(prev anon here. First of all, thank you very much for their sources! It definitely made a bit more at peace. Second, I am very sorry if this goes very long, or if it makes you uncomfortable (feel free to ignore this if it does, I am just kind of venting))

Okay so basically. I finished yoi like a couple of weeks ago and I was so giddy with happiness! (Though there were a few things I could have wished went differently, overall it was such a pleasant, feel good show) HOWEVER I made the mistake of searching for meta on tumblr because I wanted to see what other interpretations were. Because I came across a lot (and I mean A Lot) of posts form when the show aired (2016-18) about people either being disappointed by it being a queerbait/ multiple posts saying it was y//a/o/i fetishizing everything/about how it was just a generally shitty/mediocre show and that it's fandom was delusional or whatever and like. On one hand I do understand that the rep isn't perfect, and that there were various fandom drama that resulted in the wank (namely the crunchyroll award thingy, kubo's confusing interviews(?)) But also it's just. I was obviously not there so I still do not know the full context and it was all OVER years ago and presently, the show is mostly remembered by people with love and nostalgia. But now, I guess I just read too many negative comments about it and I just. Am very upset since I feel like I've lost the happiness the show gave me when I first watched it? I just don't know how to or what to do to like. Not take them seriously?? Obviously people have different opinions, they HAD different opinions but it also feels very draining to read something very, very negative about something you are emotionally connected to. On my first watch, I was almost 100% sure victuuri were canon? (Especially with Yuuri saying he's going to show his love to the world multiple times, and just. The whole show with every episode) and on one hand I get that people wished they could get explicit confirmation, an on screen kiss without it being hidden and everything but I just. I feel so confused and low-key stressed about this, especially since I KNOW all of this discourse is in the past and the fandom doesn't really have any of it now?? And it's been seven years since everything happened and it's over!! But. I just. I saw you've been here right form the start and I really wanted to know if you really had any advice (in lack of a better word) on how to just get over all of this? (Again: please ignore this ask if this is kind of out of nowhere because I am *this* close to chickening out and not sending it fjdgd. But I think I really need to talk about this and put it down because it's bothering me too much:( )

OKAY this is super long. tl;dr corporations and some fans are evil and homophobic, Kubo and Sayo are queens, and YOI is and always will be 100% canon gay.

First and foremost the main reason that the show is remembered largely fondly now and that all those meta about it being queerbait and all are ignored now is because 90% of them were bad faith criticism. There were a fair amount of people who REALLY hated this show, and most of their reasons were pretty petty (seriously I remember them calling themselves the YOI salt squad? lmao)! And they wrote really disingenuous meta that has not stood the test of time because of that. So I know it may be hard and some of their posts might get to you, but do your best to ignore them. They're not done in good faith. They're not done because these people legitimately care about representation. Most of them were done because a show they didn't like was popular and was being heralded as very special. There was actually even a big anti-Kubo movement on 2chan Japan that aimed to basically destroy the popularity of her work and of YOI by doctoring fake tweets, making accusations of plagiarism, etc. Mind, this was not just because of YOI. Before YOI, Kubo did a popular radio show with her best friend, who is one of the most famous trans women in Japan, Mineko Nomachi. She also occasionally discussed lgbtq+ rights in the workplace. You can imagine this annoyed the very conservative users of 2chan.

Secondly, one thing that caused issues in the fandom was mistranslations. There were two translators famous for taking interviews with the creators and basically 'no homo-ing' them. If you ever see translations floating around from Tora on Ice or K@rice, please just ignore them. Even the translations they did that weren't inaccurate, it's not worth digging through the mistranslations to find them. The problem with this ended up being that their mistranslations upset A LOT of people. People ended up really heartbroken over them because YOI and Victuuri meant a lot to them, and though it's mostly ebbed by now, there's still some damage caused by their homophobia.

Just to give perspective, K@rice said that if Victuuri were ever 'confirmed canon' (because according to her, despite making out and getting engaged they weren't canon), she would sell her blu-rays and leave the fandom. Well, I don't know if she sold her blu-rays, but when Otsuka said that quote I linked in the previous ask, where he used the indisputably romantic word 'renai', she did make a post about how 'disappointed' she was and never talked about YOI again. Both of them had a history of doing this in canonically lgbtq+ fandoms before, and have continued to do it in other fandoms since. But yeah, they caused a lot of damage.

Next up, CENSORSHIP.

When Sayo Yamamoto pitched YOI, she couldn't find a studio to take the project on. Although she was considered somewhat of an auteur, neither of the anime she'd made before were hits, and she was trying to sell a show that no one thought that would be popular. Studios that were interested in the project suggested she make it about teenagers in a high school club, which she refused to do. She brought Kubo on to help, and eventually they were able to get Mappa to take the project. At the time Mappa was considered an experimental studio that took on really creative, inventive projects that other studios might consider too risky. Otsuka (Mappa's second in command) at the time thought the show could be a hit, but probably not many other people felt the same. Indeed, there was almost zero buzz for the show before it aired in Japan. They always do big polls for most anticipated anime of the season, and YOI didn't even rank in fall 2016.

So Sayo and Kubo wanted it to be a romance, but Avex (the parent company above Mappa) didn't want this. She had to push for it, and she said that 'all parties' tried to stop her from putting the kiss in, but she insisted. To note, as a woman in the anime industry without any popular shows under her belt, this is hugely badass of her. She and Kubo both could have lost their jobs and lost control of the show they wanted to make so easily. She would NOT compromise. It was amazing of her.

YOI comes out and ends up being like... the biggest hit ever in both Japan and internationally, but while Mappa is pretty happy to embrace the gay (which you see with all the merchandise they directly produce; it's very overtly romantic), Avex gets cold feet (I'm assuming BECAUSE it's so popular). They want this to be a super marketable franchise, but because they are stupid they don't grasp that the romance is part of what makes it that. They stop doing a bunch of magazine spreads of just Victor and Yuuri looking romantic, and start shoving Yurio in there as an awkward third wheel. They try to market the series as a cast of bishounen where you 'pick your fave boy' instead of focusing on what fans are wanting. It's all very messy.

