Comprehending Nikolai Gogol; The True King

Regarding Nikolai' Gogol within Bungo Stray Sogs…

Incoming character analyzation which was inspired by my comments of a quiz on Quotev. Here's something: I may have developed a unique perspective on Nikolai's character.

Nikolai is perceived as a clown through and through. However, one of the biggest points in his personality is his longing for freedom.

For this, we need to define his version of "freedom", because from what I've observed, it's rather unusual.

Nikolai is unique in terms of his dynamic with Fyodor Dostoevsky. Why does he choose to be with Fyodor? What is his purpose in serving Fyodor?

To me, it simply doesn't make sense. Fyodor appears to be restricting Nikolai, as a result of Fyodor's very own ideologies binding him to his restrictive humanity. Nikolai standing by Fyodor, it's hardly freedom.

And, let's not forget that his clown persona is a mask. Similar to Dazai, Nikolai wears a mask to conceal his true self. Thus, we raise the question: What purpose does Nikolai's mask serve?

I believe that the mask conceals something. Like how Dazai has multiple personas to protect his vulnerability, Nikolai wears a mask to protect something.

So here, I've got word, from well, myself.

It hides his intelligence.

Nikolai is an intelligent man, capable of serving Fyodor, known as one of the two Kings of one of the Chessboards in Bungo Stray Dogs.

With that being said, understand this: A royal attendant must be able to satisfy the King's needs.

Fyodor requires those who are capable enough to fulfill his tasks, meaning the intelligent. Nikolai is, naturally, capable. From this, we can conclude that he is more than what he lets on, and Fyodor knows this.

Then, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to say that Fyodor keeps Nikolai by his side, in order to control him even better, no?

This hints at Nikolai's true definition of "freedom", and we're almost concluding.

With Nikolai's intelligence, he is clearly aware of Fyodor's blatant attempts to control him. Yet, he continuously abides by the words of Fyodor. Why is this the case?

From my own experience, let me tell you this: When you've been controller for a long, long time, you grow to despise your role.

You wonder when your rule over your chessboard ends, you wish to break free.

Doesn't that sound like Nikolai?

He purposefully plays himself into the hands of Fyodor, letting Fyodor pull his strings as if he was a marionette.

Through this, he doesn't have to work as a manipulator anymore.

He sits back and allows strings to tug him into position, leaving his every move up to Fyodor's control.

And if he is controlled, he no longer needs to control.

Essentially, he breaks away from his control over the chessboard, detaching himself from his mind that only knows to manipulate.

Fyodor is his controller, he escapes through Fyodor. Yet, he's so much more than Fyodor is, logically and emotionally intelligent like a court jester.

In exchange for freedom, Nikolai serves the King.

Am I so wrong, to see that in Nikolai?

Nikolai sees freedom in being controlled by Fyodor.

Q: The non-linearity of time and how it will be related to the nature of the Town are also core story components. How did this affect design and direction?

A: Connecting non-linear time with a long, narrative-heavy story that involves many characters and cause-and-effect chains would be extremely difficult. We focused on what the player feels in the moment rather than on gathering information in the right order. The latter approach works well in shorter formats like Her Story or 12 Minutes, but in Pathologic, it would be overwhelming.

We wanted players to feel like “everything, everywhere, all at once”—similar to Billy Pilgrim in Slaughterhouse-Five. Different versions of reality coexist simultaneously, creating a “quantum” feeling for the player. Look at the time travel mechanic as an opportunity to correct mistakes, or even to make deliberate mistakes in order to unlock new paths and ideas. It is like a "sanctioned save scum."

Q: Conversely, how will it (Pathologic 3) connect to and consider the events and characters in Pathologic 2?

A: Consider it as two subjective retellings of the same events. This is the same Town, the same twelve days, the same participants and events that occurred in the Haruspex’s story. But this is a different perspective. Like two witnesses recounting the same event in Rashomon, the stories vary greatly, each focusing on different details. Finally, we always give our heroes the right to make honest mistakes, forget, and even lie. Every narrator is an unreliable narrator.

