A MISSING PIECE IN THE BIG BANG THEORY HAS SURFACED??
Blog#411
Wednesday, June 19th, 2024.
Welcome back,
Combining different pieces from Big Bang cosmology could help explain an issue we have today.
The Hubble constant, the speed of expansion of our universe, is not observed with consistency.
These scientists suggest that not-well-understood quantum gravity could account for the gap.
Tumblr media
In research published earlier this year, physicists from the University of Hyderabad in India say they’re on the path to solving one of the universe’s biggest outstanding problems. Since Edwin Hubble realized the universe is always expanding nearly 100 years ago, scientists have used the “Hubble constant” in calculations on virtually every scale in the universe.
But today, estimates for the Hubble constant don’t always align, with a difference of up to 10 percent between calculations made using different methods. (When someone at NASA mixes up meters and yards and loses an entire spacecraft, that’s not even a full 10 percent deviation.)
Tumblr media
The paper appears in the peer reviewed journal Classical and Quantum Gravity. The journal has an ongoing, periodically updated “focus issue” specifically about this measurement tension, and the editors explain the problem there—scientists can’t say for sure that the different Hubble constants measured are actually different, rather than just observation or calibration issues.
But the authors of the new paper, physicist P.K. Suresh and his research fellow (referred to as just Anupama B.) say that most measurements taken now are reliable. Instrumentation only continues to improve—we’ve all seen those generation-defining, poster-quality photos of the far-out planets, for example. If the measurements on the local and faraway levels are indeed sound, then something is missing.
Tumblr media
It’s here where they introduce quantum gravity as a possible factor. This variable—which, to be honest, is another enigmatic “placeholder” in some ways—could close the gap in Hubble constant observations. That’s because, as the authors propose, quantum gravity could have affected the rate of change at which the universe expanded itself. When a constant can have a variable rate of change, it’s easy to see why researchers tend to drop the ‘constant’ label and instead call the fatcor simply H0, H1, and so on to designate which version of the measurement is in play.
Tumblr media
The researchers explain that during inflation—the rapid growth of the universe immediately following the Big Bang—there may not have been a single, uniform inflation zone. Instead, more and more scientists are theorizing around the idea of “multi field” inflation. The idea originated to explain another measurement discrepancy: the number of particles in particular places or times, compared with the massive speed of inflation overall.
Tumblr media
If a theory could help explain one gap in our codified equations for how inflation works, it makes sense to try that theory to find other missing pieces. These researchers used what is called the hybrid inflationary model, which describes two fields: one inflating and one rolling over like a waterfall. By accounting for quantum gravity, they found they were able to reconcile H0—the current Hubble constant—with both H1 (during inflation) and HT (during phase transition). Just one adjusted equation with a parameter for quantum gravity could draw a curve that includes all three data points.

Obey me
Things I would do with each character.
Warnings: bad writing, fluff, ooc I guess. It's just some silly maladaptive daydreaming.
Lucifer
Listen to records. Don't think listening to his cursed ones are possible. Guess he's going to enjoy ABBA. Look I know it won't be his favorite but he will probably be intrigued because of how popular their music is. Use listening to music to have him dance with me. I have a large variety of records. Making out maybe to music. Enjoying a different side to him.
Mammon
Get in on schemes. Love to think of how to scam people but never do because I don't have the time or money. Chaos couple. I'm a hype person and will remind him how amazing he is. Shared adoration. He's my first and favorite. I fell in love almost as fast as he did. That soft personality just for me. He's gorgeous and sweet.
Levi
Have him help me finish every video game I'm stuck on. It's going to be awhile. Using the excuse to make him spend time with me. It'll give him confidence while I tell him how amazing he is at playing games. Nerd out over anime. Share our thoughts and eventually get him to cuddle. Then more as he gets comfortable.
