Hello! What is your favorite scene you’ve written so far?

Most of these questions have been limited to specific chapters, so I'm going to go by that.

Achilles huffs, his composure cracking. “I don’t know how to make this better. Do you want to go back to Troy? Do you want to go to Phthia or Skyros? You would be safe with my father or my son.”

“You’re sending me away?”

The words come out small, embarrassingly small. All the fire in him extinguished instantly with that thought. Patroclus can’t breathe. Achilles is saying something, but there is a rushing in his ears. He can’t do this to him again. He cannot do this to him again. It's just like before. He’s leaving for his raid in two days. He’ll leave, and once he’s gone Patroclus will be shuffled off again to some far corner of the world, and he’d rather die.

“Patroclus.”

He shoves Achilles away from him hard. Achilles barely takes two steps back, immovable giant that he is, and Patroclus lunges forward and shoves him again. He’s picking a fight he cannot win, and knowing that only spurs him on. Let Achilles kill him. Let him kill him this time rather than sending him away like a coward.

He lunges at him again, and this time Achilles catches his arm, stepping around him and yanking it behind Patroclus’s back. It’s his shield arm, already aching from the abuse levied on it today, and Patroclus’s knees buckle.

Achilles catches him with an arm around his waist and hoists him up before he can fall. Patroclus ends up pressed against his chest, his arm twisted in between them.

“I am not sending you away,” Achilles says, his voice soft and rough and very close to Patroclus’s ear. “And I am not going to fight you.” Patroclus struggles weakly, futilely, pain shooting up his arm, and Achilles grips him tighter, his nose pressing into the side of Patroclus’s head, his breath on his ear. “I’m not. And you’ve had ample chances to kill me if you wanted to, so I don’t think you actually want to fight me either. I told you that you could stay and I meant it. But I failed you today. I told you that you would be safe here, and I was wrong. I am offering you the chance to go elsewhere.”

Patroclus sags. Doesn’t he get it? Does he still not understand the depth of what he did to Patroclus?

“Nowhere is safe for me.”

Achilles loosens his grip on his arm. Patroclus feels the great sigh Achilles heaves as much as he hears it. The weight of Achilles’ head resting against his increases.

“I’m sorry,” Achilles says, and Patroclus doesn’t know if he means for just now or for always, for how he ripped that fantasy of a secure life away from him. He never thought he’d hear him say those words, and they aren’t good enough at all.

Patroclus gives a weak jerk of the shoulders, and Achilles lets him go. He doesn’t want to forgive him. He doesn’t want to play nice. He doesn’t understand why he can’t provoke him. Why can’t Achilles just do this for him? Why won’t he be the man Patroclus knows he is and lash out and hurt anyone in range?

“What happened to that hot temper of yours?” Patroclus asks, rubbing his arm.

Achilles’ lips form a thin line. “Master Chiron taught me how to aim.”

Hi, sorry if this comes out as a ramble, but your Troy ask made me rewatch the movie (for the umpteenth time, lol), and it brought a lot of old feelings back, both good and bad. The good is how much I adored the Iliad as a child and that's something that still thrives today—since I was a kid, I loved Greek mythology in general, partly because I'm Palestinian/a fellow Eastern Mediterranean, so there is a lot of overlap in our histories, cultures, customs and myths, but the Iliad has always been a favorite. Hektor is my favorite character (and I love him and Andromache), but I also have an immense soft spot for Briseis... and now to get to the bad, rewatching Troy reminded me how a lot of people erase her and her role—and her romance—to Achilles in modern retellings. Now, I'm not going to argue which Achilles ship is the best (especially because that man is a hoe, if we're being honest), I don't care. My problem is the modern erasure of Briseis and the other women in Achilles's life that are romantically entangled with him being reduced to, "He's gay, actually." It reads biphobic if you believe him queer (Patroclus too, who had many named women concubines/slaves), first off, misogynist second. He has a son with his foster "sister," Deidamia, and in some versions even married. In the Iliad especially, Patroclus tells Briseis Achilles will marry her and Achilles himself refers to her as his wife/bride, stopping a whole war when she's taken, and she's even allowed to aid in Patroclus's funeral rights. In some versions, Achilles falls for Polyxena, and tries to make peace with Troy so he can marry her. In the afterlife, Achilles chooses Helen as his wife for some reason. Just... all these women, with complex situations and feelings, are all reduced or erased in modern tellings (and usually for a man/Patroclus), and it makes me want to scream. People use the excuse of, "We don't like the romantic situation they're in," but then claim to "better" it by... erasing or reducing these women and their complex roles and feelings from the story overall? Brieseis, for example, mutually loved Achilles and saw him as a husband... he also killed her first husband and brothers, and you can argue part of her love is out of the need for survival. Yet, she greatly mourned him when he was killed, too. And if exploring this complexity is still not your yum, what about Polyxena? Wouldn't she fit the girlboss archetype of using Achilles' affections to gain his trust, before stabbing him in the back (literally)? Or Deidamia, who's young and left at home, bereft of her husband and son? Heck, try and fill in the gaps how Achilles x Hellen happened, if you must. All these women have an important role in the story, and to Achilles, that could be explored—but people don't because they dismiss what's already there or don't know anything about The Iliad outside modern retellings (mainly The Song of Achilles). So, we get people claiming things that are untrue ("Achilles and Patroclus are exclusively gay!"... in some myths, they're actually relatives/distant cousins, fun fact 😭), and acting like they fixed something by "adding" onto "flat female characters" in a way that reads inauthentic and ignorant to the source material. I get wanting to prop up one's chosen ship, it's just the hypocrisy of promising to be more progressive in one area, but diminishing the progressiveness of another, that kills me. Anyway! Sorry for the rant, I just have a lot of feelings I wanted to share because of the movie and I know you've talked about all this before—it's just something hard to discuss on the internet without people coming down your throat 🥲. Anyhow, justice for Briseis, is my rallying cry, I love her so much, queen made a whole war stop for her and managed to escape from Agamemnon unscathed. Queen who launched a thousand ships to my heart 🫶🏻.

I'm glad you re-watched it! It's a beloved of many Greeks since the movie is quite epic and makes you understand some of the original's glory. Hector, Andromache and Briseis are some of my fave characters in the movie, and it made me also look out for those characters when they appear in the text.

Btw, I would love to know a Palestinian's pov on our shared traditions and myths, how do you guys learn the Greek myths, what parts of them have had perhaps an affect on your heritage and since when, etc! ����

Briseis' situation is complicated one because many people won't catch the nuance of her living in a patriarchal society as a war captive and thus developing a strange co-dependence to her captors. In addition, the Homeric Epics are a work changed by time in the Greek society, as people added and altered stuff, so many storylines have been affected by other layers of patriarchal societies. So of course the notion of "slave girl mourning her captor's friend" would seem natural, because they probably don't consider a slave woman's POV. Or perhaps she was in the mourning because she had to be there as a woman "belonging" to the Greeks, and the text does not mention it explicitly because it a given for the era. (I don't recall the whole relevant text sorry)

I am not sure if the average author - judging by what is published in the Anglophone market - can handle the complexity of Briseis and other women in the Trojan war. For Briseis one could go for a romance there but they'd have to depict all of her psychosynthesis properly, so it doesn't come off as "Achilles killed my family but he is hot so I love him". To be fair, it is a challenging task but I am still sad that I haven't heard retellings that do this well. Such a retelling done well would be chef's kiss!

As you said, unfortunately, the writers for now focus on the couple Achilles x Patroclus which, ok, let's accept it since it's a ship and there is some background to it (although those guys are most likely 1) cousins 2) very close to each other like brethren in a way westerners misinterpret). I've enjoyed Song of Achilles and I am surely not against such works, but you are right that the female heroines are reduced to flat characters. A fandom full of women manages to be misogynistic - again. We shouldn't be surprised because misogynistic influences are very strong in our societies still, although many don't see it 😕

This is an excellent question, I have so many thoughts!!!! ( And for so, this will be long so get ready. )

Let's get to the point: girls this gorgeous man would be into.

( First i'm doing a fem version of the answer because I think of this way too often and, since I am a woman, I tend to think about it from a fem perspective. Just my regular thoughts will take a lot of space lol, so let me know If you want a male version following this reply)

For a start, Achilles as a character is stucked in a paradoxical duality. I believe is the way in which the film makers tried to tell us from a de-mythification perspective that he is a demigod. Through human lenses in his characterization, we see him in two clearly opposite phases of himself that live in constant tension.

He is a soldier who despises the power of Kings, but also a militar leader followed by the myrmidons. For moments, a simple man, yet also a hero who ambitions inmortal fame and glory. There is a part of him that is very commoner, but another that feels royal. Half mortal and half divine, mundane and exceptional at once.

Taking this to romantical themes, i think Achilles can be into girls on a wide range within this dichotomy. The film confirms it, since Briseis is the synthesis of both opposite poles ( a slave girl and a princess, simultaneously the lowest and highest a woman can be.)

Social status wouldn't be a factor conditioning the attention of the myrmidon warlord: he is as likely to go for a slave girl as he is to fall for a free common girl or a princess.

In terms of personality, I think there are 3 core traits he would seek. Achilles likes brave, clever, caring girls. How this aspects would combine would depend of the unique personality of each girl, but it's most likely they would have any form of it going on. This means they don't necesarily all need to be unapologetically outspoken like Briseis. Let's say, for example, that a shy girl stands up against something unfair. He was not used to hear her voice, but now that he did he doesn't want to stop doing it. You don't have the courage to admit your crush on him, but you are calling out a soldier of Agamemnon for abusing of his authority? Achilles is thrilled, now he won't stop paying attention to you.

He loves being surprised, his expectatives challenged even despite you may not be openly challenging him. That's where the cleverness plays a role and, like explained before, he doesn't mind the source of it. Can it be streets wit, playfull trickery or calculative thinking obtained from transiting palace intrigue. Any show of cleverness put in service of courage from a kind heart would get him.

( Movie canon supports this in the moment Briseis schemes the assasination attempt for the sake of the people he may kill. Clever act requiring courage based on the doubts from her kind heart. We can expect different combinations of those 3 aspects would result in a similar effect)

On their approach to him, he also tends to prefer girls keeping a good balance between their appreciation of his core duality. He likes to have a girl admiring all the qualities that made him famous, but will find her way more attractive if she shows to have a mind of her own.

If she is only Interested in the handsome hero, and she has catched his eye, this may evolve into casual sex, but Achilles falls in love for the woman willing to call him out from his bullshit. It doesn't have to allways develop in a negative way, with this I mean someone willing to scratch the surface of the cocky champion seen in the first ten minutes of movie because they are invested in discovering the man underneath.

To put it in other terms, it's a bit like this quote from Axl Rose I kinda remember from an Interview he did at the peak of GNR. He said that most girls wanted to date Axl as his character on stage, not him. " They don't know me, they don't necesarily want to know me. ", and this is how I think Achilles often feels.