And then, this might not be Avex's fault, but magazine publishers get in on the censorship. In order for YOI art to be accepted in these magazines, they force Mappa artists to remove the rings from Victor and Yuuri's fingers. Although this at first is excused by fans because 'well the rings are spoilers', by a few months post series, fans begin to outcry, and even Japanese fans are growing very angry. One Mappa artist comes forward after the spread she drew is criticized for lack of rings, and says 'she never would have left them off, and that they were there when she submitted the art.' And this is how fans find out what's happening. This happens again when YOI animation director Noriko Ito expresses surprise that the design page for the rings is not included in the YOI setting book released by a publisher, because she knows it was supposed to be in there. The publisher removed it. Later art, as in post 2018, has more often featured the rings, but there's so little of that art that it's hard to know if it would be a permanent thing if YOI ever continued. Plus, that art has been specifically for YOI collabs and merch as opposed to magazine spreads.

After that we find out that Kubo and Sayo are being censored in interviews. Please don't criticize Kubo for being 'vague.' She did the best she could in a situation where she wasn't allowed to talk super explicitly about the romance. We know for a fact that when Kubo and Sayo were interviewed, Avex SPECIFICALLY told interviewers that they were 'not allowed to be asked questions about lgbtq+ aspects of the series.' I know! It's so upsetting. We also found out that Kubo and Sayo brought character designer Tadashi Hiramatsu on the project because they did not think they were being taken seriously as a team of two women (no hate on Hiramatsu though, he's amazing and he totally loves YOI). Avex didn't believe in YOI as a romance, even after it proved so successful. It's the saddest thing on earth.

So the end conclusion is that Kubo, Sayo, and yes Mappa (though I have plenty of criticisms of them now) were pretty cool about YOI. Kubo and Sayo pushed for and wrote a gay romance into a sports anime, something that had never been done before, at constant risk of losing their job and status in the industry. They were badasses and they're both writing heroes of mine because of that, and it actually makes me love YOI more knowing how much they cared and how much they were willing to risk to tell the story they wanted to tell, that of a romance between Victor and Yuuri. And it is a romance, indisputably so, and anyone who disagrees is frankly giving them a slap in the face.

I was wondering if you knew what happened to the riren artist END/Azuma Chiaki/id=29134 on baka updates manga/twitter user @0i0i0i0i0i0i0? They seem to have deleted their pixiv AND twitter. Their artwork was amazing and their last tweet was a black box with a lot of japanese text and it was pretty eerie since i didnt understand it ^^;

I think the last time I checked on it was like 2018-ish and it was a pretty huge fiasco (well...as huge as cross fandom disasters go haha), but I’ll try to explain it to the best of my ability and give a (pretty bad) tl;dr:

In the beginning, there was this recurring issue--someone kept hurling insults and ridiculing rivaere and victuuri shippers. Their name was Saimau--a rabid eruri, past ereri, fujoshi. They misused pixiv’s tag editing feature to delete kind tags left by fans of rivaere, uke-levi, and levihan artwork.

(Some things you should know! ereri != riren/rivaere in the Japanese fandom AT ALL, they’re treated as pretty much different, “competing” ships)

Anyways, Saimau targeted Chiaki (a rivaere and victuuri artist--so it doesn’t even make sense why she would hate her own ships lol) and Mitsuhashi (another rivaere artist) of this by manipulating screenshots (inspect element-ing sites) and harassed, slandered, and doxxed them through anonymous methods. They went on to encourage other users in Japanese 5chan to do the same.

So that “eerie” last tweet was her getting an attorney and getting the cops involved. She never posted again and deleted everything years later I believe--which I don’t really know why she did.

Then, Saimau went on as an imposter-ereri-fan of a one hour ereri drawing account. She slightly edited artworks from other fandoms to fake-draw Eren and Levi and continue to trespass other tags. This was an attempt to disparage ereri shippers’ image again.

They made more accounts to slander rivaere artists. Turns out, when you really hate rivaere, you feel compelled to accuse them of voter manipulation of official character popularity contests. She used other accounts to mock rivaere shippers calling them delusional, exposed the identity/pseudonym of a manga artist (a rivaere artist who quit after being sued for her dj Sex Pistols), doesn’t keep her hate tweets to herself and continues to go under a fake pro-rivaere account on twitter (@misat1192). It is rumored, that to this day, she is still trying to contact the official Japanese SNK twitter accounts under her own delusional accusations (jk, but fr).

Disclaimer: these actions do not reflect the integrity of all Japanese eruri fans! Fans usually keep to themselves (not like the western AOT fandom’s constant disrespect, but of course I guess there are more children here anyways) and I don’t think Saimau called any rivaere shipper a pedophile. Only a d-bag that tried to accuse others of her d-baggery.

Moral of the story:

1. Japanese otakus are scary.

2. Trust scrolling video proof instead of screenshots.

3. Honestly, how hard is it to just let people ~vibe~. As long as they’re not doing any harm, you’re just exposing your own jealousy and insecurity.

Can- can I just talk about the Victuuri relationship? Pretty please?

I just…. I’ve never seen a healthy relationship that starts from idolization and a need to get out that has ended in a satisfying way.

Let me elaborate:

We all know that Yuri idolized Victor. It’s why he was so nervous in the beginning and why it took time for them to build on their relationship, he saw Victor as a god.

Victor? He was depressed. He loved the ice so much but he longer found excitement in competitions. He didn’t have any worthy opponents that had a chance of beating him (sorry Chris).

I believe Victor “fell in love” at the banquet. He was attracted to Yuri but, even though he lost, he also saw potential in him. That night was probably the most exciting night for him in a long time. I think he felt genuine affection for Yuri but also saw a way to get out of his predicament.

Then, of course, Yuri didn’t show up the following season (a year had passed before the present timeline). He was most likely annoyed that someone who had gave him excitement didn’t show up. Did he think Yuri had a chance of beating him at first? Probably not. Did he see potential or at least someone he could have fun with during the season? Hell yes!