Satan
Cliche but cat cafe. Love it. Get cute snacks and drinks then cuddle with cats. OMG please. Did it once and it was so much fun. Satan would die seeing a cat sleep in my lap almost the whole time. Then getting home letting him pout about not being able to have a cat. Stroking his hair as he lays his head in my lap. Bonus: I'm allergic to cats 😂
Asmodeus
I'm serious about skin care, hair care, and personal style. I would be out shopping and doing so much with him. I adore him. Giving a makeover might not work but I would let him do whatever he wanted and have fun with him. I think doing makeup and hair is intimate. It's a special bond. I don't let just anyone see me changing and telling me fashion or style advice. Sharing the latest tea with him. OMG the bond with him would be so strong. The trust.
Beel
I would have him eat and tell me about how it tastes. I have so many food issues that I just dream of eating these foods. That and tell him he's the greatest in the world. He's the biggest sweetheart ever. I'm such a simp for him. Cheering for him. Making sure he has snacks and carrying snacks with me. Cuddles with snacks while watching movies. Have to have a snack while watching movies. I can't watch without snacks.
Belphie
Stargazing while snuggling. I just want to lay in bed all day and enjoy the softest blankets, mattress, and pillows. And having such a handsome brat of a demon. So much cuddling. Playing my switch or reading. Slow kisses while running our hands over each other.
Diavolo
Take him to a Renaissance festival. Can you imagine the sheer amount of enjoyment he would have?!? Best dressed couple there. Biggest smile on his face. The excitement. Enjoying Diavolo's affection and relaxing as no one knows who he is. Spending as much time there as possible. Being able to act openly as a couple with no one watching him under a microscope. Finding a place to share some kisses.
Barbatos
Tea. Everything tea. I live in tea. Chai. Masala chai recipe. Bonding over my passion for hot leaf juice. Make him take us to my favorite tea places. (Nimrah bakery old city Hyderabad India). Enjoying one anothers company while sitting together cozy in cafes. Talking quietly with one another out of prying eyes. Stolen kisses and holding hands.
Simeon
Baking!! Work on finding the best gluten free food. I can't have gluten and it's just awful. But I want to bake with him so badly. Decorating cakes and cookies. Helping get icing off his lip. Seeing him blush from that. The debate it gives him.
Solomon
Go to occult stores and hear his opinion. Totally just want to make out with this one. Keep him from trying any magic spells. I just want to hear his interesting thoughts on things. Think he's hilarious. And enjoy teasing him back.

Sanantani Saints
Part 4
Shri Sadhguru Shridhara Swami
The saint I am about to share details about is very close to my heart. Many people in my district worship him as a great Guru. I chant his name and have visited his samadhi several times. He is my Guru and has guided me during difficult times. My grandfather's family was fortunate enough to receive his blessings. Many members in my family including my father tell the tales of Miracles he performed near our hometown. The most fortunate part is that he resided near my hometown on several occasions and blessed many people. Below are some excerpts from the internet. He is the one I remember on Guru purnima everytime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Early life:
Shri Shreedhara Swami Maharaj was born in a Brahmin family to Narayan Rao and Kamalabai Deglurkar on 7 December 1908 in Lad Chincholi, Karnataka. He was born on Datta jayanti in the evening when the chariot carrying Guru Datta was passing by the house. He was born as a boon given by Adi guru Dattatreya to his parents, as they prayed to adi guru Dattatreya to be born as their child. He was a devotee of Lord Ram and a disciple of Samarth Ramdas. When Shreedhara Swami was 3 years old he lost his father and thereafter his mother and elder brother Trimbak took care of the family. Young Shreedhara was admitted to a school in Hyderabad for his primary education. Since the very early days he was spiritually inclined. One recorded incident from his early childhood is as follows: He had once fallen very ill and had lost a lot of days at school because of it. Thus he feared that he might fail in the examinations. His mother then told him to constantly chant the name of Lord Ram and that he would see him through the exams. He solemnly started doing that so much so that he finally did not do any studies at all and all the time chanted the name of Ram. On the day of examination he went without reading anything and to the surprise of everybody he answered every question so nicely that he did secure first rank. Shreedhar Swami's elder brother died when he (Shreedhar) was just ten. His mother, unable to cope with the shock and prolonged illness, soon followed him. After her death Shreedhar Swami went to Gulbarga to live with his aunt and continued his education there. After spending a few years in Gulbarga, he headed for Pune where he lived in an orphanage for sometime. Here his urge for spiritual enlightenment grew and on the suggestion of one Mr. Palnitkar, he embarked on a journey to Sajjangad with the intent of seeking spiritual knowledge at the place where Shri Samarth Ramdas had resided nearly three hundred years ago.
