I live on an island where USA military is all we are. Nearly every man in my family is/was related to the military. My grandfather is a war veteran. Yet none of them can vote if we stay here (Guam). Cost of living is high and is getting higher, most highschools have to do half days because of poor conditions, and our language and culture is dying. These problems don't exist if you live on base. Andersen base is known for their low priced goods, Naval hospital's lobby rivals our hotels, and the military kids get their own private schools just for them (complete with opportunities not open to the rest of the island last I checked.)
Yet we're told we are supposed to be grateful that the U.S is here. People had the audacity to say the military families, the people who could afford nice houses on and off base, should get supplies first before the locals during SUPERTYPHOON Mawar. And for a while, this made sense to me. Of course we should be grateful. It could be worse. We could be under the rule of Japan, after all they were the ones who put us into concentration camps. During WW2. Things were so bad that CHamorus back then used to sing for America to come back. They saved us out of the goodness of their heart.
So then you can imagine how frustrated I am at this narrative as I watched our """saviors""" bomb another indigenous population who are put into concentration camps. You can imagine my conflicting emotions when I see posts about gay veterans/military members. I don't understand why anyone, let alone a queer, would be proud to serve this country. A country that wouldn't lift a finger to fight for our queer rights. A country that would leave our people to rot in torture camps if it weren't for the fact our land is close to Asia. I don't understand at all.

I found a more complete version of this picture in my phone!

The scene in this picture — A typhoon hits Guam where Yasmina and Sammy are vacationing with Darius and Brooklynn. Yasmina and Darius are trapped in a flooded hotel room and drowning as Sammy and Brooklynn try to free them from outside the room.
I lost the original copy when my landlord threw away all my stuff. But I was deleting old pictures in my phone and found this. 💔

Bradley gets off the ship and misses Jake. (2.1k, explicit, ao3)
The first thing Bradley did when he heard they would be pulling into port in Japan in a few hours was step out on the flight deck to take a huge breath of the fresh air. The sun was warm on his face and Bradley could feel the life coming back to his body. He hadn’t flown since the day before they made a pit stop in Guam and he was feeling antsy. The weather was nasty nearly the whole trip and the seas were rough but it wasn’t anything he wasn’t used to. This wasn’t his first trip across the Pacific. The Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group would only be in the western Pacific for a couple months, but it felt like a lifetime whenever he was away from home.
Now that they were close to civilization again, Bradley turned his cell service back on. Most of his family knew not to text him to blow up his phone once it was back on, but he had a couple messages from both Ice and Mav, just updates on how the new TOPGUN class was going mostly. In addition to those, there were a few from Phoenix and Javy, as well as a whole long string of messages from Jake. He scrolled through those from Ice, Mav, Phoenix, and Javy, but he decided to save Jake’s for his hotel room. Instead he opted to send Jake a selfie with the Tokyo skyline in the background. Immediately, Bradley’s phone buzzed with a message from Jake that simply read FUCK and Bradley smiled to himself. Exactly the reaction he was expecting.
“Yo! Rooster, let’s go!” Fanboy yelled from the door to the living quarters area. Bradley turned on his heel and bid the Tokyo skyline farewell for the moment. They would have to go gather their flight gear and collection of uniforms to be able to stay in their hotel for a few days. Getting to leave the ship and staying in an off base hotel for a few days was one of his favorite perks of being a fighter pilot. He had put his time in as an enlisted kid, staying in barracks on land and in the junior enlisted quarters while on the ship, so he was going to take advantage of all the comfy beds he could.
It was always a thrash to get off the ship, but going from the aircrew quarters to the rental cars was definitely his least favorite part of a deployment. Carrying his bags and his helmet bag along the narrow staircases was a pain in the ass. It would make him think about his first deployment with Jake and how they would arm wrestle the night before they stopped in port for who had to carry personal bags and who had to carry helmet bags. The last time they did it, it ended in a little more than just arm wrestling. Bradley sighed at the memory and couldn’t get to his rental car fast enough.
Bradley, Fanboy, and the other pilots reached their set of cars and tossed keys around until someone finally had enough and got in the driver's seat. Bradley took his place in the backseat of a van among some bags and backpacks while Fanboy, Omaha, and Harvard chatted mindlessly in the front of the vehicle. He pulled out his phone to reply to Jake’s latest text and felt a heat creeping up his cheeks. The time zone difference was going to be a bitch, but if Jake was going to send Bradley messages like that, he could make it work.
Jake was already asleep by the time Bradly finally collapsed in his bed. Now that he was finally laying down, he could feel just how tired his body was from the time spent on the carrier. The first night back on land always made him restless, especially when he never really had to change his sleep schedule. Being on the ship meant he could just go with the flow and be awake or asleep to meet crew rest so they could do take off and landing certifications. Since becoming TOPGUN instructors after their near-death mission, Bradley and Jake didn’t have to go underway as often as when they were with active squadrons, but every once in a while they would have to travel overseas to help out some of the other squadrons not stationed state-side. He enjoyed the work, getting to pass on all his knowledge to so many pilots. He also got to meet a lot of cool people in the Navy, Marines, and even the Air Force, despite them not flying any of the same fighter jets.
