SNARRY FOR BEGINNERS

Are you a bit Snarry curious, but also sorta wary and unsure where to start? Good news: I have some recs for you!

Snarry is a tricky ship for some folks. All of its most problematic themes are what draw me in personally, but that's not to say there aren't some safe places to start for a newcomer!

What I've chosen are:

Nothing too long, so you can get a little taste to see how you feel. So I'm looking at 50k or under.

Nothing "problematic" or as few "problematic" themes as I can get. No underage. No power imbalance. No consent issues. (...or at least nothing egregious haha.)

Works that also maintain some integrity to Harry and Severus' individual characters, and the tension between them. If I play it too safe it won't feel properly Snarry to me! Half the fun is the tension between them, so we must keep that!

So...If you wanna check some out, keep reading!

An Awkward Customer

Why Read? A nice rom-com based on the prompt: "Harry makes a bet with someone that he could seduce anyone if he put his mind to it, and that someone selected for him is Snape, naturally." Severus owns an apothecary so we get some nice flirting at the workplace!

Why Read? Surely fluff is a safe place to start! And as a person who isn't often drawn to fluff, this is one I love, and is a comfort read of mine. Very sweet and silly and a great place to dip your toes in!

Why Read? I've reread this fic countless times over the years and it's still such a fun read. If you like arranged marriage/courtship fics, this is the one for you!

The Interrupted Kiss

Once upon a time, Severus Snape shared a kiss with Harry Potter. Then Harry had disappeared after killing the Dark Lord, leaving Severus the reluctant darling of the Wizarding world. When Dumbledore insists on throwing a ball in Severus’s honour, Severus is convinced the world has gone completely mad. But when he comes across an ashy-faced young man whose half-answers about his identity haunt his every thought, Severus realizes that a ball might be the least of his worries.

Why Read? What safer place to start than a fairytale? If we ignore that most original fairytales are pretty effed up, actually. This is a Cinderella-inspired work. Severus is the Prince (naturally), and Harry is the wandmaker (cool career, right??) who attracts many cute animals! (He does not sing to them, though; what a shame!)

This Time of Ours

Severus Snape wasn’t supposed to die. Neither was Harry Potter.

Why Read? Emynn has plenty of great Snarry fics, which is why you're getting 2 recs! We start with some fun snarking, move onto sweet bonding, and then...second chances! Very light, enjoyable read.

Why read? It's very Harry-centric. It's Harry's POV, and very about Harry and his journey as he moves to a new place, in a new phase of his life, and settles in. There's an existing connection and attraction between Harry and Severus, and one that unfolds so sensually and beautifully. Harry's very much an adult and mature and has lived a lot of life when he and Severus reunite.

Rapture

Why Read? It's a classic! It is very beloved in the community for good reason. Gorgeous writing. The relationship develops so naturally, and the pure emotion will knock your socks off. Potentially the best place to start for Snarry. I'm not a big fan of time travel, but I love this fic!

Revealed, Gently

by sarkysue. Rated: T. Words: 22,243. Postwar. Romance. Humor.

Snape isn’t dead, he’s back at Hogwarts and in need of an assistant. Coincidently, Harry is hanging around Hogwarts, reluctant to move on with his life. Cue sniping and snarking, tears and laughter and, possibly, love.

Why Read? It's fun. It's cute. It's a bit silly. It makes great use of how not easy it would be for these two, and having a blast with it! There is arguably a power imbalance what with Harry being Snape's teaching assistant, but it doesn't really feel like much of one. It's only a great opportunity to force these 2 to hang out long enough to fall in love!

The Sleeping Prince

It's hard to ignore your past — and impossible to do so when you can't remember your future. But a meddlesome portrait, a dragon with an ancient grudge and true love's kiss teach an unlikely Prince that a regrettable past doesn't have to mean an unhappy ending.

Why Read? While probably the most questionable on the list, it's still fairly tame. Student Harry and his developing feelings for Student Severus, who is deaged postwar. It feels very much like a feel good teenage romance, wherein the characters very much act their age, awkwardness and all! The only caveat being things change a bit at the end, but there's no underage and it is rated Teen, to be fair!

The Beating of This Fragile Heart

by Writcraft (@writcraft.) Rated: E. Words: 33,146. Hurt/comfort. Fluff & angst. Serious Injury. Romance.

After the war, the last thing Severus Snape needs is the memory of a fleeting wartime kiss and a very persistent Harry Potter thwarting his plans to live a peaceful and solitary life. It’s only when Harry’s life is endangered that Severus is finally forced to confront his feelings head on.