Q: How did Pathologic’s previous philosophical explorations help inform or play into the narrative and themes here?

A: Everything we now see as true and valuable, we’ve kept. Everything we’ve outgrown, like childhood clothes, we either reimagined and reinterpreted to give these ideas new meaning, or let go of them. After all, we’ve grown a lot (hopefully, along with the industry). When I first conceived Pathologic, I was 21 and completely alone. Now I’m 47, surrounded by incredibly talented people who enrich this universe as much as I do, and that makes a difference.

We’ve kept the idea of the tragedy of utopian projects. We kept the idea that the plague is a voice of the natural order—one that the thinking human mind cannot accept—and that it has its own truth. We retained the belief that evil cannot be defeated with its own tools or outplayed on its field; yet it can be defeated realistically in a different, orthogonal way. In another dimension.

Q: It’s mentioned that the Bachelor is searching for an immortal man in Pathologic 3. Can you say if this is in reference to Mark Immortell?

A: No, there’s no connection between Simon Kain (one of the town’s rulers) and Mark Immortell (the director of the town theater). Mark is a clown. He awkwardly mimics Simon, parodying him, which is why he takes on this pseudonym. He's fully aware that he’s a jester, and the gesture itself is ironic.

Q: What do you hope players will take away most from Pathologic 3?

A: The hope that humanity remains a promising and capable species.

Gogol character analysis: The Maddening Paradox of Free Will

I recently did an analysis of Gogol and Chuuya and how they explore the idea of freedom and control so differently, but i wanted to make a more full length version for Gogol original: here

Gogol's motivation is one of the most interesting I've ever seen, he takes a concept like wanting freedom, which is a very common motivation for protagonists and hero's. And twists it to be the complete opposite, where he views his emotions, and morality itself as a prison which he desperately wants to escape

Gogol is essentially trying to prove that there is no actual limit on what a human being is capable of doing, that the restrictions of society are just a cage that he can escape from to be truly free.

"No human could melt someone's face with acid for no reason." "No human would be willing to help destroy the whole world." "No human would willingly work for a demon." "No human could ever kill their only friend in the world."

That restriction is what drives Gogol to do so many awful things, he wants to prove that humans are capable of it. To him, we are all trapped in this cage of what we can and can't do, taught to us by our parents and teachers. The illusion of right and wrong. He wants to break free from that and truly be free as a bird.

And at first Gogol thought if he could over come the fundamental instinct of all living things, too survive. Then surely he must be truly free. But a key realisation changed his mind at the last minute.

Gogol tries to act the opposite from how a regular person would in any situation, his mad jester persona is a really good example of that, "Who in their right mind would dress like a clown and parade around giving the enemy quizzes and telling jokes?"

And this is why he chose not to die, it is human instinct to end your own suffering, so surely since his quest for free will was causing him so much suffering, (We know he felt extreme guilt over hurting those politicians), if he was just trying to escape that guilt and pain once and for all, it would prove nothing.

He looks so genuinely sad here, he clearly wishes he could go back to living a life of blissful ignorance, and not be tormented by the bars that surround him. But dying in that cage would mean nothing to him, so the act of dying is not enough to break free.

So if he can't prove his free will by taking his own life, then how can he. He needed to do something so unimaginably irrational, which would hurt him so much without any benefit to him, that there was no way it was simply instinct or emotion. And that's where Fyodor comes in.

I believe Gogol agreed to work for Fyodor because he was the epitome of everything Gogol hated in this world. He is the master of manipulation, so surely if Gogol could break free of his manipulation, he could break free of the prison in his own mind right? And on top of that. What sane person would agree to help the very thing they despise most?

But Gogol found something he didn't expect in Fyodor. Understanding, something no one else had ever had. a person to easy the loneliness of his mission, his first and only friend.

Killing Dostoyevsky, the only person who ever understood him and the only person he considered his friend. He would gain nothing, he would have to live with the crushing guilt and loneliness for the rest of his life, it would be the worst possible thing to do, so much worse then dying. It would the last thing any sane person would want.