Bradley pulled out his laptop to check some emails before deciding to finally scroll through all of Jake’s messages. They were mostly about how much Jake missed him, a few about how annoying some of the current TOPGUN class pilots were being, but a select few were some suggestive messages that let Bradley know he made the right decision in waiting to get to his hotel room to open them.
“I can’t believe I have to get myself off for a whole month while you’re underway.”
“God, I miss your mouth so much. And other things.”
“Fucking myself open on my fingers and pretending it’s you.”
“But it’s nowhere near close to the real thing.”
Bradley kept scrolling through all the messages, telling himself to go to the messages from other people and reply to let them know he was in Tokyo, but he couldn’t get himself to look away from Jake’s texts.
Ever since the two had become serious, more than just quick hookups in the showers after a sortie or drunk makeout sessions in the bar bathroom, they were inseparable. Jake’s lease was up on his apartment, so he had moved in with Bradley and they were going on six months with no issues. They worked together, often teaching the same lessons together, throwing in ample “so-to-speaks” that made the class laugh but made Bradley hot under the collar. Sometimes even just the sound of Jake’s voice over the radios while in the cockpit was enough to get Bradley half hard. Not only was their relationship incredibly physical, Bradley also was at the point where he found himself unable to stop thinking about Jake in the most domestic of ways. Smiling to himself when he saw Jake making eggs in the morning, his heart tightening when he thought about how this was his life now. How much he loved it and how much he loved Jake. They hadn’t said it to each other yet, unspoken understanding being enough for now, but Bradley knew when he got home from this deployment he wouldn’t be able to keep himself from blurting it out.
As he kept scrolling back and forth between all of Jake’s messages, Bradley palmed his half hard erection through his boxers. He glanced at the time on his phone and sighed. If he didn’t shower now it would get to be late and he had to be up early, and he could finish what he’d started while he was in there.
He threw his phone down and rolled himself off the bed, still getting his legs underneath him. Bradley turned the water on and stripped quickly, standing naked in front of the mirror while the water warmed up. He had never thought much about how he looked until Jake. Jake would constantly tell him he was perfect, that he was the hottest person he’d ever seen, and how he couldn’t believe Bradley was his. Bradley would just tell Jake the same, and it was true. Jake was incredibly beautiful and Bradley could never understand how he pulled Jake. As he stared at himself in the mirror, Bradley ran his hands over his chest and stomach, wishing they were Jake’s strong, capable hands. He gave his dick a small tug before finally stepping into the shower.
The water was warm and relaxed his muscles. He let it run over his head and wet his hair but his hands still roamed over his own body. He started something back out on the bed and he wasn’t about to let a pesky thing like washing his hair get in the way of that quite yet. Bradley turned around to let the spray hit his back for a moment while he finally got his hand on his nearly fully hard cock. He let out a soft groan and worked his hand slowly up and down. Because he was facing away from the shower head, his hand was a little dry but he enjoyed the roughness for the moment. It was how Jake would do it, anyway.
Finally, Bradley turned back toward the spray and sped his hand up. He imagined Jake under him on his knees, eyes looking up at him full of hope and the need to please Bradley. Bradley’s other hand wandered back to his chest and started to play with one of his nipples. He let out a long, quiet moan, still with it enough to remember he was in a hotel and probably had neighbors. With the water mixed with precome that was now coating his hand, the slide got easier and he increased his speed.
“Fuck,” he gasped out between quick breaths. Even though it was only in his head, it was like he could feel the heat of Jake’s mouth around him, the slick glide of his tongue along the underside of his cock, right along the vein that ran there. “Oh, God, Jake, please,” Bradey breathed out.
His hand that was not on his cock was grabbing handfuls of his chest, massaging the muscle and digging his nails in. It was easy to imagine Jake reaching up from his spot on the floor while he kept one hand working Bradley’s cock. He had done it more than once before, it was one of Bradley’s favorite things.
Bradley thought about reaching his free hand back around to open himself up, but as his hand worked, his breaths continued to get quicker and the rest of his body caught up with the fatigue of the trip overseas. He felt himself tipping closer to the edge and started to feel fuzzy around the edges.
Quiet, quick breaths turned to soft, gasping moans of pleasure and Bradley worked his hand quickly over his cock, stripping it like it was his last lifeline. Bradley’s thoughts were of Jake as he painted the floor of the shower. His orgasm hit him hard, two weeks on the ship when all he could think about was his incredibly hot boyfriend but not being able to do anything about it was torture.
Once his bearings returned to him, Bradley finished up his shower by washing his body and splashing water on his face. His breathing had slowed back to a normal tempo and his hands stopped their wandering around his body, finally letting his cock come to rest heavily between his legs, still softening. It didn’t take him long to finish his shower but he didn’t want to leave the warmth of the shower.
