"Holy fuck." You swallowed hard at the view in front of you. "My brother convinced me to get it done when he got some of his piercings, said it could be a bonding experience," Choso explained, putting his tongue decorated with the little silver ball back into his mouth. "Did it hurt?" You asked, your mind still reeling that he had hidden a tongue piercing from you for all these years.
"It wasn't horrible, I'm pretty good with pain. I don't really see the point in having it pierced though." He started to explain, "No one ever sees it, even I forget it's there sometimes." Choso finished. You just smiled and nodded, pretending to listen as he kept talking about his experience getting pierced.
You had already thought of 400 scenarios in which you would let choso put his tongue (and piercing) to work on your body, so the pain he went to to get the pretty jewelry wouldnt be in vain. One particular scenario stood out in your head of him tongue fucking you, feeling the metal against your clit and- "You okay?" Choso's voice rang in your ears.
"Huh?" You said, pulling yourself from your daydream. "I asked if you would ever get your tongue pierced and you just froze up." He explained, scrunching his eyebrows together. "Oh! Oh right! I uh, I'm pretty squeamish around needles so thinking about it makes me a little... nervous" You lied through your teeth, thanking the universe that he seemed to believe it.
For the rest of the day the two of you spent together, the only thing you could focus on was his piercing. Unbeknownst to you, he had caught you several times. Choso had purposely run his tongue over his lips to wet them, every so often, just to see your breath hitch when you got a glimpse of the silver.
As he was driving the two of you back to his house for a nightcap, some relaxing song playing in the background, you spoke up through the silence, "Thanks for today Choso! I know the night isn't over yet but the museum you took us to was so much fun, we have to go to the cafe inside next time!" you exclaimed. He turned his head away from the road to look at you, before returning his gaze on the dark street.
"I'm surprised you remembered there was a cafe." He said, a hint of teasing, and snarkiness hiding in his voice. "Huh?" You voiced, tilting your head at him in confusion. "You seemed out of it today." He elaborated, "Is there something going on?" He asked, keeping his voice and face fairly monotone. His question caught you off guard, had you really been acting that weird all day? So much so that he picked up on it? Oh god.
"No! No, I'm just a little tired today, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be weird." You forced out a laugh, once again coming up with a quick and hopefully believable lie. Unluckily for you, Choso saw right through it. "Are you sure? Because you were acting fine until I showed you my piercing." He said, hitting the nail right on the head.
You froze, not expecting him to be able to pinpoint the exact moment in the day you started behaving strangely, why was he so damn observant? "Oh.. really?" You said, no bullshit lies or excuses coming to your tongue, so you tried to laugh it off instead, saying something about a coincidence. "Did me sharing that make you uncomfortable?" He said, making you immediately reassure him that was absolutely not the case.
He turned the car onto your street, driving slowly down the dark path and towards your house. The two of you have been friends for the longest time, spending practically every second together any chance you got, so of course he knew the way to your house like the back of his hand.
"Oh my god no! No choso, really it's.. it's nothing.." You panicked slightly, not wanting him to feel bad for you being a perv and not being able to control yourself over a piercing. You sighed heavily, scrunching your face up as you seriously contemplated telling him what was really going on with you today.
No matter what you did you couldn't stop imagining your oblivious best friend's tongue between your legs, flicking your clit with his tongue and teasing the bud with the cold metal. You wanted to feel guilty you really did, but the vision was too delicious to feel any remorse.
"Does it turn you on?" He asked, pulling into your driveway and putting the car into part before he unbuckled himself and turned his body to face you. The expression on his face was unreadable, which made you nervous. Your face was heating up, and your mouth dropped open and closed like a fish out of water, trying to think of a response as your brain processed his unexpected words. You really didn't want your long-term secret crush on your best friend to be exposed like this.
"The piercing, does it turn you on?" He asked again, rephrasing his question. Oh god.. he was going to call you a perv and kick you out of the car, leaving you cold and alone in your own driveway if you said yes right? He would definitely think you were weird, who thinks about their best friend in that way?
You opted to shut your mouth, as you pulled your bottom lip between your teeth and nodded as softly as you could, unsure of your own actions. He looked past you, scanning the outside around the two of you to make sure there were no witnesses before he spoke his next words. "Wanna find out why I actually got this piercing?" He asked, making your face turn a dark shade of crimson as you whispered out a needy, "Please.."
--
"Fuck- Ohmygod right there Choso- Fuck!" Your hands dug into his soft strands of hair as he ate you out like a man starved. He had you on your back in the backseat of the car, legs splayed out for him as he laid between them, feasting on your cunt. He flattened his tongue out against your clit, making sure the ball of the piercing was kissing the little bud before he shook his head back and forth, stimulating your clit against it.
It had happened so fast, he had leaned forward and pressed your lips together, asking if this was okay before he unbuckled your seatbelt while you were distracted, and somehow the two of you had ended up in the backseat. You weren't sure why he didn't just drag you inside but you couldn't lie that the thrill of doing something like this in the car was exciting.
Choso scissored his fingers in and out of you, abusing your g-spot with the pads of his digits as they curled up against it. His tongue was working you over so well, he drew his name over and over on your clit, occasionally sucking it into his warm mouth and humming around it, sending delicious vibrations through your cunt.
Choso had never told you about any of his sexual conquests, so you werent really sure what to expect in terms of how well he would do when he said he was going to eat you out. Now you were begining to think he had a side job as a porn star or something because his technique was unreal.
"H-how are you so fucking g-good mph!" You cut yourself off with a whine when he suckled your clit particularly hard, making your body jolt against him. Truthfully, Choso had never eaten anyone out before, but he most definitely had watched porn and practiced on his hand for the day he got the courage to ask you out.
He wasn't expecting the opportunity to fall into his lap this easily, so when he saw your eyes light up at his piercing, he internally thanked the gods that you caught a glimpse of it in the sun, which led to him revealing the jewelry to you.
Choso always paid the utmost attention to you, without you even knowing it. He knew what you liked and disliked, he even so much as knew every detail about your tone and facial expressions to make sure you were constantly pleased and comfortable, he always wanted the best for you after all.
He watched how people would break your heart and toss you aside like you were nothing, it alwasy made him furious. They were absolute idiots to give you up, he hated seeing you sad over some unemployed nobody who never really cared about you from the start. Althogh he hated them, he couldnt help but feel a little grateful for them. If it werent for them taking you for granted, you might be in a relationship still, and the two of you wouldnt be in his backseat right now.
Choso moaned against your core when your hands tightened in his hair, rolling his eyes at the feeling of your nails digging into his scalp. "Does it feel good?" He said back, knowing damn well your answer. "Yes, yes Choso, fuck!" You moaned, dropping your chin to watch him work between your thighs.
He was already looking at you when your eyes locked with his. His eyebrows scrunched together upon feeling your gaze, keeping his dark eyes on yours as he ate you out with more vigor, drinking in your bodyâs every reaction to his tongue. The vibrations from his deep groans were going to push you over the edge. "Choso- Choso I'm close," You whined, fighting your eyes from rolling back in your head so you could keep your eyes on his and watch him do his thing.
He was so unbelievably handsome like this, the streetlights casting beautiful shadows on his face, and his expression was so needy it made your heart skip a beat. The way his eyebrows mimicked your expressions whenever he did something that felt particularly good, was so hot, he was so attentive.
The man between your legs was feeling drunk. This was something he only dreamed of and it was actually happening. He felt like his cock was going to burst from just tasting you alone, but he would gladly make home between your thighs forever. "Please," He begged from between your legs, scrunching his eyebrows together as he ate you out with more vigor.
He released his fingers from your tight hole and opted to replace them with his tongue, pressing his face as tightly against you as he could to make sure his tongue was fucking inside you as deep as possible, making sure to lick his tongue upwards against your walls so you could feel his piercing inside you. His fingers came to rub little circles on your clit with expert precision, making your legs start to shake.
You dug your nails against his scalp as you humped your hips against his face, hearing his muffled moans encourage you from between your thighs. "Ohmygod Choso! I-I'm cumming-" You wined before you felt the knot start to unravel. Choso swore he almost came in his pants at how sensually you cried out his name, mentally recording it for later.
He kept up his ministrations on your pussy, drinking up everything you gave him as you came hard on his face, squishing his soft cheeks between your thighs. He was mesmerized as he watched your body shake and curl in on itself, he stared at your mouth as it dropped open and spilled out profanities and whines of his name, broken on your tongue. When your back relaxed against the seat of the car once more he slowed his fingers on your clit, careful to not overstimulate you.
"Holy f-fuck Choso." You whispered, leaving your hands in his hair and running them through your own, wiping the sweat from your forehead. You took a quick look around in the post haze of your orgasm and noticed how foggy the windows were, so much for trying not to be obvious; anyone with half a brain would know what was going on if they walked past your car.
After he made sure he licked you clean, he pulled his face back and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, raising his body to sit comfortably on the seat as his other large hand came to caress your thigh soothingly. "Was that okay?" He asked, looking at you like a puppy.
"Okay?" You repeated, astonished he was asking as if he didn't just witness how hard you came, "I'm pretty sure that was the best orgasm I've ever had in my life." You laughed, making him smile at your words as your hand came down on top of his while he was petting your thigh. "Thank felt so good Choso, thank you." You said blushing as you closed your legs, noticing how exposed you were in comparison to him.
Of course, he picked up on this, he reached over to pick up your previously discarded panties from the floor of the car, wiping them off before he handed them, alone with your pants, to you. You said your thanks to him and he nodded shyly, a stark difference to how he was acting moments ago. It wasn't till you were almost finished getting dressed again when you noticed his massive boner. How did you not see it before? You felt so bad for letting him sit like that for god knows how long.
"Choso, you're hard." You said, stating the obvious. The man blushed and pulled his t-shirt over his hard-on to cover it. "Let me take care of it for you." You offered, leaning your body over his and placing your hands on his toned thighs, "I-Its okay-" His warm hands came down to grab your forearms, stopping you. "What? Really? It doesn't look okay," You giggled, looking up between your lashes at him.
Of course, he wanted you to get him off, that sounded perfect, but he needed to properly take care of you first. Your legs were still trembling and you were still out of breath, on top of that he could tell you were tired; that orgasm had taken a lot out of you, so he could wait. "Don't worry about me, I'll go down." He assured, rubbing his hands on your wrists soothingly and making you hum. "I still need to clean you up and make sure you're okay." He finished, making you blush. No man has ever said that to you before, and no man has ever eaten you out before tonight either but you wouldn't tell Choso that right now.
Truthfully, you were feeling tired, and the prospect of Choso cleaning you up didnt sound half bad right now, "Are you sure? It really wont take long." You offered one last time. He smiled and pushed your arms off of his thighs so he could leave the car, "Im sure, some other time." He said boldly, making you nod silently as he opened the car door and stepped out.
You started to do the same but his voice stopped you in your tracks, "Don't move." He ordered, so you didn't. It didn't take long after he shut his own door that he was opening yours, Choso now standing in front of you as he leaned inside the car and scooped you into his arms, making you giggle as he slammed the door behind him. "Choso! I can walk." You laughed, wrapping your arms around his shoulders as he held you in a princess carry.
"Don't wanna take any chances, your legs are still trembling pretty hard." He said, making you blush and want to hide away at his exposing words. "I think you're the sweetest man I'll ever know." You said to him, smiling at his blushing face as he quickly avoided his eyes with yours. He moved his hand to effortlessly type in your door code as he brought the both of you inside, away from the chilly air.
I better be, he wanted to say, but opted to only acknowledge your words with a hum as the front door clicked shut behind the both of you.

đđđđđđđđ !
pairing: iwaizumi x fem!reader note: itâs his birthday!!!!! my silly little gym rat <3 happy late birthday iwa!!! summary: your husband doesnât want too much for his 30th birthday, but you wonât stand for that! content: fluff, birthday, marriage, mentions of other characters like oikawa, kissing, gosh this is so gooey in the best way possible, drinking.
âBaby, seriously, you donât need to do all of this.â Your husband sighs at the same time that you poke your tongue out in concentration.
Currently, a piping bag of not too sweet icing is in your hands and youâre icing a one layered cake.
âHaji you only turn 30 once, this is big!â Hajime scratches at his neck, a little groan leaving his lips afterward.
âItâs just a reminder that Iâm getting older.â Yes, thatâs true, he is getting older. Heâs no longer in his twenties. He would argue that heâs not in his prime anymore but you think otherwise.
There have been highs and lows to his twenties but his thirties are going to bring something new to the table. What exactly? Youâre not sure, but it will present itself with time.
âHurry up and go change into the clothes I put out for your special day. Your friends and past kohais will be arriving in like 30 minutes.â
A little what leaves his lips, âYou invited those losers?â
âThose losers all love you very much, so of course I invited them.â He snorts, âNever thought Iâd spend my thirtieth birthday with my old volleyball team.â
âYeah, well, you told me that they were like a family to you soooo.â He canât argue with you there, sometimes his volleyball team felt more like a family to him than his own family did. They all had the same goals as he did and they just understood him.
âUgh, fine. Iâll go change.â Good, he canât be seen in his white tank top and pajama bottoms. Even if that tank top is a little small on him and defines his aged muscles well.
Hopefully the slacks you picked out will define his ass some, and the navy button up will fit snuggly on his torso. You almost lose focus just thinking about it. Your determination to finish this cake is what brings you out of dreamland.
You set down the main icing and pick up one with a smaller tip to add little details and write âHappy 30th Birthday Hajime!â In the signature Aoba Johsai turquoise.
When the cake is finished you worked on making sure all the decorations were up to par. Since this is only a small party, the decorations are kept to a minimum. Minimal but fitting of course.
When your husband was away training professional athletes, he would send you silly snaps of him with different filters. Of course you saved all of them for this occasion. There were at least twenty different printed out faces of your husband with silly filters that you had saved from your chats.
You wasted no time hanging them up, giggles following suit as you looked at the silly pictures.
The last one doesnât get hung up because Hajime surprises you and snatches the picture from your hands.
You got a little whiff of the cologne he was wearing, a smile graces your face when french vanilla and spicy cinnamon tickles your nose. Upon turning around you see him wearing the outfit you picked out and you gotta admit that he looks even better than you imagined he would.
âWhatâs all of this?â The pictures are what heâs implying but you canât focus on anything besides the way his muscles bulge when he waves his arm around to signify all the pictures you had hung up.
âOh nothing. Just something to entertain your friends with!â Your giggles only multiple when you hear a loud groan leave his lips.
âThese look awful Iâm taking them down.â He doesnât even get the chance to because the doorbell rings at the perfect moment.
âI donât think so,â you sing-song, âyou need to go welcome in your guests.â
Said guests give a loud knock and four more doorbell rings. Hajime rolls his eyes so hard youâre surprised they donât get stuck in the back of his head, âMust be that annoying Shittykawa.â
That nickname spilling from his lips proves just how much he needs this party. His friends bring out a side of him that doesnt have to pretend or worry about being judged, because they get him.
âHAPPY BIRTHDAY IWA-CHAN!â Fills your ears when your husband opens the door. Hanamaki and Matsukawa join in mocking Oikawaâs voice, âHappy birthday Iwa-chan~â the two mock in unison.
âShut up!â Oikawa quips before scoffing, âalways being mean to me, I can never catch a break!â Of course he brings his dramatics into your kitchen.
His brows unfurrow when he takes sight of you and he gasps very dramatically, â[name]-chan! LOOKING AS BEAUTIFUL AS EVER!!â Oikawa basically flops onto you and wraps his arms around you in a hug.
But you have to remember this a 6â1 athlete, not someone of your stature so you almost fall over when he flops on you.
âOi, idiot stop flirting with my wife!â Hajime screams from the front door.
Hanamaki and Matsukawa make their way into the kitchen. âToruâs back to wife stealing again?â Matsukawa asks with a smug look. Oikawa has a huge reputation and he usually maintains it well, a scandal like this sounds quite interesting!
âOh? He stole someoneâs wife?â You ask setting out silverware and handing out party hats, which Yahaba says is corny, but what do you care?
âYou guys are twisting the story! She didnât tell me that she had a husband!â Hanamaki, ever the instigator, tells Oikawa that itâs still bad he was seeing a married woman.
More of his team starts to file in: Kunimi, Kyotani, Kindachi, and Watari.
These grown men (Oikawa, Maki, and Mattsun) are actually having a petty argument. You know the two are purposefully riling up Toru, maybe they wanted a reaction from Hajime, who knows, but youâre going to be the one to put it to rest.
âHey! No fighting on Hajiâs birthday. Also Oikawa are you really gonna let them rile you up like that, youâre a grown man for heavens sake.â Hajime makes his way from the entrance of your house to steal a kiss from your lips.
âYeah listen to my wife.â Kunimi makes a gagging noise and you just giggle.
âWelcome everyone! Iâm glad you all could make it to Hajimeâs 30th birthday and yes, it means a lot for all of you to be here. He may not say or express it enough but he really does love you guys.â All eyes shift from you to Hajime and he blushes slightly at your confession.
âBabe-â He mumbles before heâs interrupted by his best friend.
âWeâd be dumb not to be able to tell that Iwa-chan loves us!â Hajime glared at the brunette and takes that as a warning to shut up.
After dinner is served and cake is eaten, you all shift to the living room were you enjoy drinks and just talk about old times, or catch each other up on new things in life.
Hajime will never admit it but heâs a lightweight. After three drinks his face is already flushed and his words are slightly slurred.
âHey! Listen up losers I have an announcement.â He says raising his glass (of water, you switched it out when he wasnât looking. All eyes are on him and you can see Oikawa recording this moment, most likely to use to taunt your husband later.
âI- I fuckinâ love you guys so much. You guys are the best bunchaâ idiots Iâve ever met. And- and I wouldnât have it any other way. Not only were you guys there for me as a team you guys were at my wedding and I hope youâll be there for me again in the future.â He yells out cheers and everyone raises their glasses to clink it with his.
âWe love you too, Iwaizumi!â The group yells in unison. Well maybe not Kunimiâ he kinda mumbles it.
The rest of the night contains laughter and pure joy from this amazing celebration.
âHow do you feel, honey?â You ask him as he rests his head on your shoulder, no doubt ready for bed, since he usually doesnât stay up later than 10:30 and itâs 1 am.
âLike the luckiest fuckinâ guy on earth.â That brings a smile to your face.
âThat beats no party, huh? Mr. I didnât want a party.â
âDidnât realize how much I missed these idiots.â He sighs in contentment.

Secret Admirer
Pairing - Alastor X fem! Reader
Plot - Fluff, building up friendship, secret admirer, physical contact? đ«ą
A/N - Iâm either gonna cringe so bad at this prompt or really like it đ also I cannot sleep itâs almost 2am đȘđą
Itâs has been only a couple of months ever since Charlie brought you in to stay and work at the Hazbin Hotel, and letâs say you felt home sweet home.
Even though you were still adjusting to the new place over all, it was definitely better than staying with roommates who wouldnât even pay for their part of the rent, you were scrolling on your phone, slightly tilted to the couch arm. You were bored out of your mind, you finished all your tasks, and it didnât look like the others needed help with their jobs. You couldnât help but think about a special someone in mind, Alastor.
At first, you and Alastor seemed to hate each other, but the more you both got to know each other, it wasnât as bad as you thought it would be. You put down your phone on your side and turned it off, thinking deeper. Of course, heâs such a tease with his sinister smile of his, but you thought it was charming.
When you were done thinking about this âdeerâ of yours, you felt a pair of eyes on you. You looked around to see if anyone was there except for husk because obviously he was working at the bar, but nobody else to be seen. You shrugged it off. As you were about to switch apps, someone had snatched your phone out of your hands, it was Alastor.
âI already told you my dear, no phones allowed in this hotel.â He held your phone with his two fingers, like it was something disgusting or smelly. You sighed while looking up at Alastor, as it was already the fifth time this week he had done this. He took your phone, gave you a lecture, and then make it disappear. âWhy do you care so much? Plus how long have you been watching me? I thought you were up in your radio tower.â You said as you stood up, crossing your arms.
Alastor was slightly stunned for you to know how he was watching you from afar, as your secret admirer it was kind of hard to keep it in. âWell dear, we donât want the Vâs to get to us yâknow, plus your eyes are glued to it, why not focus your eyes on me instead?â He tilted your head to look up at him. You slightly gulped with nervousness, but shook it off immediately.
âWhatever, Iâm gonna go to my room, bye Al.â You scoffed as you sat up, walking to your own room. Alastor watched you walk away, sighing once out of his sight. He didnât mean to make you annoyed at him, but it was just the honest truth.
You were obviously tired of Alastor doing this. As you slammed your door behind you, you plopped down on your soft bed, groaning in your pillow. You turned your head to the side to look at your clock on your bedside, with a picture of you and the others hanging out with each other, and having genuinely good time. You picked it up and smiled at it, and put the picture frame back.
After a few hours, you heard a knock on your door. You turn your head to ask, âWho is it?â No response. You sigh and open the door , you look down to see a little gift box. You pick it up and turn around, still having the door opened. You look at the tag that says, âFrom Alastorâ You smile at it, opening the box to see a letter and your souvenir.
You open the letter to read,
To my dearest,
I apologize for taking your phone, again.. Iâm just saying all this and that because I donât want the Vâs to ruin the hotel, I hope you understand.. I let a souvenir for you so it hopefully distracts you from your electronic.
-Alastor
You smiled warmly again and hugged the souvenir and letter, appreciating it. You felt a pair of warm hands wrap around you from the back, making you stunned. Alastor snuggled his head into your neck, his smile cracking a little. He muttered, âIâm sorry, I hope you can forgive meâ and snuggled closer, tightening his grip. You never seen him like this before, after all he was the Radio Demon.