Gogol's character so so incredibly interesting, I can't wait to see his backstory and find out what he has planned in the future.

It's old, so I'd want to redraw it to make it consistent with my usual style, but I figured I'd post it for now since Idk when I'll get the chance to redraw it.

FGO popped off when they created an emotionally nuanced complex complicated jester who deeply loves the human they're obsessed with 💖✨ They are simply PEAK

Douman and LimGuda are EVERYTHING to me I've dedicated my soul to them since December 2020!!! 💚🧡🐈‍⬛🍊

"Beautiful Carnivore, the All-Ridiculing" is such a badass title for them oh my goddd I'm obsessed

I take lots of breaks from FGO but I'm always here to see my faves 👁️ Like awakening the slumbering beast...

Hasendow (Showichi Furumi), Douman's character artist is really good at harmonizing colours and working with green and yellow tones

I tend to use cooler tones and saturate pink/red hues in my arts (though it depends on the art for me). It also has nice contrast against their reds and greens! 💖

I already loved the colours of the OG that I chose but the others are so cool to see. It's fun to see the way low opacity gradient maps shift the colours in subtle ways WHOAAA

It's super messy but it's honestly one of my fave doodles in terms of colours 💗 I'm a big fan of the colours too hehe ✨

I used to airbrush the skin colour over the hair (which is a popular stylistic choice), but I don't do it anymore cuz I think my saturated art style looks better with higher contrast.

I think that Douman doodle has some of the best colour work I've done

It's a rough draft WIP so it's pretty messy, but I love the way the colours harmonize on this one 🤭 💗 I should do colour drafts more often…

I think it's cool to use the same green in their earrings and eyeliner, in their hair as well hehe

When I do these rough colour drafts, it's like if I took a bucket of paint and splashed it on the wall. Helps me get a sense of colours!

I love picking colours, and I think it'd be interesting to take this kind of painting style further whenever I get the chance to refine it more 💞

I definitely want to lean into this messy painting style. I wanna get stronger at the painterly style!

Because of Douman and Kuroha (KagePro), I've always wanted to draw mild horror pieces 🥰💞 It'd be super fun to draw Douman and LimGuda arts with mild artistic horror vibes in the future.

My cute kitty is so versatile. They can be cute silly and be peak horror all at once!

I need to get stronger at drawing them. Douman's design is the most detailed and complicated out of my faves, but I wanna draw LOTS of LimGuda... AHHH...

Reminds me of when I was rereading the Ashiya Douman vs. Dioscuri Anthology comic by AU (@/delete_au), that has huge amounts of LimGuda (Douman/Ritsuka) crumbs. DRIVES ME CRAZY...

AU (@/delete_au) is a popular Fate/Grand Order (FGO or Fate/GO) fan artist that's been commissioned to draw official works for Fate (including official merch)

AU’s art style is so intricately detailed and gorgeous. The perspectives, inking, and shading are so gorgeous. Huge art goals for me.

The Ashiya Douman vs. Dioscuri anthology comic has such beautiful art by AU (@/delete_au)

The way he sulks like a cat that wants to be paid attention to when Ritsuka hardly reacts when they sees the maimed shikigami 😭 Please give your kitty lots of attention!

Like once again Douman wants Ritsuka to pay attention to him and searches for reactions from them, but also, the way he refers to himself as their "loyal retainer"

AU has a massive brain since the scenes, visuals, story and dialogue of this Anthology Comic were decided by them. It's also such a huge characterization surplus for Douman and such visual eye candy

Douman invited Ritsuka to fall into hell with them in-game in his My Room lines, and now they're the one inviting him, saying that they will drag him and take him along with them.

Douman tells them that the two of them are "bound by unbreakable/inseparable fate."

And the part where he sarcastically laughs at their speech by comparing it to Buddha's Great Vows, but also acknowledges their determination and tenacity... Aghhhh...