And then when he saw the video of Yuri skating Stay Close To Me, something that awarded him a gold medal. That’s all he needed. He saw how Yuri not only skated it perfectly but I bet he thought Yuri skated it better. Let’s not forget that emotion is a huge part of skating. If you don’t skate with the passion your supposed to hold for whatever theme you have, your performance can almost seem futile. Victor obviously won because he perfected it but if it was based on how he presented it alone, he would’ve lost. He saw someone worthy of skating an gold medal piece while also having the heart to do it. That’s talent.

Anyways, because of this, their relationship doesn’t hold well in the beginning. He’s passive aggressive towards Yuri because he doesn’t see his own talent and Yuri is just going along for the ride because holy shit it’s Victor fucking Nikiforov.

As they get to know each other and Yuri opens up more (plus Victor getting info on Yuri from the others) Victor starts to see Yuri as an actual person and not someone he can use to project himself onto and then later skate against. And Yuri starts to see him as an actual person too.

I saw on another post talking about how we didn’t see them during the summer and how the end credits of every episode suggest they got to know each other better as both in the credits and in the show they (Yuri) are able to touch each other more. I 100% believe this.

I also believe they might’ve had an argument or two on this topic. It’s not easy to switch from inadvertently seeing someone as anything but a person to an actual person with emotions and feelings. I believe Victor would’ve tried to back away from this subject but Yuri wouldn’t let him. It wasn’t big arguments like in episode 7. It was probably little quarrels that annoyed them both but after having a long conversation they finally started to become more comfortable with each other.

Yuri started letting go of the notion that Victor was a god like creature and Victor saw him as something other than a pawn. Yuri stopped getting as embarrassed with Victor touching him and Victor stopped trying to seduce him as much just so he could see the man from the banquet.

This most definitely leads the way towards a healthier relationship but episode 7 was inevitable. Yuri’s anxiety was at an all time high when he comes out on top. The fact that he needs to stay on top and not mess up is getting to him. As a person with anxiety, it’s pure hell. The thoughts of failing won’t get out of his head and even as he turns off all the monitors he can still hear everything.

Victor takes him away from prying eyes and has no idea what to do. Despite an obvious change that would’ve had to include some emotions from both occurring over the summer, he still has no idea how to help someone in distress.

Then he makes his first mistake. Yuri is visibly shaken by someone’s scores (can’t remember who) and Victor, who is at his wits end, yells at him to stop listening and puts his hands over Yuri’s ears. This tells Yuri how nervous Victor is too and despite knowing that Victor wouldn’t leave him now it shows to him that Victor doesn’t have faith in him (even if he does).

Victor tried to shatter Yuri’s heart. He must’ve expected Yuri to maybe sign heavily but tell him that he’ll do everything in his power to win (probably something that’s happened with him and Yakov). Instead he see’s the consequences of his carelessness. Yuri rightfully lashes out at him and even through all that Victor stills says “should I kiss you?”. Idk what Yuri was thinking but if I were him I would be extremely offended that Victor would try and use me like some doll he can play with and can assume that physical affection and love can fix everything, which was probably what Yuri was thinking.

There’s something off about Yuri and Victor when they emerge but Yuri is surprisingly better now. Cathartic crying can do wonders, kids. There’s also my favorite part of the entire show (couldn’t find a gif):

*head jab* “Hey, fuck you.”

*more head jabs* “Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you. I know you don’t like this you unempathetic dicknip.”

*head pat* “You’re forgiven.”

We all know what happens next: Yuri ends his love story with Victor’s signature move and Victor kisses him out of joy and the need to one up him (with love, of course).

I’m gonna get a little sloppy here with the timeline because I have the memory of a female protagonist that needs to go back to work to get something only to accidentally bump into the jerk CEO of which she will develop a toxic relationship for fan service, so forgive me.

Gonna skip ahead to the scene where Yuri tells Victor that he’s leaving skating, and basically Victor too. (At this moment I realized I’ve been spelling Viktor with a c and not a k which is really fucking with my brain but it’s too late to go back). Victor starts crying and realizes just how Yuri felt when he was rejecting him.

I believe Yuri found some light in the situation because of that fact, which Victor was not having. They’ve been closer than ever now. They’ve kissed, they’ve also announced they they’re getting married, so what the hell?!

Yuri, as we know, feels he’s keeping Victor from the ice. Victor, while he misses the ice and wouldn’t mind being competitive again, has found meaning and if he’s going to be Yuri’s coach to stay where he is than so be it.

He wanted to coach Yuri because he wanted a worthy competitor and while he still wants that, what matters most now is his relationship with Yuri. If he stops being Yuri’s coach and Yuri goes off the ice he knows it will be the end. Yuri loves the ice too and I’d bet he’d try to distance himself from Victor as to not feel regret from leaving without actually knowing that he’s doing it.

They’ve grown so much at this point. But that doesn’t mean it’s over. After all they’ve been through Yuri doesn’t realize that consequences of parting from one another. While being too dependent on your spouse isn’t good, it’s what they both need right now. They are what caused the other person to be happy again and while I hate those types of storylines this one executed it perfectly.

I find Victor’s silent plea to Yurio absolutely heartbreaking. He knows it’s bad to put pressure on people but now he’s doing that to a 15 year old boy. He’s putting his relationship and his life into this child’s hands because he knows there’s nothing else he can do.

I do think Yurio had a crush on Yuri but even if he didn’t: Yuri has taught him so much. He, although being an ass most of the time, has really come to love Yuri as family. It’s clear that Yurio was always lonely (Otabek being his first friend and all) but once he came to Japan and lived, truly lived there, he wasn’t lonely anymore.

Yurio wins, Yuri gets silver and all’s well that ends well.

I guess my point of this was to show how well the relationship in YOI was. I could’ve included some more detail on some points but I usually write stuff in one take (it’s very hard to revise without my mind shutting on itself).

I just love how an implicitly toxic relationship can come out so healthy. They don’t do any of that miscommunication bullshit and when they do it’s because the characters don’t know what to do or how to handle something. Like humans do!

They could’ve easily made this the hot famous guy thinks the kawai girl boy is just so adorable and the kawai girl boy is absolutely infatuated with the hot guy. Hijinks ensue which includes the kawai girl boy thinking the hot guy is in love with someone else. She He gets pushed into thinking that she’s he’s more independent in the end and happily ever after for the couple that will divorce in less than five years! Yay!

