(1.6.2024) Mugiwara space vol. 17 feat. Kazuya Nakai and Kamiya Hiroshi highlights! I don't promise accuracy
Source (give it a listen if you have time! it has teasers to the new opening and ending)
-
Kazuya Nakai - Zoro || Kamiya Hiroshi - Law
-It's Kamiya's second time in Twitter Space, previously he was with Mayumi Tanaka (Luffy). He says that last time he babbled a lot thanks to Mayumi san's presence, even though he forgot most of it by now (hmm how convenient that you forgot this, kamiya san 🤨)
-Anytime One Piece (the 24/7 YouTube broadcast of the episodes) has 150M views and already in its 4th lap having completed broadcasting all episodes 3 times.
-The entire Space focused on the two voice actors reading out a heap of letters from the animation staffs about the Zoro vs King and Kid-Law vs Big Mom episodes.
-Kamiya jokes about being slightly younger than Nakai and calling him "Nakai-kun" instead of "Nakai san". Funny that Kamiya's career as a voice actor is actually longer than Nakai's.
-The Zoro vs King finale had 20000 frames in the episode which set a record. The movements were a lot more fluid and film-level. After all, often it's considered overwork if it crosses 5000 frames in a TV episode.
- The animators themselves tried out new things. It seems in one of the shots, Wado ichimonji's direction was reversed from the manga's direction as a realistic correction. Cue jokes about Zoro (and King's) long (long) attack names. Also, anticipation for legendary Mihawk vs Zoro to match the quality.
- Cutting to Kid-Law vs BM, Kamiya commented that it was scary that the fluidity of movements was so good that it made him wonder if that level of effort was necessary at all (he said it's like a Disney movie).
(in case you didn't know, this scene was indeed animated by an animator who worked in Disney.)
- Kamiya says it was both fortunate and unfortunate that Mami Koyama (Big Mom) wasn't there with them in the booth (she recorded her part separately). Both Kamiya and Nakai agreed that they'd give up immediately if they were to confront against Mami Koyama somehow.
- Kamiya also noted that Big Mom used "ore" to call herself in the final scene ("I am Big Mom") - exerting dominance 💪 her falling scene was intentionally animated beautifully.
- 1066 was animated by people all over the world, so the time adjustments and language barrier was a challenge. Episode director Henry thurlow balanced it well. In his letter, Henry credited the animation director for adjusting a variety of art styles from all participating animators. It was his first time directing a One piece episode, in fact it's the first time a foreigner has directed an anime episode. He thinks the episode was successful.
- Kamiya was calling Kidd "the extra budget man" for having his complicated-to-animate attacks costing extra budget 💸
-In the final scene vs Misery, Kamiya was asked to ad-lib breathing sound for Law. Kamiya immediately said "sure, got it". Regarding this, Kamiya said he loves doing ad-libs, it adds a little more life to the characters.
- Finally, announcement for the upcoming Egghead arc debut in anime (Nakai was exhausted of reading letters so Kamiya took over to read director Nagamine's final letter lol)
- The Egghead arc would appear in a new artstyle. Unlike the serious WCI and Wano, there's a more relaxed, "fun adventure" vibe for the future adventure island. And the animators are finally free from the torture of drawing Kaido's scales (and the kimono design patterns) so they're in a relaxed mood having escaped wano 🌞 and entering "the cool future where zoro has long legs and wears dove shoes" 👢✨
-(letter cont.) "..Also, about a certain change in Law! What will happen to his voice? It's an interesting future!"
Kamiya: Well, I just finished recording that. My voice is still cracking 😎 *nonchalantly continues reading*
Nakai: is it okay to spoil like that??
(fr Kamiya would not share Law's role with ANYONE even if he turns into a woman huh)
And that's it for the highlight!
#what i got is that kamiya san came to the studio to voice Law's upcoming episode and that's why mugiwara space was decided to air today 🤔#my translations#trafalgar law#one piece#trafalgar d. water law#roronoa zoro#monkey d. luffy#charlotte linlin#big mom#eustass captain kidd#eustass kid#egghead arc#one piece episode 1089#one piece anime#one piece manga#one piece 1066#one piece 1062#one piece king#kazuya nakai#hiroshi kamiya#female law#female trafalgar law#one piece translations#mine#my translation

My Hero Academia: The Movie You’re Next & World Heroes’ Mission Review
I went to see MHA : You’re Next and just got out of the cinema. Today is the first day of its release where I live. I’ve been meaning to write a review of the most recent theatrical release (‘Movie’ from here on), World Heroes’ Mission for a while, so I guess I’ll combine them together here.
