Transformers: Multiverse #14 - "CSI: Cybertron"

wada sez: On deviantART, Mario acknowledged that Perceptor’s characterisation here isn’t really remotely similar to how he’s been portrayed in any prior media; historically, he speaks with loquacious verbosity and never uses idioms. Really, this feels more like a Prowl or Nightbeat strip. Now, the version of the comic you’ve just read above is actually edited from the strip as originally posted (see below), which featured some blatant coloring errors on Liam Shalloo’s part; presumably, the script for this one would’ve called for a generic Autobot in the second panel with Ratchet, and Fracas (Scourge’s Targetmaster partner) in the final panel, but presumably Liam never got the script, leading him to color these characters as the Decepticon Hun-Gurrr and the Autobot Scattershot, cross-factional counterparts who have no reason to be in this story. Onishi appears to have drawn Fracas using the erroneous character model from classic ‘80s fiction; I expect that Shalloo misinterpreted the artwork as depicting Scattershot, (who he broadly resembles, particularly with the back-mounted gun barrel), then picked Hun-Gurrr for the second panel due to his prior association with Scattershot. I’m not sure who Onishi intended that background character to be, if anyone, but the details look fairly specific; for my corrected version of the strip, I’ve colored him as Fastlane, who has those wheels on the backs of the shoulders. It’s a shame that the strip as originally posted had all these little issues muddying the story, because I think the core premise here of a Targetmaster howdunnit that asks “what if the murder weapon transformed and hid itself” is really good, and Onishi’s art is gorgeous as always.

Dear Vector Prime,
How did Gnaw and Cindersaur become members of the Predacons and Terrorcons, respectively?
Dear Legends Leftover,
In the case of the former, it was more by accident than anything. Gnaw had been the leader of a team of Sharkticons sent into the depths of Cybertron to pull the large switch controlling the Exponential Null Generator. When that plan went awry, he ended up following Galvatron to the surface, and from there to Chaar, without being noticed.
When Galvatron finally stumbled across Gnaw (chewing on the base of his makeshift throne), the Decepticon leader threw him to the Predacons—declaring that since they were both spawn of the Quintessons, they should get along fine.
Razorclaw knew better than to argue with Galvatron when he was in one of his moods, and reluctantly accepted the Sharkticon. When the Predacons went on their hunts, they would toss the scraps to Gnaw, keeping him around as a living waste disposal machine.
Cindersaur, by contrast, was deliberately headhunted. Hun-Gurr had been keeping his watchful eyes on the Combiner Wars, and had seen the other combiner teams picking up new members to replace fallen ones or to increase their number. The Terrorcons' rivals, the Technobots, had acquired two new members even, which stirred envy in the Terrorcon leader. Still, Hun-Gurr was not about to recruit just anyone to join his squad; he wanted an outcast—someone whose loyalty would lie with him over any other Decepticon. He found the perfect bot with Cindersaur. The Firecons had recently broken up, and Cindersaur had found themself lost without their teammates... literally. They had gone on a rampage, ending up completely disoriented in Chaar’s wilderness. Their usual means of retracing their steps, by blazing a trail behind them, had completely failed them in a landscape where everything was already burned and blackened, and they'd been wandering in circles for months.
Hun-Gurr tracked them down, and offered Cindersaur a place in the Terrorcons. He had a quick recruitment form for Cindersaur to incinerate, and that was that! The other Terrorcons were hesitant at first, but they soon came around, after realizing that the smell of smoldering metal helped mask Blot’s stench.