Awakening:
Sajjangad was the abode of Swami Samarth Ramdas for the last six years of his life. Legend has it that Samadhi stone surged out of its own at the cremation place of Shri Samartha on the very next day of his nirvana. Shri shridhar swami's yearning for a spiritual awakening at this point can be gauged by the fact that he started to dispose all his money to the poor and the remaining he just threw. He liked a particular sweet dish, so he bought it, kept it in front of Lord Ram's idol and then mixed cow dung in it and ate it. Now he could not even think about the dish he once liked so much. On the day of departure to Sajjangad, Which also coincided with Vijayadashmi, he suddenly felt that he was going there to find out the creator of the universe who had control over the living, nonliving things and also time and space. After one and a half years of having arrived at Sajjangad, Samarth Ramdas himself blessed Shreedhar Swami. Later, he directed him to go south to Karnataka and spread the real message of Sanatan Vedic Dharma.
Religious revival:
For the next thirteen years, Shreedhar Swamiji toured most of south India on foot. He used to halt at temples and Mathas where he would deliver discourses on Sanatan Vedic Dharma for religious upheaval. During his travels he made acquaintances with many other well known Hindu religious leaders and saints. The most significant of these was with Sivananda Swamiji of Shigehalli. He also visited the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and performed meditation there. In 1942, Shreedhar Swami took Sanyas at Shigehalli and was accorded the title, 'Shreemat Paramhans Parivrajakacharya Bhagwan Shreedhar Swami'. After this till 1967, he extensively toured all over India and through his speeches, writings and spiritual initiatives, spread the core messages of the Vedas among common people. He, returned south to Varadapura in 1967 where he set up an ashram. He practised, held Hindu exorcism in various holy places, temples including Kolgibis (Kumta road), to drive ghosts, spirits out of any hosts body they have taken over, using his mantradanada staff. Shreedhar Swamiji was a gifted composer and fluent in Marathi, Sanskrit, Kannada, Hindi and English. All through his extensive travelling, he managed to spare some time for religious writing. His aim was to simplify the complex nuances of vedic teaching into a form that would be easily digestible to the common man.
Final days:
On the first day of the second half of the first month of the Hindu calendar, Swamiji's health deteriorated. The disciples again pleaded for bringing a doctor, but Swamiji again refused and told them that Samarth Ramdas had told that the bodily pains should be considered as pleasures. He enquired what day was the next one and when told about that he knew that it was a day for very auspicious things, but didn't tell it to anyone. Then as usual he took bath thrice, had a little milk and rested for a while in the night and spent the rest of the time in sahaj Samadhi avastha. Swamiji got up the next morning at 5 am. After the morning chores he sat in meditation for a while. He came out of the meditation room at 8 am. The disciples requested him to have some milk, to which he agreed and again sat in meditation. Swamiji in sitting position and in meditation twice said 'Om, Om' and then from the upper side of his body through the head he made his soul leave his body to be eternally unified with the Parbramha. Despite this his posture didn't change nor did his facial expressions. In fact the aura around his face became brighter for a while. This was at 9 am on 19 April 1973. After a while Swamiji had attained the Ultimate Samadhi.
Below are some his recorded pravachans:

The woman who was found murdered in her Redmond apartment had recently moved to the area and loved to ride her motorcycle and was, according to her supervisor at a Bellevue software-development company, "a shooting star."
Arpana Jinaga was a 24-year-old software-quality engineer from India who was building a circle of friends, exploring the region on her motorcycle, and reveling in the freedoms the United States had to offer her. She had attended Rutgers University, won an international software award, and was a rising star at the Bellevue company she worked for. Described as outgoing and friendly, she would try anything just to say she had attempted the experience. She had, on a whim, joined a motorcycle club after seeing a woman riding one on the street. She practiced Tae Kwon do, volunteered at an animal shelter and fire department, and she'd done all of this within only eight months of moving to Redmond, Washington.