The moment one shows up in his life invested in the complexities of his real self, he won't let her go.

Now speaking of looks, i'm more inclined to abandon canon for a bit with the hiper narrow standards of 2000's Hollywood making the only 3 girls we see him with look practically all the same except for hair colour.

It's hard for me to imagine him having a type when it comes to physical appearance. A short girl looking helpless under him? Lovely, he loves it. An amazon shaped tall girl challenging him to fight? Better call it a first date, he would be flirting the whole time. A skinny girl wearing an oversized garment of his? Perfection. A plumpy belly dancer giving him more attention than expected during a feast? Man is entranced. ( Don't let Hollywood deceive you, he would love bigger girls too. Have you seen the greek statues of curvy Aphrodite with her thick thights and soft belly?)

About his favorite body parts of his woman I can be more precise.

Canonically, he is seen paying attention to hair and I agree. The romance scenes always show some level of worship to his partner's hair. He likes to caress it, smell it, and he does it with surprising tenderness. Getting into spicier territory, I headcanon he has a thing for hips.

On it definitely is. Like I said about 90% accurate. There are times they follow the Odyssey almost line for line. They do change things (for example like I said I believe, they place the Laestrygonians before Polyphemus because of budget I would expect for they couldn't make 12 ships for the shots) also they do not show Skylla and Charybdis unfortunately but again my guess goes on budget and their capabilities (it IS 1960s after all no cgi available). They also take some liberties that seem conscious for example the discus competition was focused on a sword fight in Phaeakes Island to show how Odysseus is still absorbed at war and such. But overall I argue is the best Odyssey retelling there is and Bekim Fehmiou is amazing! Quite honest I could never imagine someone topping the classic 1950s version of the Odyssey in the sirens scenes till I saw Fehmiu! The guy just gave it all! And yes both the brief history of the location as well as the Greek theater additions made it amazing! And the way they used amazing chorus singing for the Pylos scene remains in my mind forever!

Well I see it more as a Neverending circle. They start on by wishing to change stuff for the sakes of changing (like I said I feel we changed the word "retelling" so much that we feel that a retelling should be totally unrecognizable when compared to original lol) and then the creators realize that the rest makes no sense so they have no choice but change it more and more. And yes of course feministic ideas and all...tale as old as time now...

PREV STUFF=>About Paris the musical, YEAAHH I love Patroclus too <3 it's the first time I see him being represented not as a passive character but as a fighter, which is honeslty so refreshing!! I mean he's a fighter too AND older, people can stop making him the pure innocent guy protected always by Achilles, PLEASE (again, I have a funny feeling Patroclus' character was shaped in the internet view by Madeline's retelling in TSOA)

Also I don't know why they made Odysseu not belive in gods, but what I've gathered in my research, is that technically there's a stage version of Paris in which the events take place In a rlatively modern setting? Which would explain why the gods are pretty much absent in the musical, apart for some very small parts from Aphrodite, amd why many characters question the gods so much. But I can't say for sure because sadly I've not found much information about it.

Also business is one of my favourite songs too!! It's just so fun to listen, and it's exactly for the reason you said, there are many people many interactions, and it's very true to the real thing! Just a man is also a peak choice, I honestly really like this variant of the myth of Astianax, it fits very well for Odysseus! (I personally knew another version which if I remember correctly was introduced to me in high school, in which Andromacae had to give herself as slave in order to save Astianax, but in the end the Greeks killed them both, if I remember correctly, but this one has so much more angst potential for Odysseus, so I'm good haha)

Anyways, after this long as fuck rant (sorry haha) I gotta say that a positive side we can take from the creation of these musicals is the fact that they're spreading the original myths and many are actually reading the Iliad or Odyssey because of them (I'm one of them and I've definetly convinced multiple of my friends ti read the Odyssey haha) and also many creator are mixing the original myth in these stories more and more.

I absolutely agree! Patroclus in Paris the Musical was a masterpiece! The way he has a fighter's atttude is exactly the Patroclus we need! Yes Patroclus was also extremely gentle in the Iliad (so are many other characters) but yes nothing ike this meek things we get in modern day media like TSOA and all (for real though! I mean the kid murdered someone because he lost at a game as a kid! He is NOT some poor innocent baby who wants protection! He is a strong complicated character!)

Like I said on Odysseus my money falls on the fact that usually clever or intelligent characters are portrayed as agnostic in modern day media aka "I have logic and don't believe in these stuff" but yes Odysseus not only was extremely religeous but he also talked to gods in person! I believe that in order to achieve the thing they did they left the gods outside the narrative similarly to the movie "Troy" but yes I think it is the usual stereotype of intelligent characters in media being agnostic.

Yup! I also loved the chaotic feeking of "Business" and they even included the moans of disapproval or nods of approval and the hums in the background making it very realistic indeed Well I am more on the version of Neoptolemus killing the baby instead (which is why I also had some random ideas of Odysseus "taking the blame" in my stories) but yes I really loved that part with the musical (another reason I was disappointed with the rest of it) Really? Don't remember that version. Andromache basically by general agreement she would end up a slave anyways because that was how things were done in ancient greek literature.

You have noticed from many of my comments and my notifications, memes or jokes. I am not a fan of EPIC. Not at all. I believe I am one of the most disliked people on Tumblr on mythology matters because I so openly speak my dislike against EPIC and being annoying about it! Hahaha! XD The thing I absolutely love about it is of course the guy's passion with the project, the way the music works and all (undoubtedly the guy is a very talented composer and can combine the scene with music and emotions and the tricks he uses with music are great) but the way the plot of Odyssey was twisted beyond recognition and to the point that to me you can literally change the names of the characters to anything else and still have the story he presents with the Musical. Maybe that was his goal but in my head that is not what a retelling or an adaptation is about. A retelling to me is not something that seeks to change literally as much as possible from the plot to fit the modern standards or the fanbase. A retelling is something as the word says that "retells the story" aka adapts the story as loyally as possible and adapts it to the audinece by taking creative liberties that are still generic to the story as it was originally told so that it will fit more to the modern standards or ear.

I believe we have so much twisted the word "retelling" that nowadays "retelling" seems to be equivalent to "let's change the hell out of the story because the original plot is not even THAT important to be salvaged and no modern person would watch it anyways" which in my opinion is not the case at all. Unless of course one writes satire. Then it doesn't matter, as I mentioned to another ask of mine.

I lost interest and was massively disappointed from the end of second saga and the song "Storm". The first two sagas were a masterpiece. The creative liberties were amazing to make sense with the plot and give the characters motivation (for example "I'm just a man" was FANTASTIC! The way the myth from Iliou Persis that gave us only one phrase "Odysseus kills Astyanax by throwing him off the wall" is now transformed into a marvelous emotional dilemma and a painful decision). In this case the creative liberty work WITH the plot and not against it. I didn't mind it as much that they made Polites a fluffy guy for no reason to fit that stereotypical "innocence of the team" plot because Polites is a clean slate character in Odyssey. However after Storm I started seeing your typical "Hollywood film 'adaptation' logic with changing stuff at the plot". I was intrigued at how they decided to give Polyphemus an excuse to kill like the guys enter a cave that is obviously habitable and kill an animal that is obviously domesticated and they do not know someone lives there? In the original it was clear someone lived there which made Odysseus curious to interract with them. I was willing to ignore that because ok creative liberties but then Athena was there!? And she gave Odysseus every opportunity to kill him while Odysseus was just "TOO NICE?!" like since when? Odysseus was all about killing him but he had no guarantee he would plus he needed him to open the cave. And the way he revealed his name in the musical was so rush and almost "out of spite" for Athena not a result of a secclusion in a cave for days and days and then his pride speaking up when Polyphemus called him a coward (which I tried to capture to my fic, not sure if I succeeded but still). So anyways at that point I was sure we wouldn't see the last of it with the changes. Poseidon destroys the ships instead of the Laestrygonians (no surprise there, rarely ever see anyone even mention the Laestrygonians yet alone show their contribution to the Odyssey) but then Circe happened and I just knew that we would have to derail from the original more and more

Circe's role was incredibly diminished for the sakes of making her actions more mellow and pass the message of loyalty and kindness. Circe in the original gives Odysseus valid information for his trip provisions and much more. In Epic not only we do not see the importance of Odysseus selling himself to Circe and we have Circe for some reason seducing him to kill him (removing her humanity from when she got scared that her magic won't work on him, potentially thinking he is some kind of god, begging for her safety to then suggesting her bed as Hermes predicts) I mean she had lions and wolves to her disposal she doesn't need to seduce him to kill him. Then of course Jorge realized that a big chunk of plot is missing and so he made Odysseus find out about Skylla by the sirens?! Like...okay... Even Tiresias gives him almost nothing (in the original he also tells him how to break the curse) Which seems interesting how Odysseus breaks down with "Monster" in Tiresias when he has received an act of kindess before. Wouldn't it be more amazing if he had that breakdown AFTER he paid the price with Circe with his own body? That even kindess has a terrible price? Of course the most iconic scene of the Odyssey after the murder of the suitors and Cyclops, the Sirens were twisted to whatever we had there; Odysseus listening to their song was of massive importance to his natural curiocity and we didn't get that (not to mention how would the sirens spell work on him and have Penelope there if he didn't hear their song in the first place?) and of course the fact that he kills them?! Like...how that even works I have no idea and like in the original people were running for their lives. Didn't even look back. Apparently they had all the time in the world to capture them, they knew apparently exactly how many they were and then they kill them?! Like I won't even say that they used the medieval mermaid instead of the sirens and then they "leave them drown" (how you drown fish people is beyond me! Maybe they are sharks that need to keep moving lol) and of course again that scene seemed to me that it was there only to show that "Odysseus is a monster" which makes no sense Odyssey-wise for many reasons. and then of course again Skylla; Odysseus doesn't gear up to protect his men, he is the one who chooses the sacrifice out of spite etc etc

Many others got sped up like the Helios cattle but ok I guess that is expected up to one point even if it could be handled differently but of course then we have also Zeus being a jerk and again making Odysseus choose? The storm that took the lives of his men was a natural consequence, not some twisted thing to prove how "monstrous" Odysseus is. In fact Odysseus tried till the last moment to sail away and save the lives he could (see my other analysis here) and of course again as many people said on God Games and all how Zeus was twisted yet another time although in Odyssey he had zero reasons to object apart from the natural hubris nemesis sequence. He never called Odysseus "shameful" either. In fact he says he agrees with Athena that calls him the most pious.

I think the massive change that I believe is abused by modern retellings is the whole "monster to man" trope. Odysseus losing his moral compass and "becoming the monster" and the plot around revolving to it. That was never the pont of Odyssey in my opinion. Odysseus never really lost his moral compass it is just his morality was not all pure and lovey in the first place. Was he changed by his experiences to be more ruthless in general? Absolutely but he was never changed to a monster according to Homeric version (because post-homeric versions already treat him as a villain from the get-go)

I do love the harmonies and the music in it and I love the passion and the talents of the people in it. It is just that the whole plot for me is just not it. Also maybe I am also mostly annoyed with how the "fandom logic" has taken over it. Like internet getting swarmed by it. Epic quotes or facts getting literally mixed up or associated with the original or the fact we can no longer speak on the original unless someone brings up Epic the Musical... This annoys me to no ends. Of course I recognize the passion of the fans of the musical. Is just a personal thing to me. I felt the same when people were using Percy Jackson or Miller's books to talk on mythology before. Is the same here.

