So many years ago back when indoor/outdoor cats were the norm I had a beloved cat named Oliver who spent 5 nights a week snuggling with me and his days and bi-weekly midnight excursions beating the shit out of every other neighborhood cat, a few dogs, and one time a whole squirrel which he dragged inside and released. He once released a live snake in my bed as a gift. He was a psychopathic murderer but he loved people, gosh he loved people.
Because of the fact he was constantly ready to fight a bitch he was always coming home bruised and battered but victorious. After the 3rd or 4th $100 visit for the vet to drain an abscess the vet taught us how to drain and clean an abscess. As my mother was a nurse we got quite comfortable with the procedure.
So an important nighttime ritual was to give my cat a good thorough sniffing about the ears and neck for any suspiciously sweet smells (easiest telltale of an abscess) so that we could drain and clean it ASAP before we needed antibiotics. (Yes we should've tried to keep him in away from fights but it was a different time and my dad refused to have an indoor litterbox)
Now I have not had to find, drain, or clean an abscess on any pets for over a decade as my cats today are spoiled indoor darlings who wouldn't survive on the streets for a night much less 17 years.
However every night I still give each cat a few sniffs. Gang I was halfway to the bathroom for peroxide and a scalpel before I remembered I spent the day making chikki/ Indian mixed nut brittle and IM the one indelibly impregnated with the scent of sugar and sweat, not my cat.
Behold an innocent who would like me to stop sniffing her ears. And some really good chikki. I had no idea I was subconsciously checking for abscesses till I was hunting for the peroxide and trying to remember how long to disinfect a scalpel for 😂😂😂

(Fae appears again, a sparkle of interest in her eyes) Can you guys tell me about your powers? The chaos energy sort of stuff? I wanna know if it's any different to my Guardians!
Spectre
-squints suspiciously at Fae- hmm..
Thunderhawk
Grandfather don’t be like that! The gal’s just curious, besides she already works with some alternate version of Angel Island’s Guardians so none of this is too uncommon for her.
Spectre
-with some contemplation he softens his gaze, nodding approvingly at Thunderhawk-
Locke
Oh please allow me to elaborate, since I’ve quite researched this matter a bit I might have some insight to share.
Our chaos manipulating powers mostly come from being attuned to the Master Emerald but it’s not quite as simple as that. Due to the nature of chaotic energy it can be a rather unstable energy to deal with, some individuals are more sensitive to these energies than others, and there’s really no telling how it could affect each individual on a biological sense or even ability wise. This is why even though we all have chaos abilities we are able to manipulate it in different ways and even have our on ways of channeling that energy.
Grandfather Spectre for example, in his young adulthood he experienced an incident in which his body absorbed really high levels of chaos energy directly from the Master Emerald.
As a result of this near death experience he noticed that his skin had darkened and had began producing clouds of his essence as well as becoming a lot more sensitive to chaos energy. This leads him to have near omniscience and a greater command of chaos force which allows him to do incredible things such as teleportation with the use of the chaos force. I’ll also add that our family lineage are a bit of an anomaly when it comes to us drawing energy from the Master Emerald in comparison to the rest of the populace. Since our family has years of research and exposure to these energies it’s a factor that is ingrained in our DNA, allowing us to have a greater discipline and sensitivity in channeling these energies more naturally than most.
-clears his throat a bit- I um hope that my ramblings answered your question some.
An unfortunate outcome of dealing with Chaos energies is that they can be quite unstable as chaos in an of itself is unpredictable, so while our lineage has done its part in making it a science there’s still variables that may be unknown to us or beyond our scope of comprehension.
Iris
All I know about chaos energy is that if you ingest too much you turn into a chaotic demigod… 👀
Locke
That’s… no.. that’s not how it works…
Chikki
Chaotic demigod?! Sign me the fuck up! 👀
Locke
-sighs- Please don’t..

Celebrating Makar Sankranti in India
Every year Makar Sankranti falls on the 14th or 15th of January, and there’s a good reason for that too. The term “Sankranti” refers to the movement of the Sun from one Zodiac to another, so there are a grand total of 12 Sankrantis. What makes Makar Sankranti special? During Makar Sankranti, the Sun moves from Sagittarius or Dhanu Rashi to Capricorn or Makar Rashi, in numerous ways this signifies a new beginning. The Sun which moves into the Northern Hemisphere leads to longer days and the end of the Indian Winter. It falls during the harvest season, with freshly cut crops offered to gods and subsequently eaten. The period signifies “fertility” and bursting into action after the slow and delirious winter season. It ushers in the “auspicious” part of the year which lasts until Karkata Sankranti which falls somewhere in July. It is also the only festival celebrated going by the solar calendar. The contrast between the cozy western holiday season and the vibrant onset of Hindu fertility is an abrupt transition but goes perfectly with the hopeful nature of the new year.
All over India, Makar Sankranti is celebrated in different ways with each one doing their own thing. 14th/15th January signifies not one or two but many festivals.
