Frank Lawton, W.C. Fields, and Roland Young in David Copperfield (George Cukor, 1935)
Cast: Freddie Bartholomew, Frank Lawton, Edna May Oliver, Jessie Ralph, Basil Rathbone, Herbert Mundin, Una O’Connor, Lionel Barrymore, Elsa Lanchester, W.C. Fields, Roland Young, Lewis Stone, Madge Evans, Hugh Williams, Maureen O’Sullivan. Screenplay: Howard Estabrook, Hugh Walpole, based on a novel by Charles Dickens. Cinematography: Oliver T. Marsh. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons. Film editing: Robert Kern. Music: Herbert Stothart.
As long as there are novels and movies, there will be people trying to turn novels into movies. Which is a task usually doomed to some degree of failure, given that the two art forms have significantly different aims and techniques. Novels are interior: They reveal what people think and feel. Movies are exterior: Thoughts and feelings have to be depicted, not reported. Novels breed reflection; movies breed reaction. Novel-based movies usually succeed only when the genius of the filmmakers exceeds that of the novelist, as in the case, for example, of Alfred Hitchcock's transformation (1960) of Robert Bloch's Psycho, or Francis Ford Coppola's extrapolation (1972) from Mario Puzo's The Godfather. We mostly settle for, at best, a satisfying skim along the surface of the novel, which is what we get in Cukor's version of Dickens's novel. I'm not claiming, of course, that Cukor or the film's producer, David O. Selznick, was a greater genius than Dickens, but together -- and with the help of Hugh Walpole, who adapted the book, and Howard Estabrook, the credited screenwriter -- they produced something of a parallel masterpiece. They did so by sticking to the visuals of the novel, not just Dickens's descriptions but also the illustrations for the original edition by "Phiz," Hablot Knight Brown. The result is that it's hard to read the novel today without seeing and hearing W.C. Fields as Micawber, Edna May Oliver as Betsey Trotwood, or Roland Young as Uriah Heep. The weaknesses of the film are also the weaknesses of the book: women like David's mother (Elizabeth Allan) and Agnes Wickfield (Madge Evans) are pallid and angelic, and David himself becomes less interesting as he grows older, or in terms of the movie, as he ceases to be the engaging Freddie Bartholomew and becomes instead the vapid Frank Lawton. But as compensation we have the full employment of MGM's set design and costume departments, along with a tremendous storm at sea -- the special effects are credited to Slavko Vorkapich.

Cimarron (1931)
An elegant example of super film making and a big money picture. This is a spectacular western away from all others. It holds action, sentiment, sympathy, thrills and comedy – and 100% clean. Radio Pictures has a corker in "Cimarron."

Tumblr media
Cimarron won three Oscars, Best Picture, Writing Adaptation (Howard Estabrook) and Interior Decoration (Max Ree), and received nominations for actors Dix and Dunne, director Ruggles, and cinematographer Edward Cronjager.

RKO Radio Pictures invested more than $1.5 million into their epic production.  Filming began in the summer of 1930 at Jasmin Quinn Ranch outside of Los Angeles, where the land rush scenes were shot. Numerous cameramen, extras, wagons, were used by the studio, which purchased 89 acres in Encino, where construction of Art Director Max Ree’s Oscar winning design of a western town was built to represent the Oklahoma fictional boomtown of Osage.  These sets in Encino were used for other RKO films, as well as other features, such as It’s a Wonderful Life (1946).
Tumblr media
RKO premiered their epic picture at the RKO Palace Theatre in New York on January 26, 1931, and then on February 6 of that year at the Los Angeles Orpheum Theater. The premiere included personal appearances of Richard Dix and Irene Dunne, a stage show and an orchestra.
Tumblr media
While it was a commercial success, initially, due to the Depression, RKO did not recoup their investment in the film, which lost over half a million dollars. However, it earned more money on later re-releases.
The movie continued to remain RKO’s most expensive film until the 1939 adventure Gunga Din.

American Horror Story: Hotel
Tumblr media
Misteriosamente, John parece encontrar Holden no hotel.