Before going into the review, I’d like to first outline the structure of a typical movie adaptation of major action Anime franchises (e.g. One Piece, Bleach, Naruto etc.) These adaptations follow similar patterns : there is an Incident, which is caused by Movie!Villains, and which somehow involves Movie!Allies. The main cast, usually the Lead Character, will team up with Movie!Allies to defeat Movie!Villains in order to restore peace. Usually, these adapted universes will not have an impact canon timeline, but can occur as a result of canonical events. It is important to note that the seiyuus behind Movie!Villains and Movie!Allies significantly influenced the plot, namely the nature of the Incident. It is also my personal theory that the production companies created the Movie around whichever seiyuus/celebrities were rising in their career at the moment, since they are the major factor in the success of its release.
For someone who prides myself in being a lover of adaptations, I will say this : all theatrical adaptations are boring because they are predictable. They obsessively follow this same structure without deviation. Any creativity was limited within these frames. I wish the production companies would come up with a new pattern already. The only entertaining factor then, for me, is how the plot evolves within these constraints.
Thus, I’ll analyse these 2 Movies based on the portrayals of the following elements : 1) Movie!Villains & Movie!Allies ; 2) the recurring cast and 3) the Incident.
Should I even put a spoiler alert tag? I mean, we all know how it ends. But well, for etiquette’s sake, here it is : SPOILERS BELOW.
Movie!Villains & Movie!Allies
WHM :
Ally - Rody (CV : Yoshizawa Ryo. Yes, the actor),
Villain - I forgot his name (CV : Nakai Kazuya. That’s Zoro and Hijikata-san for you.)
YN :
Allies - Giulio (CV: Miyano Mamoru) & Anna (CV: Nukumi Meru. Who is this girl, I’ve never heard of her before?)
Villain - Dark Might - (CV : Miyake Kenta, also the voice of All Might)
YN is a typical love story with a happy ending. I understand why they cast Mamo. When I first saw the announcement, I even went ‘Wow!… but why Mamo?’. Mamo gave his Tokiya-type performance, namely the cold yandere character. It’s not bad, of course. It’s just what you’d expect of Mamo. However, it didn’t really add any value either. Any newcomers could have done an equally good job (for the billing of fewer zeros as well, I’d assume). Maybe they cast Mamo only for promotional purposes? I don't think that's the case though, considering the popularity of the existing cast... The casting for the female Ally, however, was a very interesting choice. Apparently she’s a rising model and talent. I quite enjoyed her performance. She brought something fresh to the performance of household names. I did feel fed up with the damsel in distress plot though, and I wish she’d have more lines. Such a waste of potential. As for Dark Might, I kind of understand if what they were trying to do was make homage to Miyake Kenta. But wait, he wasn’t that senior in the Japanese show biz either… I don’t know, now.
WHM was probably one of my most favourite theatrical adaptations across franchises in recent years, mostly because of the casting of Yoshizawa Ryo. I’m a big Ryo fan, sue me. I think the casting choice was very interesting. One of rare celebrity casting in Movie history. And a very successful one at that, I’d say. Rody has remained one of the well-loved non-canon characters by fans even to this date, judging from fan engagements on Pixiv and other media. Bones really made the right move with this casting, honestly. Which was why I was a bit surprised when they went back to casting a big-name seiyuu like Mamo for WHM’s successor. They could have done better… Or maybe that was why they cast the model girl? Anyways… Rody’s character was very fun, and I think it fit Ryo’s acting. And when Rody’s quirk was revealed, I was like, now that’s awesome! More on this under ‘the Incident’.
Nakai-san’s casting was more likely an honorary role, I think. He didn’t degrade nor improve the villain character. I only recognized his voice upon my rewatch, though. Maybe I hadn't been paying enough attention? But I have to say, this Nakai villain was really hard to defeat. Or maybe because Izuku was up against him alone? When Dark Might was defeated by Izuku, Shoto and Bakugo, I was like, that’s it? Why was he so easy to defeat? Nakai-san took like hours to go down.
