Thursday 7th November 2024
Up in time to see the sunrise at approximately 06.10 this morning. The time doesn't seem to vary much, if at all! Packed up and said goodbye to the little cabin overlooking the fields and the cows. Dog came to say goodbye. Our host was not around, but we guessed where she might be, and rightly as it turned out. She was working at the popup Café at the Hot Springs, so we called in to make our farewells.
Then, to Woolworths for a big shop; we don't know where the next town with a decent sized supermarket might be. Sadly there was a cathartic moment as we realised that the bottle shop would not be open until 2pm!!!
We set off without the SB required for the trip.
The wonderful thing about Australia is that when you set out, you really often have no idea what you are going to see or do. Our stop for the night was to be in Daly Waters, a drive of 276kms south down the Stuart Highway sharing with the huge road trains that rumble between Adelaide and Darwin. There are just two stops on route: Mataranka and Larrimah; if you are not concentrating, you will miss them. Now, as we approached Mataranka, a great example of unplanned gems was tantalisingly on offer to the left; Bitter Springs in the Elsey National Park. Seven k down the road was an empty car park for the Springs. Just a short circular walk took us around these beautiful Thermal pools, 34 degrees the year round, deep and such clear azure blue waters that fish and turtles had no hiding place. The pools, bitter because of the sulphur content, were set within a tropical woodland of Palms and shrubs. It was a little touch of unexpected paradise that exemplifies exactly the point that Australia suddenly throws these opportunities out at you if you are prepared to take the invitation. We sat listening to the flow of the pool and ate our lunch. Rumour had it that if there was nothing else in Mataranka, there was a bottle shop within a rather scruffy but highly functional supermarket. Sure enough, there it was on the high street, and within the supermarket was a caged off area holding said liquids, guarded by a state policeman, there to check IDs before purchase. Remarkably, with such a small selection of SB, we were able to choose a couple of brands we are familiar with and so happy days. Larrimah, we almost missed. Then, another of those little bits of interest that would have been easy to miss. A simple wayside monument marks the spot where one Alexander Forrest, grade 1 explorer of his time, made it from Western Australia finding an impossible cross country/ mountainous route in 1879 for a telegraph cable to join with the north/ south telegraph running along the Stuart Highway route. An immense task for him, 4 others plus 2 aboriginal assistants to accomplish. So, the unassuming monument, a facsimile of an original telegraph pole, marking this amazing achievement that almost cost their lives. is almost certainly missed by many whizzing by at 130km/hr.
Now, our stop for the night would not draw the attention of any seasoned TV travel program. It is a truckstop truth be told, attracting road train personnel and tradies mainly. This place does not feature on a tourist's itinerary. It has that raw honesty about the place, basic, perhaps clean, functional, and it is what it is. We had a welcome beer on arrival, and Martine took a dip in the pool. Yes, it has a pool! Sexist, men only attitude, possibly, rough and ready definitely, but it has a bit of a charm and a place in the real Australia category. As we waited for the beer taps to be sorted, we spoke to a red-neck Australian sitting with his wife on bar stools. Because I'm interested in the itinerant nature of many of the people we meet, I just asked him what brought him to such a remote spot in NT. He looked puzzled for a moment and replied, mum and dad I suppose.
We had a burger meal in, and I hesitate to label it such, their restaurant, and it was great. I had what was described as 'The lot' which pretty much sums it up! These Australians can certainly eat, and they really appreciate meat!
ps. Apologies for yet more mention and photos of thermal pools. It's what is around in these parts.
pps. Loads of frogs outside of our plush trucker stop room! Clearly this sort of thing must appeal to truckers?

