The Power of Stop-Motion
Media in today's standard is quick and easy. Rarely is a show more than 2 hours long or 13-epiodes per-season. With that, animated movies are a lot slower than the typical films.
There is a discussion on if animation is suitable for film purposes and while it is often shunned by the Golden Globes or the Oscars or other awards. The very few outliers can prove these awards and the world very wrong.
But that is not what we will be talking about today. Because while animation is popular, there is a dark horse among its sphere. One with a rich history and strong filmography that should be shared. Let's talk about;
- Have I possibly gone daffy? -
Stop-motion is a film making style that compiles multiple still images of an object being physically manipulated in small movements into one whole scene.
Majority of Stop-motion films and videos use [Clay Animation] or [Paper Animation] with several more varieties of new innovations emerging under the umbrella of stop-motion. The most popular of them in the modern era towards kids is [Lego animation] which is the manipulation of Lego models in motion.
The earliest trace of Stop-motion in films is the 1898 short [The Humpty Dumpty Circus] by Albert E. Smith and James Stuart Blackton which is said to be a lost media. To compensate, please watch [A Tribute to Stop Motion]
In its early concept, Stop-motion was used as a method to create impossible things or do practical effects under budget constrains. Such as the iconic King Kong scene at the Empire State building. Since then, Stop-motion has evolved into a full production industry. From Indies; [Righteous Robot] to Juggernauts; [Laika Studios]
- Shimmer a Little at The Edges -
Unconventional media such as stop-motion is often not a style suited for every story. Its a rather expensive type of media that requires worthy innovations top break the niche barrier. Just looking at Laika Studios alone, we see that they've develop a lot of interesting ways to improve visual effects while staying to their stop-motion roots.
One perfect example is seen in < Kubo and the Two Strings > where the animators need to create water in a still image world that feels natural. [A Perfect Storm] one other part of the stop-motion puzzle is the iron-willed discipline it to conceptualize, animate and edit a production that can take about 3 to 5 years to complete. More so of a time frame than a normal film.
This difficult curve lead to budgeted methods such as using models that already exist to tell new stories. Such as; Legos or with crude multi-jointed figures of existing characters. [MOONSHINE]
While I may say its crude, the low budget production is the selling point. Assisted with sound bites taken from gaming sessions or from shows featuring a lot of inside jokes and memes. Also, its hilarious to see a Teletubby turned into a Eldritch monster.
These attempts to make stop-motion productions accessible has captured the attention of other like-minded channels to collaborate and elevate one another. [ERB: Harry Potter vs Luke Skywalker]
- For Better Tomorrows -
With all that is said, what is the power of stop-motion? As a media that is tediously overlapping across processes. What are the better tomorrows for our inanimate subjects?
I like to think, that as filmmaking grows. Stop-motion will continue to remain as a sacred tug against live action films and traditional animation. It can be used to tell complicated stories with concepts that may look strange if its adapted in a live action.
As I have mentioned in [The Beautiful World of Hilda] animation's greatest strength is simplification. Stop-motion takes the opposite side of that philosophy.
Its a higher level of world building of the materials with willingness to accept mistakes and ruggedness that gives them that little flavor of life. As an actual touchable thing, the various cartoonish styles can take on a whole new dimension to heighten the style and give it that detail that is less polished.
Stop-motion shows that filmmaking magic can still exist despite already knowing the tricks. Its a media where every frame shown has a significant purpose that invokes a specific flow. That's the power of stop-motion.

“🎵👨The DJ”
🇵Me: This will be the last standalone title before saving the last three soon afterwards. It’s gonna for one particular smiling critter that it’ll be in it for a surprise. 🤫 Anyways though, I’m not too shy enough when bringing the scare for this random Inktober idea. Can’t help it to try this out, but having a crossover with FNAF’s DJ Music Man on a rampage at “Rhyme Time Town”? Okay, that it was an odd choice to make. 🫤 Well considering this animated show about nursery rhymes like “Humpty Dumpty” or “Itsy Bitsy Spider”, it does lineup for DJ Music Man’s spider-like appearance maybe? 😅 Nevertheless, I’d go along with it on my list of Inktober; even if I would’ve pick something different. Do hope the dog and cat will be alright to survive DJ’s rampage. So run! 😱
DJ Music Man - Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach (2021); Steel Wool Studios, ScottGames
Daisy the Puppy, Cole the Kitten, and The Moon (Up Above) - Rhyme Time Town (2020 - 2021); DreamWorks Animation Television, Netflix