After reluctantly shutting off the water, Bradley stepped out into the steamy bathroom and wrapped a towel around himself. He gave a quick thought to the fact that Jake would be waking up soon and the messages he could send when they were awake at the same time. His dick twitched slightly but he elected to ignore it for the time being. The scratch of the towel on his skin made for a welcome distraction from how horny he still was and he finished getting ready for bed.
Bradley was settled in bed, the TV glowing and giving him some soft background noise. It was turned to some late night Japanese sports analysis show, but he wasn’t paying attention. He finally decided to scroll through the rest of his messages from Ice and Mav. There wasn’t anything super important for him to respond to right away, but he shot off a text to the both of them to let him know they made it to Tokyo. It was nearing six in the morning at home, so the replies of “Thanks for letting us know” came through quickly. After texting Nat to let her know the same, Bradley finally opened up his messages with Jake again. He concocted a message to let him know just how his shower had gone, and he waited eagerly for Jake to wake up while he scrolled mindlessly through social media.
About 45 minutes later, Bradley’s phone buzzed where it sat on the bed next to him and he smiled when he saw the message was from Jake. Instead of texting him back, he hit the call button and put the phone to his ear.
“Good morning, baby,” Bradley said when Jake answered the phone in a sleepy voice. “How did you sleep?”
“Mmm, it was fine,” Jake replied. “But by the sounds of your voice, and the texts you sent me, my morning is about to get a lot better.”

Writing Workshop Week 3: Stories of a Place
3 facts of public information:
Puntan Dos Amåntes, or Two Lovers' Point, overlooks Tumon Bay in the north of Guam.
The legend varies depending on who tells it, but they all agree that two lovers who were unable to be together tied their hair together and leapt to their deaths on this point.
There is a bell that matches other points around Japan that share the same story.
3 facts of private information:
The weather could not have been more perfect that day.
I was there with my father and brother.
Far below the cliffs swam a pod of dolphins. It was my first time seeing them.
We visited Puntan Dos Amåntes on one of the first days we were on Guam. From the moment I stepped off the plane I felt like I was home in the most bone-deep and sincere way possible a child of my tender years could endure. The smell of the jungle mixed with ocean, the impossible blue of the waters, and the soft sway of the palms conspired to draw tears from my eyes every time we left the hotel room. I couldn't explain it then and I can barely explain it now; it was like the island was asking me where I had been all this time.
Two Lovers' Point was the capstone of a beautiful park above Tumon Bay. Though it is the most popular spot for tourists on Guam, I don't remember any crowds or really anyone other than my father and brother being there. I remember a statue and a viewing area that looked different than it does today. I remember looking out at where the ocean met the sky. I remember my father telling me to look down, that there were dolphins below us.
I had never seen dolphins outside a zoo before. These ones were so far below us that it was hard to see them in the shadow of the cliff, but then they started jumping. These creatures, jumping for what I can only imagine as joy, seemed to be putting on a show for themselves, for how could they see us so far above?

Maria Makino, will release her 9th solo photobook "Dear MARIA" on June 10th.
Tumblr media
This is the first time in three years that an entire photobook was shot overseas and Maria returned to Guam for the second time since the release of her photobook "17sai" six years ago.
The theme of her photobook is 'Girlfriend'. The book captures Maria in various settings such as the azure sea and white sandy beaches, resort hotel pools, cafes, and night amusement parks. It features her waking up in bed, spending time in her room, showing her natural expressions up close, and surprising facial expressions.
Maria shared her excitement about the photobook, saying that she was thrilled to do the overseas shoot, even though she was also a little nervous. She also says that her best memory of this shoot was the WBC.
She was shooting on the day of the final game, so her mother in Japan sent me updates, and the staff and her were thrilled and excited. She found out about the victory while standing on the beach and she was also inspired by the efforts of Samurai Japan and did her best during the shoot.

Wedding Night
Lee Taeyong X Kang Seulgi
Tumblr media Tumblr media
requested (content, not story)
warning: mature content
tags: @gerardeveryway @gomseulgiii @innssanityyy @seulyongggi
Seulgi's gaze remained down on her hands throughout the plane trip, her thumb playing with the beautiful diamond ring on her left ring finger, a new piece of jewellery on her. Her eyes drifted to looking out the window at the sky, a smile on her face despite the slight nervousness she felt.
Despite the a year of dating, then another 6 months of being engaged, Seulgi had never engaged in any intimate activities with her now husband. As much as she did fall for him, being paired up by their parents and sent to start dating right away wasn't something she could get over, especially when it came to intimacy, and she was just incredibly happy Taeyong was understanding of it, a trait that she ended up loving in him as well.
"Hey." she turned to him as he called her, a smile on his face. "What do you wanna eat?" he motioned towards the flight attendant, who repeated her usual line of the menu items.
