August theme: Coastal
Tropical reef: Bubble-tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor)
Temperate reef: Brown-lined Paperbubble (Hydratina physis)
Intertidal: Carpet Sea Star (Meridiastra calcar)
Sand: Wandering Anemone (Phlyctenactis tuberculosa)
Fun facts under the read more!
Bubble-tip anemone are insanely cool; on top of being host to clownfish, this anemone's physical appearance is affected by the lighting, depth, and other factors. Adults with stringier, more commonly recognized anemone tentacles live in deeper depths where less sunlight falls. Younger animals tend to be found closer to the surface, clustered together with their iconic round tentacle tips.
The Brown-lined paperbubble is an incredible name for a sea snail. Their shells glow red under ultraviolet light and nocturnally hunts bristleworms. Their genus Hydatina is distinct for having a much smaller shell proportional to their brightly colored mantles!
The carpet sea star is an australian sea star found across the southern coastline. They're pretty small, in the 5-10 cm range, but more than make up for that with incredible range of coloration and patterns!
The Wandering Anemone is exactly what you expect and more! Venomous and mobile, at night this anemone detaches from its spot and floats and crawls around looking for prey. It will even climb objects just for a better chance to grab a snack, waving from whatever it's holding onto.

Hero I'm feeling kinda down can you give me some Good Sea Slug Facts
YES OF COURSE!!!!!! lemme see what i got hmmmm
1. the biggest sea slug (as of now) is alpyai vaccaria, which is 39 inches long & like 30 pounds on average!! that’s like 3 babies. this slug is worth 3 babies. also coincidentally they look exactly like i do
that’s just me. that’s what i look like irl
2. you know abt the portugese man o war? like the giant monster jellyfish whose sting can kill people? that thing is so fucking scary (but also rlly cool). a nudibranch called glaucus atlanticus (aka the blue one that looks like a dragon) harvests the stingy bits from man o wars & uses em for their own defenses, which is equally if not much cooler than the man o war itself
3. this nudibranch (hydatina physis) is called the bubble snail. ik that’s not rlly a fact but i love how that sounds. bubble snail.
(also look at their tiny eyes!!!!!!!!!!)
4. there’s an entire genus of nudibranches called phyrilloe, which (kinda) look & swim like fish do!! also they glow in the dark. here’s a video of one swimming
they look a bit like something that would belong at the bottom of the ocean, but apparently they’re all over the place?? they’re just super rare. also they look like this
(which, coincidentally, is also what i look like irl)
