This Week in BL - it was a pretty darn good time, frankly
Organized, in each category, with ones I'm enjoying most at the top.
Feb 2024 Wk 4
Ongoing Series - Thai
The Sign (Sat YT) ep 12fin - Everyone looked like they were having a lot of fun in the fight sequences. Iâm very happy for them. Iâm not surprised they shot Khem and Chart. A little shocked it wasnât also Yai, TBH.
I found this final episode rushed. According to rumors, The Sign was originally slated to be 14 eps, and it probably shouldâve been. And I donât say that often about Thai BL. But we all knew it was getting too bloated for its britches, so I'm not surprised they fumbled the ending. For me personally, it just wasn't that bad. It was fine and I was fine with it.
Tho, Billy does not look good with facial fur, messes up those gorgeous angles.
I was ultimately amused that the solution to the mythology thread was simply to talk to the river god and persuaded him to give up... off screen. It felt very old school wuxia. Or like Aeschylus or something. I did adore the stinger, Saint was basically like âI want wings tooâ.Â
FINAL THOUGHTS
This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. It's BL, queer, band of brothers, romcom, erotica, PNR, fated mates, police procedural, fantasy, mystery, suspense, and slasher. Itâs the king of genre mash-up chaos. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it. Was it a crazy unhinged mess +1 roll for damage? Yes. Yes it was. Did it manage to hold all those tangled threads together? No it did not. Was it also a charming, sexy, engaging, non-stop piece of entertainment? Sure thing. I think this show is basically my KinnPorsche, and frankly Iâve been chasing that dragon naga since KP aired. Is it perfect? No. But it was balls to the wall FUN and that gets a 9/10 from me.
I'm thinking of doing a full recap review (partly because I have so many great screen shots.)
Cherry Magic (Sat YouTube grey) ep 10-11 of 12 - Since this series is following the yaoi so closely, I knew these were the separation eps. (Also I knew with would be a soft non-doom ep 11, Japan rarerly does these.) I like that they used it to show improve communication and development in all relationships, but, frankly, TayNew are just best when they are TayNew together on screen. So yeah. Letâs keep them back together, please?
Meanwhile, TayNew gifted us a gorgeous loving sweet sex scene. Thanks OG for doing us a solid.Â
I wanna add, it sure is fun to see New play as soft and vulnerable character, I feel like he hasnât done that since SOTUS.Â
(Read all about distribution issues here.)
Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 12fin - 1/3 of this is a sweet romance about a student doctor falling in love with a student chef, and the rest of it is utter dross. Look the OffGun bits were GREAT.. In fact, I think theyâre better AS A PAIR in this show than in any of their other BLS. And I'm a hard sell on any OffGun being better than PickRome. Saying that, how can I review a show where I could only tolerate 1/3 of it? Because I didnât like any other aspect of this show, no other pairs and no other plots. That gives me: 9/10 for the OffGun bits, 5/10 for everything else. Frankly it probably should be an 8 but I gotta go with my gut and it's upset about this so 7/10. Sorry boys. Itâs GMMTVâs fault. Your heart was in this show, mine wasnât.Â
City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 4 of 12 - These two are so good at making heart eyes at each other. Itâs ridiculous. They donât need any cartoon images or noises. Moot crush but "I wanna flirt and court more" is so flipping awesome. I love this for them⌠and us.Â
1000 Years Old ep 2 of 12 - Itâs very silly and we have been gifted with the dorkiest vampire ever. But... the smell thing makes me so happy. And I like that the vamp uses chan/nai or tan = v old fashioned. Nahlak. I love our ghost girl. Did you notice she wasnât in the room with them but they left an empty chair for her? Also nahlak.
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Perfect Propose (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 5 of 6 - Kai was pretty much just âyou're a workaholic but I basically married you whether you like it or not.â SMOOCH. What can I say? I'm a sucker for this dynamic.
AntiReset (Taiwan Fri Viki/Gaga) ep 5 of 10 - How is this show so cute? How do they both love and hurt each other so much. They are both just scared of loosing each other. Gah.
Unknown (Taiwan Sat Youku YouTube) 1 of 12 eps - Youku dropped the first ep to their YouTube channel but I doubt we can expect that to continue. Still, it was nice to be able to watch it in a convenient way. I enjoyed it. But I am cautious about it. Of course this is possibly two of my favorite tropes of all time (stepbrothers or a variation + hyung romance). So Iâm looking forward to the romantic thread, but from the gritty style, it feels a lot more like a Taiwanese short. Which means it could go very dark and may not end happy.Â
Although I Love You and You AKA Sukiyanen Kedo Do Yaro ka (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 7 of 10 - I just donât know if the main couple should be a couple. But when they finally get around to talking to each other, they sure are lovely. Also how great is it to see a uke initiate a kiss? Even if itâs not a very good kiss.Â
My Strawberry Film (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 2 of 8 - I am still not sure about this one. I am not contesting its quality, just saying itâs not for me. Also Iâm not wild about what amounts to basically a redo of everything that already happened in the first episode from a different perspective. I know itâs a tall order with Japan, but I would like (when itâs a short series) for each new installment to actually move the plot (such as it is) along in someway. Am I asking too much?
It's done but I have no time
What Did You Eat Yesterday Season 2 AKA Kinou Nani Tabeta? Season 2 (Japan Gaga) 10 eps - will binge when I have any spare time. 2024 is crazy busy for me so far.
The Servant and the Young Master - from Vietnam, it's on YouTube. I will give it a try when I have a window of time.
Began Beginning (Myanmar YouTube) - A Burmese BL? @heretherebedork vouched for it, so I will give it a watch.
It's airing but...
Dead Friend Forever (Thai iQIYI) - rumors are it's interesting but full of unlikable characters. I'm waiting to know how it ends.
Ossans Love Season 2 (Japan Gaga) - 5 years later, will anything have changed? This is Japan so⌠probubly not. I won't be watching this. I disliked Season one and actively hated the follow ups. No thank you.
Playboyy (Thurs Gaga) 14 eps - Dear Playboyy, it's not you, itâs me⌠I hate you. Youâre about as deep (and as palatable) as a shot glass of cum. While I'm sure youâre someoneâs kink, you're my weakest link. Goodbye. I DNFed this at ep 5. Frankly I'm impressed with myself for getting that far. Ends next week TF.
Time the series (Tue Gaga/YT) 10 eps - dropped it at ep 4.
A Secretly Love (Thai WeTV) - I tried but I can't get into my WeTV account anymore and I'm way too lazy to figure it out. Should I bother to go grey for it?
To Be Continued (Thai C3 Thailand YT) - High school sweethearts who had a bad break up reunite when both of them have full time jobs but coming out is still a problem. You can watch this on YT but it has no Eng Subs.
Next Week Looks Like This:
We're light on content right now, but frankly I'm so busy with work I don't really mind.
3/6 Born to be Y (Thai ????) 10 eps - 14 contestants who audition to compete in Born To Be Y, a program that searches for the best couple of the year to work together on a giant project. Described as semi-reality series. So I probably won't bother.
3/7 Deep Night (Thai iQiyi) 10 eps - Multiple romances set in a host clubs. Nice to see First back on my screen but this is not my favorite setting.
Upcoming BLs for 2024 are listed here. This list is not kept updated, so please leave a comment if you know something new or RP with additions.

Coming Out [Poly! Erasermic x {Fem}Reader]
Hello! this was a requested fic from like before Christmas. I'M A MESS I KNOW I'M SORRY! Iâll be catching up at some point, I'm in my final sem at uni and have MAJOR senioritis. Me no do unless me have to. Instead, now I just spend my time staring at the existential abyss the threatens to swallow my ceiling and think about everything I'm procrastinating. But I digress...
Content Warning: This story is of a negative experience coming out as poly to your family, this deals with rejection from the reader's mother, father, and a grandparent. This story demonstrates Homophobia, xenophobia, traditionalist and conservative values and attitudes and may be triggering to some folks.
This story includes a Polyamorous relationship
Polyamory: the practice of engaging in multiple sexual relationships with the consent of all the people involved.
Word Count: 3.7 K (A baby story)
Y/N --- 4:06pm
Hey can my roomates come to dinner?
DAD --- 4:06
You mean the gays?
Y/M --- 4:08
Please donât call them that. Neither of them are gay anyways, thereâs more than just gay or straight.
DAD --- 4:10
Yeah whatever. Let your mom decide.
MOM --- 5:12
Sure, they can come.
Mom --- 5:23
Gma might be coming dinner tho. Maybe talk to them?
That conversation should have been enough of a warning for how the evening was going to transpire. At news of your grandmother attending dinner, you panicked and tried to back out of your plans. You had been growing steadily farther apart from your parents anyways, barely seeing them more that once a year if that. Itâs not like they didnât have their suspicions anyways, to them you were a single woman living in the big city sharing an apartment with two gay men. Not that theyâd ever been to the apartment. If they had they might have notice that one of the two âbedroomsâ was being used as an office. Earlier on in the relationship you were so deeply uncomfortable being around your parents alone, that you had Shouta come with you every visit because you were so paranoid you were just going to come out on the spot.
At first your parents were sure that you and Shouta were together. He had subconsciously cleaned up quite nice the first few times he met your parents anyways, wanting to make a good impression on them if you finally did tell them about your polyamorous relationship. Then as time went on you got busier and started to see them less. Shoutaâs parents lived in the suburbs and you saw them on holidays, plus Shouta had come out to them as being bisexual a long time ago and hadnât felt much pressure to hide the polyamorous nature of your relationship to begin with. Hizashiâs mom was still a city dweller in her 60âs and on top of doing the cute mom things like baking fantastic cookies and handing down family jewelry to the daughter in law, sheâd also taken Hizashi and Shouta to their first pride in Tokyo and had an in-home recording studio where she recorded for local punk bands. She was, quite literally, a cool mom.
You gnawed vigorously at your thumbnail, not quiet biting the whole way through, instead riddling it with dents and cracks. Chewing your nails wasnât a habit youâd always had, it became a sort of silent worry thing you started to do when you got to your agency and had to remain still and quiet during briefings, no matter how terrible the news was. Your ruined nail beds were an atrocity to Hizashi, who had paid several times for you to get a manicure to get your nails short and evenly trimmed so you could manage them on your own. You still somehow found a way to gnaw on the short squared off nubs of your nails though, and it drove him nuts. Shouta cared less, his hands were in ridiculous shape, he was callused and bruised, cracked and flaking all over the place and Hizashi would regularly force moisturizer on them. Shouta cared more about figure out the root stress, itâs not that Hizashi didnât, he just didnât know how to, so he settled for pampering you.
âItâs dead.â Hizashi huffed from the bedroom door. âObliterated, actually.â
âHmm?â You looked up from your phone, you hadnât been reading any of the messages in the chat for a good few minutes and just let your eyes unfocus instead. You yanked your thumb from your mouth and hid it below the table like a child caught with a sweet theyâd snuck from the kitchen before dinner, you knew he saw.
âYour nail.â Hizashi gently patted the end of his hair with his special fluffy towel that heâd convinced you and Shouta he needed to control his frizz (which he didnât have) and padded towards the kitchen table where you sat. He placed a kiss on the top of your head as he strode around you.
âWhatâs up, love?â he murmured softly, leaning against the table next you. One of his legs propped up on the chair to your right and leaned down to look at your phone screen.
âThis is going to go horribly.â You breathed, panicked as you set your phone down on the table.
âYou donât know that.â Hizashi looked back up at you and smiled sweetly.
âNot everyoneâs mom is a cool rocker lady in her 60âs who lives in the heart of downtown still and is fully supportive of her childâs bisexual polyamorous relationship with their childhood best friend and an ex-small-town girl with an ultra-conservative family.â You huffed out in one long breath.
âThat was oddly specific.â He chuckled softly. âWhat about Shoâs parents, theyâre conservative?â
âYeah, but his parents are at least polite and send us both Christmas gifts every year and keep any and all of their shittier opinions to themselves because they want their son to be happy.â You groaned dramatically, dropping your head onto his thigh, using the extra meat to muffle the noise.
âY-your-â Hizashiâs leg twitched from the vibrations of your groan. âYour parents want you to be happy too, Y/n.â
You groaned into his thigh, trying to explain the difference between your parentâs and Shoutaâs. Hizashi laughed and gently grabbed the side of your face, lifting it so you were no longer muffled by his leg.
âTry again.â He instructed.
âThey only want me to be happy if it fits into their rigid frame of what acceptable happiness looks like.â You explained again.
âHey,â Hizashi ran his thumb back and forth across your cheek, âhave faith, baby. Theyâre your family, they love you.â
If only heâd been right.
Shouta was the know it all, the one that way always right. Hizashi on the other hand was quiet used to being the one that was not always right, he had no hubris about his intelligence what-so-ever. So much so that sometimes you and Shouta had to remind him that he was intelligent and offered a lot of knowledge and wisdom in many many ways: public speaking, social relationships, radio scripting, he spoke two languages fluently as well. However, this one-time Hizashi wished dearly that he had been right, that he was an insufferable know it all who never got it wrong. It was a different twisted feeling in his gut, sitting the back seat watching you try to keep it together in the front seat, than the usual mild embarrassment that faded after a couple of minutes when he was wrong about something. That was damn near luxurious compared to the painful knot tearing into his stomach.
The silence in the car was so dense and absolute that it almost physically gagged Hizashi and Shouta, the two of them were too afraid to say anything and break it. It felt as though the heavy silence was keeping you from breaking, as if it were applying enough pressure at all sides to keep the thin veneer of composure you were managing together. You felt it too, along with the heavy weight that was nearly crushing your chest, the thick doughy lump clogging your throat and the tremble in your lips. You took a deep breath, it getting caught halfway and freezing in to an unrealized sob that you pushed down.
Shouta huffed and pulled off to the side of the dark country road, slowing into the gravelly shoulder. He turned in his seat to face you, undoing his seat belt so he could fully turn his body. You kept your eyes out the window, trying with all your might not to let the tears that clouded your eyes to fall. You knew youâd need to cry about this, about your parents and their conditional love. You knew that this was something you would need to deal with, but you didnât want to at this moment. You wanted to go home, take some sleeping medication and go to sleep, you wanted to wait until the open wound in your chest had stopped bleeding to begin treating it.
Your father was being facetious about your living arrangement as usual, whenever he was faced with Shouta and Hizashi his first reaction was to constantly point out that fact that you were a woman living with two men and that if they werenât gay that one of them should have married you by now. Shouta and Hizashi had taken these comments like water rolling off of a duckâs back, Hizashi even grinned and mumbled something about your father tempting him. You could have kept your mouth shut, you could have kept your cool but Shoutaâs hand was brushing against your thigh and you felt it tense into an annoyed fist. Something about Shoutaâs minimal reaction lit a fire in you, more like an explosion. It was a surge of very sudden and very ferocious courage that lasted a split second and no longer. Youâd practically shouted it, the ringing in your ears drowning whatever words youâd used out.
You were met with complete and utter silence, shock and fear thick in the air. Youâd almost believed for a moment that you hadnât done it, that youâd just shouted randomly and just scared everyone. But then your dad stood up, his shocked open mouth flattening out into a hard straight line, this jaw swelling as he clenched it.
âW-what?â he growled, stepping back from the table as if you were a threat.
You were ready to backtrack, you were so ready to just laugh and pretend you were fucking with him. But you spared a glance to Shouta and Hizashi, their faces pale and guilty. They, regardless of what you could say in an attempt to cover up what youâd just said, were basically admitting to it already. You instinctively shrunk back into your chair like youâd do when you were younger at the dinner table whenever something uncomfortable would come up. You could tell everyone was at a loss for words, the difference was that you were scared and at a loss for words, Shouta and Hizashi were shocked and at a loss for words and your father was steaming angry and at a loss for words.
Your mother, who had always been the least confrontational of the two turned away from you and almost in a show of disgust immediately went to comfort your grandmother. It was as if you were an afront to goodness, an act of moral atrocity being committed in front of them. Your father began to barrage you with passive aggressive questions and accusations towards Shouta and Hizashi. He was trying to understand while at the same time refusing to give you a chance to explain. You stopped listening after the first few sentences that came out of his mouth, falling back into an internal monologue filled with regret. He must have said something exceptionally terrible because in an instant Shouta was standing, his arm reaching out to separate you from him and he was shouting. Shouta never shouted, he barely voiced any form of annoyance or frustration in general when it wasnât a learning moment for his students, but here he was on his feet volleying harsh word with your father.
Hizashi, you realized was attempting damage control, his hands raised and his voice lower than either of the other two menâs. You blinked back into the present, as noise filled your ears, you mother was crying, your father and Shouta were shouting and Hizashi was rambling panicked. You took a couple of deep breaths and stood up on shaky legs, gripping Shoutaâs protective arm for support, and looked your father in the eyes. He faltered at the direct eye contact and you saw an opening where there was less shouting to contend with.
âStop,â you hissed through gritted teeth. âthis is why I never wanted to tell you! Why I was perfectly okay with living away from you guys for the rest- This is why I havenât been home.â
Your mother gasped a ragged, tear-filled breath. Sheâd expressed before that sheâd wished she could see you more often, that sheâs noticed youâd been coming home less and less. Youâd been good at covering it up, saying you were busy with work and simply couldnât get the time off. You knew that what youâd just said hurt her, not in the way it should have. It hurt her because youâd just told them it was their fault that you felt unwelcomed here and not because you were afraid of your own parents.
âHow long?â she breathed.
âThree years.â You sniffed, hand tightening around Shoutaâs wrist.
âTHREE?! THR-â your father bellowed in disbelief. âFor three years theyâve been brainwashing and forcing themselves on you?!â
Suddenly you understood why Shouta had leapt up, you had just now caught up with the conversation. Red hot anger flared up in your chest, the mere insinuation that you were being forced in anyway to be with your partners filled you with utter rage.
âNo!â You growled, for the first time in your life matching your fatherâs volume. âFor three years theyâve been by my side, showing up at the hospital when I got hurt at work, celebrating my promotions at the agency, helping me make a home that I feel safe in and actually fucking caring about me!â
There was silence again, this one was thin but not light in anyway, like it was a delicate thread barely holding a great weight from falling and crushing you.
âWe care for you.â You mother said darkly.
âNo,â you swallowed hard, âyou havenât for a long time.â
âGet out.â You father growled.
Hizashi was already moving, grabbing your coats from the back of the chairs and pulling Shouta by the arm away from the table. It took you a good long second to move, even then it was because Shouta latched onto your shoulders and Hizashi tugged him along.
âIâm sorry.â Shouta whispered, his hand finding yours in your lap. You kept your eyes focused out the window at the pitch-black fields with barely visible for off golden dots of light. You couldnât talk.
You heard Hizashi shuffling around in the back seat, scooting closer to you and his hand joined Shoutaâs, pulling up onto the storage compartment between the seats. It was cracking, that veneer.
âItâs not your fault.â Hizashi murmured.
You sniffed hard, biting int you bottom lip. Of course, it wasnât your fault that your parents didnât accept you, that you werenât good enough or right for them, that you werenât on par with the apparent morality of the rest of the family. It wasnât your fault that they were backwards people with terrible ideas of how a person should be. It still didnât hurt any less that you couldnât meet those backwards ideals, that you couldnât be the right kind of person for them.
âY/n,â Shouta whispered, gently grabbing your chin and turning your face towards them.
They were looking at you the way a mother looks at her crying baby in the first few months, the desperate need to connect and nurture glowing in their eyes. They were filled with worry, with pity, with understanding but also, with fear. No doubt, what had just happened had been traumatic for them too. Looking into their emotion filled eyes you felt that veneer shatter, falling away and unleashing that mournful sobbing that had been trapped inside.
Shouta pulled you towards him, holding you firmly to his chest placing his head atop yours. You vaguely felt Hizashi disappear from you for a moment, but you were too preoccupied with the trembling muscles seizing violently in your chest. Then you felt him sliding in behind you, only now realizing heâd stepped out of the car and slide in through your door as he shut it behind him. He draped himself over you rubbing circles into your back.
âItâs not your fault.â He murmured into your hair over and over again.
At first you didnât really focus on it, thinking it idle words of comfort but the more he said the more it sunk in. The more your realized that you were holding onto the hope that there was something about this, about you, that you could fix. With every repetition of those four words that false hope chipped away and that heavy weight in your chest began to fall away. It was still painful, it still felt like you had a pen festering wound that youâd never fully heal from, but it also felt lighter. It felt as though a burden youâd believed was yours to bear was suddenly the responsibility of the many.
âYou donât have to change,â Shouta whispered softly as your sobs ebbed into weak beaths, âthey do.â
That reignited some tears, to hear what you needed to said so plainly. Shouta was good at that, putting those intangible thoughts and feelings into plain words. You cried until the tears and the worry and the late hour caught up with you, until your head felt heavy and waterlogged and you slumped backwards into Hizashi sniffing. You cried until your wavering breaths evened out and your tired mind fell to silence. Hizashi pulled you into his lap and cradled you against him like a parent holding and oversized child, running his hand slowly through your hair.
When you awoke you were swaddled thoroughly with the fuzzy blanket from the couch Shouta hated because it shed and sandwiched between the two men who snored away. As you blinked in the early morning light that just barely peaked through the blinds you noticed the red rims around Hizashiâs eyes and deep-set circles under Shoutaâs as if they both been awake all night. Shouta was still in his dress shirt and Hizashi had stripped down to his boxers and pulled his hair back into a sloppy bun. Neither were properly snoring which told they hadnât been asleep for very long.
You tried to ignore what had happened last night, what had led to the heavy feeling in your head and crusty dry eyes and tight cheeks. You tried to pretend that they had stayed up for work, that they you had swaddled yourself up in the blanket nor because you were sad but because you just wanted to be cozy. Then you heard a phone vibrate on the nightstand and any and all work towards denial washed away as you dreaded checking it. It could just be a work thing, it could be Hizashiâs phone even though heâd never had it on silent even once since youâve known him. It could have been Shoutaâs vibrating against the wooden table even though you could see his slightly peeking out of his back pocket.
You sighed and sat up, daring the smallest of glances at the nightstand. It was your phone screen that was lit up, several notifications on the screen. You groaned and laid back down, scrunching your eyes shut begging for sleep to suddenly and miraculously take you. It buzzed again and you huffed. Fine. Youâll check it. I guess someone could be dying. I do stop that from happening for a living.
You very cautiously crawled over Hizashi and reached to get your phone, electing not to look at it until you settled back between your boys. You scrolled though your notifications, weather, news, a work email, a second email from a contact that made your blood run cold and three missed calls and two answering machine messages from the same contact. Grandma. Your hands trembled at you unlocked your phone and typed int your voicemail password. You held the phone up to you ear and listen to the first message which was more or less just some frustrated grandma noises and mumbles about the inconvenience of technology, followed briefly by a set of hellos. If you hadnât been ready to shit yourself, youâd have laughed. Then the second played and you had to take a deep breath to hold yourself together enough to keep listening.
âHello? Hello? Y/n? Oh shi- well this is just ridiculous. Y/n, I donât know if you can hear me, or maybe this is your answering machine, I donât know I canât hear too well but-â her soft worn voice said into the phone, âI want you to know that I love you. Your parents love you too, even if they did not act like it tonight.â
She paused and your eyes welled up with tears, a lump forming in your throat. It was this strange feeling of pure sadness but also happiness and relief.
âThose boys,â she continued, âprobably would have killed your father last night if they had the chance. Iâm not saying I get it, but they sure do love you, sweetheart. I quite like the blond one he is very-â
The message cut off and the automated voice asked you what you wanted to do with the message. All you could do was laugh, laugh and cry. You were still sad, still in pain, but it was already starting to feel less life-ending.
âHey,â Shouta mumbled blearily, âSâokay. Iâm here.â
He wrapped an arm around you and pulled you close, trying to pull himself from sleep. You hugged him back and massaged the back of his scalp gently.
âListen to this.â You sniffed.
He nodded and you pressed repeat, listening to the whole second message through again. You watched as a smile spread across his sleepy lips and he laughed softly. He pouted suddenly when it ended, his eyebrows pulling together as much as his drowsy state would let them.
âWhat?â you asked, worried heâd heard something youâd missed.
âWhy does she like Zash more?â he grumbled, barely awake now.
You smiled and curled into him, electing not to answer knowing that he wouldnât like being told that Hizashi is more sociable than him. Besides, you smiled to yourself, heâd be asleep in a matter of seconds.
You were still hurt; you still had that big open wound in your chest. But with Shouta and Hizashi at your side you knew youâd heal; you knew theyâd give you anything you needed. You knew that your grandmother was right, that these two boys loved you very much.