Why Read? If you're coming from Drarry, you might be familiar with Writ's works! They've written plenty for drarry and some rare pair works, and they are a fantastic storyteller. This fic in particular is very romantic. Full of hesitancy and insecurity, and seeing how the relationship begins and how it unfolds and changes (for the better) when Severus is forced to deal with his issues. It's quite a journey but so full of love from start to finish and it's just so lovely and full of feels and one I return to again and again.

The Harry characterization!!!! Their dynamic. Seriously surreal fic. Intense. A lot of feeling w/o a lot of words. Love the HBP vibes. There had to be some other way to solve everything; some way other than death and desolation and the ruins of a room with a green bed. This fic is from the Snarry Games Team Angst.

Also dead. Of course the author is really cruel and we keep hoping maybe maybe it's going to work out. Nope! Dead! But the fic is super brilliant with how it does a lot of plot twists/tricks to get you hoping. Suspense like a Halloween movie!!! One of my all time fav Snarry fics. Really intense! Also from Snarry Olympics Games Team Angst.

Rec - Harry needs a powerful wand to defeat Voldemort. So of course Snape makes him a wand from his own heartstring. Fairytale horror. Also the hottest shaving scene. Hot shaving kink + human sacrifice is the vibe here. Also Snape the competent wandmaker! Gosh lovelovelove this fic. This is from Snapecase fest. The 2023 fest is going on right now. So definitely go check it out if you want new fic!

Rec - Harry falls into a DE trap. Snape saves him. But the death is 100x worse than his canon death. Read this when you want to get wrecked. Really romantic horror. Also the emotions are real Snape style. Also Snape is ultra competent and doing really scary magic for good/bad reasons. One of my fav fics of all time. You just get pulled into the fic. Get wrecked big time Oldschool Snarry Wartime style. This fic is also from the Snarry Games Team Angst.

I don't have an official rec list, and I don't read HP stories too much anymore but there's a couple of authors I'll always promote because they're very much amazing, and are so mind-bogglingly talented. Most of them are primarily tomarry writers.

Severus_divides_into_H is an incredibly gifted writer. She's just finished one of the best, recent tomarry stories in the fandom, and has started her new one! I'd recommend checking out her tumblr as well (@k-s-morgan). Katrin is a beautiful human being and deserves all the love and support.

The_Fictionist is another legend. Heaps of really unique story ideas, and the writing quality is top-tier (Tumblr is here).

slex (slexenskee) is another one - though it's not just tomarry. Lots of crossovers with HP if that's of interest as well! (Tumblr is here).

Epic Solemnity (Dark_Cyan_Star) was a huge inspiration to me when I started out. She's recently moved on to writing her own original stuff, which while I haven't read much of, is really highly rated by a lot of readers. (Tumblr is here).

And I'd be sinner not to mention Tsume_Yuki. Absolutely mad lass, who never fails to make me cackle. Plenty of different fandoms to enjoy, not just HP - the Naruto ones live in my head rent free and I love them. (Tumblr is here).

It’s been a quiet week for me as I plug away on my current Tom Riddle/Edmund Pevensie project, but what should happen this morning except that I’m given a gift based on my first crack at the pairing!

Tom Riddle doesn’t get sent back to Wool’s once wartime panic starts up—he’s sensibly remanded into the custody of a volunteer with a house in the country, like all London children. A series of summers in his friendship with Edmund Pevensie, or, the story where Tom Riddle gets a partly-decent childhood.

I wrote the original Routines about two years ago now, at the tail end of 2021, hot off of making a rec list for Tom Riddle crossover stories and having just written my first. Tom and Edmund as two evacuated children during the second world war was a natural direction to take the ship, and I fell in love with them together as I let their summers play out, seeing how their affinity grew as they each experienced their separate magical adventures. I adore looking at the mundane worlds in portal fantasies. I was so happy for their mundane worlds to intersect. Routines is the story which brings me the most comfort on reread; their friendship is just that reassuring.

I’d heard from JocundaSykes about the possibility of recording something months ago, but had sort of forgotten about it since. What a delightful surprise to get the notification! She’s extremely well-known in HP slash fandom for recording professional and beautiful podfic, including some truly impressive projects taking on six-figure stories. Routines might not be that long, but it’s still 17k! I am so honored for it to have been chosen. There’s nothing quite like hearing “Pevensie” in her accent. It’s well worth a listen for the reading quality alone.

This does mean I have to stop making tiny phrasing edits when I reread. Aaah!