Of course I need to say this all the above is my PERSONAL OPINION. I have literally NOTHING against people who love the musical and the original equally. I am just NOT one of them. Also i have nothing against the artist either. I just do not agree with his outtake. Still appreciate his hard work. However when I saw the firsttwo sagas I knew this guy KNEW his mythology which is why I feel so disappointed that his later sagas felt like "Hmm...let me use that knowledge I definitely have on Odyssey just to change the hell out of it!" And that had me very sad and lowkey annoyed because I think this guy had some real stuff to create an actual Odyssey adaptation and yet again we had your average hollywood film plot where you barely see any of the plot he ellegedly adapts

I will not take more space on this already huge and runty post that probably made me more annoying and irritating around Tumblr! XD Generally again has little to nothing to do with Iliad but I loved the music (it was arguably one of the most original choices for music for a musical) and the songs I mention to the ask. Apart from that I am ot ecstatic by it either (arguably stage musicals do not seem to work for me when it comes to the ancient classics to a large degree because of how much the plots need to be overly simplified to fit the time frame) but I am more happy that it din't get blasted out of proportions like Epic was so the plot of it doesn't even need to be pointed out that it is not accurate and all. It is self-evident. The fact that the creator of Epic needed to "warn the fans" on how inaccurate his work is, speaks volumes to me.

I will close this runt now because is already too long. I think both Epic and Paris musicals have little to nothing to do with the things they adapt but Ironically Paris the Musical changed less stuff than Epic in comparison to magnitude. Both are passionate projects with great potential and very good music but plot wise I am not anymore surprised that they do not follow the actual plots or character developments. I am surprised that Epic was more accurate to the character development of Eurylochus than the main protagonist Odysseus! Made me focus more on Eurylochus than Odysseus! Hahaha!

I am glad that the musicals make more people willing to read the originals though. For that I am grateful.

And if I have to pick one song from each musical I would say "Just a Man" and "Business" respectably but of course I like others as well especially from Epic such as "Horse and the Infant", "Will of the gods" and "Storm".

OH GOD YES I WOULD LOVE TO THANKS FOR ASKING!! The English Major in me jumped out so here's an absolute novel lmao:

Hannibal/Will:

Hannibal and Will are the easiest to draw direct parallels to because they are textually compared to Achilles and Patroclus in canon. Hannibal draws himself as Achilles and Will as Patroclus, then (because apparently he’s never heard of subtlety) shows it to Will.

Hannibal says that hiding and revealing identities is a major theme in the Iliad. Will asks Hannibal to reveal himself to Jack Crawford; in the same episode, Hannibal begins to suspect that Will has betrayed him, hiding his true intentions behind a façade to bait Hannibal into being captured by the FBI. However, Will isn’t even sure himself what his real intentions and identity is, and eventually betrays the FBI and runs away with Hannibal.

After Hannibal realizes that Will betrayed him (which is also the episode after he talks about how they’re like Achilles and Patroclus), he stabs Will in the stomach. Patroclus was killed after being stabbed in the stomach.

Hannibal and Will’s blurring identities is a major theme throughout the show. Just as Patroclus takes on Achilles’s identity on the field of war, Will takes on Hannibal’s identity in many ways—both intentionally, and unintentionally.

Patroclus dies wearing Achilles’s armor. Will is accused of being the Chesapeake Ripper, imprisoned, and could have been executed for Hannibal’s crimes if Hannibal hadn’t interfered.

Hannibal is a god-adjacent character, while Will is his more human counterpart. Will is Hannibal’s tether to his humanity, just as Patroclus is Achilles’s.

Just like Achilles couldn’t stand to be parted from Patroclus, Hannibal chose to let Will pull him off a cliff to their (probable) deaths. Hannibal would rather die with Will than live without him.

There is a significant amount of water imagery in this show. Will especially has a lot of ties to water: he likes to fish (his mind palace is initially shown to be a stream); he’s knowledgeable about boats and sailing (he sails across the Atlantic to find Hannibal); his dreams and hallucinations often include water and/or blood; he pulled Hannibal off a cliff into the ocean in a last ditch attempt to kill them both; etc. The story of Achilles also has lots of water-related motifs since Achilles’s mother, Thetis, is a sea nymph/goddess of water.

Hannibal didn’t become overtly vicious and violent toward the Great Red Dragon until he threatened to kill (and then actually stabbed) Will. Then he went totally feral and (literally) ripped Dolarhyde’s throat out. This reminds me of Achilles losing his mind and killing then mutilating Hector after Hector killed Patroclus.

Steve/Bucky:

Steve and Bucky have the “legendary beloved heroic superhuman soldier” and “childhood friend turned war companion” parallel down to a T. Steve is like Achilles: he is a born soldier who wants to fight for his country, starting out idealistic and becoming worn down and jaded by war over time. Bucky is far more reluctant to go to war but follows Steve back onto the battlefield because he believes in Steve and wants to keep him safe—especially from his own reckless righteousness. This is very similar to Patroclus’s desire to follow Achilles to war mostly out of a desire to protect and guide him away from his self-destructive, hot-headed tendencies.

Just as Patroclus put on Achilles’s armor to fight (and die) in his place on the battlefield, Bucky picks up and wields Steve’s shield just before he falls off the train to his apparent death.

Steve starts out saying that he doesn’t want to kill anybody, but after Bucky “dies”, he vows not to stop until every member of Hydra is either killed or captured. This is similar to Achilles’s reaction to Patroclus’s death, where he goes mad with grief and kills everyone in his path to get to Hector, who he then violently kills.

Additionally, after killing Hector, Achilles continues to fight recklessly until someone kills him. Similarly, Steve keeps fighting to stop Hydra but ultimately goes down with the aircraft carrying the bombs, allowing himself to drown/freeze. There’s probably ways he could have gotten out of that situation, but instead he kind of just gives in and lets himself “die” (at least that’s my interpretation).

The Captain America movies also have some interesting water imagery. Bucky falls to his “death” in a ravine, most likely falling into the frozen stream. Steve “drowns” after he crashes the plane into the ocean; in The Winter Soldier, Steve falls from the helicarrier into the Potomac, and Bucky jumps in after him. Again, the story of Achilles also contains water-related motifs due to Achilles’s mother being a sea nymph; I’m sure I could write an entire essay about these parallels before I figure out how to verbalize why this is interesting, but I’m too lazy to right now lol.

Arthur/Merlin:

Again, just like with Steve and Bucky, this is an obvious case of “famous royal golden hero of legends” and “less well-known but ultimately extremely important companion who follows him to war”. Like Achilles and Patroclus, Arthur and Merlin meet before Arthur is a famous warrior and become friends long before the “big war” that ultimately tears them apart.

Arthur and Achilles might be the famous warriors, but Merlin and Patroclus are the kind-hearted, brave, fiercely loyal companions who serve both as a fellow warrior on the battlefield, and as a moral compass. Just as Achilles looks to Patroclus for advice and as a tether to the humility and importance of humanity in the face of a great destiny, Arthur looks to Merlin.

Both Patroclus and Merlin seem at first to be ordinary men who (in the eyes of most casual observers) aren’t worthy of Achilles/Arthur’s friendship. However, they both become legendary figures of their own, without whom their legendary heroic counterparts would never have survived.

As I mentioned in the section about Hannibal and Will, the theme of hiding and revealing identities is very important in the story of Achilles and Patroclus. One of the biggest plot points in Merlin is that Merlin can’t reveal that he has magic; he doesn’t do so until the last episode, once Arthur has been mortally wounded.

Just as Patroclus always believed that Achilles would live up to his great destiny, Merlin always believed in Arthur. And even though Arthur didn’t know about Merlin’s true potential and role in his rise to the throne, Arthur believed that Merlin was one of the best, most courageous men he’d ever met. This reminds me o Achilles referring to Patroclus as Philtatos (in The Song of Achilles), meaning “best of men”.

In an inverted parallel, Arthur is the one who is stabbed and ultimately dies. Although Achilles does eventually die in war, it isn’t until after Patroclus dies. It is then implied that they will eventually meet again someday, just as Achilles and Patroclus would meet again in the afterlife after their ashes were mingled together.  

Dean/Cas:

In this relationship, Dean is very much the “reckless hero with a pre-ordained-by-the-gods destiny who is actually very flawed and carries a lot of self-doubt” and Cas is the “companion with a heart of gold who is almost embarrassingly devoted to the hero and will do anything for him”.

For Dean/Cas, there is also the parallel of struggling with a toxic parental figure who demands too much while also being emotionally absent and manipulative. For Dean, this is John Winchester, and for Achilles, this is Thetis. Cas also struggles with his relationship with his father (who is literally God lmao) and his desire to be a good soldier vs. his desire to do what’s right and to protect the man he loves.

Patroclus strives to help Achilles see that he’s more than just a weapon, and Cas and Dean both do this for each other: Dean helps Cas realize that he’s more than just another emotionless soldier of heaven, and Cas helps Dean realize he’s more than “daddy’s blunt instrument” (the phrasing of which I will still be laughing at in my grave. Thanks, CW.)

Dean’s godly destiny as Michael’s vessel is determined before he’s even born. Achilles’s godly destiny is also determined before he’s born, and neither one really has any say in it.

Patroclus ultimately dies in Achilles’s place, and Cas does the same for Dean many times. When Cas decides to help Dean escape heaven and try to save Sam and stop the apocalypse, he sacrifices himself to help Dean get away. Of the many times Cas puts his life on the line, it’s usually either to help Dean, or to save him. This is reminiscent of how Patroclus did almost everything not in the name of winning the war, or even the greater good (although he was obviously a good person), but to protect Achilles and keep him from getting himself killed.

Whenever Cas is dead, Dean’s mental health visibly deteriorates. He becomes more violent and unpredictable—a worse version of himself—just as Achilles did after Patroclus died.

Just as Patroclus acts as a tether to humanity for Achilles, Cas and Dean both act as tethers to humanity for each other. Cas pulls Dean out of Hell, restoring his humanity, and Dean helps Cas shrug off his emotionless angel identity and find some humanity of his own.