The recurring cast
I suppose there is no need to list them out here — we already know them.
So in both YN and WHM, the spotlight was mainly on Izuku, which was typical of Movie adaptations. I have to say that I enjoyed his interaction with Rody more than Giulio though. Maybe because of the road trip, which was very gay? I have to say I really enjoyed the Portuguese setting in WHM more than the Italian setting in YN, as well (also me: currently living in Paris). And I liked how they sequenced the battle cuts for Bakugo and Shoto in WHM. Their fights were very passionate, even if the big three didn’t manage to get to fight alongside one another. In YN, it was just Shoto mostly getting pulled around by Izuku’s Black Whip. Like, Shoto baby, what’s going on!? Get your shit together already! Just kidding. I love you my baby Shoto. Also, I like how Endeavour, being the No.1 hero, had stepped up and took the wheel in WHM. In YN he was mostly delegated to supporting All Might and the mission.
One thing has been bugging me: what happen to Be-san in these Movies!? Bones, what on earth is going on? Why didn’t you let Eraserhead say a line at least!? In WHM, even Present Mic (CV: Yoshino) managed to get 1 line in. Be-san didn’t appear in any of these Movies. Although Be-san is not my main, I’d really like to understand why.
The Incident
WHM : some guy (CV: Nakai Kazuya) decided to terrorize the world with science. Honestly I already forgot the plot.
YN : some Italian mafia guy who was obsessed with All Might decided to become him (‘Dark Might’) and terrorize the world.
To be honest, the Incidents are very insignificant. They’re interchangeable and just something that brings elements #1 and #2 together. The last Incident in recent theatrical adaptations that left an impression on me was One Piece Film Red. I really liked how they confronted Shank’s daughter to the recurring cast. However, the execution was mediocre. So as a theatrical release, OP Film Red was more or less on par with the rest of any Movie adaptations, that is, unmemorable. But I digress here.
In YN, there’s this girl Anna, who had Quirk-enhancement quirk. She was usually together with her butler Giulio, who got recruited because he had Quirk-suppression quirk. (Ah, a match made in heaven…) Somehow she got abducted by this random mafia guy who had Alchemy quirk, and who intended to use her as amplifier for him and his army. The mafia guy used her power and transformed himself into Dark Might. The Good Guys™ managed to rescue her eventually, thanks to the help of our recurring cast. In the end, Anna and Giulio both lost their quirks (I think?), but decided to stick together anyways.
Now, my only gripe about this is: they could have embellished several aspects of this Movie. For example, they could have made it an outright love story. Since it is a love story, after all. Giulio’s prosthetics were another thing they could have worked with more. I really liked the imagery of Giulio, who had lost so much, but who still dragged his semi-handicapped body to go after Anna. And Anna shouldn’t have been reduced to a typical damsel in distress waiting to be rescued either. Give her more agency, man! She really had cute design and promising voice actress. The assets were all there.
Also, there was the question of the clash of ideologies. Our main three each managed to get a line in on this subject, but the film could have expanded on this further. That said, I found a lot of similarities between Dark Might and Movie!Villain in One Piece Film Gold (what’s his name again? Grand Tresoro?) Wait — I went and looked him up. Couldn’t believe that the voice of Gild Tesoro was Sakurai, what on earth… — their design, motivations, and goals were very similar. They even used gold coins as weapons. Giulio and Anna didn’t have anything to say about this ideological clash either. Did it not concern them, their living in Italy and not Japan? Theirs was a personal struggle, which had nothing really to do with the Incident, except Anna happening to possess the quirk that Dark Might needed.