Seriously, I thought that was what was going to happen but YOI subverted my expectations so much. They are people that grew from their bad mindsets. And you know what? Yuri still has anxiety! Victor is still bad with handling emotions! And that’s ok! We don’t change that quickly. It takes time and hopefully another season.

I’m definitely using this show as a template for healthy relationships. It’s so hard for me to properly write them when I’ve never been in one and I’m not given the chance to see it happen in different environments (when searching it up all I get is “they trust each other. They blame each other. They’re compassionate.” Like ok but can you show me how?)

So from turtles they think that dd jewelry has to do with gg. Recently dd has been wearing the dog bone necklace even at the head and shoulders event under his shit. My question is how do the jewelry relate to gg and dd? And why doesn’t gg wear any jewelry?

Fake, fan fiction, CPN.

The bone necklace appeared last year after DD’s birthday (the first sighting was 7 November 2020), and at a time when DD seemed to be experimenting with replacements for the ox necklace (which first appeared 19 June 2019). Some of the ones we saw him in at around that time were the Gucci lion head necklace, the daisy and star necklace, and the baby bottle necklace.

The bone necklace seems to have been the chosen one. He’s worn it pretty much constantly for months and months now.

How is it connected with GG? Well, GG famously called DD “gou zai zai” (Chinese for ‘puppy’, which is a Sichuan/Chongqing term of endearment affectionately used by parents to their children) in the Untamed BTS. It became a bit of a thing. When one of the actors from Legend of Fei was doing a livestream he was asked if he would be calling DD ‘puppy’. When he said he wouldn’t they asked him why and he said, “Because I’m not Xiao Zhan.”

So to answer your question, Anon, basically it’s a chain of events. The ox necklace didn’t leave his body for over a year despite how controversial it had become for him to wear. His solo fans hated him wearing it because of the connection it had to GG. They complained about it constantly, and it caused a lot of arguments between solos and BXG. Fans were wishing that solos would stop freaking out about it because it obviously held a lot of significance for him.

Then his birthday comes along and suddenly he has all these new necklaces fans assume GG gave him (Some are connected with brands GG was associated with, others are associated with GG thematically. There was also a fake rumour that said GG had gotten DD 23 gifts for his 23rd birthday.).

Among the new necklaces was the Gucci lion head, which is also significant (he wore it at his motorcycle race last year and was supposedly seen kissing it before the start of the race).

Anyway, the bone necklace has replaced the ox head. We see him in it constantly and some fans associate it even more with GG because of the puppy reference. However, it doesn’t seem to cause as much backlash as the ox one did, so it seems to have mostly resolved the controversy.

GG and Jewelry

GG definitely does wear jewelry, the most notable being a ring that he is rumored to wear constantly off-camera, and then wear on a chain around his neck whenever he’s in the public eye. This was more or less confirmed to some degree around the time of his Beijing snacks video, where the shape of a ring can be seen under his shirt when he pats his chest.

1. Who has the cutest tickle laugh?

I'm gonna have to say Yuuri. Victor's is very loud and melodic almost, but Yuuri's is full of snorts and these hiccupy giggles that the other is in love with.

2. What are their tickle spots?

So Yuuri's is definitely his stomach because I say so~ Victor's neck is actually hella sensitive, but he wasn't really aware until he met Yuuri. He gets super flustered whenever he's tickled there.

3. Who is ticklish in unusual places, and where would that be?

Victor has this sweet spot on his ankles, and he'll squirm and kick a lot when tickled there.

4. Who gets cheer-up tickles?

Oh Yuuri, for sure. He tends to get down on himself if he makes mistakes on performances, but Victor is always there to make him feel better and "put a smile back on that gloomy face!"

5. Do either of them try to hide their ticklishness?

Victor doesn't really hide it, he's pretty open about the fact, but Yuuri does, and gets super embarrassed if anyone points it out.

6. Who takes advantage of the other one getting their arms stuck while taking off their shirt?

VICTOR man is a tickle monster, and will gladly jump upon any oppurtunity to tease his cute boyfriend. It's made all the better because Yuuri can't focus on getting unstuck while being tickled, and just collapses into a giggly pile in the other's arms, unable to defend himself.

7. How did they discover each other's ticklishness?

Victor discovered it when Minako snuck up behind Yuuri during practice and stuck her hands under his arms to hear his startled yelp. Yuuri discovered it when the two were cuddling in bed one day, and Victor kept pulling away and giggling whenever he tried to kiss his neck.

8. Who can't take tickle bites/raspberries?

Neither, omg. Victor is more susceptible to tickle bites, but he has a love/hate relationship with them because they also feel nice. Raspberries literally anywhere on Yuuri (but especially his stomach) will kill him, instant KO.

9. Who has to be tickle-forced out of bed in the morning?

Since Victor wakes up earlier, and Yuuri is bad at getting up in the morning for practice, he'll give the other a five minute warning, and if he isn't up by then Victor will pounce and wreck the other with tickles and kisses until he's up.

10. Who initiates tickle fights?

100% Victor. He can't help provoking the other, and seeing as he doesn't really mind getting tickled himself, it's a win/win situation. Yuuri does on occasion, when he gets in one of his more playful/bratty moods, but he's never won one to this day.

11. Who gives up in tickle fights?

Yuuri. He's too ticklish for his own good.

12. Who is in danger of getting hurt when attacking the other?

Yuuri, omfg. Victor is a kicker, and will accidentally nail you in the face if you're not too careful. Yuuri tends to curl up in a ball and become useless when tickled, so it's pretty safe.

13. Who always provokes the other into tickling them and how?

Victor does. Though he possesses the ability to ask for tickles, unlike his boyfriend, he considers this to be the more fun way. Flustering Yuuri with a chance of revenge tickles on the other side? Sign him the hell up.

Day 15: Face

A short fic for day fifteen of the YOI 20+ Club’s Daily Art Challenge!

Note: No notes this time. Just Victuuri.

When he arrives in Hasetsu, Victor’s face is an impenetrable mask.

Yuuri doesn’t realize, at first, that the face he’s looking at isn’t real. He only sees the razor-sharp edge to that wide grin when Victor prods at his insecurities, and then the cloying intimacy of his smile as he leans in too close to Yuuri’s face, murmuring something about building trust in their relationship.