He makes this grandiose, deadly romantic speech back, telling them that they are "bound together by an unbreakable fate" (inseparable fate/karma)

JAW DROP??? THIS IS GAY AS HELL 🏳️‍🌈 LIMGUDA IS REAL!!! 💚🧡

The EN fan-translation is SO good. I love the usage of Saṃvega at the end.

I got stuck on some parts reading the JP version cuz of Douman's vocabulary... I got to clear things up reading the VN fan-TL, and it was interesting to see how it was translated in Viet, but yeah the EN fan-TL cleared up so many things for me.

They drew the Ashiya Douman vs. Dioscuri chapter in one of the FGO anthologies. LIMGUDA ALSO INTERACT IN IT, AND THERE'S TONS OF LIMGUDA FOOD HEHEHEHE... Their art is so gorgeous. They're one of my favourite FGO artists, their works are stunning.

Ashiya Douman vs. Dioscuri by AU (Viet Fan-TL)

The VN fan-TL is pretty much VERY similar since it's based on the same JP text as the source material, but I'll highlight some neat tidbits I noticed

JP uses 弘誓 (Guzei, “Buddha’s great vows”)

The VN fan-TL uses Tứ Hoằng Thệ Nguyện ("The Four Encompassing Vows") of Buddhism, the fourfold bodhisattva vow. Only difference is that it refers to it directly

道満：そう！あなたとこの道満を結ぶは断ち切れぬ「因果」にございます

Douman: Yes, that's right! You and this Douman are connected by an unbreakable “fate”

JP uses 因果 (inga, "cause and effect; karma; fate")

VN fan-TL uses "Unbreakable karma (cause and effect)"

Nhân quả = Karmic cause and effect in Buddhism

I love the wording of him describing the way he's bound to them as “Unbreakable fate”

It's so sexy and fits so well with Douman’s character, saying they have a connection of inseparable fate/karma.

Douman: En’e’gon’jyou. (“I abhor this tainted world, and seek rebirth in the Pure Land.”)

JP version has it as 厭穢欣浄 (En’e’gon’jyou, “I abhor this tainted world, and seek rebirth in the Pure Land.”)

The VN fan-TL translated it as: Yếm ly uế độ, hân cầu Tịnh Độ = "I detest and want to leave the defilement of the Samsara, and seek rebirth in the Pure Land"

厭離穢土 (Onriedo/Enriedo, “Abhorrence of [living in] this impure world”)

The antithesis of Onriedo is 欣求浄土 (Gongujyoudo, “Seeking rebirth in the Pure Land”)

These are Yojijukugo (four character compounds), and concepts of Pure Land Buddhism that became popularized in the Heian era.

The full term is 「おんりえど・ごんぐじょうど」 (Onriedo/Enriedo - Gongujyoudo). The two combined, make a pair.

The phrase is usually shortened to 厭穢欣浄 (En’e’gon’jyou/En’ne’gon’jyou)

In Buddhism, it means, “I am disgusted with this world (I want to leave the world of filth/suffering and stain), and seek the Pure Land [of Buddha]”

I put a decent amount of thought into the throne's designs!

In this essay I will-

Hootbons was the most difficult to design. Good thing I started with her's first!

Since her OC maple is a rubberhose cartoon, I went with a 20s technology theme. The 20s were a time of great technological advancement. Radio, Television, even Vaccum cleaners!

Just cluttering a bunch of 20s technology together didn't look very good, though, so I added maple tree branches along with animation themed items like pencils and animation cels.

Mushy's is just a slightly redesigned version of her throne from her execution. I added a few more mushroom types for variety.

Dia's was easy. It's just his crown as a throne.

Since I found 0104-vkta from her human Gangle art, That's what I based her throne on! You'll see a combination of the happy and sad masks in the middle.

Loxely's was also simple, she's a flower. I made her throne a flower.

Goose's is supposed to be a goose feather, but I looked up references for duck feathers instead for some reason. (also, I just drew generic bird feet instead of goose feet??)

since Rabid is a jester with a clown nose (a mix of a medieval form of entertainment and the more modern concept of a circus clown), I decided to mix a medieval throne with props you'd find in a circus!