Okay, not to be a shill, but. My job is hiring. They seem to be going hard on hiring, starting up social media accounts to try to reach people.
But they aren't reaching out on Tumblr, which is a shame, because this is The Autism Website and the Otherwise Neurodivergent Website and the Chronic Illness/Disability website, and it really seems like these communities should have first dibs which is why I'm posting.
Do you like mildly repetitive tasks? Do you wanna sit at your computer and Do The Thing and maybe you don't talk to your coworkers and that's fine? (Or you can if you want!) Do you like working from home, for as many or as few or as variable whenever hours as you want/are able to?
The website ( https://dataannotation.tech/ ) says $15-$20+/hr. I suspect if they're phrasing it that way they have their reasons and I shouldn't say differently but look, I am making gestures and emphatic tones of voice and eyebrow-waggles at that +, okay?
The catches: 1) Standard gig-economy catch that it's no benefits, etc. 2) They're currently only hiring in US/UK/Canada/Australia/NZ/Ireland, but other folks can still sign up and be in the system for later. 3) It's AI. It's not the most famous name in AI, but some of the projects are for Big Tech Companies. I know folks have Strong Feelings about AI, and there have been a few projects that I've passed on. So I'm being upfront.
My experience with the job:
Sign up. Tell them about your skills, but it doesn't have to be a whole resume-ass thing, just "I have xyz interesting knowledge and skills" -- like if you have a degree, or that you like to write, or whatever. Take a qualification test.
Waaaaaait. Maybe you don't get in (and then they don't message you, which does suck of them). Maybe you do! Then you have a dashboard and it'll have links to things you can do (and what they pay, hourly or per-task). And there's a Slack for some of the projects, that's about half asking questions and half "look at this ridiculous thing the AI did."
For me, right now, they are all some variation of "give the AI a task/ask it a question; select the better answer." Sometimes there's "help us make training data for the AIs." Sometimes there are more qualification tests to get into more projects.
Record how much time you spend, report it, wait for them to validate the time (~1 week).
Cash out with Paypal.
Ask questions and I'll try to answer!
#addie talks#actually autistic#neurodivergent#work#working while neurodivergent#AI#oh god all the worky job-search-y tags are so gross

Lessons Learned (The End)
After 18 weeks of living in Sydney, my time has come to an end. It’s common to hear that peoples’ study abroad experiences were some of the best times of their lives, and I am honored to now fall into that cliche. I think the hardest thing in the coming weeks will be to not burst out into conversation about how much I loved Australia and all my travels (as well as relearning to walk on the right side of the sidewalk). My time here has truly become such a big part of who I am, and I will never let that go. I am comforted by the fact that I will one day return to Coogee beach, hopefully for even more than a few months, and nothing will get in the way of that.
I think the best way to wrap up my time abroad would be to summarize some of the biggest lessons I have learned.
Have fun planning trips, but don’t forget to schedule in time to rest. If you’re the average student studying abroad, you probably want to see as many places as possible in a short period of time. This means packing trips with activities and sightseeing. And, don’t get me wrong, I am all for getting the most out of your trip, but it’s not worth sacrificing hours of sleep for a flight that's $10 cheaper and will leave you feeling tired all day which will likely seep into the rest of the days. This tip might not apply to everyone, but if you’re like me and need your 6-8 hrs of sleep, I promise you won’t enjoy your trip any less if you choose to sleep in a little.
Don’t skimp on the local traveling! I know so many people who study abroad and only plan weekend travels to other countries or cities before even considering looking in their own backyard. Don’t get me wrong, Sydney can be appreciated in just a few days by the average tourist, but locals have so many different neighborhoods with unique cuisines, activities, and events to choose from. Just choose a direction, find a bus or train, and see where you end up in an hour! I would never have ended up at Watson’s bay if not for this philosophy (see last picture of previous post).
Adaptability and patience are key. Especially when traveling with friends, there are a lot of thoughts and opinions in the air. Learning to take into account different desires and compromise takes time. The patience comes into play when you’re waiting for everyone to get out of the house! The reason my hostel’s trips were (more or less) successful was because everyone was flexible, made sure to stick together, and the people who didn’t help in the planning process knew they were in no place to complain.
Where you live matters. A lot. While most schools offer international students housing, this was not the case with UNSW. My choice to live on Coogee Beach was definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made. There is simply no feeling like walking out of the building you live in, looking out into the vast ocean, and just sensing your smile grow like a rainbow appearing after a storm. Do research on your options, try to find roommates, and live it up!
These are the most important of countless lessons I learned while living abroad the last 4.5 months. I now look forward to re-acclimating myself to the US and relearning how to walk on the right side of the sidewalk. Thank you for tuning in with me for the past weeks – I hope one day, you will find yourself in Sydney. Cheers!