âI forgive you.â
Pecking his cheek.
AGGHHHHH THIS IS SCTUALLY SO CUTEE

lovesick (XIV)
â pairing: yandere ot7 x (f) reader â word count: 5.8k â warnings: yandere, obsessive behaviour, other content that may be triggering. â summary: You dreamed of the day you would get your very own soulmark. Though, you didnât expect to wake up to a searing hurt in your arm, the phantom pain of your shoulder being dislocated and your forearm fractured. As if dealing with the worst possible soulmark ever wasnât bad enough, you also have to come to terms with the fact that youâre being stalked. When the letters and gifts you receive begin to escalate and the police offers no help, you have no other option than to figure out whoâs behind it yourself â and hopefully before itâs too late.
Previous - Next
"Darling."
You glance up at Namjoon, abandoning the half-finished scarf you've been slowly unraveling for the last hour. He stands at the foot of the couch, glasses slipping down his nose as he struggles to hold on to all of the books piled up in his arms.
You jump out of your seat to help him, grabbing half of the stack to place it on the table next to you with a small huff.
The books are thick and heavy, and you doubt that any of the volumes are under five hundred pages. Most of the spines in Namjoon's arms look old and weathered, like their proper place should be under a glass case in a museum instead of a library.
Namjoon breathes out a sigh of relief as he carefully deposits the rest of the books next to the others. He nudges his glasses back in place with a small chuckle as he says, "I must be getting out of shape, I don't remember them being this heavy."
"I doubt it," You mutter, sneaking a quick look at how visible Namjoon's muscles are even under his thick sweater.Â
"What did you say, darling? I didn't catch it," Namjoon gives you a curious look.Â
"Ah, it's nothing!" You flash him a quick smile, swiftly shifting your focus back to the table.Â
Namjoon furrows his brows at the way you suddenly avert your eyes, the tops of your cheeks growing warm. He glances down at his sweater, worried that he might have missed a stain. There's nothing that looks out of the ordinary, but Namjoon still dusts off the bright red wool for good measure, a little perplexed by the strange look you were giving him.Â
"I brought the books you asked for, this is everything we had on soulmates and soulbonds," Namjoon clears his throat. He steps closer to the table, picking up a few of the books before he starts sorting them into smaller piles, "These are the most recent publications and the ones furthest to the right are the oldest ones. I found a couple down in the archives too. They're not supposed to leave the library since they're so old but, well, I'm sure no one would mind a little exception. I know you'll take good care of them."Â
"I'll be careful," You nod, brushing a finger over the spine of what looks to be the oldest book.Â
"Good," Namjoon flashes you a warm grin, his dimples on show. He reaches out to stroke your hair, tucking a lock behind your ears as he gently says, "I hope they can be a nice distraction for you. I know you've been feeling down since you talked to Heejun."
"Thank you," You give him a tight smile, refusing to comment on it. You know it annoys them that you're not willing to open up more, that you don't want to talk about your emotions, but what's the use in bringing up something they won't understand? They are the ones making you sad, not Heejun.Â
It's been a week since you last spoke to him, and your heart still aches from it. Hearing his voice felt like splitting open a barely closed wound. You can't shake off how mournful he sounded when he said his goodbyes, like he knew you wouldn't be able to contact him again for quite some time. It has left you feeling unsettled. And, since your days are filled with nothing; you have more than enough time to think, think, and think some more. You sometimes wonder if cabin fever will take you out before the soulbond does.Â
It feels like time barely passes here and yet you know that the sun rises and sets, that the minutes are steadily ticking away even if you feel frozen. Using your phone finally gave you an opportunity to pinpoint the date. The day you talked to Heejun was December 11th and now that one week has already passed, there are only seven days left until Christmas. It's odd to think back to how you celebrated the holidays last year, and how different your life was then. You knew of your soulmates but you didn't know them. You were scared but you were free.Â
You shake yourself loose from your thoughts as Namjoon presses a soft kiss to your cheek, catching the tail end of his sentence as he says, "â for you, just call for me if you need any help, darling."Â
"Great, I'll do that," You say. Namjoon doesn't seem to have noticed your wavering attention.Â
You can only assume he mentioned he would leave you to read in peace, as he gives you another warm smile before he straightens up and exits the room. You hear him greet Hoseok in the kitchen, their voices just distant enough that you can't pick up on what they're talking about.Â
Taking a deep breath, you try to empty your mind to focus on the task at hand. You did ask Namjoon for these books for a reason, so you must utilize the time you have. Namjoon seems to have borrowed the entire section the library has on soulmate-related books, so it's only a matter of time before someone comes asking for them.
You decide you might as well begin with the newer books first, they should hopefully contain all the information and studies that have been done on the bond over the last three hundred years or so. You grab one that looks somewhat familiar to you, a newer edition of a volume you're sure you did a paper on back in middle school. Skimming through it, you quickly skip to the section that talks more in-depth about bonds. You already know all of the basics, the history, the tale of the first two soulmates â it's practically ingrained into you from birth. What you need is something different, something uncommon in the sea of familiar facts.Â
You're disappointed when you realize that the book barely touches upon soulbonds with more than two people. Having two or more soulmates isn't that uncommon but it's also not the norm. The most you've ever heard of was a group of five soulmates and they were treated as a media spectacle from the moment they announced it. You remember the headlines reading along the lines of rare, strange and unprecedented â so you can only imagine that if there are more groups like them out there, they're keeping quiet about it. The soulmates that did choose to step forward about their bond were insistent that it was the same as a bond between two people; they all loved each other and their connection was equally as strong for every soulmate. Their situation was clearly very different from yours.Â
You close the book with a huff, moving on to the next one. There's a brief mention that soulbonds with more than two soulmates require a bit more work, but that's all. It's barely enough to fill a sentence. Your frustration only grows with every book you look through, it's just the same information regurgitated over and over. You know there's something out there though, the story Namjoon told you shortly after you had woken up at the cabin must come from somewhere. Namjoon might have found the excerpt online but you do recall that it was supposedly from an old and rather obscure book.
Your gaze drifts over to the book that looks like it's falling apart at the seams, the etching on the cover so old that the letters have been lost to time. You find yourself holding your breath as you gingerly pick it out of the pile, wincing as you feel the pages shift within the book. There's a small note attached to the front of it, one that reads: NO PUBLIC ACCESS. For a split second it makes you pause, thoughts that it might actually be a valuable book crossing your mind, but you quickly disregard them. If this book was important, it would've never been left to rot in the library archive.Â
Carefully placing it in front of you, you open the front of the book slowly, mindful to prop it up with your hand so that you're not causing too much tension to the spine. The insides look as tattered as the front, the title page barely legible. The font is cursive and swooping, the letters blending together so well it's hard to make out much of it. In the end, all you can decipher is that it says soulmates and that it was written in the year 1783.
You turn the page, squinting at the faded words. The layout of it reminds you more of a diary than a book, with random dates placed before every entry. They explain how the author decided to travel around to gather stories about soulmates, soulbonds and the people they met along the way. After some twenty-odd pages, you finally come across what looks to be a table of contents. Tracing your finger down the side, you halt as you make out the words nucleus bonds.
Bingo.
You feel your pulse kick up a beat as you flip to the correct page. The title reads 'Highly unusual cases of soulbonds and soulmates' and you can tell from the first sentence that this must be the excerpt Namjoon had found online.Â
It describes just what Namjoon talked about; that while there's always a risk of one soulmate feeling the bond more intensely than the other, the probability of it happening is heightened the bigger the bond is. Skewed bonds are typically seen in groups of four or more soulmates, as it is likely that one soulmate in particular becomes the nucleus of the bond â the center that holds it all together. The book goes on to mention examples, old cases of nucleus bonds you've never heard of. They seem more like fables than true stories, all of them more fantastical than the last, but it does seem that Namjoon was right. In the olden days, nucleus bonds were viewed as a gift bestowed upon them from the heavens. That the ones that found themselves experiencing it were special â powerful.Â
"What a fucking joke," You sigh.
The only thing this bond has made you feel is helpless.Â
There's a small paragraph at the end of the page, one you suspect wasn't included on the digital scan Namjoon found.
While powerful, nucleus bonds can quickly go awry if the proper precautions are not taken to ensure the bond's well-being. For ill effects of the bond, please see the entry on Lovesickness.
You feel your mouth go dry, a heavy pit settling in your stomach. This must be it. You can't help the slight tremble to your fingers as you flip to the correct page, unease and excitement blending into a confusing feeling. You desperately want to know what's going on, if there's something that's causing the boys to act the way that they are, but the title worries you. Not all illnesses can be cured. You've survived on the small hope that you might be able to help them but if that gets taken away, what will you have left?
You chew on the inside of your cheek, nervous, as you land on the right entry.Â
// Lovesickness Lovesickness, or soul sickness, occurs when the bond between two or more soulmates is neglected. This illness has only been recorded in bonds with a nucleus soulmate and is thus regarded as a prominent ill effect. While skewed bonds may occur in any soulbond, it is even more likely to do so in instances where one soulmate is viewed as the nucleus. It is a dangerous soulbond, as it makes the other soulmates unstable and there is an especially high risk that they will crave closeness with the nucleus to make up for the weakened connection to the rest of their soul-group. The other soulmates or "the outsiders", are known to grow irrational, obsessive, angry, highly emotional, and in some extreme cases, they can even be influenced by other outsiders' emotions despite their weakened bond. After first contact is made, it is imperative that the affected soulmates spend time together to minimize the risk of soul sickness. Failing to do so will have grave consequences. //
"Oh gods," You whisper, staring at the book in mild horror.Â
If what the book is saying is correct, then that means that everything that has happened over the last year isn't completely their fault.Â
The soulbond must have started slowly poisoning their minds ever since they met years ago. They didn't even know they were soulmates back then, not until that night in Hoseok's shop, so you can't imagine they have been able to nurture the bond properly. Their connection was so weak they probably mistook it as simply wanting to become friends and even though you know they're all close, you also know that their schedules are so conflicting that it's impossible for all of them to hang out as much as they should have. The bond was practically doomed even before they met you.Â
It makes sense that they all came together before you did, that perhaps there was a part of them that couldn't seek the nucleus out before they had collected the rest of the group. The sickness must've become even worse once they did find you â festering and growing stronger the longer they tried to stay away. You wonder if it was the bond that made them keep their distance back then. If their souls recognized that your connection to them was weaker than it was supposed to be, maybe that's part of what made them so scared to approach you. Regardless, it had likely reached a critical point when they decided to kidnap you, their souls so affected, so warped, by the illness that they had no other choice.Â
All of this â everything that has happened â has been out of their control. How were they supposed to fight an illness they didn't know they had?Â
You cover your face with both hands, muffling your choked breaths. You feel lost in a way you haven't before. Their actions are still not excused, you can't find it in yourself to forgive them for all the hurt and trauma they've caused you. But you can understand why they ended up going down the path they did now, because, well, it turns out they didn't have much of a choice at all.
There's no right answer here and you're finding yourself at a loss of what to do. You doubt that telling them about it will change anything, not when they're this far gone already. They'll probably just look at it as you trying to distance yourself from them again.Â
You drag your fingers down your face with a low groan, glancing down at the book. The entry on lovesickness doesn't go past the page and you can't find any additional information that describes what you should do if something like this has already occurred; just that it's important to make sure that the bond doesn't get messed up in the first place. With the book being so old, well over two hundred years, it's not like you can reach out to the author for help either. But there must be something you can do. Â
Thrumming your fingers against the table, you shift your focus towards the kitchen, to the soft sound of Hoseok's laughter. Now that you think about it, the boys have become more trusting, more mellow, over the past months. They have started leaving you alone for longer periods of time and they have calmed down significantly compared to when they first brought you here. Perhaps.. If your distance is what worsened their illness, maybe this â being close â is what is going to cure them? You doubt it can ever bring them back to normal, whatever that may be, but it could help stabilize them.Â
If you try, really try, to accept them for what they are now and return their affection, it might help the bond settle faster.Â
You give yourself a weak nod, closing the book as you push yourself up on your feet. You don't like thinking about affection, love, as just a means to an end, but it's not like the situation you're in is normal. You're willing to do anything if it'll get you out of here, and in the end, you're doing this to help both yourself and them. You might have tried to deny it this whole time but it doesn't change the fact that they're still your soulmates. As awful as it is, you have some responsibility over them too.Â
You ignore the queasy feeling lingering in your stomach, shaking out your limbs before you muster up the most genuine smile you can. You just have to try.Â
"Hey guys," You call out, crossing the common room to go join Hoseok and Namjoon in the kitchen, "What are you up to?"
Soft sunlight streams in through the windows, warming your feet just so as you stand in one of the illuminated patches on the floor. There's activity from every corner of the cabin, Sundays being the only day all of them are able to gather at the same time. It's been four days since you realized just how messed up your bond is and you've been trying your best to stop pushing the boys away since then.
You look wistfully out of the window, the white snow sparkling under the sun. You haven't really been much outside since you tried to escape, their trust in you is too broken to allow you to. The most you've done is stand on top of the stairs with the door open; Namjoon waiting a few steps down in case you should be stupid enough to try to run, and Seokjin behind you, holding on to one of your hands.
You miss being able to walk around and move your body more, and you truly are beginning to go a little stir-crazy.Â
"Hi baby," Jimin croons as he wraps his arms around your waist, gluing himself against your back, "What are you thinking about?"Â
You lean into Jimin's hold, your heart quickening at the kiss he plants at the back of your neck. You let out a small sigh as you confess, "I'm bored."Â
"Bored, hm? Anything in particular you'd like to do? I can think of a few ways to waste time."Â
You can hear the smirk in Jimin's voice, heat rising to your cheeks as you remember the night you spent together.
"Actuallyâ" You pause, bracing yourself for a negative reaction before you say, "I'd like to do something outside today. The weather is so nice."Â
Jimin's arms tighten around you like a snake, so tense you worry they might pop right off his body. "Outside?" He echoes.Â
"What's outside?" Hoseok seems to have abandoned whatever he was doing earlier in his room, his sudden appearance startling you slightly.Â
"Y/n was just telling me that she's bored and that she wants to do something. Outside," Jimin fills him in, voice void of any emotion.Â
Hoseok is silent as he walks across the room, meeting your gaze with raised eyebrows as you turn to look at him. He doesn't look away until he's standing next to you and Jimin, his eyes briefly flickering down to the death grip the younger has on you before they fly back to your face. "Why would you want that, sunshine?"Â
It's not an immediate no â so you jump on the chance to play it up a little and use it to your advantage.Â
"I just want to hang out with you guys outside, maybe do something fun. I just thought it would be nice to do something, you know, together," You pout. The sparkling snow in your peripheral gives you an idea. "Maybe a snowball fight?"Â
Hoseok shares a look with Jimin over your shoulder, one that's long enough to almost make you nervous. Jimin eventually relaxes when Hoseok gives him a nod. It's hard to tell what's going through his head but surprisingly, Hoseok doesn't seem too put off by the idea. Maybe they really have begun to trust you again, or maybe this is just another test. Either way, it's something you can make use of.Â
Hoseok reaches out to touch your cheek, his lips curving into a heart-shaped smile as he says, "That sounds like a good idea, sunshine. I'll go ask the others if they want to join."
"I call dibs on being on Y/n's team," Jimin says, smug.Â
Hoseok's smile grows a little more dangerous as he moves his attention back to Jimin, "We'll see about that, Jiminie."Â
You grunt as Seokjin tugs firmly on your jacket, sending you a step forward.
You're wearing so many layers you can barely move, all of them too big. The boys took great joy in dressing you up in their winter clothes, as nothing you have at the cabin is fit for withstanding the cold. You're glad you don't have to freeze, but the fact that everything you're wearing is too big doesn't evade you. They must still be worried about you trying to run away if they're trying to impede your ability to move.
You know not to make a fuss about it though, it's better to just go along with their whims when it's something so harmless.Â
"Watch your chin," Seokjin warns before he drags the zipper up, sealing you in.Â
"Thanks," You say, nodding for good measure. Your voice is so muffled behind Jungkook's thick scarf that you can barely hear your own voice.Â
Seokjin flashes you a grin, gesturing to the door. "Go on then, sweetheart. You're going to overheat if you stay inside here for too long."Â
You waddle over to the door, practically dragging your feet with how heavy the boots you borrowed from Namjoon are. You can hear the others talking outside, only Seokjin left behind as he volunteered to help you get everything on. You're admittedly glad you didn't just brush him off because there's no way you would be able to bend down with how thick your jacket and snow pants are.Â
A burst of biting cold air hits you as you open the door. It takes you a moment to get used to the temperature difference but once you do, you shuffle down the stairs as quickly as you can manage. Hearing the snow crunch under your boots and feeling the sun warm the little skin you have exposed makes your heart swell. You finally feel alive again.Â
"Y/n, there you are!" Taehyung throws the half-formed snowball in his hands to the ground, waving you over to where the rest of them are busy shoveling snow. The boys have already managed to clear a decent-sized patch, patting the shoveled snow into two barriers on the opposite sides of the cleared ground. Jungkook and Yoongi have even had time to start making two piles of snowballs, stacking up a good amount of them.Â
Taehyung is sporting a wide smile by the time you make it over, his eyes twinkling as he opens his mouth.
"Don't say anything," You cut him off, huffing from the restrictive layers. Taehyung holds up his hands in surrender, chuckling as you try (and fail) to cross your arms.Â
"I wasn't going to," He looks you up and down once, biting down on his lip to stifle his laughter. "But if I was, I'd say you look like a cute marshmallow."Â
You groan. "This is way too much! I can barely move."Â
"It's just to keep you warm, babe. We don't want you getting sick," Taehyung bops your nose with his glove. "Your team will cover you during the fight anyway, you won't have to move around too much."Â
"Fine, if you say so," You murmur, not entirely convinced. You know all of the boys, especially Jungkook, have a competitive streak, so you doubt it's going to be as easy as Taehyung makes it seem.
"Seokjin hyung!" Taehyung calls out as he looks over your shoulder, "Hurry up! We need to divide the teams!"
It's quickly decided that the best way to do so is by playing Rock-Paper-Scissors. It takes a few rounds to get it right but in the end, you're teamed up with Hoseok, Seokjin, and Namjoon, while the other four make up the opposing team.Â
"My poor angel, I can't believe she's been doomed to be on the losing team," Jimin sighs, all dramatic. He shoots Seokjin a teasing smile, like he just knows his hyung won't be able to resist rising to the bait.Â
"Losing team?!" Seokjin exclaims, just as predicted, poking his finger into Jimin's chest, "How are you expecting to win? You and Yoongi are too short to even look over the barrier!"Â
"Hey! Don't drag me into this," Yoongi pouts, swatting Seokjin's hand away from Jimin. "Let's just start the game. Namjoon, what are the rules?"Â
Namjoon claps his hands together, gathering everyone's attention. "Alright, so the rules are very simple. You're allowed to run up to the line that goes through the middle of the cleared area. That means that some of the trees around here can be used for cover as long as you don't cross the line. If you're hit, you're out and have to wait off to the side for the game to end. One team wins when all the players on the opposite team are eliminated. Yoongi hyung and Jungkook have already made a pile of snowballs for each team, but we'll get exactly one minute before the game starts to make as many additional ones as possible."
"Everyone got it?" He asks, looking around the group. You all chime out yes, watching as Namjoon pulls out his phone and sets the timer to 60 seconds.
"Okay, as soon as I hit this, the game starts! Three, two, oneâ Go!"
You hurry as best you can over to the closest barrier, letting Hoseok drag you along to give you some extra speed. He helps you kneel once you reach it, looking over at Seokjin and Namjoon as he asks, "Okay, so what's our plan? We can't let sunshine get hit."Â
"They have Jungkook, so they're going to go in for an intense attack right away. I think our best bet is to just wait until they start slowing down and then attack back. Jimin is probably going to try to sneak closer to the line once it dies down from their side, so let's try to take him out quickly," Namjoon says, keeping his voice low enough that it won't carry over to the other team.
"Sounds good," Seokjin hums. He hastily forms another snowball, adding it to the growing pile beside you.Â
"I think you better try to stay out of the way as much as possible, darling, they can get pretty brutal," Namjoon adds, shooting you a worried look.
"That's probably for the best," You agree, slumping further down behind the barrier. There's no way you'll be able to play when you're this bundled up, you doubt you'll be able to duck in time if you even attempt to throw a snowball.Â
"Okay, thenâ" Namjoon's eyes go wide as the alarm on his phone rings out into the near quiet forest. He mutters a curse as he ducks down the best he can, fumbling to turn it off.
The moment it goes silent, mayhem breaks loose. Snowballs start raining down immediately, hitting the barrier with dull thuds. You squeak as one lands right in front of your knees, nearly hitting you. You quickly shuffle to the side, practically crawling, as you hear the other team yell and taunt yours to fight back.Â
Just as the attack begins to wind down, Namjoon gestures for the rest of you to lay low while he peeks over the edge.
He's hit in the shoulder before you can even blink, a burst of snow raining down on the rest of the team. Namjoon flashes you all a dumbfounded look as he stumbles back, reaching up to dust off the lingering snow as someone calls out 'You're out!' from the other side.
"They mean business," Namjoon mumbles, shaking his head as he hands his snowball over to Seokjin.Â
"We'll get revenge for you, Joonie," Hoseok's expression is somber, a little too serious for a snowball fight.Â
"They always get a little too into it, don't mind them," Seokjin whispers, pulling a face.
