me to definitely say she ever grows past that as a character, thats fine in my opinion because her development is less stop being a recluse because society demands you dont and more so about making actual friends and learning that not all people are garbage fires just most of them. in most of her supports anyways. she just feels the most rewarding to interact with alright, and she was the one i always felt the most upset to mess up a speak thing with. Let us hug and stay inside watching cartoons together.

Petra: i went in wanting to like her and really liking her at first, but shes hit a middle of the road for me now. her speech gimmick wasn't particularly egregious and gets even less noticeable after the timeskip, but her actual character is a very straight forward ‘national pride demands independence’ package and doesnt really escape past that boundary all that much. its very understandable motivation, id even go so far as to say that shes the one with the best reasons to betray the empire of the black eagles characters, so like ferdinand i feel she works better outside of the black eagles in term of her own character identity and motivation/development as she finally stands up for her peoples right to exist on their own in an fe6 echidna kinda fashion. outside of that though shes... foreign to the other characters. thats kinda it.

Lysithia: as a unit she hits like a truck, as a character shes functional but hardly revolutionary for the series. i mean i did like her since i have a fondness for her archtype of weird magic prodigy poor social skills, but more so that she doesn't hit any particularly new notes in that regard. Shes a lot of lute, with some delthea childishness in her, some of sanakis sharper political wit and dark history, and a bit of miriels scientist on top. that said its all blended very nicely and she has some nice scenes for herself that got me to feel and care for her, some kinda adorable moments, and a history well woven into the games background and more so then most of the other deer and a lot of the other characters from across the houses in general. for a minor character anyways.
