5) dash commentary

It's great! Often a fun way for people to acknowledge their mutuals' posts, IC or OOC! It can also help to really promote the feel of this place being an rp community. No one has to put themselves out there to make friends or whatevs, but still, interacting with your writing partners outside of just threads can go for miles. I will say that dash comm can kind of be a slippery slope though.

Sometimes, open commentary on something that's more so happening in private - so no one else outside of the characters in the thread should be aware of it - can make things very awkward, but that's where communication comes in. You can ask all parties involved if it's ok to make commentary, or you can just comment on it in private to them! Can't speak for others, but I personally would love to hear how entertaining what I'm doing with someone else is.

Lastly. When it comes to dash comm posts that are tagged as crack (so they're not to be taken seriously), I've noticed that people tend to...ignore that? And treat the post as if the character is being serious. That can put the other person in a weird spot. I've gotten into some "didn't need/want this but ok" situations in the past because of it. So folks, if something is tagged as crack or a similar tag, you shouldn't make a big ol' fuss about it.

Definitely a feature that should be used, especially if you're the type that's too shy to send something with your blog's handle attached. Unfortunately, tons of losers take advantage of the anonymity to harass others / send hate. With that in mind, I feel everyone should remember that anon asks are a privilege and NOT a right. If you need to turn it off for your peace of mind, absolutely do it. The shy people will have to just step outside of their shell, send you things in IMs, or not send anything at all. They'll adapt.

I'm aware that someone who's committed can create burner accounts, but you can always block them. If they make a new one, block that too. To me, blocking burners is a small price to pay for not letting hatred flood your inbox.

Speaking of anon hate, I'll take this opportunity to drop a warning: there's an infamous troll / harasser most widely known as "phoenixissims" (that's the last blog they sat on for a long period) going around the DB RPC yet again. This post here & the linked google doc in it talk about this person extensively, but in general: if you get any weird anon asks that bring up Beerus, Vegeta, or come off as salty about the interactions you've been having with others (esp blogs who rp those characters), just delete them all and don't engage.

I keep anon enabled and did so for all my blogs, and none of them (fortunately?) ever received actual hate. At this point it's almost unnerving really... considering the awful things I've heard getting sent to my good friends (misguidedly ofc). Anyway. I always feel like ribbing anons a little bit when they come in, especially for ooc memes (like this one).

This is a hobby that hinges on social interactions, so shying away from them is a dangerous forecast for hopefuls interacting. Show a little more backbone and kick someone's door down!! It's what I do!!! My recent mutuals can attest that my way of breaking the ice is sending a gif of a cat going through doors over IM. I've found several. It works every time.

In the end I'm indifferent. Would prefer they go off anon, but won't punish them for doing so. Even if I did get hate I'd probably leave them open.

11. magic anons

This was something I never really experienced myself, even back when they were more commonplace in the 2010s. It's a fun idea but also necessitates a more active blog that does more dynamic interactions... traits which do not fit my space for better or worse. I think I actually did a kinda magic thing with Raguna back on his own blog?

Nothing too dramatic but just carrying on with a 'silly idea' for a day. That's the closest I can think of for my involvement with magic anons. It kinda morphed into dash commentary, now that I think about it? As the community moved away from 'ask blogs' and made it more 'roleplay'... well, as I experienced the community at least.

They're cool, just not a good fit for me. I'm more inclined towards writing a thread that's an AU!

17. fanon interpretations

Canon characters fit within a spectrum of qualities and traits. None of my canons fit on the edge of any blade for how they should be perceived, and I wouldn't expect anyone else to keep it perfect either. That said... there's making adjustments to characters (ex. I tone down Tharja's connection to Robin) and then there's playing them totally ooc, like making a stoic character a memelord or some such.

Disclaimer: People are allowed to do this but I'm not required to like it. And would prefer if writers have it noted their character is either AU or divergent, y'know? Explore the possibilities but don't simultaneously claim it's legal canon. By changing details about your character the onus then falls on you to help people get filled in.

...which is a problem all its own with how little people read bios and rules nowadays. Maybe this is all for naught. Alas!

Also- I'm not a fan of people blaspheming canon characters in the name of shipping them. Leave it at that. It's not a landmine even I want to touch in public.

Yugo!

How I feel about this character:

I absolutely adore this sweet idiot, while he is very funny at times as a kind of comic relief character; Yugo has a lot of depth outside of that. He is a very sweet and caring kid, he knows very well that he acts before he thinks and owns up to it. With everything that goes on in the series, his behavior is justified, he's upset and angry about losing Rin. Someone very special and precious to him, Yugo is allowed to feel what he does and act on his strong emotions. He is just such a good character, everything he does is emotionally driven because he just has a huge heart to compensate for lack of brain cells. Yugo is sweet, dumb and funny, it adds some charm to his character!