We say we're friends, we play pretend (1/2)
Pairing: Charlie Gillespie x Fem reader
Summary: Charlie and Y/N were best friends and a couple as teens, after their breakup they meet again 4 years later on the bootcamp of JATP and have to work together. Will something else happen or they are just friends?
Charlie must have imagined something like this could happen. Since Kenny discovered her 5 years ago, she has been a really close friend to the director, participating in some way or another in almost all his projects.
In front of him after years, Y/N Y/L, his childhood best friend and ex-girlfriend. The young actor is not going to admit that he saw every single one of her projects or how moved he was by her in each one of them, many times even thinking of maybe sending her a little message saying the incredible job she did.
But he never found the courage.
Itâs weird to remember how he spent most of his life next to the woman, now one of the top youth artists with multiple musicals and movies on her hits list. They always had a strong bond, every single day together. Sleepovers, music classes, dancing classes, homework, parties, movie nights, hockey, illness days, pretty much everything. At the age of 15 they began a very sweet and innocent relationship that ended at 18 when Y/N moved to New York to work in her first leading role.
The break up was on good terms but painful, so painful that both preferred to lose contact completely than to have the other from time to time opening the wound again and again.
And there she was. As beautifil as ever, speaking happily with Kenny while Madison and Owen jump up and down, Jeremy smiles and Charlie looks like he wants to throw up.
âY/N Y/L, my golden star. She is the official composer of the soundtrack, and she will be supporting you throughout the album process as well as helping Paul and me in other creative aspects, I know she is the same age as some of you but she has a lot of experience in this and all the necessary preparation so don't hesitate to get all the knowledge you can out of her."
Everyone introduces themselves until the guitarist is the only one left, luckily for him, heâs in voice rest these two weeks so he literally cannot speak.
They both look nervous but the moment their eyes meet their complicity comes out and both smile slightly.
âHeâs Charlie, he is in voice rest but we are fans of yours. We cried yesterday watching your last musical, it was just brilliant." Owen lets out hardly breathing, Y/N turns with a smile to see the Canadian boy who wants to kill his friend and then commit suicide.
âThank you! This is going to be such an interesting experience.â The singer murmurs as she winks at Charlie.
2 hours later they had both been avoiding each other, Y/N writing in a corner while the band and Kenny discuss costumes with Soyon, in which at least half an hour has been wasted trying to understand what Charlie is trying to say with the few words he writes with an apple pencil on his ipad in his horrible handwritting.
Y/N gets frustrated and goes to where they are, approaching behind Charlie's shoulder to see the iPad. She quickly identifies the two words, one so crossed out that it looks like a doodle, but years copying each other's homework pays off.
"He's trying to say that if Luke isn't going to wear bandanas, at least consider wearing beanies." The young woman says as she leans on the shoulder of who was her first love.
Charlie freezes at their proximity, blushing a little at the feeling of being close after so long. Luckily his castmates don't realize it because all their attention is on her.
âYou are just good for everything huh? Even deciphering hieroglyphs." Owen comments, smiling at her and winking exaggeratedly to make her laugh.
Charlie can't help but feel insecure with the situation. It could be a friendly thing but If Owen really tries to flirt with her, he doesn't know how he would react. Is sad enough not having her in his life anymore, having her as his best friend's girlfriend would just be too painful.
Now, he knows heâs exaggerating, and a lot. But he has to do something about it. Better safe than sorry.
He stretches his neck to meet the eyes of his ex-girlfriend, who is now only inches away. She quickly gets flustered, but hides it pretty well. The problem is that he knows every gesture perfectly and sees through her mask.
âWh- What, Gillespie?â She manages to say, Charlie canât help a smile seeing the way she still reacts towards him.
When you know a person completely, every facet, every gesture, every peculiarity, speaking without words is as natural as breathing. And they had both forgotten how amazing it feels to have someone in your life who is this compatible and magnetic.
They start a conversation, she answers to who secretly still believes as her person while he continues making gestures and mimics that no one else understands, writing a word from time to time to make the talk flow better.
"I know. Hey, it's not my fault! So you excuse yourself with the âcan't talkâ thing huh? how convenient. Yeah, Ok, I will. I said I will!" Her words are the only thing that they manage to get out of the conversation that the secret ex-couple is having, since no matter how much attention they pay to him, they have no idea how Y/N manages to decipher it.
"I have no idea what's going on but I'll take it as a miracle, I was just going to suggest ignoring Charlie these 2 weeks." Jeremy jokes, everyone nods their heads.
âI mean, itâs still a good option.â Madison replies.
The 14 days go by quickly, and with the former couple spending time together daily, rehearsing Charlie's guitar solos together, with Y/N translating his horrible scribbles, or sometimes simply being close to each other enjoying the company, absentmindedly placing their hand on the other's leg or their forehead on their shoulder for a few seconds during the breaks.
Basically the whole team has noticed the flirtatious smiles and the looks, but Charlie was the weakest rival of both and the one who could release some information about it, and without being able to speak they basically ran out of an informant, since the young singer didnât let go a word about her unexpected chemistry with the guitarist except the typical âwe are just good friendsâ.
But without a doubt the energies began to multiply on Monday when Charlie arrived with the green light to be able to speak and start singing in rehearsals. Madison couldn't attend the first few hours because she was at school, so Y/N was going to cover her so the boys could practice.
âThe first on the list is Finally Free, the place where we are going to record it only gave us two weeks from now so it will have to be one of the priorities. For the first rehearsal just vibe with the song and weâll discover where to go from there. Oh, and good luck keeping up with my golden star, youâll need it."
Y/N starts the first verse on the keyboard, and gets up to sing the chorus in the center, trying to ignore Charlie and looking up at Jeremy. She hadnât heard him sing for a couple of years, but the same butterflies appear in her stomach and she knows that she will melt if she looks into his eyes.
Unfortunately for her, Kenny doesn't have the same plan, and just before the second verse ends he tells her to walk over to Charlie, who immediately smiles and sings the pre-chorus with much more enthusiasm. The energy they radiate floods the place, both getting closer and closer. By the time the bridge arrives, their foreheads are practically against each other, their lips only an inch apart, and with a confidence and comfort while singing to each other that makes all those who suspected that there was something between them now practically sure.
Luckily there are only Jeremy, Kenny, Owen and Paul in the room, who decide to play a game of divide and conquer now that the snitch part of the equation can speak.
âY/N, can you come with me for a moment? I have a new idea for âWowâ and a fresh pair of eyes is just what I need.â Paul says, sacrificing himself for the greater good.
âYeah, of course, Iâll be right back.â The singer takes the opportunity to leave this staring game with Charlie and quickly walks away from the guitarist, who winks at her in a flirting way in response.
The moment they walk out the door, everyone turns to see Charlie, who has no idea what they're up to.
âWhat?â
"After what just happened you just can't keep pretending nothing's happening. Man, that was more intense than the whole Troyella moments during all three movies." Kenny pretends to be offended for a second and then nods.
"I have never seen anything like this in all my years of career."
âYeah dude it was electric.â Owen replies, smirking.
âSheâs my person.â Charlie mumbles.
If heâs being honest with himself, deep down he always knew she was the only one for him. But that realization was freaking scary. What's next if the only person for you has already turned the page? gave up without a fight? what's left?
"What?" The three ask in unison, and Charles begins to sing like a bird.
âWe grew up together and then we lost the way. Like in those romantic movies where just everyone knows they belong together except the childhood best friends and then they end up ruining their lives by being in denial.â
âFrom what I saw getting back on track shouldn't be too difficult, Charlie. I assure you that whatever you feel she feels it too. Her eyes donât lie." Jeremy tries to reason with him.
âLeave your teen problems behind. You are old enough to decide what you want and find a way to make it work. But you have to stop pretending that nothing is happening first." Owen scolds his friend.
âDo you love her?â Jer asks.
âThat answer is always going to be yes, I just could never stop loving her even If I tried. And I did.â He really did. The surprise he got when the second he had her close to him his heart began to beat like crazy and all he wanted was to hug her and fix everything. It was as if when seeing her eyes time hadnât passed, as if only the day before theyâd been goofing around together. That bond is so big that he doesnât believe itâs possible to break.
âThen do something about it, bro! Go get your girl back!â Jeremy advises while Kenny smiles.
âYeah man, itâs âNow or neverâ like her song, and I guess ours too now? Since she wrote it for Sunset Curve? Well, anyway, itâs like our song says.â Owen exclaims excitedly.
âOhhh, musical inspiration, let me try. âGet up, get out, relight that sparkâ.â Jeremy sings to Charlie.
âJer, you are a genius. If you think about it wake up is actually a pretty good soundtrack song for this situation. âIt's not what you lost, It's what you'll gain raising your voice in the rainâ.â
They both keep singing the song until they reach the bridge, Charlie tries to look frustrated but a slight smile escapes his face.
They are right, he still hasn't lost this fight.

