“it reminds me of those diaries people have in the movies and stuff. with the little lock, y’know?” he didn’t think that was a real thing people actually did, honestly. at least, not grown people, and he was pretty sure infinite didn’t employ children. with the way some people acted around here, however, he could never be 100% positive.
“it’s probably just a diary though. or someone’s lyric book.” he’d prefer the diary, honestly. it would be nice to hear about drama that didn’t involve him for once. as she reaches towards him, honey produces a bobby pin from behind one ear, removing a stray piece of blond hair from it before handing it over to marlowe. “i trust you’ve done this before.”
if anyone around here was going to have picked a lock before, honey’s money was on dongsoo, but they didn’t have time to go and find him, given it was before a show and dongsoo was probably busy running around doing whatever it was he got up to. ( not to mention honey didn’t exactly want to introduce the two quite yet, given how dongsoo dongsoo could be and how marlowe marlowe could be. ) marlowe was a solid second choice, however, and honey had faith in her.
“right? i didn’t think this was something that a company actually made, but it’s kind of cool. i think i want one, wouldn’t you?” she cocked her head to the side, grinning at him like the chesire cat. it was a definite set up, for marlowe knew that she would not hesitate to read all of siheon’s exploits in his diary, should he ever keep one. was he even the type of person to keep a diary?, marlowe wasn’t sure but tucked that question away, sure she wanted to find out.
if a diary wasn’t an exciting enough prospect, the idea of it being a lyric book was something spectacular. marlowe’s brown eyes widened, as did her grin. “all the more reason to open it then! if the lyrics are good enough, we can use the book as leverage so that the writer could write songs for our groups, that is, if they’re not doing so already.” marlowe decided before taking another long pause to investigate the notebook. the strangest thing about it was that it seemed vaguely familiar, but she couldn’t place where she’d seen it. placing a hand over her heart, she fluttered her eyelashes at him. “why, of course. i’ve done some of my best snooping while on this tour. do you take me for some sort of amateur? and no, asking for the hammer does not count.”
she was quick to take the bobby pin, murmuring a quick thank you before holding it up and blinking a few times, looking at the lock. so marlowe fancied herself a budding spy, but she’d never done something like this with a bobby pin before. the girl took the item and placed it in the lock, wiggling it about. she huffed a few times when the lock wouldn’t budge. no, this is not happening right now, she wouldn’t let it. she was determined to get this thing opened. “do you think if we threw it against the wall, it could open? like, if all else fails and we used that as a last resort?”

another day, another set of performances. if you had asked seojun when he was idol if he thought he would be on the other side, behind the scenes and yet still in the industry he woudl have thought you crazy. it felt like deja vu sometimes, forcing him back into his younger self and making him think he needed to be somewhere. he needed to be getting fitted for a mic, warming up before they performed their choreography and warming up his voice. but that was past, four almost five years had passed since his idol days. sometimes he wondered if he could have had a solo career but again it was too far past that. instead he reminded himself why he was here, because he was a manager and needed to make sure his girls were doing okay before tonight. earlier he had noticed only three bodies on stage, one of braveheart was missing and so he had tasked himself with finding said missing idol. it took him longer than he wanted to admit before he happened upon the main dancer. tilting his head in question, he towered over her, but he did so over many. “ why are you looking for hammer and why do you have that notebook in the first place? aren’t you supposed to be getting warmed up with the others, marlowe ? ” he couldn’t help if there was a little bit of an authoritative older brother tone to his voice, but he didn’t want to get chewed out for not knowing where she was.
who else other than killjoy of killjoys seojun to appear out of thin air and apparently on his usual path to ruin all of marlowe's fun. the girl puffed her cheeks out and gave him an unimpressed look. "if it isn't my fairy godfather." she murmured to herself. the same one who’s always trying to turn me back into a pumpkin, she wished she could say, but chose against it. marlowe did her best to try and slyly move the notebook behind her back. it was no use, for she was already having to listen to his questions regarding its mystical arrival into her life. "because, seojun, a staff member just handed this to me and then walked off. clearly, it was intended for me but i don't know what's inside it." she explained as best as she could, but still, the situation was vague even to her.