All the people I ship romantically with character:

Rin!!!!! Of course! appleshipping is very wholesome! Rin meant the WORLD to Yugo! His reaction when Yuzu assumed Rin was Yugo's girlfriend is one of the sweetest scenes, him blushing and rocking side to side was just precious. Yugo adored her to the moon and back and went around anywhere and everywhere to look for her. Their dynamic is just too sweet, the way Yugo even cared for his d-wheel so much because they worked so hard to build it together is just another reason they're so perfect. Yugo has and only will ever like Rin.

my non-romantic OTP for this character:

Yuya!!!! The idiot and idiot duo. Best friends. Same braincell. These two would just get along so well, always smiling and laughing with eachother. They would have the most wholesome duels for just the fun of it. They deserved to have some interaction in canon, because just that scene when they were syncing during the duel was not enough. If they directly interacted they would just spider-man meme point at eachother and instantly become friends, Yuya would've been more than happy to help Yugo look for Rin.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:

A better reunion between Yugo and Rin would've been nice. Like the parasite thing was depressing, and then bam he never sees her again because she goes into the machine for Ray to be awakened. It was way too sad of an ending for those two and they deserved so much better. The whole thing with Rin always beating Yugo should've been an emotional build up within Yugo to beat Rin in their duel, Yugo wins and Rin becomes free of parasite control and they hug tightly. Rin tells Yugo thank you with tears in her eyes, she'd tell him he did a good job! Cue Yugo sobbing and holding Rin tightly because he never wants her to disappear again. Then Yugo can go look for Yuri to duel him and kick his butt for kidnapping Rin.

Yuto!!

How I feel about this character:

My second favorite of the Yu's! Immediatly at his introduction, I basically just went "Who is this emo child waltzing around, he is amazing" bam its a different version of Yuya. I thought his design and behavior were interesting, he was very angry but also it was sad to hear him apologize to Yuzu and to say he doesn't want to hurt her. You know he carries that guilt about Ruri and its rather sad. Yuto is such a good boy and he deserved way better than what he got. But at least within Yuya, he smiles and communicates with him, their bond through the series is very good. Yuto is very clearly a good sweet boy that went through way too much that he did not deserve. Protect him at all costs.

All the people I ship romantically with character:

Ruri!!! Im a big fallenangel shipper. I know there are people that don't like it despite it being one of the most canon couples aside from Yugo/Rin. The series made it very clear in the short flashbacks that they mutually had feelings for eachother. Yuto literally started crushing on Ruri immediately and was so awestruck; its freaking adorable. And that scene when he gets shy when Ruri rests her head on his shoulder??? CUTE! im cliche okay, they're very fluffy together. Plus the fact that Yuto falls for his best friends sister is rather precious, thats good stuff right there. Yuto really adored Ruri, and it was so sad to hear him say things like he didn't want to hurt her. What happened was not his fault.

my non-romantic OTP for this character:

Yuya! The other best friend pairing, their interactions through the series is very wholesome. Yuto really showed his true personality through the time he is within Yuya. Yuto is a doofus very much like Yuya who was scorned by war, but he smiles because of Yuya and even has funny comments here and there at times. Their bond is very very good, they understood eachother very well.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:

OH BOY! for starters it would've nice if Yuto and Yugo didn't have their miscommunication at all that lead to Yuto being absorbed into Yuya. That's one of the things that really upsets me in this series, Yuto is angry and out for revenge, all he knows is the face of the person who kidnapped Ruri and he sees Yugo. It makes sense for their to be that mistake, but Yugo literally blames Yuto for the same exact thing he's mad about it.

Yuto the one maybe more prone to using common sense would've heard Yugo blaming him for kidnapping Rin and thought ?? wait a minute, no! You kidnapped Ruri!! Its very much both their faults for not stopping for a second to understand this huge red flag in the situation and not just duel. Boys, use your brains and take a second to chat. They would've learned somethings not right and they're both innocent. Yuya could've also helped calm them both down. So instead of Yuto "dying" he and Yugo actually could've gotten along and teamed up together against Yuri...the real mastermind.

The Quick Guide To Interacting (Even If You’re Anxious)

My biggest piece of advice to RPer’s both new and old is don’t be afraid to reach out and talk to others first.