Me and You
(Luke Patterson x Reader)Â (Julie and the Phantoms)
Word Count: 1.6K
~Master~
A/N: Alrighty! So this is my first time writing for JATP! I tried yâall, I did, let me know what you think and if I should write more at some point cause Iâm curious now lmao.Â
This was mainly written for me, Iâll be honest.Â
@hyperion-moonbabe-art3mis YOUR MOVE...
***
The constant strumming of Lukeâs guitar as he practiced kept pulling your attention away from the book in front of you, one you snagged from Julieâs bookshelf. You were almost done with it, but you preferred to read in silence, something you couldnât do with Mr. Rockstar over there.
âMust you practice when Iâm trying to read?â You groaned, tossing your head back on the couch you were laying across as you stared up at the ceiling.
Luke just laughed, strumming a chord on his guitar that heâd been trying out for ages now. âMust you read when Iâm trying to practice?â You shot him a look but Luke only smirked at you, making you only slightly annoyed.
âYou always do this.â You said, rolling off the couch and coming to lean over the piano. âEver since we were young, it was always you playing when I read.â Luke could tell you werenât mad at him or upset from the small smile on your face as you picked up the paper in front of him. âNew song?â
Luke nodded, leaning on his elbow on the piano as he looked at you. Your eyes were reading the paper, slowly mouthing the words as your lips slowly curled up in a smile. Luke licked his lips, never looking away from you as he cleared his throat. âWanna give it a go?â
You had to keep from laughing at Lukeâs offer. âThanks, but Iâm good. I think Iâll leave the singing to Julie and you.â you started to walk away but Luke grabbed your hand before you could, giving you a dimply smile that you knew you couldnât say no to.
âCome on, Y/N. I havenât heard you play and sing in a while.â He pushed the sheet music towards you. âJust give it a go.â You took a deep breath, staring at him as he squeezed your hand. You hated playing in front of people, and Luke knew that, but he also knew you were comfortable with him. If you were going to sing in front of anyone, it would be him.
You sighed, nodding your head and smiling. Luke playfully cheered as you laughed. You grabbed the paper, sitting down in front of the piano as Luke sat next to you, holding his guitar so it wouldnât hit you. Â âYou sure about this?â you asked, seeing Luke roll his eyes. He took your hands and put them on the piano.
âPlay.â He said, nudging you gently. Before you could doubt yourself, you started playing the first few notes of Stand Tall. Luke watched you play, a smile budding at his face as he listened. It had been so long since he heard you play, even longer since he heard you sing. He missed it.
Luke waited, hearing you play the intro again and again, but you never sang. Instead, you stopped playing, letting out a small sigh as your hands fell to your side. âI canât.â
âItâs just us.â He whispered, grabbing your hand again. He brought your hands to the piano, placing his on top. Goosebumps tickled your skin as you turned your head, finding Luke closer than he was before. His eyes met yours as he pressed your fingers down, hearing the notes play as you both stayed looking at each other. When you didnât start singing, Luke played the intro again, and again as he smiled at you. âItâs just me and you, you can do it.â
You nodded, finally looking away as you felt Lukeâs hand remove themselves, but he didnât scoot back. You took a deep breath. âDonât blink, No I donât want to miss itâ you sang out beautifully as Lukeâs heart soared, hearing your slight wobble before you found your confidence and your smile slowly grew on your face. âOne thing and itâs back to the beginning, âcause everything is rushing in fast, keep going on, never look back,â Luke joined you in the next verse, helping you with the song as he played his guitar. Neither one of your smiles faded until the last notes rang out in the air, ending the song and leaving you both in a perfect silence.
Luke pushed himself off the piano bench you were sharing, spinning around before reaching forwards and grabbing your hands, pulling you up as well. âThat was amazing. Y/N!â He cried out, wrapping his arms around your waist and spinning you in the air. You laughed at his actions and threw your arms around his neck, one of your hands finding his hair when you buried your head into his shoulder. When Luke finally put you down, your bodies were pressed together and Lukeâs hold on you didnât loosen.
You were well aware of Lukeâs hands holding you close and your own that threaded so neatly in his hair. His eyes met yours and your breath hitched. âThank you.â you whispered, seeing Lukeâs eyes flicker down briefly before locking on yours again.
âI knew you could do it.â He brought a hand up to cup your cheek. You knew that look in his eye. He leaned in, pulling your face closer as you let your eyes close and your lips hit. It took years and even dying for you to manage to kiss Luke, but it was worth it. He kissed you deeply, pouring every feeling he had into it as you did the same. When you pulled away, Lukeâs hand stayed on your cheek, both of you never leaving each otherâs embrace.
You furrowed your brows, biting your lip as Luke asked what was wrong. âYou like me?â you asked.
Luke was confused. âWhy is that a question?â He laughed and his smile never left his face.
You, however, had no clue what to say. âI just- I canât believe-â You stuttered, pulling your gaze away from him. âI never wanted to admit my feelings for you and you not return them.â You admitted. Luke moved your head so you were looking at him again. âI couldnât handle that.â
âYou didnât think I like you?â
âDo you?â you laughed out, trying to hold in your insecurities.
Luke quickly caught on to how you were thinking, believing there was no way that he truly liked you. âY/N, Iâve been in love you since we were 14 and you spilled your lunch all over me at my house.â
Your eyes went wide, heat moving up your cheeks as you closed your eyes tight, taking a moment before opening them again. âThatâs when you realized you were in love with me?!â you cried out as Luke and you burst into laughs, yours out of embarrassment and his out of amusement.
You tried to hide your face, but Luke wouldnât let you, moving your hands away from your face so he could see you again. âNo, I wasnât smart enough for that.â He said and you snorted, fully believing him. âI figured that out later, but it was when I started thinking of you as maybe more than a friend.â
You nodded your head, tangling your hands with his. âIf it makes you feel any better, Iâve been in love with you about that time too.â You admitted as Luke let out a sigh of relief, leaning forward to meet your lips again, but before he could, you were interrupted.
âWoah.â Reggie said Alex and him popped into the room, standing on the other side of the piano as Luke and you subconsciously took a step apart.
âOh, donât stop on our account.â Alex said jokingly as he leaned forwards on the piano, making you both share embarrassed looks.
âWe werenât-â
âYeah, we were just-â
Luke and you said at the same time, but neither of you had a real excuse. Instead, you just looked at him and shrugged.
âWeâre dating.â
Alex and Reggie laughed at Luke and your perfectly timed proclamation. âYeah, itâs about time.â Alex joked again as you rolled your eyes.
âYeah, it only took what, 4, 5 years?â Reggie asked rhetorically as Luke forced a smile, tossing the pillows that were on the couch at them both as you laughed. They both caught the pillows, but only after it smacked them in the faces.
âAlright, alright!â Alex said loudly over everyoneâs laughter. You quieted down, cheeks hurting from smiling so much. âSeriously guys, weâre happy for you both.â
âYeah,â Reggie continued, nodding. âYou guys are good for each other.â He admitted and you felt Lukeâs arm swing over your shoulder and bring you into his side and kissing your temple. You giggled, wrapping your arms around Luke just in time for Julie to walk in and see.
âNo way!â She shouted, glancing between you and Luke. You smiled at her, knowing she knew all about your crush on Luke for a while now. âYouâre dating!â Her reaction made you laugh and you wish you were able to hug her, but since you were a ghost, it wasnât possible. Instead, you settled for watching her being excited and feeling Lukeâs chest rumble as you hugged him.
âI think Julie wins best reaction.â You whispered to Luke as he nodded, leaning down to peck your lips as Julie squealed louder.
âOkay!â You called over her, a small chuckle in your words as she quieted down but still remained giddy. âYou guys have to practice!â you reminded them, seeing nods around the room as you moved away from Luke, holding his hand until you couldnât reach him anymore and fell onto the couch.
Everyone moved to their instruments, but Luke, who still had his guitar on him from playing earlier, just watched you, seeing you and Julie exchange silent cheers before the singer was finally ready to practice. You picked up your book, beginning to read again as the band practiced. You kept sneaking glances up at Luke, who was definitely still looking at you. The music did make it difficult to focus on reading, but with your boyfriend preforming right in front of you, who would want to concentrate on reading anyway?

Under the table at the school library, I couldn't stop thinking about y/n and yeah I uhh did that

Yes... but only when I've been a bad boy
83. Have you ever fantasised about someone else during sex?
Once, the first time, I imagined she was y/n
84. If y/n caught you masturbating, would you stop or would you finish?
I would do whatever she asked me too but I know she'd likely wanna watch me finish for her

95. Do you like dirty talk?

96. Do you prefer one night stands or longer-term sexual partners?
Long term
97. Do you prefer to be on top or bottom?
Bottom!
98.Rough or romantic?
Romantic
99. Quickie or marathon session?

100. What's the best thing about our sex life?
Awww, that we have complete faith in one another I don't worry about you while I'm gone and you know you don't have to worry about me, so when we get together again I get to have my perfectly smutty girly that I love ever so much, that and it's fun when the boys ask where I get my brusies from and I get to say there hikis from my sexy girlfriend, even if they are in usually places.

I've been actively blogging for more than six months, even though I've had a tumblr account for ten years. I started reading One Direction (specifically Larry) fanfiction about the same time.
Originally, I read exclusively canon compliant fiction--I was hungry for industry insider, what-could-have-happened narratives. But I've slowly branched out into other genres. I find fanfic--good fanfic--super calming. When I've had too much stunting, too much noise, I grab a fanfic and immerse myself. So I thought it was time to do a post about my favorites. Keep in mind, I'm terrible at cataloging, and I have over 150 bookmarks on my A03 Account, so this is by no means an exhaustive list.
I'm not including the classics like Tired, Tired Sea and Escapade. While I do love both of those (so well written), because a lot of people know about those already.
My all time favorites are by @helloamhere
1. The Multipicity of Powers - https://archiveofourown.org/works/28580229
Maybe in another universe he isnât different. Maybe he hadnât been given an impossible choice. Maybe he wouldnât have lost everything and broken everything and then fallen impossibly, irrevocably in love with the first next thing that was kind. Maybe in that universe he doesnât feel like heâs never breathing, always pretending, teaching the kids even though they all have to learn alone, trying hard not to read the headlines, and so afraid, every day, that he wonât be a good enough teammate to the superhero he canât live without. He knows that love isnât supposed to feel this way, slid secret under your skin like a surgical razor, an invisible war held close over the tender vein that keeps you alive. On the other hand, Louis wonders, had he ever known how to do it any other way?
Maybe thereâs a universe where he doesnât have to keep all his secrets on the inside.
But this isnât that universe.
//an X-Men AU.
Me: I never thought I'd love a super hero 1D cross over, but this is so well done. The backstory, the pacing, the characterization, the friendship. Read it.
2. Saving Symphony Hall and it's prequel Night Out - https://archiveofourown.org/works/12633921
âI think I have an idea,â Louis said. Slowly, and reluctantly, but with a growing sense of the inevitable. âGod damnit, I think I have a really good idea.â
âOh christ, that's the problem-solving face,â Babs said. âLast time we saw that face, he sold a company.â
âWait, what?â Zayn asked.
âRight place, right time,â Louis said. âAlso, fuck my life,â
âWhat?â Zayn repeated. Niall patted his hand.
âI usually just roll with whatever Louis is about to do,â he said. âItâs better for us all.â
âThatâs the attitude,â said Louis, âIâll tell you tomorrow. Tonight, I need to do some research. Zayn, give me your number. Iâm gonna save our symphony.â
Me: The best sex scene I've ever read is in the prequel Night Out. Sexy, but tender. I love the characterizations in this duo--ABO but not traditional. Doesn't feel out of character.
3. Just Let Me -https://archiveofourown.org/works/11695350
The party was going well. So well, Niall had already sworn undying love to one multi-tiered chocolate cake, two friendly corgi-poodle mixes, Zaynâs hair, and the entire population of Los Angeles. So well, Zayn had only laughed and ruffled Niallâs hair and not even twitched towards a cigarette. So well, nearly everyone had spilled far past the boundaries of the nightâs original plans, extracting bottles of vodka from the cabinets and losing a lot of clothes. Harry had proclaimed that he was finally going to throw a small and very grownup dinner party and of course here they were three hours later, fifty people half-naked in the pool. Soon to be full-naked, if Louis had to guess. Everybody in LA loved a heated pool. Everybody loved Harry.
Me: I love love love this. Harry is so gentle, and Louis is so stubborn and needy. It's ABO but subtle. I'll read this one again and again. It's comforting.
@HelloAmHere is one of the best writers I know--amazing stuff. I also love their werewolf story, but it's not finished, so I won't link it here.
Other favorites:
1. Seven Up by cherrystreet - https://archiveofourown.org/works/5828539
Very loosely based on the British TV show "The Up Series" and somewhat inspired by the song âSomething I Needâ by Onerepublic, we follow the lives of Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson in an interview setting every seven years. They fall apart and come together, their lives and emotions recorded. Harry calls it a time capsule. Louis calls it a pain in the arse.
Me: Trigger Warning, major character death. I literally SOBBED through the end of this. It was lovely and devastating. So good. But be warned.
2. Light, Spark and Fire series by @greenfeelings
Lifeâs pretty ordinary for Harry. He lives with his best friend, got into university just like heâs planned, and manages to support himself just fine for an unbonded omega. If he sustains that lifestyle by getting paid to help alphas through their rut every now and then, thatâs nothing to be hung up on. Until heâs hired by an alpha that turns everything upside down.
Or, Louis and Zayn run a music label, Liam is Britainâs up-and-coming pop star, Harryâs working on taking Louisâ walls down until he builds his own up, and Niall holds them all together without realising he does.
Me: A nice healthy three-parter. Characters you just want to live with for a while.
3. Relief Next to Me by dolce_piccante - https://archiveofourown.org/works/1117942
AU. What happens when a baker and a graphic designer meet via a very specific Craigslist post? Fate, friendship, food, and maybe more.
Me: This one is super long, so be prepared when you dive in. It's got a lot of lovely bits, and some great smut.
4. 2012 'Verse by ashavahishta - https://archiveofourown.org/series/27601
Me: This is a five-parter and satisfies my love of canon compliant stories. It spans most of 2012 and into 2013, and illustrates the difficulties of Harry and Louis' relationship amid the band success and management disapproval.
5. Love After the End of the World by mercurial-madhouse (writing_practice) - https://archiveofourown.org/works/31251434/chapters/77248901
Society shattered when all electricity suddenly cut off across the globe, plunging the world into darkness. Now, Prometheus Industries is the sole remaining supply of power, a saving grace to those who survived Lights Out. As fugitives in no-manâs land struggling to break into Prometheus HQ, death lurks around every corner for Louis and Zayn. Things get complicated when a routine recon falls apart and Louis collides with Harry and his mates Niall and Liam, survivors with their own agenda.
When staying alive is already a constant battle, the deadliest weakness is to be in love. For Harry and Louis, finding each other sits on top of the endless list of What Else Could Go Wrong.
Me: Really unusual (as far as I can tell) end of the world story. I loved the characterizations of soul mates here at the end of the world.
6. Flightless Bird by audreyhheart - https://archiveofourown.org/works/6401653/chapters/14656807
AU where Louis Tomlinson is a principal dancer with The Royal Ballet. When his rival from ballet school, moody dance prodigy Harry Styles joins the company, old wounds are reopened and old passions reignited. During the company's production of Swan Lake the secret that doomed their love is finally revealed, but will it be too late?
Me: Trigger Warning, sexual assault (by an original character to a major character). This was a little brutal because I hated to see a broken Harry, but it was well written and has a happy ending.
7. Wear It Like A Crown by zarah5 - https://archiveofourown.org/works/1816771/chapters/3900322
AU. As part of a team of fixers hired to handle a gay scandal in Buckingham Palace, Louis expects Prince Harry to be a lot of thingsâmost notably a royally spoilt brat. Never mind that the very same Prince Harry used to star in quite a number of Louis' teenage fantasies.
Me: I loved Louis in this one--actually they are both pretty great. Scratch that, they are ALL pretty great.
8. Shake Me Down by AGreatPerhaps12 - https://archiveofourown.org/works/3331958/chapters/7285322
Harry's new to college, fresh out of Catholic school and conversion therapy camp, and Louis runs the campus LGBTQIA organization.
Me: I don't like the self-hate here, but it was necessary for the story and H comes around. Found family vibe.
9. Gods & Monsters by Velvetoscar - https://archiveofourown.org/works/2090982/chapters/4550871
The instructions were simple: seduce and destroy Harry Styles. Not once did they discuss the option of Louis actually falling in love. So, naturally, that's exactly what he did.
Me: I loved Harry in this one. Louis gets there. I don't like Liam, but I don't think you're supposed to. Zayn is great.
10. Own the Scars by crinkle-eyed-boo (KimmieRocks) - https://archiveofourown.org/series/1010796
Louis has never felt like he was good enough: for his stepdad, for his life-long best friend, for the life he's supposed to want. After an accident that nearly costs him his life, Louis' parents send him to rehab where heâs forced to face his demons. On the long and difficult road to recovery, Louis must confront the truths heâs been avoiding about his future, his relationships, and his sense of self-worth. Because before he can love anyone else, heâs got to learn how to love himself first.
Me: Harry is lovely in this one. Trigger warning, substance abuse and near death.
11. Wild Love by purpledaisy - https://archiveofourown.org/series/1030904
AU: Two best friends try to date each other for forty days. It's supposed to be fun until emotions make it complicated.
Me: I loved this way more than I thought I would. It's lovely and messy and I love it.
12. Victorian Boy by audreyhheart - https://archiveofourown.org/users/Rosann1986/readings?page=6
Victorian AU. Harry the virgin Duke of Somerset knows little of love, while Louis the sly Duke of Warwick knows too much. When the two dukes come together for the Bilsdale fox hunt in York, Harry finds himself drawn into Louis' bed. But when secrets from Louis' dark past come to light, Harry fears that the fox isn't the only one being hunted.
Me: Historical fiction I didn't intend to love. I LOVE Harry in this one. LOTS of smut, so be warned.
13. Keep Me Closer by zanni_scaramouche - https://archiveofourown.org/works/30752633
Louis expects Harry to react poorly, maybe even file a formal complaint and thatâs gonna suck ass but Louis wonât say shit cause he knows he deserves it, so he prepares an apology before Harryâs even turned around.
What he doesnât expect is Harry to fucking drop.
Me: lovely, protective Louis just trying to do the right thing.
14. Turning Page by purpledaisy for SockstheDog
https://archiveofourown.org/works/11826345
AU: Harry Styles tries to get lost in a place heâs never been. Â Louis Tomlinson has been perfecting the art of being lost for years. What they donât expect to find is each other.
Me: sweet love story. Niall owns a bar, and is pretty great.
15. Freedom Always Comes With a Price by Cyantific - https://archiveofourown.org/works/30278514/chapters/74624262
A shared dream brings them together onto the X-factor stage, but one decision changes Harry and Louisâ lives overnight. Thrust into a world of instant stardom, they're forced to live a lie to sustain their dreams, but years of living in the shadows and under strict management takes its toll.
With the bands impending hiatus, thereâs no better time for change, so they think.
Desperate for a solution, they turn to an unlikely source with a radical plan. An unfortunate accident sets everything in motion, but not how they intended, leaving Louisâ memories altered, Harry broken-hearted and full of regret.
Can Harry figure out a way to fix everything? Will he even want to once he sees how Louis moved on after the hiatus? Will Louis ever find out the truth of their past and can he forgive Harry after all this time?
In the end, two friends find out that memories are elusive, trust is everything and love is the only antidote.
Me: Heartbreaking when they lose each other, but really good in the end.
16. Little Technicolor Things by scary_crow - https://archiveofourown.org/works/6025519/chapters/13821628
Louis is a poor writer and recent university graduate, depressed, anxious, and living in London when he meets Harry, an artist with a secret who likes to paint sunrises and pretty boys from California.
17. Hold You Now by solvetheminourdreams - https://archiveofourown.org/works/30253536/chapters/74556744
Three years ago, Harry Styles said goodbye to communications consultancy firm McQuiston Worldwide, leaving a life of travel and agency PR behind. When he accompanies his best friend to a family wedding across the Atlantic, he'll be forced to reopen old wounds and face his pastâone that no one wants to hash out, but may just have to.
Me: Niall is great. They almost miss each other in this one, and you just want to bash them over the head. But they figure it out.
18. At Risk, I Fold by clare328 - https://archiveofourown.org/works/26542480
2015 is a stream of hotel rooms and whisky on the rocks, tired glances and touching hands under tables. Itâs the bears and the bees under a rainbow sky, and Harry and Louis have to figure out how to grow up together, instead of apart.
Me: A canon compliant fic that feels like it could have really happened. Set in 2015. Lovely first chapter and scene where Harry writes If I Could Fly--i could read that chapter over and over.
19. Into The Blue by zarah5 - https://archiveofourown.org/works/1035822/chapters/2065499
AU. In which Louis is Harry's scuba instructor and quite happy to provide the requested special treatment, pun fully intended. It can't be all that difficult to convince Harry that they're on the same page, right? Also, Niall and Liam may or may not be dating, and Zayn is surrounded by emotionally stunted idiots. He bears it with dignity.
Me: AKA the Scuba fic.
20. Tie Your Heart by ArcadianMaggie - https://archiveofourown.org/works/546688/chapters/973236
Harry grows wings.
Me: How can you not love a fic where Harry grows wings? Trigger warning: injury of a major character.
21. I think I'll end this here. My last and probably first favorite (read it more than once) is...
my heart is breathing for this moment in time by usedtothebeach - https://archiveofourown.org/works/934996/chapters/1820282
When Louis first saw Harry at the 2010 X Factor Auditions, he thought he was watching a peculiarly special stranger. But Harry has known Louis ever since he was five years old.
Because Louis has a rare genetic disorder that causes him to Time Travel to important moments in his past and in his future - and to Harry, always to Harry. When they're put into a band together, it seems like everything Harry has been waiting and wishing for has finally come true. Except for the small fact that Louis doesn't know that Harry is in love with him- that Harry's always been in love with him. Fate, it would seem, is just getting started.
A story about growing up and growing together, and the impossible love that makes it all worthwhile.
Me: I LOVED the Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, and I'm a huge fan of time travel, so this is right up my alley. It's really well done, weaving canon into fantasy and then going years forward in tme. I love everything about it. Great character development. Really good smut. Trigger warning, there's a little underage sex, so be aware. Anyway, LOVE this one so much.
I'll add to this but it's already longer than I meant it to be.

