Hi, Yes, i sadly saw this on Instagram :( I really liked her character in Bloodhounds and it's so sad to hear that she's passed away, and at only 24 years old.

I'm not from Korea, but I have seen a lot in the news and on social media over the past few years about how the public treat celebrities there. I know Kim Sae-Ron had a DUI charge that essentially ruined her career (i believe they edited out her part in the last two episodes of Bloodhounds because of it), but sadly it seems to me as if some Korean celebrities are vilified if they do something wrong, even something trivial. I think a lot of people tend to forget that celebrities aren't Gods; they are human beings just like the rest of us. I've also read that some celebrities have to keep their relationships secret because they receive horrible backlash from fans if they don't remain single.

This is by no means me excusing drink driving, but I understand that the public reaction to her DUI was one of outrage and she was essentially cancelled. While I don't believe details of her passing have been disclosed to the media, I've seen a few rumours that she sadly took her own life.

It makes me think of Choi Seung-Hyun, who plays Thanos in Squid Game. He was caught smoking marijuana and the public was outraged. I believe he tried to end his life due to the horrific treatment he received from the media and fans, but was luckily found and saved. The same goes for Park Sung-Hoon, who plays Cho Hyun-Ju in Squid Game. He accidentally shared a pornographic parody of Squid Game on his social media and received awful messages and comments, despite deleting it only minutes after posting. As a result, he lost out on a lead role in a new series and had to publicly apologise.

We had a presenter in the UK named Caroline Flack, who took her own life because of the awful online hate she received over an assault charge against her boyfriend, for which she hadn't even been to Court yet. I feel like so many cases against celebrities are trial by media now, and people seem to think they can sit behind their keyboards and anonymously say the most horrific things, not realising that actions can have serious consequences.

I understand that if you do something wrong, you need to take responsibility for your actions, but I've seen a lot of cases where Korean celebrities do something minor and are dragged through the mud, and yet others get away with literal sexual assault. The actor Lee Jin-Uk, who plays Park Gyeong-Seok in Squid Game was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2017, and there was physical evidence in the form of bruises etc., but I read that the Judge deemed him not guilty because if the woman hadn't wanted to have sex with him, she would have screamed louder for him to stop... The actor who plays Player 100 solicited an underage woman for sex twice, but neither of these men have seemingly faced any consequences for their actions, and Lee Jin-Uk is hugely successful and models for several international designer brands. Lee Jung-Jae also had two DUI's and was charged with assaulting a woman in the early 2000's, and yet he's incredibly popular.

I just find it really sad that some people have their careers ruined due to mistakes, and yet others seemingly thrive despite the horrific things they've done. I think people tend to forget that actors aren't the characters they play. Once the camera stop rolling, they're just people, like the rest of us.

That turned into a super long rant, but I do find it so sad that so many celebrities are treated so horribly, while other's get away with the most awful things and are yet still seen as God-like.

I just think we all need to remember to be kind to one another. The world is such a cruel place at the moment and no one knows what's happening in other people's lives.

The Glory (2023)

Summary: Years after suffering horrific abuse in high school, a woman begins an elaborate plot for revenge against those who wronged her.

My Rating: 9/10

Pros: Unlike Eve, this was the ultimate revenge show. The ending was surprisingly satisfying for being so dark. The twists never stopped and I was gasping out loud every episode. Just when you think you have things figured out, another bombshell drops. The cinematography is gorgeous and adds so much to the storytelling.

Cons: I'll talk more about this in a minute, but this show is brutal. They do not shy away from showing you exactly what the characters suffered.

Fanfic-ability: 2/10. I wouldn't want to write more about this, or read it.

First I want to say, this show was fantastic. It was a heart-gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller that had more twists than a roller coaster, which is how it felt watching it. I felt the trauma depicted was treated realistically and without sensationalizing it. Even the villains felt authentic, and kept from being cartoonishly evil. Kim Eun-sook did a fantastic job writing this show.

A HUGE WARNING! This show has graphic depictions of violence, abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence. If any of this is triggering to you, please exercise extreme caution before watching. This is one of the reasons I wanted to do this review right away. The abuse is treated with respect and not for shock value, but it is brutal to watch.

It's hard to pin down what I liked so much about this show, considering how difficult it can be at times. But the brutality really did its job of making you want to go on this journey with Moon Dong-eun. Everything she experiences is beyond real yet feels so authentic. I haven't looked into the stories of bullying this show is based on because I know for me it would be overwhelming. It's hard to imagine people can be so cruel, yet the show presents everything so unflinchingly that you can't help but become immersed.

The performances were fantastic, especially from Lee Do-hyun, Yeom Hye-ran, and Park Sung-hoon. They were definitely my favorite performances, and the stories of each of them were able to put a lot of hope in a bleak story. Again, it was hard to watch Yeo-jeong suffering with his father's death or Hyeon-nam victimized by her husband, but it just made their triumphs that much more compelling. I also couldn't help but feel for Jae-joon; even though he was a villain, his desperation for a child was really good storytelling.