TLDR: Reckless blonde hero (or villain) with a legendary destiny/reputation and badass fighting skills + their viciously loyal brunette companion-slash-lover who's willing to die for them at a moment's notice = good shipping material

Catch Me If You Can by Set It Off: I made an amv for this song as well with them, and I really cannot think of any song that fits them more than this one to be perectly honest. I mean. Catch me if you can. But seriously it is everything with how they interact with each other. Masterpiece Theatre I by Marianas Trench: This one is Liam singing, and I think that altogether, the whole set of those three masterpiece theatre songs work for the whole series, both the anime and manga. But the first one especially. God, it works so well. It's all this incredibly guilt ridden person lamenting their great plan and how at the end they 100 percent plan to let it all be destroyed, including themself, over Yearning towards someone they're not supposed to be with and that they've been hiding a lot from. They've become all lies and fronts and they've had to ignore all their emotions for quite some time, and all they want to do is give it all up and cry into this person's arms even if it would go against everything they've worked for, even if it would kill them.

Collar Full by P!ATD: This one is pretty easy, I think both of them could be singing it at once. They're both awfully head over heels for each other and they've been pining for an ungodly amount of time that their natural state is just Yearning, but they know that if they ever got together it would be a chemical reaction that would destroy everything. All of the world is watching them and they have to hide it or die, they know if they were to be open about their secrets there would be nothing left between them to stop it from all falling apart, so they'll try to be together and try to pretend to be oblivious to why they can't. At this point though, it's been so long and all they've done is fall farther that they don't really care and they would rather collide and let the chaos happen just for the chance to embrace each other. Hell by Dear Sherlock: I cannot believe how lucky i was to come across a song by a band called DEAR SHERLOCK? But yeah this one basically delves into Liam in the final problem, in his thoughts and in his letter. He's not in a good place at all, and he's sunk to his darkest, thinking himself to basically be the devil incarnate, and things are coming to their climax, shit's going to go down, and he's obsessed with trying to get Sherlock to kill him and end it all. Liam has been holding back all his emotions for a long time and they're all going off at once and he wants to expose all of them to Sherlock alone, leaving him vulnerable. Even though it's the thing he's always been most scared of, he craves it. He knows he's in love and he knows that's a problem but he'll do anything to die at Sherlock's hands at this point and he's convinced that Sherlock must hate him enough to do it but he'll confess everything anyway.

Achilles Come Down by Gang Of Youths: Surely, everyone knows this song, and it can be way overdone, but once again... it's them. Sherlock is desperately trying to convince Liam not to jump. Liam isn't listening.

Come With Me by Chxrlotte: I've actually made a sherliam amv to this song. I just happened to stumble across it and every single lyric fits perfectly into the storyline, especially in the anime. It's super soft and shippy yknow but this one is definitely Sherlock singing it- he doesn't care if they're supposed to be on opposite sides, he wants to make Liam happy even if the whole world is against it. He'll cross any line to reach him and he wants to always be there for him and even if he has to wait years and years he'll always forgive him and no matter what he believes they'll eventually reunite.

It's Alright by Mother Mother: Man, this song always gets me, but I think this really encompasses how good they can be for each other after it all goes down. They've both been incredibly reckless, self destructive, and kind of fucked up. They each have complimentary problems that make them feel like they're barely worth being alive. But because they love each other so much and they want the other to survive and be happy, neither of them is allowed to die, and they're going to live on together and they're going to heal each other and they're going to cry to each other and embrace each other and learn to live with themselves and get better and fix everything. God, they need it so much, and they need each other.

In Our Bedroom After The War by Stars: Again, I know this song is overdone, but just imagine this after the fall? Imagine this when they're both healing from the fall and learning to live with Billy in America? And like, it's a really tentative time, they're all still hurting so much and Sherlock has got to constantly worry if Liam is gonna throw himself off the fucking roof? But he hasn't yet and it looks less and less likely that he's gonna, so that's one good thing at least. They're able to settle down and try to calm their nerves and get away from the shit that's happened, and they cling to a very domestic routine, at once still so broken but healing and constantly reminded of just how much they have to be thankful for.

Laughter Lines by Bastille: I've always thought of this as a song for nezushi (from no. 6) because of the whole eventual reunion somewhere far down the line yearning but GOD they REALLY DID THAT IN THE ANIME and even kind of in the manga they have still been separate from each other a lot and on like, other ends of the goddamn planet. They spent a long time trying to be able to reach each other and get together, and they finally got to a good spot where they're able to accept it. Because so many things happened and there was a lot yet to be done, they had to leave each other for a long time with no way to contact each other, but they'll be waiting for the time when the other can finally come back and they're both healed enough to settle down. Cries real tears.

She ran her finger around the rim of her tankard, watching as the rum inside rippled, resisting the urge to move on the barstool again. Every time she shifted, the fabric of her pants rubbed against her wound, and she pressed a hand to her hip, fingers gently prodding the bandage she’d hastily tied earlier. Two hours she’d been back in New York and already she was running from assassins again. A disgruntled sigh left her lips and she moved her hand from her hip to the bar, scratching a groove into the wooden top. A figure sat down next to her, and for a moment, she assumed it was the man she was waiting for, but the scent of sea salt and oak reached her nose, and she drew her gaze from the ratty flag above the bar to look at him out of the corner of her eyes. He wasn’t looking back at her, gesturing to the bartender, accented voice, one she recognized as Irish, calling, “A pint for me and-” She watched as he leaned over, glancing into her tankard before adding, “And fill up the lass’s rum too!” The bartender acquiesced, filling up her drink before he handed the man a pint, wandering off towards another patron. The man didn’t say anything, simply taking a drink of his beer, and she decided to breach the silence between them, murmuring,

           “Is this the game you play with all your targets? Buy ‘em a round then stab ‘em?” The man chuckled.

           “Game? I never play games with beautiful lasses like yourself.” She hummed, switching the tankard to her other hand, leaving her dominant hand free in case of defense as she observed,

           “Small bar. Too crowded. Not enough space for us to fight. Too many innocent bystanders.” He went silent and she turned her head, fully taking in his image. Coffee eyes narrowed as they peered at her, and she quipped, “Can you seriously see with that mop on your head?” His brows furrowed and he reached up, running a hand through his shaggy brown hair.

           “My hair’s not that bad.” She snorted, taking another sip of her drink.

           “Just keep telling yourself that babe.” The tankard set against the bar and she let her voice become carefree as she threatened, “I know who you work for, and if you’re here, you know who I work for.” She stared him down. “You’re new to your little band, nowhere near as experienced as I am…do you really think you can take me on?” She watched as his hand that wielded his hidden blade twitched and before he could move, she jerked forward, one hand clapping his wrist to the bar, the other drawing a dagger to his torso. His eyes went wide as reality caught up with him and she quipped, “I’ll say it again, you know the man I work for, so you know exactly how experienced I am. With that being said, I don’t think it’s fair to slay people who’ve barely started their careers. So, we don’t really need to take this outside…we can simply let bygones be bygones and you can leave with your life. Sound good?” She watched his jaw clench, but he swallowed thickly and nodded, audibly sighing with relief as she pulled away, sheathing her dagger. He stood from his seat and turned, but stopped when she grabbed his wrist, and he looked down at her. “This is your only freebie assassin. Come after me again and I will kill you.” The Irish assassin yanked his arm back, spitting,

           “My name is Shay Cormac, and I will come for you again.” She narrowed her eyes, feeling a smile cross her lips as she replied,

           “(Y/N) (L/N). And I wait for your return.” He gave her one last glare before stalking off, and a minute later, another man took his spot, pushing the pint of beer away.

           “Who was your friend (Y/N)?” She huffed as she reclined against the bar, elbows resting atop it.

           “Some new assassin Achilles has recruited.” The man sighed.

           “And you let him walk away?” (Y/N) chuckled, glancing over at him.

           “Meh, he’s a shit assassin anyway. I knew he was here the moment he walked in.”

           “How so?” The man gestured for a beer and she grabbed her rum, taking a swig.

           “Most people, especially the rare men who aren’t idiots, leave the extremely well-armed woman alone when she’s drinking at the bar.” The corners of his mouth rose, but they quickly dropped, and she remarked, “Oh I know that look.” Leaning over, she nudged him in the side, the side glare he tossed her only egging her on. “That’s your ‘trouble in paradise’ look.” He scoffed.

           “I do not have ‘looks’ and you do not know them.” (Y/N) simply hummed, watching as he stared into his drink.

           “You hoping you can drown in that beer, Haytham?” When he didn’t respond, she murmured, “She found out you lied to her about Braddock, didn’t she?” He let out a grunt.

           “I don’t want to talk about it.” A sadistic grin crossed her lips and she downed the last of her rum, waving the empty tankard to the bartender.

           “Oh, you don’t, but I sure as hell do.”

           “Of course you do. You’re nothing if not nosy.” (Y/N) nodded as the bartender poured her another round, and she asked,

           “Can you fix it?” Haytham frowned and responded,

           “She told me if I returned that she’d rip my heart out with her bare hands and feed it to the wolves, so, no…I can’t fix it.” She nodded knowingly, quipping,

           “Gotta give her points for her restraint. If I was her, I probably would’ve done it anyway.” (Y/N) looked over at him and rested a hand on his forearm, drawing his eyes to her. “Look to the future Haytham. Perhaps the best is yet to come.” He tried to form a smile but only managed a grimace, and she joked, “Or maybe you lied away the best thing you’ll ever have. Whatever comes, you’ll still have me.” This time, a smile did form, and he chuckled.

           “You can’t offer me sympathies without the wisecracks, can you (Y/N)?” She shrugged, pulling her hand away.

           “I told you not to lie to Ziio. I told you it wasn’t wise to lie to a woman like her, but you ignored me and did so anyway. You’ve made this bed my dear. You don’t get to complain about resting in it.” Haytham’s face pinched and he turned to her, the anger evident in his voice as he bickered,

           “I do not need you to tell me what I already know.” (Y/N) matched his glare as she retorted,

           “Someone has to. You’ve grown a big head since coming over here and if you want to stay alive, you need to be knocked down a few pegs. No one else in this godforsaken order has the balls to talk back to you save me, so do me a favor and man up, because until I make you feel as worthless as you made Ziio feel, I’m-” She was suddenly cut off as he grabbed her arm, voice raised as he shouted,

           “I already feel worthless about what-” Sensing the eyes of the other patrons on him, Haytham went silent, taking a deep breath before calmly stating, “I already feel worthless (Y/N). I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I left our camp.” Eyeing him a moment, she pursed her lips and nodded.

           “Then I’ll relent…for now.” Haytham grunted and she waved the bartender over, handing the empty tankard to him. “Give him something stronger, and something to eat for us both.” As he walked away, Haytham rose, saying,

           “There are other things I need to attend to.” (Y/N) huffed and drug him back down.

           “Sit down. Tonight you’re going to drown your sorrows in ale and good food and complain to your best friend about every terrible thing in your life.”

           “Are you counted in the terrible things?” She snorted, digging into the food the bartender set in front of her.

           “Excuse you, I’m the only ray of sunshine you’ve got left.” Haytham snorted as he began to eat.

           “I don’t know about sunshine…you’re more of a thunderstorm.” (Y/N) smiled at him.

           “I’ll take what I can get Hayth.”

           “You know I hate it when you call me that.”