"what if it's a letter from a fan? what if they're in trouble and the only way i can help them is by opening this notebook and reading about their turmoil? seojun, do you not have a heart?" the blonde did her best to play up the drama, even going so far as to add a quiver to her voice, rounding her already wide eyes and frowning. the fabricated frown became real at the mention of warming up. "if you must know, i'm all warmed up. the others? they need all the practice they can get. do you think you could ask if we could go on tomorrow? maybe then, they'd be ready."

it’s rare to have a few minutes of downtime, especially before a performance, but honey had earned them. or at least, that’s what he’d told himself whenever he’d tucked himself into some assumedly-forgotten corner of the stadium, casually scrolling tiktok, partially hidden behind some boxes of merch in case someone decided to look for him. glancing up as he hears someone call out, honey steps out from his hiding place so he doesn’t scare the life out of this poor girl, before pulling the lollipop out of his mouth with a loud pop!, using the candy to gesture towards the notebook in her hand, thankfully unfamiliar to him. then again, he’s not dumb enough to carry his private shit around a stadium full of absolute randos. “you want a hammer for that, or are those two thoughts not related?”
“’cause like, you don’t need a hammer for that dinky little lock. just get a bobby pin or something. i’ve got like five of them digging into my scalp right now if you want to borrow one.” after a moment’s more consideration, he adds, “sorry if i just like, insulted your diary security system. but hey, free advice on how it can improve?”
marlowe quirked an eyebrow at the sight of siheon emerging from some random corner, but shook it off after considering the source. perhaps despite her best interests, she enjoyed honey's company. if anything, it was nice to know that someone could be just as free and outspoken as she wanted to be. she wished she could say as she was, but marlowe still bit her tongue far too many times than she'd care to admit ( if you could believe it ). "honey, look at this." she explained, holding up the notebook so that he could hopefully see the dastardly little device keeping it together. "why in the world would anyone put an actual lock on their notebook? what's inside this? their bank account information? the secrets to the universe? what is it?" her mind was racing to the point where she almost didn’t hear his comment about the bobby pin. almost being the operative word. the girl silently held out her hand. “be an angel and hand one over, then. for helping me, i’ll even let you read the first page.” she decided that it was a good enough offer . . . unless it was, in fact, someone’s bank account information and then she’d be getting the short end of the stick without a doubt.

“how much do you want to bet that i can shove this whole cookie in my mouth?” nobody had forced her into this. dayeon simply happened to spot the cookie at on the table and upon realizing that it didn’t belong to anybody, she decided that she could use some fun on this tour. traveling the world was fun, but she knew she could spice up the situation even more if she wanted to.
letting out a rather chaotic laugh, she once again turned to the individual besides her and raised a single brow. “come on. i won’t hold you liable if i end up choking and dying or whatever. there’s like 10 guards around anyway. i’m sure someone will perform the heimlich on me if it really goes wrong.” with a few bat of her eyes, she brought the cookie close to her mouth, stretching it out to see just how big it can get. dayeon was aware that she had a pretty big mouth, and she was confident that she could get it in if she wanted to.
during times like these, marlowe wondered if she were being punished for something she’d done in a past life or when she was a child in this one. picking at a freshly-manicured, braveheart pink nail, the blonde watched as yet another one of her members made a fool of themselves for the umpteenth time this tour. i should start keeping score, she thought. jinnie would undoubtedly win, but dayeon might give her a run for her money. “the bet i’d rather take is whether or not seojun might actually fall on the floor if he were to see you try and shove that thing in your mouth.” marlowe countered, looking dayeon up and down.
the five of them -- her members and their manager -- were nothing it not a chaotic almost-family. granted, she liked them better than her real family, but that wasn’t a hard assessment to make. when she’d been younger and more foolish, marlowe would wonder what it was like to have sisters. now that she was an idol and knew better, she wished she could go back in time and tell her younger self that she’d be better off wondering what it would be like to be a billionaire. “you’re too trusting. come on. you’ve seen those guys. do you really think any of them are smart enough to be able to execute the Heimlich without breaking each and every one of your ribs?” she also wanted to add in the question of, and you’d allow any of them to actually touch you?, but decided against it. “do you really not like our group that much, that you’d rather choke on a cookie as a means of getting out?”