The moment Namjoon has safely left the area, the fight picks back up, Hoseok and Seokjin joining in on it. It doesn't take long before you hear an indignant cry coming from the other team, Seokjin yelling out a cheer at the direct hit he landed on Jimin.Â
You feel like a sitting duck behind the barrier, unable to help your team with how tightly you're bundled up. With the boys still distracted by the ongoing fight, you quickly unzip your jacket in your crouched position, throwing it to the side. Thanks to Seokjin going a little overboard with dressing you up, you already had another jacket underneath to keep you warm. You smile, already feeling a little lighter.Â
"Keep going, I'll cover your left," You murmur to Hoseok as you crawl behind him, your sight set on one of the closest trees. You ignore him as he hisses out your name, clearly confused as to why you're moving away from the barrier that's protecting you.Â
There's a decent gap between the edge of the barrier and the nearest tree, so you'll have to make a run for it and hope that you manage to catch the others off-guard enough that they won't be able to hit you. You take a deep breath as you bring yourself up to a crouch, placing your hands on the snow for extra support. You shoot off as fast as you can but the big snow pants slow you down significantly, almost reducing your speed to a leisurely stroll. You barely manage to duck behind the first tree, taking cover, when you hear a snowball explode against it.Â
"How could you aim for your soulmate?!" You hear Hoseok yell out.Â
"Uhm, all is fair in love and war?" Taehyung sheepishly calls back.Â
You huff, collecting yourself for a minute before you dare to peek around the tree. The coast seems to be clear, neither Jungkook nor Taehyung is looking your way. You can't spot Yoongi, so you can only assume he's ducked behind the barrier, making more snowballs to keep up with the tempo the two youngest are throwing them at.Â
It's now or never.
You use the tree to give yourself a needed push forward, running towards the much larger one that's square in the middle of the cleared area. You're so focused on making it there without getting hit from the side that it takes you a second too long to realize that someone is coming full speed right at you. You barely manage to slow down before you crash right into Yoongi, the two of you stumbling into each other. Yoongi grabs your waist to steady you just as you reach out for his shoulders, your eyes locked in surprise.Â
"You scared me," Yoongi wheezes, pulling you tighter against him as another snowball smacks into the tree.Â
"Sorry," You puff, "You caught me off-guard too."Â
You're both panting from the tiresome terrain, your breaths swirling up towards the sun. Yoongi's cheeks are rosy from the cold, the tip of his nose colored a precious pink. He looks so cute that you almost don't know what to do with yourself.
Your gloved hands find their way from Yoongi's shoulders to his cheeks, cupping them as you ask, "Are you cold?"Â
"I-" Yoongi doesn't get the chance to reply before you hear Taehyung get hit, a chorus of groans and cheers sounding from the other side of the tree.
If Taehyung is out, that means that only Yoongi and Jungkook are left. You might not have been able to do much until now, but you'd be damned if you can't at least help take Yoongi out. It might be time to play dirty, even if what you're about to do makes you feel a little bad.
You swoop in to kiss Yoongi the moment you hear Taehyung being greeted by Jimin and Namjoon, pressing your cold lips to his in a chaste kiss. You feel him going pliant in your hands as your heart begins to race, your body burning hot despite the cold.
Yoongi has a starstruck look in his eyes when you lean back, one that quickly morphs into confusion as you yell out Hoseok's name before you duck. A snowball hits Yoongi square in the chest a second later, forcing him to take a step back.Â
"Youâ Seriously?" Yoongi shoots you a betrayed look as you get back to your feet.Â
"I'm sorry," You flash him an apologetic smile as you brush the snow away. "I think all of the competitiveness might have rubbed off on me."
"Please forgive me?" You murmur, planting another kiss on his lips, one that lingers a little longer.Â
"You're gonna be the death of me," Yoongi groans, shaking his head at the bright smile he gets in response. "Hurry back to your team, Y/n, you haven't won yet."Â
Jungkook might be a great player, but he's no match for 3 against 1. It barely takes a minute from the moment Yoongi joins the sidelines until Hoseok lands a hit on him, finally eliminating the entire opposing team. Jungkook looks stunned that he actually got hit, eyes wide as he touches his stomach. Jimin and Taehyung groan in unison, immediately beginning to bicker about what went wrong.Â
"Loser team my ass, Park Jimin!" Seokjin points to the sidelines with a wide grin, laughing as Jimin flips him off.Â
Hoseok wraps you up in a hug, swaying you from side to side as he laughs.Â
"We did it!" You squeal, wrapped up in a burst of happiness as Namjoon comes running over, the entire team huddling together as you celebrate your win.Â
"Well done, angel, I didn't know you were so sneaky," Seokjin chuckles, kissing your cheek.Â
"I think we might have found our secret weapon," Hoseok agrees, eying you fondly as he ruffles your hair.Â
You look over to the other team as you attempt to duck away from Hoseok's hand, your smile growing bigger as you notice the other boys laughing and joking around too. Jungkook seems to be mimicking Yoongi throwing a snowball that didn't go very far, causing Jimin to laugh so hard that he falls over.Â
Your heart swells at the scene, at finally seeing all of the boys act normal and happy. Maybe you actually can do this. Maybe it's not too late after all.Â
"Come on, let's bring it in!" Namjoon grins, grabbing your hand.
As you all jump around in a circle, arms tangled together and spirits high; all you can think of is that it feels nice â special, even â like something you could get used to.Â
a/n: what do we think about the new information the mc found â will it change anything?? and i hope you enjoyed some domestic time spent with the soulmates! (enjoy the good vibes while they last friends <3) i know i promised taegi last time but that has been pushed back to ch 15, so apologies for that, buuut you'll get taegi and namkook smut in one ch so i think that's a good deal, no? đ

hiii!! i love your writing so much i think iâve read every single thing youâve ever posted. iâm genuinely obsessed đ«¶đ«¶ i was wondering if you could write something where the reader and remus have been dating/talking for a little while and she hasnât had her first kiss yet and she starts to get nervous everytime she thinks heâs abt to kiss her and she runs away?? iâm ngl this is based off of very real events in my life đđ
i love you so much!! hope your doing amazing
Hi gorgeous, thanks so much! This is soooo relatable of you haha, I have a library of hilarious stories about my very hyper friend who kept literally springing away from guys she liked who were trying to kiss her, but it does make for some very interesting (and often very sweet) conversations!
Remus Lupin x fem!reader ⥠1k words
On your first official date with Remus, the two of you went to a drive-in movie. You kept your seatbelt on the entire time.Â
You only realized halfway through, mentally kicking yourself for being so jittery youâd lost all sense of normalcy, but by then it felt too late. Itâd be awkward to take it off halfway through the movie, try to play that off as casual. Youâd made your bed. You didnât unbuckle until Remus dropped you off at your house at the end of the night.Â
On your second date, youâre determined to be less uptight. You want him to know that you really do like him, even if your nerves make you jump and flinch whenever he gets close. At the Italian restaurant, itâs difficult to find a pasta dish without garlic, but you manage it. Youâre a girl with an agenda. The two of you split a chocolate cake for dessert. Itâs delicious, probably, though you canât focus on much besides Remusâ story and the way his mouth moves as he tells it. How he tucks one corner of his bottom lip between his teeth when heâs trying to hide a smile.Â
You have to hope belatedly that you havenât somehow smeared chocolate all over your face while eating. Youâre not at all confident you wouldâve noticed.Â
Itâs a short walk back to your place, and you manage to jabber the whole way, a masterclass in self-sabotage. Remus doesnât seem to mind, his hand light and cordial on your back as he guides you up the steps to your door. You savor the touch. It takes every ounce of willpower you have not to spring away.Â
âIt sounds really interesting,â he says graciously as you finish your tangent about the book youâve just read. âIâll have to pick up a copy.âÂ
âI can lend you mine,â you offer. âMaybe I can bring it the next time we hang out?â Your voice tips up hopefully at the end of the question, and warmth touches your cheeks.Â
A similar pinkening spreads across Remusâ freckles. He smiles at you, the scar across his lip stretching. Youâre spellbound.Â
âYeah, that sounds great.â You might be imagining it, but you could swear his eyes flit to your lips. âI had a great time tonight,â he says. âI really like talking to you.âÂ
Your voice is soft. âI like talking to you, too.âÂ
He takes a step towards you, and itâs like your muscles stage a coup. You take an involuntary step backward, a smile plastering itself uncomfortably on your face.Â
âThanks for everything,â you say brightly. âGoodnight!â
You spin and go for the door handle, and youâre nearly inside before you hear Remusâ quiet âWait.âÂ
You turn. Lead in your bones.Â
Remus is holding his palms up as if to show you heâs got no weapon.Â
âSorry,â he says, âI just wanted toâŠyou know Iâd never do anything you didnât want me to, right?âÂ
Youâre frozen stiff.Â
âLike, even if I thought there was a chance you didnât want to, I would neverâŠâ He shakes his head, looking lost. Guilt settles like a stone in your gut. âI guess Iâm a bit confused. If you donât want to do anything, thatâs completely fine, but sometimes it seems like you want me to kiss you, and then you donâtâŠâÂ
âRem,â you say. You feel like youâre breathing through a straw. âRemus, Iâm so sorry.âÂ
âDonât be sorry, sweetheart, itâs not your faultââÂ
âNo, it is. Itâs notâI donât want you to think Iâm scared of you or anything. Iâm not, itâs just, I get skittish.â You canât make yourself look at his eyes, your gaze stuck just shy of his chin. Your face feels aflame. âItâs not you. Iâm just nervous.âÂ
âOh.â Itâs a soft thing, more exhale than anything. Then his fingers curl under your chin, tipping your face up. âWell, you can relax, love. I was never going to make a move unless I got a clear signal from you first. But we can just take that off the table completely, if youâd like.â He gives you a small, gentle smile. âI only want you to feel comfortable.âÂ
Your heart zings right up into your throat. âI do feel comfortable,â you blurt. âI donât want it off the table.âÂ
Remusâ eyebrows flick upwards. âYou donât?âÂ
âNo,â you murmur, bashful.Â
His eyebrows come slowly back down, puckering slightly as he tries to figure you out. His eyes narrow until his lashes kiss. His tongue pokes into his cheek, just a little. You miss nothing. You find yourself taking in a quiet breath, steeling yourself.Â
You move across that tiny bit of air between you and find him there waiting.
Itâs everything you couldâve hoped for and yet startlingly simple. Remusâ lips are warm and soft, pressing into yours with an intensity that you suspect is nonetheless restrained for your benefit. He tastes like chocolate cake.Â
His mouth meanders over to the corner of your lips, granting one quick peck to your cheek before making its way back to the center of your mouth, reverent. He backs away slowly, easing you out of it.Â
âWasnât really expecting that,â he admits.
âMe neither. Was it alright?â Your voice is a bit breathy. âIâve never done that before.âÂ
For a moment, heâs quiet.Â
âThat was your first kiss?âÂ
You swallow, rubbing your lips together as you nod.Â
âSweetheart,â he grins, âyouâre a natural.âÂ
A giggle spurts out of you, dizzy with the taste of him and the novelty of it all. âYou mean it?âÂ
âI wouldnât lie to you.â He mimes drawing a cross over his heart. It occurs to you that you both seem infinitely more at ease than you have since dinner. The corner of Remusâ bottom lip goes between his teeth, his cheek dimpling. âI mean, there is something to be said for practice, though.âÂ
You donât fight your own grin; it comes out in full force. âMm, I think Iâve heard something about that. Practice makesâŠdefective, right? Something like that.âÂ
âCâmere.â Remus rolls his eyes at you, but as his arms wrap around you his smile mirrors yours.Â

Chin resting in your hand, you sat at a corner table by one of the large windows in Common Grounds skimming over the documents on your laptop. A half finished latte was on the table beside youâthe second one youâd had since you opened the shop about an hour ago now.Â
The deadline for filing taxes was just around the corner and here you were still needing to get everything finalized and officially sent in before it was considered late. Since Jaime had dropped Lily off at preschool this morning and you didnât need to pick her up until the afternoon, you figured now was the best time to finish the frustrating and tedious task that youâd been repeatedly putting off. It wasn't often that you had free moments where you werenât watching Lily or dealing with something at the coffee shop, so this morning while you were free you figured youâd try to finish working on itâeven if youâd rather have been back home sleeping in before eventually making your way into the shop.
With your focus fixed on your laptop, you weren't remotely paying attention to whoever had walked in through the front door of Common Grounds, even if your ears had vaguely registered Allisonâs usual friendly greeting from behind the counter while you worked. The typical morning rush at the coffee shop had ended about fifteen minutes ago and youâd long since stopped paying attention to every occasional straggler that passed through the door.Â
Left hand absently sliding along the table to grab your honey lavender latte, you reread one of the lines on your laptopâs screen, trying to make sense of all the frustrating tax language. Drawing the mug up to your lips for another drink, you tried to focus on the section you were currently reading, but your concentration was easily interrupted by a familiar, deep voice suddenly ordering by the register.
âJust a large coffee, black.â
Almost automatically your eyes slid over the top of your laptop, landing on the sight of none other than your new neighbor, Frank. His back was facing you as he pulled his card out of his wallet before sliding it through the card reader and paying for his drink. He was wearing his dark jacket again this morning and a pair of dark wash jeans. His expression looked fairly neutral this time from what you could see from the profile of his faceâhe wasn't smiling but he didn't look nearly as surly as when youâd first seen him yesterday, either.Â
Behind the counter, Allison sent him another friendly smile before turning around and beginning to make his coffee. As he slipped his wallet into the back pocket of his jeans, your eyes followed the movement of his hands, admittedly lingering on a particular part of him for a moment longer than necessary as his hands returned to his sides.Â
I wonder if he works out , you caught yourself thinking.
The memory of Frank crouching down to talk to your niece last night flashed through your mind as your gaze gradually slid its way up his back and towards his face again. You remembered the unexpected warm and friendly smile that had taken you by surprise when heâd accepted the cookies from Lily as you sat there. The memory of it began stirring up those confusing feelings inside of you once more. He certainly hadnât turned out to be what youâd expected, at least after that second interaction youâd now had with him. You found yourself wondering if Cora was right, maybe he wasnât such a bad guy after all. Maybe you'd just caught him in a bad mood yesterday morning.
You saw him begin to turn and make his way towards the end of the counter where customers picked up their orders and your eyes immediately darted back down to your laptop. Ducking your head, you pretended you were intensely focused on your laptop screen, desperately hoping he hadnât caught you staring at him. Youâd already embarrassed yourself enough with him thanks to Lily pointing out that youâd called him the grumpy man from the coffee shop, you didnât need him to catch you ogling him next. That would certainly make things even more embarrassing and uncomfortable at this point.
âAre you always here?â
Sucking in a sharp breath, you froze in your chair. Hand curling tighter around the handle of your coffee mug, you felt your body tense at the sound of his voice clearly directed at you. Considering how uninterested heâd been in small talk just yesterday morning, you figured heâd grab his coffee in silence and leave. You hadnât anticipated that heâd actually try to strike up a conversation with you, especially with him having a clear out because you obviously looked preoccupied at the table. He couldâve easily just grabbed his drink and left, ignoring you entirely.
Slowly your eyes shifted over towards Frank. He was leaning against the coffee shop counter, one of his elbows resting along it as his head cocked just a bit to the side, his eyes slightly narrowed as he studied you. One corner of his mouth was curled up just a fraction in something almost like a smile as he waited for you to respond. Clearing your throat, you tried to ignore the frenzied beating of your heart at the sudden attention from him.
âUsually,â you answered. âSort of comes with being the owner of the place.âÂ
Both of his dark brows rose marginally onto his forehead in something like surprise. You fought back the feeling of pride within you at his reaction. Though Frank quickly recovered, the look of surprise shifting into a smile that was almost as warm as the one youâd seen on his face last night when he was talking to Lily.
âIs that so?â he asked curiously. âYou own this place?â
You shrugged lightly in response, your eyes catching sight of Allisonâs head darting up from over his shoulder, staring at you from behind the counter. She was pouring the freshly brewed coffee for him into a to-go cup with a look of stunned disbelief on her face.Â
âNearest Starbucks is about twenty minutes from here,â you said, focusing back on Frank and trying to ignore Allison behind him as she began frantically mouthing things to you. âBesides grabbing a cup of coffee from one of the local fast food joints, there really arenât many options around here. Figured the town could use a coffee shop, so I opened one.â
Frank nodded his head, his eyes still on you. They looked far more friendly than they had yesterday morning when heâd been sizing you up, that was for sure.
âYeah, I noticed that,â he replied. âSorta the only place to go âround here for a good cup of coffee it seems.â
Unable to fight back a triumphant grin, it spread wide over your lips at his compliment. âGuess it just means youâre stuck with me while youâre here then,â you told him. When a brow curiously arched up onto his forehead at your comment, you quickly added on, âFor coffee. Since thereâs nowhere else to really grab a cup that doesnât taste like burnt garbage in this town, I mean.â
Allison headed over to the counter with his cup of coffee in hand, setting it down onto the surface near where he was leaning. Her eyes were darting curiously back and forth between the pair of you now.Â
Frank ducked his head, chuckling a little before he pushed off of the counter. âGuess your right,â he agreed. âLooks like we're both stuck with each other then.âÂ
He reached over, picking up his coffee from the counter while offering Allison a polite âthank youâ as he did. Her eyes grew wide when heâd turned back around to face you, her dumbstruck gaze focusing on his back. You had a feeling there were a plethora of questions already forming in her mind that youâd be hearing the moment he left.Â
Frank nodded his head once towards you. âYou have a good day now,â he said. âSâpose Iâll be seeing you again real soon, though.â
Something warm fluttered in your chest as he turned, making his way towards the coffee shop exit. As he walked, drawing his to-go cup up to his lips for a drink, your brain fumbled to form a coherent thought. You only briefly recovered just as he opened the door to the coffee shop.
âYou too!â you called out.
He was out the door with a small grin on his mouth, turning and making his way down the sidewalk and away from your shop without a backwards glance. Your eyes followed the back of him as he went, your mind reeling at the emotional whiplash of interacting with him once more. He definitely wasn't what you'd initially expected and you had no idea what to make of that.
Allisonâs fingers loudly snapping in front of your face broke you from your staring seconds later and you jumped in your chair. Eyes flying over towards her, you saw her standing beside your table.
âSpill,â she said immediately. âWhat the hell was that complete one-eighty about?â
âIâI donât know,â you stammered, watching as Allison plopped into the chair across from you. âIâm just as surprised as you are.â
âWell something must have happened,â she pressed, âbecause yesterday morning that man was all moody and rude, now today he's actually striking up small talk? Flirting with you?â
Cheeks heating, you focused back on your cup of coffee. You picked it up, bringing it up to your lips as you shook your head. âHe wasnât flirting, Ally,â you told her. âI think he was just being friendly.â
âUh huh,â she said, waving the idea off with a dismissive hand. âSo you mustâve run into him again since yesterday morning with the way he was talking to you. What happened? I want details.â
Drinking down some of your coffee, your eyes darted back down towards your laptop. You really needed to finish your taxes, but you had a feeling Allison wouldn't stop asking questions until you answered her. Figuring it'd just be easier to tell her about last night and move on, you released a soft sigh.
âYou know that duplex next to mine that's been vacant for awhile?â you asked, lowering the mug to the table. âThe one Cora has been struggling to fill?â
Allison nodded. âYes, I remember,â she answered. âShe said the other day she found a tenant when sheâd come in for a coffee.â
You pointed a finger out the shop's window in the direction which Frank had walked off in. Though he'd since disappeared now, having turned a corner or gotten into his truck.
âThat was him,â you told her.Â
Allisonâs eyes grew wide as she audibly gasped. âWhat?â she asked in surprise. â That beautiful man is your neighbor?â
Laughing lightly, you nodded your head. âYeah, and itâs just him. Lily was with me when Cora was telling me about him moving in the other day, so she'd had this idea to bake him cookies to welcome him to the neighborhood.â
âSheâs always such a sweet kid,â Allison mused aloud.Â
âMhmm,â you agreed. âThing is, she wanted to make cookies like we did for Valentineâs Day. You remember those?â
Allison burst into a laugh, throwing a hand over her mouth as she quickly tried to stifle the noise. She didnât succeed and you couldn't resist grinning and laughing a little yourself at the memory of your own shock at who'd opened the door to receive those cookies.Â
âYou mean to tell me,â Allison began, still trying to quell her laughter, âthat you dropped off pretty heart cookies to that guy yesterday?â
âYep,â you told her, still grinning. âThey were pink and covered in sprinkles. Lily even insisted on using one of those Valentineâs Day plates for them. So of course I had to bring her over to deliver them with me because there was no way in hell I was going to do that alone.â
A snort of amusement left Allison before she bit her lip, shaking her head. You couldn't help laughing a little more yourself.
âYou should have seen my face when it was him that opened the door,â you continued. âI was certain he was going to be an asshole. Throw the cookies on the ground or belittle Lily and I. But he wasâŠsurprisingly friendly. Even took a few minutes to talk to Lily and thank her for them. I practically had to drag her away before she could volunteer us to bake him cinnamon rolls next.â
Allisonâs smile grew even wider, a mischievous glint in her eye. âSounds like someone is doing a little matchmaking,â she teased, shooting you a wink.
You rolled your eyes, glancing back down at your laptop. âShe's four, Ally,â you pointed out. âShe was just being friendly. Besides, he's my neighbor.â
âWhich makes it even easier for him to pop over for late night booty calls,â she stated matter-of-factly.