Burrotello's throne was made reaalllly late in the game, when I had already finished most of the sketches for part one, but I felt bad not including her since she was the only new member of our discord at the time.

I went with a gothic theme for her's. I don't think her clothes can really be considered goth, but that's what I went for. Maybe it's the earrings.

You'll also notice that, unlike the others, she doesn't have anything on the backrest! I forgot it 😭 (this design element is an important theme.)

Just realised I forgot to include Ark-fork!

Her's was pretty simple, it's just a throne made of bones. There wasn't really any planning for this one!

Okay, so the backrests! Each of the thrones have a circular element in that area (except for Burrotello because I forgot, and Dia's and Mushy's aren't really circular, but you get it). They are meant to represent halos. If you look at the backgrounds, you'll see eyes on the balcony of the elite's seating section:

And, it's not very visible since the large thrones are covering it up, but there are wings on the back wall behind the elites.

Multiple eyes and wings are commonly attributed to biblically accurate angels

The elites sit high above everyone else, surrounded by angelic imagery with "halos" behind their heads. It is a very clear show of their hubris, of their willigness to play god not only with their AUS, but with their own audience, deciding who lives or dies by the wave of a hand (i.e. executions).

When I describe "the elites" here, I am specifically referring to how they are portrayed as characters in my comic. This is not a comment on the real people behind these sonas.

If you read all of that, thanks! I put a lot of work into this comic, so i appreciate people taking interest in my process!

Kaufmo was a clown and Pomni is a jester

I wonder if it's related in some way? Like there's supposed to be a representative of each archetype and once the old "clown" got abstracted, the next human got made into a "clown" as well? (this could also explain the door portrait of a Queen version of Kinger)

Or maybe it's not that, but their clown nature is maybe related to being able to see the Exit? (We know that the forms people take do affect how they interact with the digital world, since Zooble seems built to come apart in pieces, Kinger calls himself royalty, and Ragatha flops like a ragdoll when Abstracted!Kaufmo slams her around)

To make sure this is random and I am not playing favorites, I am going to use the wheel of names to decide which mutual to talk about. Plus I thought it'd be fun!

@peppy-jester & @/hazbins-n-hellbons ─ Okay, so the first mutual the wheel gave me was Beanie. There is absolutely not a bad thing I can say about Beanie. I haven't interacted with her sideblog as much, but her Fizz is one of my favorites. Sure, he might not be the closest thing to canon, but fuck canon! Her Fizzie is funny, cute, and Ozzie and I both adore him. She brings the clown side of Fizz to life, always making jokes and doing silly things and I love to talk to her about her Fizz and how he is from how I write my own / what I'm used to when it comes to Fizzarolli. Not to mention she is a wonderful mun and I enjoy talking to her when we can. She's sweet and is constantly checking in when she can and remembers to (because let's face it, it's hard keeping up with all your friends all the time).

@electriccapitalist ─ I haven't had lots of interactions with Toxic outside of RP, but I adore seeing them on my dash. They are an amazing Vox and I can't wait to interact with them more. I still need to reach out about Ozzie & Vox things. They have been nothing but patient and super sweet from the little bit we've talked. Every time I see their Vox on my dash, I can picture Viv's version of Vox. Even their own hcs for Vox are just *chef's kiss*. I love to read them all when I can and their human!au Vox is also beautiful (plus who doesn't love Shell Overlord? HELLO?!?) and I am excited to do more with them.

@hzbinsouled ─ Moonbeam!! Moonbeam is a sweetheart. She has such great ideas and always has such fun verses for her muses. I adore talking to her ooc, despite not getting enough of it. Each version of her characters are just beautiful. They are so unique, but at the same time I can see the character, picture them in her writing. She lets me be insane and crazy about my plot ideas no matter how long I take to actually get to starters and replies. (I am still working on some ughreugh, sorry)

Lucifer born Aiden, was taken from a hospital as a baby to be raised in a commune /cult dedicated to raising the next king of hell in exchange for power and glory once hell on earth arrives /favors when they do go to hell.