marlowe had been unceremoniously put on lost-and-found patrol, seeing as that some no-name staff had handed her a beat up old journal that was left lying in one of the hallways under singapore national stadium. at first marlowe thought it was a joke, but when the man handed over the item before promptly turning on his heel and purposefully walking away, she knew she'd been had. perhaps worst of all was the fact that the journal had an actual lock on it. her curiosity had only heightened and so, minutes after she'd arrived a the venue, she wasn't working on getting her stretches or warmup in, she was patrolling the hallways looking for a hammer. "does anyone have a hammer?" the disconnect between her sugary sweet voice and the words coming out of her mouth were likely cause for a few people to pause, but she didn't care. she was on a mission. "and . . . uh, has anyone lost a notebook?" the blonde thought that if she could sound as disinterested as possible, no one would claim it and she could unlock all of the juicy secrets inside. they had to be good, right?

jia’s been under infinite entertainment for a few years at this point. she joined shortly after her sister. when she made the switch to backup dancer she needed guidance. her sister was busy with training. and she didn’t know her way around seoul.
despite their different personalities she and marlowe became friends of sorts. she was like a mentor. although she half the time didn’t know what marlowe was actually talking about.
she was currently in bravehearts dressing room. the concert was almost over and the last few groups were performing. “what did you do this morning?” she asked as she looked to marlowe.
marlowe wasn't unaware of the situation she was in; being an idol was hard work and there were days when the work seemed to be far too much to be worth what she got out of it. thankfully, as of late, the days on the tour had been rewarding. she felt like she was coming out of her own; not to say that she was a caterpillar becoming a butterfly, but more of a beautiful butterfly becoming an even more beautiful butterfly (no, before you ask, she still hasn't grown a humble bone in her body).
she was finding herself among her infinite family, but that didn't mean she particularly liked spending all day with just anyone. she had her favorites and one favorite in particular was in her group's dressing room. seeing the familiar face of jia in the mirror had marlowe grinning, despite the pools of sweat that she was dabbing off from the nape of her neck. "this morning?" she asked, trying to remember. "if you want the truth, i think i just laid low. i've been feeling a little tired as of late. i don't know, maybe the tour is catching up with me. how about you? busy giving the other dancers some much-needed lessons?" she didn’t hide the fact that she held jia in high regard. truly, marlowe thought that the other girl was far too good to be held in the background.

jinnie wasn’t sure she’d ever heard marlowe say the words thank you. she tried to keep the shock from registering on her face. for years, it felt like she’d been desperately trying to pull out any warmth from the other, but it only appeared in very rare spurts. this had definitely been the longest time without cameras around where they were… getting along ? it wasn’t forced for the fan service that was ‘jinlowe’; it felt real. “ you’re not a little brat. ” jinnie lied easily, never enjoying people talking ill of themselves. a bit ironic, considering her own constant negative self-talk. “ everyone deserves someone being nice to them. ” she shrugged, a bit shy with her words. the last thing she wanted was to disrupt this tentative peace treaty they were forming. her eyes met the blonde’s, wide and genuine. “ even you, marlowe. ”
she didn’t even take it personally when the younger girl backpedaled on her words. for some reason, jinnie didn’t quite believe her. maybe it was something about this tour but marlowe was definitely reaching out in a way she’d never done before. it made the redhead super hopeful for their future. she would like for them to be actual friends. “ oh, uh… she was worried at first. my umma was too. they thought i was too young. ” truthfully, they had been right but when she was younger, jinnie was so desperate to be like the musicians she loved growing up. “ but they’re really happy and proud now. they came to the seoul show and were very impressed. ” she smiled, a bit nostalgic. she missed her family dearly. “ i actually don’t know how new it is, but apparently it’s in california. i think doing a vlive there is a great idea. by that time, our studio choom performance will be out, wouldn’t it ? ” she was actually super excited for valentines to see. they’d worked hard on it. as they continued walking, jinnie looked over at marlowe. “ you think so ? i think a lot of the people on tour are super trustworthy. ” she could easily name at least ten people with her hands. “ if you were ever in that kind of scenario, i’d make sure you’re taken care of. ”