Your eyes flew up over the screen of your laptop, landing on Ally as they widened. She laughed at the look on your face, rising up from her chair as the door to the shop opened once again.Â
âThat's bordering on very inappropriate work talk,â you quickly scolded her. âAnd that's the end of this topic of conversation, I think.â
âUh huh,â she replied, a knowing smile on her lips as she made her way back towards the register. âSure it is, boss.â
The moment the panicked cries met your ears, your eyes flew open and consciousness quickly returned to you. Pushing yourself up in your bed, you frantically began throwing the sheets off of yourself when you heard Lilyâs distressed voice calling out for you in between the loud sobs that were coming from down the hall. It didnât take Penny long to climb out of her dog bed at the noise, bolting out of the room before youâd barely managed to stand upright.
âIâm coming, Lily!â you called out to her.
Fighting back the fog of sleep youâd just abruptly woken from, you made your way out of your bedroom and crossed the few steps down the hall towards the room youâd long since turned into Lilyâs for the nightâs Jaime worked at the bar. Stepping into the room, you spotted her sitting up in her bed and clutching her stuffed husky version of Penny to her chest. The nightlight across the room cast her in a soft, pink glow as the real Penny sat beside her bed, her head resting along the mattress.
âHey,â you greeted her softly, making your way over towards the edge of the bed to sit. âWhatâs wrong? Did you have a bad dream?â
Lily nodded her head quickly as soft sobs continued to fall from her lips. You could see the damp tear streaks on her cheeks in the dim light, the sight twisting your heart in your chest. You hated ever seeing anything but a smile on her face. Opening your arms to her in offer of comfort, she immediately lunged forward across the bed and wrapped her small arms around you in a hug. You held her tight in return, rocking her gently against you.
âIâm sorry, coffee bean,â you whispered. âIt was only a dream though. It wasnât real and it canât hurt you. And you've got Penny and I here with you.â
âI donât want to sleep,â she whispered back, her little voice cracking from where her face was buried against your shoulder. âDonât make me sleep, Nini, please?â
You sighed, eyelids slowly lowering as you continued to hold her against you. It mustâve been a real bad dream if she was saying that tonight. Often you wondered what her bad dreams were about when she had them, though youâd never pushed for an answer. Though by now you knew there was only one guaranteed way to get the bad dream out of her mind so sheâd go back to sleep tonight and not keep you both awake all night long. You found yourself grateful that it wasnât winter anymore.
âDo you want to go sit outside for a minute?â you asked her. âLook at the stars and calm down?â
She nodded her head against your shoulder, sniffling slightly. One of your hands lightly patted her back.
âAlright, letâs go grab our coats and shoes,â you said.Â
Reluctantly she released you, though one of her little hands quickly found yours while the other still gripped her stuffed husky. Both of you slid off of the bed and made your way out of the room and down the short hallway towards the stairs. Penny dutifully followed along after the pair of you.
There was a few minutes of silence as you and Lily slipped your shoes and coats on in the front entryway of the living room before you both made your way through the kitchen and over towards the sliding glass door that led to the backyard. As you unlocked the door, your gaze landed over on Penny who was now wagging her tail behind you, excited about the prospect of going outside.Â
âUh uh,â you told her, shaking your head. âYou slipped your collar a couple of nights ago and I donât feel like chasing after you around the whole neighborhood at two in the morning. So youâre staying inside.â
Penny grumbled back at you, swinging her head around in a circle in her husky equivalent of an eye roll. You figured she was probably upset at hearing the word âstayâ mixed into what youâd said. But you shook your head again at her, too tired to even want to think about her slipping her collar and sneaking her way out of the old and worn wooden fence that surrounded the yard right now.Â
âAll your own doing, girl,â you told her. âDonât like it? Stop sneaking out of the yard and making me chase after you. Until then, you stay put.â
With another irritated and prolonged grumble, Penny slowly lowered herself down onto the kitchen floor. Lily giggled lightly at your stubborn dog as you focused back on the door, pulling it open and stepping outside with her hand once more holding onto yours. Though as you both stepped out onto the patio, you quickly noticed you werenât alone in the backyard.Â
On the small neighboring patio next to yours, you spotted Frank sitting in one of the patio chairs with his legs kicked out before him, his solemn gaze fixed up above on the night sky, one of his hands absently running across his mouth. But he quickly snapped out of his thoughts seconds later when he registered the sound of your back door having slid open. His head turned over his shoulder towards the pair of you where youâd stopped frozen in your tracks.
âSorry,â you apologized quickly, uncertain of what else to say. âI didnât see you out here, we didnât mean to bother you.â
Frankâs eyes dropped down onto Lily beside you, her hand still holding tight to yours while the other clutched her stuffed husky to her chest. You noticed the way his gaze softened instantly when heâd focused on her, probably noticing her red puffy eyes from having just been crying.Â
ââSâalright,â he replied, his gaze sliding back up to you. âNot just my backyard.â
Drawing his feet in towards himself, he began to rise out of his chair. You winced, feeling bad for practically kicking him out of the space heâd been in first. But heâd barely risen to his feet before the sound of Lilyâs voice stopped him.
âI had a bad dream,â she said softly. âDo you get bad dreams, Frank?â
Frank froze halfway out of his chair, a muscle twitching in his cheek as the moonlight above illuminated his face. Your brows knitted faintly together as you watched his entire body tense at her question. Gradually his attention fixed back onto your niece, his eyes a confusing mix of emotions that your tired brain couldnât quite read.
âYeah,â he answered. âI do.â
Something about the heavy tone in which heâd answered her had caught your attention. His words felt like a loaded answer, one with more meaning behind it that you found yourself curious about. What sort of bad dreams did he have? Were they the reason for the often gruff exterior he seemed to exude? Was it anything to do with why he was here by himself?
Though of course, you werenât remotely about to ask him a single one of those questions.
Lily dropped your hand, her arms both holding the stuffed dog to her chest in a hug as she crossed the small distance over to Frank's patio. You frowned, shoulders sagging at her once more being the four year old she was who couldn't help inserting herself somewhere she shouldn't be.
âLily, please don'tââ
âWhat makes you feel better after a bad dream?â Lily asked Frank, cutting you off as if you hadn't even begun to reprimand her. âI go outside with Nini. The stars are pretty to look at.â
You shot Frank an apologetic smile before focusing back on your niece. Taking a step forward, you reached a hand out in an attempt to direct her back into your side of the yard. âLily,â you began again, âyou can't just go barging into his yard and asking him personal questions. That's not polite, coffee bean. Especially not at two in the morning.â
Frank glanced up at you, shaking his head lightly. âIt's alright,â he assured you. âSheâs not bothering me. The opposite, actually.âÂ
Taken aback by his response, once again considering the hour and your nieceâs intrusive question, you were surprised to see Frank settle back down into his chair. There was a small smile on his face as he rested his fidgeting hands in his lap, his attention returning to your niece as Lily continued over onto his patio, climbing up onto the patio chair beside his as if it was the most natural thing in the world for her to do. Standing with the toes of your shoes in the grass just before his patio and at the edge of your yard, you werenât even sure how to react at this point.
âI like to look at the stars sometimes, too,â he told Lily. âSometimes theyâre calming for me. Other times I might read a book.â
Lily smiled, her little legs not quite reaching the ground from where she sat in the chair absently petting her stuffed dog. âI like when Nini reads me books. She does good voices,â she told him.
Frankâs attention briefly shifted over to where you were standing, something still indecipherable written on his face. Despite the slight chill of the spring night, you felt something warm creep up your neck and flood your cheeks. Nervously you wrapped your arms over your chest, the weight of his gaze once more drawing forth some confusing feelings inside of you.
âDoes she now?â Frank mused.
âMhmm,â Lily replied, beginning to swing her legs back and forth. âI like when she reads the monkey book.â
Frankâs mouth twisted into a sad smile, his gaze dropping down towards his booted feet that had begun toeing the pavement beneath them. Your brows pulled together a bit, a crease forming between them as you noted the slight shift in his mood. He was quiet for a moment before you heard him speak again.
âUsed to read One Batch, Two Batch to my daughter every night,â he murmured. âWas her favorite book. Sometimes thatâs what she wanted me to read when she had bad dreams.â
âNini reads that book to me all the time!â Lily exclaimed, excitedly sitting forward in her chair. âThatâs where Penny got her name!â
âIs it now?â Frank asked, glancing up at her.Â
Even from his profile you could tell the look on Frankâs face hinted at something more hidden behind what heâd said. His use of past tense hadnât gone unnoticed even to your tired ears, either. You could practically feel a sadness exuding from him where he sat in the chair, chuckling softly as Lily bounced up and down in her seat telling him about how sheâd helped you name your husky when youâd adopted her not too long ago. But as she continued to enthusiastically tell the story, you could tell that sadness never seemed to fade from his expression.
âHey, Lil?â you said, cutting in when you found an opportunity.Â
She paused in the middle of her storytelling, the pair of them focusing on you where you still stood at the edge of your yard. You knew if you didnât stop her now, sheâd probably sit there talking to Frank until the sun came up, and while it oddly looked as if he almost wouldnât mind that, you definitely felt it was time to usher her back inside to bed before sheâd be too awake to fall back asleep with how excited she'd already become.
âMaybe we should tell Frank goodnight and head back inside?â you suggested. âItâs late and Iâm sure he needs to get to sleep at some point, too. Besides, Iâm dropping you off at your dadâs in the morning and I think youâll want to be rested to spend the day with him, right?â
The excitement quickly fell from Lilyâs face and you fought the ache in your chest at the sight. It had been great seeing her happy after how youâd just found her in her room, but you really did need to get some sleep and so did she. If she continued on talking to Frank like this you knew she'd be wide awake talking for the next hour.
âHow about I let you bring Pennyâs bed into your room for the rest of the night, hmm?â you offered. âLet her sleep in there with you, too?â
The smile immediately returned to her face as she scooted off the patio chair. âReally?â she asked, hopping up and down on her feet. âShe can stay with me tonight?â
You nodded, barely getting an affirmative out before Lily was darting past you back towards your sliding door and calling âgoodnightâ out loudly to Frank as she went. She was back inside your place and darting presumably up to your room to get the dog bed with Penny bounding along behind her in no time.Â
Frankâs soft chuckle drew your attention back towards him. Your arms were still hugging your chest as you sent him yet another apologetic smile.
âSorry for interrupting your evening,â you told him, gesturing your head towards the direction Lily had disappeared. âSheâs not very shy, as Iâm sure youâve noticed. Doesnât quite understand when she's being rude instead of friendly.â
Frankâs hand ran across his mouth as he shook his head, a glimmer of something in his eyes as he looked up at you. Your stomach fluttered nervously at the realization of just how alone you currently were with him.
âSeems like a real good kid,â he told you.Â
âYeah,â you said, smiling fondly. âShe is.â Clearing your throat, you took a step backwards, aware that you needed to get back inside. âSorry for bothering you, though. Iâll uh, leave you to it.â
Turning around, you made your way back towards your side of the duplex. Once again youâd found that Frank had surprised you with how sweet he was with your niece, though learning he had a daughter certainly seemed to explain that away. You wondered if he and his wife had recently separated or divorced and that was why he was out here looking so melancholic.
Just as your hand grabbed onto the handle of your sliding door, pulling it open, you heard Frankâs voice from behind you. You paused there on the patio at the sound of it.
âYouâre good with her,â he called out.
Biting back the smile on your face, you glanced back over your shoulder at him.
âCould say the same about you,â you called back.
He let out an amused huff, ducking his head almost bashfully at your compliment. That smile was further threatening to take over your face as you heard Lily loudly talking to Penny upstairs inside your duplex.
âGoodnight, Frank.â
He looked up at you from beneath his lashes, his head still partially ducked down. There was a ghost of a smile on his face as he nodded back at you once.
âGânight,â he replied.
Stepping back into your place, you found yourself smiling to yourself as you shut and locked the sliding door behind you. As you began to slip off your coat and shoes in the kitchen, you wondered if maybe having him as a neighbor wouldnât be half as bad as youâd first thought.

A/n: i like this how this chapter ended up lol, ill try my best to post the next part sooner my loves mwah đ
anyways, enjoyyyy!!
âąâđââą
She could feel his eyes on the back of her neck as she discarded her blanket on the cot in the middle of the tent, trying to prolong the reprieve before she inevitably had to address the other presence in the tent.
Y/n was going to kill someone, hopefully Herb.
Rolling her neck, she walked towards the small table that sat a few feet away from the bed and bent to pick all the remaining weapons that sat on the table.
"Are you trying to ignore me?" Cardan questioned, his tone so genuinely confused that Y/n felt bad for trying to avoid him, but she could no say she regretted it.
After all, she was just trying to protect herself.
"What makes you think that?" She mumbled, her focus fixed on the weapons she strapped to herself.
She could hear him moving around, shuffling. From how close she'd been to him, she knew he was under pressure and was starting to get protective.
"You have been gone for months now, and you didn't even smile at me when you saw me and now you are not talking to me at all-"
"I've just been stressed, Cardan." Finally, after she finished checking her body to make sure she had all her weapons, she turned to find him frowning at her.
She wanted to smile at him, but she didn't have energy to even blink.
"I'm sorry, but I have to leave. It might be night time when I return, so don't wait up."
His frown deepened, and he opened his mouth to speak, but Y/n swiftly turned on her heel and made her exit, not bothering to even pretend she really was getting late.
She was just too tired now, and all she wanted to do was run away, live in a mountain home and maybe terrorize children by pretending to be a witch, but alas, that was not possible.
Yet.
âąâđââą
The late afternoon sun was glaring down at Y/n and Herb, and despite the snow still blanketing the ground, the weather was hot. Too hot to be comfortable in an armor.
The thick silence was also not helping as Y/n and Herb made their way to the bar in the middle of town, having just finished the job they had come to get done.
That meant they could've returned to the camp, but Y/n had insisted on getting something to drink, not yet ready to face Cardan again after the shit show that had been her morning.
Y/n could tell Herb had questions he wanted to ask, but he knew that opening his mouth would probably end up with her scolding him, so he kept quiet as he stalked along next to her.
Y/n tried to relax as the bar came into view, rolling her shoulders.
It only got her more tensed up.
The bell jingled behind the pair as they walked in, a soft breeze cooling the back of Y/n's neck as the door swung shut behind her.
The car- tavern, really- was mostly empty, an hour or two left before it started filling with patrons wishing to wind down from their day's work.
A couple sat in a corner, leaning close together as they giggled and chugged their drinks, and Y/n eyed them before turning and following Herb to a table near the far wall.
As she settled down, she eyed the male standing right in front of the counter, laughing at something the owner said. Y/n's eyes narrowed as she realised it was not any male. It was one of her soldiers.
What is he doing here?
Sure, the soldiers were free to roam and explore the towns the group visited when not on duty, but they never came to taverns in the middle of the day, lest they have to fight later. It was only when they were certain that nothing would happen or if they got permission from Y/n that they would visit these places.
Blinking, Y/n turned to find Herb studying her, his arms folded on the table as he leaned forward.
"What?"
His eyes did not waver at her sharp tone. "I'm sorry."
Y/n grunted. "It's okay."
Y/n did not like the way he stared at her, his eyes seeming to read her like an open book. "Is it really?"
Y/n rose a brow. "What is that supposed to mean?"
He shook his head, his eyes so serious Y/n was concerned for a moment. "Nothing."
"It does not sound like nothing."
He sighed. "Look, I know there's something going on with you. I've known you for years now and you were never the one to just up and leave for a mission. You always took up missions that at the very least gave you the time of a week before leaving. So there's definitely something you're hiding."
Y/n straightened, looking away.
Herb was not the type of person to be serious. In the twenty years she had known him, since that first day when she had walked into class and befriended Cardan, and sat next to Herb, the male had never spoken a word if it was not meant to make someone laugh.
He was like that, Herb. He cared for people around him, and because he never seemed sad or serious, y/n had just assumed he was a little dumb.
She realised now how foolish it was.
"What are you trying to say Herb?"
"Just that I figured it has something to do with the High king, and if you ever need someone to talk to, I'll be there."
There was something indecipherable in his eyes as he spoke, the way he refused to break eye contact and the way he spoke so confidently, no traces of humour to be found in his soft, deep voice that sent chills down Y/n's back.
Y/n gave a curt nod, turning her eyes to stare a hole into the cheap wood of the table they had settled at.
Y/n could tell Herb still studied her, and it was another moment of heavy silence before he spoke up, his normal self back.
"So, have you heard of the toad that ate the horse?"
âąâđââą
Y/n knew her suspicions were right when she stumbled into a raging revel in the camp after a day of wasting her time, everyone gathered around the huge fire in the middle, singing bawdy songs as Cardan looked over them like a pleased cat.
She had not wanted to return to the camp after her visiting the tavern, so she had told Herb to go by himself. He, of course, had decided to stay with her and laze about the small town.
"What is going on here?"
Cardan's eyes flew to where Y/n stood, glaring at them all as Herb stood at her back.
Cardan grinned, the smile Y/n had been in love with.
"We are celebrating!" One of the soldiers- clearly drunk- called out, giggling.
Y/n glared at him, then at Cardan.
His smile faltered, then slowly fell off when Y/n did not smile back.
Y/n stared at him a moment longer, letting him know that she was not pleased, then turned, heading into her tent.
She was so over today.
Tired, sleep claimed her the moment her head hit the hard mattress, and she slept deeper than she ever had, nothing able to wake her.
Not the sound of the night birds, not the sound of the soldiers screaming their hearts out outside, not the loud crash when one of them fell into her tent as he tried to navigate his way to his tent.
Nothing woke her up, except for the sudden hand that covered her mouth in the dark of the middle of the night.

Hi Blue! How are you? Could you write what would be like jealous sex with neteyam, jealousy on his part with his partner, like headcanons, something more fluffy than aggressive, I don't think Neteyam would ever be violent with someone he loves, I would love that, please

Neteyam wasnât one to easily get jealous but when he did, he had many ways of showing it he was quick to show others and remind you that you belonged to him
He never lets it get to far-
When he saw you getting too close to another man for his liking Heâd get one of his siblings to come and interrupt you. Sometimes it was Kiri asking you for help gathering herbs for Moâat. Most of the time it was Tuk asking you to play or do her hair and it worked every time he knew you had a soft spot for his youngest sister. the best part is he never appears jealous because it âs not his fault his sisters just love you that much.
Heâll love bom you the moment your alone -
Heâll focus all of his attention on you the moment youâre alone together after one of these incidents. The moment youâre in your hut heâll close the flap and immediately kissing along your neck. Kissing your throat dragging his hands along your sides.sneaking his hands under your top rubbing you tits squeezing them. You moan out his name â teyam! âŠwhatâs gotten into you ma Teyam â you asked him.
Heâll leave you full of marks where others can see-
He ignores you, picking you up and taking you to your guy's bed. He immediately start undressing you. Starting from top to bottom kissing along your body leaving bit marks along your neck and slowly moving down to your thighs all over the places your loincloth doesnât cover.
He likes to remind you who you belong to-
After marking you he likes to remind you who you belong to. He pushes you onto the bed kneeling between your parted legs wasting no time and pushing his fingers into you . Dragging another moan from you . Heâll continue until heâs made you come at least once from his fingers alone. And thatâs only the start neither of you get much sleep that night. You breathe heavily this was the 4th time you came and Neteyam didnât seem to be done with you just yet.â Nete i canât no more â you pant out. He smirked â no ? â he asked you starting to pump himself into you again â you canât give your mighty warrior just one more â he kisses your neck and moves down to your chest sucking your nipple. He picks up his speed, your legs shake . Itâs not long before your coming again. â who do you belong to syulang â Neteyam asks you. You feel you stomach knotting again you cry out his name â Neteyam â well coming again. He smiled pressing against you , giving you a kiss thrusting deeply one last time finishing inside you. â thatâs right syulang you belong to me â he whispered in you ear pulling away from you. He reaches over grabbing a cloth cleaning both of you. before letting you rest pulling you closer to him cuddling you close to him.
Lingering stares and sensual touches when they are in a group-
this continues for the next few days him pulling you aside anytime he sees you giving you short sweet kisses. Wrapping his arm around you well around others whether itâs his family or your friends. Heâll find himself watching you more during training or when he sees you around, like at the very moment you were helping his mother cook dinner in the Suli family hut he was meant to be helping make arrow heads but was distracted by you. He felt a hand on his head forcing him to look back at his task, he looked up to see his father giving him a look. He quickly turned around and went back to work.
Later that night well you hung out with his siblings and Spider around a late night fire. he took the chance and moved you into his lap kissing you on the cheek. Making you blush, he looked at you smirking. Loâak throw a cup at his brother â bro! Get a room!â Neteyam looked over at him unimpressed â you know what little brother youâre right see you losers later â he didnât give you a chance to react picking you up and walking off towards your hut

please something with Sammy and will after tonightâs (Chicagoâs) game! he looked way too good
ok i know umich women's soccer isn't doing the best this season and they lost their game last night, but let's just pretend for this tehehe. will looked fine affff in that intermission interview phew
au masterlist
samyâs phone buzzed in her hand while she helped hannah unlock their apartment door and shuffled in with their stuff. the brunette smiled seeing her boyfriendâs name flash across the screen knowing they probably just finished the game an hour ago.
âdamn, is he ever not on time with those calls?â hannah teased when she saw her friendâs phone making the two giggle.
âheâs very consistent with calling every night,â samy hummed, dropping her bags by the counter for now so she could answer willâs call.
his face appeared a moment later, curls damp and face flushed probably from the shower. hannah quickly waved when samy propped her phone up on the counter, âhey will! about to go watch the highlights!â the duke sibling exclaimed before disappearing from the frame.
will chuckled. âhey hannah. hey,â he directed his focus back to samy, expression worn from the long day and the even longer night ahead as they headed to canada for tomorrow nightâs game.