She was so deep in thought she almost forgot they were on a flight to Guam, right after their wedding, heading for their honeymoon. And once she picked her meal choice and started to eat, the last one spun around her mind.
Honeymoon night.
It stuck to her even as they checked into her hotel, walking into their honey suite, and while Taeyong took in the interior while she stood near the bedroom area. She snapped out of her thoughts and giggled as her husband jumped onto bed, laying out like a starfish tired from travelling right after their reception.
He suddenly turned to her with a smile, his arm reaching out. "Come here." She stared a few seconds at him, biting her bottom lip before noticing his visible pout, which ultimately broke her as she decided to just lie down with him.
Taeyong felt fulfilled as she laid her head on his shoulder, his arm curled up to play with her hair as they slowly got comfortable. She had turned her whole self to him and had an arm thrown over his torso, making him even happier. He peeked at her and noticed her eyes closed, and figured they should take a nap before anything else.
A slight worry filled him, the same as her, although neither knew about the mutual concern.
>
After quick showers, dressing in comfy clothes, then dinner before they retrieved to their suite again, the couple sat in the TV room watching whatever they had selected. Throughout the night Taeyong kept his wife close to himself, always pulling her to his side, arm around her waist or shoulder, stealing innocent kisses every now and then.
Now as he laid down on the L-shape couch, he pulled her to lay her head on his lap, fingers brushing through her hair in the comforting silence. The movie progressed, when a romantic scene popped up, and Seulgi went stiff. She watched the couple on screen get comfortable with each other as they kissed, and felt a slight tingle in her body as her eyes drifted up towards her husband.
His eyes were fixed on the screen, as if watching in the most concentration. She took this short chance to stare at him, studying his facial features, then her eyes trailed down his jaw and neck, until the collar of his night shirt that was left unbuttoned until his chest.
She suddenly sat up and turned to face him, to which he looked confused at her. She gave a shy smile before moving closer, one hand brushing back some hair strands off of his forehead, eyeing his expression in the meantime. She saw the way he stared at her, and knew he could tell the meaning behind her eyes. She moved even closer, faces only inches apart, hand cupping his cheek, and placed a soft kiss over his lips.
Taeyong's eyes followed her lips as she pulled away, not leaving even as he spoke. "Sure?" he was responded with a simple nod, and immediately sat up in a haste. He turned the TV off, then grabbed the back if her neck in one hand, the other now around her waist, and pulled her onto his lap as their lips met again in a passionate kiss.
Just as it deepened, Seulgi gasped when suddenly feeling the cold of his hand on the skin of her back, his arm now hidden under her night shirt. Though as her arms locked around him, hand tugging locks of his hair, the cold was soon replaced as her body felt hot inside and out. Unable to help herself, she unconsciously moved her hips, to which he groaned and pulled her out of the kiss, noses still touching.
"Stop here Seulgi, before it goes any further." Taeyong spoke through shallow breaths.
Biting her bottom lip, Seulgi shook her head before repeating the action once more. "I don't want to." this time she pulled him back in to kiss again, smiling through it when he suddenly stood up, hands now on her thighs as he carried her around the suite. She felt her back hit a wall, probably somewhere in the lounge room, as Taeyong pushed himself on her, and she gasped being able to feel every part of his body this way.
He pulled away, but continued kissing down her jaw and neck. With her head thrown back against the wall, she winced feeling his teeth in the crook of her neck, hand in his hair tightening its grasp causing him to groan again. Suddenly she realised something else, as she noticed the restraint of her bra loosen under her shirt, and felt his hand flat against her skin. Through everything she had failed to notice when he crept back under her shirt and somehow manage to undo her undergarment, his face coming back up to hers with a playful smirk.
"How-" she was cut off when he kissed her again, and carried her off the wall until the bedroom. Gently, he got on the bed on his knees, and bent as he laid her down against the soft sheets. He pulled out of the kiss again, a soft look in his eyes this time as he scanned her face. Confused, she cupped his cheeks in both hands, to which he smiled before grabbing one and kissing her palm, something that made her feel warm and fuzzy inside.
"Why did you stop?" she asked softly, her other hand now playing with his open buttons, further confused when he suddenly bent down and kissed her cheek, then his lips hovered above hers as their noses touched again.
"It's our first, I want to make sure you're OK." he whispered.
As if she could feel any more in love with him, Seulgi felt like her feelings for him only grew more every passing day, or even second. As she processed her words, she realised it wouldn't just be their first, but hers as well.
Her lips thinned as she thought about it before speaking up. "It's... my first time ever." feeling embarrassed she turned her head aside, only to hear a chuckle and another kiss on her cheek.
"Mine too, baby." he whispered in her ear. She turned back to him immediately, eyes widened in shock. "Did you think I was experienced?" he laughed softly.
"I mean... I thought you'd dated before me?"
