I love komaeda but for some reason that love manifests exclusively as death wishes. I see him and start giggling and kicking my feet and then the first thing I say is "omg I hope he gets more illnesses 😍"

Genuinely curious about how people look at Ishimaru's values.

It's well established that he has a grudge against geniuses and that he views himself as an ordinary man who can use pure hard work and effort to surpass them. He also mentions this in his last Free Time Event:

That seems to imply that talent = genius. Which makes sense since talent is an inherent skill, not something you work towards.

However, every bonus mode (school mode, UTDP, summer camp) has him mention talent in a positive light and only makes vague reference to his work ethic and dreams of building a better society. That makes it sound like talent doesn't equal genius. Which could also be possible - talented people can work hard - but it's a little surprising that someone so entrenched in a black and white thinking has that viewpoint.

Has anyone else put any thought into this? Obviously the bonus modes aren't truly canon but, to me, it seems like an odd hole in Ishimaru's character.

what was komaeda like during his school years at hpa?

bc there are contradicting stuff in the series

in sdr2, it was because of the stress of the killing game that caused him to be active in causing mayhem, like convincing ppl to kill in ch1 and 2

in island mode, he's pretty harmless, he just says some out of pocket stuff from time to time

but in makoto's secret file, komaeda was "constantly getting into trouble, so much so that it concerned the headmaster"

and idk if he's just being weird, or he just straight up doing criminal stuff in hpa

(if the former was true, i find it ao funny bc in the short story, the board of directors, four old men, shuddered at the mere thought of this guy)

returning back to topic, i wonder what kind of environment hpa actually is. bc it is described as the most peaceful and hopeful time before junko came along. we never actually saw what its actually like inside

if its a really stressful environment, almost matching the stress of the killing games, then it would make sense that komaeda would start shit up; otherwise it doesnt

in the dr3 anime, it really seems like its a very laid back school, where the stress only came from the examinations that come from time to time. other than that, the students just do their own thing in the meantime, i dont think they even hold classes

well, i dont think the dr3 anime is canon, cuz its not written by the dr team nor kodaka

I started writing a fic once about how i think Komaeda’s school life was like before Hope’s Peak. Its basically abandoned at this point but I still think about it a lot…

I basically see him as having a very uneventful school time where basically everyone avoids and ignores him and he’s just completely and utterly alone the whole time. He sits alone and no one cares. He comes in with so many bruises and injuries his home room teacher has stopped asking at this point. His homeroom teacher has given up on him completely, actually, because despite his abilities he refuses to make anything of himself. He’d have a social worker who hardly cared and would only show up to check a box and make sure he was still alive. No one would even have the decency to bully him. They tried once and it was boring because he wouldn’t fight back. He’d be a void of a person a shadow in the classroom. I even imagine any photos that are taken of the class he’s inexplicably blurred or covered or left out. Completely and utterly alone no matter what.