âhi, i havenât watched the highlights yet. we just got back from my game as soon as you called,â samy smiled a bit, but it faded when she saw the blondeâs faded expression.
âugh, you donât have to even bother. we lost 4-2,â will rolled his eyes a bit, the defeat clear in his system still. so far, the season hadnât really been off to a great start yet.
âaw, iâm sorry. how long were you on for?â
âi was on every period, but i dunno. bedard is fucking scary sometimes on the ice,â will huffed making samy giggle.
"yeah, you're right with that one. i mean at least you tried your best that's all that matters. i'm sure it will pick up. you're still getting used to it and everything. plus, these guys way faster and way different from college hockey," she offered her best advice to hopefully lift the hockey player's spirits. will did manage a smile.
"i know, i know. still hurts sometimes though. i can count how many games we've won on one hand," he held up his fingers.
"it will look up, i promise. i'm still proud of you, and i did catch your first intermission interview. you should see the comments under that video," the girl giggled referring to the all the other girls fan-girling over her boyfriend because of how good he looked between periods.
will's cheeks flushed in embarrassment, shaking his head a bit, "so are you saying you agree with them?"
"i mean, you did look pretty good. they have a point," samy grinned making her boyfriend deeply blush.
"i'll remember that then. too bad you aren't here to see it all in person," he teased back which had samy blushing as well.
if anything, samy was always right along with those girls making edits and thirsting over her boyfriend. she loved seeing the edits come in her for you page and more times than not, she was sending them to will so he could see himself.
"maybe next time when i don't have a game keeping me here."
"you guys won right?" will wondered and the brunette eagerly nodded. "i caught some of it during intermission. 7-1's pretty good."
"i know. we're super excited about the season. coach definitely thinks we're winning it all," samy chuckled.
"i mean, with you there it's pretty much in the bag," the boy's words brought another blush to her cheeks.
"you're just saying that," she rolled her eyes, but will just shrugged.
"i've already bought my tickets for the finals," the couple shared a smile with one another.
"bold move, but i appreciate it."
"hey will, we're packing up soon," a new voice entered the call and samy quickly recognized it as macklin.
the younger brunette stuck his head into the frame, waving. "hi samy."
"hi mack. i'll let you guys go. have a safe flight, text me when you land," samy blew a kiss to will through the screen.
"i will. i love you," he did the same back, ignoring macklin's snickering.
"i love you, too! bye mack," she waved to them before ending the call, excited to finally get into the shower to get all the dirt and sweat off her body.
"is this how gabe felt last year when you were always calling samy?" macklin teased while will threw his phone onto the bed to get the rest of his things together.
"oh shut up," he shoved the boy, sharing a laugh. "when you get a girlfriend, i'm not gonna leave you alone either."

Transgender Deathmatch Legend has a few solid facts about your player character (your Face). You're explicitly trans, you're explicitly a wrestler and implicitly you exist in a world that is hostile to you.
Character creation in the original TDL focused on key pick lists to fill in some of your backstory and then pulling cards to create a finisher. Character creation for the sequel builds on that while also adding questions that are intended to guide players towards creating more well rounded, full textured characters.
The ring names you can pick from got an overhaul (basically to keep things fresh for long term fans). The intention of those names is if you grab one from the picklist it's evocative enough you can start to build a whole character around that. If you decide to not pick one and just make your own hopefully the picklist has served as some inspiration. Here's four of the picklists names I think are particurlaly good:
Tiger Masc
âHot Rodâ Trinity
âFlamingâ Blu Heatly
âThe Consequenceâ Shelly TheodoreÂ
Dominator 1
The two big picklists then focus on your shoot background and the gimmick you have. Similarly to how you pick a ring name and a gimmick name the character creation in Transgender Deathmatch Legend is reminding you that you are someone who puts on a persona. That persona might be a lot like you, or it might be an escape from parts of yourself. I think this an element where the game reminds you of that a lot and then assumes that someone used to roleplaying games should find something interesting in there.
(There's more explanation on how gimmicks are thought off and an outright blunt question of "how much of your real self is in this gimmick?" in TDL2 to help out people less used to thinking about performance and personas. It's a theme that compels me as someone who's been a wrestler, a comedian, and a teacher; areas where to different extents you're putting on a mask.)
Here's some of the shoot backgrounds:
Started learning the ropes after experiencing a hate crime
Introed to wrestling through an ex-best friend
Wrestling legacy blacksheep
And here's some gimmick starting points:
Flamboyant showboat who frustrates and flusters your opponents
An old-school throwback with a loud personality
A serious shooter with black trunks and black boots and a mean look
A tortured anti-hero who mines pain for pathosÂ
An in-your-face punk with skills honed in bar room brawls
(These are broad because you can match them up with the implications of the shoot name you've picked or created and that combination brings a gimmick to life)
More open questions in the game include stuff like "Describe your gender, both in the terms you use to yourself and to society." and "Did you realise you were trans before you became a wrestler?" as well as the aeformentioned real self/gimmick question. There's also a picklist for "what people say about you" which is obviously a very different question than what you're actually like. These questions are there to get players thinking about how their characters marginalisation affects how they interact with the world around them.
The drawing cards for a finisher mechanic is back, though expanded this time so there's a unique table for each different fighting style.
At the top of this page you can see that one of the scenarios (Fight Forever) involves doing a mirror image character creation for your rival, before playing out a series of fights through time that defined your relationship. I think the most interesting question there is the open one "Are you trans as well?". Like, this scenario specifically is about fighting/sport as a relationship. I think that question has a lot of repercussions about what that relationship is build on; is it something you have in common and connected over, where you placed together as the only two trans people in a way that feels semi patronising, or is there a tension in that one of you just has significantly more opportunities in the world than their creative partners.
So yeah, that's an overview of character creation. I'll probably do a layout sample of what it'll look like in the book proper sometime. The games launches on the 29th and things have been slower than I'd have liked (I worry that the games content has meant it hasn't been favoured by the algorithms of the world). If you're excited about the game giving the teaser page a pre-save would go a long way to ensuring the launch is successful. There's big exciting things coming for this as a campaign, but to get to any of that I need to hit that initial goal. I'm not down for the count yet.

Chapter 5: Deal Previous Chapter || Next Chapter
Tw: None (I think!)
Info: Vil and Reader; Riddle Rosehearts x Reader; Leona Kingscholar x Reader
Word Count: 7.4k Words
đUnfortunatelyyyyyyyy this chapter had to be split into two! It was getting too long and I knew I had to cut it in half. The second part WILL be shorter I promise! Anyway, this one was a lot of fun to write, and we're starting to get into the meat of everything here! Hope you all enjoy <3
Taglist: @kitsun369 @bloomstruck @squidsailing @roseinbloom02 @savanaclaw1996 (Lmk if you want to be added)
âThis may be the worst thing Iâve ever wornâŠâ you grumble, glaring at the too-fluffy purple fabric of your skirt. The sleeves were a poofy nightmare, flaring out from the top with slits down the center for better arm movement, and to show off your pretty silk gloves. The corset wrapped around your waist did you no favors, only restricting your movements and making it harder to breathe. The only thing the dress did not cover was your chest, draped in the finest jewels your handmaids could find. It likely didnât help that you had an extra layer of hunting clothes beneath the whole ensemble.
âItâs not that badâŠâ Deuce tries to soothe, smoothing over the skirt.
It was a very pretty dress but⊠You felt a bit ridiculous in the wretched thing. Ballgowns were never your favorite, while your brother adored them more than anything. He could pull them off though, looking like a goddess and floating across the floor like a ghost. You⊠you looked like⊠wellâŠ
âYou look like a purple cream puff,â Ace says, better than anyone else could.
âI know,â you whine, âI begged for something more⊠modest, but appearances and such.â
âYou look pretty,â Deuce tries again, and you focus your glare in the mirror on him, which makes him shrink back a bit.
âYou do look nice,â Ace jumps in, âjust notâŠâ
âYourself,â Deuce finishes for him, smile awkward and nervous as always.
You sigh, fiddling with the pretty silken gloves. You did not like silk gloves, you always struggled to grab silverware with them on, but they were pretty. They made you feel pretty, despite your favor for leather hunters gloves.Â
âHey, look on the bright side,â Ace slings his arm around your shoulder, waving his hand through the air and looking off into the distance. You follow his gaze, though you know you both looked incredibly stupid, âthat hunter guy is gonna lose his mind when he sees you all dressed up.â
You roll your eyes. You told Ace and Deuce about your interesting beau shortly after he had left your room, and the two of them had not allowed you to live it down since. You fix your glare up at Ace now, arms crossing petulantly over your chest. While the idea of Rook enjoying your outfit made butterfly wings tickle your stomach, you did not like being teased about it. In retaliation, you poke him hard in his ribs. He whines and gives you space to breathe.
âDonât make me think about him,â you sigh, âitâll make this dinner all the more dreadful.â
âAt least youâre sitting near Riddle?â Deuce asks hopefully, an encouraging smile gracing his features. You find his smile to be quite knightly, and the nervous part of your brain is assured by it. If only a little.
âAt least I have that,â you laugh lightly, giving yourself one last look over in the mirror before the door to your room cracked open, familiar blue eyes sparkling at you.
âItâs time to make your appearance, Your Majesty,â Epel said playfully, practically jittering in excitement.
You let out a noise between a squeak of surprise and an exclamation of joy, then throw yourself into his arms. He spins you around a few times, laughing, then plants you on the ground and straightens any fabric or hair that mightâve fallen out of place. Seeing Epel was quite the pick me up, especially since you hadnât seen him since those few nights ago.
âYou are my escort?â You exclaim, unable to stay still as you bounce up and down happily.
âThe Queen specifically requested I be the one to escort you,â he confirms, smiling bright as the sun, âthough⊠Iâm unsure why he changed his tune about everything that happened.â
âThatâs not something to worry about,â you dismiss, though you are confident your little⊠argument with your brother was the most likely cause, âIâm just happy to see you again.â
His smile softens into something more gentle, intimate, and knowing. You missed the kind way he looked at you. Like you were his family and he yours. Before you both can get too lost in catching up a throat clears behind you. Ah, yes. Ace and Deuce were here.
âWhoâs this?â Ace asks chest puffed out. Was he⊠sizing Epel up? The idea is so funny that you laugh a little without meaning to.
âAh, Ace and Deuce, this is my best friend since childhood, Epel,â You turn to Epel, who also seems to be sizing the two men up, âEpel, these are my temporary guards and dearest companions from the Rosedom, Ace and Deuce.â
âYouâve been taking good care of them?â Epel asks sharply.
âGreat care,â Ace retorts, just as sharp.
âThe best, even,â Deuce remarks as well.
Before the three of them can get into a verbal game of proving who you do or do not like more, you wave your hands in the air and insist that you must not be late for dinner. Your brotherâs wrath would be unpleasant to face, especially after having made a big deal of promising to be on time. So, reluctantly, the three men back down and guide you carefully through the busy halls bustling with castle staff ensuring everything was perfect for the day.
When you finally reach the (frankly, too) large doors of the dining room, Epel stops you. Introductions, of course, you are sure all the suitors (actually just your brother, and maybe Kalim) are waiting with bated breath to see you. Hah, the thought is funny. No one really wants to be here, and you know that for a fact.
Epel announces your arrival, the doors open, and you put a pleasant smile on your face. Perform perfectly, and itâll all be over in no time, you remind yourself. Your brother stands at the end of the table, though he does not make direct eye contact with you the whole time you are walking to your seat. You are to be positioned opposite of him, and as promised, Riddle is standing in the spot next to you. Unfortunately for you, Leona is positioned on the other side of you, and you try not to frown when you realize this.
Next to Leona is, surprisingly, Azul Ashengrotto, who you did not expect to see tonight. He was not exactly someone you imagine your brother being willing to negotiate with, especially not when you are in question⊠but you have been learning quite a bit about your brother you suppose. Kalim sat next to Riddle, giving you a little wave when you made eye contact. You do not grin, though you wish to do so. Kalim was such a sweetheart, especially to you, even before any marriage was in question.
Idia, whom you had forgotten was even an option for you, was sitting on your brother's left next to Kalim. He looked as though he might burst out crying when you looked at him, so you swiftly moved your eyes to the final suitor. Malleus Draconia, as elegant and handsome as always, which causes a nagging part of your brain to roll its eyes (though you do not). He gives you a confident smile, and you have to resist the urge to vomit. His ever-scary retainer was standing near the edge of the room by the guards after all, you did not want to feel his gaze on you ever again after that one night.
When you position yourself in front of your seat, you finally lock eyes with your brother. He is beautiful as always, as expected. There is a lingering sadness in his face, a stress that you had not seen since your parents had passed. You hate the way satisfaction grows in your belly at the thought that you had caused it. Resentment was an ugly beast.
Vil clears his throat, and a kind, gentle, fake smile comes across his lips. âWelcome all to dinner, we are delighted to have your company on this fine evening. More than that, I am pleased that all of you are interested in trying for my dearly beloved siblings' hand in marriage. This dinner, so to speak, will mark the beginning of the ahem competition for her affections. Do try your best.â
The air around you becomes tense at his words, even though your brother continues to speak, and you donât believe itâs solely because of your distaste for the idea. There is a real drive in (some of) these men to prove themselves to you. They all have stakes in this âfriendlyâ competition for your hand â well, more like their kingdoms do. While each of them has little personal gain, their people would greatly benefit from a marriage between their kingdom and the most powerful human royal line in the current times.
You are a prize to be won, as much as you do not want to be, and it makes your stomach turn. You are so discomforted with the feeling, that you spend the rest of your brothers pleasantries ignoring his words and trying to calm yourself. You only tune back in when everyone sits and food is brought out.
You fiddle with your silken gloves, nerves shot. You hated feeling like prey. You were not a deer in the forest, you were the hunter. So why did you feel like you were stripped of that pride? Why did you feel the burn of seven eyes on you? Lost in your mind, you nearly spiral, until a gentle tap comes from your right side, and an awkward smile from the prettiest cupid bowed lips your eyes had ever seen pulls you from your stresses. Riddleâs gray eyes are strangely⊠understanding as he quietly asks âAre you okay?â You nod, and he relaxes just a bit.
Some of your suitors have already begun to engage each other in conversation, and you realize you mustâve been quiet and unmoving for a significant amount of time. Your face heats at the idea. You do not feel yourself right now, thank goodness for Riddleâs uncharacteristic kindness.
He seems to notice, again, that you are floundering and decides to converse with you. You think he may be an angel sent by the seven to save you from your idiocy.
âTrey gave me those tarts you made last week,â he begins, âthey were delightful. Raspberry is surprisingly delicious.â
You are pleasantly surprised to find that Riddle was the recipient of your leftover treats. He didnât strike you as the sweet kind, but perhaps that was because you only knew him to be sour. Was Trey trying to get you some bonus points with him? Or maybe it was him with you. Regardless of Treyâs intentions, both you and Riddle benefited.
âYes, my mother's recipe,â you speak in hushed tones, not wanting to draw attention, âI didnât know you liked sweets.â
He frowns a little, biting his bottom lip and furrowing his brows. You briefly imagine a child caught with their hand in the cookie jar and smile a little, which seems to ease his mind a bit as his face relaxes.
âIâm not⊠supposed to eat sweets like that,â he admits finally, âtheyâre too fattening and not good for the health.â
You shake your head at him, scoffing, âA little treat once in a while is a good thing. Anyway, I am glad you ate them. I didnât want all of our hard work to be wasted.â
His pretty pink lips curled up into a smile, which makes butterflies flutter around in your rib cage. Riddle is handsome, which you knew from your encounters beforehand, but you hadnât taken the time to study why that was before. His face was slender, cheeks still soft with not yet lost baby fat. His skin was pale from how much time he spent indoors being pampered by his maids and serfs, and his cheeks flushed a pretty rosy red â you believed it was natural, which only made him more handsome in your opinion.Â
Despite the soft, childlike look he had, his features were sharp and trained like a true ruler. Steel blue eyes pierced into every aspect of your being, framed by soft, long eyelashes. And, of course, those damned pink lips. The dip of his cupid's bow gave them a heart-shaped look, which only added to how pretty he was. Sevens, you were jealous of just how effortlessly beautiful your â tentative â friend was.
âIâm inclined to agree with you after eating those tarts,â he laughs, ending your ogling.
You give him a pleasant smile and move to eat your meal. You were the only person in the room that had hardly touched the food, which was delicious, and so entirely unlike yourself. You made up for that in record time, still managing to look and act like you were royalty while you did so. (After seeing Ace and Deuce eat earlier this week, you were very conscious of how you looked while you ate).
You noticed the, in lack of better terms, impressed face Riddle makes when he finally looks back at your plate and half of it is gone. He does not say anything though, and you are grateful for it because explaining how much you like food to someone as slim and pretty as him fills you with hot shame just thinking about it. You give him a gracious smile, lightly patting your lips to be rid of any food that mightâve escaped you.
âYou eat like a monster,â comes a grating, gravely deep voice next to you.
Riddle scoffs, a glare hardening his soft, boyish features. You lift a hand before he can defend your honor. Your eyes slide over to Leona, annoyance already clear on your face. You do not feel the need to hide your dislike for him like you might with the others. Leona sure doesnât hide his. Still, you canât just be cruel the way you want to.
âIf I am a monster for enjoying the food my staff slaved so tirelessly over, then let the kingdomâs best hunters come and take my head as a prize,â you reply.
He grins. A slow, lazy one that is more attractive than you want to give him credit for, and holds his hands up in defense. âIâm just letting you know. Not very attractive â oh, and you have something in your teeth.â
Your face heats up, hands shooting up to cover your mouth with an indignant huff. You quickly wipe at your teeth, feeling humiliated. You were no match for Leona in a game of downright meanness.Â
Riddle settled his glare at him again, âYou could stand to be a little kinder if you want a chance at their hand.â
âI donât want a chance at their hand,â Leona shoots back. Despite how that should relieve you, your humiliation only grows at the idea that you are not desirable. (You did not want to be desirable, especially not to him, but you cannot control your emotions when they are already high.)
âBut your family does,â Comes the cool voice of Azul, sudden and jarring compared to the other competitions. A deceivingly kind smile grows on his face, and he waves his hand in the air as if dissipating your embarrassment like smoke with it. âI didnât mean to eavesdrop, the three of you were just so⊠amusing that I couldnât help myself.
You sigh, again fiddling with the fingers of your gloves. His words rang in your head, again faced with the fact that you were nothing but a chess piece in the larger game of politics right now. Suddenly, Riddleâs gentle kindness from earlier felt a little more⊠sharp.
Azulâs lips relax into what youâve come to know as his deal-making face â though you are sure that if he were to try and make a deal here your brother would execute him without a second thought. âA little kindness to our dearest benefactor couldnât hurt. They are, by all means, the key to our future success. They deserve at least respect for that.â
âYeah, yeah,â Leona drawls, slumping into his seat, âIâve heard the whole song and dance. Being a suck-up isnât gonna help your case any more than me though. Credit where creditâs due, theyâre damn perceptive for being so sheltered.â
Something more akin to a sneer than a smile climbs its way onto your face, âOh, thank you so much. How kind, Prince Leona. Iâm flattered, truly.â
âIs something the matter down there?â Your brother called. Your side of the table fell quiet, a chill running over you all (except Leona, who was never bothered by your brother's icy demeenor).Â
Used to the cold feeling climbing up your spine, you recovered the fastest, a sweet smile gracing your face, âNo, not at all Your Majesty. We were just discussing the arrangement between ourselves.â
He hums, staring you down. You do not break, like you know he wants you to. You would not bend. You could not. You had to show him you were capable, now more than ever.Â
Finally, he smiles, âPerhaps that would be good for all of us â to discuss why you are participating in this game for my beloved younger siblingâs heart?â
Your lips pull up into a lopsided smirk. So this was the game your brother was playing at. Force them to lay their cards on the table to start, while yours stayed close to your chest. It explained why he was so secretive about everything, and while you did not like being a pawn in his scheme, you could understand his methods. Masterful planning, as usual. Your frustration at his lack of communication is watered down by how impressed you are.Â
âWell, Princess, since you are the hand to be won, who would you like to hear from first?â Vil asks, all smiles as if he wasnât playing a game of mental chess this whole time.
If you wanted to succeed in this whole⊠suitor business, you had to be smarter. Faster. More precise.
âAh, there are so many lovely options here. Where shall we begin?â You hum, feigning thought as you gazed across the table, then finally landed on Leona.
âWell⊠since I was already discussing it, Iâll start with these three gentlemen!â You exclaim.
Leona sighs, annoyance clear on his face. The other two seem to accept their fate rather willingly, ready to come up with their noble (or not-so-noble) reasons as to why you should give them the time of day. âThe princess is kind, pretty, intelligentâ blah, blah, blahâ the usual. You had no intent to actually let them speak to start. So you tutted at them.