Taeyong couldn't help laugh even more, shaking his head before he continued leaving kisses all over her face, talking in between each one. "We're in bed together now... and my wife's thinking about my previous dates... How funny... but no... those were only dates... I never liked them enough... to go further..." he moved up again, facing her with curious eyes. "How about you?"
She bit her lip, shy to answer. "Dated once in high-school, but after that... I didn't care enough to find anyone until you came along."
They shared a short laugh, Taeyong bending down to kiss her again, their lips moulding together almost perfectly Seulgi felt. She allowed her hands to move down his shirt, unbuttoning the remaining, and snake into it as her hands reached his back. He pulled away and sat up, chuckling at her pout, before taking the shirt off in one swift motion. Her eyes scanned his body up and down, before she too sat up and pulled her shirt over her body.
"We're even." she commented as her hands reached for him, getting a laugh out of him as he once again laid on top of her, this time allowing himself to drop his weight completely, their bare bodies pressed against each other as they kissed, and both their hands travelled over each others bodies.
It wasn't long before they were completely bare, Taeyong having pulled the blanket over them to keep warm, his face now buried into her chest as he kissed his way down her body. Seulgi gasped at every touch of his hands and mouth, until he reached just below her tummy, moving back up her body until they faced each other again.
She stared at him, a little breathless, when he took her hands and placed them around his torso as if to grab his back. "Are you OK?" he suddenly asked in a whisper, to which she nodded. He moved his face closer before asking again. "Ready?" she nodded again, and he kisses her deeply, as if covering up her moans while entering her body. They pulled away and laid still for a while, both simply taking deep breaths getting used to the new feeling.
Despite the slight pain, something else bubbled up in Seulgi. Her eyes slowly opened staring up at her husband, who watched her with such loving stares throughout, and as he moved she suddenly felt like there was nothing and no one else in this world but them. She moaned high pitched at each push she felt inside, her nails digging into his skin and head thrown back.
Unable to help it, Taeyong dipped his head and captured her lips in another kiss, swallowing all her noise as his hands held her to keep still. "My wife..." he spoke into their kiss. "Mine." he suddenly got up, grabbed her legs and wrapped them around his waist, before hovering back down over her again. This move made her feel even more of him, and Seulgi gasped before he dipped into her neck this time, leaving harsh kisses which she knew she'd have to cover with makeup the next day.
"Tae... yong..." he knew she was close and pulled away from her skin, lips hovering over hers with a smirk as he felt her legs tightening around him.
"I know baby." he gave a quick kiss. "You're mine, my wife."
She found it hard to speak as he sped up, gasping at every feeling, until she felt her body suddenly go limp, eyes rolling to the back of her head. It was as if she lost all her sense, the only thing in her ability to feel was her husband finishing off right after her, then dropping his full weight onto her body after pushing her legs off of his waist. She could hear his deep breaths next to her head, then a kiss on the shell of her ear before his weight had been lifted off.
She didn't know how long it was she laid in bed almost senseless, until she felt the bed dip next to her and fingers pushing away her hair sticking to her face. "Baby..." a soft voice called out to her, right next to her ear, then a kiss on the temple of her forehead. "Come back to me." a hand cupped her cheek and pushed her face towards his own, followed by a soft giggle.
Taeyong didn't push her any more, and simply wiggled his arms under her between her body and the bed, then carried her up bridal style heading to the bathroom. Her head rested on his shoulder, and he kissed her forehead again, smiling when she wrapped his arms around his neck and snuggled into him.
Without putting her down, he stepped into the jacuzzi tub in the bathroom which he had prepared, and sat with her back towards him on his lap, hands now massaging her thighs under the water. "You good?" he asked, pressing his nose into her hair.
"Mhm..." Seulgi responded tired. She grabbed his hands and held them around herself, pushing into his embrace more as she got comfortable. She loved this, even though it was their first time, she felt calm and protected, happy and peaceful. And before she knew it, three words left her mouth, which she had no regrets of.
"I love you."
She felt his chest vibrate with laughter. "After that, I'd be concerned if you didn't considering we just got married too." She looked up at him, brows furrowed and pouting, to which he chuckled more and kissed her pout, arms tightening around her. "I love you, my wife."

Re: your tags about biscuits and gravy - just cos I really don't understand the hype for them (sorry)
I've tried it (in Alaska, we had biscuits, gravy and like some sausage burgers for breakfast cos we had a stopover there before we landed in Guam) and it was still gross 😅 the biscuits tasted sweet like cake and the gravy like mushroom soup... (Picture below taken at like 5am in anchorage, Alaska at some hotel we stayed in)
Tumblr media
We ate out every night in various restaurants (it was a business trip) and everything was sweet??? Even the pizza base and alllll of the bread. (And the portions were enough for 2 whole meals) Nothing was particularly tasty, I don't think there was one thing i was compelled to think "omg this is amazing"
I'd much rather eat beans on toast (which isn't meant to be like mega flavoursome, it's just a staple and it's cheap)
This was a bit more ranty than I intended 😬😂
LOLOL oh dear... well i’ve never been to Alaska, but if you get someone from the South to make you red eye gravy or a good creamy sausage gravy, it’s divine. I personally only use enough sugar in pizza crust to make the bread rise (one teaspoon of sugar for two 14″ pizzas... gotta feed the yeast...), but I have had “sweet” tasting pizza and bread and just... no thanks. A lot of cheap bread is way too sweet for me. So I’m with you there. Proper sausage gravy is more salty and sausage-y than sweet. But it sounds like you had a less than ideal experience, and for that i am sorry.

