Charles V’s bravery at the Conquest of Tunis
The Emperor now sent out a detachment under the command of Luis Hurtado de Mendoza, Marquis of Mondejar, who had done much to influence Machua’s design of Charles new palace at the Alhambra. According to Santa Cruz, as the ‘Marquis rode in the vanguard with the cavalry, they were charged by a great multitude of Moors and because the Marquis was such a brave horseman he charged in among them.’ But his men were forced to retreat, ‘leaving the Marquis among the enemy. And, when the Emperor (Charles) saw him…in such peril, he himself attacked the Moors with his lance in his hand, shouting “Santiago!” With such enthusiastic determination that he did not stop until he reached an artillery position where he ran the gunners through with his lance and captured one of the guns.’
