the steven universe hate is insane bc people are (or at least were) more upset that fictional war criminals got fictional hugs than they recognize that it singlehandedly advanced queer rep in children's media by lightyears and then straight up ate heavy retaliation for the nerve.

It does have real flaws that are worth discussing, but it also put their male protagonist in dresses and skirts and played it straight and even empowering, they aired a lesbian wedding on television, it was a genuinely queer, genuinely diverse piece of media through and through. It did a lot of real good for the real world.

But also the fictional characters caused fictional harm to other fictional characters, and didn't get an onscreen firing squad sentence. So, you know, it's basically ontologically evil in real life.

#i'll never shut up about how the last season ate a 20 episode cut because it was either that or cut the wedding #and the crewniverse stuck to their guns #of course it was rushed. They were literally punished for being queer #This is why we keep saying “you couldn't even handle steven universe” because not only was it actually good #but it did REAL WORLD good and FOUGHT for real world human rights #but because the fiction wasn't hayes code enough y'all lit the crewniverse on fire for it.#Abysmal priorities. That one feeling, the feeling of being way different from your friends, when they talk about their boyfriend and girlfriend, and you're like: "why tf you need relationship in this age. You need to study. You need to explore yourself. You'll probably part after school anyway. Why do you need this thing, full of tears, scandals and overthinking"

And then you realize that you won't feel the need to be all lovey-dovey with someone forever, not in romantic way, because you're depressed/autistic in certain way/aroace/just sick. Not sure which one.

It can't be overstated how powerful the catharsis is when a scene of a character connecting with their wounded inner child is done right. The key poses...the expressions...the timing...storytelling like this can help to provide some healing for so many people in the audience.

#(hear it from me as a former therapist --)#I basically have had many sessions with clients where it's WAY easier to visually show them what inner child work is like #rather than verbally trying to break down the concept and explain it to them in mere words #if you show them visually it hits the subconscious right away. bypasses the conscious mind and cold logic #to show this in the form of art drives the concept home that much more #that's why we need stories about healing done right #the How to Connect Lovingly part is soooo hard to do honestly (speaking from my own personal experiences too)#it's so easy to keep loathing your wounded inner kid and finding him/her/them pathetic #arcane spoilers #arcane s2 #jinx arcane #isha arcane #arcane #literally like...now that I have seen this scene I want to dig up the old photo of smol me that I used in my own therapy --#to connect with my own horribly traumatized inner kid