HE DOESN'T CARE!!! And he, himself, used Natalie Viscuso to tease his fandom, to generate fuss for algorithms, to manipulate the public and to motivate hate on the internet, to divide the fandom so part of it could do their dirty job, because the feedback he had from people with this PR circus wasn't the result he expected.
Each step of this shenanigan was because of his cowardice and toxic vanity. Yes! HENRY CAVILL IS TOXIC!!! He is like a drug. And you can't see it, because you continue using it and you are intoxicated. All this toxicity could have been avoided if he had agreed to stop it and had given an end to it. Oh! Yeah! You will say both pigeons are silent now. After 4 years of BS and sh*t spread everywhere?
By giving an end to it, I'm not necessarily referring to a break up announcement. He is free to date and have sex with anyone and could have continued believing he was in love, living a fairy tale, he could have continued the date (fake or real) privately, out of the spotlight and public eye to avoid this unnecessary fuss and hate on the internet.
But, he had the urge to promote his Ego, to defend the rep (What rep?) of his promiscuous Godsent and chose the prank, the stubbornness, the deviltry, as a diversion, trying to minimize the effect of her existence. He chose to use Natalie Viscuso, - a pitiful redneck woman with no self respect, who he intentionally exposed to public execration expecting to avoid his own exposure (Cowardice) -, on temper tantrums against his fandom, because his fandom had attitude and guts to frankly react to his last fake and bad acting performance, expressing their honest opinion about it.
It all happened, because he has an unscrupulous and immoral social media and PR managements who are aligned with his dubious Humpty Dumpty Character, which sways from one situation to another according to interests, certainly not considering the saying he once bragged about, that "Dignity always comes before fame".
He definitely proved, with this shenanigan that, not only he didn't mean it, but that fame is imperative and it swallowed his dignity. This deviltry had no initial intention to make Natalie Viscuso a somebody nor later, had the intention to promote true and real love. It was to promote his manhood, later, used as a weapon against his fandom and their criticism, and to send the message HE DOESN'T CARE!!!
He needed to avoid recognizing he had made a mistake, because he's a gent and had to (?)' protect his brilliant redneck love by exposing her to public execration, so as to prove he supports her by sending a message HE DOESN'T CARE!!!. He wanted to avoid the shame of being unmasked and seen as a liar, by staging the worst deviltry his management team had planned for him. For so, he needed to stage he was giving a f**k and that HE DOESN'T CARE!!!
Well, it turns out HE REALLY DOESN'T CARE!!! Because a dignified, respectful actor who respects himself, his profession and his fandom would never get involved in such an immoral circus with unscrupulous strategies. Unless a much worse truth needs to be hidden. It is the first time I see an actor going against his fandom for being afraid of the consequences of his own acts and to avoid recognizing accountability for his weakness and bad decisions.
They normally try to save his asses by addressing some kind of announcement to fandom in which they try to recover the lost fans and the actors' integrity. What he did with the FO post was definitely, not that kind of attempt. It was the opposite, an amateur management calling fans out as if he was spiritually better, a superior human being.
Who does he think he is? A God, Jesus, a superior enlightened being? How can escorting sl**s for publicity and fame in a brothel called Hollywood be enlightened? How can motivating hate on the internet by putting people against each other so a part could do their job to save his ass from shame, be enlightened? That's the crooked talking of the cripple.

Movement Project: Week 2 - AMD Task 2 (23/01/23)
Researching Animation History and Processes
The Three types of animation that I investigated were
Puppet Stop Motion Animation
Traditional Handdrawn animations (2D)
CGI animations (3D/Digital)
First I divided animation into 3 types - stop motion, 2D and 3D. Then I looked deeper into the history, process and develoupment of one type of each strand of animation.
For Pupperlt stop motion I looked at the first Puppet stop motion film made in 1898 ' The Humpty Dumpty Circus ' directed by J.Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith produced by the Vitgraphs Company of Animation. Since then puppet animation has grown and the tradition has continued even to today with Guillero del Toros Pinocchio (2022). However another type of puppet animation arose in the late 1980's called claymation with the emergence of Aardman Animation Studios and Nick Park the creator of Wallace and Gromit. To see more of my research on claymotion see my post below :
https://at.tumblr.com/k00265221/secondary-research-clay-mation-animation/w71i6kyhw3ps
I feel as though clay motion is my favourite type of animation therefore I will be doing my 4-10 second animation in that medium. I will be taking inspiration from Aardmans Morp lh series as he is what inspired my character Mr Mush . I love how clay motion allows the animator to create a figure which they get to make an original world with (set) . I love how the animator can physically hold the character. For me personally the fact that Mr Mush is a physical character makes me more emotionally attached to him. He is my plasticine child. Anorher reason why i love claymation is that the medium of stop motion is more hands on than digital.
youtube
The second type of animation I looked at was the traditional hand drawn animations typically used by Disney until the 1990s. One of the most famous clips of cel animations is Steamboat Willie produced by Disney in 1928. I love this type of animation for the same reason why I love stop motion animation - it proves that we can make animations without a heavy reliance on technology.
Don't get me wrong, tech advances have definitely improved animations, but sometimes it can take away the Human aspect of the process of animating and it can sometimes be too much when applied incorrectly.
One of the greatest digital art advances is Computer Generated Images (CGI). Digital animations began to feature in small amounts in feature films from the mid to late 20th century onwards. By the 1990s pixar had developed CGI to the degree that they could make the first 3D feature length film entirely generated by a computer - Toy Story 1995.
The channel 'Insider' on YouTube has some fantastic videos on the develoupment of CGI through Pixar . Here's one to watch:
https://youtu.be/qTPKGVrFtQU
I have to say I am not the biggest fan of CGI. Personally it's just very daunting for me at this stage but I am sure that with training time and practice I could understand it and with that Grow to love it.

Stop Motion Experimental Film Research
Stop motion requires the camera to capture a series of images where the object is moved or manipulated physically between each frame. This process can be time-consuming, but the result is unique.
The first stop motion film is the 1898 The Humpty Dumpty Circus made by Albert E. Smith and James Stuart Blackton. It was made from a toy. The original copy has been lost, and there are only still image of this stop motion film today.
In the 1933 film "Experimental Animation", Len Lye used a marionette monkey as the protagonist, which can be considered life-like at the time.

Mia's 5 Media Based Artists:
[IN ORDER]
Chris Drury - ", Willow Domes on the Este", a physical work that relied on the manipulation of the natural growth of willow trees.
J. Stuart Blackton - "The Humpty Dumpty Circus", one of the earliest and most successful works of stop motion animation and the emphasis on photographical sequences.
James Nares - "Street", a series of photos shot at six second bursts but were edited to seem like one continuous flow of mini film, focusing on real people and passing time.
Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg - "The Substitute", a digital recreation of an almost entirely extinct animal that can be interacted with.
Dodie - "Intertwined", a music video that uses the lack of motion of objects with the real flow of time, along with the only sounds being the music and vocals being overlayed the visuals.