Is a Business Management Diploma Your Pathway to Career Success?
Decades ago, the primary focus when starting a business was managing finances. However, today, the landscape has evolved significantly. Now, the focus extends beyond managing finances to overseeing systems and processes for efficiency, navigating diverse client relationships, leading teams to achieve collective goals, and optimizing overall business productivity. While a business leader may naturally acquire some of these skills over time, mastering management requires specialized expertise. This is why many invest their resources in management training courses.
Whether you're an aspiring, new, or seasoned manager, we will explain why investing in a Business Management Diploma is a valuable decision today.
The Value of a Business Management Diploma
A Business Management Diploma is invaluable in today's dynamic business environment that strives for agility, adaptability, and strategic acumen. It provides a comprehensive understanding of key business operations, including finance, marketing, HR, and strategic planning. This credential serves as a springboard for career growth, offering pathways from entry-level positions to executive leadership roles and entrepreneurship. Graduates gain essential skills, leadership development, and networking opportunities, empowering them to excel in diverse professional settings and drive organizational success.
How can you nurture your management expertise?
Continuous learning and skill development are essential for managers to stay effective in their roles within an organization. Undertaking a basic long-term course like a degree or a shorter program such as a diploma or certificate in Management can provide clarity on one's position and responsibilities within the organization. Choosing a reputable academic destination is crucial, with respected institutions in countries like the UK, USA, Australia, and India offering globally recognized degrees using innovative teaching methods. These methods now extend to online education, allowing individuals to study around work or home commitments without compromising quality.
Leading course providers in the UK, like EDVORO, offer many programmes, from diploma courses to comprehensive degree programs, through their innovative online learning platform. If you are ready to embark on senior management positions, consider EDVORO's Diploma in Management online for a high-quality education to kickstart a successful career.
How EDVORO Prepares You for Various Industries?

The ILM Level 6 Diploma in Management programme, also equips students with foundational knowledge to embark on entrepreneurial ventures. Credits earned in this course can be applied toward Level 7 qualifications, serving as a valuable transition for learners advancing from Level 5 to Level 7 ILM qualifications. Graduating with this diploma in management online ensures a well-rounded understanding of the business landscape, covering key functions in operations management, research methodologies, and enhancing organizational efficiency. This knowledge prepares individuals for senior management roles in various industries and provides opportunities for specialization within the field.
Why should you take the ILM Level 6 Diploma in Management?
Managers are frequently promoted internally or based on industry experience. So, it is not always mandatory to specialize in management. However, being a trained manager holds distinct advantages over being an accidental one. By enhancing your knowledge and expertise, you strengthen your resume and earn recognition as an expert in the eyes of employers. Moreover, obtaining a British qualification from a renowned academic institution like EDVORO can give you the gift of boundless career opportunities in the field of management.

Today's Focus
12.19.23 - It is my last day at the office before the holiday, so I'm an elf! My supervisor loves it lol. You can thank my dad for convincing me to buy it from the thrift store we hung out in waiting for my sister to pick us up from the lab.
Work - I ended up spending a bunch of my day yesterday working on a ToC and a ToA for a motion SJC needed to submit, and I got three physical case files done along with a few efiles. I have one efile left to save (the motions SJC had me working on) and one new case file for JMK to both put into NYM and create a physical file for. Plus I have two (2) hrs of ethics training to attend virtually at 1p.
Background Noise - Well okay I start with 117 on the Watch Later, but that's because I added a lot of short lists when I figured out a presenter I like has been working for another channel. The problem is I'm probably not going to be able to watch anything during the ethics webinar.
I think I watched something like 9 videos yesterday? I'm hoping to do better today.
Study - Well I finished re-organizing news articles just in time for article day so I know what my plans are at least.
FBI report on the murder of Emmett Till - persons of interest
Articles on the cost of living in Australia
Articles related to Moms for Liberty
Pages of the Glass Report
Saved 'good news' articles
Old articles - specifically articles saved from before 2000
News articles from the 2000s
Three of the saved essays/articles in my folders
I'm trying to do as many of the things mentioned here as possible and just...see how far I get.
Yesterday I did do more than just organizing; I read three of the reported persons of interest in the Emmett Till FBI report, and a couple of articles related to the cost of living in Australia. Not much but better than nothing at all!
Extras - All the chores are done; the dinner is an easy beef stir fry. Heck, the frozen veggies I bought for it even came with a sauce! This should allow me to write some more, which I really need to do because I've been feeling savage recently which probably means my brain is looking for dopamine by fighting on the internet. To cope with that, I'm going to focus on drafting & posting more ranting essays.