What It Really Means To Be A Loser: The Pacific Cup Guam
By: Jasmine Lai Naea
I had no idea what I was getting into… I had no clue. The most common response I got when I told people I was going to race the Pacific Cup in Guam was “Where is Guam?” or “Oh, it’s an island so it should be all on the beach, right?” Well, to my surprise Guam offers an intense variety of elevation gain, weather, steep fast rolling hills, and a terrain that I can’t describe in detail, only that, you just had to be there.
I was offered the opportunity to represent Samoa, my father’s birth country, at the very first UCI Oceania Cycling Confederation’s Pacific Cup in early October 2022. A race made up of 65 miles or 105km with about 4k of climbing around the island of Guam. With only two months to prepare I made it official with a plane ticket and solid plans to race on December 11th. Within a short amount of time to prepare mentally and physically,  I studied the course, and I searched social media platforms for previous times and recordings. I tried to track recent times and compared those to my mock-up times. I worked side by side with the Samoa Cycling Federation's President Seti Afoa.  He offered support over zoom meetings and proper funding, ultimately assisting with my travel and accommodation. To cover the remaining costs of my trip I was able to work with my family and friends to fundraise through apparel I had designed myself and promoted on my website. I received a lot of support and love from my community, and my colleagues to make this trip possible. I worked with coaching staff Bernie Port to build a race course profile and the most efficient way to approach the race around the island. We spoke about nutrition, positions to maintain, and our overall goal to give the best effort while finishing with the rubber side down and a smile. My teammate Daniel Afoa was by my side in Guam assisting with representation, meals, and transportation. Daniel helped recon the course and helped me understand the geography of the island. We worked together to ensure a safe successful trip.
I arrived in Guam on Wednesday, December 7th, giving me just a few days to assemble my bike from international travel and acclimate to the beautiful humidity of the island. My spirit was high and I was excited about the main event on Sunday. I enjoyed the wonderful beaches of Tumon Bay, also the friendly staff and people at The Pacific Island Club, the hotel that hosted my stay. I was able to get fast service for my bike at a local bike shop called BikeFixGuam. A familiar atmosphere for me where Derek and his wife Monessa Horton helped me feel very welcome and comfortable by letting me use their service stand and tools. I was blessed with the accessibility of their shop, which made me feel safe and confident that my bike was ready to ride for the race.
In preparation for the big day, coaches and competitors met to go over the official rules with the UCI. The key points of this meeting included areas to be aware of, support vehicle rules, and the other races happening alongside the Pacific Cup. Tour of Guam and their National Championships would be happening as well, meaning there would be about 200+ riders on the course. The Pacific Cup would get a 5-minute head start on the Tour of Guam. Results would show the Elite group and then the riders participating in the tour. For some, this caused some confusion, but for me, it offered a good mixture of riders. This also helped with direction on the remote sides of the island where there were no volunteers or aid stations. Since men and women were starting together, there was no rule against drafting the men or the other riders of The Tour. This is sometimes a rule that is very strict in the case that other categorized races start at the same time. If there has to be an overlapped start on the same course of a race, some categories would be required to neutralize. But in this case, it was everyone for themselves, and later this fact alone made my experience just a little more enjoyable.
With just one day to go, at packet pick up I received a goodie bag with Tour of Guam merchandise, a shirt, and a bottle. Also my jersey number, helmet number, and a seat post decal number with a tracking magnet to capture the precise time I crossed the finish line. I always feel excited when receiving jersey numbers and registration packets. I honor those moments when you accept your number and realize, there's no turning back now. I also had this sensation when I purchased a non-refundable plane ticket and traveled 20 hours. But, at this point, it became real, because I was here and I felt blessed and grateful to have the chance to represent Samoa and help push cycling and bike racing forward in the pacific islands.
On the morning of the race, I woke up two hours earlier than I had wanted. I got up and stretched, hydrated, and connected with some family. I had been monitoring the weather since I arrived and realized it rained every! Day! So when there were dark clouds and thick drops around the hotel balcony I reminded myself “this is what I thought.” In racing, there is no way to escape the weather. It just is, what it is. The cool thing about Guam and the Pacific Islands is, that anyone would feel the relief from the rain, for the fact that it offers coverage from the heavy sun rays that in some cases are inescapable. With a start time of 5:30 am, I was out of my hotel at 4:45 am with a 2.5-mile ride to the start line on a wet road and refreshing thick air. I got a nice warm-up to the start but my socks were drenched. I accepted my fate. It would rain on and off the entire race. If it wasn’t raining on you, it was raining up on the mountain you were descending, and the water was flowing down the hill with you.
