Congratulations to all the participants of this year's Snarry-a-Thon! It's been another incredible month to be a Snarry fan. This is one of the oldest HP fests going, and definitely the oldest Snarry fest. It's always a jubilant time to celebrate our favourites.

A huge thank you to Snape_Potter for hosting and running the fest once more. Sixteen years strong 🎉🥳❤️The 2024 fest collection can be found here on AO3.

New Snarry fics and art (totaling over 353k words!) were created for this year's fest - that's roughly the equivalent of Prisoner of Azkaban and Order of the Phoenix combined!

It’s impossible for me to remember the first fic I read, as twenty years ago they were mostly one-shots that came to me in an email on a Yahoo account I no longer have. So instead I will share the first fic that I was obsessed with. Thankfully, it is now archived on AO3 so that it’s easier for new fans to find it. Being a part of Shoebox Project fandom communities on LiveJournal was so much fun, and this fic will always hold a special place in my heart.

HP rec fest: day 8

@hprecfest Day 8: rec a fic that was recced to you

I couldn't think of anything that fit my pre-2020 theme, so I went though my bookmarks and old LJ to see where I used to get my recs from. I mostly have records of my Drarry days. My Wolfstar past is very hazy and doesn't cover where I found my recs.

When I had my brief Drarry phase in 2011/2012 I made my way through this reclist and this one by shadowfireflame.

And then even earlier, 2005 and onwards, I trusted Lazulus' Drarry taste. I would always find something good to read among silentauror's recs or on Hecate & Sandrine's recsite.

These reclists are a double-edge sword, though. I love seeing all the old, familiar names and look at them with that sepia tinge of fond nostalgia, but then I click on the links and find deleted, deleted, deleted. Some stories are just a quick AO3 search away or the Wayback machine has them, but some are gone for good and only live on in hazy memories.

This is also true for reclists. They lived on Livejournal or private websites that have long since been deleted, but the above should give you a small glimpse into (my) past Drarry fandom.

Original fic posted 2008. An amazingly snarky, funny fic that isn't DH-canon-compliant but is sooo enjoyable. Post-war, it's Remus' wedding to Bridezilla Tonks, and guess who he asks to be best man? I was grinning the whole time, and the Snape POV is golden! I listened to the podfic and malnpudl does an amazing job voicing Snape. Since it's post-war, Harry and Hermione are also briefly in the story and I love that. Excerpt:

That the fair Nymphadora immediately disappeared into a realm of tulle, orange blossom, and bridal magazines the size of the London telephone directory was a far greater surprise. Even her nearest and dearest seemed shocked when she announced that she had always wanted to look like the late Princess of Wales on her wedding day, twenty-five foot train, tiara, middle-aged groom, and all. None of the above was as a great a shock as Lupin's choice of best man: me. Once upon a long time ago I remember keeping most of my stuff to myself, cluttering up my hard drive but never getting posted anywhere, because I was convinced there just couldn't be that many people besides me who'd want to read it. Holy mackerel was I wrong! Honestly I'm still working through the backlog, there's a lot of stuff just hiding out in random folders on old laptops of mine, lol.

Shockingly I'll actually read much more than just Sirius/Regulus, it's just that The Boys(tm) are the only pairing that holds my attention enough for me to sit down and write most of the time.

I've pulled up some of the "old school" Sirius/Regulus shenanigans I couldn't tear my eyes from as a kid. And I tried to pull ones that I haven't mentioned on here as much, so hopefully they're "new" recs. I added the links if I could find them...though it appears that LiveJournal is now requiring a login to view a lot of these nowadays...and in revisiting some of them I realized that my own LJ has finally been purged by the website lol. Fifteen years of breaking their TOS by posting incestuous underage smutfics and it was the crime of not logging in for two years that finally did me in, I'm laughing so hard!

And then there's this masterpiece that I saved to my computer probably 12+ years ago...but I didn't write down who wrote it! Or even the title (teenage me wasn't the most forward-thinking). And it seems to have completely disappeared from the internet. It was a LiveJournal user, that's all I remember. But I positively love this fic! So much that I basically copied it when I wrote Ticigi's fic for HP Cest Fest 2022.