As for WHM — a shameful waste of potential. Bones had created truly awesome Ally and Villain in Rody and Nakai-san. But the way they told the story kind of ruined it. Rody and Nakai-Villain were polar opposites, a mirror image of each other. The Villain — whose name I couldn’t be bothered to look up. I only remember that he had blue face — was born with a quirk that repelled everything around him. His quirk was also autonomous, meaning he couldn’t turn it off no matter what he tried… As a result, he couldn’t receive hugs and kind touches from his loved ones, among other things, which made him a bit psychotic. As such, he felt isolated from the rest of the world, and ended up wanting to dominate it. As his polar opposite, Rody was born with a quirk that he was understandbly ashamed of and a quite useless one at that… the bird Pino, which would always express his true emotions. Like the Villain’s, his was similarly autonomous. The nature of Rody’s quirk was revealed towards the end of the Movie, in a cut where Izuku reminisced and said something along the line of ‘Isn’t it amazing, your quirk being not being able to lie?’ Along with this revelation, the Villain’s origin story was also shown. Both the Ally and the Villain had quirks which they had no control over. It also raised the following question : would they rather not have quirks at all, than to have the quirks that they were born with? It was Izuku who broke through their walls and made them appreciate what they had, in one way or another. And the most meaningful thing was the fact that Izuku, the one who led them towards the answer, was quirkless to begin with. I called it a shameful waste of potential, because the studio could have confronted Rody against the Villain directly and highlighted these problematics. That said, Rody remained my favourite Moive!Ally of all times. Firstly, because of Ryo. But most importantly: in a world where most people are born with special abilities, capable of amazing things, you alone are not being able to lie and have to live with this fact. Isn't that beautiful?
WHM had so much potentials. It could have turned out better, more memorable, becoming a breakthrough even, if not for its structural contraints. However, Bones did what they could within these limitations, and still managed to deliver something captivating. After seeing YN, I’m quite relieved that it didn’t manage to top WHM (at least for me), but also disappointed, that the studio went back to their preconceived formula again. To conclude, YN was just your average shonen theatrical adaptation, no more, no less.
Also, Burger King France did a MHA collab this autumn. Here's their goodies!

Main character voice claims
((So I've been busy on the background, building the characters' profiles and whatnot and part of that is delving into finding voice claims for everyone. Finding English ones are a little tricky as I am more at home in Japanese, so right, a lot of characters only have Japanese voice actors assigned to them.
Duke - Chō - Mostly known for Brooke from One Piece, but I personally think Mogamett from Magi is more fitting. You can listen to his voice here!
Slate - Kazuya Nakai - Zoro from One Piece or Mugen from Samurai Champloo. Listen here!
Lucky - Yasunori Matsumoto - Jean Havoc from the first FMA anime or more specifically, Charlie Airstar from Rockman.EXE. Listen here!
Bright - Hirata Hiroaki - Sanji from One Piece or more specifically, Keith Flick from B The Beginning. Listen here!
Peony - Akira Ishida - Yunan from Magi. Listen here!
Chip - Kaji Yuuki - Eren from Attack on Titan or more specifically, Alibaba from Magi. Listen here!
Silly - Ishihara Kaori - Aladdin from Magi. They may not talk out loud a lot, but they do have a voice <3 Listen here!
Destiny - Michiko Neya - Riza Hawkeye from the first FMA anime or Queen Otohime from One Piece.
Fate - Shotaro Morikubo - Sharrkan from Magi. Listen here!
Turmoil - Ryuusei Nakao - Caesar Clown from One Piece. Listen here!

Ghost of Tsushima is such an amazing experience - holy shit! Easily one of the most beautiful open-world game out there. It looks great in colour but the Kurosawa mode with 4:3 aspect ratio is far more immersive(subjective), having played the whole game in black and white made me realise how much we take colours for granted especially in modern games mostly for guiding the players, like the yellow paint smeared on the rocks and ladders, it's surely effective and easier but in b/w where only values are visible- it's a whole different thing, I found myself to be far more attentive towards the game world, scouting ahead rather mindlessly dashing from one coloured object marker to another also, of course, the game's usage of natural forces to guide the player was refreshing to see. Of course, I might be biased cos it's Kurosawa, b/w and the fact that Jin is voiced by Kazuya Nakai voice actor of Hijikata Toshi and Roronoa Zoro, but I think more games should have creative filters like this.
Also have to say- pretty great port and writing(more like selecting a spot and clicking a button) haiku is weirdly fun.

I'm trying to get 3 seiyuu predictions right
I predicted Mitsuki Saiga for Yelena (AoT) and was right
I predicted Mamoru Miyano for Douma (KnY) and was right, though, to be fair, 99% of the fandom did too
I'm manifesting Yoshimasa Hosoya (Reiner, Arthur from Banana Fish), Kazuya Nakai (Zoro, Mugen) or Takuya Eguchi (Akihiko from Given, Hanma from Tokyo Revengers) for Toji.
