i feel like im not making any sense but does anyone else feel like there are stories that let u run with them and ones that spell everything out for you
#im reading that post that says artists are directors of audience reaction and not its dictator:#'you cannot guarantee that everyone viewing your work will react as you are trying t make them react. a good artist knows that this is what#allows work to breath. by definition you cannot have art where the viewer brings nothing to the table ... this is why you have to let go of#the urge to plainly state in text exactly how you think the work should be interpreted ... its better to be misinterpreted sometimes than#to talk down to your audience. you wont even gain any control that way; people will still develop their opinions no matter what you do#im thinking abt this again cuz i was thinking maybe the thing that lets adventure time work so well the way it does is cuz it doesnt#take itself too seriously that it gives the audience enough room to fuck with subtext and then fuck with them back yknow. i think it was#mentioned somewhere that they werent even planning to run with the postapocalyptic elements that are hinted in the show but changed their#mind after the one off with the frozen businessmen and dominoed into marcy and simons backstory. on the other side there are stories that#explain too much to let the story speak for itself and i think it ends up having to do more with the crew trying to lead ppl in a certain#direction than expand on what they have and i see a lot of this with miraculous. like when interviews and tweets are used as word of god in#arguments and it becomes a little stifling to play around with it knowing the creator can just interject. u can say its the crews effort to#engage with its audience but it feels more like micromanaging. and none of this is to say there ISNT room for stories that spell things out#theyre just suited for different things. if sesame street tried abstract approaches to themes and nuance itd be counterproductive#a lot of things fly over my head so i need help picking things apart to get it- but it doesnt have to be from the story itself. ive picked#picked up or built on my own interpretations listening to other ppl share their thoughts which creates conversation around the same thing#sometimes stories will spell things out for you without being so obvious abt it that it feels like its woven into the text. my fav example#for this might be ATLA using younger characters as its main cast but instead of feeling like its dumbed down for kids to understand why war#is bad its framed from a childs point of view so younger audiences can pick up on it by relating to the characters. maybe an 8 year old#wont get how geopolitics works but at least they get 'hey the world is a little more complicated than everyone vs. fire nation'. same for#steven universe bc its like theyre trying to describe and put feelings into words that kids might not have so they have smth to start with#especially with the metaphors around relationships bc even if it looks unfamiliar as a kid now maybe the hope is for it to be smth you can#look back to. thats why it feels like these shows grew up with me.. instead of saving difficult topics for 'when im ready for it'#as if its preparing me for high school it gave me smth to turn in my hands and revisit again and again as i grow. stories that never#treated u as dumb all along. just someone who could learn and come back to it as many times as u need to. i loved SU for the longest time#but i felt guilty for enjoying it hearing the way ppl bash it. bc i was a kid and thought other ppl understood it better than me and made#feel bad for leaning into the message of paying forward kindness and not questioning why steven didnt punish the diamonds or hold them#accountable. but im rewatching it now and going oh. i still love this show and what it was trying to teach me#yapping#diary

The good news: I have written over 3000 words on a single project, which I haven't done in a startlingly long while.
The bad news: I have written it for a fanfic for a fandom I will never in a million years share.
The good news: But hey, I still wrote it, wrote something, and I still had fun writing it.

"The Truth? What makes you think I'm capable of such a thing?"
Another drawing of my darling shapeshifter OC. The hands are either its old forms, or people who have directly influenced its forms. I based this of a photo, extra info under the cut!
I based the drawing on this photo:

But I cannot for the life of me find the source, and I really did try. So if anyone knows who the original artist is, please let me know and I'll give proper credit!

one thing about becoming an adult and more time passing since you left school is that you start making a really embarrassing amount of spelling mistakes

added ur commentary to the post hope u don’t mind!! was nice to learn the real explanation behind it :)
yes, of course! not at all! i hope i didn't come off as too self-righteous or correct-y or anything. i learned cool things today too because i've only ever read FMA in English, so i didn't even realize automail was one of those types of words until i saw your post :D