He was renamed as one of the 7 lords of hell ( in their texts) Lucifer . The cult raised him with 6 other children , all given names of Beezlebub, belle Asmodeus and so on, he was raised in a competitive environment and shown animal and human sacrifices at a young age .

Each kid trying to be better than the other to gain the attention of “Father” Their leader and one day taking the throne .

Lucifer was always in Close competition with his ‘brother’ Satan, the two of them neck and Neck for the throne .

All the kids assumed that gaining the throne just ment they would be next to lead the cult and it inspired them , not knowing they were hurrying their own demise .

Lucifer beat out all the children against him and some of the adult cult members by killing or cohering them enough for them to be his followers , he gained a small following within in the cult by the time Father took notice of him.

He was full of pride till he saw that he would be the next one sacrificed, he didn’t want that he wanted to rule here not in hell or some other possibly fake land that might not exist !

He fought back leading his own rebellion against the cult , but was gunned down by raiding police when the commune was attacked on the same day, there was a mole among them.

The last thing he saw as he fell back onto the altar was the cop’s cross necklace , he vowed his revenge against heaven and hell.

Nature

Sun is the diurnal twin brother of Moon who feeds on the emotional distress (fear) of humans

Sun typically chooses one target at a time, often choosing those who’d be described as “scaredy-cats”. He sustains himself with the fear of others, and induces this fear in his victims by taking the form of their deepest, darkest fears

He’ll stick with one victim as long as it suits, only leaving them if they become boring or desensitised

Sun strictly targets adults, as he believes that scaring young children is immoral. He’d hate to be responsible for someone’s childhood trauma

Once Sun has targeted you, its VERY difficult to get rid of him

Sun never kills anyone, as he has no reason to and finds no joy in hurting people

Personality

Sun is energetic and fun-loving! He enjoys annoying people and creating mischief. He’s also a little bit sassy 👀

Unlike his stealthy counterpart, Sun enjoys toying with his prey, often playing pranks and spooking them throughout the day

He rarely forms bonds with his targets. He believes that humans and monsters are incapable of coming to mutual understanding of one another

Abilities

Sun can smell fear. This helps him find potential targets. In fact, he overall has a great sense of smell in general, which allows him to have a great sense of his surroundings without even having to look!

Sun has the ability to sense your biggest fear, and change his appearance to match

When Sun’s rays retract, he becomes invisible. When invisible, he becomes phantom-like, and can phase through just about anything.

Strengths

Sun performs best in the daytime and dim-lit areas, Since this is the only time when he’s visible, and can scare his victims.

Weaknesses

Sun doesn’t perform well in the dark. He can’t be seen when in the dark. He can walk around and interact with his surroundings just fine, but can’t be seen, which makes it harder to scare people

Sun’s ability to shape-shift has its limits. Although he can resemble your fears, he’s restricted by his natural form, and cant stray far from it. Because of this, he can’t remove his rays or crescent face. No matter what form he takes, he’ll always resemble his original form to an extent.

Although he rarely interacts with kids, Sun enjoys the idea of befriending them. He’s fascinated by their childlike wonder, and believes that if he were human, he’d probably be some kind of childcare worker. Maybe a daycare attendant perhaps?

The Ashiya Douman vs. Dioscuri anthology comic has such beautiful art by AU (@/delete_au). Douman invited Ritsuka to fall into hell with them & now they're the one inviting him. TYSM to Carli (@/carlikun) for translating it... I got stuck on some parts reading the JP version cuz of Douman's difficult, esoteric and archaic vocabulary... I got to clear things up reading the VN fan-TL, and it was interesting to see how it was translated in Viet, but yeah the EN fan-TL cleared up so many things for me.