In Tamil Nadu, the festival is known as Pongal, which translates to “to boil, overflow” and freshly cut rice is cooked with milk and jaggery. The Tamil version can be traced back to the Chola empire, so roughly around the 9th to 13th century. Spread over three days (and a lesser-known fourth day), each day has its own significance. The first day is known as Bhogi Pongal or Indran and focuses on cleaning the house, as each member dusts and scrubs until every surface is squeaky clean. The second day is called Thai Pongal or Surya Pongal and is the most important day, the Pongal is made and first offered to the gods, then the cattle, and only after that are the family members allowed to have it. The third day is spent grooming and worshipping the cattle.
Uttayaran in Gujarat can only be defined by one word, “vibrant”. Strewn across skies are kites that made for a tapestry. There is an industry revolving around this particular time of the year, as kite sales skyrocket (pun intended) and officials from different countries come to participate in kite competitions. The reason behind flying kites is that being out in the Sun after the winter helps kill germs and be more exposed to Vitamin D. Dishes like Undhiyo that are nearing the end of their season are relished for the last time.
If we go farther North, we come across Lohri, the Punjabi variant of Makar Sankranti. The folklore attached to Lohri is of a man known as Dulla Bhat, who lived during the reign of Emperor Akbar. He used to steal from the rich and distribute it among the poor. In his honor, people sing “Sundar Mundriye” during Lohri. This story is different than the religious and godly myths surrounding the other festivals, and it’s fascinating how a festival honors a man who worked for the needy. Punjab is a largely agrarian state, so the festivities are rooted in harvesting crops. People get together around huge bonfires and eat everything from Chikki to Saro ka Saag.
There are tons of other festivals on this day, in Assam it's called Magh Bihu with games like tekeli-bhonga (pot-breaking) and buffalo fighting taking place. In Bihar, locals have chuda-dahi (beaten rice and yogurt) and a portion of gur (jaggery), and in Bengal, it’s called Poush Sankranti and have sweets like pithe, patishapta, etc. with rice and palm jaggery.

So! I've already posted the updated art of these guys to replace the original set, but I've now got them with dex entries to provide a little lore! May or may not do individual, more detailed posts for each of these guys later!
Dex entries below the cut!
Boanz
These diminutive creatures constantly hunger, eating anything they can, from other creatures to garbage to dirt, to fill a mysterious emptiness inside themselves. Tamers are advised to have plenty of snacks available or use appetite suppressants to avoid bites being taken out of them.
Tads
Large polywogs that enjoy damp environments and water. In spite of their underdeveloped legs, they can hop quite a distance.
Grubby
Large, green grubs that are a staple of many predators’ diets. To try to defend themselves, they curl into balls and roll as fast as they can to escape.
Maji
It is unknown what the true form of Maji is beneath it’s cloak and hat. They enjoy stargazing on mountaintops, dreaming of crafting powerful spells.
Rox
Living geodes that seem to wander aimlessly. Judging by how often they bump into things, they appear to be either blind or careless, the latter of which they can afford to be due to how very few things will eat rocks. They have an attraction towards vibrations.
Pippin
Friendly little angels that enjoy helping others. They appear to feed on the gratitude of those whom they aid.
Dervin
Mischievous little devils that enjoy playing tricks on humans, such as moving things while nobody is looking or suddenly shrieking to startle people.
Bulbo
Creatures that resemble sentient plant bulbs. They spend the daytime with their root-like feet buried in the ground as they bask in the sun. At night, they wander in search of water.
Furbin
These highly-adaptable, energetic balls of fur tend to make great pets for children. When food is scarce, they become less active to save energy.
Chikki
Birds that are commonly seen in forested areas, they primarily hunt Grubbies and forage for berries and nuts. The brightness and vibrancy of their crests seems to be an indicator of their overall health.
Dragling
Vicious red lizards that prefer warm or dry climates. They are highly protective of what they deem to be theirs, and spit flames to fight rivals.
Porklin
Small in stature and timid in nature, Porklins wield a surprising amount of strength to protect themselves from predators. They seem to have an intense fear of Boanz.
Skwire
Skwires train with each other endlessly to become great warriors, wielding wooden swords and shields to fight.
Gidget
In the past it was thought that Gidgets and Royaplushes were abandoned toys that came to life. Gidgets are highly social and seem to have a fear of being alone.
Goober
Friendly blobs that seem to enjoy the company of others, and seem unaware of the possible dangers around them. Their eyes float freely in their translucent bodies, but it’s unknown if they actually register anything due to a visible lack of brain.
Spikorn
Strange, rodent-like lizards, they gnaw on metals that they somehow incorporate into the spikes on their shells. The ones with bigger spikes are often viewed as higher in rank.
Gupple
Simple-minded fish that protect themselves by spitting jets of water. They seem capable of traveling on land for short distances, and are surprisingly good at jumping.
Sparkin
These living power cores seem to hibernate when summer hits in an attempt to prevent overheating and exploding.
Mushtool
Mushroom-like creatures that dwell in caves. Their springy bodies give them a strong resistance to impacts. Their short limbs are amazingly effective at digging.
