Tanjiro just refuses to have an edgey dark haired rival lmao. With Inosuke he's like. I was the eldest of six kids, I have more than enough patience to deal with you. Get friended, idiot, and Inosuke, on the receiving end of friendship for the first time in his life, is just not Sadboi enough to resist. Genya tries so hard to be an edgey sadboy, but unfortunately for him, Tanjiro has caught the scent of Teddybear Soft Sadboy and he is going to BULLY Genya into friendship if he has to. Yes it works what of it. Muichiro isn't trying to be Tanjiro's rival but Kotetsu has chosen violence and decides that yes, they should be and that Tanjiro *needs* to beat the shit out of Muichiro. As children do. Unfortunately, Tanjiro kickstarts Muichiro's character development by reminding him of who he used to be and now they're besties. Luckily, since Muichiro saves Kotetsu, they're even and now they're also besties.

I like to believe that after being rescued by Shinjuro and being taken care of by the Rengokus for a while, Obanai grew inspired by their strong enthusiasm and drive and decided that he too, would strive to become a demon slayer. 

He begins that journey by cutting his long hair with one of Shinjuro's spare katanas. Despite the cut being a little clumsy and giving him a sharp bob with some uneven strands, it didn't bother Obanai one bit. After all, this single action was the symbol of a tremendous change, the start of something completely new for him; a second chance at life. Freedom. Purpose. The solidified fact that from now on, he'll be okay. 

That moment became a very important memory for him. So when time would pass him by and his hair eventually grew a little too long, he'd always cut it in the exact same way to honor that memory of his resolve—uneven strands and all.