OH WAIT lemme post that infodump from Discord I had about some cool OC ideas I had

So I have had slight story/worldbuilding ideas after the fact, but this was all the base stuff. the below is copied directly from Discord

Okay so I got some OC ideas from a dream

It was a little complex but let me just go over the basic outline

The thing took place in a castle repurposed into an theme park. there were a lot of circus/clown aesthetics, which ties in to one of the characters I dreamt about

The main character wasn't me. The person experiencing everything was this unnamed silver-haired femboy. But not much about their character was shown in the dream

The other characters were ghosts

The first one was named in the dream. His name was Castarian, and I LOVE HIM he's a sweetie. so nice and anxious and sad but still helpful to the protag. He stayed in one room and never showed himself, but did his best to direct and give hints to the protag. I was starting to get hints on why he hid himself when I woke up, but I still knew enough to come up with stuff on my own

The second one wasn't named, but I decided he should be called Drisco. This BITCH. he was trapped in a mirror, but an essential part of the dream was talking and interacting with him. he's one of the classic jester type characters, and he looks kinda like Harlequin (he has a black and white mask, his stupid little clown clothes are black and red, and he has the aesthetic of card suits). his main goal was to be freed from the mirror, but since the protag didn't trust him, he just played games with them in there instead

Despite him being dead and stuck in a mirror, he has incredible access to dark magic. literally the darkest part of the dream was making a goddamn blood sacrifice to him so the protag could revive someone from the dead. option one was the protag's own mother (if I remember correctly, the protag's main goal of the dream was to find someway in the castle to bring her back from the dead?), next was Drisco himself, and the third option was Castarian

the protag didn't trust their mother in Drisco's hands and didn't want to release him, so they chose Castarian. they wanted to see what he looked like and thank him for he help :)

Drisco just laughed and was like "Cassie? Him? Really? Okay, I'll go talk to him!"

and Drisco disappeared for a while to talk to Castarian. Castarian was not happy to talk to Drisco, but when Drisco talked about reviving him and why the protag wanted to do it, Castarian got really anxious about them seeing him.

Drisco got bored and reminded Castarian that in order to complete the ritual, they needed something intangible in exchange for reviving him. Castarian told him that he'll owe a favor, because he wants Drisco to cover up what he looks like with an illusion as well. Drisco started to demand more, but Castarian demanded he do that. Reluctantly, Drisco complied

and then I WOKE UP. So mad about that I wanted to interact with Castarian more :( he's my boy

but I did get a glimpse of what Castarian looked like! he was part human, part boar. kind of looked like how people draw Technoblade, but the burly version where he's big and furry. his fur was a light brown and he was very VERY fluffy and soft

he was so anxious to hide himself because he thought the protag would be scared of him. he was killed by people who thought he was a monster, stabbing him through the heart. so when Drisco did revive him, Drisco hid him in an illusion of a human. Drisco would pettily antagonize Castarian for this

Castarian used to be human, but he gained the favor of a fey who blessed him with the strength of a boar, and welp here he is. they also blessed him in another way- to help with how terrible he was at being assertive, every demand he made to someone magically enforce someone to do what he ordered. Castarian learned to be careful with his wording and instead phrase things as helpful suggestions so he didn't accidentally force someone to obey a command

but Drisco's illusion wasn't even Castarian's true human form? he had long messy hair as a human, but Castarian has become so anxious about his self-image that Drisco covers him up with a neater, clean-cut, "perfect" version of him.

my conclusions from the dream are that Castarian is a lovely boy. he's anxious because he's like 9 feet tall in his boar form and super burly and strong now and horrifying enough for people to kill him for being a monster. but he's so fluffy and so sweet,,, I wanna pet him fr

Drisco's a bitch. funky little gay guy with some nuance to him, but has that chaotic clown bastard energy.

he and Castarian's interactions have a weird divorced vibe. these bitches have so much tension between them and it's so funny. Drisco knows he'll get destroyed in a fight with Castarian (especially while he's in boar form) so he manipulates Castarian's self-hatred to make him feel bad :(

(I did have to put this under a Read More because of length 😅. But there's a TLDR at the end for anyone who wants the short version!)

