     ↳ “Hukkunud alpinisti hotell” 1979 (Dead Mountaineer's Hotel)

“Hukkunud alpinisti hotell” is an Estonian science fiction movie based on a novel of the same name. Police are called out to a lonely hotel in the Alps. When an officer arrives, everything seems to be alright. But strange things start to happen when an avalanche cuts them out from the rest of the world. 

The movie got over 44 000 viewers in Estonia and over 17 million over the Soviet union.

Actors in the movie were Uldis Pūcītis (as Insp. Peter Glebsky), Jüri Järvet (as Alex Snewahr), Lembit Peterson (as Simonet), Mikk Mikiver (as Hinckus), Kārlis Sebris (as Mr. Moses), Irena Kriauzaitė (as Mrs. Moses), Sulev Luik (as Luarvik), Tiit Härm (as Olaf Andvarafors), Nijolė Oželytė (as Brun) and Kaarin Raid (as Kaisa).

SINNING SAINTS AND SAINTLY SINNERS

If in North America the likelihood of purchasing a luxury product is much higher after the shopper has purchased an eco-friendly product beforehand, that logic is reversed in South-East Asia – there, purchasing an eco-friendly product elevates the likelihood of buying another one. [1]

Study participants are asked to agree or disagree with the following sexist statements:

Some/Most women are better off at home taking care of the children.

Men are more emotionally suited for politics than are some/most women.

The best job for some/most women is something like cook, nurse, or teacher.

Some/Most women need a man to protect them.

Some/Most women are not really smart.

Half of the participants received statements with somein the wording, half received statements with most in the wording.

Later, the participants were asked to judge whether a man or a woman was better suited to a traditionally male occupation and company. The researchers Monin and Miller showed that individuals who signaled their egalitarianism by disagreeing with sexist statements were subsequently more likely to recommend a man for a traditionally male job. They argued that disagreeing with sexist statements helped allay individuals’ concerns that their subsequent actions might be interpreted as morally questionable, thereby licensing their discriminatory behavior. [2]

 Third example.

Study participants were asked to write a story about themselves using positive words. Caring, generous, kind – those participants asked to use positive words were much less likely, indeed, five times less likely, to donate to a charity after writing the story. Those writing a story about themselves with words such as disloyal, greedy, mean, donated much more generously after the negative words threatened their self-image as a good human being. [3]

 Acts that cannot realistically be reconciled manage to be pressed into conguency in our fascinating minds. After a seemingly selfless act, we are quite likely to dive into the morally questionable.