Tumblr media
From the Indian town of Hyderabad, Arpana's father was a professor of computer engineering and her mother a homemaker. She was close with her younger sister Pavitra and her family. Growing up, Arpana was creative, enjoying singing, dancing and gymnastics, described by everyone as a girl with a bright and bubbly personality.
When she was younger she entered a design hardware competition, doing so well, potential universities paid attention. She excelled in computer engineering, and in the specialty of embedded systems. She also sang in a band. When she was 21, in a microchip design competition against thousands of people, Arpana placed top twenty. Each contestant received their own design kit, and Arpana created a communications jammer with hers, attracting even more attention. In 2005, the Indian Express wrote an article about her, entitled "Young Inventors," in which she was interviewed on her love for computers and innovation. She dreamed of being a professor like her father.
Her father encouraged her to apply for the masters program at Rutgers in New Jersey. And she did, traveling to the U.S. to major in engineering. After arriving she began working at EMC as a software quality assurance engineer. In only 6 months, promoted to lead programmer, a testament to her work ethic.
In 2008, she was transferred to a new office in Redmond, Washington, a suburb just outside of Seattle - the tech town where Microsoft and Intendo were started - moving into the third floor of an apartment in the Valley View apartment complex.
Each floor in the complex only had about five or six rooms, but she quickly made friends there. This was when she bought a Suzuki motorcycle and began lessons on driving it and joining the Pacific Northwest Riders, a local motorcycle club. She also volunteered at the Redmond Fire Department and an animal shelter in Bellevue. She loved animals and would speak of one day opening one for endangered animals.
On the eve of October 30, she planned to host a Halloween party at the complex. Each room would have a different theme in the building, and her costume would be Little Red Riding Hood. Over a dozen people mixed with each other and people seemed to enjoy it, and at 9pm, Arpana and her friends were still having fun. She walked the halls with a glass of wine, posing with people for pictures. At around midnight, she had everyone come to her apartment to eat pizza. After that, they all made their way to the first floor and continued the party.
Just before 3am, things started to slow down. Her friend Jessica remembers a conversation they had shortly before they parted ways that evening. Arpana was telling her how lucky she was to be a woman living in the U.S., and how hard things were growing up in India. Jessica tried to tell her that things weren't always so easy in the U.S. either, to which Arpana began to cry, simply stating, "You have no idea."
Still slightly emotional, she retreated back to her own apartment around 3am, alone. But despite her leaving alone, for the next hour, her neighbor reported hearing what they thought sounded like consensual sex. They heard muffled moaning come from her apartment walls.
At 8am the next morning, her neighbor was woken up by what sounded like a growing sound that sounded like either someone having sex, or vomiting, coming from Arpana's apartment, followed by a loud thud - then the sound of running water.
When Arpana's family waited for her phone call that next day, they received no call. They texted her, and received no response. The family called someone they knew to check on her.
This person agreed and went to knock on her door, but surprisingly, the door just swung open. The door frame and the lock had been broken. When he and a neighbor entered the room, there were clear signs of a struggle. They walked into Arpana's bedroom -
and that's when they found her laying face down on the floor, under a sheet, naked, and covered with blood. When authorities arrived, the immediately knew this was a homicide. An overwhelming smell of bleach permeated the room, as if someone had tried to clean up, and Arpana's comforter was in the tub, soaking in water and bleach. Blood was still on it though. The rest of the sheets were missing. Police also found Arpana's tampon, which was presumably in at the time of the attack and was now on the floor of her bedroom. Bleach was on the furniture, and motor oil had been dumped all around the apartment, and around her body.
Arpana's body was taken for an autopsy, which confirmed she had been raped. Unfortunately no DNA was able to be gathered, likely due to a condom being used. She also had blunt force trauma to the head, several of her teeth had been broken, she had bruises on her stomach, thighs and wrists, and her own underwear had been used to gag her mouth. Duct tape had also been placed over her mouth. Death was determined to be asphyxiation, which was done with a bootlace. Her fingers were stained blue with toilet cleaner and she had bleach and motoroil over her from the waist down, as well as small burn marks. It appeared that someone had attempted to light her body on fire but failed, since motoroil isn't flammable. Her bloodstained bathrobe and bedsheets were found in a dumpster outside the apartment. Arpana's ID, her blackberry phone and her digital camera were missing.