I've been turning over the idea of evolving Elliot's story into a piece of original fiction ever since I started playing my space campaign with him, but I have nary an idea of how I'd even go about slaying that particular dragon. More thoughts under the cut, because I don't want this clogging up anyone's dash.
It's been nearly a DECADE since I've ventured into original fiction territories, and I've never been so ambitious as to write more than a few pages of prose during that time. I was an idiot teenager who thought I'd major in creative writing, which is multifactorial in its hilarity, but mostly because I got distracted by shiny new projects every other week and couldn't be assed to read books.
You know, books? The things writers make? Yeah. Couldn't be bothered.
So why am I going back to this? What has possessed me into thinking that I could actually cobble together an honest-to-god story for him? It doesn't make any sense. I can't even shit out my own academic paper for funsies (cue flashbacks to my project that I abandoned after like three pages of scarcely-cited ramblings; it was on voxel-based morphometry so the 'fun' aspect is debatable, but you know. Whatever).
Sighs. Writing is just so... intimidating. No, not the kind of writing I'm doing right now, the other kind! The kind that matters. The kind where you weave together stories that people WANT to read, where words are plucked fresh from the blossoming tree branch of unmyelinated neurons that are doing their job and not worrying "hmm does this sound good, or am I kidding myself?"
I'd love to write a book. But as with most things I've never done before, I don't quite know where to begin.
Maybe I should start by reading one.

funniest defense of that one writer that keeps saying nonsense and funding hate groups You Know The One is when people say "well i still like her work because she writes well"
have you actually read a single fucking word of her latest works
i know nobody in their right mind should willingly subject themselves to this but i beg you to look up the polish character in her detective story

I NEED TO START PROOFREADING MY SHIT yes it WAS supposed to say soft and here and WHAT a beautiful place;; Well done translating my gibberish to regular language shhzvgs. Kinshiro's face hate I swear to god...
HAJVGHKJFGS TBF whatever face hate is, kinshirou was probably experiencing it for most of season 1 LMAOOO;;; thank you for confirming i translated correctly akvhsfgds!! AND DW the last fic i wrote (in a rare burst of effort to explain the baby kinchan thing like a week ago..) i swear i was rush scanning the internet spellchecker for errors as i was posting it and i was STILL finding stuff like “Kinshhirou” and “arouind” every time i scrolled back over it havjshd
im normally able to spell the words i use everyday but i write stuff like this longhand and then type it up, so im looking at the paper when i type it and don’t actually glance at the screen till later. i honestly had one sentence where my hands must have gotten slightly misaligned with the keyboard and it was just genuine keysmash gibberish that i had to retype ha;jvksghd i was checking the whole thing for that stuff as i was rushing to post it before running out the door like. proofreading by the skin of my teeth a;kvjhsgd (im sorry to let you all know this is how i write)

being normal about audiobooks again. prommy. but whyyyyy why why why why why why dont audiobook narrators following in other narrator’s footsteps within the same series (ESPECIALLY FANTASY) just . quickly have a listen to the prev person’s pronunciation of words. i wish it wasnt this hard and yet.
#im listening to crystal awakening and well 1. i looooove learning new stuff about delanos and all the spires#and i love that this is katashi again even tho we technically already associate katashi with a different spire but like thats wrong#and id love to know what the timeline on this is (though if the prologue has anything to do with that i think its a couple years before AA)#but its like. ugh ok listen to nick podehl when narrating aa is narrating from a limited 1st pov so it doesnt matter how he says delanos#i mean it . does but i can ignore it bc corin is from valia so we can just pretend the inconsistency there is on corins part#but you caaaant have a valian character pronounce valia as vah-lia if corin pronounces it vay-lia#&&& like with the whole delanos thing its more of a declension issue so its fine i can pretend to be normal#but like. brother the word is spelled valia it should not be so hard you literally have a 50% success rate#& like. im pretty sure corin mentions valia within the very first chapter of aa1#(and also in general i dont really care i think i as the audience should get to complain and make demands. bc i love aa)#anyway its whatever i am loving this one a lot#i think sage is such a sweetheart (& emiko but that goes without saying) & hahne (idk how to spell that)#theyre very very interesting & mysterious which we love. & i love the male narrator a lot i love how he makes aldis sound#recently read#starting the year off right by reading both of my fave authors (andrew & china)

If you don’t know how to spell Mo Dao Zu Shi and you’re not gonna double check your spelling just go ahead and call it MDZS like everyone else. The creative spellings I’ve seen in the past couple of weeks are going to put me in an early grave.
And also, if you’re tagging your posts and you spell Mo Dao Zu Shi wrong, it’s not going to show up for people searching for posts unless they misspell it in the exact same specific way you misspelled it. So. Truly. Just type MDZS. Since “learn to spell” is apparently too much of an ask for this fandom.