And of course "A Thousand Year's Good Wine", which is my personal white whale that I will likely go to my grave never reading again, lol. Every year I feel like I get closer and closer to forgetting just what about it was so special...

If we yank my brain out of 2010 and fast forward to today, I feel like there's a lot more delicious Sirius/Regulus to be had. Once upon a time, there was literally not a single Sirius/Regulus fic I hadn't read. If it was on Ao3, FF.net, LJ, IJ, or someone's personal blog, I'd seen it. Every Google results page for "Sirius/Regulus" had been carefully combed through. But today? I'm sure I'm missing a lot that's around. I'm not even caught up fully on Ao3 at the moment, and that's saying something! There's so much more to choose from now, although there has also been a noticeable shift in tone, and something of a trade-off, I feel.

A lot (by which I mean almost all) of older Sirius/Regulus was canon-compliant, and it was rare to find anything that didn't end with Reggie dead. (A notable exception would be earthphoenix and esc_azkaban's Sirius/Regulus/Severus fics,) So for those who like me want to indulge in pretending he made it out okay--or at least partake in some canon-divergence--this is the decade to be living in, lol.

However, RegulusLives! aside, we don't see nearly as much of the pretentious, purple-soaked goodness that saturated LJ and InsaneJournal back in the day. If only the past and present could meet somewhere in the middle! (ﾉ｀Д´)ﾉ

This might be confusing to some people but I'm also always down for some platonic Sirius|Regulus and the fastest way to obsess me is to write a fic where Sirius somehow ends up with custody of his brother. I think Riakida did a fic like that a year or two back that I fell in love with pretty quickly.

And we have so many longfics now! Sirius/Regulus never used to be the kind of pairing that got more than a one-shot (blame Reggie's death lol). So part of me is still getting used to finding my OTP in fics that I can actually follow and look forward to updates and such... "we could swim inside these crowds" by waitforthespark is one I've been following for awhile now. (Updates probably seem slow to everyone but me, the reigning champion of going literal years between chapters on my own fics.)

I'm curious, what drew you to the madness my stuff and similar works? Do you write as well, or just read? Any amazing gems you've come across in your wanderings?

I wonder if you know... where is a good place for FF prompts/challenges? I'm in the mood to write again but it's been... curious. I lean towards writing angst when I'm otherwise stuck, but I think a prompt might help turn that around. (Sleepy af, will forget I've asked, and haven't written fiction properly for a few years)

Yet another wonderful piece by eldritcher, this one written for consistentsquash, this is a gorgeous, painful story of beautiful, ruined people.

I love the way the story subverts canon (and Albus's plans), and every line oozes with delicious obervations, particularly when Snape contemplates his Dark Lord.

The author uses second-person POV here, and it works because this Severus is such an unsparing observer of everyone, but especially of himself.

An appropriately chilling little tale of revenge featuring everyone's favorite pink horror, Dolores Umbridge.

Why You Should Check It Out:

This fic, written for the 2012 Deeply Horrible fest on LiveJournal, is a painful and masterful exploration of the lengths Severus has to go to to survive both physically and psychologically (as long as he must). It's the literary equivalent of one of those extreme close-ups that makes one unconsciously draw back in one's seat in the movie theater. The reader gets to go along for the ride as Snape methodically de-humanizes himself for the sake of the Greater Good.

Rec because - My recs for today are two comfort fics I have been rereading a lot. It's probably easier to call them queer instead of trans because they are pretty hard to categorize. They both have a lot of intersex vibes which is really, really super rare to find in fic. They are my holy grail Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides fics of the HP fandom.

Rec because - this is my all time fav queer as fuck comfort fic. The fic I want to take with me to hell/afterlife/next incarnation/whatever :D Beautiful, sensitive and brilliant. Voldemort seduces Krum for an One Night Stand which of course becomes a full-blown relationship where they don't talk about anything before Krum's gender dysphoria hits. It's got an earned happy ending. It's just incredibly comforting. I can quote whole sections from this fic because I reread it a lot.