           “And I don’t care. Tell me something I don’t know.” A silence encompassed them, and she realized he had switched moods, the Grandmaster of the Templar Order coming out as he stated,

           “What’s happened is in the past, and we need to look forward to the future.” She nodded and he continued. “Boston is secure, we’ve made sure no assassins can come in, but here…what do you know about New York?” (Y/N) scoffed as she bit into the roll and divulged,

           “I didn’t get a hundred feet in here when I was attacked by a group of assassins.” She raised her shirt, showing the bandaged wound. “One of the sonsabitches stabbed me in the side, which I’m still pissed off at.” She swallowed and added, “New York? Haytham, we can’t touch New York. This city is in their hands, from the shopkeepers even down to the gangs.” He thought on her information before asking,

           “Do you think you can get in and disorganize them?” (Y/N) reached up, scratching at the back of her neck as she offered,

           “I might? Guerilla warfare is the best I can do. Get a group in, mess up some operations, and get out. But…if I do that, then they’ll just pick up and move to another location. If you want me to secure New York like we have Boston, I need men, and a lot of them. Or, just a few well-trained soldiers.”

           “Would redcoats do?” She waved a hand, dismissing,

           “Those jackasses couldn’t pour piss out of a boot even if the instructions were written on the heel. I need thoroughly trained men, not boys pretending to be someone worthy of attention.” Haytham nodded, then he paused, noticing the lack of sound in the tavern.

           “It’s quiet.” Having noticed it too, (Y/N) muttered,

           “Indeed…much to quiet for a bar at eight on a Friday night.” A quick glance to the bartender beginning to cower behind the bar made her suspicious. Taking a look behind her, she turned back to the bar, and he queried,

           “How many?”

           “Sixteen. Eight for each of us.”

           “Men?”

           “Four women, the rest are men.”

           “Heavies?”

           “Six.” She paused, wiping her mouth on the napkin. “Two are coming this way, a heavy and a woman. She’s on my side, he’s on yours.” Haytham mirrored her movements, wiping his own mouth before offering,

           “I’ll go over, you go under?” (Y/N) grinned at him, and as the two assassins reached them, the two twisted, Haytham going above, her underneath, and the sound of metal meeting flesh, followed by pained screams echoed through the tavern.

and by “little post” I mean “whoops, not quite as little as I’d intended. sorry. lemme toss up a readmore after Dayir’s bit” (believe it or not, this is the short version. I can always Say More)

originally (well, “originally”) from the Azim Steppe, so accepts “Dayir of the Steppe” as a form of address, but privately regards “Dayir of the In-Between” and “Dayir of the Prim” to be far more appropriate when it comes to place of origin

Ishan, Hound of Darkness

a walk-in from the Lifestream (allegedly) who found himself bound to the body of a minor Ishgardian lordling who’d gone missing from Carteneau and was assumed dead

(the name assigned to said body was Seraphin Arnaud Laurent Augureau. Ishan never uses it and wants nothing to do with that man’s life. this all becomes a huge point of contention during the HW arc, as you can imagine)

Ishan’s eyes don’t match because of the soul switcheroo, so one of his eyes looks like the body’s (hazel) and the other eye is just Ishan’s (blue-grey)

has memories of living on the Thirteenth World, before the botched Rejoining, and on his belated way to the First he is given a remnant of this voided planet, an eldritch black orb that is now a fuckin loaded Chekhov’s gun that I have to figure out a use for (probably around 6.0 sometime I’ll figure it out)

Ishan does not join Dayir on the First until the confrontation with Hades in Amaurot, because the magic the Exarch was using to port them over scared the fuck out of him and he found a way to put up wards against it. it was a struggle but eventually he shoved his fear aside to go find his bestest dearest companion Dayir and punch the Exarch in the teeth

extremely combative. (Elidibus has a lot to say about Ishan’s penchant for destruction, but Elidibus can also shut the hell his mouth.) daggers are his preference, although he’s not always particular and is known to get real creative in a pinch

hates Garlemald more than anything (don’t even mention the whole Zenos business, he’s still embarrassed and will slice your achilles tendons just for saying anything)

important canon-divergence notes

Haurchefant Greystone’s wholly unnecessary demise is prevented by the fact that while Ishan was the WoL that was gunning for the archbishop, Dayir was the WoL that sensed Ser Zephirin doing his thing and popped a powerful aethershield over eir boyfriends

Moenbryda’s sacrifice was unnecessary as Dayir’s store of aether is far greater than the average dude’s and ey had no problem conjuring a fat aetherblade blunt for Nabriales to smoke. she persists as a Scion to vex her childhood bestie forevermore

Au Ra are the result of a successful Allagan experiment. this technically includes Dayir, but the experiment that led to em was a bit different and so is eir existence on Hydaelyn. Dayir is culturally an Au Ra but biologically more Allagan (and draconic, ofc) than anything else

Dayir and Ishan are both Azem shards, but obviously skewed towards particular facets of Azem’s personality -- Ishan represents Azem’s Martian energy, their righteous anger and passion for change; Dayir represents their depthless joy and passion for life. Dayir and Ishan’s character flaws are basically results of being a bit unbalanced in their personality traits this way (like how Dayir is capricious and easily led to despair, and Ishan is aggressive and has a hard time connecting with others)

(it can be understood that they echo the spirits of Hydaelyn and Zodiark this way, as well as the Amaurotians that formed their hearts, and I bet Emet-Selch's commented on it once or twice)

they are also both possessed of godshards -- when Louisoix did his Thang, a bit of Nymeia found its way to a strange dreamy young adult in the Steppe and a bit of Rhalgr found its way to an Ishgardian who was dying on the field and was big mad about it

they do not kill Emet-Selch in a big battle. Dayir unmakes Hades at his request. being of the In-Between, though, Hades’ essential self still exists, just not on the mortal plane. he now gets to dwell in a new place of his own creation -- not the lost city of his grieving heart, but a place that is his and his alone

Meet Crowley, King of Hell

Now:

Crowley is busy torturing...himself? Nope, it’s an Alpha Shifter. He informs Crowley that when he dies, he goes to Purgatory. Crowley wants more information. 

Crowley’s holding a bunch of baby shifters for leverage on information about Purgatory’s location. The shifter won’t budge so Crowley chops his head off. 

At night, the Winchesters arrive at a factory to drop off one rugaru to a couple of demons. Dean asks about Crowley but they’re not on the Need to Know list. 

Dean and Sam head back to their hide-a-way home. Dean is done dealing with demons, but Sam points out they don’t have any other plan. Dean wonders if Sam wants his soul back. Sam points out that he’s working for Crowley. Dean walks off to get some booze and when he turns to talk to Sam some more, Sam’s gone. He pulls his gun and wanders to a side room, where he finds Sam passed out on the floor. A demon comes behind Dean and knocks him out too. 

Cut to the boys tied up and Meg walking into the room. 

She’s looking for Crowley. She holds a knife to Dean’s neck for information when Sam laughs (much to Dean’s stress) and realizes that she can’t kill them. She’s running from Crowley. Sam tells her that they’ll work with her to find Crowley but they want the first stab at him before she finishes him off. 

Once free, Dean is angry and asks Sam what the heck he’s doing making a deal with the demon that killed Ellen and Jo. Sam says they need her. Ah, soulless Sam is always the pragmatist. Sam assures Dean that they will kill Meg and her minions the first chance they get-- they’re bringing insurance. 

Later, Sam is outside, praying to Castiel. Cas doesn’t appear. He then starts describing the plot to Raiders. That Biblical artifact thirsty boy is there in a heartbeat. Sam wants Cas’s help but Cas is in the middle of things upstairs. Sam threatens to kill Cas if he doesn’t help them. 

Ahem, let’s all pause at Cas’s retort and bask in the pure BAMF energy.

“Will you...boy?”

Whew. 

Anywho. 

Sam does get Cas to come back to their place.

Dean is surprised (ok, but like dude, if you really wanted him to show, why didn’t you pray? We’ve already seen him show when you pray to him. You don’t have a profound bond for nothing.)

Cas performs a locating spell, but it doesn’t work. They head to the Campbell bunker of knowledge and Samuel finds them. Dean demands to know where Crowley is. Samuel isn’t talking. Dean then asks Cas to leave (which kinda blows my season 15 brain ---they have so much more to go through to be a real family.) Dean asks Samuel what Crowley has on him. He pulls out a picture of Mary and tells them that Crowley is going to bring her back if he helps him. Dean tells him that it’s a path he doesn’t want to go down --this is how the bad guy gets them every time….AGGHh, Chuck!!! Dean also uses the word Achilles heal again (ahem.) Also, they will find another way. Samuel kicks them out.

Later, the brothers are busy working on research while Cas indulges in his favorite pastime: watching porn TV. 

He’s very confused. Dude’s been watching humanity for eons but he’s clueless AF. Dean is appalled that he’s watching porn without him in front of them. 

Samuel arrives and is disturbed by their group activities. He has the location where they drop the monsters they’ve been collecting. The monsters never leave. 

Team Free Will meet up with Meg and her gang.

Meg hopelessly flirts with Cas. Then they get down to the business of tracking Crowley. Sam demands her knife and then proceeds to kill one of her demon buddies. He was justified though and they all know it. 

Sam loads up on weaponry, while Dean spends some quality time (awkward silences) with Cas. Cas is glum. He expresses doubt about their plan to get Sam’s soul back. Cas describes the likely situation in the cage: Lucifer and Michael have been using Sam’s soul as a toy. 

Cas projects a future of madness and trauma on an ensouled Sam. Dean chooses to glibly ignore this because he has utter faith that with Cas’s help, they can do anything. (Crying noise) In the shadows, Sam overhears everything. 

Outside Crowley’s compound, the team starts their assault. The side door is unlocked, making it laughably easy to get in. The Winchesters smell a trap! The interior is lined with cells, many of them occupied by monsters - dead or alive. A djinn from an earlier episode pleads for help. Crowley’s got some kinda reach, alright!

In the distant hallways, a hellhound snarls. The camera zooms in on poor, traumatized Dean.

Everybody runs for it, and a demon falls to the hound. Meg is 100% done with the high death rate of demons in the Winchesters’ company and tries to smoke out. She opens her mouth to no avail - Crowley’s warded the place in such a way that it keeps demons firmly attached to their meatsuits. She’s in this for the (hopefully) long haul. Sam hands her Ruby’s knife so she can kill hellhounds, but Meg turns it down. The Winchesters will need that to kill Crowley. She’s got another plan. 

But first, uh, she has ANOTHER another plan?

Meg kisses Cas, her hands sliding under his trench coat in a way that we have definitely not ever pictured doing in any way. Nope. 

He spins her around and pins Meg to the wall in a way that we have definitely not ever pictured Cas doing in any way. Nope.

“I learned it from the pizza man,” Cas tells a stunned Meg. 

Meg shakes it off and hoists Cas’s blade, purloined from his coat. (What did she do, snake her arm down his sleeve? Lol) She’ll fight off the hounds with that instead. She slashes at the hound while the others move on. 