I know Eurovision was like 3 days ago at this point but mĂĽneskin is my current obsession and there were so many good songs this year so hereâs my top 5 plus some honorary mentions because the rest of the songs were either just ok or not great.
Honorary mentions:
Ukraine- hell yeah the pagan ritual vibes were off the charts. I love songs where I have no idea what the fuck theyâre saying and it goes hard so itâs definitely in my top 10
Malta- I did really like Maltaâs song but I think it did worse than predicted purely because of the sheer number of radio friendly pop songs this year. Destiny has such a nice voice though so I hope she makes more music soon
Switzerland- I didnât really care about Switzerland that much but the song really grew on my between semi final 2 and the final.
Ok now for my top 5
5. Denmark- Iâm still bitter that they didnât qualify. Apparently they were 11th in semi final 2 and if it was just up to audience votes they wouldâve qualified so fuck the juries. Their song is just so fun and you can tell theyâre having a great time. Plus I love the vibes even though idk what the hell theyâre saying
4. Lithuania- damn the roop are good I need to check out more of their stuff. Their song last year was one of my favourites and Iâm so glad they were back this year with more iconic dance moves
3. Finland- hell yeah this song is so good. Gives me big linkin park vibes and I love how the band describes themselves as âviolent popâ and I mean theyâre not wrong
2. Italy- our winners! I LOVE their song itâs just amazing. Iâve been obsessed with mĂĽneskin the last few days and literally every song they have is great (even the slower ones- Iâm not usually a huge fan of slower songs). Iâm genuinely so happy they won (sorry Barbara and Gjon you were great but I did not want either of you to win)
1. Iceland- the winners of my heart I love these nerds (affectionate) so much. Iâm so glad DaĂ°i came back this year because his song last year was phenomenal and he managed to do it again this year. I was so sad when they couldnât perform live but honestly considering how amazing the competition was 4th place is a win in my books. I do wish they did better but Iâd accepted that they probably werenât going to win so I was really happy with 4th place. I love DaĂ°iâs music and I canât wait to see him on tour next year! (Was meant to see him in April this year but it was cancelled :( ). DaĂ°i og gagnamagniĂ°, you will always be my winners :)
In conclusion, this years eurovision was so fun, definitely the best one Iâve ever watched, truly an amazing comeback. Well done to everyone and well done Italy and MĂĽneskin, your win was well deserved. Canât wait for next year!

It's 2021, and I'm watching Buffy for the first time.
The Virgil on my Buffy journey is my long-distance girlfriend, who has loved the show for years. We just finished season 4, and I wanted to write about my favorite episodes so far. I suspect some of my faves are beloved by most fans, but others are weird, personal picks. Buffy fandom, please don't come for me.
I thought this post would be short but I was wrong.
Hono(u)rable Mentions: "Band Candy" S3E6 and "Halloween" S2E6
Both these episodes have fun premises where the Scoobies run around Sunnydale after it was upended by zany, chaotic dark forces. "Band Candy" is fun for devil-may-care teen Giles. "Halloween" is fun for 18th-century-ditz Buffy. These are both very good, and are the sorts of episode I can imagine happily rewatching in the future. I just have more to pontificate upon for the other episodes on this list.
10. "Ted" S2E11
I canât say I enjoyed this episode, but it did take me for a wild ride. Probably nobody else has strong feelings about this weird story where Buffy's mom dates a stereotypical cheesy family man, who turns out to be a controlling abuser, who turns out to be a robot. I remember shouting at the screen, "Did Buffy just kill a human man?? Is it okay in the moral logic of this show for Buffy to kill a human if he's a direct physical threat to her??" I knew Buffy would have deeper stories than the monster of the week formula we'd seen so far, but this early in season 2, I had no idea when or how that would happen. This was the episode that finally taught me that Buffy is largely not interested in moral ambiguity, or in exploring what it means to be good or bad. Except for season-defining exceptions like Faith and Angel, evil characters are simplistically, essentially evil. But it was wild to believe for a moment that Buffy murdered her mom's abusive boyfriend and would have to live with the consequences.
9. "Helpless" S3E12
When Buffy tries to be genuinely scary, it succeeds with aplomb. The premise of this episode is dumb and contrived ("Giles has to remove Buffy's powers without her knowledge for a seeeecret test by the Watcher's Council") but the chase and fight in this episode are some of the most tense and spooky scenes of the whole series so far. Buffy's vulnerability makes the stakes feel real in a way few other episodes manage. And Buffy's victory is all the more satisfying because she can't punch her way out of this problem, she has to be smart and creative. The fridge horror, of course, is that Giles would endanger her like this in the first place, but that gets sorted out over the emotional arc of the next few episodes.
8. "I Only Have Eyes For You." S2E19
Another spooky episode, this one a classic ghost story of forbidden love ending in murder - but with the twist that the ghosts possess people's bodies to have them reenact their final moments. I love stories about breaking a doomed-to-repeat cycle. I love weird shit like the snakes manifesting in the cafeteria. And I really loved the choice to have Buffy and Angel come to understand their feelings about their own relationship by embodying these ghosts - especially how they embodied different genders than their own to better fit the "roles" of the haunting story, thus subverting the expected pattern. I found this episode clever, poignant, and effective.
7. "Who Are You?" S4E16
"Faith and Buffy switch bodies" is a wild premise, but the real joy of "Who Are You?" is watching Sarah Michelle Geller being an extremely talented actress for 45 minutes, portraying a totally different character. Watching Faith confronted by kindness and love from Buffy's mom, Riley, and her friends, then getting launched into an existential crisis over it is so great. Also, I just dig a good church fight.
6. "Hush" S4E10
As stated above, love an episode that reminds me that these people are talented actors! Featuring demons that render all of Sunnydale unable to talk, we get to watch great physical comedy right next to tense, silent fight scenes. The visual creepiness of the Gentleman and their straight-jacketed weird little helpers is hard to beat. "Hush" is such a clever episode that it ascends monster of the week status to become almost Twilight Zone-esque. Also, for the first time, Buffy sees Riley doing his Initiative thing, and Riley sees Buffy being the Slayer, but they can't talk about it?? That's good shit.
5. "The Wish" S3E9
Both "Something Blue" and "The Wish" feel like the writers decided to use fanfic premises on their own show... so obviously I like them a lot. But getting to watch a dark timeline AU with interesting world-building and attention to detail, a hilarious and horrifying Cordelia POV, AND a smirking kinky vampire Willow? Hello?? And the fact that the Wishverse comes up again in "Doppelgänger" (another truly fun episode) only improves my opinion. I imagine this is the kind of episode fans simply love coming back to.
4. "Restless" S4E22
This David Lynch-ass dream sequence was a weird choice for a season finale, but an extremely ambitious and cool episode. I should say up front that I love David Lynch-ass dream shit. There were creative and well-executed scene transitions as characters moved seamlessly from one dream room into another. Several memorably neat shots - Willow running between endless curtains as she tries to get onstage, Buffy alone in a vast desert with a weirdly high camera angle. And I got myself all excited thinking that the First Slayer would maybe become a different kind of antagonist - maybe not even fully revealed in this episode, or maybe an Id-like aspect of Buffy herself. But I forgot Whedon gonna Whedon, so the First Slayer had to be someone Buffy could punch in the end. And the First Slayer is sadly yet another primitive-themed, emotionally-stunted character of color for this show. Most of her lines in this episode are literally voiced by a white woman speaking for her, and of all the dumb quips to make, Buffy had a line about her hair being unprofessional? Also, I'm a lesbian, so the fact that the most explicit act of intimacy between Willow and Tara this show has allowed us to see occurs in Xander's horny dream sequence... itâs unforgivable, Joss. This episode was one of my favorites ever, deeply marred by some bad writing choices.
3. "Lovers Walk" S3E8
Spike, perhaps the best non-Willow character in this show, is back in Sunnydale, a hilariously heartbroken mess of a man, hell-bent on getting his former girlfriend Drusilla back. (Drusilla left him for a fungus demon.) So Spike breaks into a magic shop to get ingredients for a love spell, where he runs into Willow, who is getting ingredients for a de-lusting spell, because she is worried she and Xander will be too thirsty to behave appropriately in public with their actual partners, Oz and Cordelia. This is a hilarious moment just to exist. This is all the episode needed to do to satisfy me. But the fact that Spike then kidnaps Willow, and it ends with tragic stakes of everyone's relationships coming apart, not to mention me genuinely thinking Cordelia was dead for a minute there - wow. Chefâs kiss. The episode is balanced shockingly well between Spike being an ominous villain, and being the sort of lovable semi-evil (more gremlin-like) side character he'll become in season 4. What a wild ride.
2. "Graduation Day" S3E21-22
I'm counting this two part season finale as one because it's my list and I'll do what I want. "Graduation Day" feels like a quintessential Buffy episode executed to perfection. It has Buffy reaffirming her position as a moral heroine, sacrificing her own blood to save Angel's life even when she thought she had to kill Faith to save him. It has Buffy and Faith (or Buffy/Faith, as I prefer to think of them) getting to square off in a dramatic, tough fight. It has a lot of Mayor Wilkins, a character I truly adore for some reason. Nothing like a public administrator who plays mini golf in his office, wants you to chew with your mouth closed, and will kill a graduating class of high schoolers to gain immortality. The catharsis of the whole school getting to fight back against evil, instead of just Buffy against the world - a real joy. This episode misses the top spot for two reasons. "A special vampire poison and the only cure is the blood of a Slayer" is too contrived for me to let slide, and also I had to see Cordelia and Wesley kiss.
1. "Becoming" S2E21-22
Buffyâs season finales really do have good stories and satisfying payoff. First off, Buffy starts this episode by punching a cop and fleeing from the law. Later, Spike also punches a cop. A.k.a., Buffy said blue lives don't matter. Second - I haven't gotten a chance to comment on this yet, but all throughout season 2, evil Angel is such a joy to watch. As regular Angel, David Boreanaz makes exactly one face ("I am a kicked, angsty puppy") and bless his heart, it gets so tiresome. As evil Angel, he is so expressive, dynamic and terrifyingly creative in his badness. And I love his weird threesome energy with Spike and Drusilla. But also, it's so hard to watch Buffy suffer as she deals with her evil boyfriend doing evil things. Her ultimate choice in this episode, to kill Angel even as Willow's spell restores his soul, gave me some real big feels! Also, this episode marks the first moment of Willow doing big, plot-shifting magic on her own, solidifying her transformation from computer nerd to witch!Â
Also, shout-out to the many good smaller moments in this episode: Spike making awkward small talk with Buffy's mom, Buffy constantly dunking on Principle Snyder, and Giles being tortured by visions of Miss Calendar (RIP Miss Calendar, I was your biggest fan.)
"Becoming" is an excellent season finale and the kind of Buffy episode I imagine I will want to re-watch in the future just for nostalgia's sake.
#buffy the vampire slayer#guess i will tag this and just engage in pvp if it happens#buffy fandom in 2021 i don't know you but please be nice#this was fun to write#i guess i do like this show!