We'll see...

Ghost Game Episode 3: Scribbles!
I love how Ruri isn’t worried about the red scribble at all, god I love her
Ooooo she does piano! :O Oooh she’s really good!
HER HAND’S DISAPPEARING? :O
That’s PicoDevimons VA laughing-- I heard he came back to voice someone in this episode and man, he was easy to recognize once you heard him. Oh I’m so happy to hear his voice lmao
Ooooh god that hair is oddly creepy
It’s so refreshing how we haven’t even really seen Hiro and Gammamon this episode, like. IDK watching The Taichi Show got oddly tiring, and while I fucking love Hiro and Gammamon, it’s nice to have an episode that isn’t devoted to the main character exclusively (I mean Hiro still has PLENTY of time to appear here lmao BUT SO FAR SO GOOD)
Aww, Ruri, baby ;m;
HIRO! Appeared just at the right time!
GAMMAMON, BABY! OH HOW I MISSED YOU
ANGORAMON JUST FOLLOWING RURI AROUND LMAO
Angoramon... Totoro Energy...
WHO’S THAT VOICE-- hold I need to check that, somehow he remind me of Zoro’s VA (aka Gaomon)-- WAIT IT IS HIM HOLY SHIT, IT’S RORONOA ZORO (aka Nakai Kazuya), HOLY SHIT I THOUGHT I WAS JUST LOSING MY MARBLES LMAO
God I already love Angoramon so fucking much
(^Gamma) Mood
Kiyo, you are so pathetic I love you
Dracumon is such a little shit, I love him
NOOOO DON’T HURT THE BABY
OH SHIT WHAT’D YOU DO TO HIRO
OH SHIT
I would kill a man for Angoramon oh my god I love you so MUCH YOU’RE TRYING SO HARD, BUDDY
ANGORAMON YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO DO HARD ON HIRO, JESUS (I know he’s getting used to being materialized)
HE’S TAKING DRACUMON’S EYES, JESUS THAT’S KINDA, GROSS
God I wish that were me
THAT WAS A CUTE EPISODE, like, god, I’ve barely known Angoramon for 10 minutes and I already love him so much, thank you for the cute partners Ghost Game
NEXT EPISODE! PUMPMON! HELL YEAH HALLOWEEN RIGHTS

Samurai Champloo Pachinko (and MORE FUUGEN CONTENT?!)
This shocked me. When I thought I’d exhausted all Samurai Champloo content available and then found something...and to think, it’s voiced by the actual cast… Well frankly, I was blown away.
In Japan, gambling is illegal. The exception to this is “Pachinko parlors”. Pachinko is a slot machine style arcade game, with mechanics kind of like pinball but not exactly. It is accompanied by flashy lights, movies, anime and videogame cutscenes etc. In Japan, if it’s pop culture, chances are there’s a pachinko machine out there about it.
And boy, the Samurai Champloo one did not disappoint. The amount of references to the source material is immense.
Here are some links to the videos of the Samurai Champloo pachinko! You will repeatedly see the same scenes play out, as these are repeating modes of gameplay, that depending on how you score, will offer different results, and different variations of the same cutscene!
Example: Jin fights a group of ninja. If you score high, Jin kills them. If you score low, Jin is injured.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 4 (cant find Part 3)
Another Video of More Scenes
And now...here are the Fuugen things I have the need to point out.
Mugen Saves Fuu From Ninjas
The three levels to this are if you score low, Mugen crashes into a wall (there’s a chance Baseball Dog will hop out of the wall too), medium is Mugen saves Fuu alone. High is Jin shows up and they save Fuu together.
There is no sequence of Jin saving Fuu alone, without Mugen... So accurate to the anime.
Link to Mugen saving Fuu alone.
Link to Mugen and Jin saving Fuu.
“Tasukete Mugen!!” “Save me Mugen!!”
“Nanda!?” “What?!”
Here, if you fail, Mugen will crash into the wall to his left (with a chance at Baseball Dog appearance). If you succeed, he will continue in pursuit.
“Joutou da!” “Bring it on!”
Look at that look on her face as she holds her heart. Adorable. She also says. “Sugoi!!” “Amazing!!”