don't look now, but it seemed as though valentine's wildest dreams were coming true. who knew jinnie was alright, once you looked past some of her shortcomings? marlowe was surprised, but quickly realized that wasn't the fairest assessment in the world. the blonde knew that she came on far too strong and, despite them having met in their trainee days and her being the youngest, marlowe never wanted to be seen as the 'sweet one.' even at such a young age, she knew that the last thing she'd ever be was sweet . . . but fast forward all these years, and she'd been doing her best to give the public what they wanted. however, that hardly translated into her actions once they were offstage or when the cameras stopped rolling. maybe now, she could turn over a new leaf? show her true self to her members ( whatever that was ). hearing jinnie tell her that she wasn't a little brat was enough for marlowe to furrow her brows. all through her life, she'd heard that some people could be genuinely kind, genuinely good. she'd never met such a person -- but it seemed as though jinnie might be the first. after a few moments, marlowe felt her features soften and bowed in gratitude before she could stop herself. "thank you for saying that. i -- i'm kind of shocked you'd say that, considering that, if you ask me, i've only been a little brat around you when we're not in front of someone, whether it be staff or our fans." marlowe explained herself as best she could, and hoped it didn't come out staggered and confused. "i understand what you're saying. i think it’s really amazing that, after everything i’ve said and done, you can still feel that way. you’re so kind.” she continued babbling, before asking perhaps the dumbest question she’d ever asked. “how do you do it?”
as she listened to jinnie's retelling of her journey to idoldom, marlowe was surprised with how closely their stories aligned. her parents, too, were worried about her. they told her she was too young, that it was a silly dream that she'd likely grow out of. that was what caused her to go behind their backs and audition with a few of her friends from her ballet company. what they didn't know wouldn't hurt them and, sure, they'd been mortified that she could forge her mother's signature near perfectly, but they got over it. or, they would, someday. she hoped. whatever. this wasn't about her, this was about jinnie and for once, marlowe was happy to focus on someone else. "awe, that’s sweet! to be honest, i should have known; from where i stood, you went on stage that night with something to prove, almost. you did very well, and i'm happy that they were there to see how well you're doing." marlowe spoke, taking the time to space out her words so she didn't trip over them. she wished her parents would have come, but her elder brothers had. she snorted at the memory, it spilling out of her. "my two brothers came to that show, too, and were seated right next to one of your superfans. they told me that the entire time, this person was rooting for you like they were your little sister. my eldest brother in particular said you had a lot of charisma on stage." it was true; they told her how impressed they were with the team after the show. marlowe wished her parents could have been there, but restaurants couldn't run themselves ( or whatever half-hearted excuse they'd given her; she'd heard enough of them that, at this point, they started to bleed together. ) when the concept of a vlive is brought up, her eyes begin to glow. "i love that idea." marlowe declared. "i think the cafe would appreciate it because, think of it this way, we'd be giving them free publicity!" trying to think of the dates, the blonde paused and went over her mental calendar. sure enough, she began to nod. "you're right, it would. so the company would really have no choice other than to send us out there. i'm sure it'll have already gotten a billion views by then." she believed it, too. what they were working on was no joke and, in her mind, was prone to become the stuff of legend. she'd be ceo of the company soon enough. speaking of the company, hearing jinnie say that she trusted the people they were with was a nice thought, even if marlowe couldn’t reciprocate it. “i’m glad you feel that way. there’s nothing worse than worrying about whether or not someone has your back.” however, when jinnie said that she’d look out for marlowe, the girl reached out and gently took hold of her arm. she never doubted it, surprisingly enough, but still having the confirmation unleashed her softer side. “you really are so kind. thank you. i’d probably have no clue what to do, but i’d do everything i could to get you to someone who could help.” she didn’t voice her thought that jinnie would probably have people clamoring to help her, should she need it. it was a good thing -- she deserved it -- but marlowe wondered what that was like.