Mousieâs New and Improved Top 20 Cdramas List
Because why not. These are ordered in terms of being my favorite as opposed to pure quality - if I was trying to be objective, it would probably be rearranged, but I like being petty and subjective.
You will notice that literally every drama on this list is a period drama. Much as I adore period cdramas, contemporary ones rarely work for me. Â
20. Princess Agents (tie)
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll6x8zf2CnQ
Our heroine is a slave in a brutal society who becomes a feared general, fighting for freedom and love of a Yan prince. But her heart might actually lie with a seemingly cold adversary who is madly in love with her (I shipped them so hard!) I was one of five people who loved the infamous cliffhanger ending because it made a brutal kind of sense (You can read the novel if you want a different resolution.)
20. Tribes and Empires (tie)
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyRsPAGUz-Q
This one has a hell of an open ending, but itâs so gorgeous and epic, I donât even care. Set in a fantasy empire, it follows three men - a half-human prince, a cursed son of a general, and an orphaned leader of a barbarian tribe. A feast for the eyes.
19. Ice Fantasy
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C05lhfrWgQg
A visually stunning high fantasy with elves, quests, a shockingly wonderful hero, brotherly love, toughest lady general ever as OTP and basically everything I like.
18. The General and I
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XDR17kwXYM
The lengthy OTP separation brings its place in this list down, but otherwise a gorgeous romance between two enemies - a general and a female strategist, is a total swoon and so intense.Â
17. Three Kingdoms 2010
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3RVpdYDpYA
This one is a magnum opus of 100 episodes, with a tour de force performance by Chen Jian Bin as Cao Cao. Battles, politics, and even though itâs very secondary, one of my favorite love stories in cdramas. This one is if you want to use your brain as well as your heart.
16. Colourful BoneÂ
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4O5yb3VBh4
It probably doesnât deserve to be this high on the list but it hits all my narrative and shippy kinks with a common-sense heroine taking in an abused and mistreated death machine and teaching him to be human. Mmmm.
15. Young WarriorsÂ
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO83qvKaoSM
What do you get when you have seven awesome heroic brothers, a star-studded cast, tragic stories about heroism and love and just amazingness? You get this drama.Â
14. Strange Hero Yi Zi Mei
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFVDAuFOyWE
Band of misfits fight corruption and uncover mysteries. This one is the most underrated drama on my list. Also, Wallace Huo has never been hotter in his life and that is saying something.
13. The Battle of ChangshaÂ
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbgFMaUfpnE
By the same people who wrote Minglan, this follows a family in 1930s China and is a quiet, devastating masterpiece.
12. Prince of Lan Ling
MV (warning - spoilery):Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jUVGP0HETo
Heâs the consummate battle god. She is a mystical shaman. He is fated to be with someone else per prophecy but he doesnât care and chooses her. True love, politics, battles, jealousy, amazingness, tragedy. I love them so.Â
11. Gong/Jade Palace Lock Heart
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVFPVkHaweo
This is Boys over Flowers goes Qing (where Domyojiâs behavior finally makes sense since heâs a literal prince and Rui likes to kill people.) This is such a amazing good fun, about a modern woman time traveling to the time of the fight for the throne between Kangxiâs sons. She thinks she likes the seemingly gentle Four but ends up with hot-blooded, awesome Eight. She herself is tough as all get out and this is pure deliciousness from beginning to end. Yang Mi and Feng Shao Feng had such amazing chemistry, people RPShipped them for years.Â
10. Return of the Condor Heroes 2006
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzXsBqVYp0I
My first cdrama ever, and what a gorgeous one it was. Thatâs what got me into cdramas. The childhood eps are pretty awful but after that, itâs pure shippy perfection with an incredible OTP. If you want to be in a constant romantic swoon, in that story of female master and her male disciple and their forbidden love, this one is for you.
9. Eternal Love/Three Lives Three Worlds Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9-ry-W4Crg
Fated immortal lovers, reincarnations, the whole enchilada. Yang Mi and Mark Chao have insane chemistry that burns up the screen. The first few eps are slow, but it makes up for it afterwards.
8. Legend of Fuyao
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkMX1d0v7t0
A twisty epic romance with a super-powered heroine who is plain awesome and may destroy the world, and a smart, ruthless prince whoâs only soft for her. I love it so much!
7. Legend of Condor Heroes 2008
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2fea109_qM
Plot twists, good guy hero with a mega smart OTP, tragic anti-hero who becomes a villain for a while with an amazing OTP, bromance, fights, everything. I just adore this one.Â
6. Bu Bu Jing Xin/Startling By Each Step
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9B3Rddrqt0
The one that started the time-travel craze (well, that and Gong), about a modern woman who time travels to the time of Emperor Kangxiâs sonsâ fight for the throne, this is a gorgeously filmed tragic love story, with one of the most perfectly brutal endings out there. I adore it.
5. Nirvana in Fire
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4wps7SK9xo
This is a smart story about politics and revenge, where a survivor of a wrongly destroyed family comes to get justice. Seemingly laid back until it explodes. Not much romance but it doesnât even need it.Â
4. Rise of the PhoenixesÂ
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0BUvMKSj4E
Like the dramas to destroy you? Come right in. A story about a disfavored prince and a lost daughter of a previous dynasty, this is smart, gorgeous, and is going to wreck you.
3. Ever Night (s1)
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x99seU5qJuc
I have talked enough about it recently so I wonât say much more, but if you want epic, movie-like quality, characters you will love, amazing battles and cinematography, complicated world-building and an OTP to die for, come right in.
2. The MythÂ
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rfyfKM_Ww0
For the longest time, this was my favorite cdrama, to be replaced only by Minglan. It starts out funny and ends up tearing out your heart. This is the only time in my drama watching experience I cried so hard I threw up. The story is about two accidental time-travelers - a photographer and a cook - who end up in Qin Dynasty China. And from then on itâs about how that cruel, horrifying world takes two perfectly normal men and by wracking their very souls turns one into a hero and the other into a monster. To me, this is Hu Geâs best performance and as you see his protagonist desperately try to hold on to his humanity and his love in a world that is doing its best to destroy it, I dare you not to cry like a baby. His character is my ultimate cdrama crush. Â
1. The Story of Minglan
MV:Â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA7m2QktiUk
Aaaaaand, my n1. cdrama is the amazing, too short at 73 eps, The Story of Minglan. It is very hard to describe the plot of this - a sort of Elizabeth Gaskell meets period China. It follows three interconnected upper-class families, but more specifically, it is about Shen Minglan, a concubine-born daughter of a minister and Gu Tingye, the oldest, legitimate, and hated by his family son of a Marquess. Their narratives run largely parallel for the first half of the story and such is the genius of this drama that I, the ultimate romance junkie, did not mind that. Minglan is a rarity in dramaworld - she is fiercely smart, very collected and emotionally detached. Life in the troubled Shen household taught her to survive and to hide her feelings and talents. Tingye is a big cdrama love. Abused and reviled by his household where he can do no right (the Marquess hated having to marry his merchant mother for money and has displaced that hate on her son), Tingye manages to keep his warm heart but acquires the ability to go his own way. Both of the protagonists are wonderful and smart and magnetic and rootable for separately, but when they get together, the sparks go off the charts and they become my n1 cdrama OTP of all time. A lot of the story is about family battles, womenâs world dilemmas and relationship (of all sorts) interactions. There is also politics and battles, but the true charm of this drama are the mundane details of the world and the fully-fleshed out people who inhabit it. If you watch only one cdrama in your life, make it this one.  Â