That Grindeldore fic! <3

Lots of things to say about Sultan & Scherazade... like the imagery, omg... but one of the images that stuck with me is the total joy/innocence Albus has in the first chapter when he is asking Gellert to wear the dress. I feel like it cuts to the heart of the series.

"Wear this!" he demanded, exuberant in passion as he was in all else.  He had flung a checkered dress at me. Bright yellow and white peacocks were embroidered dainty on its squares. It was not the first time he had embarked on outrageous exploits in our tryst. The travails of taking a lover whose mother was a whore. He had no sense nor shame.

Like whether they are under Kendra's roof or in the churches of Europe, Gellert just doesn't stop seeing that part of Albus where he was the holiest heart on that sacred ground, hallowed by a crown of June's sun stained by the colors of glass, and around, around, flew each sweet sound, now mixed, now one by one. 

Idk. That fic makes me feel Feels. Also Gellert giving mercy to Princip in the prison... Had he left behind a sweetheart? Who was his Josephine? Napoleon had died alone, in anguish, on Saint Helena. 

Also I find that fic a hard read because of the WWII history Albus and Gellert are witnessing on their Church Enemies with Benefits Tour.

A red field, with a white disc with a black swastika.  At world's turn, a man that had forgotten kissed me in parting.

Also the total contrast between Dumbledore and Voldemort. Also the carp.

From the west, he had come, this boy, and his magic had been specks upon the fierce gusts of winds through the narrow mountain passes of the Dinarides, and then a mist upon the ash woods that had woken to him, and then it had moved through stone and sorcery, until at last he had stepped into my cell, with carp on Christmas Eve.

Also ash/hawthorn/holly. It is hawthorn that heals the human heart :/ Oof the imagery is something I am never going to forget from that series.

Fic recs

I read a couple of fantastic fics recently, and they all deserve some love. So, giving them a shoutout. As Moments Do by @thecat-isblogging-blog

Canon compliant. Remus Lupin centric fanfic that follows him through OOTP and HBP. Chapter 3 has been updated and here is a chilling excerpt of Remus channeling his "Goodbye Peter" side:

Keep up, Peter. You’ll get lost. James would say. Wrong way, Peter.

Reaching the end of the platform Lupin called out in unison with James’ ghostly voice:

“Wrong way, Peter.”

Peter stopped in his footsteps, shoulders tensed just as Lupin pointed his wand to his exposed back.

Peter’s rat sense seemed to be keenly threaded to him. He turned to peer over his shoulder, the sliver of moonlight catching his nervous, watery eyes.

The Sultan and Scheherazade are One by eldritcher Grindeldore, with the most fantastically careful imagery. I am so taken by the prose of this author. Excerpt:

"I will build you a Rome," I promised him. 

"We will build us a Rome," he corrected me, placing an easy hand on mine.

"The Rome that the ancients yearned for, egalitarian," I murmured.

Our dreams were one, and our wills twined.  

Albus's hands came to clasp mine in his. The magic of him seeped into me, and mine unto him. 

Trothed became he and I, to man and cause, under a yew tree.

A short folk horror story with Merope Gaunt, Tom Riddle Snr, and of course Voldemort.

Excerpt:

Merope has seen the little boy too. 

He comes to her window - she sleeps on the floor of the kitchen, while Morfin and Marvolo sleep in their one, tiny bedroom - and peers in. He has his father’s face, and his father's jet black hair, but his skin is unnatural, waxy and snow-pale, and his eyes are as red as blood.

‘I created you,’ she says to him. ‘I dreamed of you and now you are real.’

The boy shakes his head. ‘I am not yet real, because my father does not believe. You must make him.’

The train stops with a shudder and he nearly loses his precarious footing. Turn around , James says. Turn around now. You’ll go mad in there again.

Sirius laughs under his breath. Like anyone would notice. Besides, this is for you.

The James in his mind huffs and shuts up. Spilled out onto the platform, Sirius once again comes face to face with his own mugshot, a faded print on a tattered wanted poster.

Dropped out of school, he thinks. Scandalous, delinquent. What d'you reckon? he asks the Ginny in his head. Harry Potter, troubled dropout? Do anything for you? The Ginny in his head laughs.

My first introduction to Squash was a mention of her 22 Slash Fics for 22 Years (though it was 21, at the time) rec list. Then I had to look for more and was suitably impressed! Very thoughtful, detailed rec lists; but best of all, such good taste! Squash's recs were right up my alley! Even now, I don't even blink when Squash recs things, I just blindly open links and Mark For Later. (Or, for non-AO3 links, I save them to my Pocket app.)