A bright light flashes suddenly, and Cas disappears just as Samuel pulls his hand away from an angel banishing sigil. Samuel, you giant bag of dicks! He betrayed the Winchesters to resurrect Mary. Crowley and his demons swan in and gain control of Sam and Dean. 

The Winchesters are tossed into cells. Meg, injured but victorious after her fight with the hounds, gets attacked by a demon possessing Christian Campbell. 

Samuel stops by Dean’s cell to explain himself, and Dean bitterly reprimands him for his betrayal. Samuel insists that Mary’s his blood, and Dean and Sam aren’t close enough to count. “What exactly are you supposed to be to me?” Samuel asks, further cementing my hatred of his character. 

Dean looks up and his MASK OF REVENGE is clearly pulled over his face. “I’ll tell you who I am. I’m the guy you never wanna see again.” CHILLS. He promises revenge on Samuel. 

Samuel walks away from his little confessional moment, and two demons arrive to drag Dean away. 

Meg, meanwhile, has been stripped of her clothing for sOMe ReaSoN. The only things covering her up are the warded bands pinning her to a torture table. I. Just. Why? Why, show? (Excuse me while I glare directly at Robert Singer from across many, many miles.) To Meg’s credit, she looks like she’s ready to do some cool murder (I’ll help). Demon!Christian starts to torture her. 

Sam chews a hole in his own arm while he waits in his cell, which is not disturbing AT ALL. DAMN, soulless Sam! Dean arrives in Crowley’s interrogation room, and it’s full of bloody bays and intestines. SO unsanitary. The demons chuck two monsters in with him. It’s to be a cage match, I see! 

When demons arrive to grab Sam, they find that they’re trapped in his cell. Sam grins with a bloody mouth at the demon trap he scrawled on the ceiling with his own blood. I mean…GROSS but mad props all the same. 

Meg continues to get tortured when Dean creeps up and kills Demon!Christian. He frees Meg and they start operation, GET CROWLEY. Sam and Dean lure Crowley in with a fire alarm and trap him in a demon trap. (This one’s spray painted, thank goodness.) 

Sam demands his soul back from Crowley, but ye olde King of Hell refuses. He can’t get into the cage to rescue Sam’s soul. Crowley questions WHY Sam would want his soul back, after all his soft marshmallowy center is surely enduring in the pit. Dean hands Ruby’s knife to Meg and she heads into the demon trap to kill Crowley. 

Crowley proves why he’s the reigning King (or at least how he’s stayed alive for so long) by tackling Meg and flinging the demon knife up into the ceiling to split apart the devil’s trap. Things are looking bad for our heroes when Cas flaps in. “Castiel,” Crowley smiles. “Haven’t seen you all season.” Cas presents a bag of bones and informs the room that he’s found Crowley’s skeleton. 

Crowley bows to the threat and lets the Winchesters go. When he admits that he really, really can’t save Sam’s soul, Cas burns the bones. It’s…DRAMATIC.

Outside, Cas confesses that the battle in Heaven is going poorly but that there’s nothing the Winchesters can do to help.

“I wish circumstances were different. Much of the time I would rather be here,” Cas confesses. CAS! Dean forgives him and Sam gives Cas one more mission before he flaps off to Heaven: destroy the monsters locked up in Crowley’s prison. Cas flaps off (and into my spin-off show, SAD ANGEL ASSASSIN). Dean promises Sam that they’ll figure out another way to get his soul, but Sam argues against any plans at restoration. He’d rather be functioning and soulless, thank you very much. Sam walks away, leaving Dean shouting fruitlessly after him.

Heavily cluttered, as many Bucklemming eps are, but worth the trip. There was a lot of goodness in 15.08 and there were two moments where I shrieked out loud.

My two out loud-shriek moments, let’s get that out of the way: 

Queen Rowena. Caaaaalled it.

Dean and Cas are going back??? To???? Purgatory???? Together?????? And Bobo???? Is???? Writing the episode???????????? *SHRIEKING AND FLAILING*

Okay more orderly and sedate now. Eileen is so damn fierce. She’s a very physical fighter, she’s smart but seems to use a blunt fighting skill. She can punch HARD. I love watching that so so much. I would enjoy female characters on SPN like this regardless, but the fact that this is a hero character with a disability and it’s never a big deal is deeply refreshing and SPN did something really really right bringing her back, amen.

Protective Sam shows up and Eileen is happy to see him but literally pushes him aside so she can make the kill. She doesn’t need his protection, but she also values him as a hunting partner as the ep shows. Also they’re trying to build a relationship here. Eileen seems used to hunting solo and Sam wants to offer backup, and he got worried. 

So the plan is to lock up Chuck like Chuck locked up Amara. The sweet irony of this delights me. He tried to shut away the divine feminine rather than actually stepping up to deal with his sister as, well, a person (well, a divine deity, but still, a being with feelings and thoughts and complexities). Chuck, the arrogant and narcissistic toxic masculinity God, maybe to be locked up now instead as his hubris and his lack of empathy and his petulance is exposed. What if Amara was the more competent deity all along? 

There is no way Dean doesn’t know what an Achilles’ heel is. The random WTF of this is so much it’s not even angering it’s just so bizarre. LOL what even. Look I am really enjoying S15 but I hope the butterfly net tightens on stopping this kind of thing because honestly. I’ll just pretend that scene isn’t there. Luckily I enjoyed the episode overall a lot.

Team Free Will in research mode together in the bunker just really makes me happy. Cas is where he belongs.

Donatello!Chuck threatening Jody, Donna, Eileen, “pretty much everyone on your speed dial” as a deterrent to Sam and Dean is bearing out again my impressions of how Chuck views these characters. I’m still not 100% sure what he thinks of Cas who is right in the room but Chuck doesn’t seem to acknowledge him, except as some sort of right arm to Sam and Dean, as I’ve said in other posts, I think Chuck regards him as a nuisance now, and a deterrent to his miserable endings, and a pawn. Just like Donna, Jody, and Eileen, to him, they’re just pawns. They’re all people Sam and Dean care about, and Chuck will use them to keep his two favorites in line.

See what I did there?

Yeah. Chuck doesn’t care about the characters as people. Everyone except Sam and Dean are expendable and tools to be used so he can control Sam and Dean and that’s it. He’ll destroy them with a snap of his fingers and won’t care. Look at that. Familiar attitude, isn’t it. How interesting.

“If you want to stay here, stay here.” Dean’s gone back to not!listening to Cas I see. While Cas is Dean-avoidant and trying not to look at him throughout the episode. But both of them are thawing just a little.

Like when Cas heals Dean’s cut palm and the way it’s staged looks like he’s going to take Dean’s hand to do it which I don’t think is an accident. That moment was meant to be soft.  Dean didn’t ask. Cas offered. And Dean didn’t jerk his hand away or say no. Then there’s the fact that Cas is going to go with Sam and Dean into Hell despite all his misgivings about Michael and this entire plan. 

Team Free Will, getting all researchy together, and then getting all BAMFY together with their angel blades going into Hell.

We didn’t get any kind of nod back to Dean and Cas’s last visit together to Hell and that’s the second time they have been back to Hell (well the last time was some sort of Hell ante-room, the cage was brought up iirc) and SPN failed to nod to it, WHY AM I CONTINUALLY DENIED THIS.

“Hello, boys.” There it is. My actual shriek of delight. I hope it didn’t alarm the neighbors.

“I took it.”  Yes you did, my red-headed goddess queen of the underworld. You sure did. GET IT ROWENA. Rowena won the game of thrones. Boom.

She’s a little flirty with Sam, still has a soft spot for him I think. 

And then starts playing marriage counselor for Dean and Cas. “What am I picking up with you two? A wee tiff?....So fix it.” Someone called this, I’m fairly certain, that if Rowena saw Dean and Cas again during their divorce she’d size that situation up and down and comment on it. FIX IT. So say we all.

“Family sucks.” Jake Abel did such a fantastic job in this. tbh I didn’t give much thought to Adam all these years, it seemed like SPN was never going back there. I liked Jake’s performances in S5, but it just seemed like a story that was over. But Jake Abel, man. He comes back after all this time and owns the dual roles and made me care. With a performance that was alternately fearsome and vulnerable. 

“That’s adorable.” Dean is SO happy about Sam and Eileen, he looked so soft, and still a bit not okay because his chosen other half is barely looking at him, but mostly Dean’s rooting for Sam to have some happiness. “If it was to work, she gets it, she gets us, she gets the life.” It’s a retreated on Sam’s speech back during “Baby” about someone...something...who understands the life. And Sam has found that with Eileen.

Meanwhile Cas is right there, with Dean, with this great big chasm still open between them but...he’s there. And all the arrows point towards him for Dean. 

Dean and Cas are being magnets again. Not like in S14 where every time there is a crisis they stand very close together and are drawn together, now they’re like magnets that are trying not to feel the pull but they cannot escape each other’s pull nor do they really want to, but they can’t quite figure out how to cross the distance. 

There’s more than one scene where Dean or Cas is out of focus and the other in focus, as if to emphasize how they’re both there but not in phase with each other. Not yet.

I so enjoyed the Cas and Michael stuff. Cas’s prayer to Michael, Michael’s mad on for Cas. “Oh, I didn’t come to beg.” And there’s the ruthless strategic angel.

There’s also something really...fitting about Sam and Dean and Cas all being the ones standing outside the ring of holy fire together to trap an archangel who they effectively hope to bring in from the cold, to their side, in a post S6 era of the show. 

“To paraphrase a friend you had an entire oak tree shoved up your ass.” I see Cas is still quoting Dean, having Dean as a compass point or a North star. Even if he can barely look at Dean right now.

Cas telling Michael his unimportance to God and keeping the upper hand is just...so satisfying. Cas has grown so much. I keep thinking about S5 Cas and how despite how powerful Cas was back then, radiating power in ways he doesn’t quite do the same way now, Cas always seemed so...smol next to the archangels. Punching above his weight class. But now he faces down Michael and tells Michael rawly how it is with their dad Chuck. And when Michael tries to choke him, he fights past it and goes into Michael’s mind to show him everything, to help him see the truth. Cas has grown so much, this felt a lot like a little brother constantly picked on leaves home, grows, and comes back to find big, big brother isn’t quite as big and intimidating as he remembers. 

Which in fact he isn’t, because Michael is capable of insight and change and feelings too. He’s not his father. Despite being the favorite. Despite clinging still to his hero-worship. But Cas worked past that with Chuck long ago.

When Eileen’s friend needs help on a hunt, and Eileen goes to Sam, Sam goes with her, no doubts. Tells Dean he’s going, as Dean recounts to Cas, and Dean seems cool with it. 

Sam and Eileen seem to be growing closer and closer, and while there is something tentative about Sam, he definitely is drawn to her and cares. That tentativeness is from past hurt and loss and maybe he’s scared to enter into this kind of relationship. But they’ve got their own magnetic pull together, they fit. 