Police were suspicious of one of Arpana's neighbors - Cameron Johnson. There were some discrepancies in his timeline to police, and police found printed out maps for pawnshops in his car, printed at 10am, but he claimed he woke up at 10am. He also said he went to Denny's that morning then drove two hours to the Canadian border but wasn't let through because he didn't have a passport with him. When asked about this, he said he was just in the mood to explore. Canadian officials, however, stated that he tried to "blow through the border gates."
One neighbor said he came home at 3am the night of the murder and saw a man at Arpana's door who was between 5'11 and 6'3, with olive skin - a description that matched Cameron - talking to someone in the apartment. But since Arpana's door had been kicked in, it's hard to know if these two incidents are connected.
It was also discovered that someone had been using Arpana's computer at 3:29 that morning.
To everyone's surprise though, the man police ended up arresting was 27-year-old Emanuel Fair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emanuel Fair had been going by the name 'Anthony Parker.' According to Detective Coats, he was looking at photos from the Halloween party, when he noticed Fair, who was dressed as a construction worker, in the background of the photos. He stood out as the only black man at the party. He also appeared to be an outsider. He started sending the photos out to other officers, asking if anyone knew him. Turns out they did - there was a warrant out for his arrest.
Emanuel Fair had a criminal record. He had gang affiliations and had been arrested many times before for various crimes - robbery, gun possession, drug possession - and, what caught Detective Coats' attention - a rape charge.
Only four years earlier, he had been charged with raping a minor, after that minor called 911 and reported it. The 15-year-old reported him violently raping her at gunpoint. When apprehended, he claimed the encounter was consensual, which legally it wasn't, since she was a minor. He took an Alford plea and pled guilty to third degree sexual assault, where the max imprisonment is only five years.
Because he was considered a level 1 offender, he only served two years of his sentence and got out.
There was a warrant out for his arrest because he had broken his probation and failed to update his sex offender status in the registry for the second time.
After he had been released from prison in 2006 he was couchsurfing, and ended up on the couch of Leslie Potts, who lived in same complex as Arpana. Leslie had met Fair over MySpace.
Apparently, Fair and Cameron Johnson had spent a lot of time together at the Halloween party the night Arpana was murdered.
And it turned out that Fair's DNA was found at the crime scene, and specifically, on the duct tape found over Arpana's mouth. His DNA was also found on her neck, and mixed in with the blood found on the robe in the dumpster. He was also interviewed multiple times, and found to have inconsistencies in his story. Leslie didn't see him until the morning, so she couldn't confirm where he was. Also, he claimed to have been asleep between 1 and 2am, but during that time he had made 20 different calls to people. Leslie also said she found an empty condom wrapper on the table that hadn't been there before.
The tape that was found on Arpana's mouth had strands of her hair on it, as well as a lot of Fair's DNA - this meant it couldn't have been transfer DNA, and Fair did touch this piece of tape. It's also believed she was wearing the robe when she was attacked, which is why Detective Coats found it compelling that Fair's DNA was found mixed in with the blood on it. His DNA was also found on toilet paper in the bathroom. Cameron's DNA was on the can of motoroil - an amount of DNA that meant he had at some point physically touched it. A forensic DNA analyst stated that the evidence pointed to Fair committing the crime, and that Cameron might have been apart of the clean-up. Fair's DNA appeared to be the one tied to the crime though.
Fair was charged with first degree murder and rape, and transferred to King County to await trial. Detectives did not, however, have enough evidence to charge or convict Cameron with a crime.
Fair's defense attorneys claimed he was only looked at due to racism. They also questioned the legitimacy of the forensic technology used. This hindered the case going to court for several years, in order for detectives and prosecutors to prove the legitimacy of the technology. At the time it wasn't as commonly used [although now it is]. The DNA technology company refused to give over the source code that ran the program [he didn't want it stolen by other companies], so that held up the case going to trial for years. In the end, it was verified that the DNA technology was very reliable.
