hi! i hope you're doing well. is there a ref sheet you have anywhere showing how the rothsraine uniform works? specifically which section of the capelet the jacket sleeves & cloak connect to. it would help with fanart, and no promises but if cosplay is ever on the table it'd be a fun challenge.
Hey! So I don't currently have a finished up-to-date ref sheet/model sheet, the ones I do have don't show what you're wanting to see and are a bit old! So, since I've been meaning to replace them, I decided to let your ask push me to start on that lol.

I can go ahead and give you these sketches for the time being that show the basic outfit component breakdown for Maia's. The sectioned duster and winged cloak are attached to a shrug-style jacket base. Beneath that, a standard button up and bottoms combo that wouldn't seem too out of place in any academy. The button ups have the school's emblem (or student's attunement) embroidered on its sleeve in the same color as the shirt, creating a subtle visible effect when catching the light. A completed version with more detailed reference will come a bit later to include details for the trim, the enchantment sigils, back views and other details. The Rothsraine uniform has several accepted alternate options accessible via its enchantments, as well, but for here's Maia's!

The main things I have learned from sewing the past few days:
The ladder stitch is magical. I will never NOT be obsessed with how it works.
Practice does in fact help. Shockingly.
You will learn how to use a thimble correctly and it will save your life
Pinning fabric down is actually like really fun if you're doing hand sewing (hated pinning for machine sewing)
Hand sewing WILL take 7000 years. May as well get through a movie or two or five while you're doing it
Sincerely placing 2 marker dashes on your thumbnail is a very good and easy way to keep your stitches even but eventually it will get into your muscle memory and you'll get the hang of it
Your stitches will be ugly at first but it is not the end of the world. The humble seam ripper or the even humbler pin or needle pulling your thread back through will save you
Knotting the thread is kind of evil at the end BUT if you slowly move the loop for the knot by your fabric it will knot very close to it so less issues there
Threading a needle also gets easier with practice (used to take me like 10 minutes in the past and now I can do it VERY quickly. Scary)
The sewing bug may bite you. You may start from a perspective of "well I just need to repair a hole in my pants so they're wearable" and a day later you will be fixing any item of clothing in your wardrobe <- true experience sadly 😰
It is very good if you love repetitive motions. Like SO so good if you do.
Darning is kind of scary if you are keeping the sock on your foot to do so (many many socks I had to repair sadly)
Genuinely if you feel you cannot manage the sewing machine bc of how out of control and fast it goes (PERHAPS just a me personally issue but still) hand sewing will feel so much less bad because you're in control of every stitch and if you fuck up it's much easier to undo than having to seam rip an entire row
Get scared constantly. This will not help however I think you do kind of have to do it scared sometimes. Or often.
Check your work OFTEN. Sometimes a stitch might be in the wrong place and checking both sides of the fabric will save you many mistakes down the road. Somehow stitched 3 perfectly straight stitches without realizing it and only bc of this, was able to catch it and make sure it was ok
Best part of doing repairs is you don't have to iron #lazy
And most of all it can be really really awesome to be able to use your old and worn clothes again after repair. Like wow my favorite shirt is functional again this RULES

with the year coming to a close, its time to start thinking about some 2025 sewing goals!
starting off with... a soft shopping ban '''':) my stash is full to bursting and i have so many exciting projects i could make in there, theres simply no need for new things.
(im calling it a soft ban because im certain im missing things from all of my projects (notions especially, i usually only pick those as i finalise the design) and im not going restrain myself to my stash if a better choice is available, but it needs to be a purchase for a specific project only.)
ok on to the more fun things! im splitting my year into two (slightly uneven) sections- up until the end of may, im going to be throwing myself into costume work, and then from there i want to focus wholly on fashion & restyling pieces, as i have many, many things ive pushed aside for showy pieces in the past couple years.
for cosplays, heres the breakdown!
Lady Stede Bonnet is my main goal of the year, she will be what im putting the most time into. a (mostly) historical robe à la française inspired by Stede's iconic blue suit. i dont have any base layers to work from, so theres going to be so much to do before we get into the main dress! Heres a list:
Shift
Stays
Pocket Hoops
Under Petticoat
Petticoat
Main Robe
Stomacher
STRETCH- Fichu
STRETCH- Tie On Pocket (collab?)
Wig Styling!
STRETCH- Fan
STRETCH- Knife
its a lot to look at, but hopefully at least some of these will be pretty quick makes! ive listed a few stretch goals, mostly accessories, but id like to get to them if time allows!
if i finish Lady Stede in time (or, more likely, if i get stupidly frustrated at any point and need to put her down for a little) im going to pick up Janet again! i made the skirt back september, and cut out the waistcoat too! i have the fabric for the blouse & was planning on modifying my anne blouse pattern for it, so it should be perfect for when i need something easy for a minute.
as an ultra stretch goal, i also want to make Froggie Senshi! ill talk more about it in its own post, but i think its going to be a great comfy casual cosplay for the end of a long weekend. ill only be working on this one if i have time & energy though! (id actually really like to get a group together for this one but... logistics yknow?)
either way, post may mcm, im taking a break from making costumes! im not sure exactly what fashion pieces i want to make yet, i think ill see how im feeling when the time comes, but im excited for it! ive been feeling a bit constrained by my wardrobe recently, so im hoping adding some fresh pieces will revitalise it :)
i hope youre as excited to follow along as i am to make them!