Dean and Cas facing each other in that bunker kitchen, the lighting darker and colder than usual. They’re facing each other, and each shift in and out of camera focus, not looking at each other much. Cas can’t look at Dean at all in this scene, while Dean keeps sneaking glances at Cas. In other scenes, Cas does sneak looks at Dean. They are ridiculous and my heart hurts. The blocking here is them facing each other only not--they are a few feet off, so looking past each other.

Cas sitting at that table, hands folded, staring straight ahead and working very hard obviously to Not Look at Dean. 

Dean’s reaction on Cas reporting the words Michael said, “I want you dead, get out.” The things Dean has said to Cas are coming back to haunt him, coming from the words of their once mortal enemy, that’s gotta sting.

Both Dean and Cas have some work to do here, but Dean definitely is already very aware his own words went too far, and has been for a while. 

“God lied to me. I loved him.” Oh wow that hurt, I didn’t expect these feelings. 

A thing about Adam and Michael, both feeling so abandoned by their families, and losing everyone. They offered support to each other. They worked out a time-share in Adam’s body. We’ve seen genuine vessel and angel bonds form before (in Lily Sunder). There’s also a S7 episode by Ben Edlund about the bond between a human and the demon who possessed him. Not sure how healthy Adam and Michael are, but they seem weirdly functional, and don’t despise each other and I kind of have some feelings about Adam and Michael bonding the way they did in The Cage. Perhaps Michael shielded Adam from the worst of it. It’s how Adam is coherent after being down there for so long. Maybe Adam made Michael less lonely. Did I ASK for feelings about Adam and Michael, no I did nOT and yet here we are.

Then there’s Adam. It was interesting that scene where Sam acknowledges maybe they gave up too easily. Because Sam and Dean refuse to accept it when it’s each other they lose, and have gone way over the line to get the other one back. Here Sam is admitting that it shouldn’t be just for them. That Adam was worth saving. Even though they don’t know him well, he still didn’t deserve what happened (as Dean acknowledges at the end of the ep). And Sam and Dean never mentioning him again or giving him another thought apparently, all these seasons...well, that kind of made me assume that was that. Just because someone is blood, doesn’t make you family and they barely knew Adam. 

But if it’s someone who could potentially earn that? Someone basically good? And they just...forgot about him and left him to his torment in Hell? So this did need addressing. There’s not much time to develop a relationship with Adam and TFW this late in the game but there was a start here. 

Dean likewise offers his apology to Adam at the end. “You’re a good man. You didn’t deserve that.”

Right when I was thinking, so many of them don’t get what they deserve, they just keep getting Hell heaped on their heads, Adam says “Since when do we get what we deserve.”

There’s a subtle thing there where Adam looks at Cas, Cas very pointedly still tries to be not looking at Dean, and after Adam leaves Dean turns to Cas looking so...sorrowful for a moment. I keep saying, Dean and Cas deserve each other, and right now they can’t figure how to have each other. 

But Michael left them a strange gift. The Leviathan flower, to seal away Chuck, but the gift has a double meaning (unintentionally on Michael’s part). It’s not just the tool to shut away the villain, Michael opens a door to Purgatory and boom just like that, opens up a whole doorway on Dean and Cas’s story because of the emotional significance of Purgatory for them. What they had there. What happened there. The way that place broke loose some of their feelings. I’m not sure what’s going to happen now, if they both go, as the promo glimpses seem to suggest, does one return and the other gets trapped? Is Dean’s prayer to Cas going to be inside Purgatory, is Cas also still in Purgatory and they get separated? Is being thrown together back into that environment going to help them heal? Or will they be torn apart again but that provides another route to reconciliation?

Technically, Jo knows from watching memories and from watching real life interactions so it's the same as Diyoza knowing just by observing. Clarke could still be completely oblivious especially because that's what self doubt does

lol oh man. ok SO i basically figured out while i was writing this reply that this was one of those things where it was like: i totally knew what i meant when i said it but clearly had ZERO PLAN for actually articulating it because i had no idea how to explain what i was trying to say lol. so here is me basically just word vomitting and trying to sound out exactly what i meant by this even though i knew what i meant. also this got really long and rambly and might have diverged from the actual point so just, like, bear with me lol…

i could see the point about Clarke thinking Josephine was just seeing something that wasn’t really there or Jo knowing just by observation. BUT, technically, Jo isn’t really just an third party observer or an objective and unbiased watcher is she? or at least, she’s not an observer in the sense that she’s on the outside looking in. she is distinctly on the inside, literally inside Clarke’s mind. she’s also not watching Clarke’s interaction with Bellamy in real time. she is watching past actions and events, and gaining access to past emotions and feelings, all conveyed from Clarke’s pov. yes, Jo is acting completely based on her interpretation of Bellamy and Clarke’s relationship. but THAT interpretation is still completely based in and on the way that Clarke, and Clarke’s own subconscious and subjective memories, are conveying the information. we always present information with a bias, we are always creating a narrative, even if we aren’t conscious of it. and so everything Jo has been able to determine about Bellamy and Clarke’s relationship has come from the story that Clarke’s memories showed her.

there is this quote i really love by May Sarton: memory is merciless. and i would say that is definitely true for Clarke. we know for a fact from Clarke’s own projections that Clarke’s memories that Clarke does have a lot of self doubt. Clarke doesn’t do herself any favors, she doesn’t cast herself in any kind of overly positive light at all, and there are so many things she’s done that obviously still haunt her. and we know Clarke has some unresolved guilt about Bellamy specifically. we know both from actual!Clarke putting “leaving Bellamy in the fighting pits” as her sin in her lantern, and from mind space!Clarke and her interactions with projection!Bloodreina (“i thought you actually cared about Bellamy.”) also based on that conversation, we also know Clarke clearly has some doubts surrounding her relationship with Bellamy and whether or not he actually forgave her. it would be really easy, i think, for Clarke’s memories to paint a pretty harsh picture of her and Bellamy’s relationship and his opinion on her. but based on Jo’s actions towards Bellamy and the things she’s said to him, i don’t think that’s the case.

Josephine has different strategies for when she simply wants to antagonize people vs. when she wants to manipulate them. and we know Jo has used romantic relationships specifically to manipulate others thus far...

with Abby, her trump card go-to’s were Kane and Jake, men Abby loved. one man she lost, and another man she was terrified of loosing.

she also did it to Clarke: “that’s why you always cry when you think of Lexa.”

additionally, looking back, not only do we know that this particular persuasive technique isn’t necessarily new to her; but also that it’s been used on her and she knows from personal experience that it works. in 6x06 (Memento Mori) Russel asks her “what the hell's the matter with you? have you become so callous to the feeling of others that you don't remember what it's like to lose someone you love?” at this point I think it’s relatively safe to say that he was talking about Gabriel, and that clearly had an effect on her.

if Jo’s goal was to just to get a rise out of Bellamy, there are soooo many other things that she could have brought up...

the estranged sister he couldn’t save.

the dead mother he got locked up.

participating in Pike’s nighttime attack on the Grounder army.

being locked up and tortured in mount weather.

the first and second Mount Weather massacres, both of which he feels somewhat responsible for.

And that would just be naming a few. There are even explicitly romantic relationships she could have used...

Gina- the ex GF whose death he feels responsible for. “too bad you were never that devoted to Gina.”

Ech0-the current gf who tried to kill his sister. hell he thought for a while that she DID kill his sister.  the woman who he trusted as an ally who then turned around and stabbed him (well his gf, but still) right in the back. the the traitor who he loves.

now obviously Jo doesn’t have access to Bellamy’s in depth memories the way she does Clarke’s. but she did tell him she knew a lot about him now, just based on being in Clarke’s head, and I think she would definitely know enough to be able to simply antagonize him. but that’s not what’s she’s trying to do, she wants to manipulate him. and hell, there could have been PLENTY of other things she could have brough up specifically for the purpose of manipulating him. plenty of other ways she could have made him emotional and torn his heart strings...

Monty and Harper: is this really what they would want? for you to start ANOTHER war?? is this really doing better??? is this the life they would have wanted for their son?!?

Gina: do you really want to be responsible for the death of another person you love? you want to be responsible for another woman’s painful death?? because if she doesn’t submit to Jo, Clarke’s death will be painful.

Madi: do you really want Madi to have to watch her mother die a prisoner (yes Clarke is more like a metaphorical prisoner, but she’s still a prisoner in her own body) just like you did.

Ech0: don’t you want an opportunity to just settle down with the woman you love? get married, have kids, build a life together. isn’t that what you’ve been fighting for?? aren’t you tired of fighting?!?

but she doesn’t. She clearly sees Clarke as at least one Bellamy’s significant Achilles heels, and she is basing that on information she has taken solely from Clarke. and there is plenty of other evidence that Josephine knows and understands the importance of their relationship: she literally told her father that if Bellamy found out Clarke was dead, he would tear sanctum down and burn it to the ground. she even knew that the sure fire way to get Clarke to give up was to tell her that Bellamy already gave up on her. she knew that Bellamy giving up on her would make Clarke give up on herself. (i would argue that that is one pretty straight up example that, somewhere in her subconscious, Clarke fucking knows how she feels about Bellamy.)

Josephine really isn’t just an outsider looking in, she is an insider watching past actions and events specifically from Clarke’s perspective. she has special access to specific information that paints past events in a certain light. and because of that, i don’t really think you can make the inference that she would, all by herself, be able to get to the point of knowing that the best way to manipulate Bellamy was to use Clarke. and also, Jo is far more calculated than that. no matter how desperate she’s getting to get rid of Clarke, she’s not going to just, like, try throwing everything at the wall and hope something sticks; she doesn’t have time for that. i would even argue that because she’s getting more desperate to get rid of Clarke, Jo is going to try her goddamnedest to find whatever will work best and go with it real hard. she has more and more incentive to get rid of Clarke and, therefore, more and more incentive to figure out a way to manipulate Bellamy into helping her.

i do think it’s a valid argument that Jo is able to get way more information about Clarke’s feelings (as opposed to Bellamy’s) from Clarke’s subconscious and memories, that is relatively obvious. and i also think that Clarke is waaayyy more aware of her feelings for Bellamy than he is of his feelings for her (lord, his excuse to Ech0 about why he was worrying about Clarke while she was dancing with Mr. Hot Doctor Prime was laced with so much denial it was more potent than a pot brownie), OR that she is of his feelings for her for that matter, at this current juncture. but there also has to be something that told Jo that Clarke is just as important to Bellamy as she is to him. so unless Jo got herself some sick shipper goggles, i would argue that implies that somewhere in her subconscious Clarke knows that she and Bellamy’s relationship isn’t an ordinary one. and not just because of the circumstances under which they met, or everything they have been through together either, but because of the feelings they have for each other. not matter how smart, or observant, or sociopathic Jo is, there are things she just couldn’t have pulled out of thin air and come up with all by herself. they didn’t come from nowhere, they came from Clarke.

so, in conclusion…i would say that Clarke been knew.

