How to Make Hummingbird Food
How to Make Hummingbird Food
How to Make Hummingbird Food The apodiform bird feeder I’ve persisted the structure is one of all my sudden joys in life. I originally decorated it as a result of hummingbirds unbroken checking out a selected spot-I’m convinced my house’s previous house owners decorated a feeder there-and each summer they show up once more and demand I feed them. So I do. The garden store sells bottles of…

I know I'm mostly talking to myself here, but I do want a record in case... Something happens.
I looked up how to make my own heated hummingbird feeder, since I only have one and it's freezing up eventually too.
But I have three other glass ones.
Long story short, I'm going to need to get ramen take out soon, because the bowl is perfect.
I'm going to leave it running tonight, I'll be awake for several hours still.
I need to find out if it works okay, if it's going to need an extra bulb, or if it catches on fire.
Y'all it's cold out there.
The top hummingbird feeder you see there I just brought inside. Hopefully the glass doesn't crack.
The second hummingbird feeder has a single night light type bulb in the base. I think one of my projects for the winter is going to be figuring out how to heat my regular glass feeders.

So I know that "avian" universes have been created by a few Planes folk, or at least just by buddies @c-119 and @ask-dusty-boy (that I'm aware of currently) but I'm quietly toying with a similar idea of my own, just on the...Opposite side of the scale?
By which I mean, goddamn tiny bird people.
So this is where I wanna dump all of that plated spaghetti of unsorted ideas. I have lost my writing muses so pardon the mess.
I know for normal-sized people to have bird wings, generally the rule of thumb is that you make them bigger, and their wings much bigger, to reach accuracies and such for how they'd get into the air. And also power. Big powerful bird person cool.
For me, creating my own little side-dish sandbox of "human Planes characters but with bird wings so I can play birds too because fuck you still you one human person from an unspecified number of years ago who wouldn't let me play with them" means going the other way. Making them TEENY. fairy sized. Dollhouse scaled. Itty-bitty please do not step on them little bird babies.
This might also be so I can save a bunch of DIY dollhouse items to my Pinterest and melt over them with an excuse that I'm "conducting research" for such a world.
Anyways.
Somewhere I already said and or drew or did something where I was like "Blade. Hummingbird boy. Nuff said." But like LEGIT, I bring this up again. He would have a hummingbirds wings and have similar qualities. Probably would struggle with discerning reflective surfaces in bright sunlight so he's probably hit his head more than once on stuff.
Baby go boom, pass out on ground for while til someone hands him an appy juice (natural sugar is very helpful for replenishing an exhausted hummingbird's energy)
Dusty is probably one of those small wild birds you hear in the morning. Maybe like a robin or something. Loud in the morning, chirpy, big on vocalization and tree branch hopping
...Nick's probably a chickadee. The colors tho. The little round ass fucking body, that thing is so B O R B. He is small round borb. A mess of feathers.
I also won't take literal fairies off the table here because that would be an interesting combination. Or butterflies! Or moths! Or literally any other type of small creature capable of flight. And the likes, for the non-fliers as well
*cough* spider Maru *cough*
Fuck now I want to ironically make Cabbie into some kind of tiny bat thing
The SJ can be his bugs- I mean um beetle styled people
GUYS, NOBODY SLEEP ON KEEPING TINY BIRD PEOPLE IN A DOLLHOUSE AT HOME THO.
I imagine there's a terrible pet industry for them if that's the case, but my point still stands that if you take good care of them you should get to have them around as trusty companions! Maybe less like a pet hamster and more like a befriended hive of bees
They have predators. Likely just any animal that would eat what they would be animal-wise. But like not each other. That'd be weird. Also if that was the case Cabbie would be down like, five Smokejumpers. So no it's just the big pred animals going after them not them after themselves
Cats are NOTORIOUS for getting to them. I fully believe Rip would have set one on Dusty in their final race, on purpose.
They probably aren't like, just woodland fairy like creatures anymore, like the stories would have you believe. I think they'd all be integrated somewhat with the modern world and have a lot of evolution themselves, so they basically have scaled down versions of everything normal humans have, even down to styled choices of clothing...well, minus the added wings
They probably don't lay eggs
They do molt though when stressed
I have to imagine there's SOME sort of process to the insect ones on shedding skins?? That's kinda gross but like? It's nature??
*cough* spider Maru *cough*
Catching them is probably illegal, especially inhumanely (ie in ways that injure or risk injury to them, like using bug nets, zappers, etc) and accidental capture (like from mouse traps let's say) may be fineable
(okay but someone stuck on a sticky mouse trap is kind of funny to me. They have such an angry grin and the occasional 'flflflflfl!' of wings)
That's it that's my post byeee