If Jin shows up...
Mugen Returns to Fuu at the end of Episode 9
Link to the sequence.
So there seems to be a rewind function. You can rewind parts to aim for a higher score. Here, Mugen doesn’t show up, just like what actually happens in the anime. However, it is rewound, and Mugen ends up arriving. So this is probably a higher score.
“Aaah!”
“Matasete tana!” “Kept you waiting, huh.”
He. Came. Back. They animated it and Kazuya Nakai voiced it. Omg. Is this Fuu’s fantasy?!
Fuu and Mugen Play Taiko Drums Together
Link to Scene
There appears to be three levels to this, depending on your score or luck. Low is Fuu alone. Medium is Mugen and Fuu. High is Fuu, Mugen and Jin.
There is no scenario where Fuu plays with only Jin or Jin plays with only Mugen.
For some reason, during the taiko drum sequence, if Jin joins, he doesn’t get a close up shot and Momo is instead shown.
Other Funny Scenes
Jin goes fishing and Mugen and Fuu cheer him on! Scoring low wins him a sandal. Scoring high gets him a giant fish.
Mugen’s hand is on his shoulder, congratulating him. How cute.
I will not merely be biased and say there’s only Fuugen content. There IS a sequence of Mugen trying to molest Yatsuha as well...
But on the flipside, here is a cute image of Yatsuha leaning on her partner Hankichi’s back! (Not many people notice he was upset she wanted to marry Mugen).
Manzou the Saw has to escape a barrel with either Baseball Dog or Luigi hanging out and supporting him.
Momo also gets mini games too! There are many other sequences I didn’t mention, so be sure to check out the full videos for more, linked at the top of the post, or even search for more! (Though, to find these, I had to look up Samurai Champloo in Japanese, rather than English) There seems to be multiple versions of Samurai Champloo pachinko, aside from this one.

I Finally Watched Fire Force.
Well…four episodes worth.
Right off the bat, I feel like it needs to be said that Fire Force is a good show. I don’t know about y’all but before I had even really looked into the show I only saw negative reviews and complaints. I’m all about giving a show a fair chance so I was keen on watching this regardless of the reviews. Here are my thoughts…
Honestly? The show didn’t have to go in like that the first 3 minutes, yet as soon as it began they had already grabbed my attention. Per usual, we were being introduced to our main character and as someone who didn’t read the manga or much about the show before beginning, I was Intrigued. The OP was dope as hell and I loved watching it, usually with Shounen the OP gives way a bit of the plot but in this case it focused more on the characters and their abilities. Already I was obsessed with the art style and the way everything was animated, the fights looked absolutely beautiful and the angles used only added to how dynamic everything was. I have high expectations for the rest of the show.
The show continues and we are introduced to some phenomenal characters that follow some of my favorite anime tropes.
First up, Captain Obi and Lieutenant Hinawa. My first anime was none other than One Piece so I’m quite familiar with the stern and gruff second in command and the happy go lucky leader this trope follows. I’m more than happy to indulge it though, even with this acting as the basic guidelines for the two’s dynamic they have so much more depth than one would think. Speaking of One Piece I just had to point out the Captain Obi is voiced by none other than Kazuya Nakai, the man who also voiced Roronoa Zoro from One Piece (and Hijikata from my fave Gintama). All in all I’m excited to learn and see more of these two, like compassionate male characters?? We LOVE to see it.
The other two characters, Fire Soldier Maki and Priestess Iris, participate in a trope one could say has been reversed. I don’t want to spoil too much, because I will say little twists and comedic moments like these ones are part of the show’s charm. I wouldn’t want to deprive y’all of that. They’re both tough female characters though and I am for sure a fan of that, just barely into episode two I could see how multifaceted they were and again, I am looking forward to seeing more from them.
Our main character is baby. That’s it, that’s that on that and I don’t want to hear not one argument. Shinra is probably the most likeable Shounen Protagonist I have seen in a while, as far as I’ve seen their isn’t really a notable flaw that would piss people off enough to hate him; e.g. Deku being a “crybaby”. Of course all characters have flaws, and little by little his are starting to shine through. Even so he acts as a great protag and has already defined himself as a rather strong and capable character. His smile is…myfavoritethinginthisanime and a very stealth oddity to give to a character that otherwise looks plain. Kinda feel like that says a lot on his abilities and who he is as a person.
