Chapter 29 Beneath the Surface: "Absence and Presence"

First day of classes, Severus and Harry navigate this first day apart. Harry enjoys the classes and being back home, but there's something lurking, something beneath the surface...

Rating: 18+ for strong language and adult themes

Severus’s shoulders stiffened, and he exhaled sharply. “Can we not talk about this?”

Harry’s heart gave a small lurch at the quiet desperation in Severus’s voice. He wasn’t entirely sure what Severus was asking for, but the way he spoke—so tired, so tense—made something twist painfully inside of him.

He softened his tone. 

“Okay, we won’t.” Harry’s voice softened, but the silence between them stretched, thick with unspoken words. 

After a moment, he asked quietly, “Do you want me to go?”

The words hung in the air, and Harry wasn’t entirely sure why he’d asked. He was just trying to listen, trying to give Severus what he needed. 

But he wasn’t expecting this.

Severus’s gaze flicked to Harry, his face still drawn with exhaustion and pain. There was a flicker of something in his eyes—something raw and longing, something that spoke of a deep yearning. His grip on Harry’s hand tightened, but his words came out as a mere whisper.

“Don’t… please,” Severus muttered, his voice almost strangled with vulnerability.

Before Harry could say anything, Severus shifted, his body trembling slightly. It was as if the weight of his headache and his emotions had become too much to bear. 

Severus’s fingers twitched, his arm stiffening as if he might pull back. Then, as if overwhelmed by the weight of his own need, he reached for Harry’s arm, tugging him closer. His movements were hesitant, betraying a quiet war between fear and the need for warmth.

The action was so sudden, so desperate, that Harry barely had time to respond before Severus curled himself into Harry’s chest, his face buried against Harry’s shoulder.

Harry stiffened for a moment, caught off guard by the sheer intensity of the gesture. Severus was now clinging to him, pressing his body closer with a quiet need that Harry hadn’t anticipated. His breath hitched, warm against Harry’s skin, and he felt Severus tremble slightly, a small sound that resembled a whimper escaping him.

“Severus?” Harry whispered, his hand coming to rest gently on the man’s back.

Severus’s body trembled against Harry, as though the weight of everything—pain, exhaustion, fear—was finally too much to bear. He inhaled shakily, his chest pressing against Harry’s as if seeking the only source of warmth in the world. His breath caught, and then, with a broken exhale, his voice cracked, barely audible. 

“I’m sorry…” The words were forced, strained, as if he could hardly bring them to the surface.

Harry’s chest tightened painfully at the apology, at the way Severus had to fight for every word. He could feel his own heart aching for him, for the things left unsaid.

HP Rec Fest 2024 - Day 26: A fic under 5k

A year ago we lost a much beloved member of our fandom community. My co-mod for this tumblr and the HOS Discord group, and founder of @hprecfest, the unforgettable Scarlet, aka givereadersahug (tumblr) / emeraldlove (AO3).

Today's theme for HP Rec Fest 2024 is for fics under 5k, and I thought it was a perfect way to celebrate her memory.

Scarlet loved writing short-form works, and there wasn't anything she couldn't write a drabble/microfic about. She left us with hundreds to enjoy, across many ships and many fandoms. It was a very difficult choice picking just a few of them from huge selection. Accidentally, they've all ended up being her G-rated fics, but she also wrote an impressive and delicious number of works from all ratings.

Severus sniffled softly, and Harry’s voice dipped lower, firm but reassuring.

“Just don’t forget, Severus—I’m here. I’m not going anywhere. Okay?”

Severus finally nodded, but his breath hitched, the faint tremor betraying him. His eyes, dark and guarded, held a vulnerability so raw it made Harry’s chest ache. He could feel his fear, his need in the way Severus clung to his hand, reluctant to let go—a touch that clung as though letting go might shatter him.

Then Severus’s lower lip quivered, and he bowed his head, his curtain of black hair falling like a shield. It broke something in Harry. His heart twisted with a fierce, aching need to protect, to soothe, to be whatever Severus needed at this moment.

With a gentle tug, he pulled Severus into an embrace, his arms wrapping securely around the man as though they could protect him from everything.

With a shuddering exhale, Severus wrapped his arms around him, clutching him tightly. His fingers curled into the fabric of Harry’s shirt, holding on as though he might be taken from him.

Harry closed his eyes, inhaling the earthy scent of cedarwood. Severus’s breath was warm against his shoulder, uneven, and he let out a soft whimper as he buried his face deeper into him, clinging to him.

“Shhh I got you… it’s alright…” Harry murmured, his voice low and soothing.