Seven years after Fair's arrest, the trial began, but it was a hung jury. They were deadlocked. Another trial was held. Because Cameron was possibly also implicated in the crime, Fair's defense attorneys used that as a cause for reasonable doubt that Cameron could have been the one responsible. This was enough reasonable doubt for Fair to get off. That, along with the fact that Fair's previous rape charge and criminal convictions could not be disclosed in the trial.
This case is still left without a conclusion, as a result.

Meet The Fashion Designer Who Uses Fruits & Flowers To Create Natural Dyes & Shows Others How To Dye Their Clothing
Natural Dyes – Were always the plan
Manya Cherabuddi has always had a thing for bright primary colours. There was a time when she would spend hours in her mother’s garden, transfixed by the beauty of the blooms. She had no idea at the time that she would one day employ garden resources in such novel ways to create Natural Dyes.
Manya found solace and creativity in her mother’s well-kept garden since she had always been drawn to producing art with natural elements.
As a child, she was always collecting leaves and flowers. Manya, a natural colorist in her 30s shares that when she was younger, she had no idea that her passion for the outdoors would one day become her career.
Tumblr media
Manya didn’t keep the skill to herself and instead began hosting classes on how to create natural dyes and colour fabrics. She has attended over 150 seminars and instructed over 5,300 pupils, both young and old, from all corners of the globe.
Manya, who was born and raised in Hyderabad, attended the University of Virginia and earned a degree in both the arts and business. Before beginning to create natural dyes, she worked for almost six years in several firms. The events leading up to this have very little linearity. But she got her business sense from her parents, who both hailed from entrepreneurial families.
She explains, “I wanted a career where I could merge art and business.”
A new Chapter Begins
Tumblr media
Sharing what we got
She made a lot of mistakes, but this way she taught herself. She continues, “I decided to provide seminars because I hoped that doing so would facilitate the education of others.”
Later in 2019, she attended a class on natural dyes at a place called Colour Ashram in Goa, which further solidified her determination to pursue this path professionally.
Throughout the session, she was able to see the topic from a new angle. She learned about the eco-friendliness of natural dyes. People’s usage of chemical colours is bad for the environment and the skin. Most of us don’t give much thought to where the dyes used to dye our linens, curtains, and clothing originate from.
The chemical dyes are damaging to the environment and may cause cancer, but most people don’t have time to stop and think about it. She emphasises that producing natural dyes is a waste-free procedure since even the leftover water can be used to irrigate plants.
Workers in the [chemical dye] sector suffer from health problems, and the area where the dye is manufactured becomes barren and contaminated. She explains that this is a vicious cycle, but that breaking free is attainable with hard work.
Tumblr media
Colors permeate our world, from the clothing we wear to the handkerchiefs we carry. It won’t happen overnight, and she know that, but she still think it’s feasible. Since there are natural alternatives, she constantly wonder why people choose to choose those that are loaded with chemicals.
Natural dyes production is a fascinating and entertaining process. And if enough people use it, it can lessen the tremendous amount of pollution and carbon emission that goes into creating chemical dyes,” she adds, adding that although this was first a pastime, she knew she would have a career in it when she had mastered the art form.
In 2020, Manya began offering classes in ecological dyeing under the moniker “Treehouse.”
Tumblr media
Natural colours, such as haldi (turmeric) or a flower, may aid in recovery from illness. Yet, working with the colours to create them is a really relaxing procedure. She devised a plan she dubbed “Find Your Calm,” which included activities like producing natural dyes to help people relax. People were understandably worried due to the epidemic, therefore the show went over really well.
Seeing the reactions of everyone around her kept Manya going.
“Visiting the park, gathering flowers, and colouring with loved ones is a popular pastime. All the grownups who attended her classes suddenly felt like youngsters. They would be giddy with delight,” she recalls.
Tumblr media
During Holi, she shared the knowledge of how to generate natural colours with others. Manya utilises ingredients found in the kitchen and yard to create her vibrant colours, including turmeric, beetroot, spinach, red cabbage, tomato, and a wide variety of flowers.