I'm sure I'll think of more to say, but this one is going to settle on me for a while.

The Universe's Star;

Woo-Joo yetenekli bir şarkıcı-söz yazarıdır ve Byul-Yi ise bir ölüm meleğidir. Hayranı olduğu çocuğun hayatını alması için gönderilince aralarındaki romantizm dizinin konusu olur. Benim yorumum üçlemenin en pasif ve silik hikayesi buydu. Hikaye anlatmak istediği duyguları anlatabilecek kadar uzun olmadığı için izleyiciye pek bir şey geçmedi. Ama çok da ciddi bakmamak lazım tabi.

Romance Full of Life;

Çok uzun süredir polis memur sınavlarına hazırlanan So In-Sung  8 kez başarısız olmuştur. Buna rağmen hiç neşesini kaybetmemeye çalışır. Kız arkadaşı Wang So-Ra  ise artık onunda ayaklarının yere bastığını görmek ister. Aynı zamanda o da kendi içinde zor zamanlar geçirirken anlık bir kararla ilişkilerini bitirir. Dünyası yıkılan In-Sung  tesadüfen gördüğü  "Hayat Dolu Deney" isimli bir ilaç deneyine katılarak para kazanacağını düşünür.  

Bu hikayenin konusu ilginçti. Tamamen mükemmel insana dönüştüren bu hap ile yapay bir popülerlik kazanan karakterimizin aslında ne istediğini keşfetmesini anlatıyordu.

Queen of Ring;

Benim seriye başlama nedenim ve en eğlendiğim hikaye ise buydu. Aileden gelen genetik bir çirkinliğe sahip kısa boylu bir kız olan Mo Nan-Hee bir gün annesinin sırrını keşfeder. Ailesinde nesillerdir ailenin kadınlarına miras kalan bir yüzük vardır.  Yüzüğü sevdiğin kişinin sana takmasını sağladığında karşındaki kişi seni görmek istediği ideal güzellikte görmesini sağlıyordur. Babası gündüz işteyken yüzüğü annesinden ödünce alan kızımız okulda sevdiği erkeğe dünyanın en güzel kızı olarak görünür. Ancak yakışıklı çocuğumuz Park Se-Gun yüzüğün büyüsü ile yıllar önce karşılaşıp beğendiği bir kızın yüzünü görmektedir. İşte o kız bizim Nan-Hee’nin arkadaşıdır ve aynı okula kaydını yaptırınca işler karışır.

Hikayeler böyleydi. Üçü de yumuşak, kısa, keyifli zaman geçirten tatlı dizilerdi. Çok uzun konuşmaya gerek olduğunu düşünmüyorum. Sıkıldığınızda açıp 10dk bakıp kapatabileceğiniz, küçük bir kaçamak olarak düşünebilirsiniz.

Drama rec masterlist | Drama rant thread (beware of spoilers)

Firstly, I want to start with the warnings for this drama - because this drama is dealing with severe bullying, as well as sexual assault and domestic violence. And Netflix does not shy away from showing everything, and I really mean everything. So if this is something you have a hard time dealing with, this drama is not for you, just trust me on this one. Even I had to look away sometimes, and I’m not usually squeamish.

While this drama was a hard watch, in the sense that it’s so brutal, I really liked seeing the female lead just not giving a single fuck. She does not care if what she does makes is technically wrong - she wants her revenge, and she is going to get it. Don’t get me wrong, she is kind to the right people, but as she states multiple times herself: “I am not a good person.”

And this thing about being either good or bad is such an interesting topic. I think I touched on it in both Vincenzo and Your Honor too - good or bad is not black and white, and Dong-eun is most definitely that grey area where she balances on the edge of both. She never did anything wrong - she is 100% the victim in this scenario - but by choosing revenge, she suddenly becomes a vigilante in a sense, and that requires some morally bad actions. 

The people who help her in the end (and the people she ends up helping along the way, even though she has a hard time seeing that herself) are all victims too, with their own trauma and their own ghosts to deal with. They do not care that they have to join her in the grey zone, because they too have suffered and felt trapped in their own selves as victims. They want to take back their power.

Idk, I just really love dramas that have you rooting for a character who is morally grey, because it makes you think - how far would you go?

And while it is a drama about revenge, it is also a drama about healing - about allowing people to break down your walls and help you move forward to better places. About learning to love and accept yourself for who you are without the trauma casting a shadow over every part of your future.

The actors are phenomenal, absolutely blew me away with their raw emotions all around. Especially the younger actors were absolutely amazing, they must have worked so hard, and I hope they are okay after having to do the very graphic bullying scenes.  

In the end, I just want to mention that - in case you didn’t already know - this series is loosely based on actual bullying cases from South Korea. Bullying in their schools really do get this bad, and it is wild to me that kids are capable of this evil. Bullying should absolutely never be allowed. If you see something, say something. Don’t ever be a bystander.