Then one day, Squash recced Teardrop In Your Palm on her New HP Slash Fics Published in 2021 rec list!! Which made me feel quite famous, let me tell you. And insanely flattered. "This person who recs such good fics!!! Recced!!!! MY???? FIC??????" (Am I super casually sneaking extra recs into the Introduction section? Well spotted! Yes. Yes I am.)

Of course, Squash is more than just a gourd with good taste in fics. She is a very intelligent, enthusiastic, supportive fan. Big love for fandom, the community, the history, the culture, and more! She is openminded and openhearted. A rockstar cheerleader. She leaves such sweet comments! She has read a lot, and somehow finds the time to do all of this stuff, even with life being hecka weird and rough!

Best of all, Squash is a good friend. I can fearlessly barge into her DMs and blather about my woes, various dramas, and worst of all: really humiliating fangirl shenanigans. If I can shamelessly fangirl in front of anyone, it's Squash! She is a great listener. Very compassionate and supportive and understanding. She is an absolutely fantastic HUMAN above all else, and I just adore her!

10 Albus Dumbledore Slash Recs

I do need some good Dumbledore slash fics in my life, and Squash provides. Such good fics on this list! Especially In Infinite Remorse of Soul, which I'm obsessed with.

10 Intro Slash Fics With 2nd person POV

I love this! Second person POV can be such a difficult one to pull off writing, or to properly get into reading, but when it is done well, it is done very well! And we can all thank Squash for putting together a list of goodies for us!

10 Snarry Recs with Sexposition

What a great list, wow. Snarry, for one thing, our shared OTP! But also...sexposition! Nice. Also: so many great fics. Wow wow wow. 10/10 rec list. (Haha. 10/10 for the 10 Snarry Recs. Look at me go.)

Your top ten recs (hp) if you have a limit of one favorite fic by your favorite authors...

:D I feel I have a list for a similar concept but I love reccing this one since my favorites change depending on my reading mood. Some AO3 fics off the top of my head. Definitely check the author warnings. Generally the fics which stay with me are strong dynamics and really lucid on prose :D

Rinsbane - King of Fat Snape/Harry, Snape/Voldemort, Snape/Lucius Malfoy. More character study than romance. I love the imagery in this <3

@danpuff-ao3 - Contempt. Snape/Harry. I love the intensity of the emotional war in this one. The characterizations are everything <3

@kellychambliss - Trainspotting. McGonagall/Hooch. This is my favorite what-if fic of all time <3 Perfect balance between dark and hopeful.

@perverse-idyll - When the Rose and the Fire Are One Snarry. Nothing really landed this hard for me in my reading experience. The emotions, the complexity, the conscience wars, the buildup, the resolution. I really love the other PI fics but I feel total emotional connect with this fic because this was my first PI read and it pretty much Snarry defined for me after that to the point where I stopped reading the pairing because I was falling into the trap of comparing other fics to this one and feeling unsatisfied. I am more and more in love with it when I reread it especially after getting older <3

drawlight - Suspiria. Snarry. Snarry is a really intense, high chemistry dynamic with a lot of baggage and violent emotional warfare inside their heads and also between them. This fic pretty much hits those 110%. Also 2nd person pov masterclass <3

eldritcher - Almagest. Harrymort, Riddledore. The classic slash masterclass as far as I am concerned. It really takes the slash longfic premise and elevates it with stunning poetic prose, a towering plot which somehow works like magic and characterizations that emphasize humanity's flaws and power of love. E has other great fics I love but it's always going to come back to Almagest if I am asked to pick because this is cinema.

calrissian18 - Upon My Word And Honor Draco/Percy. OMG. Calrissian's prose is super gorgeous and I really love the what-ifs and the beautiful tragedy of this fic. I feel this fic lingered with me for ages after reading. It's super haunting <3

Delphi - Remember Me to Cheetham Hill. Snape/Filch. Delphi is love, Delphi is life and also their Snape characterization is super intense. You just feel for him and at the same you are pretty scared of him. I really get the feel of Omar Little from The Wire (HBO) when I read Delphi's Snape. Super incisive, super brilliant, really understandable and at the same time super complicated <3

LoupGarou - Dangling Conversation. Snarry. I really love dark suspense fics and this one is incredible with the buildup and the resolution.

@thistlecatfics - Alphard's Favourite. Peter/Sirius, Alphard/Sirius. Total darkfic mode. I really love the intensity and no way out vibes of this fic. I am just in love with the psychological dynamics. <3