He feels hunted.

He doesn’t know when the mask begins to fall. Perhaps it’s the day he and Yuri come back from the waterfall, damp-haired and shivering in the crisp spring air, and Victor puts a worried hand to his forehead before shoving them both towards the hot spring to warm up.

Maybe it’s a few days later when Yuuri, sore after an especially brutal fall, can’t raise his arms to properly wash his hair before getting into the springs and Victor wordlessly takes the shampoo and does it for him.

Yuuri knows for sure the mask has slipped when Victor watches him run through choreography before the Onsen on Ice event. Victor’s gaze is focused, intense, and several times Yuuri sees him open his mouth as if to say something before Yurio, or Takeshi, or Yuko, or one of the triplets, barges into the locker room and aborts his attempt to speak.

Yuuri turns his music down just in case Victor does manage to get the words out. There, in the silence of the locker room, Yuuri feels Victor’s eyes on him and realizes that Victor’s gaze no longer makes him feel like prey. Rather, he feels sheltered. Embraced.

(In a few minutes, when he comes off the ice and sees the expression on Victor’s face, he will add desired to that list).

He likes the feeling.

There’s no pretense later, through endless days of sleepy morning cuddles and Victor’s harsh critiques of his jump technique, of painful bruises and hugs so tight it’s hard to breathe.

Yuuri wonders sometimes whether Victor’s ever had a best friend before, and aches in secondhand loneliness.

By the time they’re at the Cup of China and Victor is accosted by seemingly every journalist and every skater he’s ever known, wanting to know when are you going to ditch poor Yuuri, when are you coming back, Yuuri hasn’t seen the mask in so long that it triggers a seething rage when he sees it creep, uninvited, back onto Victor’s face.

Kami-sama, he’d forgotten how it felt to look at Victor and see an untouchable god. Someone who could hurt him with a single glance.

It stays on until Yuuri breaks down the next day, in the parking garage in the basement of the arena, when it promptly shatters into a million pieces and is left unwanted on the cement floor.

Despite the circumstances, Yuuri revels in the way his Victor came rushing back to him when he finally understood what Yuuri needed.

Yuuri does a quad flip. He falls. Victor kisses him anyway.

The mask comes back only once, after that. This time it’s Yuuri’s fault. He’s lost face, touching down on the ice during an ambitious short program and then crying on international television. Victor’s coaching suddenly looks suspect. He tries to release him (’You said it was only until the Grand Prix final!’), which Victor utterly rejects.

He’s so beautiful when he cries, Yuuri almost forgets that he’s looking at a broken soul rather than a masterful piece of art. He catches himself too late, after he’s already gazed in awe for too long at Victor’s unabashed tears.

They’re at an impasse. Yuuri hates it.

It’s not until he’s already on the ice, skating the program he made with this impossible, perfect, ridiculous man, that he finally understands that Victor’s afraid Yuuri will leave him. That Yuuri doesn’t need him any more.

Dear Lord, he prays, hoping Victor can hear, Don’t you understand? I want to keep skating with you forever. Is this the skate of someone who doesn’t need you, Victor? Look at me, everything I am is shaped by you.

There’s an interminable time between him breaking Victor’s world record and the moment when the unmasked Victor finally comes back to him.

“Stay with me for one more year!” Yuuri cries when he comes off the ice after the medal ceremony, knocking Victor over and grabbing hold of his shoulders as they both drop to the floor.

The mask vaporizes. It’s just Vitya again, looking up at Yuuri like he’s something magnificent. Something worth celebrating.

“Keep going,“ Victor says, gently placing the silver medal over Yuuri’s neck. I need to take care of you for longer, is what Victor doesn’t say.

Yuuri hears him anyway. He nods, tears gathering in his eyes. And the silly, soft, funny man that barged into his parents’ house, who knocked himself off his own pedestal and let Yuuri love him, smiles so excitedly, so hopefully, that Yuuri can’t do anything but gather him into a hug and hold on for dear life.

Just got curious Misha's tweet abt spn cuz I am following him (with bells and all) and yet I didn't see any tweet. And then of course I had to read the replies and got .. uh triggered? Idk the milder word for it. But anxiety is on the roof and I am agitated.

I'm an anime fan, bl fan, novel fan, yada yada. I mean people would think Im fujoshi (i said people cuz im closeted bi cisgirl in a homophobic country so never opened up abt it) but honestly my range is wider than just bl. But I do love bl stories because i tend to relate with them more. So as you can imagine, im always quesy with the fujoshi things. Less abt them, more with the image portrayed by non fujoshi? Like they're weird people fetish-ing queer people, or just straight girls watching two hot guys fucking (similar to straght guys to lesbian porn i guess). The one that confound me the most would be the fujoshi who agreed with the definition and im confused.

I mostly thought they basically is gay shippers just different cultures you know? My fellow bl lovers love the story, the love, the struggle, the happiness between the two characters. And it just rankles me when people simplify it to watching hot dudes fuck. Like yeah we're horny bitches but like our genitals isnt the all of us you know??

Im veering of to bl lands instead of slash (spn) shippers this post start with but there is a connection.

Because whether it is bl, novel, anime, tv shows, movies,, there is always always "y'all just crazy they never said to be queer. So what if they say ily? Doesnt mean its gay. Y'all just delusional. Stop making everything gay. They are bffs. I say ily to my brother does that make me incest? I don't think so"

And I fucking hate those words. With all my being.

Maybe you think those words only thrown to non canon shipper. But no, canon too. And it hurts me that the bl fans also think this. I just don't understand. Why does it need for these chara to fuck or say im queer to be canon gay couple??

Yuri on ice for example. Some fans be like they are not canon (and they are victuuri shippers which is mindboggling), and it hurts... Because to me, they are basically saying my way of loving is invalid you know? Gestures, love soft actions...

There are needs for queer visibility in media and i agree. But this is a different problem.

How ily or love actions toward same gender must be straght until one of both chara come out is just painful you know??

Argh im just too upset now. Can't articulate my mind abt this and it is driving me crazy.

what is your absolute favorite ship?