Art of Nature
Guest post by Ashwin Lobo
Over four days commencing on the 28th of May, the Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary hosted a workshop called Art of Nature. When Supi first mentioned it to me, judging by the name, I imagined the workshop would involve some form of painting or drawing aspects of the natural world while sitting in a room. But pretty soon I discovered that it would challenge my preconceived notions of both art and nature. Sandy, chief facilitator of the program conveyed his intention in an introductory note to the participants: “For a few days we will explore our relationship with the Earth through the medium of art. Engaging our bodies and with all our senses, can there be a different kind of relating that is not based on previous perceptions and ideas? This is not an art workshop for "art's sake", but rather for addressing something larger; the climate crisis and alienation from the land."
Tumblr media
Annie and Ankita examining an epiphytic orchid
There were 16 participants for the workshop coming in from different places - Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Tiruvannamalai, even as far afield as the city of Panna in Madhya Pradesh. Most of us were engaged with the natural world to some degree in either our professional or personal lives. Many of us were practicing some form of art.  In that sense, we weren’t coming in with a blank slate. But from the get go, we were asked to be aware of the writings on our individual slates, and to put them aside as best we could. To let go of whatever identities we held onto, whether artist or naturalist. As Annie recalls: “Everything about the workshop was unconventional. I used to smile, looking at my unused hiking shoes every evening. We were walking barefoot or in slippers through the forests in leech season! And just like that, hiking shoes were one of the many 'usual' things that was done away with in the beginning of the program.”
Tumblr media
observing the shola conservation area
After breakfast each day we’d set off for a walk, heading down from the Sanctuary towards the river, on the other side of which lay the forest. On a large rock by the riverside, we’d take a pause to prepare our bodies and minds for what was to come. The way we did this was to attune to the place primarily with our sense of hearing. Closing our eyes, we’d listen to the different sounds around us: the flow of the river, the chorus of the cicadas, the croaks of the frogs and the calls of the birds. We’d pay attention to the contact of our bodies with the rock. Whatever thoughts came to mind, we’d try our best to let go, simply staying in our senses as much as we could. In this way, after a few minutes, our minds quietened down. We were now better prepared to enter the forest.
The listening exercise had an undoubted impact on the quality of our presence in the forest. All of us had spent time in wild spaces before, but somehow this felt different. “I have done many walks and hikes in forests but often, looking for wildlife, appreciating the beauty around and/or lost in my thoughts. This program introduced me to feel the forests with all my senses and pay attention to everything happening around. To understand and learn this better, one just had to observe Sandy walking through the forest - it was quiet, deliberative, unobtrusive and attentive”, Annie describes. “I was able to see, listen, and smell everything surrounding me, and not verbalise it to myself to change its meaning”, adds Anjali, one of the youngest participants in the group.
Tumblr media
Uma walking on the forest trail
After walking for a while along the forest trail, we’d stop again at a crossing of the river. Here, Sandy asked us to reflect on some questions he felt would be relevant to our shared enquiry. He also invited us to listen for and share the thoughts that we were holding in our minds. Some questions that came up were: What does it mean to really pay attention? How have we been conditioned to see nature? Do we romanticise nature and see it as something magical? Or do we demonise it and view it as something scary? Can we let go of all this baggage and simply see nature as it is? What is art really, and who is an artist? The emphasis was on holding these questions within and thinking about them on a deeper level, rather than looking for quick or simplistic answers. As Anjali put it: “My stay at the Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary, opened my eyes to various questions that I still hold closely and also showed me that in asking a question, usually the answer lies within."
Tumblr media
riverside contemplation
Holding these questions in our hearts we then proceeded on to the next leg of our journey - the actual making of the art - or so we thought. So far we were all walking together as a group, now came the time for solitude. Spreading us out across different points in the river, Sandy asked us to spend time in our places, watch whether any impulse to make arose, and then to create whatever we felt like.
With such minimal instructions the possibilities were limitless. Materials lay all around us - sticks, stones, leaves, feathers and seeds. And having been invited to break down our stereotypes around what constitutes art, we saw that literally anything we did could be considered artistic. One of us spent a good 15 minutes swinging a stick through the water, watching the ripples that were created. This brought her a deep sense of satisfaction, and isn’t that what the process of creating art is supposed to bring? We also felt a certain trust in each other and after a period of spending time individually, sat together and shared our experiences. There were no real worries about how the rest of the group would perceive our individual pieces of ‘art’.