I have seen a lot of blogs come and go, and a lot of people expressing frustration about how they don’t get enough interaction, or how people never send them asks, or reply to their starters. The get disheartened, and many people stop writing as a result. And my thought is always the same:

Did you send an ask? Did you reply to an open starter? Did you make any attempt to interact with them or are you both just sitting on your thumbs um-ing and ah-ing and waiting for someone else to decide to message you first?

I don’t intend for this to sound mean at all, I understand that some people can be anxious (I certainly can be), but I also genuinely believe that a lot of anxiety is sprung from the lack of open communication. When I first started out I was one of the people who kind of just… posted a lot and hoped my followers would start sending stuff? And that didn’t happen. It made me feel really shitty and I lost a lot of confidence in myself and my writing. And that was wrong, both as a thought process and as an overarching mentality. My writing isn’t bad, my characterization isn’t bad, and I’m not a bad person. The only issue was that someone at some point needs to take the first step and say hello!

So! How do you say hello?

Step 1: See an ask meme on someones blog that you really want to befriend them, send them one or two questions! Read their answer! And then (and here’s the tricky part) leave a little comment in the replies of that post to tell them what part of their reply you liked, you can even leave a little IC reply of your muse reacting to something. - Now you’ve broken the ice! The mun knows who you are (and if you are mutuals) and will probably be pretty grateful that you sent an ask! You can now send more, and they might even send you a few back! Now you’re interacting!

(Note: If they haven’t posted a meme in a while, you can scroll back through their blog and find one, or think up one of your own - send in the QUESTION, not the icon. Treat it as a stand alone. People love writing about their muses, so you just need to create the opportunity for them to do so!)

Step 2: Now that you’re interacting, you can try to send an IC ask (You can do this in step 1 too, but if you’re more shy you can wait for step 2!) - whether its from a meme or not. Starting from a question means that you are already in the middle of a conversation with the muses, and it helps to make things flow more smoothly. Don’t be stressed if the thread dies after a reply or two - it’s not meant to last forever, that’s okay! It’s meant to allow the two of you to get a feel of each other and your writing styles. Have fun with it!

Step 3: Send an IM. This might feel like the biggest step, but do not worry. A compliment, I find, is the kindest and nicest way to introduce yourself ooc. I know that I for one am always very flattered if someone takes the time to find something about my recent reply/writing/characterization/hcs and share that with me. A little ‘Hello! I laughed so much at xxxx line you wrote’ or ‘I love your hc on xxxx!’ is such a nice message to get. Being nice is the best way to make friends and it can lead to more RP in the future.

Note: If you don’t ‘click’ don’t worry. You’re not always going to be best friends with everyone. Leave it be. That doesn’t mean that they don’t appreciate your asks, and won’t send you some, and it doesn’t mean that you can never write together. It just means that you don’t have perfect chemistry. If you don’t click it is still a very nice idea to send people memes and questions when they appear on your dash. The community thrives off of participation! So participate and you’ll find the good karma comes around.

Furthermore, don’t be dissuaded by seeing others interact with their friends on the dashboard. Some people have been writing together for years, and its presumptuous to assume you will have the same friendship in only a few days. It’s not elitist for someone to have fun with their own bestie.

And sometimes you just don’t get along with someone at all. The chemistry isn’t there. It doesn’t mean either of you are bad people or that your writing is bad - it just means you aren’t compatible. Let it go. You’ll find your people.

A final disclaimer: read peoples rules and blogs - they are there to help facilitate interaction!

If there’s a rule saying ‘I only write with mutuals’, then wait to become a mutual to send or request something IC. If there’s a rule saying ‘I don’t write XYZ’ then don’t send an ask about XYZ.

And read their blogs because they might have a list of open starters, a wishlist, or even a plot generator pre-prepared! Use this to your advantage - they are telling you want they are interested in writing! That’s a huge hint :D

im such a clutz, but thank you for dealing with me. i was little nervous to start up such a discord server because im bad at staying in one. though, the warm environment that you all provide makes me feel much more at ease. i think it’s funny popping in to the server and seeing a few people spamming the chat with hugs, headpats and kisses. it’s sweet, too. being in a group discord can get overwhelming for some people, so i appreciate you all for having that patience. another thing- thank you for understanding each other’s boundaries. its hard to be aware all the time especially when you’re interacting with people you don’t know to at a very personal level. im glad that you all helped each other make the space comfy. i look forward to more chaotic and genuine talks with all of you in the future. maybe we’ll still be in touch with each other after a long while? who knows. but im going to cherish every single moment i get with you all.