A frenemies relationship has already been established and I’m a SLUT for those, introducing Shinra’s main frenemy and resident dumbass, Arthur Boyle. Introduced, I was prepared to hate this character, he was pompous, arrogant and irritating in every conceivable way. Much to my surprise I don’t hate him and I’m finding it impossible to do so, he’s adorable and a gem to say in the least. I have a soft spot for dumb characters but he may be my favorite type of dumb, it’s little things that make his idiocy known.
As of episode four we’ve been introduced to some new characters and I can only assume there’s more to come. Though this is happening quickly I can only say I enjoy the pacing, it provides a sense of urgency fit for the show. Villains have formally been introduced, and as of right now they are phenomenal in that you want to hate them but you’re curious and amused all the same. Shinra’s suspicions coming to light and the entire circumstance surrounding that makes for great entertainment and all in all a great catalyst for the show. I really appreciate how this anime transitions from comedic and a bit slow to fast paced and suspenseful. I saw a comment on Crunchyroll saying “[because] the show can’t decide whether it’s juvenile or morbid the show suffers for this” but I have to completely disagree. I gotta say, that’s a load of hooplaah. PLENTY if not the majority of great anime/manga teeter between serious and comedic, and this one just adds to the list. Along with this the show itself steers far from morbid, I can honestly say BNHA was more morbid than this.
Anywho, as of right now it’s paced fairly well and I enjoy the fact they introduced major plot points (whether blatantly or not) in these first 3 episodes.
The show so far, is a hit.

[ENG] Mukanshu Character Guide
A quick guide to the main cast that appears in the story.
Mostly for my own reference, but I figured it may be helpful.
Most information taken from the JP gamerch page
*I’ve partially translated the profiles, up until the points that concern the main storyline.
*Information on their source material is largely gathered from wikipedia and some quick google searches, not any sort of deep academic research on my part. Please correct me if I’ve misinterpreted anything.
Name: Ryoku (緑)lit. Green
JP CV: Kobayashi Yusuke (小林裕介)
CN CV: Ma Yufei (马语非)
Illustrator: sairin (再臨)
Source: Legend of the Condor Heroes: a weapon used by the Beggar’s Sect in conjunction with the 打狗棒(lit. Striking the Dog with a Stick) style of martial arts/swordplay. This style of fighting was developed through generations who started out having to fight off stray dogs with a bamboo stick while begging in the streets, thus the name.
Profile: The “Striking the Dog with a Stick” style of swordplay has been honed throughout the generations, passed down through the leader’s of the Beggar’s Sect, originating with the use of bamboo sticks such as Ryoku. He’s the type who always puts his friends first, and enjoys helping others simply because it’s the right thing to do. His goal is to try all sorts of gourmet foods during his lifetime-- yet, at the same time, his favorite food remains the Beggar’s Chicken(1). Although he may seem a bit shabby and overly-chatty at first glance, he is surprisingly dependable when the situation demands it. He comes across as openhearted and absentminded, but there is a hidden layer of prudence there as well.
(1):Beggar’s Chicken: see here for the origin story of this chicken dish.
Name: Kinrei (金鈴) lit. Golden Bell
JP CV: Miyata Kouki (宮田幸季)
CN CV: Su Shangqing (苏尚卿)
Illustrator: sairin (再臨)
Source: Return of the Condor Heroes : a weapon used by the heroine Xiaolongnu. The gold bells are strung on a sash and are used to both distract enemies and then stun them by hitting acupressure points.
Profile: A treasure enshrined within an ancient tomb; after living within the tomb for so long he has become alienated from worldly affairs. He is emotionally detached, dislikes conflict, and would prefer to be alone. Occasionally he shows a side of himself that is innocent and naive. Although he feigns disinterest, he is actually quite interested in his comrades but is bad at socializing. He is better at socializing with animals than people. He has a certain kinship with cats, and easily grows attached to them.
Name: Iten (倚天) lit. Heavenly Sword
JP CV: Nakamura Yuichi (中村悠一)
CN CV: Zhao Ling (赵岭)
Illustrator: 毛団小剣剣
Source: The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber: one of the two titular weapons. In the original work, Iten and Toryuu were both forged from one original sword, the Heavy Iron Sword.