âDonât worry, I wonât put any of you on the spot,â you hum sweetly, âSee, I did a bit of digging, just to see what I could find, and did I find.â
You decide the least noble of the three would be put on the chopping block first, âLeona has no real stake in this fight for my hand. He does not like me, he does not have any real bearing on his kingdoms welfare, and quite honestly thereâs very little gain that the Sunset Savannah can earn from an arrangement between itself and our kingdom⊠except political prowess. To marry into our family would give them even more power and control than they already have, but they donât need it nearly as badly as others at this table. Is that right, Leona?â
Leona huffs out of his nose, clapping slowly at you, bemused by your straightforwardness. If there was one thing you did like about Leona, is that he acquiesced when he knew he had to. He was prideful, but he did not let it get in the way of his presentation, and that was refreshing compared to other royalty. âSpot on, princess.â
âNow⊠Riddle,â you say thoughtfully, âYou are a political pawn for whatever your mother wants, and right now she wants power. Much like Leona, you are here to better your standing among the other kingdoms and give your cabinet more moving room in this metaphorical game of chess. The Rosedom is already incredibly close with us, however, so I can only imagine the lack of movement stems from low funds?â
He nods, eyes narrowed in something akin to embarrassment and annoyance. Unlike Leona, Riddleâs and his Kingdomâs pride was everything to him, and you are afraid you mightâve squashed it â along with any friendliness that had been there earlier. âThat is⊠true. We are going through a horrible economic depression, and this arrangement would, hopefully, help us climb out of it.â
âSpeaking of moneyâŠâ you point to Idia, who looks like he mightâve pissed himself then and there, âyour family owns STYX?â
He nods, eyes watering and wide, like you were pointing a gun to his head. He is nothing like the man who borderline threatened you in the library some weeks ago, and the power rush you get from scaring him is a little too satisfying.
âIâm not exactly sure what you do there. I assume itâs magic-related, knowing your family history, and it likely isnât cheap. I also understand our⊠ahem⊠former magic research team was one of the best in Twisted Wonderland. I can only imagine that your family sent you here for money and better resources?â
He whimpers, and you take that as a resounding yes, shifting your focus to Kalim, who greets it with a wide grin. It makes you wonder, briefly, why there is even a debate about who you might marry in the first place. Kalim is kind, generous, rich, and incredibly handsome. Not to mention that servant Jamil of his is rather⊠charming. (The romanticist in you cannot help but imagine midnight trysts and forbidden love). Then you recall the horrible tales of attempted assassinations and remember why you never visited the Scalding Sands to begin with.
âI remember reading somewhere that your father was looking for more direct trade routes?â You ask aloud.
He nods, confirming it with all the delight in the world, âThe route Father has takes nearly two weeks, and many of the goods can easily be stolen in the dangerous territory on the outskirts of our kingdoms.â
âIt would half the travel time and double profit,â You add smartly, ânot to mention it eliminates the worry of marrying you off to someone who might want to kill you and your family. On top of that, we are already friends, so we could skip the pesky getting to know each other part of all this.â
His grin manages to widen, which charms you in a way only someone like him could. If only there were no major risks to your livelihoodâŠ
Your eyes flit over to Azul, who gives you a kind, placid smile. Fake, you think. Azul Ashengrotto was a mystery to you, despite knowing he had his claws (or, well, tentacles) in your kingdom's marketplace for years. He came out of nowhere from the deep sea with his two lackeys, and you hadnât been rid of him. However, he had never bothered you until now.
âYou are⊠an unexpected suitor, Azul.â You state plainly.
âMy apologies. I did not mean to inconvenience you,â he hums back, disgustingly kind.
âNo, no, it makes things more interesting,â you dismiss with an equally kind smile, âthe only thing I can imagine you would want is connections and power. Marrying a royal makes you one by default which means you can expand your business in ways that you could never do beforehand. Though, Iâm sure you could find a way without me.â
His smile cools into a more tense one, though he does not do anything more. Finally, you are faced with Malleus, who is smirking in interest at your tirade. You know very little of Malleus. You know very little of Fae. You do know, however, too much about politics. With this, you can reasonably infer a few things about this arrangement for your horned suitor.
âPrince Malleus Draconia of The Valley of Thornes is, perhaps, my most interesting choice among you all,â you begin, rubbing your chin thoughtfully, âFrom what I know, your Kingdom has plenty of influence, more than enough money, and a very strong army. You donât need our connections, you have no benefit economically, and human soldiers would be a laughable offer to you. So, what, could you want from this?â
The table is silent as you mull it over, many of the men equally curious as you are. (Sans Leona, of course, who would rather die than think about Malleus for more than a few seconds at a time). You cannot think of anything Malleus or his kingdom would gain from an alliance with humans, but he must need something. Your eyes glance over your brother and you notice, for just a second, a moment, something akin to nervousness crosses his face. Idia, you realize, also appears to have a knowing nervousness in his eyes.
Then, all at once, you connect it. Itâs magic. Itâs those monsters Rook is hunting. Malleus needs human help, for some reason, with those monsters. You canât voice that, of course, because your brother canât know that you know. So, you come up with something on the fly.
âYou need connection. Not for power, but because you want it,â you say finally, ânot to say you are lonely⊠perhaps you just wish for a different kind of connection? Human connection?â
His smirk slides into an impressed smile, posture somehow more straight, and eyes lighting up in delighted approval. You hate to admit that he is quite handsome when he is charmed like this. âYes, exactly. You are very observant, and much more thoughtful than I have given you credit for.â
âAh⊠thank youâŠâ you say slowly, doing your best not to show your annoyance at the unintentional jab to your intellect.
âI have read many books about humans and their behaviors. Their social habits, interests, abilities, and their kingdoms all fascinate me. I wanted a chance to come here and befriend some of you,â he admits rather willingly, and you find it rather cute how honest he is. Oh- wait, youâre supposed to dislike him! Stay stubborn!
âWell, I am honored that you chose me,â you say kindly, an overused platitude that always seemed to say enough when you needed it.
âYour observations are impressive,â your brother finally speaks up, and you can tell there is a thing of worry deep in his eyes, âtruly⊠I have no idea when you had the time to gather this information.â
âPeople talk. In the city, the castle, the courtyard. If you listen, you learn,â you state simply.
You know you are a prize to be won, you understand that you cannot stop that. What you can do is make it as difficult as possible for everyone else involved, and that is exactly what you will do. Kindness is a weapon in this game, and you will not be cut by soft words and gentle gestures.Â
So the dinner continues on, now with the knowledge that you are also playing their game. That you, perhaps, are several steps ahead of them. The tenseness does not subside, but neither does the conversation. You discuss politics with Riddle, your love of board games with Azul and Idia, food with Kalim, and even snark back and forth about your families with Leona. Malleus, for all its worth, discusses his enjoyment of your castles architecture, and you promise to show him the gargoyles near the south exit sometime during his stay.
It is⊠pleasant. Normal. A relief from all that has been stressing you. Despite the looming thought that all of this is for the show, you enjoy yourself as much as you can afford. Once all of you have eaten your fill, your brother gives another delightful speech, and you are all dismissed back to your quarters for the night. Except, your company this time is Riddle, not Epel.
âOh! I forgot to ask, those horse riding lessons, are they still on the table?â you ask excitedly.
He blinks, clearly taken aback, but recovers quickly, âAh, yes, those. Of course, I would not offer something and not mean it.â
You smile, âHow gentlemanly.â
âItâs common courtesy,â he rebukes.
âNot many people around here know what that means, so itâs refreshing to see that you do,â you state simply, enjoying the way his face heats up, âWould you⊠like to meet my horse?â
He raises an eyebrow, âI thought you had no expertise?â
âI donât, but I do have a horse,â you laugh, âsheâs my motherâs horse's daughter â a little confusing, I know.â
He laughs, a genuine one, âYou want to introduce me tonight? Is it not late?â
You frown a little, evading your gaze, âI⊠rarely sleep well anyway. It would be a nice distraction if youâd allow me?â
He does not say anything else but nods as if his mind is made up. You walk to the stables side by side, comfortable quiet overcoming both of you. Youâve realized you do not need too many words with Riddle, which is nice compared to how many words youâve come to need with everyone else. He is quiet as he slides open the door to the stables, and he is quiet and you lead him to the stable you know holds your girl.Â
You know that she is spoiled and well cared for, her glossy black coat and braided mane enough to tell you that. She is ridden frequently enough by visitors and trainers, so she is well-behaved when you reach in to let her sniff your hand. It takes her a moment, but somehow, she recognizes you and presses her nose against your palm.Â
âShe is beautiful,â Riddle mutters, clearly not meaning to say it out loud.
âI know, such a shame that I canât ride her,â you laugh, âhumiliating actually. What princess doesnât know how to ride a horse â her own horse even?â
He tuts at you, moving to slide the stable door open, excitedly observing her physique. She does not jerk away when he touches her, which only seems to excite him more. Itâs cute, you think, but you donât want to ruin his moment by voicing it. Finally, he sighs and turns to you with a⊠pitying look.
âIt is not⊠a secret that you are sheltered â even more than I was. I canât blame you for not living a normal life when you were not allotted it, and I think you should be kinder to yourself as well,â he responds.
You donât know what to say to that. What could you say to that? You knew your childhood and life as it was, was not normal. Not even normal for being the princess of a powerful kingdom. Other royals were afforded more freedom â even Kalim who constantly had a bounty on his head was allowed to do more, to see more, to be more than you. You just never liked to think about it, and you still didnât want to. Not yet, anyhow. Not with everything else on your mind.
âI appreciate the advice, Riddle,â you sigh finally, which relieves him of the tension that was steadily growing in his shoulders.
He rubs the side of your horse, patting her affectionately. She huffs, turning away from him. Itâs a funny sight, to see such a big thing cower from a small man. You do not hide your amusement this time, stepping into the stable with him. He smiles softly at you, beckoning you closer, and then he hands you a brush from a bucket.
âA good way to build trust between rider and horse is to spend quality time together,â he explains, âwhile you donât have much time together yet, we can start tonight by brushing her.â
He positions himself behind you, keeping a respectable enough distance between your bodies, then guides your movements across her strong body. You try not to pay attention to the warmth emanating off your bodies, or how his touch is so gentle on top of yours. You try to convince yourself that this positioning is necessary for the task at hand, that he is just being kind. (You are certain that Riddle is not the type to lead unsuspecting young princesses into dark stables for nefarious purposes.) You glance back to look at his face, which is red hot and does not make you feel any better.
âAre there⊠benefits for brushing a coat so short?â you ask, trying anything to take your mind off your predicament.
âSeveral.â his breath is hot against your face, âdespite the coat being short, it helps keep the skin healthy and removes any debris that could harm the horse in the long run.â you despise yourself for speaking in the first place, âIt also allows the rider to do a checkup to ensure everything is fine physically.â You curse the Seven for allowing you to be so stupid, âAnd, of course, it is often used as a means of strengthening your bond with the horse.â
You let out a shaky breath, âFascinating.â
He steps away after you are thoroughly hot and bothered, sighing to himself about something or other. You were too caught in your head to eavesdrop this time. Eventually, you set the brush back where you saw him grab it from, brushing off your silk gloves, then groaning as you realized you were still in the dress. The bottom of it was covered in dirt, and your gloves had bits of horse hair stuck in it.
âPerhaps the stables were not the best ideaâŠâ you sigh, pulling at the hair in your gloves.
Riddle grins, âI think youâre right. My shoes are disgusting.â
âI donât even want to check mine,â you groan.
You share a laugh, hearty and good, then dust yourselves off and wander your way to the fountain which is not too far from the stables. You discuss your love for sweets and learn of his affection for the guards he had brought with him â including Ace and Deuce, which surprised you with how harsh he was on them. It was tough love, of course, because contrary to popular belief Riddle Rosehearts was not a monster.
Reaching the fountain, the two of you settle upon its lip. From here you can see the exit where youâre meant to meet Rook. Your heart stutters at the thought. Because you were seeing Rook again or because you were meant to learn magic under your brother's nose⊠that was yet to be decided. Maybe it was both.
âYou are a hunter, yes?â Riddle asks suddenly, gaze following yours.
âIâŠâ You hesitate, no you werenât. Not anymore⊠not technically. âNot really. I used to be, and I was good. But these past few years my brother all but banned me from doing so.â
He hums, âFrom what Iâve heard, that hasnât stopped you at all.â
You feel your face heat up. What happened on your birthday was sure to get around, but no one had been bold enough to bring it up to you yet. You should feel proud of your little rebellion, but you felt almost shameful. âIt was⊠a last hurrah. That's all.â Besides, you think, after seeing the blot monster youâd rather not go hunting. Not without magic, at least. Ah, yes, magic. You were meant to ask him about that, hmm?
Truthfully, the idea of asking about magic was scary, because your brother had made it that way. But⊠all of your suitors were powerful magicians. Magic was natural to them, which helped ease their worries a bit. âYouâre⊠a magician, right? Ace and Deuce mentioned it once.â
He hesitates. Clearly, he was aware of the rule your brother implemented and withheld, but he was not a liar. â...I am. Iâve been practicing since I could walk.â
You nod, pulling at the fabric of your dress, âIs it⊠does it hurt? To perform spells and such?â
He shakes his head quickly, almost incredulous at the suggestion, âMagic is harmless â not harmless, I suppose, but it does not harm the user.â He huffs in disbelief, âI was aware you didnât practice magic, but I assumed you knew the basics.â
You shake your head, âWhat I was taught Iâve practically forgotten.â
He sighs, âI canât believe that⊠how long has it been since then?â
You shrug. You donât know. One day your parents were gone, and with them your magic professor and most other magic-related items in the castle. âMy brotherâŠâ
âIs a giant prick?â A voice came from the bushes nearby, and with it emerged Leona. Does he⊠never sleep in his room?
âWhat in the world are you doing?â Riddle questions before you can.
âWasnât feeling like going back to my room yet,â He says as if it's the most obvious thing in the world, âI was enjoying my nap until you two interrupted.â
âThis is my garden, Leona.â You state, and he shrugs. âAlso, donât talk about my brother like that.â
âHe is a prick. A royal asshole,â he repeats, âeveryone thinks it. I know you do too.â
Riddle nods, surprisingly agreeing with Leona, âWhile I wouldnât put it like that, your brother is⊠unpleasant most times.â
âToo much influence and power got to his head,â Leona emphasizes with a sharp point to his head, âhe makes everyone around him miserable, even his own family.â
You huff, glaring down at the muddied edge of your dress. He was right. You were miserable and the only one to blame was your brother. Heâd conditioned you well too, wanting to defend him. Though⊠part of that was just because you wanted to argue with Leona.
âAnd since weâre talking about it, his thing with magic is⊠insane!â He exclaims, with the most emotions youâd ever seen from him. âI donât need magic to function, no one does, but to withhold that from an entire kingdom might be his worst offense.â
Riddle adamantly nods along to what he says, âItâs incredibly hypocritical as well. He uses magic all the time, but he keeps it from everyone except a select few. Even sending raids to rid the city of magic every few months. Itâs the most extreme abuse of power Iâve seen, and Iâm my mother's son.â
You⊠were not aware of these raids. Sure, magic use was prohibited, but⊠how many of your citizens had been put away and punished for it. None, you hoped, but hope hadnât gotten you very far recently. Sevens, you could feel your blood boil.Â
âThe only thing worse is that he invited that stupid reptile Malleus,â Leona growled, âNo one likes him, heâs not wanted.â
Something about his attitude makes something⊠click in your brain. You could use this. You needed more allies you could trust within the castle walls. Their disdain for your brother was proof enough that they were not under his thumb.Â
âHeâs up to something,â you declare, drawing both sets of eyes to you.
âWell no duhââ Leona starts, but you cut him off quickly.
âNo. Heâs doing something far more dangerous and serious than usual,â You clarify, âAnd heâs using me â my hand in marriage â as a cover-up. A reason to get powerful people here.â
âOh yeahâŠ?â Leona quirks a brow.
âIf he⊠was planning something big, and he wanted powerful people, why wouldnât we know about it already?â Riddle asks, suspicious of the whole idea.
âBecause he needs you to make it look more natural.â You answer simply.
Leona chews on the idea for a while, and then smirks, âClever bastard. Sheâs right.â Riddle hums curiously, âThink about it. If he just invited Malleus or Idia, it wouldâve been suspicious. Weâre all cover-ups for whatever the hell heâs planning.â
âExactly!â You exclaim, standing and turning so you can face both of them, âAnd, I have an idea of what exactly heâs up to.â
Riddle watches you intently, and Leona gestures for you to go on. Your chest hums at the approval. Finally. Respect you deserve.
âNow, Leona, youâre going to laugh and Iâm going to ignore you,â You express, âYou know those ink monsters from our fairytale books, it has something to do with those.â
Leona rolls his eyes, âI told you, those arenât real. Theyâre kiddy tales to scare people like you off.â
Riddle, to your shared shock, hushes him. âLet them speak, you oaf.â
You take a deep breath, smile at him, and continue, âI know theyâre real because I saw one. I killed one myself the night I stood Malleus up at my party.â While you didnât exactly kill it, you decide the details are trivial, âWhateverâs going on, it has to do with those⊠things. I know it, and I have to figure out whatever it is without my brother knowing.â
Leona scoffs, but Riddle thinks it over, deeply, âYou really believe her? Couldâve been a big scary bear.âÂ
âMay I remind you of the grizzly head in our library? Who do you think did that?â You snap back. Riddle is quick to end the argument before it gets too intense.
âMany of our hunters, our very best come back with stories of inky beasts. Some are so taken by their fear that they refuse to step foot in the forest again,â Riddle explains as he thinks it over, âSo, with that in mind, they very well could be real. It would be too convenient for it to be mass hysteria, and I doubt so many hunters would come back with the same description of these monsters if it were some elaborate lie.â
Hope blossoms in your chest. Yes.Yes! Someone is listening. Someone understands! Leona sighs, not quite defeated, but not as skeptical as before. He seems⊠annoyed more than anything as he speaks.
âOne of my retainers back home â Ruggie, you know him,â you do know him. You like Ruggie. âHe came back one day whining about some⊠inky⊠thing he saw out picking dandelions or something. I thought he was just losing it⊠but- Anyway, even if they are real, what can we do about it?â
âMagic,â you state simply, âit can only be defeated by magic. You can widdle it down with physical attacks, but the only way to kill it is magic. I have a feeling the situation is much more out of hand than we expect, which is why my brother is being so hush-hush about it.â
Riddle nods in agreement, âInviting Idia should be proof enough of that.â
âOkay, so we got that figured out,â Leona interrupts, âwhat benefit is it for us to get in the way of your brother? Heâs got it under control.â
You frown. Sure, it looks like that, but knowing your brother⊠it probably was far out of control. That's why he was doing what he was doing, to get control. But diplomatic relations can only get you so far. A little selfish part of you also just wanted to prove yourself too.
âThe more people working on a problem the better,â Riddle saves with precision, âthe more angles we come at the issue with, the less likely it is to get out of hand. No matter the methods.â
You smile at Riddle for the millionth time that night, and nod in affirmation, âAnd, if you help me, I can help both of you.â
âHowâs that?â Leona scoffs.
âFirst, I can essentially make any semblance of this marriage thing disappear for you, and give your family what they want,â you explain, âYou donât have to work, and you donât have to deal with your brother scolding you. Riddle will be given sufficient funds and resources to help the Rosedom get back on its feet. You canât lose.â
He tenses his jaw, flexing it back and forth as he thinks it over. With Leona, thereâs no promise heâll say yes, but there's no promise he says no either. Finally, he sighs, âAlright, fine. Iâll help you, but only when I want to.â
âDeal!â you exclaim, âRiddle?â
âIâll help you. It benefits both of us, regardless of any reward you give me after the fact,â He answers.
You grin, and as if the world itself was bending to your whim, the clock tower tolled midnight. Perfect timing for an escape.

Supernatural Stains
Hello all, just wanted to start this off by saying I haven't written any sort of fan fiction since I was 12 and on Amino so please excuse all the bad writing! Hopefully I get better....
Anyways, here's sone info on the story: -1,064 words -Supernatural/Monster hunter AU -tf141xFem!Reader (it might have some y/n in the beginning but eventually you'll get a nickname and just be called that)
You could smell the man before he even thought of crossing the threshold of the laundry mat you worked in. Sour and unhappy with a hint of menthol, not too sure if it's from gum or some sort of vape.Â
The door security beeps as you slowly slip further back into the office, becoming unseeable to whoever is walking up to the counter, no doubt dropping off a load of laundry that they were too lazy to complete themselves. Sitting there a second, you stare at the short, bald, frowning man as he sets his bag on the counter and angrily looks around, somehow already inconvenienced even though he hasn't been here for more than two seconds.Â
âHow can I help you?âÂ
Your back cracks as you stand, easily towering over the barely 5-foot frowning man with your 5â8 stature. He begins to grumpily describe all the bells and whistles he wants done and added to his laundry, like bleach and fabric softener and maybe some pet dryer sheets, you're met with two new and much stronger scents.
One is a mix of dirt and morning mildew with a hint of Cedarwood and the other mirrors the beginning notes but instead of a matching musky smell instead there's a smidge ofâŠ.. Strawberry? An unexpected but not unwelcome smell, must be some sort of alcohol they bought at the liquor store next door.Â
Mr. Grumpy or sorry, Dave, seemed to have finished talking as now you were just staring at his back as he walked out. Dammit, definitely did not catch a word of what he said save for his name. Turning to your left, you're able to remote start one of the machines and go to grab some gloves and detergent, hopefully, the right stuff because you do not want to get scolded by Dave if you fuck up his laundry.Â
He seems to be the kind of man to leave 20 different negative reviews if you fold so much as his socks the wrong way. So even though he couldn't physically hurt you, vampire and all, he definitely could hurt your feelings which you did not feel like dealing with tonight.
