sunday, september 8th, 2024

highlights from this weekend:

taking a walk to the library and having a study date with my partner

slowly but surely catching up on the TAZ graphic novels

eating good food :)

finishing the chapter 7 labs in Practical Malware Analysis (I totally missed all the important bits of the third one, but the authors did say this was the hardest lab in the book so far 😅)

enjoying the beautiful weather and going birdwatching for a bit (fall migration has started! there are so many birds out rn omg)

so i was wondering. hrm. did dinosaurs urinate or did they get rid of all their waste at once like modern birds. so i found out

this is a urolith. it is a trace fossil of a Dinosaur Piss Impact, presumably from a sauropod. very interesting.

#apparently ostriches urinate. getting rid of urine and feces at once is a weight saving feature in birds #hummingbirds also urinate! they dont eat a lot of solid food.#i knew that one beforehand

Two of my favorite plants for this time of year for the northern hemisphere. Goldenrod, the yellow one and the other plant that is orange and yellow is called Lantana. Both of them are tremendous pollinator plants that support butterflies, bees and birds. Goldenrod supports birds with its seeds in the winter and Lantana supports hummingbirds with its nectar June through November.

A new year!

That means lots of new things and experiences to come, experience and enjoy (or not! It won't always be great)

Resolutions felt weird to set, So this year I figured I'd reword resolutions to goals and things I look forward to or want and aim to do.

This year.....

I want to finish 3 quilts.

I want to try 5 new food recipes.

I aim to extend my garden to make a floral/herbal/"wildgrow" area.

I aim to reduce the trash leaving my home as much as possible this year.

I will at some point have a composter. What style is don't know yet. But I aim to make compost.

I have a goal of all cloth textile brought into the home that is new, being cotton or other compostable material. Secondhand or thrifted for other cloth textiles. (Except socks. and a few other small things for health and safety)

I aim to hatch 12 chicks.

A small update garden update~

The hummingbirds are getting more comfortable with me being around and out while they chill and feed. I believe this is an Anna's hummingbird. (A wiki link below)

2 people have also seen a roadrunner in the neighbourhood! Myself being one, I happened to spot the little guy heading out of the garden into a neighbours yard. I am hoping to catch a picture to share, but am not certain that is a visitor that will be seen regular as their rare to see normally aside from being fully out of the city. No sightings of the hawks in a bit, but there is a pair of the lovebird parrots that hang around the telephone poles regularly now. Caught the woodpecker drinking from the sugar feeder again.

Peas are growing in, hoping for pods soon :D

Tomato's.

I put up some heater lamps for the chickens. It's supposed to drop around low 30s (*f) the next few weeks in the early hours (due to that big storm) and I want to make sure they'll be comfortable. Also took some measures to protect our exterior pipes from freezing.

Making platters in ceramics, here are my drafts pre-professor-approval. We're making two; one decorated with a portrait w/food, the other decorated with a portrait that IS food... he said we could stretch that as far as we wanted

#my art #these are just drafts so these are all kinda rough #so first is (a veeery rough) david attenborough with a hummingbird and flowers paired with a hummindbird caught in a spider web #person w/food and bird being food #second is a duck snacking on lettuce and peas and then a duck made out of peas (#duck w food and duck made out of food #and last is a crow w berries and a crow next to either a hawk or owl #crow w food and crow trying not to be food #for the last one i was really inspired by that crow and snake picture but i cant just copy that photo #so i took a similar idea and went w that; kept the crow because it would let me limit a palette while still making it look intense #simplicity w just red and black #i think im leaning towards the ducks but i made an extra platter so i can still do the crow

i hate diet culture and its consequences as a chronically ill person because it makes groceries a fucking nightmare, why is there such a massive upcharge on food because "this is keto!!" "this is vegan!!" "this is diet!!" motherfucker this is the only food i can eat without getting sick im not paying $15 for ice cream that tastes like paint