The Song of Achilles/Metalocalypse AU

ahh !! I commissioned a friend of mine (who is an incredible artist and specializes in custom/DnD art!! If you’re interested in her work her etsy is MadisonNicoleArt) and she helped me finally create an AU I’ve been obsessed with for a while!

Ok this is going to be pretty long, so bear with me !!

If you’re not familiar with The Song of Achilles it’s basically a retelling of The Iliad by Homer, but from the perspective of Patroclus, the right-hand man of Achilles. It’s a beautiful, magical tale and if you’re familiar with The Iliad the ending is (spoiler)  gut-wrenching and heartbreaking. You spend the whole story knowing what’s coming, and you almost get lost in the enchanting beauty of Achilles’ and Patroclus’ relationship with each other. 

Now when I first got into the Mtl fandom I was surprised there weren’t any Iliad AUs (BUT CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG AND SEND THAT SHIT MY WAY), because Achilles was a beautiful, golden demi-God (sKWIsGAar in a nutshell LOL) and Patroclus his stong, toned, gorgeous (im extrapolating here but...) right-hand-man/partner/lover/soulmate/other half who, though never prophesied by the Gods for greatness, had his own strengths and made his own name for himself following his heart (Achilles ;))

Here are just some ideas I’ve had about this:

Skwisgaar

- Serveta being a promiscuous Queen who has a one night-stand with a lower level God that left immediately. The God’s seed was so strong that after birthing Skwisgaar his mother became incapable of having any more children and she resents him for this. 

- However, Skwisgaar was prophesied by the Gods to become the greatest/quickest warrier of his time with potential to become one of the Gods. His step-father (gentle Tyr) married Serveta and he loves her dearly, though she constantly cheats on him and neglects her only son. 

- Tyr does his best to make it up to Skwisgaar, but obvious damage has been done.

- Skwisgaar’s real father is never revealed and it’s quite popular in town to make theories about which gorgeous God Skwisgaar is the bastard of. (Adonis is a popular choice)

Toki

- Toki being the only son of the cruel King Aslaug, a malevolent leader of a deteriorating village. Toki is a small/weak boy for his age and is constantly beaten, belittled, and humiliated by his father, and therefore has no respect from the village people despite being the rightful heir. 

- He ends up accidentally killing a young bully his age (son of a noble man) in blind rage because he has certain freak episodes (episodes that likely led to his parents fearing/hating him??). (This is almost exactly what happened to Patroclus in TSOA) 

- He’ s exiled from his home, loses his family name, and is sent to be a ward of King Tyr and lives with various other abandoned orphans/exiled princes in Skwisgaar’s father’s rich, plentiful kingdom. 

NOW the fantastic slow-burn begins. Because Toki can’t seem to fit in with the other boys and there are constant rumors about how he beat a kid to death for such petty reasons and the rest of the kids are scared of him and keep their distance. 

aLL BUT SKWISGAAR! (and fuck i keep almost writing Achilles)

Who finds the new foreign boy utterly fascinating and is inexplicably drawn to him. 

Skwisgaar is obviously popular with the fellow boys for he is a tall, strong child destined for greatness, and he basks in this fact. 

Now I see Skwisgaar skipping training/class to wander off and play with a golden lyre in some hidden spot in the nearby woods.

The same spot Toki escapes to to avoid the blatant stares and loneliness. He’s shocked for a moment to see the golden prince lounging serenely on his favorite spot surrounded by flowers. But he’s stopped in his tracks after hearing Skwisgaar’s masterful Lyre playing and is absorbed in the music. He remember how, during his cold lonely years back home, an old wooden lyre was his favorite escape. 

Skwisgaar spots him and is not surprised to see how this young boy is amazed by his playing because everyone is. He’s a Lyre God. But he is surprised when the young boy timidly asks, 

“Cans I tries it?”

No one has ever had the audacity to interrupt him mid-play or the confidence to play anything that could match him. However, he’s amused and has been watching this new kid for a while, so he beckons him over and lets him play a song. 

NOW THIS IS THE MOMENT! The moment Skwisgaar is sHOOK by how Toki’s fingers glide across the instrument and the gorgeous sounds he makes. It’s not exactly like Skwisgaar’s, but it’s something entirely his own. Something gut-wrenching and heartbreaking. And Skwisgaar feels something he has never felt before for any music other than his own. 

And they end up sneaking off often and spending their free time like this, playing Lyre together and barely speaking. Eventually Skwisgaar tells his step-father he has chosen Toki to be his partner/right-hand-man (bc they did that in Greece, forgot what it was called??) and Toki is shocked and happy and can’t believe for once in his life he can be near the first person that’s ever made him so happy in his life. 

Then obviously the growing up together thing !!!

- Toki becomes stronger and truly grows into himself. He’ll never have Skwisgaar’s natural swiftness of foot or affinity for combat, but he’ll be damned if he doesn’t try. 

- Skwisgaar is originally jealous of/shocked/impressed/aroused by how muscular/toned Toki grows up to become, but he constantly lords his impressive height over Toki

There’s so much more I feel is too much to add!!!

And the boys have so many obstacles in the way of their relationship, society/expectations/responsibilities/themselves. And it’s hard and painful but so worth it as long as they have each other.

Season 6 Episode 10: Caged Heat

I’m sick. Have been for the last couple of days but now I’m pretty sure my cold has turned into bronchitis and I’m coughing up from deep within my chest and it’s just uncomfortable. So what is one to do when one has taken the day off? Clearly watch SPN. 

Also. Here’s a thought. If SPN were set in His Dark Material universe, everyone would have caught on REAL FAST that Sam didn’t have a soul. Because his daemon wouldn’t be there. Would have saved everyone a lot of trouble in trying to figure out what was wrong with him. 

- Wow! Crowley is beating up on Crowley. “Sorry, but your exceptional good looks aren’t going to buy you any mercy.” LOL! Oooh, does Crowley have the shapeshifter Alpha on his hands? And he found something that can hurt it! Ooops! It just spit blood all over Crowley. Well then. Crowley’s threats did not loosen his lips so now Alpha shifter has been decapitated. Hehehehehe. “Guess I kind of lost my head.”

- Ok, so! Meg and her croonies are running from Crowley cause he’s got a hit on all the Lucifer loyalists, and she wants to kill Crowley before he kills her... So that she can become Queen of Hell? I mean, if she were Queen she would have the power to let Lucifer out of his cage, maybe? Sam is the man with a plan. “You wanna work with a demon again?” “We’re working with demons now. I’m doing this cause I wanna stop.” “She killed Ellen and Jo.” “I know. But we can’t look at this emotionally. We need her.” “The hell we do. That little bitch is gonna screw us over so fast--” “Of course. Which is why we’ll screw her first. Meg and her little posse are dead the second we’re done with them.” “Yeah, if they don’t kill us.” “Oh, they won’t. Cause we’re bringing insurance.”

- Is Sam seriously trying to lure Cass by telling him the plot of Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark? It’ll likely work. I doubt Cass knows anything about pop culture. LOL! He showed up. “I can’t believe you fell for that. That was the plot for Raiders, idiot.”

- I would’t believe Crowley for a second that he’ll bring Mary back. He’s a demon. He’s now THE demon. He’s a lying liar who’s really good at lying. Dean’s right. “I’m saying stop trying. It’s going to go nowhere good. Samuel, I know we’ve had our differences, but I’m your grandson. And I’m telling you that this is wrong for so many reasons.” “You hypocrite.” “I’m asking you to learn from our mistakes. Doing this, this is how the bad guy gets us every time. It’s our Achilles heel. Apparently, it runs in the family.”

- WHAT IS CASS WATCHING?? “It’s very complex. If the pizza man truly loves this babysitter... why does he keep slapping her rear?” IS HE WATCHING PORN?? “You watching porn? Why?” “It was there.” HAHAHAHA!!!!!! “Oh, now he’s got a boner.” Cass looks SO CONFUSED over the fact he has a boner! “This is what you boys do all day? Watching pornos with angels?” “We’re not supposed to talk about it.” OMG!!! I LOVE THIS SHOW!

- RoboSam is just badass. Got Meg to give him their demon killing knife and then killed one of the demons cause he “looked more interested in killing us than the job” and then was all “You took it from us. I’m taking it back. We leave in one hour.” It’s like, you don’t mess with RoboSam because he will fuck you up. 

- Whaaaaaat?? Cass doesn’t think getting Sam’s soul is wise. Pray, tell us why. Aha! Cass is bringing up the point I have been making since the start of season 6. Sam’s soul has been trapped in the cage with Lucifer and Michael for over a year and they have nothing else to do but take their frustrations out on him. And they would because he’s the sole reason they’re both in there to begin with. “If we try to force that mutilated thing down Sam’s gullet... we have no idea what will happen. It could be catastrophic.” “You mean he dies.” “I mean he doesn’t. Paralysis, insanity, psychic pain so profound that he’s locked inside himself for the rest of his life.” “But you’re saying you don’t know anything for sure? I mean, he could be fine?” “He could be, yes.” “Okay, then.” “But I sincerely doubt it.” “Well, if he’s not fine, then you fix him.” (like it’s that easy; it’s one thing fixing physical ills, I don’t think anyone can fix a broken soul). And Sam was listening to all of that. He doesn’t look very happy about it. Man, RoboSam can sneak! 

But like, what else is Dean supposed to do? He wants his little brother back. He wants to save his little brother. At this point, even though Sam is physically there, he’s still trapped in Hell. And it’s been over a year. Dean won’t stand for that. He won’t let Sam just... be tortured in Hell by Michael and Lucifer forever. He can’t. Like, he physically and mentally can’t let that go on.

- I bet Crowley is letting them enter because they’re bringing Meg and her posse with them and he’s going to kill them all (Meg and her posse). It’s Mrs. O’Leary!!! Hmmm... Cass and Meg are making out. Why? Sam and Dean looks very confused about it, too. “I learned that from the pizza man.” LOOOOOOOL!!!!

- “Sam!” “Yeah?” “I’m standing in pee!” “Consider yourself lucky.” “Yikes. That sucks.” LOL!

- What is RoboSam doing to his arm? What did he stash inside of him? Fuck, he is so badass. He feels pain but it’s sort of like whatever. HOLY FUCK! HE USED HIS BLOOD TO DRAW A DEVIL’S TRAP??? How did he reach the ceiling? He’s tall, but not that tall. I guess maybe there was a chair in there? 

- I can’t believe they pulled the fire alarm. That’s so grade school, LOL! 

- WOAH! Cass just showed up with the bones and torched them after Crowley, again, said he can’t bring Sam’s soul back. Though, I did enjoy the discussion of why would Sam want it back when it’s been tortured for over a year by Satan since that’s his only source of entertainment. 

- Sam’s right. “When angels and demons agree on something, call me nuts. I pay attention.”

Sam walked out! Now what??? Dum dum dum!!!!!