Today we are talking about orbulon's eyeballs
A question that nobody cares about is what is orbulon's color vision like? He is obviously adapted for low light conditions (white/translucent color, can't function without completely opaque sunglasses) so he wouldnt really need to see most of the colors that terrestrial earth creatures can. We know for a fact that he can see red because he has a microgame in diy that has you select a red vs. white shape. This is interesting to me because on earth deep sea creatures, if they have any color vision at all, tend to be more sensitive to blue light because red light doesn't reach deep ocean depths. (Comparing him to benthic animals and not cave animals because most animals in dark cave habitats are blind and we know he's not.) In fact red color vision is comparatively rare in the animal kingdom. Here are some spitball reasons why animals might want to see red
Seeing when fruit is ripe (e.g. primates)
Pollination (e.g. hummingbirds)
Predation (e.g. snakes, mosquitos*)
Orbulon to me is not a pollinator. Nor is he a fruit guy. To me a squishy smart invertebrate that eats hamburgers is a predator.
*HERES THE THING THOUGH. i mentioned that snakes and mosquitos can see red but i lied. Snakes' actual eyes can only see blue and green shades, and very poorly, but snakes with heat pits can detect infrared thermal radiation from their prey. Likewise, mosquitos have dogshit vision but when they are presented with olfactory stimuli from their prey, namely carbon dioxide from stank breath, they are able to detect and show a preference for certain warm colors like red and orange. We all know orbulon's eyesight to be quite dogshit. However, like the snake, and like the mosquito, orbulon does have a far more competent sensory organ to augment his dogshit eyes
Thats right. The schlorb
now the idea of orbulon's species having infrared/red color "vision" to detect prey is very tempting, but that also hinges on the assumption that his prey (or the prey of his ancestors) would be warm blooded. But thats crazy
so Instead im going to posit that maybe he doesnt need the Schlorb for colors at all. What if his eyes are a different kind of fucked up.
i alluded to orbulon being like a cephalopod earlier. Something you might know about the stars of the cephalopod world (cuttlefish and to a lesser extent octopodes) is the fact that they can change their color extremely well to camouflage. What if i told you they cant actually see color. Ok sit with that for a sec. now what if i told you that they actually can see color. I didnt lie to you im just being needlessly obtuse. Cuttlefish eyes only have one photoreceptor type, and so their "color vision" is likely monochramatic. How Ever. Light bends differently underwater. Each color has its own wavelength, and if a lens is not able to "focus" on every color equally it creates chromatic distortion, which causes some colors to be blurrier or more in focus than others. Even though the cuttlefish can't "see" these colors the same way we do, its eyes can differentiate these different wavelengths based on their distortion bu rapidly focusing and unfocusing its eyes at different depths. Let's take a look at cuttlefish eyes
The cuttlefish has weirdly curved eyes, which can change to a W-shape in higher light conditions and become more ovular in low-light conditions. It's hypothesized that the curvature of the cuttlefish eye causes chromatic aberration to become more extreme, thus aiding in their detection of different light wavelengths. You know who else has curved fucked up eyes
Ya huh
IN CONCLUSION:
Nothing we know about orbulons color vision has changed because he is a cartoon character and i am insane.
THE END