âAren't ye a sight fur sorâ eyes.â A deep Scottish voice slices through your Dave-centered thoughts, damn at this rate you might be in love with the man with how much you're thinking of him. What a romantic story, doing his laundry first and then maybe a date, and before you know if you're married with loads of kids and a too-small house. You'd probably be an essentially forced stay-at-home mom with-
âYe a'richt thare Bonnie? Dae ah hae something onh mah face?â
Your vision zeros back into focus, realizing you've been staring at 2 very tall and very hunky men, who seem to be the sources of those alluring smells from earlier. Having to crane your neck to look the Scottish man in the eyes it becomes obvious they are over six feet. And damn are they not a sight for sore eyes, the Scott in front seems to be the one carrying the strawberry scent. It has a slight twinge of soap so it's clearly not liquor making him smell slightly sweet contrary to earlier thoughts.Â
The man behind him seems to straighten up slightly as you flash them a bright smile. You can't see his face due to the sunglasses and black surgical mask blocking it. It seems to be a bit too dark out for sunglasses but you don't judge, Lord knows you have days when you need to wear sunglasses even into the night if you go too long without feeding.Â
âIâm so sorry,â you say, a bright smile still on your face as you walk up to the counter across from both men, âhow can I help you?â
âNa worrieâ at a' bonnie, juist 'ere tae pick up some laundry. Shuid be under th' name Johnny MacTavish.â
Finding the bag was easy and Johnny paid, handing you a few bills with a parting wink and a âKeep th' chaynge.â He and his companion turned heel and walked out, taking their alluring smells with them. Though they were barely near you for more than 10 minutes, you catch yourself mourning the loss of their earthy scents.
The rest of your shift goes by quickly and uneventfully, Dave ends up coming in around 8:30 to grab his stuff and leaves without complaint much to your delight. Soon enough it was 10 pm and after locking the doors you began cleaning. As you swept your thoughts kept shifting to the two men from earlier, thoughts of their scents, heights, and looks kept you occupied.
What men like that were doing out here, you had no idea. Sure you had the odd oil field worker come in to drop off and while they were bulky in their own right, they had nothing on the two seemingly mountains called men. They must be police officers or maybe even a part of the military due to not only their statures but also the way they carry and present themselves. Though it seems a bit odd for military guys to be this far from any bases it's not impossible, especially considering they could have family nearby that theyâre visiting.Â
The thoughts clouded your mind and judgment as you set the security system and walked into the cold nipping air. The men cloud your thoughts so much that they effectively distract you from the fact that parked right next to your car is a truck that's been sitting there for the better half of 4 hours. Which normally wouldn't be super odd but considering it's a Monday night and the pub on the other end of the parking lot seems to have closed early, it probably should have raised some red flags.Â
That obviously didn't happen though as you opened the driver-side door and climbed in, luckily this bad boy has a remote start so it's already been idling for about 5 minutes and is nicely warmed up. Shifting into drive and pulling onto the road you were none the wiser of a certain someone lurking in the truck writing down your plates. Not that it would have mattered to you anyway seeing as the thoughts of the twin peaks have finally slipped your mind leaving just one thing behind, Hunger.
Thanks for reading!! Lmk if anyone has an tips on how to write better!

pepper & felix
part six
Pepper learns more about his soulmate.
MASTERPOST word count: 2.4k
âSoâ youâre gonna go sing in a room with a bunch of strangers, and then theyâre all gonna decide if they like you or not?â Pepper stared at Felix, bewildered.
It was late at night. Pepper sat on the back of Felixâs couch, while the human was seated sidewaysâ allowing them to face each other and remain around the same eye level. A movie was playing on the television, but the pair of them had since forgotten it, chatting absentmindedly.Â
After Pepperâs dreadful ordeal with Basil, he had spent the evening with Felix, eating dinner with him (some kind of pasta that Pepper was thrilled to try) and watching two movies, neither of which he quite understood but still enjoyed. Even though he had declared his trust for Felix on a whim earlier, he couldnât bring himself to be carried yet, and had insisted on walking from the kitchen to the couch himself. Felix, the kind man he was, had kept a respectful distance all night.
He seemed to have noticed Pepperâs uneasy, miserable behavior from the beginning. The borrower couldnât stop thinking about Basil⊠but it was easier to shove the thought of her away every time he focused on the man across from him, twenty times his size.
âI meanâ kinda?â Felix rubbed at the back of his neck, laughing in a quick exhale. âThe judges are trying to find someone to play this specific role. So there might be dozens of guys auditioning for the same part, and the judges are just gonna pick one of us for the cast.â
Pepper hummed thoughtfully. âOkay⊠yeah, that makes sense. I think.â He furrowed his brow. âAndâ your auditioning is tomorrow?â
âAudition,â Felix corrected. âAnd yes, in the evening. It shouldnât take too long.â
âWhen will you know if you get the cast?â
The human tilted his head, thinking. âMy school usually only takes a couple days to cast things. So⊠maybe a week?â
âAre you nervous?â
âHell yeah,â Felix responded dryly, and Pepper laughed. âIâve done a few shows at my university, but I donât usually get any big parts. Iâm a junior now, so maybe it will help that Iâm an upperclassman.â
At Pepperâs confused frown, Felix began to explain the concept of class standings, and the borrower nodded, pretending to understand. Humansâ lives were way too complicated than they needed to be.
Still, it was interesting to hear about Felixâs life. Pepper had only known him as âthe human who sometimes left this apartmentâ for a year, and he was excited to actually learn where he went all day.Â
He briefly thought of Basil, and his stomach twisted, knowing she would be furious if she knew where he was right now. Butâ Felix had proven himself time and time again to be respectful and kind, and Pepper had done the best he could to explain that to Basil.
She said she needed time to think, he reminded himself. She didnât ditch you forever. Hopefully sheâll come around.
âWhat about you?â Felix asked curiously. âWhat do you do for fun?â
Pepper blinked at him. Borrowers werenât known to have a lot of hobbies; most of their time was dedicated to just staying alive.
âFor fun?â Briefly, his gray gaze dropped to his jacketâ a baggy, blue material that he had cut from an old bandana. âWell, I like to sew. I just finished this jacket, Iâm really proud of it.â
He lifted his arms so that his small jacket was easier for Felixâs eyes to focus on. Felix blinked, and he briefly opened his mouth like he was about to say something, but decided against it. âThatâs really cool,â he praised. âYou made that whole thing?â
âYep.â Pepper nodded, beaming. He didnât usually have the opportunity to brag about his accomplishments to anyone. âYouâd be surprised how much old fabric you can find lying around. Old headbands, bandanas, gloves⊠especially in the laundry room, down the hall. Thatâs where I get most of my fabric.â
Felixâs expression was open, bright with interest. His curiosity about Pepperâs life wasnât a secret to either of them, and for once Pepper wasnât totally afraid to tell him about it. âI spend a lot of time sewing. Itâs calming, and you get something out of it that you can use later. Win win.â
âThatâs really interesting,â Felix said honestly. He leaned sideways against the back of the couch, watching Pepper, and Pepper suddenly felt as if he was being admired under a humanâs gaze rather than scrutinized. âI am not crafty at all. I wouldnât survive a day if I was your size.â
Pepper smiled, amused by the thought of Felix borrowing. âYou think so?â
Felix laughed. âNo way, man. I would be exhausted after climbing all day, but you didnât even break a sweat earlier. And I have no clue how to sew.â
âHonestly, a lot of borrowers donât know how to sew,â Pepper offered. âBut climbing, yeah⊠thatâs kind of a necessity. Youâre out of luck.â He snickered, feeling strangely powerful over the human twenty times his size.
Felix laughed with him for a moment, before hesitantly glancing over Pepper. âBorrowers?â He echoed softly, tilting his head. âIs that what your kind is called?â
Pepperâs small heart lurched, and in that moment he remembered that he was talking to a human. Suddenly cautious, he chewed his lip. âOh⊠uh, yeah.â He glanced left and right, as if someone might jump out and yell at him for being a traitor to borrowerkind.
To his relief, Felixâs features softened. âGotcha. Another secret, I assume?â
âYeah,â Pepper said, and it almost felt laughable. âYeah, so no blabbing.â He pointed a dramatic finger at Felix.
This was⊠strange, but comfortable. Pepper was very out of place in this apartment, perched on the back of a couch while speaking with a human twenty times his size⊠but deep down, he knew that he was safe. Felix had had so many chances to hurt him over the past week, but the human hadnât taken advantage of any of those. Despite being the size of his finger, Felix treated Pepper like a person.
After twenty more minutes of chatting quietly, the credits rolled on the movie, gentle music playing. Felix pursed his lips, checking the time on his phone. âI should probably go to sleep soon,â he said, almost apologetically.
Disappointment squirmed into Pepperâs stomach, but he acted casual. âYeah, no worries. Youâve got to be well rested for tomorrow.â
Felix sighed heavily. âIâm so nervous. I probably wonât even sleep at all tonight, letâs be real.â
Pepper laughed, pulling himself to his feet. He stretched his small arms over his head. âIâll stop by tomorrow before you leave,â he promised suddenly. âSo I can wish you good luck.â
Felixâs eyebrows raised, genuinely surprised. âOhâ thank you!â
âYeah.â Pepper beamed up at him. His heart was racing, but it wasnât out of terror anymore. No, this was a different feeling. âAlright, you get to bed. Iâve got a long walk ahead of me.â He yawned briefly into his sleeve before pulling his hook out, latching it onto the back of the couch.
Felixâs blue gaze lingered on the borrower, fretful, and Pepper knew that the human was struggling not to offer his hand to help. For a moment, Pepper wasnât entirely opposed to it.
But thatâ that would be too far. Sure, he could spend the night with Felix laughing and talking, but placing his life into the humanâs hand was another thing altogether. That would be transferring all of his power over to Felix. The thought was daunting.
âOkay,â Felix said finally, voice light. âGood night. Iâll see you tomorrow.â
Pepper sent him a wave as the human paced off to his bedroom, shutting the door with a gentle click. He watched the door for a long moment, mind wandering, before he pushed it all away and began sliding down the thread of his hook.
As his feet hit the floor, a voice entered his mindâ the same voice he had just been speaking with five minutes ago.
âHey soulmateâ I donât know if youâre still awake, but I just wanted to say good night. I watched some movies with a friend and now Iâm gonna go to sleep.â
A smile crossed Pepperâs face, and he clasped his hands against his chest. âHeyâ how did that go?â
âIt was great,â Felix said, voice warm. âMy friend is a little shy, so I was surprised when he asked to stay over, but he turned out to be really funny and sweet. I really like him.â
Pepperâs heart swelled, and for a single moment, he wondered if he should tell Felix everything.
âŠtell him that he, too, had had a wonderful evening.
âŠtell him that he had just spent the evening with his soulmate.
However, he only clasped his hands tighter and said, âIâm glad you had a good time! Iâll talk to you before your audition tomorrow. Goodnight.â
âGoodnight, soulmate.â
â
The idea came to Pepper just as he woke up. He immediately shot it down, shocked that he would even consider such a possibility.
He ignored it. He ate a bit of a grape and a cracker for breakfast, then spent the rest of his morning stitching up the leg of a pair of pants. He held it up in front of him, examining his work, and briefly thought back to his idea. He scoffed. It was an insane idea. He would never do that.
But⊠the idea didnât leave his mind all afternoon. He rethreaded his hook with stronger, more durable thread. He went for a walk. He spoke telepathically with Felix, encouraging him about his audition (feeling strangely as if he was the one playing a character). He scribbled his anxious thoughts into his journal. And yet, he couldnât stop thinking about it.
So, with a stomach filled with ice and a burst of adrenaline, Pepper approached Felix from behind the toaster. The human glanced over at him, holding tight to his mug of tea. âOh, hey, Pepper.â
The borrower swallowed. âI want to go to your audition with you.â
Felix laughed for a moment, but he stopped immediately at Pepperâs firm expression. His blue gaze scanned the borrowerâs form, eyebrows arched in confusion, as if Pepper might jump up and say, âPsych!â
âWhat?â Felix finally asked, baffled.
âI want to go with you,â Pepper explained, anxiously fumbling with his hands. âFor⊠for support. As long as no one sees me, it should be fine.â
Felix was silent, and the borrower flushed, taking a step back. âNevermind, this is stupid, I donât know why Iââ
âNo, no, itâs okay,â Felix said hurriedly, and Pepper paused. âI donât think thatâs stupid. I think itâs sweet, actually. But, you⊠youâve never wanted to be picked up before. This just doesnât seem like something you would want to do.â He blinked nervously, peering closer at the borrower.
Pepper forced a smile, rubbing his arm. âYeah, yeah. I know. If Iâm being honest, Iâm pretty fucking terrified right now.â He dragged a hand through his hair. âBut⊠I think this might be good for us.â
Felixâs eyebrow arched. âWhat?â
âYou know, like, our friendship,â Pepper said in a rush.Â
âGotcha.â The corners of Felixâs lips twitched into a smile, then fell. âYou know you canât come into the actual audition room with me, right?â
âI can just wait outside somewhere.â
âOkay⊠okay. IâŠIf you really want to do this, then yeah, you can come with me.â Felix took an anxious sip of his tea, thinking. âIâm leaving in twenty minutes. Uhâ please let me know if you change your mind before then. Okay?â
âOkay,â Pepper responded, knowing full well that changing his mind was a very real possibility.
As Felix flitted around the kitchen, nervously humming, drinking tea, and speaking with Pepper, the two of them planned out how their day would go. Pepper would sit on Felixâs shoulder on the walk there (âI have great balance, Felix, I promise I wonât fallâ), and during the actual audition, Pepper would wait inside Felixâs bag in the lobby. The entire excursion shouldnât take more than an hour.
When the time finally came to leave, Felix hovered near the counter, peering at Peper.
âIâve never picked you up before,â Felix reminded Pepper cautiously.
âYes you have,â Pepper said blankly, and Felix flushed.
âAside from that,â Felix said, abashed. âSo, are you completely sure you want to come? Itâs not too late to change your mind.â
âI swear, if I didnât know any better, Iâd think you didnât want me to come,â Pepper teased, although his hands were trembling. Deep down, he knew he was just stalling.
Felix shook his head, his lips twitching into a smile. After a moment of apprehension he lowered his hand to the counter, palm up, shaking somewhat. âOkay, Iâm ready when you are.â
Being faced with the task of placing his fate in anotherâs being hand was⊠not pleasant. Pepper swallowed, his gaze locking on the massive hand resting only a few inches away from him. Fingers that outmatched him in size curled in slightly, twitching nervously, each one strong enough to overpower him with one movement.Â
The borrower stepped closer, heart pounding. He could see the individual ridges embedded into that thick skin. Underneath was a lifeline that stretched up into Felixâs wrist, thrumming steadily with a pulse. Pepper forced himself to take a deep breath, placing a tentative hand onto Felixâs thumb to steady himself. The thumb twitched in response.
A week ago, he had been trapped in this hand, and the bruises had only barely faded. Realistically, there was nothing stopping Felix from snatching him up again, squeezing him tight, or⊠or stuffing him in a jar, orâŠ
Stop it. Pepper shook his head to clear his mind. This was his idea.
He wanted to send Felix an encouraging smile, but looking up at the massive human would probably only stress him out even more. Pepper swallowed, then placed his boot onto Felixâs palm.
He heard the quick breath from Felix, felt the air briefly move around him. Reminding himself that this was just as scary for Felix as it was for him, Pepper stepped fully onto his hand, holding his arms out to steady himself.
Okay.
This is okay.
He took a few cautious steps forward, wobbling slightly on the plush surface, until finally he had moved to the center of the palm. He held his breath, then sent Felix a thumbs up, unable to bring himself to speak.
âIâm gonna move you to my shoulder now,â Felix warned, and Pepper nodded rapidly.
At the first movement, Pepper gasped, squeezing his eyes shut. The world floated around him like an overbearing, threatening cloud, whispering to him that he was going to be dropped to his death in any second.
Butâ Felix moved slowly and carefully. Pepperâs eyes peeked open to see the humanâs fingers curling up protectively, ensuring that his tiny passenger would not fall.
When Felixâs hand stilled, Pepper looked up, finding himself being held up to Felixâs shoulder. The human was wearing a white button-up, with a thick gray cardigan over it. The knitted material made it easier for the borrower to climb up and sit down on Felixâs shoulder, close to the collar. âOkay,â he exhaled, heart racing. âWeâre good.â
The height was the first thing he noticed. Staring down past Felixâs cardigan and long legs, Pepper could see the floor. The only thing stopping him from plummeting to his death was his trust in the moving platform below him.
âFuck,â Pepper mumbled, inching closer to Felixâs neck. He held onto the white collar with fervor.
âYou okay?â Felix asked anxiously. He seemed to have been afraid to speak until this moment, releasing his words in one breath. âYouâre not gonna fall?â
Pepper nodded, then remembered that Felix couldnât see him. âYeah,â he assured the human, stomach twisting in knots. This was, by far, the most fucked up thing he had ever done in his life.
If Basil could see him nowâŠ
Pepperâs stomach went cold, and he pushed the thought away, taking a deep breath. âAlright. Iâm ready when you are.â

âSweet Oneâ Spn Gabriel x plus size! Reader
(A/N: Requested by @bubblegumfanfics for love confessions galore! I hope you like it! I had rewatched Pride and Prejudice the other day and uhâŠhad to reel back the confessions a bit. Warnings: Tiny angst and fluff Word Count: 943 words)
~~~
Good music. Good vibes. Good baking!
The relief and bubbling joy to have time in your schedule to bake was almost tangible. You loved it.
Baking was a science. An art! It didnât matter where someone was or what they looked like â they could experience baking in some form. Hopefully.
You, for one, were putting another dessert into your experience. Hence the cooling pan that held a chocolate cake fresh out of the oven set away from your next task.
It looked good. But so did you.
Readjusting your apron, you smiled at the fabric.
This is so cute, you thought. Totally worth it for the pockets alone.
Who said aprons had to be boring?
You had every right to look and feel cute while baking. Maybe highlight your favorite features and curves. You were a human not a cardboard cutout or edited picture. Personality and shape made a person.
Perhaps not a certain archangelâs preferred shape of human.
But heâs my friend. No downside there.
You could accept that.
A falter in your smile slowed you only a little.
There was cookie dough in the refrigerator that needed to be sorted for baking and plenty of counter space after the dishes you had finished washing. No time for sour thoughts thatâd get you nowhere.
Besides, you thought as you opened the fridge, these cookies are for Gabriel. Thereâll be more than a dozen this time.
Cold bowl of dough in hand, you turned back to the counter, only to find the very archangel you had been thinking of. Never a coincidence.
Gabriel was busying himself by sniffing the chocolate cake.
A smile pulled on your lips.
âHi. Did you nose bring you here?â You inquired with a light laugh, shutting the fridge door.
âPartially.â He tapped his fingers across the countertop.
âUh-huh.â You set the bowl down beside the baking sheets.
Golden eyes looked up and held your gaze.
âAnd I wanted to see you.â
âOoo.â You placed your hand over your heart. âThat is incredibly sweet.â Picking up a scooper, you added, âAnd I may have something sweet for you in return â if you donât eat the dough.â
Hands up in defense, Gabriel promised, âIâll wait. I did just say why I came, remember, sugar?â
âYeah.â
Brushing off the term of endearment, you started scooping the cookie dough into small spheres. There was an after thought to make them bigger, but you challenged yourself to stick to the plan. Anything to keep your thoughts in place. You couldnât exactly say the same on the fluttering in your stomach.
âChocolate chip cookies.â Gabriel hummed in approval as he made his way to the other side of the counter.
âI know itâs one of your favorites.â
âAnything from you is my favorite.â
Grinning a little bashfully, you replied, âThank you. Thatâs really sweet of you to say. I do save the best ones; hide any burnt cookies or crumbled brownies.â
âNow whoâs the sweet one?â Gabriel leaned against the counter and lightly poked your shoulder.
âItâs all the baking, I guess.â
The heat creeping up your neck was almost as distracting as the feel of Gabrielâs honey-colored gaze.
Just make sure thereâs chocolate chips in each one, you instructed yourself.
Doing your best to focus was usually so simple when baking. A fun activity to zone into. At that moment, you were unsure.
Behind you, the string on your apron had moved. Hardly noticeable. Yet you knew why.
âAre you entertaining yourself or are you trying to signal for a piece of cookie dough?â You peered over to your friend.
âI was thinking.â He dropped the fabric from between his fingers.
âOkayâŠâ
You set aside the scooper and turned to Gabriel.
âI love your baking.â
You grinned briefly.
âAnd I,â he swallowed, âIâm grateful for your friendship and kindness and you.â Standing upright, he continued, âYou make existing worth something.â
Upon opening your mouth to respond, no words came. Your mind was a fuzzy mess with most words blocked by you trying to sort out how you felt about his words and if you were about to overthink it all.
âYou still donât know, do you?â Gabriel asked softly.
Your brows pinched in curious confusion.
âApparently not,â you noted.
Did you dare allow yourself to hope? To think he just might like you with your caring personality and unique curves as more than a friend?
You dearly hoped you werenât reading him wrong. Either way, you were certain to hear something from your dear friend.
âWhat are you trying to say?â You asked, ever cautious of the thumping of your heart.
âTruthfully?â
âYeah.â
âI love you.â
His words resonated in the quiet of your home. Neither of you rushing to fill the air.
Closing your eyes for a moment, you breathed in deeply to center yourself.
This is real. Does heâ
âI love you so much itâs almost ridiculous,â Gabriel continued. âI donât know where to even begin.â He took a chance and grabbed your hand. âThis is real and I hope Iâm not a complete fool for thinking you might feel the same. Even a little.â
âYou,â you covered a joyous laugh, âIâm ridiculous.â
He titled his head.