about ten years ago I was on a train between my home town and the city where I now live (in Australia), and the train conductor came round to check our tickets and he was wearing a short-sleeved shirt and had "Arbeit macht frei" tattooed on his fucking ARM and he must have counted on people either not knowing the german or not knowing the phrase: he saw me looking at his arm and my eyes getting wider and wider and he hustled the fuck out of there. I sent an email to the train company about it and got some piece of HR idiocy in return, but I never saw him on that service again. I guess other people spoke up as well. A short-sleeved shirt, fucking hell. They are getting bolder.
Remember kids, Nazis don't deserve their kneecaps.
Also if any of these are incorrect pls lemme know

Five Essential Payroll Strategies for 2025
As we look towards 2025, payroll professionals face new challenges from advancing technologies and evolving regulations. Payroll is not just a back-office function—it’s crucial to a company’s financial health and employee satisfaction. Here are five key strategies for Australian payroll departments to focus on to ensure compliance, efficiency, and value creation in the year ahead:
1. Embrace Payroll Technology and Automation Investing in modern payroll technology is vital for efficiency in 2025. Payroll systems should integrate with HR, finance, and timekeeping to streamline operations. Scalable software with Employee Self-Service (ESS) portals and real-time reporting capabilities will allow employees to manage personal details and view payslips easily. Automation should also cover compliance tracking, ensuring systems remain up-to-date with legislative changes.
2. Focus on Compliance and Risk Management Payroll compliance remains a challenge due to Australia’s evolving tax, superannuation, and award regulations. Payroll teams must conduct regular audits, especially for businesses operating in multiple states, and invest in ongoing staff training to stay informed about regulatory changes. Protecting sensitive employee data from fraud and cyber threats is equally important.
3. Continuously Improve Payroll Processes Payroll teams should consistently refine their processes to eliminate inefficiencies. Automating manual tasks like data updates and discrepancy reconciliations will save time and reduce errors. Process audits can highlight areas for improvement, and benchmarking costs against industry standards helps identify where savings can be made. Moving from paper to electronic payslips is a prime example of boosting efficiency.
4. Strengthen Fraud Prevention and Data Security As digital systems become more prevalent, payroll departments must ramp up fraud prevention efforts. This includes implementing internal controls, conducting regular audits, and using advanced security measures like multi-factor authentication and encryption. Regular monitoring for red flags in payment records will also help mitigate fraud risks.
5. Enhance Employee Experience and Transparency Employees value clear, timely communication about their pay. Providing easy access to payroll information through ESS portals and ensuring accurate, transparent payslips can reduce queries and build trust. Keeping employees informed of changes, such as superannuation updates, will foster a positive workplace culture and improve satisfaction.
As payroll becomes more complex, a forward-thinking approach is essential. By focusing on technology, compliance, process improvement, fraud prevention, and employee experience, payroll professionals can add strategic value to their organisations in 2025 and beyond.

Small to medium-sized enterprises, in particular, benefit from outsourcing HR functions, gaining access to the expertise usually available only to larger companies.

Additionally, HR outsourcing Australia reduces costs associated with hiring in-house HR personnel and maintaining HR infrastructure.
Australian HR outsourcing providers are also well-versed in local labor laws, minimizing compliance risks for businesses. From implementing new policies to managing employee benefits, these services enhance efficiency and ensure legal alignment. In Canada, maternity benefits are provided through Employment Insurance (EI). The benefits include:
Maternity Benefits: Up to 15 weeks of benefits at 55% of your average weekly earnings, up to a maximum amount.
Parental Benefits: Additional benefits can be claimed by either parent, offering up to 40 weeks of leave (standard) or 69 weeks (extended) combined with maternity benefits.
1.4 Australia
In Australia, paid parental leave is available through the government’s Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme. Eligible employees receive:
PPL Payment: Up to 18 weeks at the national minimum wage (approximately AUD $812.60 per week as of 2024).
Employers may also provide additional paid maternity leave, which varies by organization.
2. Factors Influencing Maternity Pay
2.1 Employer Policies
Many employers offer maternity pay that exceeds statutory requirements. It’s essential to review your company's maternity leave policy to understand the specific benefits you are entitled to.
2.2 Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility for maternity pay often depends on factors such as length of employment, earnings, and whether you meet specific legal requirements. Check with your HR department to confirm your eligibility.
2.3 Country-Specific Regulations
Different countries have varying regulations regarding maternity pay. Familiarize yourself with the local laws and benefits to ensure you understand your entitlements.