This is a series of short, unrelated vignettes/oneshots that was supposed to be posted for Fosterson Week a year or two ago and I finally got around to finishing it. Enjoy!
5 Universes In Which Jane Is Worthy and 1 Where She Isnât
Read on AO3
1.
On the top ten list of bad ideas sheâs ever had, this is so, so, so bad the number one spot doesnât even seem adequate. The guy who thought he was Thor clearly got caught trying to get her stuff back, and so she is  so  screwed unless she goes in herself. God, why did she go along with this again? Heâd claimed heâd fly out once he got what he was looking for (which,  god , again, why had she kind of believed him?)
Her feet crunch quietly against the hard-packed sand leading to the hole in the plastic tarping making up the walls of the facility that Thor had kicked a guy through, and she, without nearly as much hesitation as she should probably feel, hops in.
The place isnât huge, and it doesnât take long for Jane to find the main room.
Thor had helpfully drawn nearly everyone in security away from where her equipment is stowed, next to a⌠hammer in the dirt. Literally, they built this entire site around a hammer? What the  hell , archaeologists never get this much funding and government attention. And what does her equipment have to do with it?
Jane shakes herself. She has a lot more important things to do instead of trying to puzzle out the weird and wild workings of shady government agencies. Things like capitalizing on their inattentiveness and getting her gear back.
She grabs her notebook first, stuffing it into her back pocket, and then trying to figure out how sheâs going to cart out at least two hundred or so pounds of equipment.
âHey!â
Jane nearly leaps out of her skin and turns, seeing a pair of security guards sprinting towards her from one of the halls.
âShit,â she spits, and frantically looks around at her equipment. Lightest and hardest to replace⌠Radio spectrometer retrofitted for wormholes. Yep, that one. She scoops it up in her arms and takes off.
Even running as quickly as she can, the guards are still within armâs length of her before sheâs taken five steps.
Oh, they are not taking her work. Absolutely not. Erik isnât here to hold her back this time.
She reaches an arm out, barely managing to hold onto her spectrometer as she grasps the handle of the hammer. Old or valuable, the thing is still a hammer, she can still swing at them with it.
A crack of thunder. A blinding flash of light. The feeling of grabbing a live-wire running through her body for a handful of terrifying seconds until the euphoria comes.
If she be worthy , she hears.
May she possess the power of Thor.
Oh, Jane thinks.
Oh, Â fuck .
 2.
âNo, I donât know what⌠Thatâs why Iâm coming out here to⌠Look, all the issues with our readings at the site are originating from this one spot, so yeah, Iâm going to go take a look,â Jane says into the phone.
âWho is it?â Darcy whispers. Their truck rumbles along a remote road in Norway leading to the coast, and the interference from their mystery site makes it so they donât get any radio stations, so Darcy is starved for entertainment.
Jane covers the mouthpiece and whispers back, âCaplan. Heâs--â she uncovers the mouthpiece. âNo, thereâs not any danger. You--no⌠No⌠Wait, but that time wasnât actually my fault, soâŚâ
âBeing a dick again?â
Janeâs eyeroll is all the answer required. âLook, weâll be ba-- in--â Jane makes an almost comical crackling noise in the back of her throat. âWha-- interference from the-- thr-- breaking up--bye.â She hangs up without any further discussion.
Darcy contains a laugh. âYouâre gonna pay for that later, you know.â
Jane rolls her eyes again. âWell, itâs my being at his facility thatâs even getting him funding in the first place, so, you know.â She shrugs. âIf he wants to fight me, Iâm the one with more published papers and theories that changed the laws of physics.â
Darcy pumps a fist. âFuck yeah.â
She waves a hand. âHeâll be fine. Heâs pissed we took the Mule without asking.â Where they plan on going, thereâs no vehicle access, so the ATV was their only recourse. âIf he thinks Iâll be satisfied with this one spot fucking up my results over and over again, heâs got another thing coming. Speaking of which,â the device that rests in Janeâs lap begins to ping, âpull over here.â
âWoo, off-road time,â Darcy cheers, and follows Janeâs instructions.
Another hour of driving in the Mule later, they reach the geographic nexus thatâs been screwing with their readings.
Itâs a pretty spot, bright green grass running all the way to the edge of the cliff, where a sheer drop would land them in the ocean. Norwayâs fjords are always breathtaking, and Darcy counts herself lucky yet again that she gets to visit places like this and get paid for it. All in all, a pretty rad job.
âCan you set up--â
âMagnetic perimeter and radiation scanners?â Darcy finishes. âYeah.â
Darcy unloads the equipment from the back of the ATV as Jane approaches the nexus.
It looks like a storm is beginning to swirl overhead, and Darcy eyes it nervously. Without any cover, they are pretty much sitting ducks if any rain starts to fall, god forbid if lightning starts. Where the hell did all these thunderheads come from? This blew in awfully fast.
Jane crouches down and reaches for something on the ground. âDarcy, you should come look at this,â she calls out.Â
Quite suddenly, the hair on the back of Darcyâs neck stands straight up. The sensation is so strong and sudden that it literally causes her to gasp in shock.
âJane--â she starts but she doesnât get the chance to finish.
Faster than the blink of an eye, a massive bolt of lightning tears from the sky, slicing straight down to where Jane kneels.
Darcy barely has time to scream.
She is thrown backwards by the force of the lightning strike, and she thinks she hears a voice whisper before she hits the ground behind her.
If she be worthy.
When she looks up again, she knows she hears it.
A strange woman stands where Jane once was--massive, tall, blonde, with impressive armor and Mjolnir in her fist.
May she possess the power of Thor.
 3.
Fragile isnât a word that could ever have been used to describe Jane Foster, but with her cheekbones hollowed out by weight loss, neck and wrists gone skinny and tendons standing out against her skin in sharp relief, fragile almost seems generous. A plastic band wraps around her wrist, stamped with her name, attending physician, allergies, and a barcode encoded with all her patient information.
She is tired, often, but with Darcyâs help still manages to go through her research and rough out an outline for her next paper she plans to publish.
Jane likes to plan, likes to say things like thereâs a conference next September that this paper will do really well at, and Jane knows that Darcy is trying to hide her heartbreak at these statements. Darcy used to not hide anything from her, used to barely have the capacity, let alone the desire, but itâs strange the effect dying can have.
Her hospital room is outfitted with several whiteboards scribbled over with notes and formulae, the answers Jane constantly seeks waiting to be pried out of the clutches of the equations she can spend hours puzzling over. Itâs a good use of her time, when sheâs not--
Elsewhere.
Jane is careful to hide the hammer. Itâs her secret legacy, her last hurrah, her hidden responsibility and duty--
Mjolnir is many things to her, but burdensome is certainly not one of them.
She swings her legs over the side of her bed, gripping her IV pole to help her stand. She walks over to the window, where the sunlight of the early afternoon has been shrouded over by storm clouds. She slides open her window, the cool wind of the storm washing over her face.
In the distance, she hears the rumble of thunder.
Jane Foster smiles.
 4.
His axe is buried in Thanosâs chest, and thereâs a blinding moment of what feels like sour vengeance--so many have died already, and now the Mad Titan will perish for his crimes.
He presses the blade of Stormbreaker in further, for Loki, for Heimdall, for every one of his slaughtered people.
Then Thanos whispers, âYou shouldâve gone for the head.â
And he feels his heart drop.
And then, and suddenly as Thor himself had dropped from the sky, another streak of lightning blazes in from the east, and Thor can feel it-- Â Mjolnir .
But how?
He canât even tell who is wielding it until the hammer smashes Thanosâs skull in, and the Mad Titan is finally felled. The Infinity Gauntlet drops, the stones unused, the universe saved.
The woman holding Mjolnir is tall, with shining armor that looks well-crafted, including a helmet that hides the upper half of her face. In spite of that, he can see her eyes.
Eyes he would know anywhere in the galaxy.
She looks almost as stunned as he is.
âJane?â
 5.
The cell phone footage is grainy and difficult to make out. Shot by a civilian in Garching, Germany, the shaky video peeks at the action from behind a brick wall. A voice out of frame whispers, Â âDude, I think itâs Thor!â Â and is quickly hushed by the one holding the camera. Â So at least two more witnesses to track down, Â Natasha thinks tiredly.
The observation, though, is rather striking in its accuracy. The figure has a red cape and flowing blonde hair, and displays a command of lightning that Natasha hasnât seen since Thor more-or-less retired after their last showdown with Thanos.
The opponents are a small gaggle of aliens, impossible to fully make out but probably more scavengers whoâd come to pick the bones of Thanosâs last battlefield. In the two years since the Snap, theyâd been getting a steadier stream of extraterrestrial threats looking to take advantage of Earthâs vulnerability.
âHow is it that we have holographic video technology widely available, but every civilian who has useful intel has a Nokia from 2004?â Natasha grumbles, squinting and trying again in vain to enhance the footage.
From her place next to her, Okoye chuckles. âI think weâve demonstrated that we have the worst luck imaginable,â she jokes darkly.
The figure is still hard to make out aside from the gaudy cape and lightning. The electricity in the air made the audio on the video spotty at best, mostly static and a few loud bursts of accurate recordings of a fight, but mostly useless. Then a few video frames give them a clear view of the front of the figure.
âPause,â Natasha says, sitting forward in her chair. âGo back three frames?â The computer obeys her voice command, ticking back to the moment when they had the best view.
Both Okoye and Natasha freeze as they take in the image.
Thereâs a shard of disappointment that goes through Natasha when she realizes, once and for all, that it definitely isnât Thor. That disappointment turns swiftly into suspicion because she does not know this person, and they certainly have powers that wouldâve landed them at the top of a SHIELD watchlist back in the day.
Itâs a woman. Sheâs massive, arms and legs thick with muscle, and extensive armor that could be Asgardian make, but with the graininess of the video, itâs hard to tell. Her helmet covers almost her entire face, only exposing her mouth and jaw. Some sort of chainmail on her legs, perhaps, and a sleeve on her left arm. Her right arm is bare, and clutched in that hand--
âMjolnir,â Natasha breathes.
âI thought it was destroyed,â Okoye says.
Natasha nods. âWe all did.â
Despite the video quality, thereâs no mistaking that hammer. Especially when Natasha resumes the video and the mysterious woman throws the hammer, and it returns to her hand moments later.
âWe havenât seen any new powered people since the Snap,â Okoye says, breaking the silence. âWith our⌠ situation  being what it is,â she continues, tactfully calling the mess theyâd made of the world a  situation , âwe should either ascertain if this woman is on our side, get her on our side, or terminate her as soon as possible.â
Natasha nods in quiet contemplation. They cannot afford to have a powered person running around the world unchecked, not with the way things are. Theyâre barely managing to hold it together as it is, and the Avengers are spread extremely thin. Not to mention their help is often rejected in an official capacity, a lionshare of the blame for what happened falling to the Worldâs Greatest Heroes who failed to save the world. Itâs a PR nightmare, and there are many nights when Natasha wishes that sheâd just been dusted along with the half of the world who didnât make it.
But she didnât. Sheâs still here, and someone needs to lead.
âWant me to track down Thor and ask him about her?â Okoye says. âBased on her strength from that video, sheâs probably Asgardian.â
Natashaâs kneejerk reaction is to say no, that Thor canât handle this, that heâs been in an almost constant state of inebriation and/or depression for the last two years and she wonât expose her friend to something that might be painful for him. Then her rational mind kicks in and she nods at Okoye. Thor is their best lead. âIâll come with you.â (Then her vicious mind raises its hackles and says if sheâs got to wade into the shit that is the post-Snap world, then Thor should have to get right into it with her.)
That night, the evening news features a story with the grainy footage Natasha couldâve sworn sheâd managed to scrub from everywhere (but alas, she is no Vision.) The ticker at the bottom of the screen reads The New Thor: Who is she, and can we trust her?
***
They find him at a hightop table in a hole-in-the-wall bar in New Asgard, and if Natasha had been serving him, she probably wouldâve cut him off at least four drinks ago, but the bartender doesnât seem concerned with denying their monarch his alcoholic solace.
âDo I need to go get Brunnhilde?â Okoye whispers to Natasha.
Thor sways in his barstool, hands clasped around a large stein of beer, but seems coherent enough to answer their questions.
âNot yet.â
âWha--?â Thor mumbles, eyes half-lidded. âWhatâre you saying?â His words are disturbingly slurred. Maybe getting Brunnhilde wouldnât be a bad idea.
Natasha refocuses. âHave you watched the news recently?â
Thor snorts and takes a drink of beer. And doesnât stop taking a drink of beer until the stein is half-empty. Natashaâs eyes widen when he lets out a loud belch.
âApologies,â he says, not sounding apologetic, âbut youâll have to excuse me for not keeping up with current events.â
Okoye cuts in, âHow about this current event?
She slides a set of photos out of a manila envelope, laying them down on the bar table. The paper sticks to the surface of the table.
Thor shakes his head once, as if trying to rein in the spinning the room is likely doing around him. He leans down and squints at the photos. âThat--â He cocks his head. âThat isnât me.â
âNo,â Okoye confirms. âIt isnât.â
âThese photos were taken two days ago in Garching, Germany. Know of any Asgardians who settled there?â
Thor swallows, and doesnât immediately answer. He raises his free hand not on his beer to the photos, and the tip of his middle finger drags over where Mjolnir is inked onto the paper. âI thought it was gone,â he mumbles.
âSo did we,â Natasha says, tempted to reach out to him at the abject sadness in his voice.
Okoye slants a glance at Natasha. Â Focus , she seems to say with her eyes, before redirecting Thor, âAre there any Asgardians in Germany?â
âA few,â he says. âNone that look like this woman.â He looks up at them. âDo you know how she found Mjolnir?â
Itâs his most coherent question yet. Natasha shakes her head. âWe just found out about her. She looks pretty confident with it, so maybe sheâs been training somewhere.â
âI donât underst--â Thor loses his battle with his balance and gravity and falls off his barstool. Natasha and Okoye both reach out to steady him, but he manages to catch himself before he hits the floor.
Natasha goes to Thorâs side, her heart falling quickly as she puts an arm around him. Itâs hard to see Thor like this, especially knowing the kind of man he used to be. (Of all the people she thought would stick with her, after Clint and Steve left, she thought that Thor would be the one to stay. Heâd fought through so much heartache, sided with them in New York against his own brother, protected the Earth from the Dark Elves after his motherâs murder, faced down Thanos even after his planet had been destroyed, and yet heâd always been ready to fight. Itâs downright unnatural, utterly tragic to see him laid so low.)
Turning to Okoye, Natasha says, âGo get Brunnhilde.â Okoye doesnât need to be told twice.
âThor,â Natasha prompts, getting the man to look at her. His eyes look pained. Sheâs sure hers must reflect his. âYouâve gotta stop this.â
âStop what?â he mumbles.
âYou know what.â She hesitates before offering, âYou could come back, you know. Join the Avengers again. I really could use the help, and youâve got more experience leading than everyone else on the team combined.â
Heâs already shaking his head. âNo.â Clear, concise, and completely at odds with his drunkenness. âNo, I canât do that.â
âWhy not?â
His answering smile is sad. âI have nothing left to offer you.â
âYes, you do,â Natasha answers softly, but based on his tone, this isnât an argument sheâs going to win. Not today, at least.
A beat passes. âYou really didnât know about Mjolnir?â she asks, one more time.
âIâm not worthy anymore,â he whispers. âWhy would it call to me?â
Natasha doesnât answer that. Thereâs a lot of layers there that she doesnât think sheâll ever fully understand.
Okoye returns with Brunnhilde at her side. She says to Okoye, âYou know, sometime youâre going to have to visit me when itâs not for the purposes of picking his sorry ass up off the floor.â
Okoye chuckles. âIâll keep that in mind.â
Brunnhilde proceeds to pick Thor up in a bridal carry, making Natasha stumble a bit when his weight is no longer against her. âCome on, your majesty,â she says, tone almost bored. âLetâs get you home.â
Natasha bites her tongue against all the questions she wants to ask.
How often do you do this for him?
How is everyone around here blind to whatâs happening to him?
Where on earth is he getting enough alcohol to regularly get drunk?
Before she can even think of pursuing another line of questioning, she gets a call from Carol--she is needed urgently back at headquarters.
She sighs. The hunt for the new Thor will have to wait for now.
***
Itâs only once Natasha and Okoye are on a quinjet and flying back to their base that Brunnhilde unceremoniously drops Thor on the ground.
He huffs, but quickly stands up and brushes himself off, perfectly sober. âUnnecessary.â
She glares at him. âHow long are you going to keep this act up?â she demands. âThose are your  friends .â
âNatasha is a friend,â Thor corrects, âOkoye thinks Iâm a worthless drunk.â
Brunnhilde rolls her eyes. âBecause sheâs never known you as anything else.â
He grits his teeth. âItâs for the best.â
âThatâs what you keep telling yourself, but they  know  about her. Whatâs your act doing to keep her safe now?â
The muscle in Thorâs jaw works furiously, but he calmly answers, âThey donât know her identity. They think sheâs a rogue Asgardian.â
Brunnhilde bristles and brusquely pulls a folded manila envelope out of her back pocket. âOkoye gave these to me, said to ask you about them again when you sobered up.â She quickly opens the envelope and tears its contents out and holds them right in his face. The edges of the photo paper crease under the force of her fingers clenching down on them. âYou see this? The better she gets, the more this is going to happen. And you know whatâs eventually going to happen?â She jerks her head backwards. âYour friends are going to find her. Sheâs on a crash course, and then she will be a part of this. You canât stop that. It was a fantasy to think you ever could.â
âI didnât think I could keep her from it forever,â Thor replies evenly, and he wraps his fingers around Brunnhildeâs wrist and lowers the photos from his face so he can look her in the eye.
âThen  why ?â she asks.
âBecause she needs to be better than me,â he says, like a release of steam from a pot. âShe needs to be better, and sheâs not yet.â
Brunnhilde shakes her head. âI donât know if youâre going to get a choice for much longer.
  and the one timeâŚ
âJane.â
His shoulder jumps under her head.
âHm?â
âWeâre almost there.â
âOh,â she says groggily, and pushes herself off Thorâs shoulder. âOops,â she says when she notices the spot of drool on his shirt. âSorry.â The weird half-sleep that comes along with car rides is slow to depart, clawing at her eyelids until she reaches to her right, where a bottle of water sits.
After she downs half the bottle and truly wakes up, he gives her a soft smile, one that says he probably wasnât far behind her in terms of falling asleep. âItâs no matter. I thought youâd want to be awake before we arrived.â
She stretches her hands over her head as much as the towncarâs roof allows, and a series of satisfying pops go down her spine. She grunts in satisfaction before saying, âI need to go over my speech one more time.â
âIâm fairly certain  I  could give it at this point with how many times Iâve heard it.â
âYouâre a good person to practice with!â
âIâm only teasing,â he says. âAnd besides, this is hardly your first time doing this.â
âThis still feels bigger, somehow.âÂ
He makes a soft sound of agreement. Jane offers the water to him, which he accepts and drinks his fill before capping it and setting it aside.
Jane continues, âItâs one thing to get, you know, a big science award. Like, the last time I got the Nobel I felt almost old hat at it, you know?â
Thor gives her a look. âI recall you saying that you felt like you were going to throw up before you went onstage to give your speech.â
Jane flaps her hand at him. âOkay, sure I was nervous, but I wasâŚ.used to the shape of it? This is a completely different type of thing.â
âYes, excelling at heroics is something you usually leave to me.â
âHey, I have plenty of behind the scenes heroics!â
âOf course, dear,â he says with a laugh, âbut none of those behind the scenes heroics resulted in a singlehanded defeat of the Infinity Stones, handicapping Thanosâs plan, and saving untold lives.â
Jane tilts her head back onto the headrest, a smile spreading across her face. That day, that last fight that Strange predicted would end in only one way, would be permanently emblazoned in her memory as long as she lived. Thor had asked her to stay away from the battlefield, and initially, sheâd agreed. She and Tony had been theorizing about the nature of the stones, and they hadnât had time to parse out the quantum entanglement theories together before her thinking buddy had to jet off to try and save the universe.
It came to her like a lightning strike only minutes after the team had left for the last battle. Sheâd built a frequency jammer that would disrupt the quantum entanglement of the stones in thirty minutes flat, and then raced out of the Avengers compound like a bat out of hell. Sheâd just have to get within range of the stones, and theyâd be rendered inert, their effects immediately reversed, and theyâd just be ordinary stones, and then they could be destroyed.
And, incredibly, even though the science of it was shaky at best, and sheâd had to improvise on the fly when some of the wiring on the jammer had shorted out, it worked.
The army from the past was gone, snapped back to their original chronological configuration; Natasha and Gamora were spat out of whatever pocket universe theyâd been trapped in; and Tony hadnât had to use his gauntlet, hadnât had to sacrifice himself for the universe as sheâd  known  heâd planned on.
(Dr. Strange had sputtered, shocked, saying that of the fourteen million six hundred and five futures heâd seen, heâd only seen one possible outcome where they won, and it wasnât this.
Jane shrugged, breathless, dirty, bloody, and grinned. âI found number fourteen million six hundred and  six .â)
âAnd all without a single power to her name aside from her intellect,â he finishes.
âI am pretty cool.â
âBoth pretty and cool, much agreed.â
She lets her head fall to the side so she can look at him. His beard is long enough to be braided, and heâd done so this morning, and heâd taken care to braid some of his hair as well before pulling it back with a tie. He looked good. Great. Amazing, even.
She reached out her hand closest to him, trailing a finger along one of the braids in his beard. A streetlight from outside catches on her wedding ring just so.
After the Snap, she and Thor had drifted back together, partially out of shared grief and guilt, but had ultimately rediscovered why theyâd worked together for years before the distance had become too much strain. Theyâd officially tied the knot a few years after Tony and Pepper had. (Steve had been Thorâs best man, and Darcy Janeâs maid of honor. Tony walked Jane down the aisle in Janeâs motherâs absence. Morgan had been their flower girl.)Â
She wonders if any of this wouldâve happened if they hadnât found each other again. If they hadnât rekindled their love for each other in the horrible aftermath of the Snap, would she have been around to help? Would Tony have reached out to her with the time travel issue? Would he have invited her to collaborate on the quantum entanglement of the stones if she hadnât re-integrated herself into the Avengers circle? She likes to think so--they were friends, at least somewhat, before the Snap (but their closeness now was only formed in those last five years of wounded peace.)
âWhat are you thinking about?â Thor asks, and mirrors her position so he can look at her.
âJust that Iâm really glad I married you.â She nudges forward so she can kiss him. âReally, really glad.â
âIâm glad you married me, too,â he answers. âNot many women would have had the fortitude to put up with me for as long as you have.â
She grabs his hand and pulls it over to her lap. âHow many people did Pepper say were going to be here?â
Thor shrugs. âLess than two thousand, but there is the webcast as well.â
â God .â
He squeezes her hand. âGo through your speech once more. Itâll make you feel better.â
âIâd feel better if we could skip past the ceremony and go right to the drinking and partying portion of the evening.â
Thor laughed. âIf only I were planning the evening, Jane Foster. Now start from the top.â
Jane laughs, and closes her eyes. With her husbandâs hand in hers, his warmth a steady reassurance at her side, she recalls the words sheâs memorized and feels her nervousness retreat as she begins to speak.

Ian Mathersâ 2020: Weâre stuck inside our own machines
Iâve had a song I loved in high school and havenât thought much about since stuck in my head. The song âApparitionsâ by the Matthew Good Band is a fine example of the alt rock of the late 90s; if you grew up then but somewhere down in the states (or elsewhere) instead of my southern Ontario you may well have your regional equivalents, and like this one they may not resonate terribly strongly outside of their time and place. It popped back into my head after a long time recently and of course 2020 has changed it a little. A song that as a teen I felt keenly as about loneliness (albeit also about how technology can feed into that) of course now plays on my nerves as another small piece of art about the way that most of us (those scared and/or responsible anyway) have only that relatively narrow, technologically mediated connection to the people we love. All of us, artists and listeners alike, are trying to fit our feelings and art and selves down these little connections, with some success.
On a personal level, 2020 wound up being stressful in ways we couldnât have predicted even after the pandemic hit. In circumstances that could have seen governments on this continent support those unable to work (and those who shouldnât have to), support those workers who are truly essential, support workers and renters and even landlords and small businesses, instead we got a near-total abeyance of those governments using the resources we provide them with to save any of us. On a personal level my wife and I were lucky enough to be able to work from home (not that it didnât come with its own forms of stress, and now that Iâm off until January I have several work/stress-related illnesses to recover from) but still saw friends and loved ones lose good, used-to-be-sustainable livings overnight, saw family businesses succumb to a near-total absence of effective government support after months of trying to keep above water, etc.
It is probably no surprise that this is not a situation conducive to listening to music, let alone writing about it; I have deliberately and happily kept busy on behind the scenes stuff at Dusted that I could still manage but looking, at the end of the year, at the amount I managed to actually create is demoralizing if not at all shocking. Iâm not sure I think next year will be âbetterâ in many important ways, although at our job there is a growing feeling among coworkers that next year has to have some work/life balance because 2020 was, maybe more than anything else, unsustainable.
Thatâs not to say I didnât spend a lot of time and emotion on music this year, and if nothing else constant sleep deprivation, stress, and panic meant I was probably open to being deeply moved by all sorts of art even more than normally (itâs gotten to the point where I canât even read a sad or moving twitter thread out loud to my wife without getting teary, which is kind of⌠nice?). Funnily enough the band that did the most to keep me sane didnât really put out anything in 2020. Personal favorite, Low, instead started, in early April, getting on Instagram with something they called on whim âItâs Friday Iâm in Low.â With one brief break they have now done by my count at least 35 shows (catalogued here, by the way), every Friday at about 4 my time.
Admittedly itâs easier for Low to pull this off than some bands, since the 2/3 of the trio that sing are a married couple (theyâve had a couple of socially-distanced backyard shows with bassist Steve Garrington, but heâs mostly been isolating elsewhere). These shows have seen the bandâs Alan Sparhawk take a mid-set break to do follow-up phone interviews with the acts featured in the COVID-curtailed touring bands series Vansplainingthat they started on YouTube, or just to give a tour round their vegetable garden and talk tips. Itâs seen Alan and Mimi Parker draw on their impressive, 25+ year body of work (averaging 4-5 songs a set, I donât think theyâve repeated themselves yet) and talk a bit between songs about pandemics, politics, song choices, and whether Alan should grab his bike helmet this time.
Theyâre not the only musicians out there speaking love and sanity (and playing music) into the strange digital interzone filled with hate and disinformation where weâve all been forced to gather while locked down, but they were and the most consistent and steady signal being emitted each week. No matter how tired I was from work or what new symptoms Iâd developed or what horrific thing I read into the news, even if I had to take an emergency nap while it was actually airing, every Friday the show was there. Once things do return to something more like normal, itâs one of the few things Iâll unambiguously miss about this weird-ass year.
So if that makes an argument for Low as my band of the year (admittedly again⌠itâs not like Double Negative has aged poorly, either), that does a disservice to those 2020 records I did connect with; even if there are still literally dozens I have to go through, many of which I expect to love, my top picks this year (if as unrankable by me as always) hit me as hard as any top pick in recent years did. So here I present a quick and informal top 5, which the rest of my top 20 following in alphabetical order. Hereâs hoping for more time and space in 2021 for music, and even more than that, for more support for those who need it from those who could have been providing it all this time. (The Matthew Good Band, incidentally, always did best with their ballads. âStrange Daysâ is another Iâve had in my head these days; the image of moving âbackwards, into a wall of fireâ has stuck with me since the 90s and itâs never felt more grimly appropriate.)
Greet Death â New Hell
New Hell by Greet Death
This one is, in some sense, cheating; it came out November 2019. But that just means itâs the latest winner of my personal Torres Prize for Ian Being Late to the Party (so named because becoming slightly obsessed with Torresâ Sprinter just after I sent in my 2015 list was the first time I noticed that one of my favorite records of each year tends to get picked up by me just after I call it quits on the year, no matter how long I try to wait). This very doom and gloom slowcore/metal/(whatever, just know itâs heavy) trio at first felt very much like my beloved Cloakroom (whose Time Well has also won a Torres Prize) but sure enough nuances revealed themselves. Back in February it felt almost a little too negative, but then the rest of 2020 happened. And the extended burns of âYouâre Gonna Hate What Youâve Doneâ and the title track remain searing.
Holy Fuck â Deleter
youtube
Probably the record Iâve been trying to write about the longest in 2020, and the one Iâm most disappointed in myself that I just couldnât get the requisite paragraphs together. Itâs a wonderful effort from the consistently great Toronto resolutely human-created (and âmediated) dance music quartet, one that both feels like a summation of everything they do well, and with the addition of some outside voices (including strong turns from the singers of both Hot Chip and Liars) a step forward at the same time.
Spanish Love Songs â Brave Faces Everyone
Brave Faces Everyone by Spanish Love Songs
As the year got worse, this roar of defiance only got more crucial for me to hear every so often; I was a big enough fan of it, even after writing it up for Dusted, that when they solicited fan footage for a subsequent music video you may just be able to get a glimpse of me in it. (Iâm the one in a âNo Toriesâ t-shirt.) My punk rock-loving twin brother was the one who introduced me to Spanish Love Songs and we were supposed to spend an evening in June screaming along to them live in a packed, sweaty room. I need that in my life again.
Julianna Barwick â Healing Is a Miracle
Healing Is A Miracle by Julianna Barwick
Itâs a sign of what 2020 has been like here that even just this album title leaves bruises, and while I privately worried Barwick would have a hard time following up 2016âs sublime Will (probably my favorite record that year), it seems that continuing to take whatever downtime she needs to keep focusing and refining her particular muse has once again yielded amazing results. Anyone who thinks they know what a Barwick track sounds like should really check out, say, âFlowersâ, but much of this record absolutely sounds like Barwick, just even better than before. She also boasted my wife and I's favorite streaming concert of 2020, an absolutely gorgeous rendition of this album with Mary Lattimore showing up.
Phoebe Bridgers â Punisher
Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers
I joked on Twitter recently that I have far too nice a dad (and far too good a relationship with him) to be as obsessed as I am with Phoebe Bridgersâ âKyotoâ, but here we are. Like most of her generation, Bridgersâ social media presence ranges from shit-posting to inscrutable, but even though things are often just as hard to figure out in her beautiful songs (as they often are in life), thereâs an emotional clarity to them that can just grab you deep down. Couple that with seriously impressive songcraft and the progress from her already astounding debut Stranger in the Alps and more than anyone else in 2020 Iâm excited to see just where the hell Phoebe Bridgers is going to go, because it feels like sheâs talented and hardworking enough to go just about anywhere and drag a lot of our hearts with her.