I have a few that I think I’ll always keep especially close to my heart: MitsuTaki (Kimi no Na wa.), NaruHina (Naruto), Victuuri (Yuri!!! on Ice), and Korrasami (The Legend of Korra).

what ship do you hate most?

(censoring ship names I speak negatively about to try and keep this from appearing in their searches)

AIIurance and KIance from VLD: AL because of the canon content, KL bc of the fantis.

Mak0rra and Ma5ami from LOK bc of Mako’s canon character.

Also Naru$aku from Naruto and lchihime from Bleach because of both canon content and extremely rude shippers back in the day.

Those are some of my NOTPS that I absolutely cannot stand.

Antis ruined the fun.

Hmmm... probably UlquiHime, Reylo, GilVi (Violet Evergarden), ItaHina (Naruto) and some other Problematique Ships etc. It’s fiction. Fictional characters characters do not exist.

hmmm it’s hard to think of one that Most People seem to like bc of ship wars... KIance, JeIsa (Frozen x ROTG crossover),

what is the most underrated ship, in your opinion?

Maybe LeoJi and JJBella from Yuri On Ice, and TsuTsu from BNHA. I adore those ships but they don’t seem to get much fan content from what I recall.

Also FujiBato from Kobato; that animanga series in general is underrated, but it’s one of my favorites!

what is the most overrated ship, in your opinion?

Hmm.... maybe KIance because the fantis were awful and put the ship on too high of a pedestal with treating fanon content as canon, and then tried to force the writers to make their fanon reality, etc. Also lchihime imo bc compared to IR, lH does not work narratively as a mutually requited ship.

Masterpost for my works - which is mostly fanfiction, with one original short story that happens to be here. Since they are scattered on here and on ao3 it’s getting difficult to keep track so I thought I’d gather them all and add on as I write (　◜◡‾)

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun

warmth, ~1100 words, hananene, rated G, hurt/comfort, fluff, they are in love but they don’t really know yet, also Hanako needs to be protected

The sunset streams in through the window, paints the bathroom in watercolour golds and pinks and oranges, and it's breathtaking. It must be warm – the light tinges his hand red and nothing else, and he does not cast a shadow against the door even though he's standing right in front of it. He doesn't exist. At least not in the actual sense of the word.

You shouldn't miss something you can't even remember, but Hanako does anyway.

now sleeps the crimson petal, now the white, ~6700 words, hananene, rated T, hanahaki disease, angst with a happy ending

(If you love someone in secret, or if your love is one-sided... sometimes, they say, if your bond is strong, your lungs will sprout flowers.

It can’t be. But the the petals mock her with their beauty - she holds them between her fingers, careful, and they’re soft and fragile and she doesn’t know how something so delicate could ever cause her so much pain. She throws them away. It can’t be. It will pass.

Hanako brings flowers in his name. It’s only fair he’d bring them in Yashiro’s heart, too.

Karma has a problem. A really pretty, really loud problem. (It isn’t, in fact, a problem he has. It’s a problem the neighbours have that he happens to be accountable for.) Nagisa might be able to sneak up on Japan’s most feared assassins, but sure as hell he doesn’t make for a good neighbour. Karma tries to help. (More or less.)

They don’t get many quiet days, at the Agency. There are jobs to do and people to help and things to arrange, and they’re desperately understaffed ever since he can remember. No one has time for things like quiet. (Except sometimes they do.) […] Life at the Armed Detective Agency is dangerous and chaotic. An hectic mess, except when it’s not.

He can’t see. The blindfold is securely tied over his eyes, plunging him in darkness he can’t breach with the tiger’s sight. Not that he actually can use it, anyway, not when Dazai makes sure to always be touching him. Sometimes, the tiger needs taming. Dazai is more than happy to provide an helping hand.

“Neither does Kunikida, or Kenji, or Ranpo-san,” he says, trying to understand her reasons. She’s not fazed, taking another bite from the fish.

“But Kunikida-san or Kenji or Ranpo-san aren’t Dazai-san,” she replies, like it’s so completely obvious it’s not worth mentioning again.

He knows Dazai has a terrible bedhead in the mornings, he knows he likes to get up first and make breakfast for him and Kyouka even though he’s kind-of-probably still a guest, he knows he drinks definitely too much coffee, black and too strong for Atsushi to even tolerate its smell.

He knows what it feels like waking up next to someone and seeing their face still drowsy with sleep, he knows what it means to fall asleep to steady breathing close to him and an arm casually wrapped around his middle. He knows Dazai doesn’t sleep as much as he should, and he knows that he has nightmares on rainy nights.

He often has, but rainy nights are the worst. Atsushi is not about to ask why.

Questions for Fanfic Authors.

I answered these like... five years ago or so, but because the 6th anniversary of my first ever posted fanfic is coming up, so I thought I’d do this again just to see how far I’ve come over the years. It’s always nice to look back to see just how much you’ve changed and grown as a person.

Enjoy this completely useless information!

1. Describe yourself how you would describe a character you’re introducing. The young woman was shorter than average with long, curly brunette hair and eyes that matched the color of warm sea water . Although plus sized, she was healthy and stout especially in her legs where her muscles were the most defined. She was indeed a beautiful young woman.

2. Is there any specific ritual you go through while/before/after your writing? Eh, not really. I usually just get an idea and run with to see where it goes. If I think it’s worth exploring, I’ll properly plan or whatever needs to be done to flesh it out. At most, I listen to some ambiance to keep my ADHD occupied.

3. What Is Your ABSOLUTE FAVORITE kind of fic to write? As some of you already know, my guilty pleasures are mpreg, sickfics, and angst. My newest one is A/B/O, but I’m very picky about how it’s written and I have yet to write anything with it (hint hint, wink wink). I also enjoy writing smut, but I don’t normally post it.

4. Are there any other fic writers you admire? If so, who and why? I have a few, but they’re all spread out between different fandoms.

5. How many words can you write if you sit down and concentrate intensely for an hour? It depends. It’s rare for me to be able to focus that long unless I’m in a hyper-focus. I think my record is around 3,000 or so.