Royaplush
Along with Gidgets, these were thought to be discarded toys that came to life to enact a grudge for being abandoned. While the truth of their nature is still unknown, Royaplush are favored by children for their soft, warm bodies. Though many find their large, glassy eyes to be unnerving.

Taste Test: Comparing Store-Bought vs. Homemade Coconut Jaggery Chikki
In the world of delectable treats, few snacks match the crunchy sweetness of chikkis. These traditional Indian sweets, often made with jaggery and various nuts, have been a favorite for generations. Among the many variants, coconut jaggery chikki stands out for its unique flavor profile and delightful texture.
But is homemade always better than store-bought? In this taste test, we'll compare store-bought coconut jaggery chikkis with their homemade counterparts to determine which reigns supreme.
Understanding Coconut Jaggery Chikki: Coconut jaggery chikki, also known as coconut jaggery brittle, is a sweet treat originating from India. It's made by caramelizing jaggery (a traditional unrefined sugar) with coconut and sometimes incorporating other nuts or seeds. The result is a crunchy, sweet, and slightly chewy snack that's popular across the country.
Homemade Coconut Jaggery Chikki: Making coconut jaggery chikki at home is a labor of love. It starts with selecting high-quality ingredients—fresh coconut, pure jaggery, and any additional nuts or seeds. The process involves carefully melting the jaggery until it reaches the right consistency, then mixing in the coconut and other ingredients before quickly spreading the mixture out to cool and harden. The homemade version allows for customization, ensuring that each batch is tailored to personal preferences.
Store-Bought Coconut Jaggery Chikki: On the other hand, store-bought coconut jaggery chikkis offer convenience. They're readily available in many Indian grocery stores and online platforms. While they provide a quick fix for cravings, they may lack the freshness and customization options of homemade chikkis. However, they're often produced on a larger scale, which can sometimes lead to consistency in taste and texture.
Taste Test Criteria: To conduct a fair comparison, we'll evaluate both store-bought and homemade coconut jaggery chikkis based on several criteria:
Flavor: The primary criterion is the overall taste. We'll assess the balance of sweetness, the richness of coconut flavor, and any additional notes from nuts or seeds.
Texture: Chikkis should offer a satisfying crunch while still being easy to bite into. We'll consider the texture's crispiness, chewiness, and how well it holds together.
Freshness: Homemade chikkis often boast freshness due to the use of high-quality ingredients and immediate consumption. We'll compare this freshness factor against the store-bought options.
Ingredients: Quality ingredients contribute to better-tasting chikkis. We'll scrutinize the ingredient list of both homemade and store-bought versions to determine which uses superior components.
Overall Enjoyment: Finally, we'll gauge the overall enjoyment derived from each chikki, considering factors such as aroma, appearance, and personal preference.
The Taste Test: With our criteria established, let's dive into the taste test:
Flavor:
Homemade: The homemade coconut jaggery chikki bursts with flavor. The sweetness of the jaggery is well-balanced with the natural nuttiness of coconut, creating a harmonious blend that's irresistible.
Store-Bought: The store-bought version offers a similar flavor profile, but it tends to be slightly sweeter, with a more pronounced sugary taste compared to the nuanced sweetness of the homemade variety.
Texture:
Homemade: The homemade chikki exhibits a perfect balance of crunch and chewiness. Each bite offers a satisfying snap followed by a delightful chew, showcasing the skillful preparation.
Store-Bought: While the store-bought chikkis are crunchy, they lack the same level of chewiness found in homemade ones. They tend to be harder and more brittle, which can sometimes make them challenging to eat without making a mess.
Freshness:
Homemade: Freshness is where homemade chikkis shine. Made with freshly grated coconut and jaggery, they retain their vibrant flavors and textures, providing a delightful eating experience.
Store-Bought: Despite efforts to package store-bought chikkis securely, they often lack the freshness of homemade ones. The prolonged shelf life can sometimes result in a stale or slightly off-flavor.
Ingredients:
Homemade: Homemade chikkis boast the use of premium ingredients, often sourced locally or from trusted suppliers. This ensures the highest quality and allows for customization, such as adding extra nuts or seeds for variety.
Store-Bought: While store-bought chikkis may contain quality ingredients, there's less transparency regarding their sourcing and processing. Additionally, preservatives and additives may be present to extend shelf life, which can impact taste and overall healthiness.
Overall Enjoyment:
Homemade: There's something special about indulging in a homemade coconut jaggery chikki. Beyond the taste and texture, there's a sense of satisfaction in knowing that it was crafted with care and attention to detail.
Store-Bought: While convenient, store-bought chikkis often fall short in terms of overall enjoyment. While they satisfy cravings, they lack the personalized touch and freshness of homemade ones.
Conclusion:
In the realm of coconut jaggery chikkis, the verdict is in, and the homemade version takes the crown. However, for those seeking the convenience of store-bought snacks without compromising too much on taste and quality, there's hope.
While our taste test overwhelmingly favored homemade chikkis for their freshness, flavor, and texture, we understand the demands of modern life. With Aazol, you can enjoy the rich, authentic taste of coconut jaggery chikkis without spending hours in the kitchen.
