What's an adaption that you think is better than the original?

Well the problem here is that I've not seen the originals of most adaptations that I've seen. E.g. Dunno on the Moon (one of the best Soviet animations) is an adaptation of one of a series of children's novels, none of which I read. Similarly for Apothecary Diaries and Frieren for more recent examples. I can maybe guess that the Frieren manga is not as bombastic, but I don't know that.

Sometimes I am familiar with the adaptation and the source material, and because the adaptation is faithful, there's no escaping that it's a bad story. (jjk, mha). Sometimes the source's visual style isn't carried over and the adaptation looks incredibly boring (csm, jjk). Dungeon Meshi is fairly faithful and has a good fusion artstyle, but a lot of micro choices make certain scenes have much weaker impact than in the original (though the skull is a standout), and its early pacing is bad. HTTYD is just barebones inspiration, the two sides of the adaptation divide are incomparable.

Nimona is kind of hard to make comparisons about, but I'd kind of argue that the original comic is more... honest? Ending didn't leave me feeling insulted, at least. (they're different stories)

And to contrast, Fujimoto's Look Back is already incredible, and the movie perfectly conveys it. The movie is incredible, but you can't say it's better than the comic because it is so deeply faithful. They both use their respective mediums to pull at your heart, crush it, and in the end inspire you very effectively. (you should go to the comic store and buy a copy)

Oftentimes a manga has scenes that are lame or boring, and the anime adapts them straightforwardly. Come on! You are giving the story a second pass! If you get to choose what stays and what goes, why are you keeping these lame parts as is? Even just removing them can make it better sometimes.

So I do think more adaptations should try to find ways to make the original story work in the new medium, rather than just copying what's in it, like what shonen adaptations love to do. Chainsaw Man tried by giving it a very different, "cinematic" tone, but because most of it is the same content, it it just doesn't work, it's very incongruent. It should be evident by now that adaptations should seek to convey the tone and the themes of the material they are working with, but really think about what and how to work it. Whether it calls for a rewrite or just highlight something more, or less. It would make for a richer landscape.

So, I don't really know. I am definitely missing some stories here (even excluding stuff from far in the past like Harry Potter), so maybe there is something that I just can't remember. On the whole, though, my experience has been that of watching good shows or movies that happen to be adaptations, and either watching an adaptation or catching up with the original, and leaving unimpressed with the former, with exceptions. (I guess DavidP animation is pretty straightforwardly better than Araki's comic art (Jojo) especially in the first three parts)

Prompt 203

Another Hydra prompt! Because I am enjoying the designs I’ve made lol. And perhaps it’s a bit inspired by @radiance1 ‘s different dragon prompts too. 

So they’ve succeeded! They’ve managed to combine their powers- with a bit of shapeshifting helped along by so many ghost allies- and become a giant duck-you dragon! Well, originally they were going to do something else, but they couldn’t agree on an animal, so dragon it was! 

And how mighty they are! They’re giant, absolutely massive- dwarfing the couple of skyscrapers still in Amity. Damages via ghost attacks and general sparring made it where people really didn’t want to rebuild those types of buildings. 

But anyway, dragon! Them! They’re absolutely stunning! And did they mention powerful? Because boy oh boy, are they powerful. The GIW’s guns do practically nothing against their combined might, and barriers shatter before them! 

The uh, issue is that they erm… can’t turn back. Which is fine, they’ve all sort of outlived most of their generation- thank you possessions and ecto-contamination, it’s just a tiny bit of an adjustment. But really it’s not too bad, and someone needs to stop the GIW from trying to poke their heads into Amity. Like it’s been a solid couple of generations, it’s time to stop, thanks. 

Actually they’ve been a bit quiet. Meh, that surely isn’t a problem. Probably. Honestly they’re all going to use the opportunity to sprawl out where the school yard once was, their favorite place to sun their scales. Huh. Usually more people are around now that they think about it- or really, as Paulina points out, sharpening her fangs on one of the rocks.

How long had they been sleeping, because it couldn’t have been that long. One of them was always awake, they slept in shifts after all! Yet there are things missing now as they patrol the skies, both Wes and Tucker pointing out specific buildings that the others didn’t particularly notice usually that now lay empty. 

Hm. 

Oh. That is a… strong barrier there. A really strong barrier actually. Pfft, they can take it! They’ve shredded every barrier together before- Ow.

Context: the andros are more solemn than usual, wonder why... (also let's pretend Ayana is from a different city or country and she's back in a week)

"Guys!" The loud yelling and the small tapping of shoe soles hitting the floor could be heard.

Oh, right- Ayana was back in town.

Temporarily, of course, but enough to annoy the Andromedas in the best ways possible.

Though... speaking of the Andromedas...

"Hey." Aldryx greeted, halfway through with his assigned chores in the kitchen, which may or may not have been Agoti's job. The younger brother was in his room, deep set in his video game to even acknowledge anybody's presence, frustrated screaming at a screen would be the only thing that could fill the hallways at 9 in the morning on a random Sunday.

"Agoti's in his room, I assume you're here to find him?" Aldryx stood up straight now, wringing the handkerchief over the kitchen sink.

"Oh, yeah. Right. Speaking of which— where's Tabi? I don't hear his screams anywhere," the girl glanced around the room curiously, and indeed, the goat man wasn't anywhere to be found.

"Tabi? Ayana, you haven't heard-"

"Tabi?!" Agoti peeked out from his room, video controller in his hand.

Confusion was etched on Ayana's face, shocked by how Agoti could have had such a sudden reaction to his best friend's name. She assumed it was a prank at first, but registering the genuine glint of sadness and guilt in Agoti's eyes did indicate that this was not a prank in the slightest.

"Yeah, Tabi. You know, goat guy with horns, blue hoodie, your best friend?" Shooting Agoti a targeted glare, clearly irritated by how he had seemed to forgotten about his dear friend.

Something was wrong, clearly.

“I saw him. This morning. He asked me where you were and the usual things. What’s the matter?”

The question made the siblings freeze, seemingly unable to register the pure shock and horror from that. She didn’t know, did she?

“Ayana… that’s impossible.�� Aldryx frowned, his mind whizzing with questions of pure disbelief.

“What? What’s impossible?”

Now everyone’s confused. Worried. Hell, terrified.

“Meeting Tabi. Ayana, um, there’s no exact way to say the news easily—”

“He went against the blue midget, the building he was in? Exploded.” Agoti cut his brother off, clearly ready to share a little more than his sibling, but not enough to clear Ayana’s confusion and doubts.

“Exploded? How? Wait, but he seemed fine when I saw him,” the questions only got worse. How recent was the event, even? Why and how, and where… what?

“It happened just a few weeks ago. There’s no way it’s him if he’s uninjured.”

Great. Now a new emotion added to the mix just from what Agoti just said. Fear.

“You’re forgetting something. Even if he was injured, there’s still no way that the Tabi you saw was the Tabi we know.”

And now suspense. Lovely. Frustration boiled in Ayana’s blood, horror supporting her bones and clearly her patience was being pulled to just a mere thread. She wanted to scream at them for being so mysterious, so cryptic, so… not them.

“Just say it already! What the hell even happened? See, this is why I never should’ve—”

“Tabi’s dead.”