6. First fic/pairing you wrote for? I first wrote for the Ianthony fandom and my first story was a Oneshot I called “Polar Bear Swimming.” My first multi-chaptered fic was also for the Ianthony fandom and it’s called “Miracle.” Both are almost six-years-old and I don’t recommend reading them if you want to keep your eyesight, but they’re still up if you’re a daredevil. Just read at your own risk.

7. Inspiration, Time, Or Motivation? Choose Two. Inspiration is usually never that big of an issue for me, so definitely time and motivation.

8. Why do you choose to write? It’s an escape from reality... and it’s just really fun to pair people together. It most likely will never happen in real life, but it sure is fun as hell to make it happen in works of fiction. I also can’t draw worth crap, so words had to do.

9. Do you have plans to write anything other than Fanfiction? I might at some point. I wanted to have a book published not fanfic related by the time I was 21, but I’m 24 now and it hasn’t happened yet. Maybe one day, but for now I’m pretty content with writing fanfic.

10. What inspires you the most? Anything can be inspiration for me.

11. Weirdest thing you’ve ever written/thought about writing? Most of the things I write and think about are pretty normal for shippers, but the non-trans mpreg and A/B/O is definitely weird to the average person so probably that.

12. Fic(s) that you wished you had written better. EVERYTHING on my Wattpad. Everything over there absolutely reeks of new shipper and first time writer, but I keep it up just as a reminder of how much I have improved over the years. If you check it out, please do so at your own risk.

13. Favorite fic from another author? I have different ones spread through different fandoms, so I guess I’ll just name one from each fandom I’ve participated in. Some of these are old, but they’re still great!

14.Your favorite side pairings to put in? I tend to not use side pairings, but when I do it’s usually taken from real life couples.

15. Your guilty writing pleasure? Same as number three.

16.Do you have structured ideas of how your story is supposed to go, or make it up as you write? Normally, when I get an idea, I just throw it out on a word document. There’s no structure to it, it’s literal brain splatter. If I think it’s worth writing, I’ll then flesh it out to make it coherent. I used to do this only for my chaptered stories, but I now do this with my oneshots as well.

17. Would you describe yourself as a fast writer? Eh, it depends. Sometimes if I’m hyper-focused, I can usually type things out pretty fast, but more often than not, it takes a while.

18. How old were you when you first started writing? I wrote my first story on Microsoft Word 2003 when I was eight or nine-years-old. It was called The Little Ice Skater and it was just a poor retelling of the Disney movie Ice Princess and it was typed with caps lock on because I thought it looked cool.

19: Why did you start writing? I HATED reading stories because there would always be something about them that I wanted to change, so I guess my little 4th grade self just got tired of it and started making her own.

20. Four sentences from a work that you’re most proud of.

He’d known for years that Dan loved him no matter what, but what about his friends and coworkers? Would they have looked at him differently? Or would he even have any friends left at all? The answer seemed obvious now, but at the time he had been so unsure.

If yes, how does it feel to be a part of fandom and passionately stanning them because my family curse me for stanning celebrities asking me if I'm a teenager. So wanted to know your opinion

I don't know what everyone's talking about with this 'middle-aged man' stuff. For the record, I'm "29" years old! 🤥

There are so many reasons why people might try to make me feel ashamed or weird or wrong for being a BXG. Gender, age, race, sexual orientation, geographic location, political leanings. In my '29 years' on this earth I’ve learned a few really important things I recommend people reflect on a bit:

Social stigma is not about you, it’s about conformity

People who try to shame or attack you for doing something that brings you joy are usually doing so because of ignorance, social conditioning and a blind spot in their emotional intelligence. I’m putting this politely because really, people who do this should just piss off.

There are very rare exceptions where people might be justified in shaming or dissuading others - for example, when confronting hate speech or other harmful behavior - but when it comes to hobbies, interests and personal preferences, they are completely out of line.

Anyone who tries to shame, attack or dissuade you is trying to shove you back into a box that they feel comfortable keeping you in. They are trying to make themselves comfortable because you have stepped outside the status quo - you’ve stepped outside of what is deemed socially or culturally acceptable - and that tends to make people nervous.

In pretty much every culture around the globe, there is immense social pressure to conform to the norms of that group. If you step outside of what’s expected of you, no matter how much happiness stepping out might bring you, there will always be people who will try to ‘correct’ the ‘problem’ by making it undesirable for you to continue to do so.

When someone tries to shame you for being into fandom (or for pretty much anything, really), that’s what they are doing - they’re trying to make you ‘be like them’ again. They are trying to shift you back into line. To get you to conform. And while they aren’t always conscious of it, when they do that they are being total assholes.

Particularly when it’s something that brings you joy, brings you a sense of youthful enthusiasm and beauty, and makes life struggles more endurable.

There was a great quote posted here the other day by @accio-victuuri that I think sums it up really nicely:

It might seem obvious that scolding or teasing or deriding people for the joy they find in life is just a total dick thing to do, but conformity is such a powerful force that those being scolded, shamed, etc. don’t often fully grasp the wrong that’s being done to them. More often they will internalize a sense of guilt, embarrassment and shame.

It’s so easy to get sucked into believing we are wrong to do something that transgresses social/cultural norms. So much so that we will often stop what we’re doing, change our behavior, or at least try to hide it or be less open about it.

I’m here to tell you that conformity is social poison that leads us away from self-actualization and fulfillment in our lives. I’m constantly saying this, and I really strongly believe it: In a world where conformity is king, selfhood and self love are a revolutionary act.

Make no mistake about it, we have to carve out space in our world to be who we want to be and do what we want to do. No one’s just going to ‘let’ us be ourselves. Human society doesn’t generally work that way.

And that goes for every aspect of who we are. Not just fandoms, but our very identity as people. Sexual preference, gender identity, social groups or interests we want to be a part of, spiritual or cultural practices we identify with, careers we want to pursue... Anything we want to do that falls outside of the norms of the group we are in - whether it be a friend group, a family group or some other grouping of humans - we have to fight for.

It is our right to do so. Don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise.

One of the ways we can do that is by finding like-minded people to connect with. I think that’s what we all do. It’s what’s led us all here to Tumblr to share our love of GGDD.