The race started and I tried to keep track of the women in the first group. I counted 3, and then there was me. I fought to climb with the first group for the first hour and lost them about 7 miles in. I was alone for the first loop of the first section of the course. While on the island crossing road, I heard a sweet voice come around my left side, “Hey, want to draft?” I sat up and caught the gals wheel and she turned around with a plan, “rotate every 20 (pedal) strokes?” I yelled back in slight pain but relief “uhh.. y-yeah !” We worked together for about 20 miles and 2 hours, for a good half of the race through the southern part of the island. We saw two aid stations together and we would root each other through. I would yell “Let’s go girl!” and she would cheer under her breath “go Samoa.” While making our way back north to cross the island for the last time, a few more people passed us and we grabbed their wheel. After about 15 minutes and approaching the last big climb I lost her. I saw her look back and that was the last time we would see each other until the finish.
I was hurting, and I was hungry. I was frustrated, soaking wet, and sweating. I couldn’t cry, because my legs had taken over my body. I didn’t have a thought in my mind except “I will not stop.” I was beside myself yelling vulgar things and pressing to get past this dark part. Ultimately I let go of closing gaps, the finish time I was fighting for, and told myself “let’s just get to the finish line.” So the pressure was off, and my body was still in pieces. I was dreaming of spam musubi and mac n cheese. I wanted an entire thanksgiving dinner after it all. I dreamt up food while I sucked down an energy gel and hydration mix, it helped but I could feel my body chopping through the 200 calories quickly and fatigue was the butcher knife.
Through the final climb, two gentlemen passed on my left with friendly cheer. “Whoooo! It’s almost finished, you’re almost there!” I asked them if they were from Guam. They said YES! And I told them they must do this ride a lot. “Yes, and it’s tough.” they said. They asked where I was from, and I told them I was representing Samoa in the Pacific Cup. “OHH, welcome to Guam..” they said very warmly.
Finishing at one minute over 4 hours I found a place to lie on the floor away from the crowd. I felt so happy to have finished. I was overwhelmed by the road I had just ridden, with all those kind people. The beauty of the island I zoomed through started to replay in my mind. I broke down into tears. I couldn’t stop crying, maybe because I was holding all these emotions in for the last 30 miles. I just felt so grateful for the good vibes the whole way through. Every person that passed me or looked back was so kind. Every volunteer or bystander that shouted a “CCHHEEHOO” fired me up. Those moments I was alone with just the road,  the sounds of the ocean, and the air of the island were incredible. As I was crying to my mom on the phone the woman that had worked with me through the biggest section of that race approached me. Giving love and thanks, I finally learned her name. Robyn from the Northern Mariana Islands finished 3rd in the Pacific Cup.
Throughout the rest of the day, I had haunting thoughts of where I thought I had given up. I remembered vividly where I let Robyn’s wheel go. The “ifs” and the “I could have” gave me grief. Then I remembered what it really means to be a loser. Losing is a negative term for learning. It means at the moment you encountered parts that you were not prepared for. It also means that you were someone completely different than who you are after that race or experience. After I  returned home from Guam I listened to a podcast that featured one of my favorite cyclists,  Paige Kostanecki. On Coffee and Van chats with Out Of Collective, she gives insight into how she approaches the start line. “Each time you line up for a race is special, it is a unique opportunity to show what you are capable of. The pressure of that opportunity will not break you, it will make you great. Feelings of anxiety is a good thing, it's your body’s reaction to being on the precipice of something exceptional. It will keep you alive, sharp, and hungry.” She goes on to say how she prepares to win, and how it takes a ferocious appetite and commitment to the winning results. She mentions that sometimes we can “future trip” meaning we overstress what may happen in 5 years, 5 months or 5 minutes before the current moment. In the end, she gave a solid reminder that “All we have is this moment”
At that moment, I was on my dream bike on a beautiful island. I was racing for the country of Samoa, pushing bike racing for the Pacific Nations. At that moment I did my best, and at that moment I achieved a finishing time of 1 minute over 4 hours and secured 5th place overall for Samoa. At that moment I had finished the hardest race of my career. Living in the moment is all we have, give your best and love every part, sometimes you win, and sometimes you learn.

This is the first time I've ever posted my art online, and it might be the only time.
In my SAU's fifth story, Yasmina and Sammy go on a double honeymoon with Darius and Brooklynn on Guam, which gets hit by a typhoon. In this picture, Yasmina is drowning in a flooded hotel room with Darius, who is out of frame and unconscious, and Yasmina punches a hole through the wall and briefly touches Sammy.