Tumblr media
walking through the river
Bala recalls his experience of creation: “The art of nature reveals itself in the most unexpected and extraordinary ways, inviting me to relearn how I see the world. Among its many manifestations, interlocking rocks and the stacking eye stand out as captivating examples. Interlocking rocks, creates an awe-inspiring spectacle. These seemingly precarious formations, possibly blasted out of crushing asteroids from ages ago, form an intricate interplay between weight, shape, and frictions, where the slightest shift could disrupt the equilibrium. It reminded me of the delicate harmony and resilience present in the natural world. The innate human desire to create and arrange objects formed the stacking eye. It involved carefully selecting and placing stones, one on top of another, in a balanced and intentional manner. The result is a semi circle of stones, each one contributing to the overall composition.”
One might wonder what the objective of this exercise was. As we discovered there was no single objective, for each of us were placed in different spots along the river, communed with these spaces in unique ways and engaged in such varied acts of creation. But at the same time, there was also the sense that we were coming to a shared understanding. “The act of stacking required patience, focus and a deep connection with the materials, shape and environment. The stacking eye encouraged me to slow down, observe the individual characteristics of each stone and find a fit to harmonise and interlock. To me both the interlocking rocks and the stacking eye prompted me to relearn how to see the world. I saw it as an invitation to shift my perspective, to notice the subtle details and to appreciate the delicate balance that exists”, shares Bala.
Tumblr media
the 'art' studio space
And although on the first couple of days most of us engaged in some sort of material creation, as we became more familiar and comfortable with the forest we were happy to simply spend our time being rather than focusing on any sort of doing. For me personally it was also about a rememberance of human wildness, a wildness which still exists within each of us even after millenia of civilisation.
Tumblr media
Sentamizh and Zara
As I look back through my journal from the final day of the workshop I find a passage which illustrates the inner process I was going through: “Still in our bodies - in our minds - lies the memory of how we were once wild and free. Deep down in our hearts we long to experience that way of being. We need not live with the sorrow of exclusion. No, we can take our place in the dance of ecology. Feel our kinship with the boar and the beetle and the bryophyte. So deeply intertwined in the fabric of life.  Throw your philosophy out of the window. Just be present with the rawness, the aliveness, of the world around you. Perhaps the greatest art is simply being in tune with a place. Back resting against the branch of a tree, eyes softly closed, ears taking in the sounds of the forest.”
Tumblr media
learning about the Sanctuary's approach to restoration
While a large chunk of the wokshop involved  spending time with Sandy in the forest, we also had a chance to interact with the rest of the Sanctuary community and understand it’s history and it’s work. We went for a walk along the 75 acres of the Sanctuary land, observing how the rewilding is ongoing on different parcels that were acquired across various points of half a century of the Sanctuary’s existence. Suprabha also took us on a guided tour of the conservation garden, giving us a glimpse of just what it takes to care for the 2000 plus species of plants, each of which require such unique conditions of sustenance.
Tumblr media
Lali and her team, planting out some impatiens
We also had the opportunity to go for a walk with the Green Phoenix, members of the Sanctuary’s extended community, who engage in a wide range of educational and advocacy work aimed at protecting and renewing the river and forest. “I really enjoyed interactions with members of the Green Phoenix - Jaimon, Saji, Suresh, Pradeep and Balaji. The conversations with them especially brought out hope about environmental conservation through community efforts and reaffirmed the importance of courage and collaboration”, shares Annie.
We spent our evenings chatting with each other, sharing songs, stories and food. One of the biggest highlights was a music concert with Monali, who treated us to an entire hour of her magical voice. Anjali, just about to begin her first year of college, thoroughly enjoyed her first  visit to the sanctuary : “I met some great people through my stay, and had a lot of fun, laughter and music through my interactions with them. I felt that each person brought something different to my time at GBS and I’m very grateful for that. I’ve reached a point where things are going to start getting busy for me, at this stage in my life. However, I know that one day, I will want to visit GBS, just to be with nature, the land and these amazing people once again. So, see you soon!”