âI thought you didnât like me that way.â
Stepping closer, Gabriel poked your nose, stating, âYou are ridiculous for thinking that. How could I not fall for you, sugar? I have literally tripped when youâve smiled. Not that I minded much.â
You shook your head with a fond smile and took hold of his other hand. Sighing, you confessed warmly, âI love you too.â
Honey-colored eyes had never appeared so bright.
âAlright, Matt,â Foggy said with a sigh.
Matt heard the way Foggy stepped inside his office and leant up against the doorframe before loosening his tie. The sound of fabric fibers rubbing against each other was sharp and loud as it met Mattâs ears. His head rose up from his work, his fingers pausing on the braille before him as he focused on Foggy in the doorway, sending him a tight smile.
âWhat is this super secret thing you wanted to do with me after work today that absolutely could not wait for another day?â Foggy asked.
Matt's brows drew together as he reached over, his fingers pushing up the sleeve of his shirtt as he felt for the time on his watch. âItâs already five?â he asked, double-checking for himself.
âYup, buddy,â Foggy answered, running a hand through his hair. âThe day dragged on, but alas, it is finally over. Or, at least, the work day is. Though my day is not, since, you know, you practically begged me to assist you this evening with something that you would tell me nothing about."
Internally Matt disagreed with the sentiment about the day dragging on as he began to gather up the papers scattered along his desk. For him, it felt like the day had flown by. He'd been trying to focus on his work all day today, but truthfully all he could think about was finding the perfect engagement ring later once he'd finished at the office. He had absolutely no clue what the first thing was when it came to picking an engagement ring.Â
And if Matt was being honest, this was the first time in a long time that he found himself feeling self-conscious about being blind. Because it wasn't like he could see all the different styles and options of rings to find the one he wantedâthe perfect one that you'd hopefully wear on your finger for years to come. The one that felt like it fit you . The one you'd say yes to. Admittedly it pained him to ask for help with something so personal and intimate, even if Foggy was like a brother to him. He desperately wished this was something he could do on his own.Â
"So are you going to tell me what we're doing?" Foggy questioned again. "Is it something to do with Daredevil? Because I'll be honest, buddy, I'm not so sure I want to get involved in anything illegal. I'd like to retain my ability to practice law after all the hard work I put into getting that degree."
Matt laughed lightly, sliding his chair back from his desk. "It's nothing illegal. And it's nothing to do withâŠthat aspect of my life."
"Okay, so then why the cloak and dagger?" Foggy pressed. "If it's not about Daredevil then I don't get what's withâ"
Matt's head tilted to the side, his dark brows pinching together the moment he heard Foggy suck in a sharp breath. He abruptly crossed the room, planting both of his hands firmly on Matt's desk.
"Matthew Michael Murdock are you doing what I think you're doing?" Foggy asked, his question hushed and fast.
"I suppose that depends on what you think I'm doing," Matt countered slowly, rising to his feet.
"Are youâ" Foggy leaned in closer to him, "â proposing ?"
A grin drew itself onto Mattâs face, one that he couldnât possibly fight back. Not as the memory of you calling him family from the other day flashed through his mind.
"Well, I need a ring first," he answered.
Foggyâs right hand curled into a fist before he pumped it up and into the air so abruptly that it took Matt by surprise. The loud whoop he emitted next had managed to last a duration of two seconds before Matt had thrown his hand forward, waving it frantically at Foggy and quickly trying to calm him down as panic shot through him.
"Fog, relax," Matt said in a hushed tone, already hearing the clicking of Karen's heels heading towards his office. "I'd like to keep this between us for now so it can remain a surprise."
"Sorry, you just don't know how excited I am right now," Foggy replied in an excited rush. "You don't know how long I've been waiting for this moment, man. I justâ"
"What're you so excited about that you're shouting in here without me?" Karen asked, cutting Foggy off. âWhat moment have you been waiting for?â
Matt could hear the hard swallow from Foggy, noticing the way his friendâs palms had begun to sweat. He was nervous. Which meant Matt probably needed to come up with a fast lie to get Karen off this topic as quick as possible, especially because he was certain that subtle shift in the air was from her gaze curiously dancing back and forth between the pair of them.
âFor that new bakery opening up near his apartment,â Matt said, straightening his tie. âHeâs been talking about it all week.â
Karenâs eyes narrowed, her head tilting to the side. âHe has?â she asked.
Foggy let out a nervous laugh, the sound of which had Matt struggling not to wince. If he kept it up, sheâd figure out what was going on in no time. Karen was far too smart and perceptive.
âSuppose it was only to me then,â Matt replied, cutting Fog off before he could speak. âConsider yourself lucky. If I have to hear about bear claws again I might stuff tissues in my ears.â
âMmm,â Karen hummed out. âWell, I suppose Iâm heading home for the night. Unless either of you need anything?â
âNo, Karen, weâre just about to head out, too,â Matt said quickly, shooting her a wide smile. âWeâll see you tomorrow morning then.â
âRight,â she replied slowly, dragging the word out.Â
There was a brief pause before she said goodbye, and then both Matt and Foggy remained absolutely silent until theyâd heard the main office door shut and her heels clicking down the hallway. Foggy exhaled an audible breath, rubbing a hand across his forehead.
âSorry, Matt,â he apologized. âI forgot she was even here for a moment. It's justâyou're going to ask your girl to marry you! This is fantastic news!"
âItâs alright,â Matt assured him with a grin. âBut can we just keep this between the pair of us? Iâm not sure exactly when Iâm proposing, but Iâd like it to be a surprise for her. So Iâd prefer Karen and Marci not finding out ahead of timeâespecially Marci. We both know she canât keep a secret.â
Foggy laughed lightly, shaking his head. âNo, that she absolutely cannot do,â he agreed. âSo do you know where you want to go to look, orââ
âI know exactly where I want to go,â Matt replied, cutting Foggy off as he made his way around his desk. âI just donât know exactly what to get.â
âWell youâre in luck, buddy,â Foggy told him. âBecause Iâve done this before and it resulted in a positive outcome, so Iâd like to think that makes me an expert when it comes to engagement ring shopping.â
Matt chuckled, shaking his head. âIâm counting on it, Foggy.â
Mattâs fingers ran over the ring in his hand, his lips pursed as he tried to focus on the feel of it. Bringing Foggy with shopping for an engagement ring had proved helpful, he had to admit, but the final decision ultimately came down to him. And picking out a ring hadnât been easy so far, either.Â
Currently he had narrowed his choices down to two, but he was torn between them. One was a yellow gold ring with a solitaire pear-shaped diamond, and the other was a white gold ring with a round solitaire diamond surrounded by a series of smaller onesâapparently called a âhalo.â Heâd eventually concluded that the ring styles with multitudes of diamonds just didnât suit you. Because you were not flashy and loud, but rather delicate and understated yourself. He figured he wanted a ring that reflected that, one youâd feel comfortable wearing.
But he was also torn between something he thought youâd likeâbecause the woman helping him had assured Matt that solitaire pear-shaped diamond engagement rings were definitely in right nowâor something he thought reflected the relationship you both had. The round solitaire with the halo of diamonds was the one heâd been leaning towards; as tacky as it sounded, the circular shape of the diamond did signify that there was no beginning or end to his love for you, plus it was classic and timeless. And the idea of a halo suited you, after all.
His thumb ran over the pear-shaped diamond again, the tip of it pricking the pad of his finger each time. A frown settled on Mattâs lips.
âWhat is it?â Foggy asked quietly, leaning in towards him. âYou look deep in thought.â
âThis one just doesnât feel right,â Matt murmured, the tip of the diamond sharply catching on his finger again. âIn more way than one.â
âThen itâs not the one,â Foggy said simply, plucking it out of Mattâs fingers. "What about the other one? What's that one making you feel?"
Foggy placed the round cut ring into Matt's upturned palm. He could feel the weight of the woman's eyes on him from behind the counter, clearly hoping for a sale. He tried to ignore it as he ran his fingers over the shape of it. Nothing caught his skin uncomfortably as he did, not like the other ring.Â
For a moment he stood there, feeling the ring in his hand. He imagined it on your finger as he held your handâthe pair of you out at dinner, sitting on the couch together, or after he'd come home from his night out as Daredevil. He imagined running his thumb along it as he called you his fiancĂ©, hearing the way the muscles would shift in your face as you smiled. Gradually a small smile slid onto his lips at the thought, his thumb running over the diamonds again as he imagined feeling it on your finger with a second band, finally being able to call you his wife.Â
"It feels like it's for her," he whispered to Foggy. "This is the one. This is her ring."
"Yes!" Foggy exclaimed, clapping Matt excitedly on the back. "I think I'm shaking in excitement over here, man! I can't believe this is finally happening!"
Matt's smiling face focused back down on the ring in his hand. "I can," he told him. "Because it was always going to be her for me. Knew it from the moment she first stumbled into Josie's."
"Now you just need to propose," Foggy told him, patting him on the back again.
Nerves swirled in Mattâs stomach at the thought of finally asking you that life altering question. He'd had an idea planned for that moment for quite a long time now and he only hoped you liked it when he did finally ask.
"I just hope she says yes," Matt whispered.Â
"Of course she will," Foggy said, nudging him with his elbow. "Don't overthink it. Sheâs crazy in love with you, too. Anyone can see it just by looking at her face, Matt."
Tuesday
You awkwardly unlocked the apartment door while trying not to spill the contents of the takeout bag in your hands. Tonight had been a late night at the office for you, having been busy working on meeting a deadline for Ellison before you left. You'd called Matt at his office earlier, telling him that you'd be the one running late tonight and that you'd grab dinner from the Thai restaurant around the corner before you came home so that he didnât have to worry about cooking.
Opening the door and stepping inside, you were surprised to be met with silence. Confusion washing over you, you wondered if maybe something had happened in Hellâs Kitchen and Matt had gone out early. As you took your shoes off, placing them under the bench and out of the way so no one would trip on them, you noticed the doors to the closet where Matt kept the trunk of his father's things and his Daredevil suit was partially ajar.Â
Brows knitting together, you made your way down the entryway hall towards it. If Matt had gone out, he'd have fully shut the doors after getting dressed. It seemed odd he'd have been in that much of a hurry to forget that.
Though when you neared the closet, you spotted one of his red gloves lying on the floor just behind one of the chairs. Frowning, you stepped over towards it and bent down to pick it upâwhich was when you finally found Matt.
Dressed in a black-tee shirt and gray sweatpants, his large body was curled up on the leather couch under the plush blanket you'd replaced his plaid one with. He was fast asleep, looking absolutely peaceful, but your heart nearly melted when you spotted Mittens' dark gray body curled into a tight ball against Mattâs chest. Nestled in between Matt's muscular arms, the cat looked even smaller than usual.
A smile gradually made its way onto your lips as you watched the pair of them for a moment. They both looked comfortable and content sleeping as they cuddled up together. Despite Mattâs attempts to tell you he wasn't a cat personâor a pet person of any sortâyou'd noticed how often he was usually talking to or playing with the cat. Often when he passed by Mittens laying in his cat tree that youâd recently gotten him, Matt would always stop to pet him. It was such a common occurrence that even Mittens expected it, usually raising his head and softly mewing at Matt whenever he neared.
Glancing down at the glove in your hand, you figured Mittens must have gotten into Mattâs trunk while he was asleep. You knew some nights Matt came home exhausted and didn't fully shut and lock the trunk after himself. Mittens must have opened the closet with his little paws and somehow pushed the lid open. Though how the cat had somehow managed to pull his glove out from under that false bottom was an absolute mystery to you.Â
Quietly you crossed the living room, making your way over towards the kitchen table to set down the bag of takeout. When you turned, intending to put away Matt's glove, you spotted him groggily sitting up awake on the couch.
"Hey, Matty," you said, making your way back across the living room. "I just got home. I grabbed dinnerâit's on the table. I'm just picking up quick if you want to get started on dinner."
"Picking up?" he asked drowsily. âPicking up what?â
His head was tracking your movements across the apartment, his expression switching from drowsy to alert suddenly.
"Yeah, it looks like Mittens got into your trunk again," you told him. "Pulled out a glove. I was just going toâ"
"I got it," he said in a rush.Â
You hadn't even had a chance to open your mouth to respond before Matt was at your side, removing the glove from your hand. He sent you a tense smile before he gestured his head towards the kitchen.
"You had a long day," he continued. "Why don't you go start on dinner? I can put this away."
You stood there confused, blinking at him and his odd behavior for a moment. After a few seconds, when he urged you a second time to go get some food, you finally nodded and turned. Heading back towards the kitchen to get everything plated for dinner, you briefly wondered what that had been about.
WednesdayÂ
"Uncle Matt! Uncle Matt!"
The sound of his name ringing out so enthusiastically in the apartment by your now almost four year old nephew easily put the biggest smile onto Mattâs face. He'd barely managed to exit the entryway hall after taking his shoes off before he heard Hudson racing across the apartment. The boy nearly knocked him over when he threw his arms around Mattâs leg, clinging to him in an excited hug.
"Hey, Huds," Matt said with a warm chuckle. "Your aunt told me you might still be here when I got home and I was hoping she was right. I missed you, buddy."
Matt reached his hand down, affectionately ruffling the boy's hair. Hudson giggled, releasing Mattâs leg only long enough to grab onto his hand instead. Matt could hear the way your smile grew from your place on the couch in the living room, watching as Hudson began to drag him into the room further. His heart swelledâhe loved you and your family, even if he could still feel Amber occasionally giving him the side-eye when she was around.
âHuds, why donât we let Matt have a minute to relax?â you suggested. âHe just got in the door from work, bud. He might want to get changed.â
Hudson didnât remotely let up his hold at your suggestion, continuing to drag Matt around the couch. His little hand had a surprisingly strong grip for a toddler.Â
Matt shook his head at you, the smile still spread wide over his face. âThatâs alright, sweetheart,â he assured you. âI donât mind at all.â
âI finally got to meet Mittens, Uncle Matt!â Hudson exclaimed, finally dragging Matt to a stop beside the coffee tableâthough he didnât relinquish his hold on Mattâs hand. âHes so soft and cute! And he really liked my dinosaurs!â
âHe did?â Matt asked curiously, head tilting to the side.
âYeah!â Hudson replied. âMomma got me some new ones. Mittens was running around playing with them. It was silly, wasnât it, auntie?â
Matt heard the way you pushed yourself up from the couch, his attention curiously shifting towards you.
âYeah, he definitely was having a blast with them,â you agreed, lowering down to your knees before the couch. âAnd I think he mightâve knocked a couple under here, actually. Ahh, yeah, here they are.â
âThere was another one over there,â Hudson said.
Mattâs heart sped up in his chest when he noticed Hudson was pointing near the other side of the apartment. A sharp spike of adrenaline shot through him because heâd moved your engagement ring from the trunk with his suit to behind the radiator after you almost found it last night when heâd been napping on the couch.
âWhereâd it go again?â you asked. âBehind the radiator?â
Matt heard the way the air shifted as Hudson nodded his head. The moment he heard you making your way over there he panicked. If you looked back there youâd surely see the ring box heâd tried to hide and he didnât want to propose to you right here and now, not like this. He had something more planned for that.
âYou know what?â Matt said quickly, shooting you a nervous smile as he began walking swiftly towards the radiator. âI can grab it. Donât worry about it.â
He heard the way you paused, one of your brows raising onto your forehead. He could practically hear you thinking about how weird he was being right now.Â
âYouâve had a tough week at the office,â Matt continued, turning and heading over towards the radiator while you were still hesitating. âJust enjoy the time with Hudson.â
âI mean itâsâŠnot that hard to grab something from behind there, Matt,â you said slowly.
His mouth went dry when he heard the strange tone to your voice. Like you thought he was acting off.Â
Because admittedly he was.
âExactly!â he exclaimed.
He shot you a smile over his shoulder as he bent down, sticking his hand behind the radiator. Your eyes were watching him so carefully that he could feel your stare as his fingers brushed over the velvet box. Still smiling at you, he deftly managed to grab both the box and the little dinosaur, pocketing the box discreetly into his suit pocket as he held up the dinosaur in his other hand.
âFound it!â he called out, palms sweating.
Thursday Â
Stacking your clean bras in the top drawer of the dresser, you overheard the apartment door opening and closing. You smiled to yourself as you made your way back to the bed, grabbing a stack of your clean socks next. Youâd loved living with Matt, adjusting a little faster than youâd anticipated despite some of the small mishaps the pair of you had had over the past couple weeks.Â
Glancing up as you headed back to your dresser drawer, you caught sight of Mittens. Heâd followed you into the bedroom a bit ago when youâd brought in the load of clean laundry and began to sort through it. Heâd long since fallen asleep in his little hammock by the window when youâd started folding the laundry, but the sound of Matt shuffling through the living room had caused him to stir awake. His green eyes were blinking tired and slow, focused on the bedroom door as if he expected Matt to step through.
And sure enough, as you were closing the drawer of the dresser, you felt a pair of hands slip around your waist. The smile on your mouth only grew wider when he leaned over your shoulder, planting a kiss to your cheek.
âMissed you today, sweetheart,â Matt murmured.
âI missed you, too,â you said, turning in his arms. âBut we did talk on the phone through part of lunch today, if you remember.â
He hummed in response, nodding his head. âAhh yes, how could I forget? Katy had some very detailed things to tell you about her date the other night even though she knew you were on the phone with me.â
âYeah,â you said with a laugh. âShe has no shame, that one.â
âMmm, no, but Iâm glad sheâs fixated on someone elseâs cake for now,â Matt said.
âAhh yes,â you replied, making your way back towards the bed when Matt released you from his hold. âIâve heard her talk about that a little too much today, actually. Though she did still say yours is superior, so do not fret, Matt.â
You giggled at the sound of Mattâs groan as you picked up his stack of boxers. Turning, you made your way back towards the dresser, though you noticed the way Matt tensed. Before you could even reach out and open the drawer, Matt had tossed an arm out in front of you, blocking you from the dresser. Taken by surprise, you stopped abruptly and pulled a face.
âWhatâre you doing?â you asked him.
âI should ask you that as well,â Matt quickly shot back.
You glanced down at the stack of freshly laundered black boxers in your hands. Slowly your attention shifted back up to Matt. One of your brows rose up onto your forehead, your eyes narrowing suspiciously at him.
âPutting away your clean laundry,â you replied. âObviously.â
Mattâs hands flew forward, taking you yet again by surprise when he grabbed the stack from your hands. The smile on his face looked forced, which only had your eyes narrowing further.
âHow about I finish putting away my laundry and you can start the oven?â he asked. âIâll finish taking care of dinner once I get changed.â
Your eyes gradually slid down towards the dresser, noticing how Matt was now blocking it more fully with his body. Which wasâŠodd.
âIs there something in there you donât want me to see?â you asked him curiously. âBecause Iââ
âNo!â Matt replied quickly, his smile growing even wider as he shook his head. âNo, not at all,â he added, his voice an octave higher than usual. âI just want you toââ
âRelax?â you cut in. âYeah, youâve been saying that all week. Itâs getting kind of weird, actually.â
âWell youâve just been so stressed at the Bulletin and dealing with me home most of the week,â Matt told you. âI figured since Iâm here I can try to give you some breaks, right? So why donât you start the oven and relax your pretty little self on the couch with one of your shows, sweetheart. Let me finish this.â
For a moment you stood there, eyeing Matt suspiciously. He was up to something, that much was obvious. But what remained a mystery to you.Â
Figuring it had something to do with Daredevil, you sighed and nodded before heading out of the bedroom.
Sunday Â
Matt could hear the tension in Foggyâs muscles as he slid the living room window open. From his place on the fire escape, Matt could still hear Marci in their bathroom presumably washing the makeup off of her face.
"What the hell are you doing here, Matt?" Foggy hissed through the opening. "You know you can stop by dressed in normal clothes using the front door, right? Not popping up on the fire escape dressed like that ."Â
Foggy dramatically waved his hand, gesturing at Mattâs Daredevil suit. Matt sighed before holding up the box in his hand, hearing the way Foggy gasped the moment he noticed it.
"Wait, are you proposing to her?" Foggy asked in shock. "Oh buddy, please tell me you're not doing it in the suit. Because as much as I'm sure you think she might enjoy it, I don't think she'd actually want youâ"
"Fog, stop," Matt said, waving his hand at him. "Of course I'm not proposing to her in the suit. I'm not proposing tonight, I just came to ask you a huge favor."
He heard the way Foggyâs eyes narrowed, his head tilting curiously to the side. In the other room, Marci was still thankfully washing her face.
"What sort of favor are we talking about?" he asked slowly.
"Can you keep this here?" Matt practically begged, holding the box with the ring in it higher. "Preferably somewhere Marci can't find it and spoil the surprise? Because I have been going insane this week, Fog. Every time I hide it somewhere I think she'd never goâthe radiator, next to my suit in the trunk, my damn shoesâshe keeps almost finding it. And Fog, buddy, I can't take the anxiety anymore. I swear she must already think something is going on."
"Okay, yeah, sure," Foggy replied, accepting the box Matt practically shoved at him. "I can keep it safe here until you need it."
"Oh thank God," Matt said with a relieved sigh. "You have no idea how grateful I am. I owe you one."
"Think you owe me more than one, Matt," Foggy countered.
Matt sent Foggy a sheepish smile. He was about to respond when he heard the faucet turn off in the bathroom.Â
"Marci is about done, I got to go," Matt said in a rush. "Hide that somewhere good, please. ButâŠdon't forget where, either."
As Matt turned and hopped over the fire escape railing, he caught Foggyâs promise to safeguard his ring, considering it his first duty as Best Man. The comment had Matt grinning as he continued to make his way down the side of the building.