Note
To contrast the Scattorshot being a STEM major, I propose Hun-Gurrr being a humanities (or the cybertronian equivalent thereof) major of some sort.
that sounds so cute but Hun-Grr cannot read. the contrast to STEM Scattershot is some guy who crawls in dirt and eats radioactive metal

Now we leave Chikyu and return back to Earth with the Revice cast. All of the assigned Cybertronians are mostly based on their personal Vistamp.
The Revice Cast assigned Cybertronians:
Ikki and Vice: Formerly BW Megatron, now Gigatron due to Megatron's attack is the skillful and tactical T-rex leader of the Predacons in the future, but due to becoming good, he is willing to risk his own life to save his own friends. He's also good with kids and has a rubber ducky named Quackles that he considers his best friend and can transform.
Daiji and Kagerou: Nightscream the troubled but good bat.
Sakura: Colada the arrogant and loner cobra.
Lovekov: The destructive and mindless Abominus, comprised of Hun-Gurrr the brilliant yet gluttonous quadrupedal two-headed dragon, Rippersnapper the superiority obsessed bipedal shark creature, Blot the appallingly disgusting and friendly but dumb hunchbacked monster-thing with an inferiority complex, Sinnertwin the predatory robotic two-headed dragon-ish thing, Cutthroat the overly-violent hawk monster thing, and Cindersaur the not-very-smart bipedal horn-nosed lizard monster thing, who all treat Lovekov like a queen.
Hiromi: Blackarachnia the smart, sly, and dangerous black widow spider and girlfriend to Fuzor Silverbolt.
George: Tarantulas the scheming mad scientist Lycosa tarantula.
Hana: BW Scavenger the master blackmailer and strategist ant who uses fear.
The others (Go, Genta/Papa Igarashi and Orteca): BW Insecticon the creepy and spying stag beetle, Hardshell the hyperactive and extremely chatty rhinoceros beetle who helps Papa and Mama Igarashi with work, and Ikard the much kinder cousin and only friend of Scuba.
Ikki, Vice and Gigatron are taking care of the youngest Igarashi, Koushirou, while the others are away doing something. Ikki and Vice have left to cook lunch and left Gigatron to take care Koushirou.
Gigatron: What's your name little fella?
Koushirou: Koushiwou.
Gigatron: Koushirou is it? I'd like you to meet my best friend, Quackles. Say hi Quackles.
Quackles: *Quack* Hello.
Gigatron and Koushirou have some bonding time like Gigatron carrying Koushirou and playing hide and seek and Koushirou sees Gigatron as a cool uncle.
Gigatron: Koushiro, can you say Gigatron?
Koushirou: Giga-Gigatwon.
Gigatron: Yesss Koushiro, that's right.
Tumblr media
Unbeknownst to both of them, Ikki, with tears of joy and a smile, had been filming the bonding between his youngest brother and his big T-Rex friend, and sends to the Riders and the others.
Tumblr media
What are the Riders and Revice Cast to seeing the video Ikki sent of Koushirou and Gigatron bonding?

No one can resist the power of Baby Koushirou

Dear vector prime, Did Swindle choose his name, or was it just oddly fitting? Why do people put trust in him when his name is literally Swindle?
Dear Nominative Naysayer,
Yes, he would have chosen that name for himself, or at least chose to assume it at someone else's suggestion. When it comes to the names we pick for ourselves, there's no set tradition; we will choose a word that expresses something about us, or adopt a name from an alien culture we've interacted with, or simply pick a combination of words which is pleasing to the audio receptor.
As I've previously discussed, we are creatures of change, who change our names much more frequently than most humans—at least, relative to our lifespans. Bots like Trailbreaker and Slag have gone through countless names over the years. At the extreme end, we have the likes of Hun-Gurrr, who changes his name multiple times a day, depending on how hungry he is feeling.
I myself am something of an exception; bots of a certain vintage are only able to change their name a limited number of times before it's set permanently. Why, there was this one marketing stunt offering free products to anyone who'd change their name to that of the store in question—my poor brother Toys"R"Us Prime has been stuck with it ever since.
As for why someone might willingly deal with a bot who's quite literally named "Swindle"… I must admit, I've wondered the same thing myself. But perhaps we had better ask: why would someone willingly join a group who call themselves "Decepticons"?
