#how I paint

Hello! I absolutely love the way you color your digital pieces. I was curious about the colored highlights you sometimes add to your art. They always seem to just fit with the other colors, especially in the hair. How do you choose what color to add so it doesn't look so out of place?

Oh, hi! thank you so much. Well about the highlights on the hair let me show you quickly how i decide what color to put in it!

So there is a lot of stuff happening here but lets center our attention in the highlights of the hair

As you can see Yao yaos hair is very light, so instead of analogous colors i choose to go for a triad, in this way the highlight wont lose itlself in the painting. First observe the yellow color that is a bit lighter than the base color, if you see this in the painting you would observe that this color occupies more space in the highlight, then it follows the greenish one( I used to add a "contrast" in the edges of the hglight) then at last, the blue one that represents a minor percentage of color in the whole hair part( blue tones are my personal favorite to add a variety in my paintings!)

Lets go with a different example now, the darker tone of Nari s hair. Now his hair is very special he has some green strands that changes everything.

In this case i take the green parts as a piece of the triad, in this way all the colors in the hair can communicate, and even if the two colors, green and pink are very different, this works! bc they are part of the harmony. Finally as you can see, the blue tone i choose this time for the highlight of the lineart forms an analogous harmony with the base color.

There is a lot of harmonies to try! so go ahead and have fun with them!

So right now maybe you are thinking, do I have to think all of this when I just want to paint? And I tell you yes but really no, if I can give you and advice if you are as lazy as me, is to observe nature, nature is the real king in color theory!! Also you dont have to pick up pink for your next Nari illustration, this is just all my personal preferences and you can try as many variations as you want!! There is a lot of stuff in color theory and well my recommendation for you is to not torment yourself in every drawing you make with this rules, first have fun and practice and have this maybe as a side note in your mind( Maybe if I can try this it would look even better! Just to make a point, every time I finished a panel of this I would export it as a PNG on the perceptual setting and use it as a color reference for the next panel

PLEASE CHECK YOUR COLOR SETTINGS

EDIT: If you're still having problems, it might help to switch from "Save/Save as" to "Export (as a) Single Layer". Just. Make SURE the box labeled "Expression Color" is set to RGB. I've been messing with this all day, and it looks like this combination of settings will allow exported PNGs to maintain their colors perfectly. To you. So far both Discord and Toyhouse still only display desaturated images and I cannot for the life of me figure out why