Minseok laughed. The literal name said it, the game was about animals. But it was cute that Marlowe was curious about it. As a gamer, he was used to talking about his favorites to whoever was willing to listen, but it usually was Deiji because he knew she enjoyed it. It was easy for him to share with his soulmate knowing he would never be judged and he would even be hyped for it. Yet he had to admit that he didn’t know Marlowe that way, and if what some people said about her was true, he sort of didn’t want her to make fun of him because of what he enjoyed. Minseok knew better than anybody to never judge a book by its cover, or by the way other people talked about them, but he couldn’t help being wary and more careful than he usually was. Too trusting, he had been called plenty of times. "Yes, all of them are animals. Well, there are a few humans. The player’s avatar is a human, and you can visit other players. But they’re not as cute as the animals.” That was a good thought, to compare cute animal crossing characters to the other artists. “You know, I think that would be fun! I might do it someday.” With a frown, he looked at the girl. “You have to give kindness to receive kindness in return,” he reminded her. “My grandmother used to tell me that I should always treat people in the way I would like to be treated no matter who they are.” And he had done that his whole life.
Starting his own company seemed like too much work, Minseok would never be interested in something like that. Being an idol was fun now, but in a few years, he would like to do something else. Reason why he was so careful with his money now, saving and investing. All the news outlets always talked about how he had already bought two buildings being so young, and he knew that was really the best investment he could have ever done. “Not really.” The industry was trash anyway, why would he want to get involved even more than he already was? So he decided to drop that, because then he would say more than he should. Well, he didn’t think it was that bad. Whatever she had said, if it had been bad, it would be all over the news already. Minseok had been around long enough to know when to worry and when to just move on, and right now it was definitely the latter. Oh, he didn’t have a mask. He hadn’t planned to leave the hotel that day, which was odd for him. But he was too tired after practice and all he had wanted was to play some games, but it seemed that Marlowe needed this. “That would be great, if you don’t mind. I’ll just text my manager to let him know we’re leaving.” He could be nice when he wanted to be, and he wasn’t in the mood to get in trouble that day. He led Marlowe back inside towards the lobby, glad that it was such a nice day. “Do you have a favorite ice cream flavor? I wouldn’t mind some chocolate ice cream, to be honest.”
marlowe's elder brothers played video games and were avid fans of them, but the games they played usually involved different sports. perhaps, if they played something as bright and colorful as the game minseok was playing, marlowe would have found herself more drawn to the games than not. as she waited for an explanation as to the logistics of the game, she gave a small smile to the elder boy beside her. the odds of her picking up the game were slim to none, which seemed like a shame because she really liked the aesthetics of it and it seemed like it could be a good stress relief (one that wouldn't have her scared speechless, like the horror films she coveted). "oh," she began. "that sounds really nice. do they allow the player to be an animal if they don't want to be a human?" she asked, thinking it would be an interesting turn of events. she'd probably want to be a human instead of an animal -- they were far too smelly for marlowe's own liking -- and she tried to decipher what minseok's player looked like. "what's your player wearing? are they supposed to be you, or someone else?" she questioned. glad she gave him an idea, marlowe grinned. "if you do, you should tell me who i am -- i hope the animal is pink." she laughed out loud at that, finding it funny in an odd sort of way. "who do you think you'd be, if you don't mind me asking?" after hearing his grandmother's advice, marlowe nodded. it wasn't the first time that she'd been fed that line, but this time, it seemed like it was coming from a real place, not some fantasy fairy tale land. "that's good advice; surely you've made her proud, i assume."
"i see. that's fair, really. i feel like you have to be a certain type of person to want to be involved in the logistics and behind-the-scenes stuff. someone with claws and fangs, really." it was why she knew that was her future; her own fangs had come in before her permanent teeth, or so it felt. "well, hm. that’s not always a fair assessment. we’re pretty lucky with our staff here at infinite, i’d say. at the very least, it could be worse.” she chewed at her lower lip, wondering the type of interactions the others had, the ones who didn’t lead with mistrust. she envied them . . . but this wasn’t the time, nor the place to explain herself. the blonde began to glow, all worries out the window. “i don’t mind at all. it’d be nice to be out and about.” if she was being honest, she was growing a bit claustrophobic. it’d be nice to be reminded of her own humanity, even if it was through something as meaningless as going to get ice cream. only except it wasn’t meaningless -- not to marlowe, at least. she followed after him, humming as she pondered what her favorite flavor was. “probably mint chocolate chip, don’t ask me why, but it’s my go-to. what about you? do you have a favorite?”