Profile: “The powerful and honorable weapon:Dragon Saber; It can slay the Dragon. If the Heaven Sword does not appear, what weapon can go against the saber effectively?” Iten is placed in the same class of treasured sword as Toryuu, although they aren’t seen together much. Atop Mt. Emei, he pursued the Path of the Tao through diligent, isolated sword training; high reaching pines and cypresses lined the steep mountain path to that summit, awash in a great sea of clouds; any who came seeking him out would be obstructed. There have been no visitors to his residence. It is rumored that he has embraced solitude, fervently seeking the apex of swordsmanship and that his mastery of the deepest levels of swordcraft can make opponents quiver before he even unsheathes his sword.
Note: Iten’s profile is......................waxing poetic with whole strings of kanji. I’m gonna beat him up for making me read all that.
Name: Toryuu lit. Dragon Slayer
JP CV: Ono Yuki (小野友樹)
CN CV: Wu Lei (吴磊)
Illustrator:毛団小剣剣
Source: The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber: one of the two titular weapons. In the original work, Iten and Toryuu were both forged from one original sword, the Heavy Iron Sword.
Profile: “The powerful and honorable weapon:Dragon Saber; It can slay the Dragon. Use it to command the world. Who dares to disobey orders?” Named as one of the Legendary weapons, his power is rivaled only by Iten. A supremely powerful sword that has traversed far and wide over many decades, he harbors a greatly concealed secret. He loves to drink alcohol, and seems gives off an air of arrogance; due to his fame, his freedom has been constrained, so there is a side to him that enjoys tempting fate. In his eyes, being deemed a worthy adversary is the highest form of praise. After challenging the world’s strongest sword to a battle, he purportedly vanished. It is rumored that he was seen at the Northern Sea of the Island of Ice and Fire.
Name: Seika (聖火) lit. Holy Flame
JP CV: Umehara Yuichiro (梅原裕一郎)
CN CV: Li Longbin (李龙滨)
Illustrator: sairin (再臨)
Source: The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber: one of the Ming Cult’s treasured artefacts and source of martial arts styles: the Holy Flame Tablets. The Ming Cult resides in the Kunlun Mountains.
Profile:A divine artifact passed down through generations of religious leaders of Manichaeism (1).He exudes a princely aura, as his every action is tinged with foreign flair. He cannot forget the glorious days of the past, however he is no longer interested in seeking power and authority. To him, those bygone days are but a distant memory. He always pretends to not understand the Central Plain’s dialect (2), but the truth is that he’s quite well versed in Central Plain culture. He treats people kindly and has overflowing charisma. Despite this, his true intentions are difficult to grasp.
(1) Manichaeism: an ancient religion, centered around the struggle between good and evil. Read more here.
(2) Central Plain: a major region of China, regarded as a historical epicenter of Han culture.
Name: Seikou (青光) lit. Blue Light
JP CV: Nakai Kazuya (中井和哉)
CN CV: Peng Yu (彭尧)
Illustrator: sairin (再臨)
Source: Return of the Condor Heroes and The Smiling, Proud Wanderer: one of the undefeated swordsmans Dugu Qiubai’s famous swords.
Profile:
An all-conquering sword, who defeated the heroes of the Northern Plains.(1) He’s arrogant, to the point that all others are of no concern to him. A righteous man who believes the world to be brimming with injustices. It is said that: “Heaven and Earth are not ‘humane’ for myriad creatures are taken as straw dogs;wise men are not ‘humane’, too: all people are taken as straw dogs to sacrifice”.(2) He cannot stand the notion of “survival of the fittest”(3) and vows to purge the world of such grievances and rebuild the rules of this world.
(1)Another reference to the script on Dugu Qiubai’s tomb.
(2) This is a quote from the famed text by Laozi, Tao Te Ching. This quote is best explained here:
“Heaven and Earth are not partial. They do not kill living things out of cruelty or give them birth out of kindness. We do the same when we make straw dogs to use in sacrifices. We dress them up and put them on the altar, but not because we love them. And when the ceremony is over, we throw them into the street, but not because we hate them.”
(3) 弱肉強食: from an idiom that reads “the weak are the meat that the strong eat”.