The Smashing Times — Mrs. Ladyships and the Cleanerhouse Boys (Perennial/K)
These tunes tip a jaunty hat to the Television Personalities. The band’s name, after all, is purloined from a TVP song, as is its tipsy, strumming surreality. The main principles are native to Seattle and currently residing in Baltimore, but you’ve never guess that, not from the flat, north English intonations of “Tarts and Vicars,” nor from the fey group-sung fantasias of “Ben Jimeny the Green Grocer,” a dead ringer for Dan Treacy’s “Arthur the Gardener.” Still traces of Smashing Times’ PNW origins turn up sporadically. A slouchy, jammy, beat-dragging reverie called “Can I Have Some Tea?” requests the quintessential English beverage from the depths of a sagging punk squat couch, two fuzzed and free-spirited DIY traditions meeting in an improbable middle.
This is Smashing Times’ fourth full-length and the second on Perennial and K Records, fitting enough since it mixes the tuneful punk pop of the former, the lo-fi aesthetic and wide-eyed lyrical naivete of the latter. Here, the Smashing Times proffer music hall skiffles tipped off their axes, whistling cheerily past the desolate stretches.
In the opener, first single and title track, they play at Creation-esque (the “Painter Man” band, not the label) guitar pop, sliding into ringing power chords like a base runner stealing second, ba-da-dum. Radiant guitar licks run into slack-jawed, girl-sung “la la la”s, the effect both epic and a bit feckless. Likewise, “Wednesday, on a Hummingbird’s Wing” carves out large pop sonics without seeming to fuss too much, the bass line like a sharpie drawing thick lines around indefinite, C86-style miasmas.
Found sounds and spoken word intervals turn up in unexpected places. For instance, “I Paint the Pictures” doesn’t really start until an upper class British voice has declared, “I could offer you a huge great glass of stout. I drink this stuff at dawn, because it makes the day shorter.”
“Tarts and Vicars” is, perhaps, the best track here, akin to Orange Just in its twitchy bass and trebly guitar skree, but also borrowing a bit of Depeche Mode’s “Just Can’t Get Enough” for pulse and friction. It’s as loose and dreamy as anything on this oddball album, but it also moves, which turns out to make all the difference.

A Guide to Flower Bed Design and Installation in Tulsa
Tulsa, Oklahoma, with its distinct seasons and vibrant community, offers the perfect backdrop for stunning flower beds. These bursts of color not only enhance your curb appeal but also create a haven for pollinators and a tranquil space to relax and enjoy the outdoors. However, designing and installing a flower bed can feel daunting, especially for those new to gardening. Fear not, Tulsa residents! This guide will walk you through the process, transforming your vision into a flourishing reality.
Planning Your Dream Flower Bed
The first step is to envision your ideal flower bed design and Installation Tulsa. Consider these factors:
Location: Sunlight is crucial for plant growth. Observe how much sun the chosen area receives throughout the day. Full sun areas (receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight) are ideal for many flowering plants, while partial shade (receiving 3-6 hours of direct sunlight) offers opportunities for shade-loving varieties.
Size and Shape: Measure the available space and consider the overall layout of your yard. A flower bed can be a focal point in your landscaping or a complementary element bordering a walkway. Curved beds create a more natural look, while rectangular beds offer a structured feel.
Choosing the Perfect Plants
Tulsa's climate allows for a diverse range of flowering plants. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Blooming Season: Consider a mix of plants with staggered blooming times to ensure color throughout the season. Spring brings forth vibrant tulips and pansies, while summer explodes with lilies, petunias, and zinnias. Fall offers a final flourish of mums and asters.
Maintenance: Be realistic about the amount of time you can dedicate to upkeep. Some plants, like roses, require regular deadheading and pruning, while others, like coneflowers, are relatively low-maintenance.
Native vs. Non-native: Native plants are adapted to the local climate and attract pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds. However, non-native varieties can offer a wider range of colors and textures.
Turning Vision into Reality
Once you have a plan and chosen your plants, it's time to get your hands dirty!
Preparation is Key: Start by removing any existing weeds or debris from the designated area. Test your soil's pH level and amend it if necessary to create an environment suitable for your chosen plants.
Planting with Care: Dig holes at the appropriate depth and spacing for each plant, following the specific needs of each variety. Gently loosen the roots of container plants before placing them in the hole.
Mulch Matters: Apply a layer of mulch around your plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
Professional Help: A Blooming Investment
While the DIY approach can be rewarding, professional flower bed design and installation services in Tulsa offer several benefits:
Expertise: Landscape designers have the knowledge and experience to create a visually appealing and functionally sound flower bed that thrives in Tulsa's climate.
Time-Saving: Hiring professionals frees up your valuable time, allowing you to enjoy your blooming masterpiece without the labor-intensive process.
The Right Plants: Professionals can recommend the best plants for your specific location, soil con
ditions, and desired style.
Blooming with Pride
Whether you choose to tackle the project yourself or partner with a professional, creating a vibrant flower bed design and Installation Tulsa is an investment in your home's beauty and your own well-being. With careful planning, plant selection, and proper care, your flower bed will become a source of pride, a haven for pollinators, and a delightful addition to Tulsa's vibrant landscape. So, get out there, embrace your creativity, and let your flower bed bloom!
