HUNGARIAN FOREIGN MINISTER SLAMS U.S. ORDERS TO RATIFY SWEDEN'S ADMISSION INTO NATO

Hungary's Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, slammed the United States Thursday for giving orders to Hungary demanding the Hungarian parliament quickly ratify Sweden's admission into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Speaking on Wednesday, U.S. National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, warned the Hungarian authorities that American patience has its limits and that Washington is waiting for Hungary to ratify Sweden's ascension into NATO.

In response to Sullivan's comments, Szijjarto dismissed U.S. concerns and slammed Washington for interfering in Hungarian affairs, telling reporters with Russian news agency Ria Novosti, "First of all, I want to be clear: everyone must understand that Hungary is a sovereign country. And it is not only that everyone must understand this, but that everyone must respect it. Regardless of whether it's a superpower of the East, a superpower of the West or any other country, they must respect that Hungary is a state and the Hungarian parliament is a sovereign body," adding that Hungary will never act on instructions coming from another nation.

"These kinds of statements are completely unnecessary, they show disrespect for Hungary. We never criticize US decisions. We never criticize congressional decisions. We never interfere with what they put on the agenda or what they don't included in it. And we expect the same from others,” Szijjarto warned.

“So, to be honest, we are not concerned about such instructions. Because we are not the 51st state, but a very sovereign country,” the Hungarian Foreign Minister added.

Previously, the Hungarian parliament failed to pass Sweden's admission into NATO due to a "lack of quorum" resulting from a boycott by opposition parties in Hungary's main governing body.

Turkiye's Grand National Assembly previously ratified Sweden's bid to enter NATO in mid-January, meaning Hungary remains the last holdout for Sweden's ascension into the alliance.

Austrian MEP warns against turning Europe into second Arabia or Africa

Austrian MEP Harald Vilimsky stated during a speech at Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Hungary that conservatives were fighting for their homeland to stay European and not become “a second Arabia or Africa,” according to Remix News.

“Our common goal is to protect our countries, to protect the Western world from illegal migration and organised abuse of asylum so that Europe does not become a second Arabia or Africa.”

Harald Vilimsky is a member of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) known for its anti-immigration stance and which is currently leading in national pre-election polls.

We do not want the name Mohammed to become the most popular name for male newborns in our great countries, as is the case in Brussels, where the EU parliament is located.

Vilimsky praised Hungary and its leader Prime Minister Viktor Orbán who he said was fighting large-scale immigration.

“In Hungary, this problem does not exist, because Hungary has a prime minister who truly cares about the Hungarian people.”

Since Donald Trump’s election victory, we have witnessed striking accommodations to his narrow win and mandate — what has been called anticipatory obedience. Are we sleepwalking into an autocracy? We hope not, and we would be glad if the threat does not materialize. But as close observers of people and places where democracy has come under pressure and occasionally buckled, we see creeping autocracy as a distinct and underdiscussed possibility. We know well other nations, including Hungary and Poland, where leaders have steered policies that lead to a backsliding of democracy. We see eerie similarities between what transpired in those countries and what Mr. Trump and his transition team have already done and promise to do. Fortunately, we also have examples of countries that have pushed back on threats to democracy, and we can learn from them. [...] As we have seen in other democracies, autocracy is not built out of the whims of a leader but becomes entrenched only when it has been certified by legalism — exploiting legal means to serve autocratic ends. After Mr. Orban paid his third visit of 2024 to Mar-a-Lago in early December and after revelations that his people were involved in influencing policy in Mr. Trump’s second term, Mr. Trump’s affinity for the Orban playbook should not be surprising. In Poland, where the Law and Justice government also cemented its power by law using the Orban playbook, masses of Polish citizens went to the streets demanding protection of the judiciary. When the next election neared, opposition parties set aside their differences to establish a campaign that focused on the threats to constitutional democracy. They won, albeit narrowly, in 2023. [...] The lesson Poland teaches us is not only that would-be autocrats can be pushed back if the opposition is united but also that a country stands a better chance of recovery if it blocks autocracy before it becomes legally entrenched.  [...] Defenders of democracy will have to stay united, focusing on ensuring that checks and balances remain intact and that crucial democratic watchdog institutions elude capture. HUNGARY'S PRESIDENT, VIKTOR ORBAN CALLS UKRAINE "ONE OF THE MOST CORRUPT COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD" IN INTERVIEW

In an interview with French Magazine, La Pointe, Hungary's Prime Minister, Viktor Orban laughed off the idea of Ukraine joining the European Union, and called Ukraine "one of the most corrupt countries in the world."

Orban has been firm in his staunch opposition to Ukraine joining the European Union, calling the country "corrupt" just one week before European leaders are expected to make a decision on starting talks for ascension to the bloc.

"Hungary is a neighbor of Ukraine... we know exactly what is happening," Oban told French magazine La Pointe in an interview Friday.

“Ukraine is known to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world. It’s a joke! We cannot take the decision to start a process of accession negotiations."

Next week, EU leaders will gather in Brussells to discuss two major decisions on Ukraine; one to approve the decision to begin ascension talks with Kiev, and the second to release €50 Billion ($54 Billion) in aid to Ukraine.

However, these discussions are made more difficult by Orban's steadfast opposition to continued support for Ukraine, let alone talks for ascension to the European Union.

In his interview with La Pointe, Orban stood firm on these decisions, repeating his positions and defending his stance, calling the plan to begin ascension talks a "bad decision" and saying Ukraine wasn't ready to join the EU, despite the Commission's declaration otherwise.

According to Orban, the European Union needs to do a lot more "preparatory work" before the bloc will be ready to accept Ukraine.

One of Orban's most pressing concerns with regards to Ukraine has been his consistent opposition to allowing unfettered Ukrainian grain imports into the EU.

“If you allow this [Ukrainian] agriculture to enter the European agricultural system, it will destroy it the next day,” Orbán told Le Point. “Without transforming our farm subsidy system, we cannot let them in. The consequences will be terrible,”

Instead, Orban suggests a "strategic partnership treaty" to raise the level of EU-Ukraine cooperation without offering membership.

The Hungarian leader was recently invited to a dinner hosted by the French President Emmanuel Macron, where he tried, without luck, to convince Orban to change his stance on Ukraine.

But the Hungarian leader told La Pointe he “cannot give up [his] position” on Ukraine.

"My idea is to try to convince him to listen to my arguments,” Orbán said. “I am very interested in his opinion on the reasons that push France to act in this way.”

Chinese President to visit France, Serbia and Hungary in May

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit France, Serbia and Hungary from 5 to 10 May, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Monday.

Bilateral relations with France have maintained good growth momentum, and the two countries have maintained strategic ties and practical cooperation, ministry spokesman Lin Jian said, discussing Xi’s trip to France. Lin also added:

“China looks forward to working with France to further enhance political mutual trust, solidarity and co-operation.”

He also said Xi will hold talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to exchange views on bilateral relations and discuss the modernisation of China-Serbia relations.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is seeking to expand economic ties with China, including by increasing Hungary’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative, which includes further railway modernisation projects as well as funding for a new oil pipeline linking it to Serbia. Xi Jinping is expected to arrive in Hungary after visiting France and Serbia.

Meanwhile, Fan Weiguo, director of the Asia-Europe Bureau of Xinhua News Agency, told the media that NATO committed wild crimes by bombing the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade in 1999. Weiguo stated:

China has not forgotten and will never forget it. These are NATO’s savage crimes.
