Just a genuinely marvelous, refreshing film. Startlingly self-aware, emotionally mature, provocative, articulate, and an all-around authentic work. It may be my favorite film about "Chinese American-Ness" ever, dare I say one of my favorite films in general. It uses nostalgia as an incisive tool in service of its central critique without compromising its message and participating in the Nostalgia Industry. It understands childhood both with wisdom and compassion and portrays it with all of its uncomfortable messinesses. A truly remarkable film. The fact that it is a directorial debut genuinely shocked me. It is so profoundly artful and tenderly constructed.