Parson Pantomime is an OC I use for a few random settings. His core concept is that he’s a clown priest. Here’s the playlist for him (still a little under construction, but for the most part whole):

Parson is part of a big, multi-generational entertainer family. It started with his grandfather, who was motivated to take on that career after he received years of blessings from something, something that Grandad and the Parson family continue to worship as a god. Even though Grandad no longer feels directly connected to their Great Being, their former connection is the reason behind Grandad’s continued health and long lifespan.

Parson has grown up in this family, and he’s gone into the same profession and the same devout worshipping. But Parson is also a terribly curious learner, he loves to soak up knowledge. He became obsessed with the mystery of what the Great Being is, so he left home on a quest to discover the truth (and defeat any supernatural evil he comes across along the way, but that wasn’t a goal he originally had when he set out).

He has powers of his own, namely magic and a resistance to pain (more of a resistance to death, really. Semi-immortality). Parson believes, as does the rest of his family, that these are more gifts from their deity. Here’s where things start to seem fishy: Their great being is heavily associated with entertainment, theatre, circus and carnivals, etc. Parson’s magic primarily has imagery of storms, lighthouses, and the ocean.

The character playlist for Parson of course features a lot of songs with themes related to religion, stormy seas, and his search for the truth behind his god. There’s an overarching quest through the playlist for something, a desperation that can’t be satisfied until he knows, and he’ll stubbornly try to bulldoze through any obstacle that gets in his way. Fun little detail number two: A couple of those songs reference that quest being to find “her” or a woman.

The Pantomime Family’s ‘god’ is in fact an entity called The Mirth. It’s not a deity and has no consciousness to speak of, but it’s an embodiment of spreading good-cheer and laughter. Every few decades or centuries it chooses a host to personify it in the physical world. (For any DC Comics fans in the audience, The Mirth is inspired by the character Swamp Thing, who is the host of The Green [plants and nature])

Parson’s grandfather is a former avatar of The Mirth, which granted him immortality and a limited influence over reality (primarily conjuring things out of thin air) for the timespan that he hosted the being. The Mirth moved on naturally and all ties to the family are completely severed, except for any lingering effects of a human touched by pseudo-divinity, i.e. Grandad’s improved health and lifespan, which he then passed onto his children and grandchildren.

Fester Jester is the current Avatar of the Mirth, an undead clown who is virtually indestructible and has near-limitless power over reality as long as she is inside of a circus tent.

Here I have to introduce one of the most important people in Parson’s life who he has never met: Fester Jester.

FJ’s playlist contains several songs by the band Tardigrade Inferno. I love the band, their dark cabaret style has the right vibe for FJ, and I think the lead singer has a voice that would fit her. Parson has “The Tardigrade Song” on his playlist, because the lyrics fit, and because it’s an indirect connection to Tardigrade Inferno and the closely-associated Fester Jester. Fester Jester also has a song on her playlist by the same artist as The Tardigrade Song, linking her back to Parson.

The “she” personification (which I mentioned earlier) of what Parson is searching for is just as much Fester Jester as any ancient scroll or tapestry: a “she” (more specifically she/they) who literally personifies Parson’s Great Being. They have never met, but they feel a pull towards each other, something forging a deep connection between them, which at the same time repels them apart like two magnets with identical poles.

So spoiler alert for Parson’s overall story arc: There is no higher power giving him his magic. It’s not The Mirth, it’s not another deity who saw a hollow worshipper and decided to take advantage of the opportunity. As I said before, one of the gifts that the avatars receive is a limited influence over reality, being able to make changes based on the host’s will. Parson has an ember of pseudo-divinity within him, passed down from his grandfather. He is manifesting power into being through sheer, bull-headed willpower that is indistinguishable from known magic. The stormy theming in his power and in his character playlist, containing songs about vacant and abandoned places of worship (which are in fact very early tracks in the playlist) point towards this fact from the beginning.

Parson has NO IDEA that everything he believes isn’t true, or that when he does find the answer to his massive life-long quest, it’ll be unsatisfying and unrewarding. He has a big storm coming, and the man is going to have an existential breakdown when it hits.

TLDR: Parson’s character playlist not only represents who he is as a character, but provides clues towards the truth behind his deity and his quest.