Hussars opt to rescind gift of armoured car to Sackville, N.B.
The controversy continues over the idea of adding a second armoured vehicle to Memorial Park in Sackville, N.B.
In a letter addressed to the town of Sackville, the 8th Canadian Hussars decided to withdraw their donation of an armoured vehicle.
“They just said given that there is some controversy about it, they wish to do that,” said Sackville Deputy Mayor Ron Aiken. “How much the controversy played into that, we have no idea.”
That controversy has been in play, ever since a decision was made in February to add a second armoured vehicle to Memorial Park.
News of the rescinded offer has left some disappointed.
“Ifelt like it was a true embarrassment for the town,” said Reece Estabrooks of Sackville. “This town has such a rich history with the town and service industry.”
Alex Thomas has been against the installation -- partly because he thinks it glorifies violence.
He'll be making his arguments to town council.
“Our points hadn’t even been brought forward, so I think they had seen something problematic about this gift,” Thomas said.
Others feel the Cougar was the perfect fit for the park.
“We would like the decision to be reconsidered, and we emphasize that this is a memorial park,” said Alf Walker, the Sackville Legion Branch 26 vice-president.
Ever since the decision was made to withdraw the donation, a petition has surfaced online with the signatures of more than 1,000 people hoping that the armoured vehicle will be reconsidered.
“It is for our veterans,” said another Sackville resident, Howard Carr.“And if our veterans wishes are to have that vehicle here, we should honour that.”
Thomas says he'd like to see the community come together to find an alternative, specifically “a way to commemorate that long relationship between the town and the Hussars.”
The town of Sackville says they've been working with the Hussars to find some common ground.
“They want to get together with us to see what we can do in the future, to put memorials in the park, to make it maybe a little less controversial, and to properly acknowledge what the veterans have done for us,” Aiken said.
It’s a quest to find balance, with a monument that's sparked differing opinions all over town.
With files from CTV Atlantic’s Kate Walker.

My Year of the Book - Day 29: I’m a sentimental, culturally-nostalgic fool at heart, with a deep respect for the men and women who serve our country, and for their loved ones who are left behind to keep life as “normal” as possible despite all odds that it will never be the same again. So it should come as no surprise that William Saroyan’s “The Human Comedy” (1943) left me in a blubbering mess when I first read it. It tells the episodic, coming of age story of a teenage Homer Macaulay, his family, and dozens of others on the WWII Homefront. I owe my four hankie experience to Saroyan’s simple, evocative and optimistic prose, and the setting in a rural Central California town called Ithaca - modeled on the author’s Fresno hometown - that mirrored my mother’s memories of growing up in Sacramento and the surrounding countryside. Saroyan exploded on the literary and theater scene in the 1930s, and at one point had three plays running simultaneously on Broadway (His “The Time of Your Life” won the 1939 Pulitzer for drama). Soon, he was in demand in Hollywood, and in a reversal of the usual “Book into Film” process (Larry McMurtry’s “Lonesome Dove” is one of the few other popular novels to follow this path), The Human Comedy began life as a screenplay. MGM paid him $50k, but Saroyan’s script was overlong, and the studio balked at his demand to direct the picture. So MGM hired Howard Estabrook to tame the screenplay, and the resulting film, which starred a marvelously subdued Mickey Rooney in perhaps his best role (nominated for an Oscar), was a huge success. Not to be outdone, Saroyan reworked his script into a novel (his first), which was published a couple of weeks after the film premiere to great acclaim and bigger sales. Ironically, WS won a 1943 Academy Award for Best Story. If you want to know more about Saroyan’s peripatetic and fascinating life, I found John Leggett’s biography of WS, “A Daring Young Man” (2002) to be informative and balanced. #mylibrary #booksofinstagram #bookworm #booklover #bookstagram #books #bookish #booklover #bookgeek #reading #williamsaroyan #WWII #wartime #academyawards #armenian #fresno #firstedition #mickeyrooney #oldbooks

Mary Brian and Gary Cooper in The Virginian (Victor Fleming, 1929) Cast: Gary Cooper, Walter Huston, Mary Brian, Richard Arlen, Helen Ware, Chester Conklin, Eugene Pallette, Victor Potel, E.H. Calvert. Screenplay: Howard Estabrook, Grover Jones, Keene Thompson, Edward E. Paramore Jr., based on a novel by Owen Wister and the play adapted from it by Wister and Keene Thompson. Cinematography: J. Roy Hunt, Edward Cronjager. Film editing: William Shea. Music: Karl Hajos.
This early talkie is most famous for the response of the Virginian (Gary Cooper) to an insult from Trampas (Walter Huston): "If you wanna call me that, smile," and for the crisis that comes when the Virginian (the only name by which he is known, at least in the film) is forced to hang his best friend, Steve (Richard Arlen), who falls in with Trampas's gang of cattle rustlers. But much of it is taken up with the on-again, off-again romance of the Virginian and the new shoolmarm, Molly (Mary Brian). Owen Wister's 1901 novel and subsequent stage play were so popular that it had been filmed twice as a silent, and this version established Cooper as a major star and a Western icon. It also spawned a 1960s TV series.