âHeâs our Satanâ: Mega music manager Irving Azoff, still feared, still fighting
(x)PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. â Â
This is not Irving Azoffâs house. Irving and his wife Shelli own houses all over, from Beverly Hills to Cabo San Lucas, but right now in the last week of October itâs too cold at the ranch in Idaho and too hot at the spread in La Quinta, so heâs renting this place â a modest midcentury six-bedroom that sold for $5 million back in 2016.
From the front door you can see all the way out, to where Arrowhead Point juts like the tail of a comma into the calm afternoon waters of Carmel Bay. More importantly, the house is literally across the street from the Pebble Beach Golf Links, where Azoff likes to play with his college buddy John Baruck, who started out in the music business around the same time Azoff did, in the late â60s, and just retired after managing Journey through 20 years and two or three lead singers, depending how you count.
(Via LA Times)Â
Azoff is 72, and this weekend heâll be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Bruce Springsteenâs longtime manager Jon Landau. Beatles manager Brian Epstein and Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham are already in, but Azoff and Landau are the first living managers thus honored. Azoff is not only alive â heâs still managing. As a partner in Full Stop Management â alongside Jeffrey Azoff, his oldest son and the third of his four children â he steers the careers of clients like the Eagles, Steely Dan, Bon Jovi and comedian Chelsea Handler, and consults when needed on the business of Harry Styles, Lizzo, John Mayer, Roddy Ricch, Anderson .Paak and Maroon 5. Azoff has Zoom calls at 7, 8 and 9 tomorrow morning, and only after that will he squeeze in a round.
The work never stops when you view the job the way Azoff does, as falling somewhere between consigliere and concierge. âMy calls can be everything from âMy knee buckled, I need a doctorâ to âMy kidâs in jail,ââ Azoff says. âI mean, you have no idea. The âMy kidâs in jailâ one was a funny one, because the artist then said to me, âYâknow, Iâve thought about this. Maybe we should leave him there for a while.ââ
Golf entered Azoffâs life the way a lot of things have â via the Eagles, whom Azoff has managed since the early â70s. Specifically, Azoff took up golf in the company of the late Glenn Frey, the jockiest Eagle, the one the other Eagles used to call âSportacus.â By the time the Eagles returned to the road in the â90s theyâd left their debauched â70s lifestyles largely behind, but Azoff and Frey got hooked on the little white ball.
âFrey would insist on booking the tour around where he wanted to play golf,â Azoff says. âWe made Henley crazy. Henley would call me in my room and heâd go, âWhy the fâ are we in a hotel in Hilton Head North Carolina and starting a tour in Charlotte? Is this a fâ golf tour?ââ
Trailed by Larry Solters, the Eaglesâ preternaturally dour minister of information, Azoff makes his way down the hill from the house for dinner at the golf clubâs restaurant. Heâs only 5 feet, 3 inches, a diminutive Sydney Pollack in jeans and a zip-up sweater. In photos from the â70s â when he was considerably less professorial in comportment, a hipster exec with a spring-loaded middle finger â he sports a beard and a helmet of curly hair and mischievous eyes behind his shades, and looks a little like a Muppet who might scream at Kermit over Dr. Teethâs appearance fee.
His father was a pharmacist and his mother was a bookkeeper. He grew up in Danville, Ill., booked his first shows in high school to pay for college, dropped out of college to run a small Midwestern concert-booking empire and manage local acts such as folk singer Dan Fogelberg and heartland rock band REO Speedwagon. Los Angeles soon beckoned. He met the Eagles while working for David Geffen and Elliot Robertsâ management company and followed the band out the door when they left the Geffen fold; they became the cornerstone of his empire. âI got my swagger from Glenn Frey and Don Henley,â he says. âNo doubt about it.â
Azoff never took to pot or coke. The Eagles lived life in the fast lane; he was the designated driver. âArtists,â he once observed, âlike knowing the guy flying the plane is sober.â This didnât stop him from trashing his share of hotel rooms, frequently with guitarist Joe Walsh â whose solo career Azoff shepherded before Walsh joined the Eagles, and who was very much not sober at this time â as an accomplice.
âThis was a different age,â Walsh says of his time as the bandâs premier lodging-deconstructionist. âWe could do anything we wanted, so we did. And Irvingâs role was to keep us out of prison, basically.â He recalls a pleasant evening in Chicago in the company of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, which culminated in Walsh laying waste to a suite at the Astor Towers hotel that turned out to be the ownerâs private apartment. âWe had to check out with a lawyer and a construction foreman,â Walsh remembers. âBut Irving took care of it. Without Irving, Iâd still be in Chicago.â
Azoff became even more infamous for the pit bull brio he brought to business negotiations on behalf of the Eagles and others, including Stevie Nicks and Boz Scaggs. He didnât seem to care if people liked him, and his artists loved him for that. Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker said theyâd hired Azoff because he âimpressed us with his taste for the jugular ⌠and his bizarre spirit.â Jimmy Buffettâs wife grabbed him outside a show at Madison Square Garden, pushed him into the back of a limo and said, You have to manage Jimmy, although Buffett already had a manager at the time.
His outsized reputation as an advocate not just willing but eager to scorch earth on behalf of his clients became an advertisement for his services, a phenomenon that continues to this day. In August 2018, Azoffâs then-client Travis Scott released âAstroworld,â which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and occupied that slot again the following week, causing Nicki Minajâs album âQueenâ to debut at No. 2. On her Beats One show âQueen Radio,â Minaj accused Scott of gaming Billboardâs chart methodology to keep her out of the top slot and singled his manager out by name: âCâsucker of the Day award,â she said, âgoes to Irving Azoff.â Azoff says he reacted as only Azoff would: âI said, âIâm really unhappy about that. I want to be câsucker of the year.ââ In 2019, Minaj hired Azoff as her new manager.
Most of the best things anyoneâs ever said about Azoff are statements a man of less-bizarre spirit would take as an insult. When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted the Eagles in 1998, Don Henley stood onstage and said of Azoff, âHe may be Satan, but heâs our Satan.â
An N95-masked Azoff takes a seat on a patio with a view of hallowed ground â the first hole of the Pebble Beach course, a dogleg-right par 4 with a priceless view of the bay. He cheerfully admits that he and his partners at Full Stop are âobviously, as a management business, kind of losing our assâ this year due to COVID-19. In another reality, the Eagles would have played Wembley Stadium in August before heading off to Australia or the Far East. Styles would have just finished 34 dates in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. As it stands Azoff is hearing encouraging things about treatments and vaccines and new testing machines, and is reasonably confident that technology will soon make it possible for certified-COVID-free fans to again enjoy carefree evenings of live music together; he doesnât expect much to happen in the meantime.
âWhat are you gonna do,â Azoff says, âtake an act that used to sell 15,000 seats and tell them to play to 4,000 in the [same] arena? The vibe would be horrible, and production costs will stay the same.â
He knows of at least six companies trying to monetize new concert-esque experiences â pay-per-view shows from houses and soundstages, drive-in events and so on. But heâs not convinced anybody wants to sit in their parked car to watch a band play. More to the point, heâs not convinced itâs rock ânâ roll.
âFallon and Kimmel, all these virtual performances â people are sick of that,â he says. âYour production values from home arenât that good. And theyâre destroying the mystique. I mean, Justin Bieber jumping around on âSaturday Night Liveâ the other night without a band, and then he had Chance the Rapper come out? It made him look to me, mortal. I didnât feel any magic. So weâve kinda been turning that stuff down to just wait it out.â
In the meantime, he says, Full Stop is picking up new clients during the pandemic. Artists with time on their hands, he believes, âhave taken a hard look at their careersâ so weâve grown. No revenues,â he adds with a chuckle, âbut people are saying, âWe need you, we need to plan our lives.ââ
âIN HIGH SCHOOL,â Jeffrey Azoff says, âI wanted to be a professional golfer, which has obviously eluded me.â He never expected to take up his fatherâs profession. âBut my dad has always loved his job so much. Thereâs no way that doesnât rub off on you.â
The younger Azoff got his first industry job at 21, as a âglorified internâ working for Maroon 5âs then-manager Jordan Feldstein. After a week of filing and fetching coffee, he called his father and complained that he was bored. According to Jeffrey, Irving responded, âListen carefully, because Iâm going to say this one time. You have a phone and you have my last name. If you canât figure it out, youâre not my son.â
âDirect quote,â Jeffrey says. Itâs one of my favorite things heâs ever said to me. And itâs the spirit of the music business, by the way. There are no rules to this. Just figure it out.â
Over dinner I keep asking Irving how he got the temerity, as a kid barely out of college, to plunge into the shark-infested waters of the â70s record industry in Los Angeles. He just shrugs.
âI never felt the music business was that competitive,â he says. âItâs just not that fâing hard. I donât think thereâs that many smart people in our business.â
Itâs been written, I say, that once you landed in California and sized up the competition, you called John Baruck back in Illinois and said â
âWe can take this town,â Azoff says, finishing the sentence. âWhereâd you get that? John told that story to [Apple senior vice president] Eddy Cue on the golf course three days ago. Itâs true. I called John up and said, âOK, get your ass out here. We can take this town.ââ
In the ensuing years, Azoff has occupied nearly every high-level position the music industry has to offer, surfing waves of industry consolidation. Heâs been the president of a major label, MCA; the CEO of Ticketmaster; and executive chairman of Live Nation Entertainment, the behemoth formed from Ticketmasterâs merger with Live Nation. In 2013 he and Cablevision Systems Corp. CEO and New York Knicks owner James Dolan formed a partnership, Azoff MSG Entertainment; Azoff ran the Forum in Inglewood for Dolan after MSG purchased it in 2012.
Earlier this year Dolan sold the Forum for $400 million to former Microsoft CEO and Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, whoâs since announced plans to build a new stadium on a site just one mile away. Despite the apocalyptic parking scenario that looms for the area â two stadiums and a concert arena on a one-mile stretch of South Prairie Boulevard â Azoff is confident that the Forum will live on as a live-music venue. âPeople are going, âTheyâre going to tear it downâ â theyâre not going to tear it down,â Azoff says. âItâs going to be in great hands. I have many of the artists we represent booked in the Forum, waiting for the restart based on COVID.â
The holdings of the Azoff Co. â formed when Dolan sold his interest in Azoff MSG back to Azoff two years ago â include Full Stop, the performance-rights organization Global Music Rights and the Oak View Group, which is developing arenas in Seattle and Belmont, N.Y., and a 15,000-seat venue on the University of Texas campus in Austin. Azoff describes himself as increasingly focused on âdiversification, and building assets for the family that arenât just dependent on commissions, shall we say.â
But as both a manager and a co-founder of a lobbying group, the Music Artists Coalition, heâs also devoting more time and energy to a broad range of artistsâ-rights issues, from health insurance to royalty rates to copyright reversion to this yearâs Assembly Bill 5, which threatened musiciansâ independent-contractor status until it was amended in September. (âThat was us,â Azoff says, somewhat grandly. âI got to the governor, the governor signed it â Newsom was great on it.â) He describes his advocacy for artists â even those he doesnât manage â as a âwar on all fronts,â and estimates there are 21 major issues on which âweâve sort of appointed ourselves as guardians.â
He does not continue to manage artists because he needs the money, he says. (As the singer-songwriter and Azoff client J.D. Souther famously put it, âIrvingâs 15% of everybody turned out to be more than everyoneâs 85% of themselves.â) Everything heâs doing now â building clout through the Azoff Co., even accepting the Hall of Fame honor â is ultimately about positioning himself to better fight these fights. âIâd rather work on [these things] than anything else,â he says. âBut if I didnât have the power base in the management business, I couldnât be effective.â
The recorded music industry, having fully transitioned to a digital-first business, is once again making money hand over fist, he points out, but even less of that money is trickling down to artists. That imbalance long predates Big Techâs involvement in the field, but the failure of music-driven tech companies to properly compensate musicians is clearly the largest burr under Azoffâs saddle.
âThese people, when they start out â whether itâs Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, whatever â they resist paying for music until you go beat the fâ out of them. And then of course, none of them pay fair market value and they get away with it. Your companyâs worth $30 billion and you canât spend 20 grand for a song that becomes a phenomenon on your channel? Even when they pay, artists donât get enough. Writers donât get enough. Music, as a commodity, is more important than itâs ever been, and more unfairly monetized for the creators. And thatâs what creates an opportunity for people like me.â
AZOFFâS FIRM NO longer handles Travis Scott, by the way. âTravis is unmanageable,â Azoff says, nonchalantly and without rancor. âWeâre involved in his touring as an advisor to Live Nation, but heâs calling his own shots these days.â
I ask if, in the age of the viral hit and the bedroom producer, he finds himself running into more artists who assume they donât need a manager. Ehh, Azoff says, like itâs always been that way. âThereâs a lot of headstrong artists,â he says. âI havenât seen one thatâs better off without a manager than with,â he says, and laughs a little Dennis the Menace laugh.
Weâre back at the house. Azoff takes a seat on the living-room couch; Larry Solters sits across from him, his back to the sea. Azoff recalls another big client. Declines to name him. Says he was never happy, even after Azoff and his people got him everything on his wish list. âHe hit me with a couple bad emails. Just really disrespectful sâ. I sent him an email back that said, âLucky for me, you need me more than I need you. Goodbye.ââ
He will confirm having resigned the accounts of noted divas Mariah Carey and Axl Rose. Reports that he once attempted to manage Kanye West have been greatly exaggerated, he says, although theyâve spoken about business. âRobert [Kardashian] was a good friend of mine. The kids all went to school together,â Azoff says. âWhat I always said to Kanye was, youâre unmanageable, but we can give you advice.
âA lot of people could have made a dynasty on the people we used to manage,â Azoff says, âlet alone the ones we kept.â
But he still works with many artists who joined him in the â70s â with Henley, with Steely Danâs Donald Fagen and with Joe Walsh. Walsh has been sober for more than 25 years; it was Azoff, along with Henley and Frey, who talked him into rehab before the Eaglesâ 1994 reunion tour. âIrving never passed judgment on me,â Walsh says. âAnd from that meeting on, he made sure I had what I needed to stay sober.â If he hadnât, Walsh says, thereâs no chance weâd be having this conversation. âAll the guys I ran with are dead. Keith Moonâs dead. John Entwistleâs dead. Everybodyâs dead, and Iâm here. Thatâs profound to me.â
The first client Azoff lost was Minnie Riperton â in 1979, to breast cancer when she was only 31. Then Warren Zevon, to cancer, in 2003. Fogelberg, to cancer, four years later.
âAnd then Glenn,â says Azoff, referring to the Eagles co-founder who died in 2016. âI miss Glenn a lot. And now Eddie.â
Van Halen, that is. I ask Azoff if he can tell me a story that sums up what kind of guy Eddie Van Halen was; he tells me a beautiful one, then says heâd prefer not to see it in print. It makes perfect Azoffian sense â profane trash talk on the record, tenderness on background.
I ask if heâs been moved to contemplate his own mortality, as his boomer-aged clients approach an actuarial event horizon. Of course the answer turns out to involve keeping pace with an Eagle.
âHenley and I are having a race,â he says. âNeither one of us has given in. Neither one of us is going to retire.â
Henley was born in July 1947; Azoff came along that December. Does Don plan to keep going, I ask, until the wheels fall off?
âI donât know,â Azoff says.
Do you ever talk about it?
âYeah! Heâll call me up and heâll go, âI really feel sâ today.â And I say, âWell, you should, Grandpa. Youâre an old man. You ready to throw in the towel? Nope? OK.ââ
Azoff says, âI contend that what keeps us all young is staying in the business. Iâve had more people tell me, âMy father, he quit working, and then his health started failing,â and all that. Every single â I mean, every single rock star I know is basically doing it to try and stay young. And I think it works. I really think it works.
âI have this friend,â Azoff says. âCalls me once a week, heâs sending me tapes, itâs his next big record. Paul Anka! Heâs 80 years old. OK? And my other friend, Frankie Valli âŚâ
âDo you know how old Frankie Valli is?â Solters says. âEighty-six. And he still performs.â
âNot during COVID,â Azoff says. âI told the motherfâ, âYouâre not going out.ââ