Rec because - this is my all time fav Sirius/Snape fic. Absolutely. Zero doubt. But it doesn't have the 100% comfort vibes of the previous fic because it gets really dark sometimes. I know some of my friends found it triggering. I feel what is comforting to one person can be sometimes the total opposite for somebody else. So definitely read the warnings first. Also the sequel has an earned happy ending but I am first going to just link the main fic because I feel it stands on its own and packs an incredible punch.

Wish I could wrap up so many of you and bring you to Seattle this weekend. My sis' town in NoCal is supposed to be 112F (44.4C) degrees and my son's town in SoCal 105F (40.5). Not even getting into my cousins in Las Vegas where it's going to push 117F (47.2C). And yes the south has been suffering for weeks on end. Crazy! I lived in an old brick apt in Chicago a long time ago that didn't have A/C. Its where I learned about soaking in a cool bath and then laying on the bed with a fan on to dry off. Rinse and repeat. Be safe!

What I'm reading:

So last time I mentioned I would be reading Temptation on the Warfront by alizarincrims0n (AO3). I'm on chapter 17! However, I quickly realized, I've read it before. It must have been two years ago, I think. Definitely worth a second read. Draco joins the trio on the Horcrux hunt. It's always fun for me when an author is talented enough to manipulate canon with inserts of another character into the scenes and it works! Alizarincrims0n certainly has that talent!

I also read the posting for today's @drarrydisabilityfest, Like Father, Like Son (5.6K) by @ladderofyears. Summary: During Scorpius's autism diagnosis, Harry begins to understand that he might be autistic too.

My thoughts:

I'm always amazed when so much can be packed into a short fic. I adored this slice of life story with Harry and Draco sitting in Madam Rosemary's office with Scorpius off playing in the corner, while getting told his diagnosis. Little bells start going off as the Healer speaks. Draco is lovely as the parent who dives into all research available, which is mainly Muggle. And his reflection back on his family is a Wow! Harry is sitting there in denial because Scorpius is perfect...which he is. @ladderofyears presents the diagnosis and how it was made with examples so beautifully. Never preachy. And last thing I'll say is I just loved the name of Scorpius' preschool: Green Toadstool Nursery. Definitely a Rec!

So during the AO3 DDOS problem, @lee-bella posted Non AO3 HP Masterlists. Wow! what a treasure load. The fests were hosted on Dreamwidth and/or LiveJournal. What attracted my attention immediately was down at the end were two older Masterlist directories on Livejournal. What was exciting for me was that these were the original postings with comments on these fics. So many have been re-posted on AO3 at a later time, but the originals capture the excitement of the fests. If you dig around, you'll notice that commenting while usually very high, can also contain concrit. I have my share of burns on there. *ouch*. What you can also find is some fics from deleted authors that still exist in the fest community postings. Here's the links. And thank you @lee-bella for this post!!! HP Masterlist from 2002-2017. And my fav! Guns&Handcuffs Drarry Fests and Challenges 2004-2015. Wasn't surprised at all to see @vaysh11 was responsible for this. Dig deep into the fests but also note the other links on the Home Page and the text before the masterlists, which gives other fascinating links.

Other TidBits:

I made an ask on a Discord Server for what the ship name was for Harry/Daphne. I was so uninspired when Haphne came back as the answer. I was hoping for something like DaphPot or HarDaph. GreenPot would have been good but there's Astoria, too. Hmm PotDGreen!!! *snicker*

Oh, Rom is sad, sad, sad. After posting on here last time that I'm in desperate need of a beta for my long arse WIP, I then asked on the two big Discord servers for H/D and for HP Writers. No response. Zero. nadda. Just so you know, I'll continue writing this fic and start begging more. Most of those Scorching comments I mentioned that I received way back then was for lack of a good betaing. I have scars...deep scars. Anyone use Grammarly? it has a 30 day limit for 150K.

Back in the day, I modded "Minerva Fest," a LiveJournal celebration of my favorite HP character. The fest ran for five years and brought some stellar fics and artwork. This excellent story served as the opener for the very first Minerva Fest in 2010, and it's still a pleasure all these years later. Minerva and Amelia make such a believable pairing as we follow them from their teenage years to adulthood and their careers as Hogwarts professor and head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