As for the people in our lives who aren’t so like-minded, I deal with them by trying to expand their horizons. They don’t mean to be total assholes, they just aren’t self-aware of what they’re doing. They haven’t yet carved out space in their understanding of the world, for me to be a BXG and for that to be OK. I’m perfectly happy to help them to do that. 😊

You can do that too, by making a case not unlike the one I laid out above. Or you can simply ask them, “Why would you try to make me feel bad about something that brings me joy?”

Social pressuring behavior is almost never based on conscious reflection or awareness. It’s knee-jerk and subliminal.

When we ask someone to explain why they are doing something, they are forced to reflect on their motivations. They might have never done this type of self-examination before, or really tried to understand why they do the things they do. It can often lead to ‘aha’ moments and a shift in awareness and behavior.

Or at the very least it might make people realize they are being dicks and make them think twice about pressuring you a second time.

Age is a meaningless concept

No one tells you this when you’re growing up, but you never stop being you. The you that you are right in this current moment - this is the same you that you’ll be when you’re 95. How you feel inside about being you will likely never change in any major way.

In fact, almost nothing about the experience of self changes as we age. The only truly dramatic change that happens to us as we age is that other people start looking at us differently and treating us differently.

A lot of younger people seem to think of older people as ‘someone different from me’, but in truth everyone is fundamentally human, with all that implies. We have all the same hopes, feelings, pains, fears and needs as people who are younger or older than us.

This is why ‘ageism’ is a Thing just like sexism, racism, queerphobia, etc. are Things. Because age is an arbitrary distinction that can’t tell us anything meaningful about another human being.

In the same way that it’s completely awful when someone is shocked to see a female neurosurgeon or a generous Jewish person, it’s completely awful when someone is shocked to see an elder who is into music and likes to ride motorcycles. In the same way that people of different faiths, ethnicities, gender identities and sexual orientations are equal and fundamentally similar as human beings, so too are older (and younger) people fundamentally similar to all other human beings.

I look forward to the day when people don’t lose their dignity and the respect and interest of those around them as they age. Unfortunately that day is unlikely to come until/unless we find the technology to keep people looking young, because humans respond to each other based on superficialities. Most of the time when a younger person sees an older person they don’t see a fellow human, they see an old person. They respond to them based on the texture of their skin rather than the content of their character.

But the shriveled up old lady who can’t reach the prunes in aisle 5 has the same heart and spirit in her that she had at 20. She looks out through those cloudy eyes with the same bright mind she’s always had. Her heart still skips a beat when she gets a compliment from a hot guy.

If you took the time to talk to her and ask her about the things that bring her joy, you’d find she is just like you and has all the same feelings and needs and interests that she’s always had.

When I was a teenager I had no idea that when I got older I would still feel the same. I assumed that I would turn into a different person as I aged. I haven’t. I’m still me. I always will be. I might become better at processing and navigating my experiences and the world around me and I might become more self-aware and more knowledgeable and better at dealing with my emotions, but inside, the mental narrator of my life - the protagonist of my psyche - hasn’t changed at all.

It’s a difficult concept to explain. Maybe it’s something we need to experience in order to understand, but how we feel inside doesn’t change just because our hair starts to turn grey, to mutiny, and to retreat back from our foreheads. Inside I’m the same cool person strangers used to want to meet when they saw me enter a room, despite the fact that I’ve become more and more invisible as I get older.

Everyone you know is in the closet

In the closet about being gay, in the closet about being an alcoholic, in the closet about being into Pokemon, in the closet about wanting to be a lawyer, in the closet about believing in reincarnation, in the closet about being poor, in the closet about liking nail art, in the closet about hating Lee Daniels films, in the closet about wanting to be spanked because they’ve been a very, very bad boy. Etc. etc.

As people get older they don’t stop doing or feeling things, they just learn to hide it.

The little kid who squeals over a cute baby bunny will still squeal at 35. The only difference is, he might not do so as openly. People don’t stop feeling squeeful about baby bunnies. They just become really practiced at hiding it. Sometimes they hide it so deeply that they completely lose touch with those feelings, but if given the chance and freedom to explore it, they’ll find those feelings are still there.

When you really think about who the ideal person is in the minds of the people around you, and when you think about the fact that almost everyone is striving on some level to be the ideal person, and when you think about just how incredibly narrow that concept is... it starts to become really obvious why people hide who they really are.

There are always more people like you than you realize. There are also always more people unlike you than you realize. This is true in the fandom, for sure. There are definitely a lot of people older than you. A lot of people from walks of life where fandom would be frowned upon. A lot more men than will openly admit being into GG and DD. But they’re there. Don’t ever feel alone.

You do you

Depending on the practices in your region of the world, one day they’re going to put you into a box and bury you in the ground, or burn you up and scatter the ashes, or (I’ll spare you this macabre list).

We have such a limited amount of time on this earth, and it goes by incredibly fast. We endure so much in our lives, and overcome so many obstacles. We have the right to make the most of our existence, in whatever way brings us joy and meaning.

There are always going to be people who try to shit all over your parade. The older you get, the more this will happen. Start early, work hard at showing the people around you that you are going to be you and do you and they better get used to it.

This only gets harder over time. If you get started now, your life will be more fulfilling and more meaningful than if you wait for the ‘right time’. Spoiler alert: that time won’t ever come, because ‘the right time’ is something you create, not something you capitalize on. Like I said before, no one’s going to just ‘let’ you be you. YOU is something you will have to fight for every step of the way.

And life is not only more fun that way, and more fulfilling - it’s also more meaningful because you get the chance to inspire others to do the same. You can be a living example for those around you. If you can’t find it in yourself to do it for you, then do it for them.

I try to be the first person on the dancefloor at a party, when everyone is standing around awkwardly watching the lights scatter across the tiles. The guy who makes it OK for everyone else to dance. I don’t mind making an ass of myself, because I know a secret none of them know, but hopefully some of them will learn: making an ass of yourself is fun.

Despite any differences we might have, people here have made me feel very welcome. While it has its downsides, one of the great things about the internet is that it distills us down to text on a page so we can focus on what we have in common.

So, to answer your question, stanning them is fun, joyful and fulfilling. I love it. I make no apologies, even when I’m aggressively pressed to. 🙂