Favorite Characters Tag Game
Rules: List your favorite character from 10 Different Fandoms and tag 10 people
Thankees @flamelscrossâ for the tag! (Reading yous was fun, heeeeee!)
Okay, letâs see if I can do this in just 10 fandoms. XD This will be in... no particular order past the first one. XD
1. Captain James T Kirk (Star Trek: The Original Series)
Obviously Jim tops the list, he is my childhood hero, my first ever crush and love, and the first Captain of my heart. I was raised on TOS, learned to read on TOS books (my favorites were the ones centered on Kirk, especially the ones where he got into trouble, my love for hurt/comfort and dude in distress came early XD), and Kirk will never not be my fave.
2. Captain Kathryn Janeway (Star Trek: Voyager)
(Shhhhh, itâs technically a different show, it still counts! I could never choose between them anyway so >.>) Captain and Queen of my heart. Sheâs definitely my first lady crush, even if I didnât realize it till years later, and she was a formative hero of my later childhood and teens. Sheâs an absolutely gorgeous woman, a wonderful HBIC, protective den mother of her crew, and we couldnât have ever asked for a better first lead Star Trek captain. (She also deserved better than what the producers did to her, fuck the producers.)
3. Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
Another formative figure of my teens. From girlhood to womanhood, Buffy protected and saved the world on an almost nightly basis, and she did it with wittiness and style. Sheâs powerful, kind, loving, understanding, protective, and so many other wonderful things. How could I not look up to her and want to be her. She is an absolute Queen of my heart, and I will always love her.
4. Xena (Xena: Warrior Princess)
Are you sensing a theme yet? XD Yet another of my late childhood to teen heroes. Gorgeous woman, Queen of my heart, HBIC, multiple time savior of the world. I fell in love with her almost immediately, wanted to be her, realized decades later that I have always had a crush on her. Sheâs witty, has style, does everything she can to protect the innocent, and let me tell you, she can do a lot. After all, she has many skills.
5. Luke Skywalker (Star Wars)
Hey look, another childhood hero! XD I canât say that I ever crushed on him (not until the new movies, oh fuck did he get gorgeous as he got older), but lord above did I want to be him. From yearning young farm boy to Jedi and savior of the galaxy, he had such an innocence about him, and then he blossomed into a powerful, caring, and heroic man who still saw the good in even the worst of enemies.
6. Captain Jack Harkness (Doctor Who/Torchwood)
Moving on to later years, Captain Jack Harkness is my captain. Despite his start as a conman, he became a man who would do anything to protect and guard the people he loved (and I mean anything, he is the man who makes the hard choices, the man who does what the purest of heroes canât, because someone needs to in order to protect the galaxy) and the galaxy in general. He sacrificed his very life to do so, and through the good intentions of someone he loved and who loved him in return, he was repaid with an unending existence that became an absolute hell. He loves easily and he loves hard, and he sees not gender or race or species or anything other decisive differences when he loves.
7. Ash Williams (The Evil Dead trilogy)
Blame this one on first Xena (cause Autolycus, yes pls, and Bruce Campbell) and then @lenny-kosnowskiâ for introducing me to The Evil Dead trilogy. XD From traumatized survivor to reluctant and sarcastic hero, there was no way I wasnât going to love him once I knew him. (Also, Army of Darkness is campy as hell, and I fucking love it, omg)
8. Tsukino Usagi (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon and all its incarnations)
I love Usagi in all her incarnations, from manga to original anime to live action (which became my favorite) to Sera Myu, (I still need to watch Crystal >.<) Usagi is perfect. Ditzy, clumsy, sweet, outgoing, cheerful and at first reluctant hero, she becomes the most tenderhearted hero the universe has ever known. She always sees the good in people, always does whatâs right, and she always saves the world. Also, my ditzy, clumsy, outgoing young self definitely identified with her. XD
9. Clark Kent/Superman (DC, Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman)
If you think I didnât fall in love with this absolute cutie at first sight, then youâve got another think coming. XD Clark Kent/Superman has always been my favorite superhero, and my young self being introduced to Dean Cainâs Superman? I never stood a chance. XD I adored him growing up, Lois & Clark is such a wonderfully campy and light-hearted and crazy take on Superman, and Dean Cainâs Clark was perfect. He always managed to save the day, always managed to do the right thing, and always managed to remain Clark despite being Superman.
10. Ariel (Disneyâs The Little Mermaid)
As a young girl in a family that constantly had loud screaming fights with each other (although they always ended quickly and then we were all fine), I identified with Ariel so hard. I love my father and always have, but he and I clashed so hard growing up, probably because weâre so much alike. It was not unusual for us to out and out scream and shout at each other, so much anger in both of us, and explosive anger that quickly faded (looking back, weâre both ADHD and both experience emotions intensely so uh, yeah). I still remember the time he took all of my music books/sheet music/actual school work (for choir and marching band) and literally threw it out into the street because he refused to accept that I wanted to have a career in music, shouted that it wasnât realistic, I should just settle for something else: I ran crying, out into my very dangerous neighborhood, that night, refusing to come back home to him. So the scene with Triton absolutely destroying Arielâs grotto and then storming out, leaving Ariel sobbing and yearning for more... I knew the feeling, very intimately, and seeing someone like me go through it, and then come out happy and with everything sheâd always wanted? I wanted that, and I wanted to be just like her.
Okay, there are. So many more characters, but. ONLY TEN. XD So done. Iâmma tag @lenny-kosnowskiâ @lurkingfoxxyâ @enfysalinaâ @aphnxrisingâ @hobbitystmarymorstanâ @costofthecrownâ (with absolutely no pressure!) and anyone else who wants to do it! This was a lot of fun (although omg I spent so much time picking gifs XD) and I love it.

The Five Worst Things About Digimon World
I did it.
It took 20 years but I did it.
I finally beat Digimon World for the Playstation 1, a game that has haunted me for most of my lifetime, and I did it with a Phoenixmon, the reason why I use âTurquoisephoenixâ as a handle!
This is who I used to beat the game, named after an obscure Ratchet and Clank character because thatâs just how I roll. The final boss battle involved a lot of Prominence Beam spamming and med recovery floppy spamming but I did it fair and square.Â
Before I get into what I thought about this game as a whole - and I do have a lot of good things to say about this game since I obviously enjoyed it enough to get to the end - I gotta talk about my least favorite things about this game. In a concise, Buzzfeed-esque list because I like writing things in easy to digest chunks.
Because, like most charming yet difficult games of the late 90â˛s, this game is very flawed and the flaws are pretty annoying!
1. Care Mistakes
The three emojis - Smile, Cool, and Poop.
Okay. This one - my least favorite part in the game - is going to take a bit of explanation.
First off, I donât actually hate care mistakes existing as a mechanic. I think itâs a cute, virtual pet-y way to add a different wrinkle to evolution requirements, even if I think itâs a bit counter-intuitive to have to suddenly abuse my little companion once they reach Champion just because I want them to evolve into a floating metallic ball with a chainsaw.
My problem with care mistakes is that thereâs literally no way of telling many care mistakes you have on your given Digimon.Â
Literally everything else in this game is concisely recorded and easily displayed on your Digimonâs stats screen. You can see how much your Digimon weighs. You can see their Happiness, their Discipline. How much Life they have left. Their Age. Even how many poops they need to make before they digivolve into a sentient pile of feces.
But Care Mistakes? Naaaaw, you just gotta remember every single thing that you did to your Digimon from the moment it evolves in your fallible human brain. Whatâs that? A good portion of this game involves grinding in the Green Gym and itâs really easy to make a Care Mistake there without knowing you did so because you mashed A too fast like the stat-grinding numskull that you are? Well, thatâs just too fucking bad for you, then! Enjoy not getting some of the best evolutions, you piece of shit. You stooge. You moron!
This game, multiple times: You know who I hate? The player.
Care Mistakes are such an invisible mechanic that, to this day, there are many guides with misleading info about what counts as a Care Mistake and what doesnât, which...really stinks for a game such as this where you will be using a guide pretty extensively to get the Digimon you deserve. And you know why that is? Because we donât get any indication as to whether or not some random event counts against you when raising your Digimon.
And honestly, having one of your main mechanics of the game being entirely invisible to the player is a terrible idea. Just put a little number in my profile that says âCare Mistakes: 0âł in there. Let me know this information without guessing.
2. The Glitches
Pictured: Something that will CRASH YOUR GAME if you try it on a physical copy.
Let me start with a disclaimer that most of the glitches Iâm going to complain about were added into the game when Digimon World was localized and therefore arenât the original intent of the developers. There are certain versions of Digimon World that are more stable than others (The English PAL version is the best version to play because of this) and, if you play this game via âcertain methodsâ, there are patches to circumvent some of the bigger problems.
That being said! Boy! Isnât it ironic that a game where Iâm exploring the digital world is plagued with so many annoying, game-ruining glitches? Especially if Iâm playing this game on a physical 20-year old copy like a dunce?
âOhhhh...so Agumon thinks that they can block the Digimon game with their big fat Digimon-blocking head, do they?!â
The NTSC version of this game has a jukebox that will crash the game if you try to use it, keeping you from ever using a bonus feature meant to be a fun little reward for completing a certain dungeon, but thatâs not as heinous as the Spanish, French, German, and Italian PAL versions of this game locking a good portion of the game to players because they forgot to make the Agumon in front of Ogremonâs Fortress an object you can interact with.
So that means, if you happened to get this game in one of four lucky countries, you canât complete the Ogremon mission, you canât recruit Whamon, you canât recruit Shellmon, you canât recruit anything tied to Shellmonâs bulletin board (which means no Vademon or Skullgreymon), and you canât go to Factorial Town and recruit Giromon, Andromon, or Numemon. Ogremon is a key part of the Digimon World storyline and causes so many different things in the game to change, meaning that it shouldâve been imperative to make sure this part of the game works!
But no. Instead this one little bastard Agumon keeps most players from finishing the game, because it starves players of those PAL regions of a bunch of Prosperity points, the main source of progression in this game. That means that Mt. Infinity and the final boss is just that much harder to unlock. Itâs doable, but itâs more grueling process.
This really is a problem with the translators and really highlights a lack of general care with testing this game. Why this game was allowed to be shipped with such glaring bugs is anyoneâs guess, especially in an era where you couldnât release any patches over the Internet to fix retail versions.
3. The Monochromonâs Shop Minigame
Ohhhh....this one was so close to getting the top spot. When I first wrote this draft, this was the top spot.
Monochromon was only spared of my true ire on account of the fact that it really only exists for one part of the game (rather than being a constant problem like the Care Mistakes and the Glitches are) and you can easily cheese it by sleeping in front of the store so that you can save scum your way to victory. Like a true Digital Champion!
At one point in the game, you gotta help a entrepreneur dinosaur rhino man make a profit, because he was stupid and put his convenience store in the middle of a giant canyon next to a gaping chasm. So you play a little game of haggling, where you try to ruthlessly oversell a bunch of random items to customers until you make enough of a profit that this talking dinosaur tells you that you passed his secret test of character, abandons his store, and moves into File City.
Thereâs just one problem with this minigame - everything is decided by RNG.
âGet the hell out of my shopâ
This minigame hates you. It wants nothing but to see you fail and to waste your time. The difference in profit margins of the three items (Meat sells for 50g, Portable Potties sell for 300g, and Medicine sells for 1000g) are so stark that, if you get too many customers asking for Meat, you might as well just reset the game and start over because it will be literally impossible to meet the requirement even if you busted the customerâs proverbial balls and squeezed every last bit out of their cutesy penguin faces.
Oh! Itâs also RNG as to whether or not your customers will take your asking price or storm out of the store without buying anything!
Itâs all the fun of working at retail! In a video game!
4. Three on One Battles
What you see before you is a battle system that is really fun when itâs one vs. one, manageable at two vs. one, and downright unbearable at three vs. one.
The battle system works for the most part. You donât have full control of your Digimon (and yes, you only have one Digimon with you at one time, so you can never stack the numbers in your favor) so you shout commands at it, commands that the Digimonâs AI are pretty good at following, and hope for the best as you chuck healing items at it.
Itâs not the best battle system, but itâs fun. And it definitely reinforces the whole âthis is a pet youâre taking care of with its own thoughts and feelingsâ atmosphere that this game is going for.
However, nothing can protect your Digimon from enemy fire concentrated on them, especially if you did the thing that most players do and equipped your Digimon with the most powerful attacks that also happen to have slower cast times than the faster, weaker attacks.
What then happens is your Digimonâs Health is slowly whittled away as you are powerless to stop it, watching as your digital friend is straight up bullied by enemy Digimon as they keep falling to the ground over and over and over and over again.
The one saving grace is that Friendly Fire exists in this game so that oftentimes the enemy Digimon will damage each other in their mad dash to ruin your day, but that seems more like a band-aid than an actual fix to this system.
5. Fishing Seadramon
âHi, kid. Let me guess - you also thought you had to talk to the Tankmon in Factorial Town in order to unlock me, huh.â
This one is a lot less of a pain than the other four and itâs only a little annoying but boy...getting Seadramon kinda sucks in this game.
It took me almost a goddamn hour to catch Seadramon. One hour of gameplay devoted to catching one fish. Just like real fishing!
I will say, besides Seadramon, the fishing minigame in this game is pretty competent. Itâs just that Seadramon is very elusive, showing up at only two hours in a 24 hour day, and is a very finicky fish that wonât take your bait even if you literally placed it in front of his dumb fish face.
Donât be fooled by this screenshot. The heart just means you have the right bait. The heart means that you didnât actually get within range of hooking him.
ITâS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!!!
Seadramon is also subject to almost as many gaming myths as the Care Mistakes are, due to how elusive he is, but thatâs less to do with poor communication (the game does at least explain multiple times in multiple places how to find him) and more to do with the fact that catching him is just such a goddamn chore to do that players of this game always assume theyâre doing something wrong.
When in reality, Seadramon is just a picky little bitch.
Next time I discuss Digimon World, Iâll talk about things I liked, donât worry. I just had to get all of this negativity out before discussing the full game proper.
