A lot of people don't know the real meaning behind these statues so they vandalize them, b*tch about them being #racist etc. When the image of a black 'footman' with a #lantern signified the home was a stop on the #UndergroundRailroad. These are largely a Northern thing, & weren't commonly found in the South until after #WW2, when northerners moved there & brought this custom with them. The #clothing of the #statue was also #coded. A striped jockey's shirt meant that this was a place that swapped horses, while a footman with a tailed coat meant overnight #lodging/#food, & a blue sailor's waistcoat meant the homeowner could take you to a port & get you on a ship to #Canada. I always laugh when I hear #blackFolks talk about how racist they are, because honestly, the cats who had them were the LEAST racist. 24 hours after authorities arrested #SarahFuray on charges of drug #possession & manufacture charges, the 19 y/o #Texan was safe at home. Inside the bedroom of her College Station apartment police found large amounts of #Ecstasy, #cocaine, #marijuana, #methamphetamine, & an #LSD analogue. They also found packing materials & two digital scales. Following the seizure, Furay was taken to Brazos County Jail, where the evidently unruffled teen smiled for a #mugshot. After posting $39,000 bail, she left. In the days after her arrest, multiple news organizations ran stories focusing NOT on her crimes as much as her “#photogenic smile.” Her picture was coined the “happiest mugshot in #America” & the “jolliest in recent history.” Rather than a #criminal act, her offense was called “an entrepreneurial approach to avoiding #StudentLoan debt." The icing on the cake was news that her father is a “head honcho” at the local DEA office, a fact that was treated more as a potential TV plot line than a damning #fact. But while the #media’s virtual coddling of Furay is a story all its own, it’s demonstrative of an even larger problem: #RacialDisparity in the #WarOnDrugs. The repercussions of reporters classifying a white teenage #drugdealer as “#adorable” are far different than those when #lawenforcement does the same. A story fueled by #stereotypes can offend; an arrest fueled by the same can put individuals in #prisonForLife. There’s no need to use the coddling of a white teenage drug dealer in the news as #proof that racial disparity in the war on drugs exists when there are real life examples of #AfricanAmericans spending their lives in prison for mere possession of $20 worth of #pot. Art Way, a senior drug policy manager at The Drug Policy Alliance, says the 19 y/o likely benefitted (& will continue to) from her #ethnicity & family status. “Furay has posted bond that was likely smaller than what most #peopleofcolor her age would have received, & I’m sure she has private counsel. I'm still sticking with my request. The whole government of #Flint should go to jail and be required to drink, eat and bath in the same water. Thank u @thehushreport ・・・ As the #watercrisis in #Flint deepens, it is becoming apparent that the effects of the lead-infested water are not just a #health hazard, but the situation has the potential of ruining many more lives outside of the poison issue. The water in Flint is undrinkable & it is #contaminated with lead, urine, feces etc. However, the city’s govt continues to charge people for the poison water & then threatening to foreclose their home or take their children if they refuse to pay. #Michigan law states that parents are neglectful if they do not have running water in their home & if they chose not to pay for water they can’t drink anyway, then they could be #guilty of child #endangerment. Flint residents have recently filed 2 class action lawsuits calling for all water bills since April of 2014 to be considered null & void because of the fact that the water was poisonous. Essentially, the residents have been getting billed for water that they cannot use. Recent estimates have indicated that it could take up to 15 yrs & over $60 mil to fix the problem & the residents will be essentially forced to live there until the problem is solved. Despite the fact that the issue is obviously the govt’s responsibility, they have made it #illegal for people to sell their homes because of the fact that they are known to carry contaminated water. Meanwhile, residents are still left to purchase #bottledwater on their own, in addition to paying their water bill. This problem is finally getting national #media attention in Flint, but they aren’t the only city with contaminated water supplies. In fact, a recent report published by The Guardian showed that public water supplies across the country do too. By @thehushreport This is so upsetting and saddening!! The police have learned NOTHING. This keeps happening over and over again because cops KNOW they WONT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. The lack of #accountability and #justice reinforces this problematic and reoccuring violent behavior of #policeviolence, #policebrutality and #policemisconduct. It's not always about #racism but it's always about the #abuseofpower. They know they can get away with this and don't really care. Does the poor man look threatening to you? Does he look like he is resisting arrest? Do the cops look like they're in fear of their lives? Does he look like like he's fighting back? But watch the system & media try and justify this. This was caught on a #surveillance cam not their #bodycams because those are usually almost never even turned on. I'm also sure that they will be found #NOTGUILTY. Nothing to see here. The beating of the man, identified as Stanislav Petrov, occurred early Thursday morning and was caught on surveillance video. In the footage two Alameda County sheriff’s deputies chase a man on foot. As the man slows, one officer tackles him and punches him twice. The second officer arrives and starts hitting Petrov with his baton. Soon both officers can be seen hitting Petrov with their batons. Sometimes Petrov can be seen on the ground and other times on his knees. Once the officers begin striking him, he does not appear to be resisting. Beijing’s neighbors, unnerved over its pursuit of territorial claims, are increasingly cozying up to Washington. A threat of U.S. cyber sanctions looms over Chinese companies. It might seem an ideal time for U.S. President Barack Obama to take advantage of Beijing’s troubles and get tough when he hosts Chinese leader Xi Jinping for a state visit on Sept. 25.  Obama is expected to press Xi on issues that have strained relations between the two countries, but his approach will be tempered because for better or worse the world’s two biggest economies are inextricably bound together. That will mean a difficult balancing act for Obama. He is under pressure to send a strong message to Xi over cyber spying, Chinese economic policies and South China Sea disputes, but he does not want to upend a summit that could set the tone for relations for his last 16 months in office. "The test for Obama is whether he can leave this very important relationship in better shape than he found it," a senior U.S. diplomat said. "And the jury is still out." Critics have said that Obama’s strategy of alternately prodding and cajoling China to play by international rules has yielded little but defiance from Beijing. Calls for a harder line have echoed from Congress to Republicans campaigning for the 2016 presidential election. On Wednesday, Obama sought to dispel any notion that he would be soft on Xi. Speaking to members of the Business Roundtable, Obama warned of "countervailing actions" if China persisted in cyber espionage, said it must not wield protectionism like a "Third World country" and urged China to stop "pushing around" its smaller neighbors. At the same time, with nationalistic sentiment rising at home, Xi can ill afford the appearance of an economically weakened China making concessions to America.