Tumblr media
I never finished the pic because I couldn't get Sammy's head right, and because multiple people who helped me write that story don't talk to me anymore. The two people I had help from abandoned me, leaving me traumatized and alone.
I lost the hard copy of this picture when my ex-landlord threw out all my stuff.
If anybody wants to finish it they can. I'll give up ownership of it as long as you do right by Yasmina and Sammy.

IN MEMORY OF EMMETT ALULI, SHUT DOWN RED HILL
Tumblr media
Counterpunch.org - December 15, 2022 - By Seiji Yamada
In November 2021, 20,000 gallons of jet fuel spewed from the U.S. Navy’s Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility into the drinking water well serving 93,000 mostly military personnel and their dependents on Oʻahu. Initially claiming that all the fuel had been recovered, the Navy defied the State of Hawaiʻi’s order to stop utilizing the facility for months. Hundreds of families were sickened, and those served by the Navy well had to live in hotels.
The Red Hill Facility consists of 20 underground tanks constructed in the 1940s, each of the 20 tanks holds 12.5 million gallons of fuel. Over a hundred million gallons of fuel remains in the tanks, located only 100 feet above the aquifer that supplies all of urban Honolulu. Having previously claimed before that the system was sound, the Navy now says that it could take one or two years to repair the pipelines in order to drain the tanks safely.
Most recently, on November 29, 2022, 1,300 gallons of fire-fighting aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) containing perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were spilled at the Red Hill Facility. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, PFAS are known carcinogens and can cause decreased fertility, developmental delays in children, hormonal dysfunction, obesity, and immunosuppression. The strength of the carbon-fluorine bond in PFAS resist breakdown, even by incineration. They are “forever chemicals,” persistent in water and biologically concentrated in foods such as fish.
They are toxic in concentrations measured in parts per quadrillion (a million billion). One teaspoon can destroy the water supply of a city. In Hawaiʻi only the U.S. military utilizes AFFF containing PFAS. Civilian firefighters in Hawaiʻi do not use it.
The revelation of the most recent spill prompted community organizations, including Oʻahu Water Protectors, the Hawaiʻi People’s Fund, the Hawaiʻi Youth Climate Coalition, Queen’s Court, and the Sierra Club of Hawai‘i, to organize a “Walk for Wai”  (wai = water) rally and march on December 10, 2022. What follows are my remarks at the rally.
Remarks for Walk for Wai
Today I am speaking on behalf of the Hawaii Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines or HiCHRP. I would like to reflect on the passing just last month of Dr. “Kauka” Noa Emmett Auwae Aluli. Dr. Aluli taught us that the health of the people depends on the health of the ‘āina. Dr. Aluli found it intolerable that the U.S. Navy used the island of Kahoʻolawe for target practice, making it unsuitable for human habitation, and finally cracking its water table. In 1976, as one of the Kahoʻolawe Nine, he risked arrest, his medical career, and his life by occupying and re-claiming Kahoʻolawe. It took another 14 years before the U.S. Navy finally stopped bombing Kahoʻolawe, but the bold action of the Kahoʻolawe Nine was the beginning of the struggle.
Even today, we see how the U.S. military utterly disregards the health of the people and the health of the ‘āina by their occupation of Red Hill. Global domination by the U.S. military is the overarching goal. If the land is poisoned or the people are poisoned along the way, so what? Sacrifices have to be made, and Hawaiʻi is a sacrifice zone. The role that the U.S. military assigns to Hawaiʻi is to be the command and control center for the coming war with China. As Kyle Kajihiro teaches us, Oʻahu is the head of the heʻe or the octopus. Therefore the placement of the Indo-Pacific Command in Hawaiʻi. Therefore the RIMPAC Naval Exercises, in the waters around Hawaiʻi. Since World War II, the Red Hill tanks have been used to store fuel for military ships and aircraft across the Pacific.
In order to contain China, the U.S. military seeks allies in nations surrounding China. Among them is the Philippines – which together with Taiwan, South Korea, Okinawa, Japan, and Guam – will play a crucial role as a staging area from where the U.S. will launch offensives. In November, Kamala Harris was in the Philippines to strengthen ties between the U.S. and Philippine militaries and between the U.S. and Philippine governments. Her visit gives legitimacy to Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., the son of the dictator who imposed martial law on the Philippines in 1972 and who oversaw the use of US bases in Clark and Subic Bay as staging areas during the Vietnam War.
In the Philippines, the Marcos government continues to red-tag activists, and perpetrate extra-judicial killings. Today, on international Human Rights Day, we must recognize that the human rights situation has not improved since Marcos took over from Duterte. This, too, is the price that the people pay for global domination by the U.S. military.
Dr. Emmett Aluli said, “We commit for generations, not just for careers. We set things up now so that they’ll be carried on.” It is up to us to carry on the commitment that Dr. Aluli showed by occupying Kahoʻolawe. We must not stop until we get the U.S. military out of the Philippines and out of the ‘āina.
Water is a human right!
Health is a human right!
